Abstract:Environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided potential for battery-powered wireless sensor networks to have perpetual network operations. To design a robust network that can adapt to not only temporal but also spatial variations of ambient energy sources, in this paper, we utilize mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks, by employing a mobile data collector, called SenCar. We propose a two-stage approach for mobile data collection. In the first stage, SenCar makes stops at a subset of selected sensor locations to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We provide a selection algorithm to search for sensor locations with most residual energy while guaranteeing a bounded tour length. Then we design a distributed data gathering algorithm to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling and flow routing that adapts to spatial temporal environmental energy variations. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms are validated by extensive numerical results.

Abstract:Recent advances in environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided great potentials for traditional battery powered sensor networks to achieve perpetual operations. Due to dynamics from the temporal profiles of ambient energy sources, most of the studies so far have focused on designing and optimizing energy management schemes on single sensor node, but overlooked the impact of spatial variations of energy distribution when sensors work together at different locations. To design a robust sensor network, in this paper, we use mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks caused by spatial energy variations. We employ a mobile collector, called SenCar, to collect data from designated sensors and balance energy consumptions in the network. To show spatial-temporal energy variations, we first conduct a case study in a solar-powered network and analyze possible impact on network performance. Next, we present a two-step approach for mobile data collection. First, we adaptively select a subset of sensor locations where the SenCar stops to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We develop an adaptive algorithm to search for nodes based on their energy and guarantee data collection tour length is bounded. Second, we focus on designing distributed algorithms to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling, and flow routing that adapts to the spatial-temporal environmental energy fluctuations. Finally, our numerical results indicate the distributed algorithms can converge to optimality very fast and validate its convergence in case of node failure. We also show advantages of our framework such as it can adapt to spatial-temporal energy variations and demonstrate its superiority compared to the network with static data sink.

Abstract:In this paper, a three-layer framework is proposed for mobile data collection in wireless sensor networks, which includes the sensor layer, cluster head layer, and mobile collector (called SenCar) layer. The framework employs distributed load balanced clustering and dual data uploading, which is referred to as LBC-DDU. The objective is to achieve good scalability, long network lifetime and low data collection latency. At the sensor layer, a distributed load balanced clustering (LBC) algorithm is proposed for sensors to self-organize themselves into clusters. In contrast to existing clustering methods, our scheme generates multiple cluster heads in each cluster to balance the work load and facilitate dual data uploading. At the cluster head layer, the inter-cluster transmission range is carefully chosen to guarantee the connectivity among the clusters. Multiple cluster heads within a cluster cooperate with each other to perform energy-saving inter-cluster communications. Through inter-cluster transmissions, cluster head information is forwarded to SenCar for its moving trajectory planning. At the mobile collector layer, SenCar is equipped with two antennas, which enables two cluster heads to simultaneously upload data to SenCar in each time by utilizing multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technique. The trajectory planning for SenCar is optimized to fully utilize dual data uploading capability by properly selecting polling points in each cluster. By visiting each selected polling point, SenCar can efficiently gather data from cluster heads and transport the data to the static data sink. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed LBC-DDU scheme. The results show that when each cluster has at most two cluster heads, LBC-DDU achieves over 50 percent energy saving per node and 60 percent energy saving on cluster heads comparing with data collection through multi-hop relay to the static data sink, and 20 percent shorter data collection time compared to traditional mobile data gathering.

Abstract:The emerging wireless energy transfer technology enables charging sensor batteries in a wireless sensor network (WSN) and maintaining perpetual operation of the network. Recent breakthrough in this area has opened up a new dimension to the design of sensor network protocols. In the meanwhile, mobile data gathering has been considered as an efficient alternative to data relaying in WSNs. However, time variation of recharging rates in wireless rechargeable sensor networks imposes a great challenge in obtaining an optimal data gathering strategy. In this paper, we propose a framework of joint Wireless Energy Replenishment and anchor-point based Mobile Data Gathering (WerMDG) in WSNs by considering various sources of energy consumption and time-varying nature of energy replenishment. To that end, we first determine the anchor point selection and the sequence to visit the anchor points. We then formulate the WerMDG problem into a network utility maximization problem which is constrained by flow conversation, energy balance, link and battery capacity and the bounded sojourn time of the mobile collector. Furthermore, we present a distributed algorithm composed of cross-layer data control, scheduling and routing subalgorithms for each sensor node, and sojourn time allocation subalgorithm for the mobile collector at different anchor points. Finally, we give extensive numerical results to verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm and the impact of utility weight on network performance.

Abstract:Bounding node-to-sink latency is an important issue of wireless sensor networks WSNs with a quality of service requirement. This paper proposes to deploy multiple sinks to control the worst case node-to-sink data latency in WSNs. The end-to-end latency in multihop wireless networks is known to be proportional to the hop length of the routing path that the message moves over. Therefore, we formulate the question of what is the minimum number of sinks and their locations to bound the latency as the minimum d-hop sink placement problem. We also consider its capacitated version. We show problems are NP-hard in unit disk graph UDG and unit ball graph, and propose constant factor approximations of the problems in both graph models. We further extend our algorithms so that they can work well in more realistic quasi UDG model. A simulation study is also conducted to see the average performance of our algorithms.
A Distributed Localization Scheme Based on Mobility Prediction for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:A distributed localization scheme based on mobility prediction for mobile underwater wireless sensor networks is proposed. Anchor nodes perform self-localization and mobility prediction, and serve as reference nodes to localize ordinary nodes. According to the group movement properties of underwater objects, ordinary nodes perform self-localization by utilizing the neighboring nodes' locations and their predicted speed vectors. Well-localized ordinary nodes serve as reference nodes to localize neighbors further. The modified covariance algorithm is employed to estimate the linear prediction parameters of the mobility pattern. A Node-Selection Strategy is proposed to select the most suitable reference nodes to localize an ordinary node. The simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The viability and success of wireless sensor networks critically hinge on the ability of a small number of sinks to glean sensor data throughout the networks. Thus, the locations of sinks are critically important. In this paper, we examine the sink location privacy problem from both the attack and defense perspectives. First, we examine resource-constrained adversaries who can only eavesdrop the network at their vicinities. To determine the sink location, they can launch a Zeroing-In attack by leveraging the fact that several network metrics are 2-dimensional functions in the plane of the network, and their values minimize at the sink. Thus, determining the sink location is equivalent to finding the minima of those functions. We demonstrate that by obtaining the hop counts or the arrival time of a broadcast packet at a few spots in the network, the adversaries are able to determine the sink location with the accuracy of one radio range, which is sufficient to disable the sink by launching jamming attacks, for example. To cope with the Zeroing-In attacks, we present a directed-walk-based routing scheme and show that the defense strategy is effective in deceiving adversaries at little energy costs.

Abstract:Localization is one of the most important subjects in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). To reduce the number of beacons and adopt probabilistic methods, some particle filter-based mobile beacon-assisted localization approaches have been proposed, such as Mobile Beacon-assisted Localization (MBL), Adapting MBL (A-MBL), and the method proposed by Hang et al. Some new significant problems arise in these approaches, however. The first question is which probability distribution should be selected as the dynamic model in the prediction stage. The second is whether the unknown node adopts neighbors' observation in the update stage. The third is how to find a self-adapting mechanism to achieve more flexibility in the adapting stage. In this paper, we give the theoretical analysis and experimental evaluations to suggest which probability distribution in the dynamic model should be adopted to improve the efficiency in the prediction stage. We also give the condition for whether the unknown node should use the observations from its neighbors to improve the accuracy. Finally, we propose a Self-Adapting Mobile Beacon-assisted Localization (SA-MBL) approach to achieve more flexibility and achieve almost the same performance with A-MBL.

Abstract:The benefits of using mobile sink to prolong sensor network lifetime have been well recognized. However, few provably theoretical results remain are developed due to the complexity caused by time-dependent network topology. In this work, we investigate the optimum routing strategy for the static sensor network. We further propose a number of motion stratifies for the mobile sink(s) to gather real time data from static sensor network, with the objective to maximize the network lifetime. Specially, we consider a more realistic model where the moving speed and path for mobile sinks are constrained. Our extensive experiments show that our scheme can significantly prolong entire network lifetime and reduce delivery delay.

Abstract:We study data gathering problem in Rechargeable Sensor Networks (RSNs) with a mobile sink, where rechargeable sensors are deployed into a region of interest to monitor the environment and a mobile sink travels along a pre-defined path to collect data from sensors periodically. In such RSNs, the optimal data gathering is challenging because the required energy consumption for data transmission changes with the movement of the mobile sink and the available energy is time-varying. In this paper, we formulate data gathering problem as a network utility maximization problem, which aims at maximizing the total amount of data collected by the mobile sink while maintaining the fairness of network. Since the instantaneous optimal data gathering scheme changes with time, in order to obtain the globally optimal solution, we first transform the primal problem into an approximate network utility maximization problem by shifting the energy consumption conservation and analyzing necessary conditions for the optimal solution. As a result, each sensor does not need to estimate the amount of harvested energy and the problem dimension is reduced. Then, we propose a Distributed Data Gathering Approach (DDGA), which can be operated distributively by sensors, to obtain the optimal data gathering scheme. Extensive simulations are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Data collection by multiple sinks is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks. Existing work focused on designing optimal offline algorithms provided that the number and positions of sensors and sinks are predetermined. This may not be practical as, though sensors are cheap, sinks are quite expensive in reality. A more practical scenario is that sinks are deployed step by step during the network operation due to the budget constraint, and we do not know the number, positions and capacities of sinks in prior. In this paper we investigate such an optimal data collection problem by multiple sinks, and design a near-optimal online algorithm via primal-dual approach, requiring very little priori knowledge. We theoretically derive the competitive ratio and show how to improve it by finding the optimal sink location region with an approximation ratio. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed online algorithm.

Abstract:In wireless sensor network, mobile sink is used to collect data from sensor nodes by periodically traversing the network to prevent hotspot problem. However, when sensor nodes generate data non-uniformly, the efficiency of data collection is constrained by rendezvous points and network topology. It becomes more challenging under network energy consumption constraint. Thus, this paper investigates non-uniform data generation in wireless sensor network and proposes an innovative approach: Optimal Clustering and Network Topology for Mobile Sink-Driven Data Collection, called OCNTMS. It focuses on determining optimal rendezvous points and their associated clusters. Through innovative methods such as weight-balanced clustering, cost function optimization, load-balanced link construction, and node forwarding selection, the OCNTMS can efficiently construct link sets within clusters and accurately plan the mobile sink's traversal of rendezvous points. Simulation results show that the OCNTMS reduces energy consumption by 18% and increases network lifetime by 40% compared with existing approaches under the constraint of non-uniform data generation. This greatly improves the network energy efficiency and data transmission efficiency.

Abstract:This paper investigates the sink positioning problem in Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) with the consideration of the energy-latency trade-offs. Energy-efficiency and low-latency are two major objectives in most researches on WSNs. Positioning the sink properly and exploiting its mobility can improve the two performances. A novel linear programming model is proposed to solve the sink positioning problem. Its objective function represents the overall performance of the network lifespan and the average packet latency. We can get not only the position pattern of the sink but also the sojourn time ratio for each possible position according to the optimization results. Simulations are accomplished on NS-2. The results show that compared with a static sink approach or a positioning approach which only concerns the energy-efficiency, our approach can greatly shorten the average packet latency and prolong the network lifespan, especially when the sensor nodes are distributed asymmetrically or the traffic load is unbalanced.

Abstract:Mobile sinks have been widely used for data gathering in mobile-enabled wireless sensor networks (mWSNs). However, the frequent network topology dynamics caused by sink mobility in mWSNs may cause excessive protocol overhead for route discovery and maintenance and therefore routing performance degradation. In this paper, we design a new distributed routing protocol for achieving high routing performance in such networks. The designed routing protocol works in a reactive way for route learning/updating and it combines trail based forwarding and data-driven route learning/updating for improved performance as sink(s) move in the network. We present detailed design description of the new protocol. Simulation results show that our protocol can achieve high packet delivery ratio performance with low protocol overhead.

Abstract:Recent works on WSNs show that use of mobile sink can prolong network lifetime. This paper demonstrates the advantages of the mobile sink in WSNs for increasing their lifetime than static sink. A novel sink mobility with coverage algorithm has been proposed here. During the movement of the sinks in the network, they sojourn at different points in the network and collect data over there. The direction of the movement of the sinks is determined by the algorithm and sinks are mobile inside the network. This algorithm can also be used for multiple sinks partitioned network. Simulations has been carried out for both mobile and static sinks to determine the average energy consumption of the network. At the same time, it also determines the network lifetime in terms of number of rounds neighbor nodes of sink is alive and first node die of the network. Our experiments show that mobile sinks outperform static sink in all scenarios. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm results in a good balancing of energy depletion among the sensor nodes.

Abstract:Tradition wireless sensor networks (WSNs) transmit data by single or multiple hops. However, some sensor nodes (SNs) close to a static base station forward data more frequently than others, which results in the problem of energy holes and makes networks fragile. One promising solution is to use a mobile node as a mobile sink (MS), which is especially useful in energy-constrained networks. In these applications, the tour planning of MS is a key to guarantee the network performance. In this paper, a novel strategy is proposed to reduce the latency of mobile data gathering in a WSN while the routing strategies and tour planning of MS are jointly optimized. First, the issue of network coverage is discussed before the appropriate number of clusters being calculated. A dynamic clustering scheme is then developed where a virtual cluster center is defined as the MS sojourn for data collection. Afterwards, a tour planning of MS based on prediction is proposed subject to minimizing the traveling distance to collect data. The proposed method is simulated in a MATLAB platform to show the overall performance of the developed system. Furthermore, the physical tests on a test rig are also carried out where a small WSN based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is developed in our laboratory. The test results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method proposed.

Abstract:Using a mobile sink for data collection from the sensors has been considered as a good way to prolong the network lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To avoid the problems of long delay and data non-fresh, some previous studies selected a set of data collection points (CPs) and all the other sensors transmit their data to the closest CP in a multi-hop manner. Then the mobile sink only needs to visit and collect data from the selected CPs, reducing the path length of the mobile sink and the time required for collecting data from all sensors. This paper proposes a data collection mechanism, called DDCF, which uses a mobile sink to collect data in a heterogeneous WSN(HWSN), aiming to prolong the network lifetime while improving the surveillance coverage. The proposed DDCF mainly consists of CP selection and tree topology construction phases in each round. The CP selection phase takes into consideration multiple parameters including remaining energy, coverage contribution as well as data fusion degree and then dynamically selects CPs in each round for balancing the lifetime of CPs and improving the surveillance quality. In the tree topology construction phase, each sensor selects its parent by considering the remaining energy, data fusion degree and transmission success ratio, which aims to dynamically construct a tree topology for further reducing and balancing the energy consumptions of sensor nodes. Performance study shows that the proposed DDCF outperforms existing studies in terms of network lifetime, fairness as well as surveillance quality.

Abstract:Underwater mobile sensor networks (UMSNs) with free-floating sensors are more suitable for understanding the immense underwater environment. Target tracking, whose performance depends on sensor localization accuracy, is one of the broad applications of UMSNs. However, in UMSNs, sensors move with environmental forces, so their positions change continuously, which poses a challenge on the accuracy of sensor localization and target tracking. We propose a high-accuracy localization with mobility prediction (HLMP) algorithm to acquire relatively accurate sensor location estimates. The HLMP algorithm exploits sensor mobility characteristics and the multi-step Levinson-Durbin algorithm to predict future positions. Furthermore, we present a simultaneous localization and target tracking (SLAT) algorithm to update sensor locations based on measurements during the process of target tracking. Simulation results demonstrate that the HLMP algorithm can improve localization accuracy significantly with low energy consumption and that the SLAT algorithm can further decrease the sensor localization error. In addition, results prove that a better localization accuracy will synchronously improve the target tracking performance.

Abstract:This work introduces a multifactor optimized mobile sink data collection framework for hybrid WSN‐LTE‐assisted IoT systems. This framework addresses the problem of efficient placement of data collection points and finding the order of visits as a two‐stage optimization approach. Summary The wireless sensor network‐assisted Internet of Things convergence has diverse applications. In most applications, the sensors are battery‐powered, and it is necessary to use the energy judiciously to extend their functional duration effectively. Mobile sinks‐based data collection is used to extend the lifespan of these networks. However, providing a scalable and effective solution with consideration for multicriteria factors of quality of service and lifetime maximization is still a challenge. This work addresses this problem with a hybrid wireless sensor network with long‐term evolution‐assisted architecture. The issue of maximizing lifetime and providing multifactor quality of service is solved as a two‐stage optimization problem involving clustering and data collection path scheduling. Hybrid meta‐heuristics is used to solve the clustering optimization problem. Minimal Steiner tree‐based graph theory is applied to schedule the data collection path for sinks. Unlike existing works, the lifetime maximization without QoS degradation is addressed by hybridizing multiple approaches of multicriteria optimal clustering, optimal path scheduling, and network adaptive traffic class‐based data scheduling. This hybridization extends the network's lifespan and improves the QoS regarding packet transmission within the proposed solution. Through simulation analysis, the introduced approach yields a noteworthy increase of at least 6% and reduces packet delivery delay by 26% compared with existing methodologies.

Abstract:In recent years, the big data emerged as a hot topic because of the rapid growth of the information and wireless communication technology. One of the significant sources of the big data is wireless sensor networks. Due to the power limitation of sensor nodes, energy-efficient big data collecting is a challenging task in wireless sensor networks. Being considered as an effective solution to address this challenge is to utilize sink’s mobility to assist data collecting. Although this method can reduce the volume of data transfer between sensor nodes and thus save energy consumption of nodes, the low speed of mobile sink hinders its use in data-intensive sensing applications with time constraint. In this article, we propose a four-phase mobility-assisted data collecting protocol consisting of network clustering, routes planning, routes combination, and data collecting. Two heuristic routes planning algorithms are presented to build a set of trajectories which satisfy the deadline constraint and have the minimum overall movement cost. Numeric results show that our approaches have better performance in terms of energy saving, latency, and movement cost.
