Abstract:Considering that the stand-off detection of ethanol gas is significant for monitoring ethanol-free occasions, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a 1.7 mu m/1.5 mu m near-infrared spectroscopy system. Then based on the generated laser signals and the system, the ethanol gas and ethanol solution was stand-off detected and researched. Firstly, we measured the absorption characteristics of ethanol solution in the near-infrared band for wavelength selection. Secondly, the Tm-doped fiber laser in the system was achieved based on a ring cavity and a customized FBG; its output laser wavelength was 1728.45 nm. The linewidth of the 1.7 mu m band signal was about 0.18 nm and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) was about 57 dB. Thirdly, ethanol gas and ethanol solution were stand-offs detected using the established 1.7 mu m/1.5 mu m near-infrared spectroscopy system. The concentration of ethanol solution was measured by 1.7 mu m band laser, and the R-Square of the linear fit was 0.98. However, the concentration of ethanol gas in a turbulence state cannot be easily measured due to scintillation. Therefore, we detected the ethanol gas a turbulence state using a 1.7 mu m/1.5 mu m dual-band system, R-Square of the linear fit was 0.83 when the power jitter variance was 2.35. the experimental results offer a technical reference for stand-off detection of ethanol gas.
Atmospheric-Window-Matching Hierarchical Broadband Infrared Absorber Realized by Lithography-Free Fabrication

Abstract:An ultra-broadband selective absorber has been realized with a hierarchical structure through integrating vacuum impedance matched structure, quarter wavelength structure and gradient refractive index structure. Through optimizing the design parameters of the proposed hierarchical structure, an ultra-broadband infrared absorber covering three major atmospheric windows (0.7~2.5 μm, 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm) has been numerically and experimentally demonstrated. An overall absorption up to 80% covering all the three major atmospheric infrared windows and a ratio of the total absorptions within and beyond the windows as high as 5.88, has been achieved with the developed absorber. The high absorption and spectral selectivity of the absorber make it promising for sensitive broadband infrared spectroscopy detection. The proposed hierarchical structure also provides great design freedom with many tunable factors, making it convenient to extend the design for other applications. In addition, we developed a cost-effective lithography-free method for the fabrication of this structure. The design flexibility and fabrication convenience of this hierarchical structure render it suitable for the development of tailored selective broadband absorbers for targeted applications.
[Open-path online monitoring of ambient atmospheric CO2 based on laser absorption spectrum]

Abstract:With the conjunction of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology (TDLAS) and the open long optical path technology, the system designing scheme of CO2 on-line monitoring based on near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was discussed in detail, and the instrument for large-range measurement was set up. By choosing the infrared absorption line of CO2 at 1.57 microm whose line strength is strong and suitable for measurement, the ambient atmospheric CO2 was measured continuously with a 30 s temporal resolution at an suburb site in the autumn of 2007. The diurnal atmospheric variations of CO2 and continuous monitoring results were presented. The results show that the variation in CO2 concentration has an obvious diurnal periodicity in suburb where the air is free of interference and contamination. The general characteristic of diurnal variation is that the concentration is low in the daytime and high at night, so it matches the photosynthesis trend. The instrument can detect gas concentration online with high resolution, high sensitivity, high precision, short response time and many other advantages, the monitoring requires no gas sampling, the calibration is easy, and the detection limit is about 4.2 x 10(-7). It has been proved that the system and measurement project are feasible, so it is an effective method for gas flux continuous online monitoring of large range in ecosystem based on TDLAS technology.

Abstract:This paper used near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for the on-line quantitative monitoring of water precipitation during Danhong injection. For these NIR measurements, two fiber optic probes designed to transmit NIR radiation through a 2 mm flow cell were used to collect spectra in real-time. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was developed as the preferred chemometrics quantitative analysis of the critical intermediate qualities: the danshensu (DSS, (R)-3, 4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid), protocatechuic aldehyde (PA), rosmarinic acid (RA), and salvianolic acid B (SAB) concentrations. Optimized PLSR models were successfully built and used for on-line detecting of the concentrations of DSS, PA, RA, and SAB of water precipitation during Danhong injection. Besides, the information of DSS, PA, RA, and SAB concentrations would be instantly fed back to site technical personnel for control and adjustment timely. The verification experiments determined that the predicted values agreed with the actual homologic value.

Abstract:Molecules without well-resolved absorption spectra within a certain spectral range can be called broadband absorbers. Inspired by Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS), we came up the idea of Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy (WM-UAS) for measuring broadband absorbers. WM-UAS commonly involves two gases, one is the probe gas, another is the target broadband absorber. The only request for implementing WM-UAS is that, within the spectral envelope of the broadband absorber, there exists more than one well-resolved absorption peak of the probe gas. To validate the effectiveness of WM-UAS, methanol was experimentally measured with water vapor as the probe gas. According to Allan deviation analysis, the detection limit was estimated as 1.7 ppm during the optimal average time of 5.4 s. For standard methanol vapor with a concentration of 100.9 ppm, the measurement error was about 1.3%@5.4 s, and for high purity nitrogen, the measurement result was 3.56 ppm@5.4 s. High Repetition Rate Mid-Infrared Differential Absorption Lidar for Atmospheric Pollution Detection

Abstract:Developments in mid-infrared Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL), for gas remote sensing, have received a significant amount of research in recent years. In this paper, a high repetition rate tunable mid-infrared DIAL, mounted on a mobile platform, has been built for long range remote detection of gas plumes. The lidar uses a solid-state tunable optical parametric oscillator laser, which can emit laser pulse with repetition rate of 500 Hz and between the band from 2.5 μm to 4 μm. A monitoring channel has been used to record the laser energy in real-time and correct signals. Convolution correction technology has also been incorporated to choose the laser wavelengths. Taking NO2 and SO2 as examples, lidar system calibration experiment and open field observation experiment have been carried out. The observation results show that the minimum detection sensitivity of NO2 and SO2 can reach 0.07 mg/m3, and 0.31 mg/m3, respectively. The effective temporal resolution can reach second level for the high repetition rate of the laser, which demonstrates that the system can be used for the real-time remote sensing of atmospheric pollution gas.

A broadband absorption spectrometer using light emitting diodes for ultrasensitive, in situ trace gas detection

Abstract:A broadband absorption spectrometer has been developed for highly sensitive and target-selective in situ trace gas measurements. The instrument employs two distinct modes of operation: (i) broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (BBCEAS) is used to quantify the concentration of gases in sample mixtures from their characteristic absorption features, and (ii) periodic measurements of the cavity mirrors' reflectivity are made using step-scan phase shift cavity ringdown spectroscopy (PSCRDS). The latter PSCRDS method provides a stand-alone alternative to the more usual method of determining mirror reflectivities by measuring BBCEAS absorption spectra for calibration samples of known composition. Moreover, the instrument's two modes of operation use light from the same light emitting diode transmitted through the cavity in the same optical alignment, hence minimizing the potential for systematic errors between mirror reflectivity determinations and concentration measurements. The ability of the instrument to quantify absorber concentrations is tested in instrument intercomparison exercises for NO(2) (versus a laser broadband cavity ringdown spectrometer) and for H(2)O (versus a commercial hygrometer). A method is also proposed for calculating effective absorption cross sections for fitting the differential structure in BBCEAS spectra due to strong, narrow absorption lines that are under-resolved and hence exhibit non-Beer-Lambert law behavior at the resolution of the BBCEAS measurements. This approach is tested on BBCEAS spectra of water vapor's 4v+delta absorption bands around 650 nm. The most immediate analytical application of the present instrument is in quantifying the concentration of reactive trace gases in the ambient atmosphere. The instrument's detection limits for NO(3) as a function of integration time are considered in detail using an Allan variance analysis. Experiments under laboratory conditions produce a 1sigma detection limit of 0.25 pptv for a 10 s acquisition time, which improves with further signal averaging to 0.09 pptv in 400 s. Finally, an example of the instrument's performance under field work conditions is presented, in this case of measurements of the sum of NO(3)+N(2)O(5) concentrations in the marine boundary layer acquired during the Reactive Halogens in the Marine Boundary Layer field campaign.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a reflective methane (CH 4 ) gas telemetry system has been developed based on the direct optical absorption spectroscopy technique for an open light path. It can realize the real-time in-situ monitoring of CH 4 gas within a range of 150 m. Considering the potential cross-interference effects of hydrocarbon gases in ambient air, a diode laser operating at a specific wavelength of 1653.7 nm is employed to target the strong CH 4 absorption line in near-infrared region and therefore avoid the interference of water vapor absorption simultaneously. A measurement precision of 0.02 ppm within 40 m open optical path has been achieved over 30 h of continuous monitoring, indicating the excellent measuring sensitivity and stability of our telemetry system. Through the field test of leaked CH 4 gas with a 150 m one-way open optical path, the developed CH 4 telemetry system has proved to have great potential and reliability for environmental monitoring and remote gas detection in various industries.

Abstract:<p>Enhancement of trace gas detectability using photoacoustic spectroscopy requires the effective suppression of strong background noise for practical applications. An upgraded infrared broadband trace gas detection configuration was investigated based on a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer equipped with specially designed T-resonators and simultaneous differential optical and photoacoustic measurement capabilities. By using acetylene and local air as appropriate samples, the detectivity of the differential photoacoustic mode was demonstrated to be far better than the pure optical approach both theoretically and experimentally, due to the effectiveness of light-correlated coherent noise suppression of non-intrinsic optical baseline signals. The wavelet domain denoising algorithm with the optimized parameters was introduced in detail to greatly improve the signal-to-noise ratio by denoising the incoherent ambient interference with respect to the differential photoacoustic measurement. The results showed enhancement of sensitivity to acetylene from 5 ppmv (original differential mode) to 806 ppbv, a fivefold improvement. With the suppression of background noise accomplished by the optimized wavelet domain denoising algorithm, the broadband differential photoacoustic trace gas detection was shown to be an effective approach for trace gas detection.</p>

Abstract:Laser absorption techniques are widely used in combustion research to provide a detailed characterization of reactive media. Recently, the improvements of high-speed infrared camera have enabled the development of laser absorption imaging (LAI) techniques with application to combustion environment. In this paper, we present the development and implementation of the first one-dimensional direct absorption (1D-DA) speciation sensor in the near-infrared, absorption transition near 1391.7 nm, for measuring water in a flat flame. Our 1D-DA sensor relies on a simple structure based on standard optical components, and a novel post-processing method was developed to correct diffraction-like signal deformation. With our 1D-DA sensor, we characterized two C2H4-O2-Ar flames with different equivalence ratios, and validated the results using both the traditional DA method based on a single pixel detector, and Cantera flame simulations using USC-Mech II. Our sensor achieves a spatial resolution better than 70 mu m along along the vertical direction, with an uncertainty estimated to be around 13%. Novelty and Significance Statement 1. Abstract:The vast majority of gaseous chemical substances exhibit fundamental rovibrational absorption bands in the mid-infrared spectral region (2.5–25 μm), and the absorption of light by these fundamental bands provides a nearly universal means for their detection. A main feature of optical techniques is the non-intrusive in situ detection of trace gases. We reviewed primarily mid-infrared tunable laser-based broadband absorption spectroscopy for trace gas detection, focusing on 2008–2018. The scope of this paper is to discuss recent developments of system configuration, tunable lasers, detectors, broadband spectroscopic techniques, and their applications for sensitive, selective, and quantitative trace gas detection.

Abstract:Remote Raman instruments have become powerful analytical tools in some special environments. However, ambient daylight is the main limitation in the data acquisition process. To suppress daylight background interference and obtain a high signal-to-background ratio (SBR), we develop a dual-wavelength wide area illumination Raman difference spectroscopy (WAIRDS) system for daytime remote detection. In the WAIRDS system, a wide area illumination scheme and shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy method are used to improve the reliability of collected Raman spectra. Measurements of polystyrene indicate that the WAIRDS system can be operated to obtain background-free Raman spectra under different levels of daylight background interference. The remote results show that the improvement in SBR is about three- to fivefold, and the system can work at distances of up to 9.2 m on a sunny afternoon. Moreover, to be close to the actual detection, the system is used for mineral and explosive raw material detection during daytime measurement. Measurements show that the WAIRDS system will be a useful tool for many remote applications in the future.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is the third most important greenhouse gas modified by human activities after carbon dioxide and methane. This study examines the feasibility of airborne differential absorption lidar to measure N 2 O concentration enhancements over agricultural, fossil fuel combustion, industrial, and biomass burning sources. The mid-infrared spectral region, where suitably strong N 2 O absorption lines exist, challenges passive remote sensing by means of spectroscopy due to both low solar radiation and thermal emission. Lidar remote sensing is principally possible thanks to the laser as an independent radiation source but has not yet been realized due to technological challenges. Mid-infrared N 2 O absorption bands suitable for remote sensing are investigated. Simulations show that a spectral trough position between two strong N 2 O lines in the 4.5 μm band is the favored option. A second option exists in the 3.9 μm band at the cost of higher laser frequency stability constraints and less measurement sensitivity. Both options fulfill the N 2 O measurement requirements for agricultural areal or point-source emission quantification (0.5 % measurement precision, 500 m spatial resolution) with technically realizable and affordable transmitter (100 mW average laser power) and receiver (20 cm telescope) characteristics for integrated-path differential absorption lidar that measures the column concentration beneath the aircraft. The development of an airborne N 2 O lidar is feasible yet would benefit from progress in infrared laser transmitter and low-noise-detection technology. It will also serve as a precursor to space versions, which are still out of reach due to the lack of space technology.

Artificial Absorption Creation for More Accurate Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement

Abstract:A novel strategy for more accurate tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurement is presented. This method is immune to non-absorption transmission losses, and allows dead zone removal for ultra-low concentration detection, and reference point selection at atmospheric pressure. The method adjusts laser emission and creates artificial absorption peaks according to requirements. By creating an artificial absorption peak next to the real absorption zone, calibration is not necessary. The developed method can be applied to not only wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) but also direct absorption (DA). In WMS, the method does not need two harmonic signals, resulting in higher reliability, better performance, and no electro-optical gain uncertainty. At the same time, non-absorption transmission losses effect is suppressed from 70% to 0.425% with DA and from 70% to 0.225% with WMS method. When the artificial absorption peak coincides with the real one, the dead zone of measurement can be removed to give a lower detection limit, and water vapor still can be detected when concentration is lower than 0.2ppm in our experiment. Reference point selection uncertainty with the DA method, especially when the signal-to-noise ratio is low and absorption line is broad, can also be facilitated. And the uncertainty of reference point selection is improved from 6% to 0.8% by measuring reference point amplitude. The method is demonstrated and validated by WMS and DA measurements of water vapor (1atm, 296K, 1368.597nm). The measurement results obtained using the new method reveal its promise in TDLAS.
Measurement of the Acoustic Relaxation Absorption Spectrum of CO2 Using a Distributed Bragg Reflector Fiber Laser

Abstract:Reconstruction of the acoustic relaxation absorption curve is a powerful approach to ultrasonic gas sensing, but it requires knowledge of a series of ultrasonic absorptions at various frequencies around the effective relaxation frequency. An ultrasonic transducer is the most widely deployed sensor for ultrasonic wave propagation measurement and works only at a fixed frequency or in a specific environment like water, so a large number of ultrasonic transducers operating at various frequencies are required to recover an acoustic absorption curve with a relative large bandwidth, which cannot suit large-scale practical applications. This paper proposes a wideband ultrasonic sensor using a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser for gas concentration detection through acoustic relaxation absorption curve reconstruction. With a relative wide and flat frequency response, the DBR fiber laser sensor measures and restores a full acoustic relaxation absorption spectrum of CO2 using a decompression gas chamber between 0.1 and 1 atm to accommodate the main molecular relaxation processes, and interrogates with a non-equilibrium Mach-Zehnder interferometer (NE-MZI) to gain a sound pressure sensitivity of -45.4 dB. The measurement error of the acoustic relaxation absorption spectrum is less than 1.32%.
Deep-UV Broadband Cavity-Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy: application to sensitive real-time detection of the aromatic pollutants Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene (BTX)

Abstract:Benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) are serious air pollutants emitted by the chemical industry. Real-time monitoring of these air pollutants would be a valuable tool to regulate emissions of these compounds and reduce the harm they cause to human health. Here we demonstrate the first detection of BTX using Incoherent Broadband Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (IBBCEAS). The instrument was operated in the deep-ultraviolet spectral region between 252 and 286 nm, where aromatic compounds have intense π→π* absorption bands. The mirror reflectivity was calibrated by two methods and exceeded 99.63% at 266 nm. At an integration time of 60 s, the 1σ measurement sensitivity was estimated to be 1.4 ppbv (1σ) for benzene, 8.7 ppbv (1σ) for toluene, 7.3 ppbv (1σ) for m-xylene and 3.0 ppbv (1σ) for p-xylene, respectively. The absorption cross-sections of BTX were measured in this work with an uncertainty of 10% at a resolution of 0.74 nm and were in good agreement with earlier studies, after accounting for differences in spectral resolution. To demonstrate the ability of the instrument to quantify complex mixtures, the concentrations of m-xylene and p-xylene were retrieved under five different mixing ratios. The IBBCEAS approach allows real time, in situ measurements with high selectivity, and may be valuable in applications not suited to long-path approaches like DOAS. Instrumental improvements and strategies for different atmospheric and analytical applications are discussed.

Abstract:By combining frequency-division multiplexing and normalized wavelength modulation spectroscopy, a robust remote multi-species sensor was developed and demonstrated for practical hydrocarbon monitoring. Independently modulated laser beams are combined to simultaneously interrogate different gas samples using an open-ended centimeter-size multipass cell. Gas species of interest are demodulated with the second harmonics to enhance sensitivity, and high immunity to laser power variation is achieved by normalizing to the corresponding first harmonics. Performance of the optical sensor was experimentally evaluated using methane (CH4) and acetylene (C2H2) samples, which were separated by a 3-km fiber cable from the laser source. Sub-ppm sensitivity with 1-s time resolution was achieved for both gas species. Moreover, even with large laser intensity fluctuations ranging from 0 to 6 dB, the noise can be kept within 1.38 times as much as that of a stable intensity case. The reported spectroscopic technique would provide a promising optical sensor for remote monitoring of multi hazardous gases with high robustness.

Analysis of Multi-Component Broadband Absorbers Based on Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy (WM-UAS), which is virtually an extension of Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS), for measuring multi-component broadband absorbers is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. "Broadband absorbers" indicates matters that do not exhibit resolved absorption spectra within a certain wavelength range. WM-UAS requires the assistance of a kind of probe substance which exhibits a series of narrow absorption profiles to measure broadband absorbers. An improved WMS technique is first introduced, with which the limitation of low absorbance in conventional WMS is broken through. On this basis, the mathematical expression for WM-UAS is deduced step-by-step. Simulations and experiments are conducted so that the procedures as well as the validity of WM-UAS is presented. In the experiment, water vapor is selected as the probe substance while methanol vapor and ethanol vapor are simultaneously measured. According to Allan deviation analysis, the optimal average time of the system is 150.18 s and the corresponding detection limit is 19.38 ppm.m for ethanol and 14.85 ppm.m for methanol. High Sensitive Scheme for Methane Remote Sensor Based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Methane is an important raw material for various petrochemicals in industrial fields and as also a clean fuel in daily life. However, as an inflammable and explosive material, methane leak can lead to disastrous consequences such as fire and explosion. Furthermore, as a kind of greenhouse gas, methane has stronger influence on global warming than carbon dioxide. In this paper, we present a new high sensitive scheme for methane remote sensing, which can facilitate detection and location of methane leakage. And the 2v(3) band (near 1653.7 nm) of methane is chosen as the target transition which is free from the absorption of the other molecule in atmosphere. A tunable distributed-feedback diode laser is adapted to scan across the target transition. A Fresnel lens with a diameter of 150 mm is employed to collect the ambient backscattering light from natural features such as the buildings. The first harmonic signal is used to normalize the second harmonic signal to remove the influence introduced by the unknown reflectance factor of the actual target, therefore no retro-reflector is needed. Traditional tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) method has difficulty in locating the second harmonic signal peak position in low concentration conditions because of low signal-noise-ratio (SNR). To improve the SNR especially in low concentration environment, a scheme named "baseline-offset" TDLAS is presented in the paper, in which a reference cell filled with standard methane sample is inserted into the measuring optical path. The reference cell can also be used to calibrate the sensor. Furthermore, the reference cell can be used to lock the central frequency of the diode laser to the absorption peak position to monitor concentration fluctuation continuously. In the peak-locking mode, the sensor demodulates the third harmonic signal as error signal to control the injection current of the laser source with PID control. Moreover, one advantage of peak-locking mode is that the measurement frequency is about two orders of magnitude higher than the traditional TDLAS method. With "baseline-offset" TDLAS, the remote sensor described in this paper obtains SNRs as high as 19 and 16 at a stand-off distance of 10 m and 20 m, respectively. With such a high SNR, there is no necessity for complex algorithm in absorption peak position location. By defining the standard deviation of the measuring concentration as the detection limit, experimental results show that the proposed methane remote sensor has detection limits of 5 ppm.m at a distance of 10 m and 16 ppm.m for 20 m, respectively, while measuring the ambient methane. In peak-locked mode, the experimental system has a detection limit of 22 ppm.m at a distance up to 37 m and can monitor rapid concentration fluctuation in.
