Abstract:Interpersonal ties, such as strong ties and weak ties, describe the information carried by an edge in social network. Tracking the dynamic changes of interpersonal ties can thus enhance our understanding of the evolution of a complex network. Nevertheless, existing studies in dynamic network visualization mostly focus on the temporal changes of nodes or structures of the network without an adequate support of analysis and exploration of the temporal changes of interpersonal ties. In this paper, we introduce a new visual analytics method that enables interactive analysis and exploration of the dynamic changes of interpersonal ties. The method integrates four well-linked visualizations, including a scatterplot, a pixelbar chart, a layered graph, and a node–link diagram, to allow for multi-perspective analysis of the evolution of interpersonal ties. The scatterplot created by multi-dimensional scaling can help reveal the clusters of ties and detect abnormal ties, while other visualizations allow users to explore the clusters of ties interactively from different perspectives. Abstract:The exploration and analysis of data mining methodologies is an important task for effective knowledge discovery, especially in today's heterogeneous information networks. Previously presented approaches for mining optimization aim primarily at the improvements of time complexity, space complexity, accuracy, and robustness. We extend the state-of-the-art method by concentrating on user-availability and algorithm understandability. Specifically, we use Rankclus, a classic clustering algorithm as an example. After uncovering the unseen computing processes to be displayed in a visual form, the whole clustering processes are transparent to the users, which may help them more clearly and quickly understand how the algorithms are computed, how does each object influence one another. In addition, we use a density approach to intuitively simplify the discovery of data patterns, and through the visualized results, users can adjust algorithm parameters with or without professional training. Finally, we use another two visual techniques to improve the visualization quality: a heatmap matrix designed for checking the similarities of objects which are in the same cluster, and a DOItree implemented to further analyze the accuracy of the algorithms.

Abstract:Dynamic networks evolve with their structures changing over time. It is still a challenging problem to efficiently explore the evolution of dynamic networks in terms of both their structural and temporal properties. In this paper, we propose a visual analytics methodology to interactively explore the temporal evolution of dynamic networks in the context of their structure. A novel diachronic node embedding method is first proposed to learn latent representations of the structural and temporal features of nodes in a vector space. Diachronic node embeddings are then used to discover communities with similar structural proximity and temporal evolution patterns. A visual analytics system is designed to enable users to visually explore the evolutions of nodes, communities, and the network as a whole in terms of their structural and temporal properties. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method using artificial and real-world dynamic networks and comparisons with previous methods.

Abstract:Exploratory analysis is an important way to gain understanding and find unknown relationships from various data sources, especially in the era of big data. Traditional paradigms of social science data analysis follow the steps of feature selection, modeling, and prediction. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm that does not require feature selection so that data can speak for itself without manually picking out features. Besides, we propose using the deep network as a methodology to explore previously unknown relationships and capture complexity and non-linearity between target variables and a large number of input features for big social data. The new paradigm tends to be a relatively generic approach that can be widely used in different scenarios. In order to validate the feasibility of the paradigm, we use country-level indicators forecasting as a case study. The process includes: 1) data collection and preparation and 2) modeling and experiment. The data collection and preparation part builds a data warehouse and conducts the extract-transform-load process to eliminate data format inconsistency. The modeling and experiment part includes model setup and model structures change to achieve relatively high accuracy on prediction results at both model level and case level. We find some patterns about network capacity modification and the influence of time interval difference on the test results, whereas both of them deserve further research.
SpreadLine: Visualizing Egocentric Dynamic Influence

Abstract:Egocentric networks, often visualized as node-link diagrams, portray the complex relationship (link) dynamics between an entity (node) and others. However, common analytics tasks are multifaceted, encompassing interactions among four key aspects: strength, function, structure, and content. Current node-link visualization designs may fall short, focusing narrowly on certain aspects and neglecting the holistic, dynamic nature of egocentric networks. To bridge this gap, we introduce SpreadLine, a novel visualization framework designed to enable the visual exploration of egocentric networks from these four aspects at the microscopic level. Leveraging the intuitive appeal of storyline visualizations, SpreadLine adopts a storyline-based design to represent entities and their evolving relationships. We further encode essential topological information in the layout and condense the contextual information in a metro map metaphor, allowing for a more engaging and effective way to explore temporal and attribute-based information. To guide our work, with a thorough review of pertinent literature, we have distilled a task taxonomy that addresses the analytical needs specific to egocentric network exploration. Acknowledging the diverse analytical requirements of users, SpreadLine offers customizable encodings to enable users to tailor the framework for their tasks. We demonstrate the efficacy and general applicability of SpreadLine through three diverse real-world case studies (disease surveillance, social media trends, and academic career evolution) and a usability study.

Predictive Analysis for Social Diffusion: The Role of Network Communities

Abstract:The diffusion of information and behaviors over social networks is of considerable interest in research fields ranging from sociology to computer science and application domains such as marketing, finance, human health, and national security. Of particular interest is the possibility to develop predictive capabilities for social diffusion, for instance enabling early identification of diffusion processes which are likely to become "viral" and propagate to a significant fraction of the population. Recently we have shown, using theoretical analysis, that the dynamics of social diffusion may depend crucially upon the interactions of social network communities, that is, densely connected groupings of individuals which have only relatively few links between groups. This paper presents an empirical investigation of two related hypotheses which follow from this finding: 1.) inter-community interaction is predictive of the reach of social diffusion and 2.) dispersion of the diffusion phenomenon across network communities is a useful early indicator that the propagation will be "successful". We explore these hypotheses with case studies involving the emergence of the Swedish Social Democratic Party at the turn of the 20th century, the spread of the SARS virus in 2002-2003, and blogging dynamics associated with real world protest activity. These empirical studies demonstrate that network community-based diffusion metrics do indeed possess predictive power, and in fact can be more useful than standard measures.

Abstract:In many big data applications, it’s important to explore and understand multivariate networks, whose nodes and edges contain multi dimensional attributes. A core challenge is connecting big data with people; that is, presenting—in an understandable and manageable way— the structural and multivariate aspects of data to humans so they can explore both aspects simultaneously to gain insights on the data. In “Multivariate Network Exploration and Presentation: From Detail to Overview via Selections and Aggregations” (IEEE Trans. Visualization and Computer Graphics, vol. 20, no. 12, 2014, pp. 2310–2319), Stef van den Elzen and Jarke van Wijk propose a novel solution to this challenge. When analyzing multivariate networks, users often want to understand the relationship between the network structure and its elements’ properties to answer questions like whether communication patterns differ between males and females, or whether people migrate to places with similar characteristics. To answer such questions, the authors present an approach based on an interactive exploration of the data, from detailed views to high-level overviews via selections and aggregations. For example, users can interactively select a set of nodes. The results are then shown as a detailed view of the nodes and their connecting edges and as a schematic diagram in a high-level overview (see Figure 1), which facilitates exploration. Building on an important trend in visualization, this work combines standard, simple, and familiar metaphors to explore complex data. As shown in Figure 1, the visualization components are standard and familiar: a scatterplot for showing details, an infographic-style overview, and a set of chart visualizations. However, the proposed combination is novel and effective for both data presentation and exploration.

Abstract:Adding temporal information to social network visualizations is still a challenging task despite previous research efforts. The dimension time is of great interest to analysts as it offers insights into various trends and patterns such as changing relationships between different actors or economic opportunities for businesses. Yet current approaches suffer from limitations that can be improved with the visualization design presented in this work. The visualization was developed considering aesthetic criteria and characteristics of adjacency matrices and node-link diagrams. In a formative evaluation process an artificial dataset was specifically created to examine dynamic social networks. A qualitative user study with observation and think-aloud protocols was conducted and analyzed with regard to the user's strategies, limitations of the visualization and potential additional features. The visualization appears to be suitable for all of the evaluated network tasks, however, path-related tasks were more challenging similar to the characteristics of matrix-based representations.

Abstract:Many data analysis problems rely on dynamic networks, such as social or communication network analyses. Providing a scalable overview of long sequences of such dynamic networks remains challenging due to the underlying large-scale data containing elusive topological changes. We propose two complementary pixel-based visualizations, which reflect occurrences of selected sub-networks (motifs) and provide a time-scalable overview of dynamic networks: a network-level census (motif significance profiles) linked with a node-level sub-network metric (graphlet degree vectors) views to reveal structural changes, trends, states, and outliers. The network census captures significantly occurring motifs compared to their expected occurrences in random networks and exposes structural changes in a dynamic network. The sub-network metrics display the local topological neighborhood of a node in a single network belonging to the dynamic network. The linked pixel-based visualizations allow exploring motifs in different-sized networks to analyze the changing structures within and across dynamic networks, for instance, to visually analyze the shape and rate of changes in the network topology. We describe the identification of visual patterns, also considering different reordering strategies to emphasize visual patterns. We demonstrate the approach's usefulness by a use case analysis based on real-world large-scale dynamic networks, such as the evolving social networks of Reddit or Facebook.

Abstract:The broad adoption of the web as a communication medium has made it possible to study social behavior at a new scale. With social media networks such as Twitter, we can collect large data sets of online discourse. Social science researchers and journalists, however, may not have tools available to make sense of large amounts of data or of the structure of large social networks. In this paper, we describe our recent extensions to Truthy, a system for collecting and analyzing political discourse on Twitter. We introduce several new analytical perspectives on online discourse with the goal of facilitating collaboration between individuals in the computational and social sciences. The design decisions described in this article are motivated by real-world use cases developed in collaboration with colleagues at the Indiana University School of Journalism.

Abstract:Collective idea generation and innovation processes are complex and dynamic, involving a large amount of qualitative narrative information that is difficult to monitor, analyze, and visualize using traditional methods. In this study, we developed three new visualization methods for collective idea generation and innovation processes and applied them to data from online social network experiments. The first visualization is the Idea Cloud, which helps monitor collective idea posting activity and intuitively tracks idea clustering and transition. The second visualization is the Idea Geography, which helps understand how the idea space and its utility landscape are structured and how collaboration was performed in that space. The third visualization is the Idea Network, which connects idea dynamics with the social structure of the people who generated them, displaying how social influence among neighbors may have affected collaborative activities and where innovative ideas arose and spread in the social network.

On each slide, an analyst can freely explore the network and specify nodes, links, or subgraphs as seed elements for follow-up tours. Two studies, comprising eight expert and 14 novice analysts, show that data tours reduce exploration effort, support learning about network exploration, and can aid the dissemination of analysis results. Abstract:This study aims to explore how network visualization provides opportunities for learners to explore data literacy concepts using locally and personally relevant data. The researchers designed six locally relevant network visualization activities to support students' data reasoning practices toward understanding aggregate patterns in data. Cultural historical activity theory (Engeström, 1999) guides the analysis to identify how network visualization activities mediate students' emerging understanding of aggregate data sets. Pre/posttest findings indicate that this implementation positively impacted students' understanding of network visualization concepts, as they were able to identify and interpret key relationships from novel networks. Interaction analysis (Jordan and Henderson, 1995) of video data revealed nuances of how activities mediated students' improved ability to interpret network data. Some challenges noted in other studies, such as students' tendency to focus on familiar concepts, are also noted as teachers supported conversations to help students move beyond them. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study the authors are aware of that supported elementary students in exploring data literacy through network visualization. The authors discuss how network visualizations and locally/personally meaningful data provide opportunities for learning data literacy concepts across the curriculum.

Abstract:We propose a novel visual analytics approach based on the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model for exploring and interpreting the dynamic evolution of networks. In this approach, we define networks as documents and relationships within networks as words. Using this definition, the LDA model is able to extract a list of structures that fuse relationships and connect the network features. We project networks described by the extracted structures with probabilistic assignments as points into a two-dimensional space via dimensionality reduction techniques. Users can identify evolution states in dynamic networks, including stable states, recurrent states, outlier states, and state transitions. To facilitate the interpretation of evolution states, we provide a novel small multiples view that shows how the extracted structures behave over time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our work through case studies conducted on two real-world dynamic networks.

Abstract:Objectives: To understand the research landscape and identify the research hotspots and trends of the application of social network theory and analysis to public health.Study design: A bibliometric study of publications regarding application of social network theory and analysis to public health.Methods: Choosing 1607 articles about the application of social network theory and analysis to public health from the core collection database of Web of Science published from 1991 to 2020 as the research sample. A bibliometric and visual analysis of publication quantity and content was performed to analyze time trends, spatial distribution, cooperation networks, influential references, and keyword co-occurrence, clusters, and emergence.Results: There is an increasing trend in the use of social network theory and analysis in the public health field, with the United States taking the lead. Research focuses include on transmission of diseases or behavior through social networks and the influence of social networks on population health at different ages. Current research frontiers primarily include the role of social networks in tracking of emerging infectious diseases like COVID-19, preventing and controlling chronic diseases, and carrying out healthy behavioral interventions.Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive quantitative overview of the historic development of and latest topics in the application of social network theory and analysis method to public health. More attention should be paid to the important role of social networks in tracing the emergence of serious infectious diseases like COVID-19, as well as preventing and controlling chronic diseases and intervening in health behaviors, considering the increasing challenges and opportunities presented by online social networking.

Abstract:The discovery of phenomena in social networks has prompted renewed interests in the field. Data in social networks however can be massive, requiring scalable Big Data architecture. Conversely, research in Big Data needs the volume and velocity of social media data for testing its scalability. Not only so, appropriate data processing and mining of acquired datasets involve complex issues in the variety, veracity, and variability of the data, after which visualisation must occur before we can see fruition in our efforts. This article presents topical, multimodal, and longitudinal social media datasets from the integration of various scalable open source technologies. The article details the process that led to the discovery of social information landscapes within the Twitter social network, highlighting the experience of dealing with social media datasets, using a funneling approach so that data becomes manageable. The article demonstrated the feasibility and value of using scalable open source technologies for acquiring massive, connected datasets for research in the social sciences.

Abstract:Networks have become the de facto diagram of the Big Data age (try searching Google Images for [big data AND visualisation] and see). The concept of networks has become central to many fields of human inquiry and is said to revolutionise everything from medicine to markets to military intelligence. While the mathematical and analytical capabilities of networks have been extensively studied over the years, in this article we argue that the storytelling affordances of networks have been comparatively neglected. In order to address this we use multimodal analysis to examine the stories that networks evoke in a series of journalism articles. We develop a protocol by means of which narrative meanings can be construed from network imagery and the context in which it is embedded, and discuss five different kinds of narrative readings of networks, illustrated with analyses of examples from journalism. Finally, to support further research in this area, we discuss methodological issues that we encountered and suggest directions for future study to advance and broaden research around this defining aspect of visual culture after the digital turn.
