Abstract:Due to the advantages of low cost, easy fabrication, mechanical flexibility, the research on organic solar cells has attracted a lot of attentions in the last decades. Among countless organic materials, the most successful ones are conjugated polymers, which were widely used in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) in conjugation with the fullerene [1]. In view of the fact the interpenetratedphase-separated p-n composites offer more chances for excitons to reach the p-n interfaces, BHJ greatly facilitates the dissociation of photogenerated excitons before decaying to ground state. During exciton dissociation process, the exciton delocalization at an ultra fast timescale has been observed recently, which has considerable effects on the charge generation and device performance. In this work, based on the recent studies [2–4], we established a theoretical model of polymer solar cells (PSCs) incorporating the exciton delocalization process. Through the model, we found the increase of delocalized excitons (compared to the total generated excitons) will significantly improve the short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, fill factor and power conversion efficiency of PSCs. Particularly, the saturations of fill factor and open-circuit voltage are also observed, and the saturation points depend on the active layer thickness and recombination rate. For instance,the device model of 200nm thickness active layer has the saturated fill factor at 70% delocalization ratio, which is close to the conventional ratio of practical devices. The device configuration studied comprises a BHJ active layer sandwiched between a transparent anode and a metal cathode. Moreover, the active material is a mixture of OC 1 C 10 -PPV, as the donor, and PCBM, as the acceptor [5]. The generation rate of excitons is assumed to be homogeneous. The model proposed involves both the drift-diffusion model for photocarriers (Eq. (1)) and the diffusion and dissociation model for excitons (Eq. (2)). The governing equations are given as follows equation where q is elementary charge, n(p) is the electron (hole) density, and r G , r R are the parametersfor controlling exciton generation and bulk recombination, respectively. E is the internal E-field. µ and D are the mobility and diffusion coefficients. The exciton density is denoted by X diff and k diss is the exciton dissociation rate. The recombination R is taken to be a bimolecular form,with the rate given by Langevin [6], and η s is 0.25 for the singlet excitons. Using the physical parameters given by experiments [5], the nonlinear governing equation sets are solved self-consistently. The excitons are delocalized at an ultra fast timescale to form electron-hole pairs, which is much faster than the photo carrier relaxation time and exciton diffusion time. Consequently, the delocalization process was simulated by directly inserting the delocalization ratio η del into the equations.

Abstract:Ternary blend organic solar cells (OSCs) composed of three components in the active layer shows the potential to achieve higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) as compared to the binary counterpart due to the wider absorption spectrum, higher generation rate, and better morphology. However, the physical understanding of carrier generation and transport processes in the ternary blend OSCs has been limited explored. In the work, together with experimental studies of the two donors, one acceptor ternary blend OSCs with PCE > 12%, we will theoretically and experimentally describe the roles of the carrier generation (including exciton transfer, delocalization and dissociation), and carrier transport (particularly the hole transport) on the performance of ternary blend OSCs. Through theoretical and experimental investigations, critical design rules for improving the device performance are concluded: (1) improving the exciton delocalization ratio via donor ratio optimization with physical understanding, (2) selecting the donors with well overlap of emission and absorption spectra to promote a beneficial exciton transfer, (3) engineering the energy level of donors to form the blocking barrier for reducing hole transfer into the donor with high recombination loss. The work unveils the device physics which is fundamentally important for designing and optimizing high-performance ternary blend OSCs.
Charge Generation Dynamics in Organic Photovoltaic Blends under One-Sun-Equivalent Illumination Detected by Highly Sensitive Terahertz Spectroscopy

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices attain high performance with nonfullerene acceptors by utilizing the synergistic dual channels of charge generation that originate from excitations in both the donor and acceptor materials. However, the specific intermediate states that facilitate both channels are subject to debate. To address this issue, we employ time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy with improved sensitivity (ΔE/E < 10-6), enabling direct probing of charge generation dynamics in a prototypical PM6:Y6 bulk heterojunction system under one-sun-equivalent excitation density. Charge generation arising from donor excitations is characterized with a rise time of ∼9 ps, while that from acceptor excitations shows a rise time of ∼18 ps. Temperature-dependent measurements further reveal notably distinct activation energies for these two charge generation pathways. Additionally, the two channels of charge generation can be substantially manipulated by altering the ratio of bulk to interfaces. These findings strongly suggest the presence of two distinct intermediate states: interfacial and intramoiety excitations. These states are crucial in mediating the transfer of electrons and holes, driving charge generation within OPV devices.
Polymer Triplet Energy Levels Need Not Limit Photocurrent Collection in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:We study charge recombination via triplet excited states in donor/acceptor organic solar cells and find that, contrary to intuition, high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) can be obtained in polymer/fullerene blend devices even when the polymer triplet state is significantly lower in energy than the intermolecular charge transfer (CT) state. Our model donor system comprises the copolymer PIDT-PhanQ: poly(indacenodithiophene-co-phenanthro[9,10-b]quinoxaline), which when blended with phenyl-C(71)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(71)BM) is capable of achieving power conversion efficiencies of 6.0% and IQE ≈ 90%, despite the fact that the polymer triplet state lies 300 meV below the interfacial CT state. However, as we push the open circuit voltage (V(OC)) higher by tailoring the fullerene reduction potential, we observe signatures of a new recombination loss process near V(OC) = 1.0 V that we do not observe for PCBM-based devices. Using photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, we show that a new recombination path opens via the fullerene triplet manifold as the energy of the lowest CT state approaches the energy of the fullerene triplet. This pathway appears active even in cases where direct recombination via the polymer triplet remains thermodynamically accessible. These results suggest that kinetics, as opposed to thermodynamics, can dominate recombination via triplet excitons in these blends and that optimization of charge separation and kinetic suppression of charge recombination may be fruitful paths for the next generation of panchromatic organic solar cell materials with high V(OC) and J(SC).

Abstract:The development of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells has long been guided by the idea that excitons – bound electron-hole pairs created by light absorption – diffuse only 5–10 nm. True for many materials, this constraint led to an inherently complex device architecture – the bulk heterojunction – that has obscured our understanding of device physics, and handicapped rational material design. Here, we investigate the photophysics of a series of planar bilayer heterojunction devices incorporating fused-ring electron acceptors with power conversion efficiencies up to 11%. Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, we demonstrate the importance of long-range layer-to-layer energy transfer in planar structures, isolating this effect by including an insulating layer between the donor and acceptor layers to eliminate charge transfer effects. We show that the slab geometry facilitates substantially longer-range energy transfer than between isolated molecules or small domains. Along with high molecular packing densities, high absorption coefficients, and long exciton diffusion lengths, we show that these effects amount to exciton harvesting length scales that match the light absorption lengths and thereby enable efficient bilayer devices. Our quantitative analysis of bilayer structures also accounts for large domain sizes in bulk-heterojunction devices including fused-ring electron acceptors, and it quantifies the importance of strong resonant spectral overlap is for material selection and design for highly efficient OPVs.

Abstract:Innovation in medical research has been diverted at multiple occasions to enhance human performance. The predicted great progress in gene therapy has raised some concerns regarding its misuse in the world of sports (gene doping) for several years now. Even though there is no evidence that gene doping has ever been used in sports, the continuous improvement of gene therapy techniques increases the likelihood of abuse. Therefore, since 2004, efforts have been invested by the anti-doping community and WADA for the development of detection methods. Several nested PCR and qPCR-based strategies exploiting the absence of introns in the transgenic DNA have been proposed for the long-term detection of transgene in blood. Despite their great sensitivity, those protocols are hampered by limitations of the techniques that can be cumbersome and costly. The purpose of this perspective is to describe a new approach based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for the detection of gene doping. This protocol enables a rapid and simple method to amplify nucleic acids with a high sensitivity and specificity and with a simple visual detection of the results. LAMP is already being used in clinical application for the detection of viruses or mutations. Therefore, this technique has the potential to be further developed for the detection of foreign genetic material in elite athletes. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Excitation Wavelength‐Dependent Charge Generation Dynamics in a Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cell Interface

Abstract:Unraveling the charge generation dynamics at the donor–acceptor (D−A) interfaces is crucial for improving the photovoltaic performances of nonfullerene acceptor‐based organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations are used to explore the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics at a nonfullerene D–A PTB7@PDI interface. Based on the results, it is found that such an interface exhibits distinct charge generation processes upon excitation with different wavelengths. The excitation at ≈591 nm mainly results in the local exciton |PTB7∗>, whereas the charge transfer exciton |PTB7+PDI−> also has minor contribution. Later on, the electron transfer from PTB7 to PDI, i.e., channel I charge generation process, occurs in 1 ps. The situations are much more complex when the excitation is conducted using ≈487 nm light. The initial populated excitons include local excitons |PDI∗>, |PTB7∗>, and charge transfer exciton |PTB7+PDI−>, after which both channel I and channel II charge generation take place ultrafast. However, in both situations, the charge generation processes occur within a few picoseconds, which is consistent with previous experimental work. Such ultrafast charge generation processes in a wide range of solar spectra are one of the reasons responsible for the excellent photovoltaic properties of such OSCs. Herein, excitation wavelength‐dependent charge generation dynamics in nonfullerene solar cells is revealed by time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT)‐based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations.

Abstract:The study demonstrates how strong local‐exciton (LE)‐charge‐transfer (CT) hybridization in low‐energy offset bulk‐heterojunctions results in ultra‐fast CT state formation via direct photoexcitation. These strongly intermixed and emissive LE‐CT states accelerate the recombination of both CT and charge separated (CS) states. Moreover, the application of an external electric field can significantly weaken the LE‐CT hybridization, enhancing CT and CS state yield but attenuating device emission efficiency. In organic solar cells with very small energetic‐offset (ΔELE − CT), the charge‐transfer (CT) and local‐exciton (LE) states strongly interact via electronic hybridization and thermal population effects, suppressing the non‐radiative recombination. Here, we investigated the impact of these effects on charge generation and recombination. In the blends of PTO2:C8IC and PTO2:Y6 with very small, ultra‐fast CT state formation was observed, and assigned to direct photoexcitation resulting from strong hybridization of the LE and CT states (i.e., LE‐CT intermixed states). These states in turn accelerate the recombination of both CT and charge separated (CS) states. Moreover, they can be significantly weakened by an external‐electric field, which enhanced the yield of CT and CS states but attenuated the emission of the device. This study highlights that excessive LE‐CT hybridization due to very low , whilst enabling direct and ultrafast charge transfer and increasing the proportion of radiative versus non‐radiative recombination rates, comes at the expense of accelerating recombination losses competing with exciton‐to‐charge conversion process, resulting in a loss of photocurrent generation.

Abstract:Organic solar cells based on nonfullerene acceptor molecules show high charge generation yields with negligible driving force at the donor–acceptor (D/A) interface to drive exciton dissociation. Understanding the underlying charge generation dynamics in these material systems is crucial for further development of this technology. Herein, the acceptor exciton dissociation dynamics in these materials is studied using transient optical spectroscopy. The results show that exciton dissociation at the D/A interface takes up to ≈100 ps to complete, and this process is not significantly affected by temperature. A similar timescale for charge transfer (CT) state separation into free electrons and holes is observed at room temperature. But in contrast to the weak temperature dependence of exciton dissociation, the free charge generation rate and yield are significantly reduced at low temperature. This suggests that overcoming the Coulomb barrier for charge separation at the D/A interface is the main reason for the endothermic charge separation observed for these material systems, instead of diffusion‐limited exciton dissociation. Transient optical spectroscopy is used to study the temperature dependence of exciton dissociation and free charge generation dynamics in two model nonfullerene organic solar cell blends: P3TEA:SF‐PDI2 and PM6:Y6. The results suggest that overcoming the Coulomb barrier for interfacial charge separation is the main reason for the endothermic charge separation observed for these material systems, instead of diffusion‐limited exciton dissociation.

Exciton dissociation in organic solar cells: An embedded charge transfer state model

Abstract:Organic solar cells are a promising avenue for renewable energy, and our study introduces a comprehensive model to investigate exciton dissociation processes at the donor-acceptor interface. Examining quantum efficiency and emitted phonons in the charge transfer state (CTS), we explore scenarios like variations of the environment beyond the CTS and repulsive/attractive potentials. The donor-acceptor interface significantly influences the injection process, with minimal impact from the environment beyond the CTS. Attractive potentials can create localized electron states at the interface, below the acceptor band, without necessarily hampering a good injection at higher energies. Exploring different recombination processes, including acceptor-side and donor-side recombination, presents distinct phases in the energy-injection versus recombination rate. Our study highlights the important role of the type of recombination in determining the quantum efficiency and the existence of hot or cold charge transfer states. Finally, depending on the initial energy of the electron on the donor side, three distinct injection regimes are exhibited. The present model should be helpful for optimizing organic photovoltaic cell interfaces, highlighting the critical parameter interplay for enhanced performance.

Abstract:The highest efficiency organic photovoltaic (OPV)‐based solar cells, made from blends of electron donating and accepting organic semiconductors, are often characterized by strongly reduced (non‐Langevin) bimolecular recombination. Although the origins of the reduced recombination are debated, mechanisms related to the charge‐transfer (CT) state and free‐carrier encounter dynamics controlled by the size of donor and acceptor domains have been proposed as underlying factors. In this communication we report a novel photoluminescence‐based probe to accurately quantify the donor‐acceptor domain size in OPV blends. Specifically, we measure the domain size in high‐efficiency non‐fullerene (NFA) acceptor systems and compare them to a conventional fullerene. We find that the NFA‐based blends form larger domains but that the expected reductions in bi‐molecular recombination attributed to the enhanced domain sizes are too small to account for the observed reduction factors. Further, we show that the reduction of bimolecular recombination is correlated to enhanced exciton dynamics within the NFA domains. This indicates that the processes responsible for efficient exciton transport also enable strongly non‐Langevin recombination in high efficiency NFA‐based solar cells with low energy offsets. A combined diffusion/rate equation model to describe charge generation in phase-separated donor-acceptor blends

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has been largely improved by the introduction of novel non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Further improvements in PCE require a more comprehensive understanding of the free charge generation process. Recently, the small PCE of donor-acceptor blends with low offsets between the relevant frontier orbitals was attributed to inefficient exciton dissociation. However, another source of photocurrent loss is the competition between exciton diffusion and decay, which is particularly relevant for bilayers or bulk heterojunction blends with phase separated morphology. Here, we present an analytical model that combines exciton diffusion with a set of rate equations based on Marcus theory of charge transfer. An expression for the charge generation efficiency is derived from the steady-state solution of the model. Thereby, the intrinsic exciton lifetime is identified as a pivotal parameter to facilitate efficient charge generation in spite of a vanishing driving force for exciton dissociation. The dynamic formulation of the model is used to elucidate the characteristic time scales of charge generation. It is found that for low-offset systems, the pure diffusive times are considerably shorter than those associated with charge generation. It can therefore be concluded that when estimating domain sizes via exciton diffusion measurements, the assumption that excitons are instantaneously quenched at the donor-acceptor interface is only valid when a high driving force for exciton dissociation is present. The model is applied to the transient absorption dynamics of a PM6:Y6 blend. It is demonstrated that the charge generation dynamics are determined by the interplay between exciton diffusion and hole transfer kinetics, with an estimated Y6 domain size of 25nm, while interfacial charge transfer (CT) states separate rapidly into free charges.

Distinct APCs Explain the Cytokine Bias of α-Galactosylceramide Variants In Vivo

Abstract:α-Galactosylceramide represents a new class of vaccine adjuvants and immunomodulators that stimulate NKT cells to secrete Th1 and Th2 cytokines. Synthetic variants with short or unsaturated acyl chains exhibit a striking Th2 bias in vivo but no evidence of defect in TCR signaling or stimulation of NKT cells in vitro. Using cd1d1fl/fl mice, we demonstrated that distinct APC types explained the cytokine bias in vivo. Whereas NKT stimulation by α-Galactosylceramide required CD1d expression by dendritic cells (DCs), presentation of the Th2 variants was promiscuous and unaffected by DC-specific ablation of CD1d. This DC-independent stimulation failed to activate the feedback loop between DC IL-12 and NK cell IFN-γ, explaining the Th2 bias. Conversely, forced presentation of the Th2 variants by DC induced high IL-12. Thus, lipid structural variations that do not alter TCR recognition can activate distinct Th1 or Th2 cellular networks by changing APC targeting in vivo.
Theoretical Insight into the Internal Quantum Efficiencies of Polymer/C$_{60}$ and Polymer/SWNT Photovoltaic Devices

Abstract:The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of an organic photovoltaic device (OPV) is proportional to the number of free charge carriers generated and their conductivity, per absorbed photon. However, both the IQE and the quantities that determine it, for example, electron-hole binding, charge separation, electron-hole recombination, and conductivity, can only be inferred indirectly from experiments. Using density functional theory, we calculate the excited-state formation energy, charge transfer, and zero-bias conductance in the singlet ground state and triplet excited state across polymer/fullerene and polymer/single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) OPV donor/acceptor bulk heterojunctions. Specifically, we compare polythiophene (PT) and poly(3-methylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3MT) as donors and C$_{60}$ chains with (6,4), (6,5), and (10,5) SWNTs as acceptors. We find the conductivity increases substantially for both the excited triplet relative to the singlet ground state and for PT compared with P3MT due to the increased charge transfer and the resulting improvement in donor/acceptor level alignment. Similarly, the (6,4) SWNT, with a larger SWNT band gap and greater conductivity than fullerenes, provides the highest conductivities of 5 and 9\% of the theoretical maximum for electron and hole carriers, respectively. This work has important implications for both the optimization of polymer/SWNT bulk heterojunctions and the design of new OPV bulk heterojunctions in silico.

Abstract:A comprehensive description of the complicated dynamics of excited state evolution and charge transfer at the photochemical interface in dye-sensitized solar cells is crucial to understand the mechanism of converting solar photons to clean electricity, providing an informative basis for the future development of advanced organic materials. By selecting two triarylamine-based organic donor-acceptor dyes characteristic of the respective benzoic acid and cyanoacrylic acid anchors, in this paper we reveal stepwise excited state relaxations and multiple-state electron injections at a realistic titania/dye/electrolyte interface based upon ultrafast spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations show that the optically generated "hot" excited state of the dye molecules can undergo a significant conformational relaxation via multistage torsional motions, and thereby transform into an equilibrium quinonoid structure characteristic of a more planar conjugated backbone. A set of kinetic parameters derived from the target analysis of femtosecond transient absorption spectra have been utilized to estimate the electron injection yield, which is in good accord with the maximum of external quantum efficiencies.

Abstract:The great progress in organic photovoltaics (OPV) over the past few years has been largely achieved by the development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), with power conversion efficiencies now approaching 20%. To further improve device performance, loss mechanisms must be identified and minimized. Triplet states are known to adversely affect device performance, since they can form energetically trapped excitons on low-lying states that are responsible for non-radiative losses or even device degradation. Halogenation of OPV materials has long been employed to tailor energy levels and to enhance open circuit voltage. Yet, the influence on recombination to triplet excitons has been largely unexplored. Using the complementary spin-sensitive methods of photoluminescence detected magnetic resonance (PLDMR) and transient electron paramagnetic resonance (trEPR) corroborated by transient absorption and quantum-chemical calculations, we unravel exciton pathways in OPV blends employing the polymer donors PBDB-T, PM6 and PM7 together with NFAs Y6 and Y7. All blends reveal triplet excitons on the NFA populated via non-geminate hole back transfer and, in blends with halogenated donors, also by spin-orbit coupling driven intersystem crossing. Identifying these triplet formation pathways in all tested solar cell absorber films highlights the untapped potential for improved charge generation to further increase plateauing OPV efficiencies.

Abstract:The various loss mechanisms lead to low power conversion efficiency in organic photovoltaics. One of the main limitations is insufficient spectral coverage, to overcome this loss mechanism various methodologies were adopted. In this work, NS1 small molecule nanocrystals has been introduced in conventional P3HT:PC 70 BM binary system to study its effects on spectral response and photovoltaic performance. Introduction of NS1 nanocrystal improve cascaded energy level alignment between donor and acceptor semiconductors and provide well-aligned energy level, results in enhanced fill factor. The variation of V oc was seen with respect to polymer and NS1 ratio. Influence of optoelectronic properties of photoactive layer and photovoltaics parameters were analyzed detailly. At incorporation of optimized NS1 ratio, charge transfer process between P3HT and PC 70 BM improved and reduced recombination was seen. Composition-dependent PV parameter was investigated and discussed detailly. Host organic semiconductor nanocrystal in polymer photoactive layer favors the complementary optical absorption of forbidden absorption region of P3HT. This process was confirmed by external quantum efficiency and lowered leakage current. It is noted that UV visible spectrum trend was noted in the external quantum efficiency measurement. This work suggests that utilizing organic small molecule nanocrystal with optimized ratio will enable optical absorbance throughout the visible region. Further study would give enhanced performance attributed by widened spectral response.

Abstract:Some mechanisms of charge transport in organic semiconductors and organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells can be distinguished by their predicted change in activation energy for the current, Ea, versus applied field, F. Ea versus F is measured first in pure films of commercially available regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and in the same P3HT treated to reduce its charged defect density. The former shows a PooleFrenkel (PF)-like decrease in Ea at low F, which then plateaus at higher F. The low defect material does not exhibit PF behavior and Ea remains approximately constant. Upon addition of [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), however, both materials show a large increase in Ea and exhibit PF-like behavior over the entire field range. These results are explained with a previously proposed model of transport that considers both the localized random disorder in the energy levels and the long-range electrostatic fluctuations resulting from charged defects. Activation energy spectra in working OPV cells show that the current is injection-limited over most of the voltage range but becomes transport-limited, with a large peak in Ea, near the open circuit photovoltage. This causes a decrease in fill factor, which may be a general limitation in such solar cells.
Correlation of Nanomorphology with Structural and Spectroscopic Studies in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The nanomorphology of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends based on poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PTB7) blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) is systematically varied by using the volume fraction of the solvent additive 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) from 0 to 20 vol % in chlorobenzene to prepare organic solar cells (OSCs). Blends prepared without DIO forms large phase-separated domains of PC71BM which are suppressed on addition of 3 vol % DIO, resulting in improved nanoscale features. Addition of 20 vol % DIO results in a finer interconnected morphology along with increased roughness due to polymer aggregation, which contrasts with previous reports. With increase in addition of DIO the photoluminescence (PL) from the blend is reduced; however, a relative increase in PL from 750 nm onward is observed for blends with 20 vol % DIO. As quenching of the blend PL is related to the donor/acceptor interface, structural characterizations in real-space (microscopy) and k-space (scattering) are performed to unravel the nanomorphology and correlate it with photophysical and charge transport processes. Electron-transport length scales measured by scanning photocurrent microscopy are found to increase with the addition of up to 3 vol % DIO associated with the breakup of the large PC71BM agglomerates, while the hole-transport length is found to increase on adding DIO up to 20 vol % due to aggregation of polymer chains. Abstract:Donor–acceptor ionization energy offsets (ΔIE) from 0.45 to 0.6 eV maximize the quantum efficiency while minimizing the energy losses in organic solar cells. The minimal energy losses are due to interface state energies not limiting the open circuit voltage for ΔIE < 0.6 eV. The finding is generalized to 76 systems including ternary blends. Molecular engineering of organic semiconductors provides a virtually unlimited number of possible structures, yet only a handful of combinations lead to state‐of‐the‐art efficiencies in photovoltaic applications. Thus, design rules that guide material development are needed. One such design principle is that in a bulk heterojunction consisting of an electron donor and lower bandgap acceptor an offset (ΔIE) of at least 0.45 eV is required between both materials ionization energies to overcome energy level bending at the donor–acceptor interface, in turn maximizing the charge separation yield and the cell's internal quantum efficiency. The present work studies energy losses associated with ΔIE and, based on 24 blends, finds that losses are minimal up to a ΔIE of 0.6 eV. Electroluminescence spectroscopy shows that low energy losses are achieved when the charge transfer state energy (ECT) is similar to the acceptor's optical bandgap (EgA). Further ΔIE increase lowers ECT with respect to EgA, thus decreasing VOC. Within that 0.45–0.6 eV ΔIE sweet range, the fill factor FF, hence the power conversion efficiency, increases only marginally as the FF is often already close to maximal for ΔIE = 0.45 eV. The results are extended to 76 binary and ternary blends.
