Abstract:Abstract Introduction Among all types of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, the name of the Territorial Defense Force reflects its character and purpose to the greatest extent. The goals and tasks set for it depend on the specific defense needs of the state. In the light of current nutritional knowledge, rational nutrition is one of the basic conditions for the proper functioning of the human body and maintaining its good health. Particularly important is the state of nutrition in the case of soldiers performing combat tasks. The aim of the study was to assess the level of nutritional knowledge of soldiers in the context of the implementation of training tasks. Material and methods The nutritional knowledge of soldiers was verified on the basis of an open survey, with the use of a proprietary questionnaire containing 20 closed-ended questions. The study covered 106 soldiers of the Territorial Defense Force, undergoing military training. The questions included in the questionnaire concerned the principles of rational nutrition and the sources of some of the nutrients in a daily diet. In addition, the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated for each respondent based on the height and body weight values. The results of the survey were prepared using Excel and Statistica software. Results and discussion The applied BMI classification showed this may be evidenced by over 40% of the respondents being overweight, while 17% demonstrated first degree obesity, and 1% — second degree obesity. The results of the survey indicated the areas in which the nutritional knowledge of the examined group of soldiers was insufficient. One of the reasons for this is the source of information on rational nutrition. Content provided by friends or obtained from the Internet may mislead soldiers, and incorrect application of nutrition guidelines may cause them to eat unbalanced food rations, which is likely to reduce a soldier's physical capacity, concentration, responsiveness, and the possibility of intense physical activity during the performance of official tasks. Taking into account the BMI results and the low level of nutritional knowledge, it can be concluded that the nutrition safety of the Territorial Defense Force soldiers is at risk, which may stimulate the emergence and development of a number of diet-related civilization diseases. It is purposeful to conduct systematic training of Territorial Defense Force soldiers in the field of rational nutrition. This will help to improve their nutritional knowledge and maintain good health.

Physical Activity and Eating Habits of Polish Navy Soldiers and Border Guard Officers—A Comparative Analysis

Abstract:Background: Physical fitness and a healthy body mass are important predictors of a good performance of military tasks. The purpose of this study was to assess the physical activity level and nutrition, in terms of the frequency of consumption of individual food groups, of Polish Navy soldiers and Maritime Unit of the Border Guard officers. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 131 Polish Navy soldiers aged 33.1 ± 6.3 years old and 132 Maritime Unit of the Border Guard officers aged 38.6 ± 5.5 years old. In order to carry out research on physical activity, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used. Eating habits were assessed based on a Food Frequency Questionnaire for 61 groups of food products. Results: Over 80% of the soldiers and officers studied indicated high levels of physical activity. Only 8.2% of soldiers and 4.3% of officers indicated a low level of physical activity. Of the 61 food product groups analyzed, significant differences were found in the frequency of consumption of 17 products. These differences concerned almost all groups (except dairy products and eggs). Conclusions: To summarize, soldiers and officers presented high and moderate levels of physical activity. Taking into account the demonstrated frequent consumption of high-energy and high-fat products, such as sausages and red meat, as well as margarine, mayonnaise, and sugar, with the low frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption in both studied groups, it is advisable to conduct training among soldiers and officers in the field of health education.

Psychomotor performance of Polish Air Force cadets after 36 hours of survival training

Abstract:Introduction: The preparation of Polish Air Force cadets for survival in isolation is a necessary element of their training, to demonstrate just how difficult can be the conditions they could encounter in a combat situation. Objective. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of long-term survival training on selected coordination motor skills in Air Force cadets. Material and methods: Fifteen air force cadets aged 19.6±0.3 years exercised for 36 hours during survival training without the possibility to sleep. They were examined 4 times: Day 1 - before effort (training), Day 2 - after 24 hours training, Day 3 - directly after 36 hours training, Day 4 - next day, after an all night rest. They were examined for shooting and reaction time, the ability to maintain body balance, running motor adjustment, handgrip force differentiation, and on Days 1 and 3, exercise capacity was evaluated with a 1 mile walking test. Results: The survival training resulted in significant decreases in maximum handgrip strength, corrected 50% max handgrip, maintenance of body balance and heart rate. No changes occurred in reaction time, running motor adjustment and shooting performance. Overnight rest did not result in recovery of any of the examined factors to the values observed on Day 1. Conclusions: Survival training combined with sleep deprivation mostly affected peripheral factors depending on strong action from both muscles and nervous system, whereas complex tasks involving short-term central alertness and moderate exertion were maintained. In order to improve performance, more endurance strength training, if possible combined with sleep deprivation, should be introduced in military training.
Assessment of the Body Composition and Bone Calcification of Students of Police Schools and Police Training Centers in Poland-A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:The 21st century is considered the age of malnutrition resulting in the unprecedented frequency of civilization diseases. Among these disorders, obesity is particularly distinguished and considered an epidemic-scale disease. For this reason, conducting studies on obesity and counteracting this phenomenon is essential. Research from recent years indicates a problem of excessive body weight among officers of uniformed services, who should be characterized by good health and fitness level due to the specificity of the work. As the problem of obesity affects every fourth Pole, research in uniformed services seems to be essential from health and national security perspectives. The presented study aimed to determine the elements of nutritional status in 289 students of Polish police schools and police training centers. Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and bone calcification assessment was conducted by the DXA densitometric method. Based on BMI and body fat content, body weight disorders were found in 31.8% of all examined students. Densitometric test results showed changes in bone calcification of varying severity in 26.6% of the total number of respondents. The presence of obesity in students of police schools and training centers proves that the present nutrition model is energetically unbalanced, while the demonstrated disorders of bone calcification indicate an improper condition of mineral nutrition.
Effects of 6-Month Military Deployment on Physical Fitness, Body Composition, and Selected Health-Related Biomarkers

J Strength Cond Res 35(4): 1074-1081, 2021-The purpose was to study the effects of 6-month deployment to Afghanistan on physical performance, anthropometrical, and health-related biochemical parameters in soldiers with sedentary to light physical workload shifts. Twenty-five male soldiers (30 ± 4 years) volunteered and were measured before and after the 6-month deployment. Another 25 home-land-based male soldiers (30 ± 6 years) served as controls. Total body fat percentage decreased in deployed soldiers (Pre: 23.2 ± 5.3 vs. Post: 20.8 ± 5.5%, p < 0.05), whereas no change was observed in control (20.2 ± 6.9 vs. 20.5 ± 7.0%). Physical performance improved in deployed soldiers in 4 × 10-m shuttle run (10.86 ± 0.90 vs. 10.49 ± 0.63 seconds) and pull-up test to failure (4.7 ± 3.7 vs. 7.5 ± 6.7 rep.) (p < 0.05) but not in the controls for the respective tests (10.28 ± 0.74 vs. 10.40 ± 0.76 seconds and 10.2 ± 7.8 vs. 10.2 ± 7.5 rep.). Deployed soldiers also improved 5-km run with a simulated combat gear time (29.2 ± 3.1 vs. 27.4 ± 3.0 minutes), whereas in control the time increased (26.4 ± 2.9 vs. 27.8 ± 2.6 minutes, p < 0.05). Load at maximum power output in bench press was improved in deployed soldiers (51.6 ± 11.3 vs. 56.2 ± 12.6 kg, p < 0.05). Serum glucose and creatinine decreased (5.46 ± 0.53 vs. 4.87 ± 0.74 mmol·L-1 and 87.4 ± 10.7 vs. 80.9 ± 10.2 μmmol·L-1, respectively), and hemoglobin and hematocrite increased (15.13 ± 0.82 vs. 16.75 ± 0.85 g·dl-1 and 45.3 ± 1.5 vs. 48.1 ± 2.4%, respectively, p < 0.05) in the deployment group. In conclusion, after 6-month deployment consisting of sedentary and low physical occupational load, soldiers were able to increase their physical fitness and decrease their body fat content and improve selected health-related biochemical parameters. Therefore, the adoption and promotion of leisure-time physical activity in soldiers during deployments is essential to maintain combat readiness.
INFLUENCE OF THE SKELETAL MUSCLE MASS GROWTH ON IRON METABOLISM INDICATORS AMONG CONSCRIPTED SOLDIERS DURING THE PERIOD ADAPTATION TO THE SETTINGS OF MILITARY SERVICE

Abstract:Thousands of young men are conscripted for military service with various nutritional status and physical fitness condition every year. The adaptation of conscripted soldiers to the factors of military service occurs at three levels: physiological, psychological and social. The purpose of the study was to assess the dynamic changes of body structure parameters in conscripted soldiers during 6 months of service by conscription and to determine the effect of skeletal muscle mass growth on iron metabolism during adaptation to military service conditions. A prospective observational study involved 145 conscripted soldiers from one of the military units after informed consent. The study was performed from the moment of conscription for military service in 3 stages with an interval of 3 months using a four-component model of body structure and a four-component model of iron metabolism. The skeletal muscle mass and adipose tissue mass and were determined caliperometrically. Hematological and biochemical parameters of iron metabolism were assessed. Dynamic changes and types of growth of the skeletal muscle mass, as well as changes in the parameters of iron metabolism have been obtained. The body weight of conscripted soldiers changes slightly within 6 months from the moment of conscription. At the same time internal changes occurred in the structure of the body of conscripted soldiers due to an increase in skeletal muscle mass and a decrease in the mass of adipose tissues. The types of skeletal muscle mass growth were determined among conscripted soldiers. There were an increase in skeletal muscle mass and hemoglobin fund to provide them oxygen by the influence of increased physical loading. It led to a decrease in iron stores, estimated by serum ferritin, and signs became more pronounced of iron deficiency erythropoiesis, which were determined in erythrocyte indexes. These combined changes can be assessed as functional iron deficiency or iron deficiency without anemia.

ASSESSMENT OF THE FREQUENCY OF FOOD PRODUCTS CONSUMPTION AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS BY MILITARY AVIATION PERSONNEL DEPENDING ON THEIR NUTRITIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Abstract:Introduction: Nutritional behaviour is the result of many factors, one of which is nutritional knowledge. A higher level of nutritional knowledge promotes proper nutrition, which is the main factor influencing health, nutritional status and psychophysical efficiency. The aim of the study was to determine the customary frequency of consumption of selected food products and dietary supplements by Air Force soldiers depending on their level of nutritional knowledge. Methods: The study was carried out among 540 Air Force soldiers and 498 persons with complete data (32 women, 466 men; mean age 36.3±8.5 years) were included in the analysis. The FFQ food consumption frequency questionnaire was used to assess the frequency of food consumption. Nutrition knowledge was assessed on the basis of 32 statements on food and nutrition. Results: The level of nutritional knowledge depended significantly on the education and age of the respondents. In the group of the surveyed soldiers, military pilots showed the highest level of nutritional knowledge, while the lowest level was shown by engineering and aviation services. The frequency of consumption of milk and natural dairy drinks, curds, eggs, wholemeal bread, coarse groats, fruits, vegetables, oils, nuts, seeds, poultry meat, rabbit meat, honey, wine and drinks increased significantly with the increase in the level of nutritional knowledge, while the frequency of consumption of margarines in cubes, margarines in cups, animal fats and cured meats decreased. Dietary supplements such as vitamin, mineral and vitamin-mineral preparations were significantly more frequently consumed by soldiers with a higher level of nutritional knowledge. Conclusions: 1. On the basis of the assessment of the frequency of consumption of products, a number of abnormalities were found among the majority of the surveyed soldiers of military aviation personnel. 2. The results obtained confirm that a higher level of nutritional knowledge promotes healthy eating habits among the Air Force soldiers. Food education is essential, especially among soldiers in the older age group and ground flying personnel

Abstract:Executive functions (EFs) are related to human abilities that allow individuals to achieve planned goals, contribute to creativity and the analysis of new ideas, and allow for adaptation to new situations in daily life. Thorough analyses of the factors affecting EFs can aid in the development of appropriate training programs for various social and professional groups, including the military. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the EFs of cadets (18 women and 108 men) studying at a military academy in Poland after the first and second terms of military training, and to investigate gender differences in the level of EFs, shooting performance (SP), and components of physical fitness (PF). The Neuropsychological Color Trails Test (CTT-2) was used to determine some of the EFs of the test subjects. Meanwhile, the level of SP was represented by the score achieved during marksmanship training implemented during military training. Assessment of the subjects’ PF was guided by the principles of the Health-Related Fitness assessment concept, i.e., health-related fitness. Differences between men and women in specific variables were calculated using the Mann–Whitney U test for independent samples, whilst the relationship between variables was analyzed using the best subset regression method. The results revealed that cadets’ EFs were influenced by their SP and their level of strength. However, there were no significant differences between male and female cadets in the levels of EFs or SP.

Alternating Attention and Physical Fitness in Relation to the Level of Combat Training

Abstract:The level of combat training (CT) of the future commander-leader is of critical importance to the armed forces in national defense. This study aimed to search for the relationship between the level of alternating attention, physical fitness and shooting accuracy (SA), and academic achievements in practical military subjects (PMS). The study group consisted of 137 cadets of the Military University of Land Forces. The measure of alternating attention in the study was the Color Trails Test results. Motor components were assessed by measuring hand static strength, endurance run, and time of a speed and agility run. SA and PMS were taken as measures of cadets’ CT. Significantly higher PMS were associated with higher levels of strength and better endurance in cadets. The physical fitness of the cadets did not significantly affect the cadets’ SA. The main result of the study is the revelation of the level of alternating attention as a strong determinant of cadets’ SA. The authors suggest that the main emphasis should be put on the physical preparation of a modern soldier, focused on the development of strength and endurance skills. It is also reasonable to introduce cognitive stimulation exercises to shooting training.

Anabolic Adaptations Occur in Conscripts During Basic Military Training Despite High Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency and Decrease in Iron Status

Abstract:Introduction: In Estonian Defense Forces that are drawn up on the basis of the conscription model considerable numbers of young men are prematurely discharged from military service for medical reasons, but causes leading to premature dropout of conscripts have not been systematically studied. However, one of the factors involved could be relatively demanding physical training that starts at the beginning of military service in the form of basic military training (BMT). Cumulative training and nontraining stresses experienced by conscripts during BMT may exceed their physiological adaptability and increase the probability of becoming prematurely discharged. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to assess physiological responses to 10-week BMT in Estonian conscripts. Materials and methods: The protocol of the study confirmed to the standards set by the Declaration of Helsinki and it was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Tartu. Mean ± SD age and body mass index of 94 conscripts studied was 20.9 ± 1.7 years and 24.2 ± 3.0 kg · m-2, respectively. Fasting venous blood analysis was performed four times during BMT (October to December) and once 15 weeks after the end of BMT (in March). One-factor (time) repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate the differences within the variables. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Where a significant main effect was observed, Tukey's honesty significant difference post-hoc analysis was used to locate differences between the means. A Pearson product moment coefficient of correlation (r) with α level set at 0.05 was applied to determine the relationship between variables. Results: Significant increases in serum testosterone concentration (60.6%), testosterone to cortisol ratio (61.1%), blood erythrocyte count (4.3%), hemoglobin concentration (3.8%) and hematocrit (2.2%), and decrease in serum ferritin concentration (39.3%) occurred between weeks 1 and 10 during BMT (in all cases p < 0.0001). Fifteen weeks later, these parameters were still at increased or decreased levels, respectively, compared to week 1. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (serum 25(OH) D concentration <50 nmol · L-1) increased from 42.6% in week 1 to 80.8% in week 10 and to 91.5% 15 weeks later. Serum 25(OH)D levels did not correlate with testosterone concentrations (r = 0.062, p = 0.552 in Wk-1 and r = -0.079, p = 0.448 in Wk-25). Conclusion: These findings suggest that BMT induces anabolic physiological adaptations in conscripts despite vitamin D deficiency and decrease in iron status. However, high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and decline in iron status may limit physiological adaptations and improvement in physical work capacity to a suboptimal level. Furthermore, as vitamin D influences a variety of functions important for health, deficiency in conscripts should be considered a major concern that needs treatment. An acknowledged limitation of the study is the lack of a control group of conscripts possessing normal vitamin D status and stable serum ferritin levels throughout the study period. Nevertheless, the research design employed enabled to determine two factors that potentially limit physiological adaptability of conscripts to military training loads in ecologically authentic environment.
Sex differences in energy balance, body composition, and metabolic and endocrine markers during prolonged arduous military training

Abstract:This study investigated sex differences in energy balance, body composition, and metabolic and endocrine markers during prolonged military training. Twenty-three trainees (14 women) completed 44-weeks military training (three terms of 14 weeks with 2 weeks adventurous training). Dietary intake and total energy expenditure were measured over 10 days during each term by weighed food and doubly labelled water. Body composition was measured by DXA at baseline and the end of each term. Circulating metabolic and endocrine markers were measure at baseline and the end of terms 2 and 3. Absolute energy intake and total energy expenditure were higher, and energy balance was lower, for men than women (p ≤ 0.008). Absolute energy intake and balance were lower, and total energy expenditure was higher, during term 2 than terms 1 and 3 (p < 0.001). Lean mass did not change with training (p = 0.081). Fat mass and body fat increased from term 1 to terms 2 and 3 (p ≤ 0.045). Leptin increased from baseline to terms 2 and 3 in women (p ≤ 0.002) but not men (p ≥ 0.251). Testosterone and free androgen index increased from baseline to term 3 (p ≤ 0.018). Free T4 decreased and TSH increased from baseline to term 2 and term 3 (p ≤ 0.031). Cortisol decreased from baseline to term 3 (p = 0.030). IGF-I and total T3 did not change with training (p ≥ 0.148). Men experienced greater energy deficits than women during military training due to higher total energy expenditure.

Abstract:We assessed dietary intake and nitrogen balance during 14 weeks of Basic Training (BT) in British Army Infantry recruits. Nineteen men (mean ± SD: age 19.9 ± 2.6 years, height: 175.7 ± 6.5 cm, body mass 80.3 ± 10.1 kg) at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick (ITC(C)) volunteered. Nutrient intakes and 24-h urinary nitrogen balance were assessed in weeks 2, 6 and 11 of BT. Nutrient intake was assessed using researcher-led weighed food records and food diaries, and Nutritics professional dietary software. Data were compared between weeks using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with statistical significance set at p ≤ 0.05. There was a significant difference in protein intake (g) between weeks 2 and 11 of BT (115 ± 18 vs. 91 ± 20 g, p = 0.02, ES = 1.26). There was no significant difference in mean absolute daily energy (p = 0.44), fat (p = 0.79) or carbohydrate (CHO) intake (p = 0.06) between weeks. Nitrogen balance was maintained in weeks 2, 6 and 11, but declined throughout BT (2: 4.6 ± 4.1 g, 6: 1.6 ± 4.5 g, 11: −0.2 ± 5.5 g, p = 0.07). A protein intake of 1.5 g·kg−1·d−1 may be sufficient in the early stages of BT, but higher intakes may be individually needed later on in BT.

Abstract:With the beginning of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine need significant reforms and improvements both in technical rearmament and reorganization of the administrative structure in accordance with the requirements of professionalization and the transition of the Armed Forces to staffing on a voluntary basis [2, 3, 6]. The training of any serviceman cannot be complete if it is limited only to knowledge of the use of military equipment and weapons and the ability to use them. An integral condition for the successful completion of professional tasks is the ability of each serviceman to make the most of all the power of military equipment in the shortest possible time [1, 10]. An urgent issue is the improvement of programs for physical training of servicemen, which in the future will ensure the quality of tasks in accordance with the purpose and performance of tasks. Analysis and improvement of the level of dynamics of the general physical fitness of servicemen taking into account purposeful performance of tasks. The research has shown that, at all stages of the experiment, the level of general physical fitness of contract servicemen is worse than that of civilian youth cadets (t=2,25-2,66; р<0,05). It was revealed that in both groups the dynamics of indicators of general physical fitness is positive, but there is no significant difference, which indicates the lack of effectiveness of the current program of physical fitness, regardless of the category of cadets, effectiveness of the current program of physical fitness, or the category of cadets.
Changes in body composition during the macrocycle of professional football players in relation to sports nutrition knowledge

Abstract:Professional football players are obligated to meet the physical demands and maintain the best possible performance throughout the whole macrocycle. It is important to assess the players' nutrition knowledge, identify areas that require increased nutrition awareness and identify the impact of knowledge on changes in body composition as this can affect the players' health and performance. This study aimed to assess changes in body composition of professional football players during the macrocycle of the spring round of the football championship and to identify the correlation between nutrition knowledge and maintaining body composition. The study included 38 football players. The players' body compositions were analyzed 6 times during the macrocycle consisting of preparatory, competitive, and transition periods using the Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis method. Athletes completed the Nutrition for Sport Knowledge Questionnaire to assess their nutrition knowledge. During the preparatory period, a statistically significant negative correlation was demonstrated between the players' knowledge of the subsections of micronutrients in the diet and the dispersion of the adipose percentage tissue content (r=-0.36, p=0.03). In the competitive period, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between the players' knowledge of sports nutrition and the dispersion of lean body mass (r=-0.46, p=0.004), and skeletal muscle mass (r=-0.36, p=0.03). During the transition period, a statistically significant negative correlation between the players' knowledge of weight control and the dispersion of body mass (r=-0.47, p=0.00) and BMI values (r=-0.48, p=0.00) was identified. The player's knowledge of the subsection of macronutrients significantly negatively correlated with the dispersion of skeletal muscle mass content (r=-0.33, p=0.05). Nutrition knowledge has an impact on the stability of body composition during all analyzed periods: preparatory, competitive, and transition periods.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the study was to check the changes in the level of physical fitness and body composition after a directed training process in cadets-pilots, in relation to control group. Material and methods: The study involved 29 cadets studying at the Air Force Military Academy in Dęblin. Group A (study group)-second year pilots (n = 17), male, with an average age of 19.94 ± 1.3 years, studying to become an aircraft pilot, who realized 35-h directed training process based on the Aviation Synthetic Efficiency Test (ASET) and group B (control group)-second year in the field of ground navigation (n = 12), male, with an average age of 19.83 ± 1.27 years, completing the standard physical education process. In both groups, the fitness tests and physiological studies were conducted twice time: before starting the training process-study I; after the training process-study II. Fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), muscle mass (MM), total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW) were measurement with using the bioimpedance method with using body composition analyzer the AKERN 101 type BIA 101SE. Results: In group A in study II, fitness was at a good level, while in group B it was below the standard expected for pilots. There was statistically significant decrease in fat mass (FM) and increase in fat-free mass (FFM), muscle mass (MM), total body water (TBW) in group A compared to group B. In study II, group A showed no significant correlation between ASET and FM, FFM, MM, TBW while group B showed statistically significant correlations. Conclusions: The results obtained in study II showed an increase in directed physical fitness in groups A and B, as measured by ASET. In both groups A and B, the training process decreased FM and increased FFM, MM, and TBW, but a greater effect of these changes was observed in group A.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the physical fitness and training of Norwegian infantry soldiers during 10 months of compulsory military service.METHODS: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and maximal numbers of sit-ups, push-ups, and chin-ups and 3-km running time were tested in 107 male infantry soldiers at the beginning and end of basic training (BT), and again at demobilization. The amount of physical training was registered throughout the military service.RESULTS: During BT, major improvements in sit-ups and push-ups were found. VO2max increased in soldiers with the lowest initial VO2max, but decreased to pre-BT level at demobilization. The amount of obligatory physical training was 8.5 hours x week(-1) during BT and 35% lower after BT, and was usually performed in uniform at low to moderate intensity.CONCLUSION: The amount of high-intensity endurance and strength training during compulsory military service is to low to improve the soldiers' endurance and muscular strength.

Effect of Specific Short-Term Physical Training on Fitness Measures in Conditioned Men

Abstract:Physical training programs that enhance battlefield-related fitness needs have been increasingly advocated as operational demands on the US military have increased, but few studies have evaluated program effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to compare a novel 7-week physical training program with traditional army physical fitness training in improving the selected measures of physical fitness and military task performance. One hundred and eighty subjects performed a 30-m rush wearing a fighting load, a simulated casualty recovery wearing a fighting load, a 1-repetition maximum bench press, a maximum repetition pull-up test, a medicine ball put, a vertical jump, and a T-test agility drill to establish test-retest reliability and normative reference values. One hundred thirty-three subjects were assigned by block randomization to either traditional Army physical training (TT) of calisthenics and running or a novel program (NT) of calisthenics, resistance, aerobic, speed, power, and agility training. The results indicated that between-day reliability was high (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICCs] 3,1; 0.87-0.98) for all measures except for the casualty recovery (ICC 3,1; 0.67). Reliability improved for all the measures that were averaged over 3 trials (ICC 3,3; 0.93-0.95). The NT was superior to TT in improving bench press (8 vs. 3%; p < 0.01), medicine ball put (7 vs. 1%; p < 0.01), 30-m rush times (5 vs. 1%; p < 0.01), and casualty recovery times (17 vs. -15%; p < 0.01). These findings suggest that a short-term physical training program is effective in improving strength, power, and speed among previously conditioned men. Future studies should determine if similar training programs mitigate the injury risk in this population.

Abstract:The article examines the level of development of basic physical qualities (speed, strength, endurance) in cadets of higher military educational institutions before and after field trainings, depending on the year of study and duration of field trainings. Cadets (male) of the Military Institute of Tank Troops of the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" (n=327) of different years of studying took part in the research. The research was carried out in 2019-2021 during field trainings, which were carried out in the autumn and spring periods (September-October, April-May). Research methods: analysis and generalization of literary sources, pedagogical observation, testing, methods of mathematical statistics. The level of cadets’ physical fitness was determined by exercises that characterize the development of physical qualities: speed – 100 m running, strength – pull-ups on the crossbar, endurance – 3 km running. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the standards defined in the Provisional Guidelines for Physical Training in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was found that the level of development of all physical qualities of cadets of all years of studying deteriorates during field trainings. The worst level among physical qualities after the return of cadets from field trainings was recorded in the indicators of endurance development. At the same time, the longer the duration of the field trainings, the more the level of physical fitness of the cadets deteriorates. The most pronounced deterioration in the level of development of physical qualities was found in junior year cadets. The obtained results indicate the need to improve the organization and methodology of conducting physical training with cadets during field trainings, which will contribute to maintaining the level of their physical fitness at the appropriate level.
