Training General Aviation Pilots for Convective Weather Situations

Abstract:Background: Over the past 10-15 yr, considerable research has occurred for the development, testing, and fielding of real-time Datalink weather products for general aviation (GA) pilots to use before and during flight. As is the case with the implementation of most new technologies, work is needed to ensure that the users (in this case, the pilots) understand both the capabilities and limitations of the new technologies as well as how to use the new systems to improve their task performance. The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend a previous study on training pilots how and when to use these new weather technologies. Method: This field study used a quasi-experimental design (pre- vs. post-test with a control group). There were 91 GA pilots from the Midwest, Northeastern, and Southeastern United States who participated in a 2-h short course or a control activity. The lecture-based short course covered radar basics, Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD), NEXRAD specifics/limitations, thunderstorm basics, radar products, and decision making. Results: The pilots who participated in the course earned higher knowledge test scores, improved at applying the concepts in paper-based flight scenarios, had higher self-efficacy in post-training assessments as compared to pre-training assessments, and also performed better than did control subjects on post-test knowledge and skills assessments. Discussion: GA pilots lack knowledge about real-time Datalink weather technology. This study indicates that a relatively short training program was effective for fostering Datalink weather-related knowledge and skills in GA pilots.
Portable Weather Applications for General Aviation Pilots

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the potential benefits and impact on pilot behavior from the use of portable weather applications. Method: Seventy general aviation (GA) pilots participated in the study. Each pilot was randomly assigned to an experimental or a control group and flew a simulated single-engine GA aircraft, initially under visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The experimental group was equipped with a portable weather application during flight. We recorded measures for weather situation awareness (WSA), decision making, cognitive engagement, and distance from the aircraft to hazardous weather. Results: We found positive effects from the use of the portable weather application, with an increased WSA for the experimental group, which resulted in credibly larger route deviations and credibly greater distances to hazardous weather (≥30 dBZ cells) compared with the control group. Nevertheless, both groups flew less than 20 statute miles from hazardous weather cells, thus failing to follow current weather-avoidance guidelines. We also found a credibly higher cognitive engagement (prefrontal oxygenation levels) for the experimental group, possibly reflecting increased flight planning and decision making on the part of the pilots. Conclusion: Overall, the study outcome supports our hypothesis that portable weather displays can be used without degrading pilot performance on safety-related flight tasks, actions, and decisions as measured within the constraints of the present study. However, it also shows that an increased WSA does not automatically translate to enhanced flight behavior. Application: The study outcome contributes to our knowledge of the effect of portable weather applications on pilot behavior and decision making.
Predictive Weather Display in ATC: Implications for Research and Training

Abstract:Two systems are central to the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) air traffic management program - Traffic Management Advisor (TMA) and En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM). One purpose of both systems is to reduce air traffic control (ATC) delay. The present study reports on an exploratory integration of convective weather, a major source of delay, into the ATC systems to allow early re-route around weather in order to reduce delay. Pseudo-controllers ran a series of simulation-based scenarios with screen capture and video collection to assess delay and safety performance. Results provide evidence that delay was reduced by early rerouting in response to convective weather predictions. Implications for training and research are discussed.

Scan Tracking Coordinates for Improved Centering of Stratus OCT Scan Pattern

Abstract:ObjectiveTo describe and evaluate a technique to optimize scan centering during the Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT) image acquisition process using currently available scan tracking coordinates. DesignObservational clinical study. ParticipantsTwelve eyes of six normal subjects were examined using the Fast retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and the Fast Optic Disc acquisition protocols. MethodsAt visit 1, 3 consecutive measurements (trials) were taken by 2 different operators with the scan subjectively centered on the optic disc for the Fast RNFL thickness protocol and Fast Optic Disc protocol. At visit 2, 3 consecutive measurements were taken by positioning the scan using scan tracking coordinates. The scan coordinates were recorded twice by each operator and the limits of agreement and Bland-Altman plots were used to estimate agreement. The within subjects standard deviation (Sw) and the coefficient of variation (CV) were calculated for RNFL and optic disc parameters for each operator separately and differences by scan positioning method were evaluated using a 3-way (trial x operator x visit) analysis of variance for repeated measures. ResultsThe Sw and CV for the RNFL thickness parameters were generally higher when the scan was subjectively centered on the disc compared to when using the newly described coordinate system (eg, for operator 2, temporal sector Sw was 1.60±0.78 and 4.09±0.99 and CV was 2.2% and 5.7% with and without coordinate use, respectively). For the Fast RNFL protocol, the use of scan tracking coordinates resulted in significantly less variability than subjective placement of the scan circle using the landmark feature (currently recommended technique) in the temporal sectors only. No significant difference was found for any of the optic disc parameters. Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement within each operator for calculating scan coordinates suggesting this technique is reproducible. ConclusionsReproducibility of RNFL thickness measurements generally improves with the use of scan tracking coordinates, particularly in the temporal sector. However, small changes in the position of the scan do not significantly affect the reproducibility of optic disc parameters.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyze the use situation of finished resin teeth for the different location, and to provide reference for manufacturers of finished resin teeth and all the buyers. METHODS To analyze the use situation of finished resin teeth in the Dental Laboratory of the Affiliated Hospital of Stomatology of Chongqing Medical University from January 2006 to December 2008 by using statistic methods. RESULTS During the use of 55,787 finished resin teeth, the study found some rules. (1) The top use of finished resin teeth was D6 with the percentage of 5.31%, and the lowest use of finished resin teeth was D3 with the percentage of 1.94%. (2) Except the maxillary canines and the mandibular lateral incisors, there was no significant difference between the usage of other same name finished resin teeth (P > 0.05). (3) Among all finished resin teeth, the usage of section B exceeded section A, and the usage of maxillary finished resin teeth exceeded mandibular finished resin teeth (P < 0.05). (4) The use of the complete denture and single complete denture was about 1/3 of the total usage of finished resin teeth. (5) Except the use situation of complete denture and single complete denture, the frequency of simultaneously using mandibular left and right central incisors was the most with the percentage of 81.46%, for the frequency of simultaneously using maxillary left and right canines was 43.26% of the total, which was the lowest. CONCLUSION There is significant difference in the use frequency of finished resin teeth for different location. For such reason, the manufacturers should produce finished resin teeth pro rata as well as the buyers for their purchase.

Abstract:This paper examines opportunities and challenges of integrating augmented reality (AR) into education and investigates requirements to enable instructors to author AR educational experiences. Although AR technology is recognised for its potential in educational enhancement, it poses challenges for instructors creating AR-based experiences due to their limited digital skills and the complexity of 3D authoring tools. Semi-structured interviews with 17 aviation instructors identified current pedagogical approaches, gaps, and potential applications of AR in aviation weather education. Additionally, results highlighted the benefits of AR and obstacles to its integration into education, followed by outlining design priorities and user needs for educational AR authoring. For AR authoring toolkit development, this study recommended incorporating interactive AR lesson modules, early development of user requirements, and prebuilt AR modules. Findings will guide the development of a 3D authoring toolkit for non-technologist instructors, enabling wider AR use in aviation weather education and other educational fields. Research interviews with aviation instructors were conducted to derive design implications of AR authoring toolkits for non-technologist instructors. Key findings highlighted gaps in aviation weather education, potential AR applications, and barriers to AR in education. Design recommendations emphasised incorporating interactive AR lesson modules, initial user requirements, and prebuilt AR modules.

Abstract:Abstract. Responding to the call for reform in science education, changes were made in an introductory meteorology and climate course offered at a large public university. These changes were a part of a larger project aimed at deepening and extending a program of science content courses that model effective teaching strategies for prospective middle school science teachers. Therefore, revisions were made to address misconceptions about meteorological phenomena, foster deeper understanding of key concepts, encourage engagement with the text, and promote inquiry-based learning. Techniques introduced include: use of a flash cards, student reflection questionnaires, writing assignments, and interactive discussions on weather and forecast data using computer technology such as Integrated Data Viewer (IDV). The revision process is described in a case study format. Preliminary results (self-reflection by the instructor, surveys of student opinion, and measurements of student achievement), suggest student learning has been positively influenced. This study is supported by three grants: NSF grant No. 0202923, the Unidata Equipment Award, and the Lucia Harrison Endowment Fund.

Abstract:Objective: To assist stakeholders apply targeted safety strategies, we developed and tested a two-stage model of diversion knowledge and skills.Background: Understanding pilot factors in weather-related diversions is integral to reducing the phenomenon of visual flight rules flight into meteorological conditions.Method: Thirty-six general aviation pilots flew a cross-country flight in a Cessna 172 simulator where they encountered an ATC-directed diversion due to deteriorating weather. Path analyses quantified effects in a two-stage model based on criteria specified by aviation regulations.Results: In stage 1, low cognitive flexibility and fewer recent pilot-in-command hours were associated with greater likelihood of ignoring the diversion instruction. Low cognitive flexibility was also associated with errors in locating the alternate aerodrome and incorrect procedures at the alternate. At stage 2, there were significant positive paths from a diversion efficiency variable to all aspects of pilotage. Pilotage positively predicted awareness of ownship and traffic, and was associated with fewer altitude violations.Conclusion: We provide empirical evidence for the association between the cognitive factors related to continuation bias and high-risk responses to diversion instructions. Using a two-stage model to conceptualize pilot performance illuminates the impact of cognitive factors in weather-related diversions. Highlighting the pivotal human factors at two clear junctions of an unexpected diversion can more fully prepare pilots to safely manage these risk-laden events.
Runway Safety Training Methods for Runway Incursion Prevention

Abstract:The Federal Aviation Administration wants to educate pilots about Runway safety to prevent runway incursions. The number of runway incursions increased nearly 83% from 954 in 2011 to 1,744 by the end of 2017 (OIG, 2018). This experimental research project trained 20 pilots using three different methods of teaching (classroom, online, in a flight simulator) to determine which method most effectively taught pilots about a specific topic in aviation. The different training methods change the way the educational content is delivered and this change in delivery could impact how well the pilots learn the material (Cox, 2010). The participants were given a pretraining exam on runway safety to determine their initial knowledge level. Each pilot was assigned one training method and one week after training took a post-test examination. The classroom lecture was created by instructor Taylor, the simulator training regimen was created by the researcher, AOPA’s Runway Safety course was created by AOPA sponsored by the FAA (FAA (2), 2018 & AOPA, 2018). It was hypothesized that the simulator training would produce the best results as it is the combination of a situated and dynamic learning environment. The data was inconclusive as to which method trained pilots the most effectively. However, the data from the research did reveal that for the twenty participants, the simulator training did produce the highest average scores in this research. Flight time did not appear to be a factor affecting if the pilots increased their scores.

Abstract:Undesirable meteorological conditions are typical aviation flight safety threats. Although most meteorological radar and flight augmentation computers have avionic system wind shear alarms, the preferred approach is that pilots avoid unsafe wind shear events. Therefore, effective pilot competency evaluations are needed to assess pilots' abilities to deal with these events. This study developed a wind shear operation competency model that includes observable behavior indicators, sub-task decomposition, and competency check items. An adapted competency model and a quantitative data-driven competency evaluation criteria optimization method were then developed using three-dimensional competency feature modeling, after which wind shear simulation flight training data were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The competency assessment grades were significantly correlated with the results from experienced examiners with a 93.33% evaluation accuracy. The proposed quantitative data-driven competency assessment method can provide effective pilot competency assessments for a range of aviation meteorological threats.

Abstract:With the changing nature of modern warfare, warfighters have to equip with agile fighting skills and robust psychological qualities. Only by staying calm and being unruffled when facing complicated circumstances, can they give full play to the skills learned during training or save the plane in emergencies. This article is against such background to probe into the methods of flight training based on special flight environment. 10 participants were selected in this experiment. The FSX was used and a retired FT-6 was adapted as the cockpit, the training scheme had been set out. With respect to three certain special flight environments, tasks scenes had been selected from FSX. Meanwhile, the heart rate amplitude was recorded, and the scales of state anxiety conducted before and after training were investigated. By analyzing the 10 subjects' physiological and psychological data, the conclusions had been drawn as follows: (a) the effects of training reflected more on the relief of the psychological anxiety; (b) a decline in psychological levels of anxiety had more effect on task-performing efficiency; (c) in the special fight environment, a certain degree of physiological arousal combined with a decline of anxiety had made the participants complete the tasks more successfully.
Implementation of a climate decision support system in an undergraduate weather and climate classroom

Abstract:To improve climate education in an introductory weather and climate course, an active-learning lab was developed around a climate decision support system. The Climate Analysis and Visualization for the Assessment of Species Status (CAnVAS) tool allows individuals to view various climate variables and select a particular location and species to analyze. Undergraduate participants used CAnVAS to answer questions about the climate data they were plotting and completed a concept map about how endangered species will be impacted by climate change. A pre- and post-assessment was also given to participants, during three separate semesters, to measure knowledge changes that may have been affiliated with the CAnVAS intervention. When CAnVAS was implemented, increases in pre-to-post-assessment performance were measured (approximately 10% in Fall 2021, 7% in Fall 2022, and 6% in Fall 2023). The concept maps revealed that on average, participants drew approximately seven relevant lines and circles. This study demonstrated the efficacy of the CAnVAS tool through a pedagogical intervention deployed in an introductory weather and climate undergraduate classroom. The results contribute to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning literature by testing the efficacy of a decision support system within the classroom setting using the e-learning theoretical framework.

Abstract:Despite the regular efforts on the part of national regulators, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Air Transport Association (ICAO and IATA), as well as on the developers of aeronautical equipment, the vast majority of accidents and incidents continue to occur due to the human factor. With the course of time, aircraft design and reliability are steadily and significantly improving, nevertheless, the number of aviation accidents is happening more and more frequently, including accidents with serviceable aircraft. Considerable evidence is the fact that a Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) remains one of the most common causes of aviation accidents. This is specified by a wide variety of problems that require the search for complex, interconnected solutions. Among these issues it is necessary to highlight the increasing sophistication of the aircraft as a technical system, as well as practically unchanged for more than half a century approaches to pilots training for the type and maintaining their qualifications based on pre-defined scenarios taking into consideration the previous experience of aircraft operation. One of the possible ways out of the situation may be the introduction of so-called concept of personnel training relying on the evidence-based training analysis (EBT) based not on the pursue to memorize a certain list of exercises but to develop each particular pilot’s skills and competences that could help him cope with any unpredictable situation. The key feature of EBT lies in refocusing on the analysis of original causes of unsuccessful maneuvers (actions of the pilot) primarily in order to correct the wrong actions instead of repeatedly complying with the "correct sequence of actions". In this regard, the tools providing a continuous analysis of the pilot's actions to identify errors for the purpose of realigning (forming) the pilot's professional competencies in due time, are of paramount importance. The article describes the content of the methodology representing an ultimate goal to develop recommendations aimed at improving pilot’s expertise based on generalized and personalized models of the pilot, as well as solving the inverse problem of flight dynamics using a comparative assessment of a particular pilot piloting quality.
Reflections on a Large-Lecture, Introductory Meteorology Course: Goals, Assessment, and Opportunities for Improvement

Abstract:The Atmospheric Science program at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee regularly offers the general education course Survey of Meteorology, serving over 400 students each year. This article describes a systematic inquiry into the teaching and learning goals of the course and the adequacy of current methods used to assess student performance. Following a survey of the six faculty members with teaching responsibilities for the course, common student learning goals of meteorological content and the application of meteorological concepts to observations were identified. Student surveys, designed to assess both the extent to which these learning goals were being met as well as the depth of learning, were administered to 241 students during the 2005–06 academic year. Results indicate that 80% of students surveyed met the content learning goal, while the application learning goal was met by only 66% of students. A deeper level of application learning, involving pattern recognition and the separation of concepts into component parts, was achieved by only 45% of the students. A comparison of student survey results with course grade distributions indicates that current grading practices are adequate for assessing the content learning goal but are inadequate for assessing the application learning goal.

Improving pilots' tactical decisions in air combat training using the critical decision method

Abstract:In fighter pilot training, much of upgrade pilots' (UPs') learning takes place during mission debriefs. A debrief provides instructor pilots (IPs) the opportunity to correct situation awareness (SA) upon which the UPs base their tactical decisions. Unless the debrief is conducted with proper depth and breadth, the IPs' feedback on UPs' SA and tactical decision-making may be incomplete or false, resulting in poor, or even negative learning. In this study, a new debrief protocol based on the Critical Decision Method (CDM) is introduced. The protocol specifically addresses the SA of UPs. An evaluation was conducted to examine if a short CDM training programme to IPs would enhance their ability to provide performance feedback to UPs regarding their SA and tactical decision-making. The IPs were qualified flying instructors and the UPs were air force cadets completing their air combat training with BAe Hawk jet trainer aircraft. The impact of the training intervention was evaluated using Kirkpatrick's four-level model. The first three levels of evaluation (Reactions, Learning and Behaviour) focused on the IPs, whereas the fourth level (Results) focused on the UPs. The training intervention had a positive impact on the Reactions, Learning and debrief Behaviour of the IPs. In air combat training missions, the UPs whose debriefs were based on the CDM protocol, had superior SA and overall performance compared to a control group.

Abstract:In air traffic management (ATM) all necessary operations (tactical planing, sector configuration, required staffing, runway configuration, routing of approaching aircrafts) rely on accurate measurements and predictions of the current weather situation. An essential basis of information is delivered by weather radar images (WXR), which, unfortunately, exhibit a vast amount of disturbances. Thus, the improvement of these datasets is the key factor for more accurate predictions of weather phenomena and weather conditions. Image processing methods based on texture analysis and geometric operators allow to identify regions including artefacts as well as zones of missing information. Correction of these zones is implemented by exploiting multi-spectral satellite data (Meteosat Second Generation). Results prove that the proposed system for artefact detection and data correction significantly improves the quality of WXR data and, thus, enables more reliable weather now- and forecast leading to increased ATM safety.

Shootout-89: A Comparative Evaluation of Knowledge-based Systems that Forecast Severe Weather

Abstract:During the summer of 1989, the Forecast Systems Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored an evaluation of artificial intelligence-based systems that forecast severe convective storms. The evaluation experiment, called Shootout-89, took place in Boulder, and focussed on storms over the northeastern Colorado foothills and plains (Moninger, et al., 1990). Six systems participated in Shootout-89. These included traditional expert systems, an analogy-based system, and a system developed using methods from the cognitive science/judgment analysis tradition. Each day of the exercise, the systems generated 2 to 9 hour forecasts of the probabilities of occurrence of: non significant weather, significant weather, and severe weather, in each of four regions in northeastern Colorado. A verification coordinator working at the Denver Weather Service Forecast Office gathered ground-truth data from a network of observers. Systems were evaluated on the basis of several measures of forecast skill, and on other metrics such as timeliness, ease of learning, and ease of use. Systems were generally easy to operate, however the various systems required substantially different levels of meteorological expertise on the part of their users--reflecting the various operational environments for which the systems had been designed. Systems varied in their statistical behavior, but on this difficult forecast problem, the systems generally showed a skill approximately equal to that of persistence forecasts and climatological (historical frequency) forecasts. The two systems that appeared best able to discriminate significant from non significant weather events were traditional expert systems. Both of these systems required the operator to make relatively sophisticated meteorological judgments. We are unable, based on only one summer's worth of data, to determine the extent to which the greater skill of the two systems was due to the content of their knowledge bases, or to the subjective judgments of the operator. Use of flight tracking data to inform safety deficiencies for general aviation cross-country operations in challenging flying environments

Abstract:Background: Air carriers, but not general aviation, have long employed in-flight data to identify risks/implement corrective measures for improved safety. Herein, using in-flight data, aircraft (in non-instrument-rated private pilots (PPLs) ownership) operations in two potentially hazardous environments (mountains, degraded visibility) were researched for safety practice deficiencies. Four questions were posed, the first two related to mountainous terrain operations: were aircraft (a) flown with hazardous ridge-level winds, (b) within gliding distance of level terrain? Regarding degraded visibility, did aviators (c) depart with low cloud ceilings (≤3,000 ft.), (d) fly at night away from urban lighting? Methods: The study cohort comprised: (a) single engine aircraft in sole PPL proprietorship (b) registered in Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B-Out) equipage-required locations prone to low cloud ceilings in three mountainous states. ADS-B-Out data for cross-country flights (>200 nm) were collected. Results: 250 flights (50 airplanes) were tracked (spring/summer 2021). For aircraft transiting areas subject to mountain winds influences, 65% completed one/multiple flights with potentially hazardous ridge-level winds. Two thirds of airplanes traversing mountainous topography would have, for at least one flight, been unable to glide to level terrain with a powerplant failure. Encouragingly, flight departures for 82% of the aircraft were with >3,000 ft. cloud ceilings. Likewise, flights for >86% of the study cohort were undertaken during daylight. Employing a risk scale, operations for 68% of the study cohort did not exceed low-risk (i.e., ≤1 unsafe practice) and high-risk flight(s) (three concurrent unsafe practices) were rare (4% of airplanes). In log-linear analysis, no interactions were evident between the four unsafe practices (p = 0.602). Discussion: Hazardous winds and inadequate engine failure planning were identified as safety deficiencies for general aviation mountain operations. Practical application: This study advocates for the expanded use of ADS-B-Out in-flight data to inform safety deficiencies/implement corrective measures toward improving general aviation safety.
