Abstract:OBJECTIVES Depression is a prevalent outcome of traumatic experiences, such as combat and war captivity. This study explores the heterogeneity of changes over time and assesses the contribution of trauma exposure (combat vs. war captivity), hardiness, and social support for depression trajectories. METHODS Two groups of Israeli veterans were assessed in 1991, 2003, 2008, and 2015: 149 former prisoners-of-war (ex-POWs) and 107 combat veterans. Protective factors were evaluated in 1991. Group-based trajectory modeling was conducted to identify latent trajectories of change. RESULTS Four trajectories of "resiliency" (62.8%), "delayed onset" (25.1%), "exacerbation" (6.2%), and "chronicity" (5.9%) were found. The majority of the resilient group were combat veterans whereas the clinical groups consisted primarily of ex-POWs. Lower hardiness and social support were related to more deleterious trajectories. CONCLUSIONS Spirals of loss involving hardiness and social support, normative experiences, and contextual factors may present explanations for the various depression trajectories.

Abstract:Resumen Posttraumatic growth (PTG), the positive psychological transformations that follow traumatic events, affects both direct survivors (primary PTG) and their significant others (secondary PTG). Though primary and secondary PTG have been widely investigated in the literature, their long-term trajectories decades after a traumatic event, especially as survivors enter older age, remain largely uninvestigated. Furthermore, it remains contested whether PTG adds up to a monolithic construct or rather consists of relatively independent components. Addressing these issues, we assessed a sample of Israeli male veterans from the 1973 Yom Kippur war (N = 349) and their wives (N = 156) at three time points over the course of nearly three decades. Both the veterans (primary survivors) and their wives (secondary survivors) reported PTG relating to the veterans' experiences during the war and/or captivity. Latent growth mixture modeling was conducted to identify trajectories of PTG on the five subscales of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Long-term trajectories of PTG followed heterogeneous patterns of fluctuation over time and particularly as participants entered older age. On most subscales, decreasing PTG scores were evident, a trend that was more pronounced among the primary survivors than the secondary survivors as primary and secondary PTG fluctuate considerably in the long-term and seem to decrease as individuals enter older age. Furthermore, it would seem that PTG should not be considered a holistic concept but rather a conglomeration of positive changes. Implications of the findings are discussed within the context of limitations and potential intervening factors.

Abstract:This study assesses the resilience of Israeli society during the ongoing Israel‐Gaza conflict and pinpoints factors that influence this resilience in prolonged national crises. A longitudinal study was carried out with two surveys, both using the same questionnaire to gage societal, community, and individual resilience levels, along with hope, morale, distress, perceived threats, and government support. The initial survey was administered 5 days after the war escalated and the second 1 month later. The study's results reveal a decline in societal resilience over time. The regression analysis identified four major associations at both resilience measurement points. The key variables are community resilience and hope, both contributing positively. Attitudes towards government support (specifically being a government supporter vs. an opponent) also played a role. Additionally, there was a negative association with levels of religiosity, particularly distinguishing between ultra‐orthodox and secular individuals. In the temporal analysis predicting future resilience (from data at the first time point to predict resilience at the second time point), societal resilience at the first measurement was the strongest forecaster of its resilience at the second measurement. Additionally, the main continuous variable from the previous analysis, community resilience, continued to be an influential and positive forecaster in the time‐based analysis. The research suggests that the initial unifying effect of the conflict, similar to a "Rally around the flag" phenomenon, may be short‐lived. The study underlines the importance of community strength, hope, government support, and religious considerations in shaping societal resilience in the face of conflict.

Abstract:Background Russia's 2022 assault on Ukraine caused widespread destruction and displacement, affecting families. War and displacement heighten the risk of mental health issues, particularly when both parents and children are exposed to trauma. Resilience factors such as parental self-compassion and psychological flexibility might play a crucial role in moderating the symptoms. Objective This study aimed to investigate the mental health issues among parent-child refugees and assess their association with parental self-compassion and psychological flexibility. Method 50 parent-child refugees who arrived in Israel after fleeing the war in Ukraine participated in the study. Parents completed self-report questionnaires assessing mental health issues and resilience factors regarding them and their children. Results 56% of parents and 2% of children met the PTSD cutoff, while 56% of parents and 50% of children met the criteria for general psychological distress. Associations were found between children's PTSD, general distress, and those of their parents. High levels of parental psychological flexibility, self-kindness, and common humanity eliminated the association between parent and child symptoms. While in low and medium levels of these factors, children's PTSD and distress were linked to their parents. Conclusions Refugee parents and children mutually influence each other's mental health difficulties. Parental psychological flexibility and self-compassion may moderate these dynamics, offering potential assistance in managing and alleviating children's symptoms. Targeting these parental resilience factors in treatment can enhance outcomes, improving the overall mental well-being of both children and parents.

Abstract:Background: Results on the association between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) are inconsistent, and there may be unknown factors mediating or moderating this relationship. Identifying these factors could help in developing an intervention strategy for promoting PTG. However, few studies have examined relationships among PTSS, resilience, and PTG concurrently, and no study has investigated the effect of childhood trauma on these relationships in adulthood.Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the moderated mediating effect of childhood trauma on resilience and its associations with PTSS and PTG in adult victims of traumatic accidents or crimes. We hypothesized that resilience would mediate relationships between PTSS and PTG and that its mediating effects would differ depending on childhood trauma.Methods: We included adult victims of accidents or crimes referred to a university hospital or specialized support centre (n = 143). PTSS, resilience, childhood trauma, and PTG were measured with the following questionnaires: PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, and the Short Form of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, respectively.Results: The effect of PTSS on PTG was found to be fully mediated by resilience, and this mediating effect was moderated according to childhood trauma: the more childhood traumatic experiences, the greater the mediating effect of resilience was between PTSS and PTG. The effect of resilience on PTG was highest in the high childhood trauma group.Conclusion: Therapists treating individuals with psychological trauma should attempt to identify a history of childhood trauma and to evaluate resilience. Therapeutic approaches tailored according thereto may improve PTG among individuals with PTSS symptoms, especially those with high levels of childhood trauma.

Abstract:Objective To examine the multiple mediating roles of veterans' disclosure and intimacy as well as their wives' posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the relation between veterans' PTSD and wives' posttraumatic growth (PTG). Methods Self-report questionnaires were used to investigate 287 Israel veterans who fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and 166 wives of these veterans. A structure equation model analyzed the multiple mediating effects. Results Veterans' PTSD had a significant and positive effect on their wives' PTG before inclusion of the mediators. However, after inserting the mediators (i.e., veterans' disclosure and intimacy and wives' PTSD) the direct effect of veterans' PTSD on their wives' PTG became non-significant. In addition, veterans' PTSD had a 1-step indirect effect on their wives' PTG through wives' PTSD, and veterans' PTSD also had a 2-step indirect effect on their wives' PTSD through the path from veterans' disclosure to veterans' intimacy. Conclusion The results indicated that veterans' disclosure and intimacy as well as their wives' PTSD mediate the relation between veterans' PTSD and their wives' PTG. Abstract:Background: Resilience plays a crucial role in mental health promotion and prevention, and was shown to be more represented in individuals who exhibit high levels of extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. However, there is a lack of studies that comprehensively investigate the association between personality traits and resilience in Lebanon and Arab countries more broadly. The purpose of the present study was to complement the literature by investigating the direct and indirect effects between the five personality traits and resilience among a sample of Lebanese adults through the intermediary role of posttraumatic growth. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out between May and July 2022, and enrolled 387 participants, all aged above 18 years old and recruited from all Lebanon governorates. The questionnaire used included socio-demographic questions, and the following scales: Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) to assess resilience, post traumatic growth (PTG), and Big Five Inventory (BFI-2). The SPSS software v.25 was used for the statistical analysis. Results: Post-traumatic growth mediated the association between extraversion / agreeableness / conscientiousness and resilience. Higher extraversion / agreeableness / conscientiousness was significantly associated with more post-traumatic growth. Higher post-traumatic growth was significantly associated with more resilience. Extraversion, but not agreeableness and conscientiousness, was significantly and directly associated with more resilience. Conclusion: Findings suggest that fostering PTG in individuals who experience adversity can help promote their resilience. Hence, it could be beneficial to design and apply programs aiming at supporting PTG among people who experience stressful and traumatizing situations, to consequently help them increase their sense of resilience.

Abstract:Combat soldiers are exposed to various potentially traumatic events and face high risk of developing military-related psychopathology, such as depression, posttraumatic stress and grief (PTSS). However, a strong body of research shows that resilience is the default in the aftermath of trauma and indeed, many veterans do not develop high symptomatic levels. To explicate this inconsistency, the current study examined the associations among PTSS, resilience, and patterns of emotional-approach coping. A sample of 595 male combat veterans filled out questionnaires on trauma exposure, PTSS, depressive symptoms, resilience, and emotional-approach coping. Their data were analyzed using structural equation modeling path analysis. Participants reported high exposure to potentially traumatic events during service. Mean scores were high for resilience and relatively low for PTSS and depressive symptoms; 13% had a clinical level of posttraumatic stress disorder. Structural equation modeling revealed that emotional-approach coping strategies mediated the relationship between resilience and PTSS. However, emotional expression was associated with lower PTSS levels, whereas emotional processing was associated with higher PTSS levels. These results suggest that although emotional-approach coping was related to higher resilience, emotional expression (an intrapersonal coping strategy) might have a more positive effect than self-oriented emotional coping strategies. Providing veterans with supportive opportunities and a wider repertoire of emotional coping skills might enhance their well-being, reduce postservice emotional distress while not harming veterans' resilience levels.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder, a commonly researched mental health outcome associated with trauma, does not develop in the majority of survivors. More common trajectories of adaptation include resilience, and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The objectives of the current study were to: (1) describe posttrauma adaptation profiles in a sample of Israeli male military veterans (N = 448); and (2) to explore the protective factors that promote constructive PTG within two profiles of posttrauma adaptation.METHODS: The study used secondary data to estimate latent profile mixture models and a series of logistic regression analyses.RESULTS: Demographic controls, combat related variables, endorsement of coping strategies, and reports of improvement in social support were not significant predictors of constructive growth in the resilient class. However, those in the struggling growth subset of the sample who reported improvement in perceived social support increased the odds of reaching constructive growth.CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the importance of tailored clinical interventions that account for more complex profiles of posttrauma adaptation; and further, provide evidence that adaptation takes place over time. Finally, these findings call for future research to continue to explore the quality of PTG and the contexts in which protective factors promote positive adaptation.
Unveiling factors shaping distress levels over 2.5 years of enduring adversity

Abstract:In the face of global adversities such as pandemics, military conflicts, and socio-political unrest, the resilience and well-being of populations can be severely tested. This study examines the fluctuating levels of distress within the Israeli population over a period of 2.5 years, encompassing events like the COVID-19 pandemic and various socio-political and security crises. Utilizing a quasi-longitudinal design, data were collected at thirteen time-points, mirroring the demographic makeup of the Israeli Jewish adult population. Measures of psychological distress, societal and individual resilience, hope, morale, and perceived danger were assessed, alongside demographic variables. Statistical analyses included ANOVA and stepwise regression models. Distress levels displayed significant oscillations in response to adverse events. High distress was noted during the latter stages of the study, particularly following a major security incident on October 7, 2023. The regression analyses identified morale and perceived danger as consistent important associations with distress, with individual resilience also inversely related across all time points. The study reveals the dynamic nature of psychological distress in relation to a range of adversities. Morale emerged as a key buffer against distress, whereas perceived danger was a significant stressor, especially during acute- existential threats. These findings have important implications for mental health interventions and policy-making aimed at fostering resilience and mitigating distress in crisis conditions.

Abstract:The unprecedented events on October 7 th in Israel, characterized by little actual and perceived control over the sources of the stress, have affected virtually every household in Israel, either due to the economic and social consequences of the ensuing war or experiencing the loss of relatives and friends. The current study examined the association between traumatic loss of close friends/relatives and resilience during the initial stages of the Iron-Swords war and explored the moderating role of coping strategies for this link. Data were collected from 286 participants (age range 19-82) who completed online scales assessing loss, resilience, and coping strategies during the first weeks of the Iron-Swords war. Results demonstrated a negative association between emotion-focused coping and resilience, as well as a positive association between problem-focused coping and resilience. Moreover, coping strategies moderated the loss-resilience link, which was significant only for individuals reporting low levels of both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping. Our findings support the claim that relying on at least one dominant coping strategy (i.e., problem-focused coping/emotional-focused coping/both) is efficient to reserve resilience levels at times of adversity. The findings of the current study, based on data collected in the first weeks of the Iron-Swords war, highlight the value of different coping styles in preserving individual resilience as a protective factor against stress during adversity.

Abstract:A total of 107 patients were treated for unifocal presentations of Hodgkin's disease between 1947 and 1969. Survival figures and incidence of new manifestations were compared for 62 patients staged clinically vs. 45 staged after lymphography. Although the five-year results were statistically better for the lymphogram group (88 vs. 69%), the overall incidence of new manifestations could not be predicted by lymphography. Positive findings on laparotomy in 27 patients were correlated with the patterns of new manifestations in the lymphogram and clinical series.
Building Light Weight CORBA Based Middleware for the CAN Bus Systems

Abstract:The software components of embedded control systems get extremely complex as they are designed into distributed sys- tems consisting of a large number of inexpensive microcontrollers interconnected by low-bandwidth real-time networks such as the controller area network (CAN). While recently emerging middleware technologies such as CORBA and DCOM address the com- plexity of distributed programming, they cannot be directly applied to distributed control system design due to their excessive re- source demand and inadequate communication models. In this paper, we propose a CORBA -based middleware design for CAN- based distributed embedded control systems. Our design goal is to minimize its resource need and make it support group communica- tion without losing the IDL (interface definition language) level compliance to the OMG standards. To achieve this, we develop a transport protocol on the CAN and a group communication scheme based on the well-known publisher/subscriber model. The proto- col effectively realizes subject-based addressing and supports anonymous publisher/subscriber communication. We also customize the method invocation and message passing protocol, referred to as the general inter-ORB protocol (GIOP), of CORBA so that CORBA method invocations are efficiently serviced on a low-bandwidth network such as the CAN. This customization includes packed data encoding and variable-length integer encoding for compact representation of IDL data types. We have implemented our CORBA -based middleware on the mArx real-time operating system we have developed at Seoul National University. Our experiments clearly demonstrate that it is feasible to use CORBA in developing distributed embedded control sys- tems possessing severe resource limitations. Our design clearly demonstrates that it is feas ible to use a CORBA -based middleware in developing distributed embedded systems on real-time networks possessing severe resource limitations.

Abstract:Occupational therapy is associated with all means and stages of rehabilitation, despite being considered a healthcare field in the Czech Republic. In the European countries and worldwide, the trend in recent years suggests the important role of occupational therapy not only in healthcare but also in the social sphere. Occupational therapy is an integral part of rehabilitation. Its aim is to preserve or restore a person’s abilities through the use of meaningful activities and employment. Meaningful activities are selected individually for each individual of any age category according to the importance so that they can manage their routine daily living and the occupational, educational, social, leisure and recreational activities that are essential to them. Occupational therapists diagnose the functional condition of an individual, including the diagnosis of their functional abilities to manage activities of daily living, cognitive functions in terms of activities of daily living, motor skills and the function of the upper extremities, prevocational rehabilitation for the purpose of occupational and educational rehabilitation, diagnosis of leisure activities that an individual is able to perform, and diagnosis of environmental factors in relation to facilitators and barriers. Based on the results of the examinations and the diagnosis, the occupational therapist designs a shortand long-term occupational therapy plan and recommends customized occupational therapy in order to achieve the maximum possible quality of life. Occupational therapy in healthcare is conducted as prescribed by a doctor.

Abstract:This study examined the roles of resilience and willingness to seek psychological help in influencing Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) among 173 emerging adults who experienced parental loss during their school years. A positive relationship was found between resilience, the willingness to seek psychological help, and PTG. Participants who endured loss over five years prior manifested increased PTG (New-Possibilities, Spiritual Change, and Appreciation of Life sub-scales) relative to those with more recent losses. The multiple regression model was notable, accounting for 33% of the variance in PTG. Both resilience and the willingness to seek psychological help assistance significantly predicted PTG, surpassing other predictors in the model. It is worth noting that the type of loss, whether sudden or anticipated, did not alter PTG levels. In essence, this study underscores the enduring positive psychological impact of parental loss on emerging adults, highlighting the critical need for comprehensive psychological resources and support for such individuals.

Abstract:Traumatic exposure can result in acute stress symptoms in the immediate aftermath and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms that persist beyond the initial weeks. Both short-term and long-term reactions require research and clinical attention. There is considerable evidence for age differences in PTSD, and older adults frequently present lower rates of PTSD compared to young adults. Much less is known concerning age differences in acute reaction or the extent to which age differences in PTSD are affected by age differences in acute stress. The current study examined acute stress and PTSD symptoms among young and older adult Israelis during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war. A web-based sample of 428 participants (mean age = 48.36 ± 16.29) completed retrospective accounts of pre-war psychological distress and acute stress in the first week of the war and further reported current PTSD symptoms. Rates of elevated levels of acute stress symptoms and probable PTSD were significantly higher among young adults (24.8% and 42.8%, respectively) compared to their older counterparts (3.7% and 13.7%, respectively). Age differences in probable PTSD remained significant even after controlling for other demographics, traumatic exposure, pre-war psychological distress, and acute stress symptoms. These preliminary findings further attest to the impressive resilience manifested by older adults during wartime. Moreover, as age differences in probable PTSD were not fully explained by acute reactions, unique mechanisms may be mobilized by older adults to cope with warfare trauma in the short- and long term.

Abstract:The aim of our study was to establish colour Doppler‐assisted duplex imaging (CDDI)‐criteria to predict an angiographic internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis of at least 70%, according to the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) and European Carotid Surgery Trialists (ECST) methods of measurement. In the following, we describe the findings in 79 patients who were screened for carotid endarterectomy by CDDI and further evaluated by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). In 158 carotid arteries, 107 stenoses of > 30% and nine occlusions were found. Receiver operator characteristic graphs were constructed in order to calculate sensitivities and specificities of the assessment by CDDI in the prediction of high‐grade stenoses determined by angiography. Optimal cut‐off points were defined by highest accuracy which reflects the combination of high sensitivity and specificity. The critical index of a high‐grade ICA stenosis according to the ECST method could be predicted with an accuracy greater than 90% by a systolic peak velocitiy of 1.25 m/s or an area reduction by CDDI of 70%. Corresponding values, 1.6 m/s and 80% area reduction, predicted the stenosis indexes according to the NASCET method less reliably, with accuracies of between 80% and 90%. Flow velocity criterion was slightly less accurate than the area reduction criterion by CDDI. Finally, double‐blind evaluation performed by two readers per examination modality showed that the measurement of area reduction in CDDI is at least as reliable as stenosis indexes according to ECST and NASCET methods.
