Abstract:With comparison of a traditional landfill, a joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate to landfills with or without a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment was investigated in this study. The results showed that the joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment could not only utilize the microaerobic reactor to buffer the fluctuation of quality and quantity of leachate during landfill stabilization, but also reduce the inhibitory effect of acidic pH and high concentrations of ammonium in recycled liquid on microorganisms and accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste. After 390 days of operation, the discharge of COD and total nitrogen (TN) from the landfill with leachate pretreatment by a microaerobic reactor was 7.4 and 0.9 g, respectively, which accounted for 0.7% and 2.6% of COD, 1.9% and 7.5% of the TN discharge from the landfills without recirculation and directly recirculated with leachate and concentrated leachate, respectively. The degradation of the organic matter and biodegradable matter (BDM) in the landfill reactors could fit well with the first-order kinetics. The highest degradation of the organic matter and BDM was observed in the joint recirculation system with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment with the degradation constant of the first-order kinetics of 0.001 and 0.002.
Effect of Inoculation with Effective Microorganisms and Leachate Recycle on Degradation of Municipal Refuse

Abstract:Biodegradation of waste in landfill is a slow process requiring decades for completion. Accelerated degradation of municipal refuse in modulated landfill environments may alleviate or eliminate pollution to the land, water and air. In this work, nineteen effective microorganisms (EMs) were isolated from old landfill refuse by enrichment culturing techniques and used for the inoculum of municipal refuse. The preliminary experiments demonstrate that a combination of EMs inoculation in landfill with leachate recycle resulted in increased rates of decomposition and faster process stability. The concentrations of COD, VFA and SO42- in digester with EMs inoculation and leachate recycle decreased more rapidly than others. Gas production from digester with EMs inoculation and leachate recycle commenced around 32 days, which is a week shorter than with leachate recycle only. And peak cumulative gas production was obtained much earlier in digester with EMs inoculation and leachate recycle (150 days) compared to 180 days with leachate recycle only. Moreover, in the first two months, the rate of settlement in digester with EMs inoculation and leachate recycle was more rapid than others.
[Performance of Leachate Nitrogen Removal in Bioreactor Landfill System].

Abstract:Utilizing the unique vertical aerobic-anoxic-anerobic ecological enviornment of landfills and adopting intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse, this paper studied the performance of leachate nitrogen removal in the bioreactor landfill system. The results showed that intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse could stimulate the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The population of denitrifying bacteria was 4 to approximately 13 orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional landfilled waste layers, and the maximal value of nitrifying bacteria population reached 10(9) cells g(-1). The bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse increased the potential of nitrogen removal from re-circulated leachate in the landfill bioreactor. By the end of the experiment, the concentrations of leachate NH4(+) -N and total nitrogen (TN) decreased to 186 mg x L(-1) and 289 mg x L(-1), being only 18% and 26% of control, respectively. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse also accelerated refuse decomposition, and increased the degree of waste stabilization.

Abstract:A sequential upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and air-lift loop sludge blanket (ALSB) treatment was introduced into leachate recirculation to remove organic matter and ammonia from leachate in a lab-scale bioreactor landfill. The results showed that the sequential anaerobic–aerobic process might remove above 90% of COD and near to 100% of NH4+-N from leachate under the optimum organic loading rate (OLR). The total COD removal efficiency was over 98% as the OLR increased to 6.8–7.7g/ld, but the effluent COD concentration increased to 2.9–4.8g/l in the UASB reactor, which inhibited the activity of nitrifying bacteria in the subsequent ALSB reactor. The NO3--N concentration in recycled leachate reached 270mg/l after treatment by the sequential anaerobic–aerobic process, but the landfill reactor could efficiently denitrify the nitrate. After 56 days operation, the leachate TN and NH4+-N concentrations decreased to less than 200mg/l in the bioreactor landfill system. The COD concentration was about 200mg/l with less than 8mg/l BOD in recycled leachate at the late stage. In addition, it was found that nitrate in recycled leachate had a negative effect on waste decomposition.
Effect of Leachate Recycle and Inoculation on Microbial Characteristics of Municipal Refuse in Landfill Bioreactors

Abstract:Activity development of key groups of enzymes involved in municipal refuse decomposition was measured in laboratory landfill bioreactors with and without leachate recycling and inoculation for about 210 days. The results showed that the enzymes (amylase, protease, cellulase, lipase and pectinase) were present in fresh refuse but at low values and positively affected by leachate recycling and refuse inoculation. The total average of cellulase activity in digesters D3 operated with leachate recycling but no inoculation, D4 and D5 operated with leachate recycling and inoculation was much higher than that in digesters D1 and D2 without leachate recycling and inoculation by 88%-127%, 117%-162% and 64%-98%. The total average of protease activity was higher in digester D4 than that in digesters D1, D2, D3 and D5 by 63%, 39%, 24% and 24%, respectively, and the positive effect of leachate recycling and inoculation on protease activity of landfilled refuse mainly was at the first two months. The total average of amylase activity was higher in digesters D3, D4 and D5 than that in digesters D1 and D2 by 83%-132%, 96%-148% and 81%-129%. During the early phase of incubation, the stimulatory effect of inoculation on lipase activity was measured, but refuse moisture was the main factor affecting lipase activity of landfilled refuse. The inoculation, initial and continuous inoculation of microorganisms existing in leachate, was the mainly stimulatory factor affecting pectinase activity of landfilled refuse.
Effect of Fenton Oxidation on Biodegradability, Biotoxicity and Dissolved Organic Matter Distribution of Concentrated Landfill Leachate Derived from a Membrane Process

Abstract:The treatment of concentrated landfill leachate from membrane process is a troublesome issue due to high concentrations of biorecalcitrant pollutants. In this study, the effect of Fenton process on dissolved organic matter (DOM) distribution (i.e. humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and hydrophilic fraction (HyI)), chemical forms of toxic organic compounds and metals, and their biotoxicity were investigated. In the concentrated leachate, toluene, ethylbenzene and chlorobenzene predominated in the HyI fraction, while phthalate esters (PAEs) were mainly absorbed on the HA and FA fractions. PAEs were more readily removed from the HA and FA fractions than that from the HyI fraction in the Fenton process. The complexing abilities of DOM varied with types of metal in the concentrated leachate. The biotoxicities of the DOM fractions to luminescent bacteria (Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 mutation) were HA > FA > - HyI. The biotoxicities of the hydrophobic organic contaminants to luminescent bacteria were not obvious in the concentrated leachate due to their low concentrations. Metals might be the main contributor to the biotoxicity to luminous bacteria in the concentrated leachate. These results indicated that Fenton process could influence the pollutants distribution in DOM and their biotoxicities through the breakdown of HA and FA in the concentrated leachate.
Nitrogen Removal in the Bioreactor Landfill System with Intermittent Aeration at the Top of Landfilled Waste

Abstract:High ammonia concentration of recycled landfill leachate makes it very difficult to treat. In this work, a vertical aerobic/anoxic/anaerobic lab-scale bioreactor landfill system, which was constructed by intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste, as a bioreactor for in situ nitrogen removal was investigated during waste stabilization. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste might stimulate the growth of nitrifying bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in the top and middle layers of waste. The nitrifying bacteria population for the landfill bioreactor with intermittent aeration system reached between106 and 108cells/dryg waste, although it decreased 2 orders of magnitude on day 30, due to the inhibitory effect of the acid environment and high organic matter in the landfilled waste. The denitrifying bacteria population increased by between 4 and 13 orders of magnitude compared with conventional anaerobic landfilled waste layers. Leachate NO3−–N concentration was very low in both two experimental landfill reactors. After 105 days operation, leachate NH4+–N and TN concentrations for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system dropped to 186 and 289mg/l, respectively, while they were still kept above 1000mg/l for the landfill reactor without intermittent aerobic system. In addition, there is an increase in the rate of waste stabilization as well as an increase of 12% in the total waste settlement for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system.
Releasing Behavior of Zinc in Recirculated Bioreactor Landfill

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to determine the releasing behavior of zinc in municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfill site with respect to refuse and leachate as an inseparable system. Two simulated bioreactor landfills, one with leachate recirculation and the other without, were operated in room temperature for 320 days. Results showed that the content of zinc in MSW could amount to 591.29 +/- 31.33-632.14 +/- 18.98 mu g g(-1) dry weight(-1) (DW-1). It exceeded the set standard for "Environmental quality standard for soil" (<= 500 mu g g(-1) DW-1) and had high potential environmental risk. The releasing behavior of zinc in refuse mainly experienced speciation of solid-Zn, Zn2+, ZnHCO3, ZnCO3, Zn(OH)(+), Zn(OH)(2), Zn(NH3)(4)(2+), ZnS, etc. Zinc in refuse showed behaviors of staggered migration and retention, which corresponded with the degradation process of refuse in bioreactor landfill. The Zn2+ concentration in leachate, which varied correspondingly with releasing behavior of zinc in refuse, were 0.75 mg L-1 to 3.13 mg L-1 and had no great difference in landfill with different operation modes (CL and RL). However, the amount of Zn2+ leached out from refuse, which accounted for 28.70 mg and 130.67 mg after 320 day's operation, respectively. Abstract:"Fossetto" landfill (Monsummano Terme - Tuscany, Italy) started operation in 1988 as a controlled landfill accepting mixed municipal solid waste collected without any attempt of recycling. Then, progressively, following the evolution of the state-of-the-art, it adopted biogas extraction and valorisation systems and mechanical-biological treatment for incoming waste (both since 2003). Finally, since 2006, in the plant is performed on-site reverse osmosis leachate treatment with the concentrated leachate being recirculated back into the landfill body. Recently a new landfill cell, separate from the others, was put in operation adding a capacity of 200,000 m 3 to the already available 1,095,000 m 3 . This plant can provide long term leachate composition data to study the evolution and impact of changing landfill technology and waste composition on various parameters. The rise in leachate production (+84 % in 2018–2022 respect to the period before recirculation) cannot be totally attributable to recirculation but could be also linked to the increase in the amount of landfilled waste. The concentration of certain parameters (NH 4 + , Cl − and to a less extent of COD) increased (+60 %, +58 %, +17 % respectively in the last five years with respect to the period before recirculation); however, this increase did not influence the performance of the treatment plant. Nevertheless, the overall leachate management would benefit from an optimized reinjection system.

Abstract:Landfill leachates from municipal landfills are usually heavily contaminated and thus require treatments before direct discharge into natural waters. Selecting the appropriate technology for leachate treatment is still a major challenge for operations in municipal landfills. Biodegradation is effective for treating young leachates, whereas old leachates require processes such as chemical oxidation, coagulation–flocculation, chemical precipitation, ozonation, activated carbon adsorption, and reverse osmosis. Recently, the combination of biological pretreatments followed by physico-chemical processes has been shown to be very efficient. Here we review the efficiency of biological treatment in combination with reverse osmosis to clean landfill leachates. We studied in particular processes including a membrane bioreactor, activated sludge, a rotating biological contactor, and up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket treatments, followed by reverse osmosis. We found a 99–99.5% removal of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and a 99–99.8% removal of N–NH4+ using reverse osmosis and activated sludge. Using reverse osmosis with a rotating biological contactor, we observed 99% removal of COD, biochemical oxygen demand and N–NH4+. The combination of reverse osmosis, activated sludge and rotating biological contactor removed 98–99.2% of Cl− and 99–99.7% of Pb. Total suspended solids are best removed, up to 99%, by either a combination of reverse osmosis with membrane bioreactor, or reverse osmosis with activated sludge.

[Effects of Leachate Recirculation Volume on Its Characteristic and Landfill Stabilization Rate].

Abstract:Impacts of recirculation volume on leachate characteristic and landfill stabilization rate were studied. Four simulated bioreactor landfill columns were operated weekly with different recirculation ratios, respectively 5.3%, 2.7%, 0.67% leachate and 0.33% water, in this comparative research. The results indicate that simulated reactor with 5.3% recirculation ratio has the most rapidly stabilization rate and release the most organic pollutant. The shortest methane generation delay was also observed in this column. While simulated reactor with 2.7% recirculation ratio formed the best microbe environment and kept the highest reactor temperature 35 degrees C. It also had the best impactive load capacity and treating efficiency to leachate, and removal of COD was 77% and BOD5 was 88% respectively. In actual projects, appropriate leachate recirculation volume should be chosen according to design purpose of landfill sites.
Study on Refuse Stabilization in Bioreactor Landfills for Nitrogen Removal

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and refuse stabilization were investigated in the bioreactor landfills with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation.The results showed that the decrease in leachate NH_4~+-N concentration in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse was slower than that with an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,but the theoretical energy consumption of the former was about 98% lower than the latter.The infrastructure investment of aerobic nitrifying reactor and disposal of sludge were no longer indispensable.The way of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse accelerated the degsadation of waste and organic matter in leachate,increased the degree of waste stabilization and enhanced the subsidence by 10%-12%.However,an aerobic reactor using treated leachate recirculation would bring about a shortage of carbon source at later stage of refuse decomposition,which resulted in slower waste stabilization.Because of the organic matter consumption of denitrifiaction process and the metabolic activity of aerobes,leachate maximal COD_(Cr) and VFA concentrations in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse ammounted to only 50% of the control,and the gas production from the methanogenic reactor reduced by 42%-44%.

Abstract:Landfill leachate concentrate is a type of refractory organic wastewater with high environmental risk. Identification of refractory components and insights into the molecular transformations of the organics are essential for the development of efficient treatment process. In this report, molecular compositions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in leachate concentrate, as well as changes after anaerobic/aerobic biodegradation and coagulation with salts, were characterized using electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). DOM in leachate concentrate were more saturated and less oxidized with more nitrogen and sulfur-containing substances (accounting for 50.0%), comparing with natural organic matter in Suwannee River. Selectivity for different classes of organics during biodegradation and coagulation processes was observed. Substances with low oxidation degree (O/C < 0.3) were more reactive during biodegradation process, leading to the formation of highly oxidized molecules (O/C > 0.5). Unsaturated (H/C < 1.0) and oxidized (O/C > 0.4) substances containing carboxyl groups were preferentially removed after coagulation with Al or Fe sulfate. The complementary functions of biodegradation and coagulation in the treatment of DOM in leachate concentrate were verified at the molecular level. Lignin-derived compounds and sulfur-containing substances in leachate concentrate were resistant to biodegradation and coagulation treatments. To treat leachate concentrate more effectively, processes aimed at removal of such DOM should be developed.
Aerobic SMBR/reverse Osmosis System Enhanced by Fenton Oxidation for Advanced Treatment of Old Municipal Landfill Leachate

Abstract:A novel combined process of Fenton oxidation, submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) was applied as an appropriate option for old municipal landfill leachate treatment. Fenton process was designed to intensively solve the problem of non-biodegradable organic pollutant removal and low biodegradability of leachate, although the removal of ammonia-nitrogen was similar to 10%. After SMBR treatment, it not only presented a higher removal efficiency of organics, but also exhibited high ammonia-nitrogen removal of 80% on average. The variation of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, zeta potential, and particle size of flocs after Fenton effluent continually fed in SMBR was found to be benefit for alleviating membrane fouling. Finally, three kinds of RO membranes (RE. CPA, and BW) were applied to treat SMBR effluents and successfully met wastewater re-utilization requirement. Compared with simple RO process, the troublesome membrane fouling can be effectively reduced in the combined process. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effect of Concentrated Leachate Recirculation on Leachate Level and Slope Stability of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill

Abstract:260 tons concentrated leachate per day is produced at the leachate treatment plant at Chang'an landfill,which is considered to be recirculated into the landfill of municipal solid wastes.The effect of leachate recirculation on the slope stability of the landfill should be evaluated.The results from engineering geology and hydrogeology survey were firstly presented.Three-dimensional unsaturated-saturated seepage analyses were carried out by using GMS software to predict the change of leachate level as a result of the leachate recirculation.Based on the leachate levels and pore-water pressures obtained from the seepage analyses,slope stability analyses were carried out to evaluate the safety of the landfill.Some control measures were proposed to eliminate the adverse effect of leachate recirculation on the landfill safety.The analyses indicate that the factor of safety(FS) for the landfill with the current leachate level is slightly greater than the safety requirement(FS=1.3),and the current leachate level happens to be the critical level.Direct leachate recirculation will result in a significant rise in leachate level,which will cause a significant decrease in the landfill safety.The landfill is likely to fail after a direct leachate recirculation.If the leachate recirculation is executed after the current leachate level is lowered down by 3 m and the resultant leachate level will be lower than the current leachate level,the landfill can remain safe.Vertical pumping wells are proposed to implement the drawdown work,and if 45 wells are used and pumping is conducfed for 3 mouths,the leachate level will decrease by 3 m,which meets the safety requirement.
Investigation on characteristics of leachate and concentrated leachate in three landfill leachate treatment plants

Abstract:Concentrated leachate from membrane treatment processes is a potential pollution source for the surroundings. In this study, with comparison of the landfill leachate, chemical and microbial characteristics of concentrated leachate including biodegradability, amount of nitrogenous compounds and heavy metals, dissolved organic matter composition, and microbial community were investigated in three landfill leachate treatment plants. The results showed that hydrophilic (HyI) fraction was the major dissolved organic carbon in the landfill leachates, accounting for 54.6-60.7%, while humic substances including humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) were relatively higher in the concentrated leachates, ranging from 61.7% to 69.2%. Conjugated nitrogen existed mainly in FA and HyI in the concentrated leachates. The analysis of excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254nm (SUVA254) and GC/MS showed that aromatic compounds, long-chain hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons were abundant in the concentrated leachates. During landfill leachate treatment processes, Cl(-), SO4(2-) and heavy metals were commonly accumulated in the concentrated leachates. NO3(-)N and/or NH4(+)N were the major nitrogenous compounds in the concentrated leachates. All the leachates from three landfill sites contained toluene in the range of 44.5-728.4μgL(-1). Ethylbenzene, chlorobenzene, and the phthalic acid esters including dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate and di-n-octyl phthalate were also detected in the concentrated leachates. Higher microbial diversity was observed in the concentrated leachate in comparison with landfill leachate.

Abstract:Biological treatment is one of the most promising efficient, low-carbon and affordable approaches for the treatment of recalcitrantly degradable wastewater, such as landfill leachate. However, even the macroscopic molecular level analysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is limiting to the enhancement of biological treatment efficacy, and there is an urgent need for deeper exploration of DOM to gain insights into the key constraining substances. In the present study targeting at piercing leachate organic at molecular level, nitrogen-containing dissolved organic matter (DOM N ) was identified to be the bottleneck that govern the biotreatment potential. The conclusion was made based on two series of experiments that compared the same anoxic-aerobic membrane bioreactor process (A process) operated stably at different regions, and compared with C process that coupling A process with a circulation aeration membrane bioreactor to improve aeration efficiency. The results confirmed that the relative abundance of DOM N was absolutely dominant among the three categories of DOM in all biologically treated samples, contributing to 60.36 %–65.81 % in removed-DOM, 60.33 %–70.95 % in refractory-DOM and 63.14 %–71.36 % in derived-DOM. Specifically, the high latitude A process had much lower DOM N removal rate than the low latitude A process ( p < 0.05) and much higher refractory and derivatization rates than the low latitude A process ( p < 0.05). DOM had similar results. No statistically significant differences were observed in the proportion of the three categories of DOM (DOM N ), the elements composition, and the subcategory composition of the C process compared to the A process, in which the DOM (DOM N ) derivation rate of NEC1-C (31.92 % and 33.41 %) was much higher than that of NEC1-A (20.88 % and 22.19 %). However, the AI wa and AImod wa of the derived-DOM (DOM N ) were significantly higher in the C process than in the A process, which implied that excessive aeration did not enhance the biological treatment potential of the A process, but instead led to the proliferation of microorganisms and the secretion of extracellular polymer substances, which resulted in the derivation of more complex compounds. The results of the correlation analysis indicated that there were some regional differences in the molecular information of DOM N driven by climate temperature. In addition, it was worth mentioning that the nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC wa ) of derived-DOM N in different regions of A process was noticeably higher than the corresponding DOM ( p < 0.0001), implying that the derived-DOM N were still highly biodegradable, in other words, there was still great room for improving the biological treatment potential of landfill leachate. The present study provided a deeper insight and analysis of landfill leachate at the molecular level (DOM N ) through multiple practical engineering cases, with a view to providing a theoretical basis for efficient optimization of biological treatment.

Abstract:In this study, the leachate treatments were compared in two simulated landfill bioreactors with different operation modes. In one reactor, the leachate was circulated between a landfi ll and a methanogenic reactor, while the other reactor was operated using direct recirculation of the leachate. The pH, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), volatile fatty acids (VFA), NH4 +−N of leachate, and the biologically degradable material (BDM), the enzymatic activities of municipal solid waste (MSW) were analyzed to achieve the essential characterization of the landfill. The results revealed that the loss of organic materials from the landfill occurred in an active methanogenic environment in the later period, while the environment was acidic due to a high concentration of VFA and contained a large volume of BDM during the early stage. In addition, the dehydrogenase and polyphenol oxidase activities of refuse were majority higher in the bioreactor landfill that was connected to a methanogenic reactor. Furthermore, the effi ciency of leachate treatment was enhance at least 20%, and the stabilization process was accelerated over 50% in the landfill that was operated in conjunction with the methanogenic reactor when compared to the landfill in which there was direct leachate recirculation.

Abstract:Stabilized landfill leachates are characterized by a high chemical oxygen demand and limited biodegradability. This study investigates the removal of the organic fraction (chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon) using a treatment approach that couples membrane processes and wet air oxidation (operating at 200–300 °C and 18 MPa). The aim is to address the challenges posed by landfill leachate membrane concentrates considering variations throughout the year across three different seasons. The efficiency of the treatment path was assessed through the removal of the chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon, with additional insights provided by fluorescence spectroscopy to evaluate the degradation of the organic compounds' complexity. The most favorable results were achieved at the highest temperature (300 °C) with removals over 90% for total organic carbon and 87% for chemical oxygen demand, along with a complete elimination of fluorescence. The coupling of membrane processes and wet air oxidation has demonstrated its effectiveness in degrading the organic compounds of landfill leachates. The overall mass balance on the treatment path indicates the feasibility of discharging the treated effluent into the environment, meeting regulatory thresholds for total organic carbon and chemical oxygen concentrations.

Abstract:Landfill leachate poses significant risks to the environment and human health if not managed properly due to its potential to contaminate soil, ground, and surface waters. Consequently, effluent standards for landfill leachate have been continuously reviewed to manage these risks. A combination of treatment techniques (e.g., physico-chemical and biological) are usually required to treat landfill leachate due to its complexity, variability, and potentially high concentrations of pollutants. This review considers the various types of techniques used to treat landfill leachate/leachate concentrate, including advanced oxidation process (AOP), membrane bioreactor, denitrification, biofilm reactors, and electrocoagulation. The occurrence and treatment of emerging contaminants in landfill leachate, and opportunities for development are also considered. The review covers the basic principles through to the latest developments in research, including the effectiveness of engineering applications, their economic and technical challenges, together with current gaps in the knowledge and the prospects for leachate treatment. A systematic review of the technical characteristics of the engineering applications, used in leachate membrane concentrate treatment, showed that low-energy direct heat transfer evaporation technology had good prospects for future development. Refractory organic compounds, high concentrations of ammonia, high salinity, and concentrated leachate were of high concern. Hence, extensive research has been conducted on the degradation of refractory organic compounds using various AOPs, and the denitrification of ammonia species by novel biological pathways (e.g., anaerobic ammonium oxidation, short-cut denitrification processes). Despite the significant number of promising laboratory scale applications, further research is needed to demonstrate their effectiveness on a commercial/large scale.
