Abstract:The northeastern Arabian Sea (NEAS) experiences convective mixing during winter, but this mixing does not reach up to the silicicline, resulting in the limited supply of silicate (Si) compared to nitrate (N) and phosphate (P) to the mixed layer (ML) and formation of non-diatom blooms. The poleward advection of waters of low surface salinity by the West India Coastal Current (WICC) to the NEAS weakens the vertical mixing and reduces the Si input to the mixed layer, resulting in occurrence of Noctiluca scintillans blooms. The saturation of dissolved oxygen in the NEAS varied between 88 and 98%, suggesting N. scintillans blooms occur in oxic conditions. Enhanced cell abundance of N. scintillans was observed in the bloom region in the upper 10 m. Phytoplankton pigments data revealed higher contribution of Chlorophytes, Prasinophytes, Prymnesiophytes and Prochlorophytes in the bloom than non-bloom region. The isotopic composition of nitrogen and carbon of particulate organic matter indicated that natural and in situ processes contributed to both nutrients and organic carbon pool in the NEAS in supporting the massive occurrence of N. scintillans blooms than hitherto hypothesized to anthropogenic sources. This study further suggests that the effect of anthropogenic pollutants released into the NEAS from the mega-cities is limited to the neighbourhood of these cities and does not affect the open ocean.
Nutrient Accumulations in High-Saline Bottom Waters in the Eutrophic East China Sea Inner Shelf

Abstract:Despite decades of mitigation efforts, eutrophication-induced algal blooms and hypoxia have not significantly decreased globally, possibly due to the legacy effects of eutrophication. The legacy effect has been more explored in inland waters and enclosed estuaries than in open coastal waters. Here, we reanalyzed cruise data from the East China Sea inner shelf to explore the effect of eutrophication on nutrient accumulations in high-saline bottom waters. Our dataset showed elevated nitrate (12.75 +/- 6.51 mu mol L-1) and phosphate (0.85 +/- 0.26 mu mol L-1) in high-salinity (salinity>34, temperature < 23 degrees C) bottom waters during the summer of 2006 to 2013. They were higher than those typically observed in the Taiwan Warm Current Bottom Water by approximately 5.45 +/- 6.51, and 0.29 +/- 0.26 mu mol L-1, respectively. Significant correlations of nitrate with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and elevated AOU suggested that organic matter decomposition contributed to increased nitrate in bottom waters under eutrophication conditions. Based on an end-member mixing estimation, we found that the organic matter decomposition accounted for 28% to 37% of the nutrient concentrations in the bottom waters, with a standard deviation of 20%. Results from our mass-balance model indicated that 40-74% of regenerated nutrients are flushed out of the model box set within 95% equilibrium time due to the advection of offshore waters, assuming a residence time of 46.0 to 13.9 days. Based on cruise results in June and August 2009, the net accumulation rates of nitrate, phosphate, and AOU in the Taiwan Warm Current Bottom Water were estimated to be 0.046, 0.0036, and 0.44 mu mol L-1 d(-1), respectively. Such nutrient accumulations in the water column and the residual nutrients in sediment are crucial legacy nutrients, potentially triggering algal blooms. Conversely, the flushing effect suggests a significant transport of nutrients and other chemical elements to the offshore and open ocean.

Abstract:Northern Arabian Sea is considered as an ecologically sensitive area as it experiences a massive upwelling and long-lasting algal bloom, Noctiluca scintillans (green tide) during summer and spring-winter, respectively. Diatom bloom is also found to be co-located with N. scintillans and both have an impact on ecology of the basin. In-house technique of detecting species of these blooms from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Aqua data was used to generate a time-series of images revealing their spatial distribution. A study of spatial-temporal variability of these blooms using satellite data expressed a cyclic pattern of their spread over a period of 13 years. An average distribution of the blooms for January-March period revealed a peak in 2015 and minimum in 2013. Subsequently, a time-series of phytoplankton species images were generated for these 2 years to study their inter-annual variability and the associated factors. Species images during active phase of the bloom (February) in 2015 indicated development of N. scintillans and diatom in the central Arabian Sea also, up to 12° N. This observation was substantiated with relevant oceanic parameters measured from the ship as well as satellite data and the same is highlight of the paper. While oxygen depletion and release of ammonia associated with N. scintillans are detrimental for waters on the western side; it is relatively less extreme and supports the entire food chain on the eastern side. In view of these contrasting eco-sensitive events, it is a matter of concern to identify biologically active persistent areas, hot spots, in order to study their ecology in detail. An ecological index, persistence of the bloom, was derived from the time-series of species images and it is another highlight of our study.

Abstract:The Arabian Sea is prone to large-scale algal blooms during winter monsoon annually. However, it is unclear why dinoflagellate, especially Noctiluca scintillans, replaced diatoms as the main bloom species. Based on in situ, remote sensing and numerical-model data off Pakistan, we found a stratified water with less salty, suitable temperature (~24 °C) and low-light conditions at the subsurface, as well as the organic nutrient accumulation and silicate limitation, were crucial for the growth of N. scintillans and outcompeting diatoms. The superposition of cyclonic eddy promoted N. scintillans pumping to surface and forming large-scale bloom. Subsequently, the shading effect of surface bloom caused the disappearance of subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer. This result suggests that the combined effects of nutrient structure and hydrodynamics play an important role in the prevalence of N. scintillans.

Abstract:In the last decade, green Noctiluca scintillans with its symbiont and other dinoflagellates such as Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Prorocentrum micans and Scrippsiella trochoidea have become the dominant HABs, partially replacing the previously dominant diatoms and red Noctiluca scintillans, especially during the northeast monsoon. Fish kills in the Sea of Oman are linked to a slow seasonal decline in oxygen concentration from January to November, probably due to the decomposition of a series of algal blooms and the deep, low oxygen waters periodically impinging the Omani shelf. In the western Arabian Sea, cyclonic eddies upwell low oxygen, nutrient-rich water and the subsequent algal bloom decays and lowers the oxygen further and leads to fish kills. Warming of the surface waters by 1.2°C over the last 5 decades has increased stratification and resulted in a shoaling of the oxycline. This has increased the probability and frequency of upwelling low oxygen water and subsequent fish kills.

Abstract:The mixoplankton green Noctiluca scintillans (gNoctiluca) is known to form extensive green tides in tropical coastal ecosystems prone to eutrophication. In the Arabian Sea, their recent appearance and annual recurrence have upended an ecosystem that was once exclusively dominated by diatoms. Despite evidence of strong links to eutrophication, hypoxia and warming, the mechanisms underlying outbreaks of this mixoplanktonic dinoflagellate remain uncertain. Here we have used eco-physiological measurements and transcriptomic profiling to ascribe gNoctiluca's explosive growth during bloom formation to the form of sexual reproduction that produces numerous gametes. Rapid growth of gNoctiluca coincided with active ammonium and phosphate release from gNoctiluca cells, which exhibited high transcriptional activity of phagocytosis and metabolism generating ammonium. This grazing-driven nutrient flow ostensibly promotes the growth of phytoplankton as prey and offers positive support successively for bloom formation and maintenance. We also provide the first evidence that the host gNoctiluca cell could be manipulating growth of its endosymbiont population in order to exploit their photosynthetic products and meet critical energy needs. These findings illuminate gNoctiluca's little known nutritional and reproductive strategies that facilitate its ability to form intense and expansive gNoctiluca blooms to the detriment of regional water, food and the socio-economic security in several tropical countries.
Response of phytoplankton community and size classes to green Noctiluca bloom in the northern Arabian Sea

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis on the phytoplankton ecology with special reference to different phytoplankton size classes was carried out at green Noctiluca scintillans (hereafter Noctiluca) bloom and non-bloom locations in offshore waters of the northern Arabian Sea. At the bloom locations, green Noctiluca represented a dense mono-specific proliferation with average cell density of 10.16 ± 5.806 × 104 cells-L-1 and relative abundance share of 98.63%. Active photosynthesis through prasinophytic endosymbiont was depicted from net community production magnitude reaching 85.26 mgC/m3/Day under low prey abundance. Parallel swarming of Porpita porpita, a voracious copepod feeder signified the competitive advantage of Noctiluca to have the phytoplankton prey. Average concentration of picophytoplankton biomass was eleven times lower in surface waters of non-bloom stations in comparison to bloom. Higher N:P ratio in subsurface waters of non-bloom stations signified non-utilization of nitrogenous nutrients. Green Noctiluca bloom onset subsequent to diatom rich conditions was evident from spatio-temporal ocean colour satellite imageries.

Abstract:Seasonal variability is one of the most powerful components in multiple scale variations of plankton communities. A comparison of the seasonal blooms of Noctiluca scintillans in individual basins is combined with a statistical analysis of the relationships between this species and environmental forcing factors. Seasonal patterns of Noctiluca scintillans abundance throughout the Bay of Biscay, the North Sea, the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Sea of Marmara, the Adriatic Sea, the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, the eastern Australian shelf and the Japanese shelf pointed to the persistence of unimodal and bimodal algal blooms, of which unimodal are most common. In general, the duration of the monsoon-induced blooms exceeds that of the temperate regions. A Principal Component Analysis of blooms and environmental characteristics over regions indicated maximal magnitudes of Noctiluca blooms occurring at a medium kinetic energy of mesoscale eddies (from 0.06 to 0.12 m2 s−2), medium-to-high total concentration of nutrients (from 3 to <math>30μm</math>ol), and high wind stress (from 0.04 to 0.07 N m−2).

Abstract:To assess the spatiotemporal evolution of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans in the North Sea, the Helgoland Roads time series and Continuous Plankton Recorder survey were analysed using generalized additive models. Over the last decades, blooms of N. scintillans have occurred more frequently and intensively in many regions. This harmful algal bloom forming species can alter food webs, reduce ecosystem productivity, and lead to economic losses while causing lower aquacultural yields. After the 1990s, N. scintillans abundances have significantly increased by 1.65-fold and a significant prolongation of the bloom window was found (from 27.5 to 98 days in recent decades) off the island of Helgoland, Germany. Significant correlations were found between bloom initiation and nutrients, as well as light availability since these factors lead to increased prey availability. Highest abundances of N. scintillans were associated with water temperatures around 17 °C and wind speed below 6 ms-1 causing dense surface accumulations. Solar radiation of more than 200 Wm-2 was identified as a main driver for post-bloom conditions as it can deteriorate the cells and lead to the decline of N. scintillans abundances. In the southern North Sea, N. scintillans occurrences have intensified and spread since the 1980s with hotspots identified as the coastal waters adjacent to the estuaries of the Elbe and Rhine rivers.

Abstract:The dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans is often reported as a worldwide HAB species and caused severe financial losses to local aquaculture. In this review, we summarized the temporal and geographical distribution of its HABs in China, as well as its position in the plankton structure. Increasing N. scintillans HABs, both frequency and coverage, have broken out in almost all Chinese coastal regions mainly from April to June, with short-term and small coverage blooms as the primary type. The HAB period seems to shift with age and latitude. Recently, increasing abundance and dominance of N. scintillans were also reported in plankton communities in Chinese coastal waters, with multiple environmental factors related. In particular, trophic relationships may play an important role in its dominance and outbreaks of HABs. However, how N. scintillans became a dominant species in China and the mechanisms responsible for its HABs require further study.

Abstract:A time series field survey were conducted in Port Shelter, a subtropical coastal water in NW Pacific, beginning before the onset of a chain of Noctiluca scintillans and/or Mesodinium rubrum blooms, and ending after the blooms had declined. At the first mixed bloom stage, seed of N. scintillans and the consequent outbreak of both N. scintillans and M. rubrum were largely due to the physical forcing. Plenty food supply and their different feeding habits supported N. scintillans and M. rubrum to bloom massively and concomitantly. Following that, there was a small N. scintillans bloom followed by a small crest of M. rubrum. Their initiation and scale were mainly affected by limited food supply and/or the inferior food source. Sudden change of wind from mild northeast wind to strong southeast wind might contribute to the termination of N. scintillans bloom. Finally, physical accumulation was the most important driving factors of the formation and dispersal of the third and largest bloom of N. scintillans. Formation of these bloom events may involve vertical migration and/or the concentrating mechanism of M. rubrum and N. scintillans. Meanwhile, biotic interactions such as mutual supportive relationship between N. scintillans and M. rubrum, and O. hongkongense fed on the progametes of N. scintillans, as well as other abiotic factors like seawater temperature and rainfall, also play important roles in this series of bloom events. Our findings have important implications for coastal zones worldwide, which are affected recurrently by these two ubiquitous red tide-forming species.

Abstract:The south-western coast of India recently witnessed an intense bloom of green Noctiluca scintillans (NS) that resulted in water discolouration, scummy surface layer, bioluminescent tides, and mass fish mortality. The Algal Bloom Information Service (ABIS) of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services could efficiently provide information on the spatial extent of the bloom from its occurrence to disintegration. The initiation of the bloom was evidenced on 30 November, attained its peak on 12 December, and waned on 21 December 2021 with chlorophyll- a concentrations of 5.42, 3.01, and 0.33 mg m −3 , respectively, and with NS spread area of 3888, 10,608, and 48 Sq Km, respectively. Based on the information generated from ABIS, this manuscript addresses the ecosystem-disrupting algal bloom event and reiterates the need for autonomous coastal water quality observatories as a suitable alternative to field measurements to trace out the underlying factors responsible for the blooms and resultant harmful impacts on the ecosystem.

Culturable Bacterial Flora Associated with the Dinoflagellate Green Noctiluca miliaris During Active and Declining Bloom Phases in the Northern Arabian Sea

Abstract:A massive algal bloom of the dinoflagellate Noctiluca miliaris (green) was located in the Northern Arabian Sea by IRS-P4-2 (OCM-II) for microbiological studies, during two consecutive cruises of February-March 2009. Culturable bacterial load during bloom were ∼2–3-fold higher in comparison to non-bloom waters and ranged from 3.20 × 105 to 6.84 × 105 cfu ml−1. An analysis of the dominant heterotrophs associated with Noctiluca bloom resulted in phylogenetic and a detailed metabolic characterization of 70 bacterial isolates from an overlapping active and declining bloom phase location near north-central Arabian Sea. The active phase flora was dominated by Gram-positive forms (70.59 %), a majority of which belonged to Bacillus (35.29 %) of Firmicutes. As the bloom declined, Gram-negative forms (61.11 %) emerged dominant, and these belonged to a diverse γ-proteobacterial population consisting of Shewanella (16.67 %) and equal fractions of a Cobetia–Pseudomonas-Psychrobacter–Halomonas population (36.11 %). A Unifrac-based principal coordinate analysis of partial 16S rDNA sequences showed significant differences among the active and declining phase flora and also with reported endocytic flora of Noctiluca (red). A nonparametric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) of antibiogram helped differentiation among closely related strains. The organic matter synthesized by N. miliaris appears to be quickly utilized and remineralized as seen from the high efficiency of isolates to metabolize various complex and simple C/N substrates such as carbohydrates, proteins/amino acids, lipids, sulfide production from organic matter, and solubilize phosphates. The ability of a large fraction of these strains (50–41.67 %) to further aerobically denitrify indicates their potential for nitrogen removal from these high-organic microniches of the Noctiluca bloom in the Arabian Sea, also known for high denitrification activity. The results indicate that culturable euphotic bacterial associates of Noctiluca are likely to play a critical role in the biogeochemical ramifications of these unique seasonally emerging tropical open-water blooms of the Northern Arabian Sea.

The dynamics of red Noctiluca scintillans in the coastal aquaculture areas of Southeast China

Abstract:Noctiluca scintillans (NS) adds an aesthetic appeal to many coastal areas because of their bioluminescence. An intense bloom of the red NS frequently occurs in the coastal aquaculture region of Pingtan Island in Southeastern China. However, when NS exceeds in abundance, it causes hypoxia which has devastating impacts on the aquaculture. This study was conducted in the Southeastern part of China with an aim to examine the relationship between the profusion of NS and its impacts on marine environment. Samples from four stations on Pingtan Island were collected for 12 months (January to December 2018) and were later analyzed in laboratory against five parameters, namely temperature, salinity, wind speed, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a. Results showed that the NS blooms were particularly active during the months of May and June in the Pingtan Island area. The seawater temperatures during that time were recorded between 20 and 28.8 °C indicating the optimum survival temperature for NS. The NS bloom activity ceased above 28.8 °C. A principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the richness of NS was positively associated with temperature and salinity, whereas there was a significant reverse correlation between NS accumulation and wind speed. NS is a heterotrophic dinoflagellate and relies on the predation of algae for reproduction; therefore, a significant correlation was observed between NS abundance and chlorophyll a concentration, and an inverse correlation was observed between NS and phytoplankton abundance. Additionally, red NS growth was observed immediately following the diatom bloom, suggesting that phytoplankton, temperature, and salinity are the essential factors in the evolution, progression, and termination of NS growth.

Abstract:Noctiluca scintillans (red) is a widely distributed heterotrophic dinoflagellate and a prominent red tide forming species. This study investigated the effects of Noctiluca blooms on marine microbial diversity and functionality using multi-omics approaches. Our findings revealed significant differences in the community composition of Noctiluca -associated bacteria compared to those associated with autotrophic plankton and free-living bacteria in the surrounding seawater. The dominant bacterial groups within the Noctiluca -associated community shifted at various bloom stages, which could be attributed to changes in prey composition of Noctiluca . During the non-bloom stage, Burkholderiaceae, Carnobacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae dominated the community, while Vibrionaceae became dominant during the bloom stage, and Saprospiraceae, Crocinitomicaceae, and Pirellulaceae thrived during the post-bloom stage. Compared to the non-bloom stage, Noctiluca -associated bacterial community at the bloom stage exhibited significant down-regulation of genes related to complex carbohydrate metabolism, while up-regulation of genes related to glucose transportation and utilization. Furthermore, we identified Vibrio anguillarum , a potential pathogenic bacterium to marine fish, as a major component of the Vibrionaceae family during the bloom stage. The occurrence of V. anguillarum associated with Noctiluca blooms may be attributed to the increased availability of its preferred carbon sources and its high capabilities in glucose transportation, motility and chemotaxis. Moreover, the presence of Vibrio infection genes ( hap, hlyA, rtxA ) encoding vibriolysin, hemolysin, and RTX (Repeats-in-toxin) toxin in the V. anguillarum genome, with the hap gene showing high expression levels during Noctiluca blooms, indicates an elevated risk of infection. This study underscores the unique composition of the bacterial community associated with red tide forming heterotrophic dinoflagellates and suggests that Noctiluca cells may serve as reservoirs and vectors for pathogenic bacteria, potentially posing a threat to fish-farming and the health of other marine organisms.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, natural and anthropogenic pressures caused an apparent increase in the frequency and spread of red Noctiluca scintillans (RNS) blooms. Here, we describe this potential expansion and the associated environmental factors based on an extensive literature review (1857–2023). Our analysis suggests that Noctiluca increased over time in several Australian, Chinese and European coastal regions. We point to eutrophication, ocean warming and deoxygenation as possible drivers of these intensifications. Moreover, we demonstrate Noctiluca’s importance for coastal ecosystems: with competitive advantages causing fast and intense blooms, Noctiluca has the potential to alter plankton communities, influencing productivity in affected areas. Throughout our analysis, we identified major knowledge gaps that are relevant to assess Noctiluca: (i) challenges in determining its spatiotemporal evolution; (ii) limited knowledge about drivers triggering and ending blooms; (iii) scarce information about feeding, reproduction and interaction in situ and (iv) uncertainty regarding its contribution to carbon export. We hypothesize that these gaps are related to limitations in traditional sampling techniques, and we highlight the need for a holistic approach combining traditional with novel techniques like remote sensing and underwater cameras. Our suggested approach could help filling the identified gaps and facilitate predictions of bloom dynamics and impacts under future climate conditions.

Abstract:Climate driven changes and anthropogenic pressures on the marine environment have been shown to favor the increase in certain potentially harmful species. Among them, Noctiluca scintillans , a common dinoflagellate, often blooms during warm summers and is known to affect plankton communities. In this study, we assessed the dynamics in abundance and cell size of N. scintillans as well as the relationship between N. scintillans and small soft-bodied zooplankton in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS), since negative correlations between these plankton groups have been previously reported for nearby regions. This study is the first to present consistently counted N. scintillans cell numbers and measured cell lengths, through the analysis of ZooScan images from samples taken monthly at stations throughout the coastal zone of the BPNS. The results show that N. scintillans demonstrated clear seasonal dynamics with both high densities and large cell sizes in spring/summer (May-July). The occurrence of N. scintillans in the analyzed plankton samples and the abundance of N. scintillans at the observed peak intensities nearly tripled over a period of 5 years. A zero-inflated model showed a correlation of N. scintillans abundance with temperature as well as with phosphate concentrations, suggesting that anthropogenic influences such as climate change and riverine nutrient inputs could affect the temporal dynamics of the species. The results, on the other hand, did not show any negative impact of N. scintillans on the soft-bodied plankton community.

Abstract:According to the bulletins regularly issued by governments and published papers, this study summarized the records of Noctiluca scintillans blooms and related environmental variables in Chinese coastal waters from 1933 to 2020, analyzed the long‐term trends, spatial distribution, and seasonal variation of N. scintillans blooms, and discussed the impacts of environmental factors including hydrological environments, climate change, and eutrophication on N. scintillans blooms. Noctiluca scintillans is one of the most common harmful algal species and widely known due to its bioluminescence. In this study, the spatial distribution, seasonal variations, and long‐term trends of N. scintillans blooms in China and the related drivers were analyzed and discussed. From 1933 to 2020, a total of 265 events of N. scintillans blooms were recorded in Chinese coastal waters, with a total duration of 1052 days. The first N. scintillans bloom occurred in Zhejiang in 1933, and only three events were recorded before 1980. From 1981 to 2020, N. scintillans caused harmful algal blooms (HABs) almost every year, both the average duration and the proportion of multiphase HABs showed an increasing trend. 1986–1992, 2002–2004, and 2009–2016 were the three peak periods with a frequency of no less than five events of N. scintillans blooms per year. In terms of spatial distribution, N. scintillans blooms spread from the Southeast China Sea to the Bohai Sea after 2000, Guangdong, Fujian, and Hebei were the three provinces with the highest numbers of recorded events of N. scintillans blooms. Moreover, 86.8% of the events of N. scintillans blooms occurred in spring (March, April, and May) and summer (June, July, and August). Among environmental factors, the dissolved inorganic phosphate, dissolved silicate and chemical oxygen demand were significantly correlated with the cell density of N. scintillans during N. scintillans blooms, and most of N. scintillans blooms were recorded in the temperature range of 18.0–25.0°C. Precipitation, hydrodynamics, water temperature, and food availability might be the main factors affecting the spatial–temporal distribution of N. scintillans blooms along the Chinese coast.

Abstract:Abstract Occurrence of phytoplankton bloom in the northern Arabian Sea (NAS) during the winter monsoon is perplexing. The convective mixing leads to a deeper and well-oxygenated (> 95% saturation) mixed layer. We encountered low chlorophyll conditions though the nutrient conditions were favorable for a bloom. The mean ratio of silicate (Si) to DIN (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen: nitrate + nitrite + ammonium) in the euphotic zone was 0.52 indicating a “silicate-stressed” condition for the proliferation of diatoms. Also, the euphotic depth was much shallower (~ 49 m) than the mixed layer (~ 110 m) suggesting the Sverdrup critical depth limitation in the NAS. We show that the bloom in this region initiates only when the mixed layer shoals towards the euphotic zone. Our observations further suggest that two primary factors, the stoichiometric ratio of nutrients, especially the Si/DIN ratio, in the mixed layer and re-stratification of the upper water column, govern the phytoplankton blooming in NAS during the later winter monsoon. The important finding of the present study is that the Sverdrup’s critical depth limitation gives rise to the observed low chl- a concentration in the NAS, despite having enough nutrients.
