Abstract:Abstract. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in building construction and management is becoming increasingly common. Nevertheless, the generation of BIM models for already existing buildings is still an operation requiring a significant human effort. The generation of a geometrically reliable and complete BIM model requires geometric information on all the building parts. Since acquiring such information with a unique acquisition tool is quite hard, integration of data acquired with different acquisition tools and platforms is strongly recommended in order to obtain a geometrically complete 3D description of the building. This work presents a procedure for integrating data acquired with Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and Smartphone with LiDAR, showing the obtained results on two case studies, two buildings in the campus of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Finally, a BIM model have been successfully generated in both the case studies by using the Blender software.

Abstract:Abstract. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) frequently used for obtaining 2D or 3D data acquisition. Meanwhile, Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS) are used for obtaining only 3D data acquisition. However if both are integrated, they were able to produce a more accurate data. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible integration of point clouds obtained by TLS with UAV images at T06 FBES building through the aerial survey where the roof is scanned and ground survey which scans the facades‟ building. Topcon GLS 2000 and DJI Inspire 1 UAV were used to acquire the data at the field. The aerial data and ground data were processed using Pix4D and Scanmaster respectively. The data integration process is done by converting both point clouds into the same coordinate system and then by aligning the same points of both points clouds in Cloud Compare. For verification purposes, dimensional survey was done and there are several distances were taken from the study area to validate the accuracy assessment. The result of residuals between the dimension survey and integration is 0.183 m which is below 1 meter. The result of this study is a 3D model of UTM T06 FBES building based on the point cloud accuracy in cm level. To conclude, the integration between these two methods can be implemented to produce an accurate 3D model.

Abstract:Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing technology efficiently produces accurate 3D geometry of the forest structure in the form of point cloud data. Individual tree parameters can be measured more effectively using LiDAR technology. LiDAR can penetrate through the dense canopies and produce adequate information of each tree for forest inventory and mensuration. The main objective of this case study is to bring out the potential of integrating (Terrestrial Laser Scanner) TLS and (Airborne Laser Scanner) ALS to compensate for each other limitations and to generate a complete and accurate 3D model of the forest structures. Tree height and DBH were measured from TLS, ALS, and Integrated point cloud data. It is observed that TLS and ALS integrated point cloud data have shown more promising results when compared to individual LiDAR technologies. Both technologies are complementary to each other. We found that integration of ground perspective LiDAR and above canopy LiDAR has excellent potential in producing plot-level completeness of information which can be used for AGB calculations and other forest parameters extraction. The ALS and TLS datasets used in this case study are a part of the SilviLaser 2021 Benchmark Dataset acquired in the Lower Austria region.

Abstract:Abstract. Three-dimensional (3D) models of historical buildings are created for documentation and virtual realization of them. Laser scanning and photogrammetry are extensively used to perform for these aims. The selection of the method that will be used in threedimensional modelling study depends on the scale and shape of the object, and also applicability of the method. Laser scanners are high cost instruments. However, the cameras are low cost instruments. The off-the-shelf cameras are used for taking the photogrammetric images. The camera is imaging the object details by carrying on hand while the laser scanner makes ground based measurement. Laser scanner collect high density spatial data in a short time from the measurement area. On the other hand, image based 3D (IB3D) measurement uses images to create 3D point cloud data. The image matching and the creation of the point cloud can be done automatically. Historical buildings include more complex details. Thus, all details cannot be measured by terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) due to the blocking the details with each others. Especially, the artefacts which have complex shapes cannot be measured in full details. They cause occlusion on the point cloud model. However it is possible to record photogrammetric images and creation IB3D point cloud for these areas. Thus the occlusion free 3D model is created by the integration of point clouds originated from the TLS and photogrammetric images. In this study, usability of laser scanning in conjunction with image based modelling for creation occlusion free three-dimensional point cloud model of historical building was evaluated. The IB3D point cloud was created in the areas that could not been measured by TLS. Then laser scanning and IB3D point clouds were integrated in the common coordinate system. The registration point clouds were performed with the iterative closest point (ICP) and georeferencing methods. Accuracy of the registration was evaluated by convergency and its standard deviations for the ICP and residuals on the control points for the georeferencing method.

Abstract:A multiple terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) integration approach is proposed for the fine surveying and 3D modeling of ancient wooden architecture in an ancient building complex of Wudang Mountains, which is located in very steep surroundings making it difficult to access. Three-level TLS with a scalable measurement distance and accuracy is presented for data collection to compensate for data missed because of mutual sheltering and scanning view limitations. A multi-scale data fusion approach is proposed for data registration and filtering of the different scales and separated 3D data. A point projection algorithm together with point cloud slice tools is designed for fine surveying to generate all types of architecture maps, such as plan drawings, facade drawings, section drawings, and doors and windows drawings. The section drawings together with slicing point cloud are presented for the deformation analysis of the building structure. Along with fine drawings and laser scanning data, the 3D models of the ancient architecture components are built for digital management and visualization. Results show that the proposed approach can achieve fine surveying and 3D documentation of the ancient architecture within 3 mm accuracy. In addition, the defects of scanning view and mutual sheltering can overcome to obtain the complete and exact structure in detail.

Abstract:Modern technologies are commonly used to inventory different architectural or industrial objects (especially cultural heritage objects and sites) to generate architectural documentation or 3D models. The Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) method is one of the standard technologies researchers investigate for accurate data acquisition and processing required for architectural documentation. The processing of TLS data to generate high-resolution architectural documentation is a multi-stage process that begins with point cloud registration. In this step, it is a common practice to identify corresponding points manually, semi-manually or automatically. There are several challenges for the TLS point cloud processing in the data registration process: correct spatial distribution, marking of control points, automation, and robustness analysis. This is particularly important when large, complex heritage sites are investigated, where it is impossible to distribute marked control points. On the other hand, when orientating multi-temporal data, there is also the problem of corresponding reference points. For this reason, it is necessary to use automatic tie-point detection methods. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the quality and completeness of the TLS registration process using 2D raster data in the form of spherical images and Affine Hand-crafted and Learned-based detectors in the multi-stage TLS point cloud registration as test data; point clouds were used for the historic 17th-century cellars of the Royal Castle in Warsaw without decorative structures, two baroque rooms in the King John III Palace Museum in Wilanów with decorative elements, ornaments and materials on the walls and flat frescoes, and two modern test fields, narrow office, and empty shopping mall. The extended Structure-from-Motion was used to determine the tie points for the complete TLS registration and reliability analysis. The evaluation of detectors demonstrates that for the test sites exhibiting rich textures and numerous ornaments, a combination of AFAST, ASURF, ASIFT, SuperGlue and LoFTR can be effectively employed. For the point cloud registration of less textured buildings, it is advisable to use AFAST/ASIFT. The robust method for point cloud registration exhibits comparable outcomes to the conventional target-based and Iterative Closest Points methods.

Abstract:Both Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS) are important techniques for surveying and mapping. UAV equipment is commonly used to collect 2D or 3D data acquisition. Meanwhile, TLS equipment is used for obtaining only 3D data acquisition. However, if both are integrated, they were able to produce more accurate data. Multi-sensor data fusion helps overcome the limitations of a single sensor and enables a complete 3D model for the structure and better object classification. This study focuses on studying the combination of UAV and TLS technologies to collect, process data, and create the complete point cloud between two point clouds of the high building in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province to establish a 3D model at LoD 3 detail level, with high accuracy. FARO FOCUS3D X130 and DJI Phantom 4 RTK equipments were used to acquire the data in the field. The aerial and ground data were processed using FARO SCENE 2019 and Agisoft PhotoScan software, respectively. The data integration process is done by converting both point clouds into the same coordinate system and then by aligning the same points of both points clouds in Cloud Compare. The result of this study is a 3D model at LoD 3 detail level of the high building based on the point cloud accuracy in centimeter level. The combined use of UAV and TLS technologies has proven to be possible to create a highly accurate 3D model, at the 1:500 scale of urban areas according to current standards.

Abstract:Three-dimensional point cloud data is a new form of three-dimensional collection, which not only contains the geometric topology information of the object, but also has high simplicity and flexibility. In this paper, the air-ground multi-source data fusion technology is used to study the fine reconstruction of the 3D scene: based on the 3D laser scanning laser point cloud, the 3D spatial information of the ground visible objects is obtained, and the orthophoto obtained by the drone aerial photography is assisted, Obtain the three-dimensional space information of the top of the ground feature, and the ground three-dimensional laser scanner can quickly obtain the three-dimensional surface information of the building facade, ground, and trees. Due to the complex structure of the building and the occlusion of spatial objects, sub-station scanning is required when acquiring point cloud data. This article uses the Sino-German Energy Conservation Center Building of Shenyang Jianzhu University as the research area, using drone tilt photography technology and ground lidar technology to integrate. During the experiment, the field industry adopted the UAV image acquisition strategy of “automatic shooting of regular routes, supplemented by manual shooting of areas of interest”; in the field industry, the method of “manual coarse registration and ICP algorithm fine registration” The example results show that the ground 3D laser point cloud air-ground image fusion 3D modeling effect proposed in this paper is better and the quality is greatly improved, which makes up for the ground 3D laser scanning. In point cloud modeling, a large number of holes are insufficient due to occlusion and missing top information.

Abstract:As a revolutionary technology, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is attracting increasing interest in the fields of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), with outstanding advantages, such as highly automated, non-contact operation and efficient large-scale sampling capability. TLS has extended a new approach to capturing extremely comprehensive data of the construction environment, providing detailed information for further analysis. This paper presents a systematic review based on scientometric and qualitative analysis to summarize the progress and the current status of the topic and to point out promising research efforts. To begin with, a brief understanding of TLS is provided. Following the selection of relevant papers through a literature search, a scientometric analysis of papers is carried out. Then, major applications are categorized and presented, including (1) 3D model reconstruction, (2) object recognition, (3) deformation measurement, (4) quality assessment, and (5) progress tracking. For widespread adoption and effective use of TLS, essential problems impacting working effects in application are summarized as follows: workflow, data quality, scan planning, and data processing. Finally, future research directions are suggested, including: (1) cost control of hardware and software, (2) improvement of data processing capability, (3) automatic scan planning, (4) integration of digital technologies, (5) adoption of artificial intelligence.

A Wavelet Based Algorithm For Dtm Extraction From Airborne Laser Scanning Data

Abstract:The automatic extraction of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from point clouds acquired by airborne laser scanning (ALS) equipment remains a problem in ALS data filtering nowadays. Many filter algorithms have been developed to remove object points and outliers, and to extract DTM automatically. However, it is difficult to filter in areas where few points have identical morphological or geological features that can present the bare earth. Especially in sloped terrain covered by dense vegetation, points representing bare earth are often identified as noisy data below ground. To extract terrain surface in these areas, a new algorithm is proposed. First, the point clouds are cut into profiles based on a scan line segmentation algorithm. In each profile, a ID filtering procedure is determined from the wavelet theory, which is superior in detecting high frequency discontinuities. After combining profiles from different directions, an interpolated and data representing DTM is generated. In order to evaluate the performance of this new approach, we applied it to the data set used in the ISPRS filter test in 2003. 2 samples containing mostly vegetation on slopes have been processed by the proposed algorithm. It can be seen that it filtered most of the objects like vegetation and buildings in sloped area, and smoothed the hilly mountain to be more close to its real terrain surface.

Abstract:Abstract. The term “3D building models” is used in relation to the CityGML models and building information modelling. Reconstruction and modelling of 3D building objects in urban areas becomes a common trend and finds a wide spectrum of utilitarian applications. The paper presents the quality assessment of two multifaceted 3D building models, which were obtained from two open-access databases: Polish national Geoportal (accuracy in LOD 2 standard) and Trimble SketchUp Warehouse (accuracy in LOD 2 standard with information about architectural details of façades). The Geoportal 3D models were primary created based on the airborne laser scanning data (density 12 pts/sq. m, elevation accuracy to 0.10 m) collected during Informatic System for Country Protection against extraordinary hazards project. The testing was performed using different validation low-altitude photogrammetric datasets: RIEGL LMS-Q680i airborne laser scanning point cloud (min. density 25 pts/sq. m and height accuracy 0.03 m), and image-based Phase One iXU-RS 1000 point cloud (average accuracy in the horizontal and in the vertical plane is respectively to 0.015 m and 0.030 m). The visual comparison, heat maps with the function of the signed distance, and histograms in predefined ranges were used to evaluate the quality and accuracy of 3D building models. The aspect of error sources that occurred during the modelling process was also discussed.

Abstract:The dynamic development of modern technologies allows the construction of devices that change the current approach to the design and inventory of buildings. The Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) of large-scale objects improves the existing state's documentation and the building reconstruction design phase, especially in the interdisciplinary Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector(AEC) approach. Understanding these applications' wide range of technical requirements and considerations is crucial in projects. This research aims to investigate the validity and quality of using TLS for the structural expertise of a metro tunnel. The analysis exploits and focuses on laser scanning technology applications for testing the analysis accuracy of monolithic concrete walls in a building of extended length. The study results indicate that the technological advancement in Building Information Modelling (BIM) presents extraordinary opportunities for AEC professionals to use laser scanning in a holistic, collaborative workflow based on 3D model-based design and data quality.

Abstract:This article examines the potential of low-cost LiDAR technology for 3D modeling and assessment of the degradation of historic buildings, using a section of the Koszalin city walls in Poland as a case study. Traditional terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) offers high accuracy but is expensive. The study assessed whether more accessible LiDAR options, such as those integrated with mobile devices such as the Apple iPad Pro, can serve as viable alternatives. This study was conducted in two phases—first assessing measurement accuracy and then assessing degradation detection—using tools such as the FreeScan Combo scanner and the Z+F 5016 IMAGER TLS. The results show that, while low-cost LiDAR is suitable for small-scale documentation, its accuracy decreases for larger, complex structures compared to TLS. Despite these limitations, this study suggests that low-cost LiDAR can reduce costs and improve access to heritage conservation, although further development of mobile applications is recommended.

Abstract:Nowadays, static, mobile, terrestrial, and airborne laser scanning technologies have become familiar data sources for engineering work, especially in the area of land surveying. The diversity of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data applications thanks to the accuracy and the high point density in addition to the 3D data processing high speed allow laser scanning to occupy an advanced position among other spatial data acquisition technologies. Moreover, the unmanned aerial vehicle drives the airborne scanning progress by solving the flying complexity issues. However, before the employment of the laser scanning technique, it is unavoidable to assess the accuracy of the scanner being used under different circumstances. The key to success is determined by the correct selection of suitable scanning tools for the project. In this paper, the terrestrial LiDAR data is tested and used for several laser scanning projects having diverse goals and typology, e.g., road deformation monitoring, building facade modelling, road modelling, and stockpile modelling and volume measuring. The accuracy of direct measurement on the LiDAR point cloud is estimated as 4mm which may open the door widely for LiDAR data to play an essential role in survey work applications.

Abstract:Abstract. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is a modern method of spatial data acquisition. The most common application of this method is large scale topographic mapping. Point clouds obtained with laser scanning contain all necessary data for producing topographic maps and plans. One of the territories, where TLS is particularly important, is oil and gas deposits. Built-up areas of oil and gas deposits are represented with complicated industrial objects. On the one hand, introduction of TLS method for surveying of these areas significantly speeds up field surveying works. On the other hand, dense point clouds of built-up areas slow down the process of mapping due to the necessity to filter extra data. To hasten the process of mapping special algorithms of feature extraction from point cloud and techniques of compiling plan and maps are being developed. Nonetheless, majority of developed algorithms can work fine for point clouds of high uniform density where the number of objects is not large. For built-up areas developed algorithms can be not applicable. The basic steps of compiling a topographic plan are described. It is discussed which object types can be automatically extracted and vectorized in built-up areas of oil and gas deposits. The examples of manual point cloud vectorization are given.
The possibility of using close-range photogrammetry in the inventory of historic complex basements - case study

Abstract:In the community, historical objects play the role of witness to past history. Due to that fact, it is necessary to preserve and reconstruct cultural heritage objects and sites for the future generation. Image-based photogrammetric methods have been widely applied for this purpose for many years. Nowadays, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS; range-based method), due to its advantages such as speed of data acquisition, high accuracy and independence from light conditions, is increasingly used in the inventory of complex historic buildings. Despite this, the development of modern image processing methods, i.e. Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS), has meant that close-range photogrammetric techniques are still competitive with TLS. The article aimed to present the possibility of using close-range photogrammetry to inventory historic complex basements. Laser scanning was performed as part of the measurements (with a Z+F 5006h scanner), and a series of close-range images were taken with a full-frame non-metric Canon 5D Mark II camera. Based on the combined SfM and MVS methods, a dense point cloud was generated, which in a subsequent data processing step served as the basis for generating 3D models and cross-sections. To assess the quality of the generated documentation, the TLS data were used as ground-truth data, and the shape and cross-section mapping quality was compared. It is evident from the investment presented that the use of close-range photogrammetry methods makes it possible to generate documentation that meets the requirements of architectural studies and similar shape accuracy for historic complex basements.

Abstract:The terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) is an effective tool to generate geometric models of existing buildings and other structures. TLS has shown great potential in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. High standards for accuracy and density of point clouds are essential for producing accurate models. Some requirements have been developed for evaluating the deliverability of collected point clouds. However, practical guidelines for collecting qualified data may not always be available in every scenario. Consequently, either over-dense point clouds are collected to cover as large a range as possible, a conservative approach that results in wasted time in data collection and processing, or sparse point clouds are collected to reduce data collection time, which results in missing data. The present work proposes a methodology to calculate the effective scan range based on rigorous mathematical reasoning with straightforward equations considering all the neighboring points on the target plane. Using the proposed workflow, appropriate angular resolution can be quickly estimated to balance the scanning range and the collected data size in site surveying. Two case studies were carried out to investigate the feasibility of the proposed methodology. The results show that the point clouds within the suggested effective scanning range are highly consistent with expectations, which indicates that the proposed methodology is feasible and reliable.

Abstract:Laser scanner technology swiftly captures point cloud data of objects and their surrounding environments, proving extensive applications across various sectors. However, it often encounters challenges related to incomplete point clouds due to occlusion from stationary objects. This paper presents a terrestrial laser scanning system based on a 3-SPR (3-Spherical Joint-Active Prismatic Joint-Rotating Joint) parallel mechanism (TLS-PM), specifically designed to enhance scanning coverage during single-station measurements, reduce positioning and workload during multi-station measurements, and mitigate point cloud gaps caused by occlusions. Initially, a simulation model of the TLS-PM was developed, and both forward and inverse kinematic analysis were performed. Subsequently, the workspace was computed for different spherical joints using this model. An introduction to the TLS-PM's error and the registration algorithm employed was then provided. Finally, through comparative analysis of simulations and experimental results, the device's measurement accuracy and its capability to resist occlusions were validated. Additionally, the TLS-PM's anti-occlusion performance was evaluated under various scenarios in a simulated setting. The experimental results demonstrate that, when employing the same conventional point cloud processing algorithms, the TLS-PM significantly improves the background scanning coverage.
