Abstract:In this research, a method for online monitoring of the preheating train of a heat exchanger in a crude oil distillation unit driven by neural networks is presented. The models presented were developed using continuously measured process data, including laboratory measurements of the physical properties of the crude oil during the period under study. The purpose of the developed models was to accurately predict the outlet temperatures of the clean heat exchanger, which is a basis for calculating the fouling resistance as well as the decrease in efficiency of the heat exchanger. Neural network models for shell-and-tube heat exchangers and a moving window neural network were developed to capture the behavior of complex dynamic processes influenced by time-dependent input variables. The models presented were found to be effective in accurately predicting outlet temperatures with a high correlation of approximately 97% on training and test sets, with the mean squared error of approximately 0.002 and 0.003. Gradual deviation between the model's prediction and the actual outlet temperatures indicated the onset of heat loss. The results showed a slowly increasing trend in fouling resistance and a decrease in effectiveness of approximately 20% over the observed period for the fouled heat exchanger.
