Abstract:Microspectroscopic methods were explored to investigate binder effects occurring in ZSM-5-containing SiO2- and Al2O3-bound millimetre-sized extrudates. Using thiophene as a selective probe for Brønsted acidity, coupled with time-resolved in situ UV/Vis and confocal fluorescence microspectroscopy, variations in reactivity and selectivity between the two distinct binder types were established. It was found that aluminium migration occurs in ZSM-5-containing Al2O3-bound extrudates, forming additional Brønsted acid sites. These sites strongly influence the oligomer selectivity, favouring the formation of thiol-like species (i.e., ring-opened species) in contrast to higher oligomers, predominantly formed on SiO2-bound ZSM-5-containing extrudates. Not only were the location and distribution of these oligomers visualised by 3 D analysis, it was also observed that more conjugated species appeared to grow off the surface of the zeolite ZSM-5 crystals (containing less conjugated species) into the surrounding binder material. Furthermore, a higher binder content resulted in an increasing overall reactivity owing to the greater number of stored thiophene monomers available per Brønsted acid site.
Optical investigation of the intergrowth structure and accessibility of Brønsted acid sites in etched SSZ-13 zeolite crystals by confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:Template decomposition followed by confocal fluorescence microscopy reveals a tetragonal-pyramidal intergrowth of subunits in micrometer-sized nearly cubic SSZ-13 zeolite crystals. In order to accentuate intergrowth boundaries and defect-rich areas within the individual large zeolite crystals, a treatment with an etching NaOH solution is applied. The defective areas are visualized by monitoring the spatial distribution of fluorescent tracer molecules within the individual SSZ-13 crystals by confocal fluorescence microscopy. These fluorescent tracer molecules are formed at the inner and outer crystal surfaces by utilizing the catalytic activity of the zeolite in the oligomerization reaction of styrene derivatives. This approach reveals various types of etching patterns that are an indication for the defectiveness of the studied crystals. We can show that specially one type of crystals, denoted as core-shell type, is highly accessible to the styrene molecules after etching. Despite the large crystal dimensions, the whole core-shell type SSZ-13 crystal is utilized for catalytic reaction. Furthermore, the confocal fluorescence microscopy measurements indicate a nonuniform distribution of the catalytically important Brønsted acid sites underlining the importance of space-resolved measurements.

Abstract:Mesoporous ZSM‐5 samples were prepared from a commercial ZSM‐5 (Si/Al =15), using a 2‐step micelle‐templating procedure. By varying the NaOH/Si synthesis ratio in the range of 0.3‐0.7, materials with different texture and acidity were obtained. The nature and concentration of the acid sites, as well as their accessibility were examined by FTIR/pyridine spectroscopy and catalytic test reactions, i.e. tert‐butylation of phenol with tert‐butyl alcohol and esterification of benzyl alcohol with hexanoic acid.

Abstract:Variations in the structure and acidity properties of HZSM‐5 zeolites with reduction in crystal sizes down to nanoscale (less than 100 nm) have been investigated by XRD, TEM and solid‐state NMR with a system capable of in situ sample pretreatment. As evidenced by a combination of 27 Al MAS NMR, 29 Si MAS, CP/MAS NMR and 1 H MAS NMR techniques, the downsize of the zeolite crystal leads to an obvious line broadening of the 27 Al, 29 Si MAS NMR spectrum, an increasing of the silanol concentration on the external surface, and a pronounced alteration of the acidity distribution between the external and internal surfaces of the zeolite. In a HZSM‐5 zeolite with an average size at about 70 nm, the nonacidic hydroxyl groups (silanols) are about 14% with respect to the total amount of Si, while only 4% of such hydroxyl groups exist in the same kind of zeolite at 1000 nm crystal size. The result of 1 H MAS NMR obtained using Fluorinert ® FC‐43 (perfluorotributyl amine) as a probe molecule demonstrates that most of the silanols are located on the external surface of the zeolite. Moreover, the concentration of Brønsted acid sites on the external surface of the nano‐structured zeolite appears to be distinctly higher than that of the microsized zeolite.
Single Versus Multiple Internal Mammary Artery Grafting for Coronary Artery Bypass: 15-Year Follow-Up of a Clinical Practice Trial

Abstract:Background—The long-term clinical advantages of using routine multiple internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts for coronary artery bypass (CAB) are not clear. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that multiple IMA grafts would provide better 15-year outcomes when compared with single IMA and vein grafts. Methods and Results—Between 1984 and 1987, 1067 consecutive patients undergoing isolated CAB were referred to 1 surgeon practicing primarily single and another surgeon maximizing multiple IMA grafts (clinical practice trial). A 207-patient subset with multiple IMAs underwent postoperative graft angiography at 1 to 32 weeks to define initial IMA patency. Patients were followed-up yearly, and the groups were analyzed as (I) surgical strategy (surgeon operating) (single=413 versus multiple=654), (II) ultimate operation performed (single=418 versus multiple=449), or (III) single versus multiple coronary systems revascularized with IMAs (single=490 versus multiple=377). Advantages of this study design were that an entire referral population was examined, multiple IMAs were applied to the entire spectrum of baseline patient risk, 15-year follow-up provided a complete prognostic picture, and the subgroups were potentially comparable at baseline. In all 3 analyses, single and multiple groups were statistically similar with respect to baseline, operative, and immediate postoperative variables. Early IMA patency was 98.5% (333/338 grafts patent), validating the quality of IMA procedures. Unadjusted and adjusted 15-year outcome analyses for I, II, and III for death, myocardial infarction, percutaneous coronary intervention, redo coronary bypass, and the composite of all events identified multiple versus single as a significant predictor of outcome for the composite end point in adjusted analysis III (hazard ratio=0.808; 95% CI, 0.689 to 0.948; P=0.009), because of a 5% to 10% absolute reduction in each of the outcome variables at 15 years. Moreover, >50% reduction in reoperation rate was observed at 15 years in every analysis. Conclusions—At 15-year follow-up, multiple IMA grafting was associated with a 19.2% adjusted risk reduction in death and cardiac events, caused by decreases in all adverse end points and fewer reoperations. These data indicate that the clinical advantages of maximizing IMA conduits are significant. Based on this information, it is suggested that multiple IMA grafting to 2 coronary systems should be applied liberally to patients with noncardiac risk profiles predictive of long-term survival.

Abstract:AbstractMicroporous H‐ZSM‐5 containing one Brønsted acid site per asymmetric unit is deliberately chosen to host pyridine, methanol, and ammonia as guest molecules. By using new‐generation in situ synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement, the slight but significant alteration in scattering parameters of framework atoms modified by the guest molecules enables the user to elucidate their adsorption geometries and interactions with the Brønsted acid sites in H‐ZSM‐5 in terms of atomic distances and angles within experimental errors. The conclusion, although demonstrated in the H‐ZSM‐5, is expected to be transferable to other zeolites. This approach provides a stepping stone towards the rational engineering of molecular interaction(s) with acid sites in zeolitic catalysis.
Reproductive performance of thoroughbred mares on six commercial stud farms.

Abstract:The records of 1630 mare years from 6 Thoroughbred stud farms in south eastern Australia were analysed for the years 1981 to 1986. Overall pregnancy and foaling rates were 83.9% and 69.3%, respectively. When calculated per served oestrous cycle, pregnancy and foaling rates were 54.7% and 43.1%, respectively. Pregnancy and foaling rates were higher (P < 0.001) for mares 3 to 10 years of age than for older mares. There was no difference in the pregnancy rates of maiden, barren and foaling mares. The foaling rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in mares that became pregnant during the first served oestrous cycle (77.8%) than in mares that needed two served oestrous cycles to become pregnant (65.4%). Of all diagnosed pregnancies, 19.5% were not completed. Pregnancy loss was lower (P < 0.05) in maiden (12.4%) than in barren (19.7%) or foaling (20.9%) mares. Twins were diagnosed in 7.8% of all pregnancies. If one conceptus was lost without external interference, 84.1% of pregnancies went to term. If one conceptus was manually crushed, 55.9% of pregnancies were maintained. If prostaglandin was used to terminate twin pregnancies, 60% of mares so treated produced foals the following year.
A Supramolecular View on the Cooperative Role of Brønsted and Lewis Acid Sites in Zeolites for Methanol Conversion

Abstract:A systematic molecular level and spectroscopic investigation is presented to show the cooperative role of Brønsted acid and Lewis acid sites in zeolites for the conversion of methanol. Extra-framework alkaline-earth metal containing species and aluminum species decrease the number of Brønsted acid sites, as protonated metal clusters are formed. A combined experimental and theoretical effort shows that postsynthetically modified ZSM-5 zeolites, by incorporation of extra-framework alkaline-earth metals or by demetalation with dealuminating agents, contain both mononuclear [MOH]+ and double protonated binuclear metal clusters [M(μ-OH)2M]2+ (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and HOAl). The metal in the extra-framework clusters has a Lewis acid character, which is confirmed experimentally and theoretically by IR spectra of adsorbed pyridine. The strength of the Lewis acid sites (Mg > Ca > Sr > Ba) was characterized by a blue shift of characteristic IR peaks, thus offering a tool to sample Lewis acidity experimentally. The incorporation of extra-framework Lewis acid sites has a substantial influence on the reactivity of propene and benzene methylations. Alkaline-earth Lewis acid sites yield increased benzene methylation barriers and destabilization of typical aromatic intermediates, whereas propene methylation routes are less affected. The effect on the catalytic function is especially induced by the double protonated binuclear species. Overall, the extra-framework metal clusters have a dual effect on the catalytic function. By reducing the number of Brønsted acid sites and suppressing typical catalytic reactions in which aromatics are involved, an optimal propene selectivity and increased lifetime for methanol conversion over zeolites is obtained. The combined experimental and theoretical approach gives a unique insight into the nature of the supramolecular zeolite catalyst for methanol conversion which can be meticulously tuned by subtle interplay of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites.

The Effects of Silanation of External Acid Sites on the Structure and Catalytic Behavior of Mo/H–ZSM5

Abstract:The selective silanation of external acid sites in H–ZSM5 using large organosilane reagents was used to decrease the density of such sites and the number of MoOx species retained at external surfaces during cation exchange using MoO3/H–ZSM5 physical mixtures. On samples prepared using silica-modified H–ZSM5, acid sites, MoOx precursors, and the active MoCx species formed during CH4 reactions at 950 K reside predominately within zeolite channels, where spatial constraints inhibit bimolecular chain-growth pathways. As a result, these samples show higher selectivities to desired C2–C6 aromatics and lower deactivation rates than those prepared from untreated H–ZSM5. CH4 conversion rates are also higher on Mo/H–ZSM5 samples prepared from silanated H–ZSM5, because of the more complete exchange and higher dispersion of MoOx precursors. In situ X-ray absorption measurements showed that silanation of external OH groups does not influence the structure of the MoOx precursors formed during synthesis or of active MoCx species formed during CH4 reactions from exchanged (Mo2O5)2+ dimers. The substantial absence of acidic OH groups and of MoCx species sites at unconstrained external surfaces leads to significant improvements in activity, selectivity, and stability for Mo/H–ZSM5 catalysts for CH4 pyrolysis reactions.
The Effect of Adsorbed Molecule Gas-Phase Deprotonation Enthalpy on Ion Exchange in Sodium Exchanged Zeolites: an in Situ FTIR Investigation

Abstract:Molecular-level understanding of the interactions between reactants and the surface of solid catalysts is of importance to the rational design of catalysts. Here, in situ transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is employed to investigate the ion exchange between the acidic hydrogen in organic molecules that have been adsorbed from the gas phase and sodium cations in zeolites. Organic compounds with functional groups common among key biomass-derived compounds are used as probe molecules. We demonstrate that ion exchange between acidic hydrogen in organic molecules and the sodium cations in zeolites with the FAU topology produces Brønsted acid sites and the corresponding adsorbed salt species by identifying signature spectroscopic bands. Furthermore, the gas-phase deprotonation enthalpy (GPDE) of the organic compounds is identified as a key descriptor in determining the feasibility and extent of the exchange process. Molecules with GPDE below 1462 kJ/mol, e.g., m-cresol (1462 kJ/mol), propanoic acid (1454), acetic acid (1457), acrylic acid (1440) and trifluoroacetic acid (1357), show clear vibrational bands for Brønsted acid sites and the corresponding sodium salts, while molecules with higher GPDE, such as trifluoroethanol (1513), ethanol (1586), and water (1622) do not. These data indicate that the degree of dissociation of the acidic hydrogen is a key element in the ion exchange. The generality of this process in zeolites is established by the observation of similar results on zeolites with differing topologies (FAU, MFI, *BEA, and MOR).
What Is Being Measured with P-Bearing NMR Probe Molecules Adsorbed on Zeolites?

Abstract:Elucidating the nature, strength, and siting of acid sites in zeolites is fundamental to fathom their reactivity and catalytic behavior. Despite decades of research, this endeavor remains a major challenge. Trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) has been proposed as a reliable probe molecule to study the acid properties of solid acid catalysts, allowing the identification of distinct Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and the assessment of Brønsted acid strengths. Recently, doubts have been raised regarding the assignment of the 31P NMR resonances of TMPO-loaded zeolites. Here, it is shown that a judicious control of TMPO loading combined with two-dimensional 1H–31P HETCOR solid-state NMR, DFT, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD)-based computational modeling provides an unprecedented atomistic description of the host–guest and guest–guest interactions of TMPO molecules confined within HZSM-5 molecular-sized voids. 31P NMR resonances usually assigned to TMPO molecules interacting with Brønsted sites of different acid strength arise instead from both changes in the probe molecule confinement effects at ZSM-5 channel system and the formation of protonated TMPO dimers. Moreover, DFT/AIMD shows that the 1H and 31P NMR chemical shifts strongly depend on the siting of the framework aluminum atoms. Vitamin K to Neonates: Peroral versus Intramuscular Administration

Abstract:ABSTRACT. In a randomized study of 300 infants, the effect of 1 mg of peroral vitamin K given at birth was compared to the same dose given as an intramuscular injection. The combined activity of coagulation factor II + VII + X taken after 48 and before 72 hours after delivery served as the primary endpoint. Prothrombin (antigen) and PIVKA II (acarboxyprothrombin) were also measured. All infants were observed for events of bleeding until discharge from the hospital, normally on the fifth day. No significant differences between the groups in any of the biochemical markers were observed. The 95% confidence limits of the differences were very narrow for all factors. No cases of bleeding were observed. We conclude that administration of 1 mg peroral vitamin K is as efficient as intramuscular administration of the same dose in the prevention of classical hemorrhagic disease of the newborn.

Abstract:In this study, we assessed the quantity, strength, and acidity of zeolite composites comprising Silicalite-1 grown on ZSM-5 crystals using a combination of infrared (IR) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The composites were created through the direct growth of Silicalite-1 crystals on ZSM-5 (P_ZSM-5), either with or without the organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) introduced into the ZSM-5 channels (samples: H_ZSM-5_Sil1 and TPA_ZSM-5_Sil1). The results revealed that Silicalite-1 grew differently when the ZSM-5 core was in the H+ form (empty pores) compared to when the OSDA was still present in the sample. This distinction was evident in the textural properties, with a decrease in the micropore surface area and an increase in the external surface area in the H_ZSM-5_Sil1 compared to the parent sample. The TPA_ZSM-5_Sil1 composite exhibited characteristics similar to the parent zeolite. These findings were further supported by 29Si NMR, which revealed a comparable local order for the parent (P_ZSM-5) and TPA_ZSM-5_Sil1 samples, along with a broadening of the Q4 peak for the H_ZSM-5_Sil1 composite. Additionally, the acid sites were preserved in the TPA_ZSM-5_Sil1 composite, while in the H+-form core, the concentration of Brønsted acid sites significantly decreased. This reduction in isolated Brønsted acid sites was further corroborated by 1H NMR.

Abstract:The acid sites of zeolite are important local structures to control the products in the chemical conversion. However, it remains a great challenge to precisely design the structures of acid sites, since there are still lack the controllable methods to generate and identify them with a high resolution. Here, we use the lattice mismatch of the intergrown zeolite to enrich the inherent Lewis acid sites (LASs) at the interface of a mortise-tenon ZSM-5 catalyst (ZSM-5-MT) with a 90° intergrowth structure. ZSM-5-MT is formed by two perpendicular blocks that are atomically resolved by integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM). It can be revealed by various methods that novel framework-associated Al (AlFR) LASs are generated in ZSM-5-MT. Combining the iDPC-STEM results with other characterizations, we demonstrate that the partial missing of O atoms at interfaces results in the formation of inherent AlFR LASs in ZSM-5-MT. As a result, the ZSM-5-MT catalyst shows a higher selectivity of propylene and butene than the single-crystal ZSM-5 in the steady conversion of methanol. These results provide an efficient strategy to design the Lewis acidity in zeolite catalysts for tailored functions via interface engineering.

Abstract:The zeolite community spent 50 years in pursuing the synthesis of high-silica LTA -type zeolites, and ultimately succeeded with the pure-silica polymorph by applying specific structure-directing agents (SDA). The high-silica zeolite A has exhibited unique properties and strong potential to be applied as an adsorbent and catalyst in several novel processes. In the present study, the high-silica polymorphs of Si/Al ratios from 15 to ∞ were synthesized and subjected to thorough characterizations using multiple physicochemical methods. It has been revealed that there exists strong interactions between the organic SDAs and the framework. Therefore, removing the SDAs by calcination in air is difficult, and can only be done above 700 °C with a certain degree of framework dealumination. The retained framework structure shows connectivity defects and a unique combination of Brønsted and Lewis acidity. Using methanol-to-olefins (MTO) as a probe reaction, the catalytic performance of high-silica LTA -type zeolites has been evaluated. Compared to the well-studied CHA and MFI -type catalysts, high-silica zeolite A exhibited a shorter life-time and higher selectivity towards C 4 olefins, while methane selectivity increased with the deactivation.

Abstract:This manuscript represents a comparative study of Lewis acid catalysis using heteroatom-substituted delaminated zeolites, which are synthesized using an approach that obviates the need for surfactants and sonication during exfoliation. The comparison involves heteroatom substitution into silanol nests of delaminated zeolites consisting of DZ-1 and deboronated UCB-4. Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet (DR-UV) spectroscopy demonstrates framework heteroatom sites, and the Lewis acidity of these sites is confirmed using infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. The enhanced catalytic accessibility of these Lewis acid sites is confirmed when performing Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of substituted 2-adamantanones with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Comparison of delaminated Sn-DZ-1 with three-dimensional Sn-Beta for this reaction shows that the delaminated zeolite is more active for bulkier ketone substrates. The role of the two-dimensional crystalline framework of the delaminated zeolite on catalysis is highlighted by comparing delaminated zeolites Sn-DZ-1 with Sn-UCB-4. The former exhibits a significantly higher activity for Baeyer-Villiger oxidation, yet when comparing Ti-DZ-1 with Ti-UCB-4, it is the latter that exhibits a significantly higher activity for olefin epoxidation with organic hydrogen peroxide, whereas both delaminated zeolites are more robust and selective in epoxidation catalysis compared with amorphous Ti/SiO2.
Tuning the zeolite acidity enables selectivity control by suppressing ketene formation in lignin catalytic pyrolysis

Abstract:Unveiling catalytic mechanisms at a molecular level aids rational catalyst design and selectivity control for process optimization. In this study, we find that the Brønsted acid site density of the zeolite catalyst efficiently controls the guaiacol catalytic pyrolysis mechanism. Guaiacol demethylation to catechol initiates the reaction, as evidenced by the detected methyl radicals. The mechanism branches to form either fulvenone ( c -C 5 H 4 = C = O), a reactive ketene intermediate, by catechol dehydration, or phenol by acid-catalyzed dehydroxylation. At high Brønsted acid site density, fulvenone formation is inhibited due to surface coordination configuration of its precursor, catechol. By quantifying reactive intermediates and products utilizing operando photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy, we find evidence that ketene suppression is responsible for the fivefold phenol selectivity increase. Complementary fulvenone reaction pathway calculations, along with 29 Si NMR-MAS spectroscopy results corroborate the mechanism. The proposed, flexible operando approach is applicable to a broad variety of heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Zeolites, renowned for their abundant crystalline structures and moderate acidities, have garnered significant attention in industrial chemical processes. Among them, the diffusion behaviors of various hydrocarbons within zeolite play a pivotal role due to their profound impact on product selectivity and separation efficiency. While acid sites are essential in determining the catalytic performance of zeolites, their effect on intra‐crystalline diffusivities has often been neglected in catalyst design. Herein, we employ a homemade time‐resolved in‐situ Fourier Transform Infrared (TR in‐situ FT‐IR) spectroscopy to investigate the intricate interplay between Brønsted acid sites and various probe molecules. Our study reveals that an augmentation in the density of Brønsted acid sites within H‐ZSM‐5 zeolites remarkably enhances the diffusivity of 1‐butene, in stark contrast to the behavior observed for iso‐butane. This contrasting effect in diffusivity is attributed to the distinct nature of interactions between alkenes and alkanes with Brønsted acid sites. Specifically, the π‐H interactions between alkenes and acid sites act as a driving force, propelling the alkene molecules forward through the zeolite pores. These findings offer valuable insights into designing tailored zeolites with specific acid site properties, controlling the transport behaviors of various probe molecules, and promising new avenues for catalysis and separation.
