Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine whether early-implanted, long-term cochlear implant (CI) users display delays in verbal short-term and working memory capacity when processes related to audibility and speech production are eliminated.DESIGN: Twenty-three long-term CI users and 23 normal-hearing controls each completed forward and backward digit span tasks under testing conditions that differed in presentation modality (auditory or visual) and response output (spoken recall or manual pointing).RESULTS: Normal-hearing controls reproduced more lists of digits than the CI users, even when the test items were presented visually and the responses were made manually via touchscreen response.CONCLUSIONS: Short-term and working memory delays observed in CI users are not due to greater demands from peripheral sensory processes such as audibility or from overt speech-motor planning and response output organization. Instead, CI users are less efficient at encoding and maintaining phonological representations in verbal short-term memory using phonological and linguistic strategies during memory tasks.

Neurocognitive risk in children with cochlear implants

Abstract:Importance: Children who receive a cochlear implant (CI) for early severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss may achieve age-appropriate spoken language skills not possible before implantation. Despite these advances, reduced access to auditory experience may have downstream effects on fundamental neurocognitive processes for some children with CIs. Objective: To determine the relative risk (RR) of clinically significant executive functioning deficits in children with CIs compared with children with normal hearing (NH). Design, setting, and participants: In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 73 children at a hospital-based clinic who received their CIs before 7 years of age and 78 children with NH, with average to above average mean nonverbal IQ scores, were recruited in 2 age groups: preschool age (age range, 3-5 years) and school age (age range, 7-17 years). No children presented with other developmental, cognitive, or neurologic diagnoses. Interventions: Parent-reported checklist measures of executive functioning were completed during psychological testing sessions. Main outcomes and measures: Estimates of the RR of clinically significant deficits in executive functioning (≥1 SDs above the mean) for children with CIs compared with children with NH were obtained based on 2 parent-reported child behavior checklists of everyday problems with executive functioning. Results: In most domains of executive functioning, children with CIs were at 2 to 5 times greater risk of clinically significant deficits compared with children with NH. The RRs for preschoolers and school-aged children, respectively, were greatest in the areas of comprehension and conceptual learning (RR [95% CI], 3.56 [1.71-7.43] and 6.25 [2.64-14.77]), factual memory ( 4.88 [1.58-15.07] and 5.47 [2.03-14.77]), attention (3.38 [1.03-11.04] and 3.13 [1.56-6.26]), sequential processing (11.25 [1.55-81.54] and 2.44 [1.24-4.76]), working memory (4.13 [1.30-13.06] and 3.64 [1.61-8.25] for one checklist and 1.77 [0.82-3.83] and 2.78 [1.18-6.51] for another checklist), and novel problem-solving (3.93 [1.50-10.34] and 3.13 [1.46-6.67]). No difference between the CI and NH samples was found for visual-spatial organization (2.63 [0.76-9.03] and 1.04 [0.45-2.40] on one checklist and 2.86 [0.98-8.39] for school-aged children on the other checklist). Conclusions and relevance: A large proportion of children with CIs are at risk for clinically significant deficits across multiple domains of executive functioning, a rate averaging 2 to 5 times that of children with NH for most domains. Screening for risk of executive functioning deficits should be a routine part of the clinical evaluation of all children with deafness and CIs.

Abstract:To investigate differences in speech, language, and neurocognitive functioning in normal hearing (NH) children and deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) using anomalous sentences. Anomalous sentences block the use of downstream predictive coding during speech recognition, allowing for investigation of rapid phonological coding and executive functioning.Methods: Extreme groups were extracted from samples of children with CIs and NH peers (ages 9 to 17) based on the 7 highest and 7 lowest scores on the Harvard-Anomalous sentence test (Harvard-A). The four groups were compared on measures of speech, language, and neurocognitive functioning.Results: The 7 highest-scoring CI users and the 7 lowest-scoring NH peers did not differ in Harvard-A scores but did differ significantly on measures of neurocognitive functioning. Compared to low-performing NH peers, highperforming children with CIs had significantly lower nonword repetition scores but higher nonverbal IQ scores, greater verbal WM capacity, and excellent EF skills related to inhibition, shifting attention/mental flexibility and working memory updating.Discussion: High performing deaf children with CIs are able to compensate for their sensory deficits and weaknesses in automatic phonological coding of speech by engaging in a slow effortful mode of information processing involving inhibition, working memory and executive functioning.
Language processing fluency and verbal working memory in prelingually deaf long-term cochlear implant users: A pilot study

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Verbal working memory (WM) is more strongly correlated with spoken language skills in prelingually deaf, early-implanted cochlear implant (CI) users than in normal-hearing (NH) peers, suggesting that CI users access WM in order to support and compensate for their slower, more effortful spoken language processing. This pilot study tested the feasibility and validity of a dual-task method for establishing the causal role of WM in basic language processing (lexical access speed) in samples of 9 CI users (ages 8-26 years) and 9 NH peers.METHODS: Participants completed tests of lexical access speed (rapid automatized picture naming test and lexical decision test) under two administration conditions: a standard condition and a dual-task WM condition requiring participants to hold numerals in WM during completion of the lexical access speed tests.RESULTS: CI users showed more dual-task interference (decline in speed during the WM condition compared to the standard condition) than NH peers, indicating that their lexical access speed was more dependent on engagement of WM resources. Furthermore, dual-task interference scores were significantly correlated with several measures of speed-based executive functioning (EF), consistent with the hypothesis that the dual-task method reflects the involvement of EF in language processing.CONCLUSION: These pilot study results support the feasibility and validity of the dual-task WM method for investigating the influence of WM in the basic language processing of CI users. Preliminary findings indicate that CI users are more dependent on the use of WM as a compensatory strategy during slow-effortful basic language processing than NH peers.

Swarming motility in undomesticated Bacillus subtilis

Abstract:Swarming motility was identified and characterized in an undomesticated strain of Bacillus subtilis. Rapid surface migration was preceded by a cell density‐dependent lag period, which could be eliminated if actively swarming cells were used as the inoculum. The leading edge of the swarm was characterized by multicellular rafts of highly flagellated cells. Flagellum biosynthesis and surfactant production were required for swarming. Swarming was not found in any of several standard laboratory strains. Laboratory strains are characteristically unable to produce surfactant, but such a strain remained unable to swarm even when surfactant was provided by extracellular complementation. We conclude that robust swarming is a feature of undomesticated B. subtilis and that this behaviour has been lost or attenuated in laboratory strains through the accumulation of multiple genetic defects.

Abstract:A new molecular receptor (1) for ammonium recognition has been designed and constructed by using only carbon atoms. This molecular receptor can co-exist in two different isoenergetic conformations but, upon complexation, the conformers are no longer isoenergetic, and a basket-shaped conformation becomes clearly more stable. The pre-organised tetrahedral structure of this basket-shaped molecule favours the complexation of ammonium ions by N-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions with the four phenyl groups of the host. A similar behaviour is not observed in a similar, but less pre-organised, reference molecule. ESI-MS competition experiments show that 1 is able to bind NH(4)(+) over K(+) selectively. This is the first example of a neutral molecular receptor that shows a remarkable NH(4)(+)/K(+) selectivity. DFT-calculations provide insight into the nature of host-guest interactions of both 1⋅NH(4)(+) and 1⋅K(+) complexes as well as in the mechanism involved in multiple cation-π interactions and the influence of these interactions on the conformational stability and the selective binding of the host.

Abstract:A RATIO method for analysis of intensity changes in time-resolved pump-probe Laue diffraction experiments is described. The method eliminates the need for scaling the data with a wavelength curve representing the spectral distribution of the source and removes the effect of possible anisotropic absorption. It does not require relative scaling of series of frames and removes errors due to all but very short term fluctuations in the synchrotron beam.

Abstract:Introduction: Cochlear implant (CI) users differ greatly in their rehabilitation outcomes, including speech understanding in noise. This variability may be related to brain changes associated with intact senses recruiting cortical areas from stimulation-deprived senses. Numerous studies have demonstrated such cross-modal reorganization in individuals with untreated hearing loss. How it is affected by regular use of hearing devices remains unclear, however. To shed light on this, the current study measured cortical responses reflecting comprehension abilities in experienced CI users and normal-hearing controls. Methods: Using multichannel electroencephalography, we tested CI users who had used their devices for at least 12 months and closely matched controls (N = 2 × 13). Cortical responses reflecting comprehension abilities – the N400 and late positive complex (LPC) components – were evoked using congruent and incongruent digit-triplet stimuli. The participants’ task was to assess digit-triplet congruency by means of timed button presses. All measurements were performed in speech-shaped noise 15 dB above individually measured speech recognition thresholds. Three stimulus presentation modes were used: auditory-only, visual-only, and visual-then-auditory. Results: The analyses revealed no group differences in the N400 and LPC responses. In terms of response times, the CI users were slower and differentially affected by the three stimulus presentation modes relative to the controls. Conclusion: Compared to normal-hearing controls, experienced CI users may need more time to comprehend speech in noise. Response times can serve as a proxy for speech comprehension by CI users.

Functional hearing quality in prelingually deaf school-age children and adolescents with cochlear implants

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated differences in functional hearing quality between youth with cochlear implants (CIs) and normal hearing (NH) peers, as well as associations between functional hearing quality and audiological measures, speech perception, language and executive functioning (EF). Design: Youth with CIs and NH peers completed measures of audiological functioning, speech perception, language and EF. Parents completed the Quality of Hearing Scale (QHS), a questionnaire measure of functional hearing quality. Study sample: Participants were 43 prelingually-deaf, early-implanted, long-term CI users and 43 NH peers aged 7-17 years. Results: Compared to NH peers, youth with CIs showed poorer functional hearing quality on the QHS Speech, Localization, and Sounds subscales and more hearing effort on the QHS Effort subscale. QHS scores did not correlate significantly with audiological/hearing history measures but were significantly correlated with most speech perception, language and EF scores in the CI sample. In the NH sample, QHS scores were uncorrelated with speech perception and language and were inconsistently correlated with EF. Conclusions: The QHS is a valid measure of functional hearing quality that is distinct from office-based audiometric or hearing history measures. Functional hearing outcomes are associated with speech-language and EF outcomes in CI users.
Communication abilities of children with aided residual hearing: comparison with cochlear implant users

Abstract:Objective: To compare the communication outcomes between children with aided residual hearing and children with cochlear implants. Design: Measures of speech recognition and language were administered to pediatric hearing aid users and cochlear implant users followed up longitudinally as part of an ongoing investigation on cochlear implant outcomes. The speech recognition measures included the Lexical Neighborhood Test, Phonetically Balanced-Kindergarten Word Lists, and the Hearing in Noise Test for Children presented in quiet and noise (+5 dB signal-to-noise ratio). Language measures included the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test: Third Edition (PPVT-III), the Reynell Developmental Language Scales, and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-Revised. Subjects The experimental group was composed of 39 pediatric hearing aid users with a mean unaided pure-tone average threshold of 78.2 dB HL (hearing level). The comparison group was composed of 117 pediatric cochlear implant users with a mean unaided pure-tone average threshold of 110.2 dB HL. On average, both groups lost their hearing at younger than 1 year and were fitted with their respective sensory aids at 2 to 2.6 years of age. Not every child was administered every test for a variety of reasons. Results: Between-group performance was equivalent on most speech recognition and language measures. The primary difference found between groups was on the PPVT-III, in which the hearing aid group had a significantly higher receptive vocabulary language quotient than the cochlear implant group. Notably, the cochlear implant group was substantially younger than the hearing aid group and had less experience with their sensory devices on this measure. Conclusion: Data obtained from children with aided residual hearing can be useful in determining cochlear implant candidacy.
Cognitive Improvement After Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults With Severe or Profound Hearing Impairment: A Prospective, Longitudinal, Controlled, Multicenter Study

Abstract:Objective: To compare the cognitive evolution of older adults with severe or profound hearing impairment after cochlear implantation with that of a matched group of older adults with severe hearing impairment who do not receive a cochlear implant (CI). Design: In this prospective, longitudinal, controlled, and multicenter study, 24 older CI users were included in the intervention group and 24 adults without a CI in the control group. The control group matched the intervention group in terms of gender, age, formal education, cognitive functioning, and residual hearing. Assessments were made at baseline and 14 months later. Primary outcome measurements included the change in the total score on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status for Hearing impaired individuals score and on its subdomain score to assess cognitive evolution in both groups. Secondary outcome measurements included self-reported changes in sound quality (Hearing Implant Sound Quality Index), self-perceived hearing disability (Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale), states of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and level of negative affectivity and social inhibition (Type D questionnaire). Results: Improvements of the overall cognitive functioning (p = 0.05) and the subdomain "Attention" (p = 0.02) were observed after cochlear implantation in the intervention group; their scores were compared to the corresponding scores in the control group. Significant positive effects of cochlear implantation on sound quality and self-perceived hearing outcomes were found in the intervention group. Notably, 20% fewer traits of Type D personalities were measured in the intervention group after cochlear implantation. In the control group, traits of Type D personalities increased by 13%. Conclusion: Intervention with a CI improved cognitive functioning (domain Attention in particular) in older adults with severe hearing impairment compared to that of the matched controls with hearing impairment without a CI. However, older CI users did not, in terms of cognition, bridge the performance gap with adults with normal hearing after 1 year of CI use. The fact that experienced, older CI users still present subnormal cognitive functioning may highlight the need for additional cognitive rehabilitation in the long term after implantation.
Reduction of right-hemispheric auditory cortex activity in response to speech in more experienced paediatric cochlear implant users

Abstract:In case of severe hearing loss early in life or congenital deafness, cochlear implants (CIs) represent the method of choice to restore hearing and enable language acquisition. While speech intelligibility has been shown to improve during the first year after implantation to then reach a plateau, the underlying neuroplastic changes are poorly understood. Here, we longitudinally compared the cortical processing of speech stimuli in a case-control design with two groups of pre-lingually deafened CI users (4.4 vs. 25.8 months of CI experience) and an age-matched control group with normal hearing (NH; mean group ages ∼9 years). In two experiments, participants were presented with running speech and vowel sequences while fNIRS and EEG data were obtained simultaneously. Despite trends in this direction, cortical activity did not increase significantly with more CI experience and did not approach the higher levels observed in the NH controls. However, in the speech experiment, the less experienced CI group showed an abnormal shift of activity to the right hemisphere not observed in the other two groups. These results hence imply that adaptation to CI-based hearing is not characterised by a gradual increase of activity in left-hemispheric language network, but a reduction of abnormal activity elsewhere.

When Hearing Is Tricky: Speech Processing Strategies in Prelingually Deafened Children and Adolescents with Cochlear Implants Having Good and Poor Speech Performance

Abstract:Cochlear implants provide individuals who are deaf with access to speech. Although substantial advancements have been made by novel technologies, there still is high variability in language development during childhood, depending on adaptation and neural plasticity. These factors have often been investigated in the auditory domain, with the mismatch negativity as an index for sensory and phonological processing. Several studies have demonstrated that the MMN is an electrophysiological correlate for hearing improvement with cochlear implants. In this study, two groups of cochlear implant users, both with very good basic hearing abilities but with non-overlapping speech performance (very good or very poor speech performance), were matched according to device experience and age at implantation. We tested the perception of phonemes in the context of specific other phonemes from which they were very hard to discriminate (e.g., the vowels in /bu/ vs. /bo/). The most difficult pair was individually determined for each participant. Using behavioral measures, both cochlear implants groups performed worse than matched controls, and the good performers performed better than the poor performers. Cochlear implant groups and controls did not differ during time intervals typically used for the mismatch negativity, but earlier: source analyses revealed increased activity in the region of the right supramarginal gyrus (220-260 ms) in good performers. Poor performers showed increased activity in the left occipital cortex (220-290 ms), which may be an index for cross-modal perception. The time course and the neural generators differ from data from our earlier studies, in which the same phonemes were assessed in an easy-to-discriminate context. The results demonstrate that the groups used different language processing strategies, depending on the success of language development and the particular language context. Overall, our data emphasize the role of neural plasticity and use of adaptive strategies for successful language development with cochlear implants.

Cognitive processing speed improvement after cochlear implantation

Abstract:Background Untreated hearing loss has an effect on cognition. It is hypothesized that the additional processing required to compensate for the sensory loss affects the cognitive resources available for other tasks and that this could be mitigated by a hearing device. Methods The impact on cognition of cochlear implants (CIs) was tested in 100 subjects, ≥60 years old, with bilateral moderately-severe to profound post linguistic deafness using hearing aids. Data was compared pre and 12 and 18 months after cochlear implantation for the speech spatial qualities questionnaire, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Trail making test B (TMTB) and digit symbol coding (DSC) from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale version IV and finally the timed up and go test (TUG). Subjects were divided into young old (60–64), middle old (65–75) and old old (75+) groups. Cognitive test scores and times were standardized according to available normative data. Results Hearing significantly improved pre- to post-operatively across all age groups. There was no change post-implant in outcomes for TMTB, TUG or MMSE tests. Age-corrected values were within normal expectations for all age groups for the TUG and MMSE. However, DSC scores and TMTB times were worse than normal. There was a significant increase in DSC scores between baseline and 12-months for 60- to 64-year-olds ( t [153] = 2.608, p = 0.027), which remained at 18 months ( t [153] = 2.663, p = 0.023). Discussion The improved attention and processing speed in the youngest age group may be a consequence of reallocation of cognitive resources away from auditory processing due to greatly improved hearing. The oldest age group of participants had cognition scores closest to normal values, suggesting that only the most able older seniors tend to come forward for a CI. Severe to profoundly deaf individuals with hearing aids or cochlear implants were still poorer than age-equivalent normally hearing individuals with respect to cognitive flexibility, attention, working memory, processing speed and visuoperceptual functions. Due to a lack of data for the TUG, TMTB and DSC in the literature for hearing impaired individuals, the results reported here provide an important set of reference data for use in future research.

Cognitive Performance of Severely Hearing-impaired Older Adults Before and After Cochlear Implantation: Preliminary Results of a Prospective, Longitudinal Cohort Study Using the RBANS-H

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate cognitive change in severely hearing-impaired older adults after cochlear implantation. Study design: Prospective, longitudinal cohort study with assessments before, and at 6 and 12 months after implantation. Patients: Twenty older adults (median age: 71.5 yr). Main outcome measures: Change in the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status for Hearing-impaired individuals (RBANS-H) total score and subdomain scores were used to assess cognitive evolution. In addition, change in best-aided speech audiometry in quiet (monosyllabic words) and in noise (Leuven Intelligibility Sentences Test [LIST]) was examined, as well as patient-reported measures of health-related quality of life (Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire [NCIQ]), self-perceived hearing disability (Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of hearing Scale-12 [SSQ12]), sound quality (Hearing Implant Sound Quality Index-19 [HISQUI19]), and states of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]). Results: The RBANS-H total scores improved significantly after 12 months cochlear implant (CI) usage (p < 0.001). At subdomain level, significant improvements were observed in the immediate and delayed memory domain (p = 0.005 and p = 0.002, respectively), and to a lesser extent also in the attention domain (p = 0.047). Furthermore, speech perception in quiet and in noise improved significantly after 6 months and remained stable after 12 months. Similarly, a significant improvement was observed on all patient-reported measures after 6 months of CI usage. These results remained stable after 12 months, except for the HADS. Conclusions: A significant improvement in overall cognition after 12 months of CI usage was established. However, future research is imperative to further disentangle possible practice effects from the effects of the cochlear implantation. The significant, positive effect of cochlear implantation on speech perception and patient-reported measures was confirmed.
Effects of Bimodal and Bilateral Cochlear Implant Use on a Nonauditory Working Memory Task: Reading Span Tests Over 2 Years Following Cochlear Implantation.

Abstract:Purpose A growing body of evidence indicates that treatment of hearing loss by provision of hearing aids leads to improvements in auditory and visual working memory. The purpose of this study was to assess whether similar working memory benefits are observed following provision of cochlear implants (CIs). Method Fifteen adults with postlingually acquired severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss completed the prospective longitudinal study. Participants were candidates for bilateral cochlear implantation with some aidable hearing in each ear. Implantation surgeries were carried out sequentially, approximately 1 year apart. Working memory was measured with the visual Reading Span Test (Daneman & Carpenter, 1980) at 5 time points: pre-operatively following a 6-month bilateral hearing aid trial, after 6 and 12 months of bimodal (CI plus contralateral hearing aid) listening experience following the 1st CI surgery and activation, and again after 6 and 12 months of bilateral CI listening experience following the 2nd CI surgery and activation. Results Compared to the preoperative baseline, CI listening experience yielded significant improvements in participants' ability to recall test words in the correct serial order after 12 months in the bimodal condition. Individual performance outcomes were variable, but almost all participants showed increases in task performance over the course of the study. Conclusions These results suggest that, similar to appropriate interventions with hearing aids, treatment of hearing loss with CIs can yield working memory benefits. A likely mechanism is the freeing of cognitive resources previously devoted to effortful listening.

Abstract:PurposeThis study investigates the relationship between pre-linguistic social communication skills and age of cochlear implant for future language outcomes in a large sample of deaf children.MethodA retrospective cohort study of records from 75 children. Pre-implant data included Age at Implant, pre-linguistic communication (social, symbolic and speech) skills, and non-verbal ability. Receptive and expressive language development data at 1 year, 2 years and 4 years post implant were analysed to investigate the relationships between pre-implant factors and language outcomes, in particular pre-linguistic social communication skills in early and late implanted children.ResultsAge at Implant was the strongest correlate of post implant expressive and receptive language outcomes. The sample was divided into early implanted ( 18 months) children. In the early implanted group, pre-linguistic social communication skills were the strongest pre-implant correlate of language outcomes four years post-implant. In the late implanted group, there were no significant pre-implant correlates of language outcomes.ConclusionsLong term language outcomes after cochlear implantation are the product of a set of communicative, cognitive and environmental factors. Early pre-implant social communication skills are an important consideration for clinicians who guide parents as to likely long-term outcomes post cochlear implantation. Social communication skills are particularly important for children who receive implants before the age of 18 months.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between functional hearing, language, social, bilateral coordination and manual dexterity skills in children with early cochlear implants (CIs). Methods Thirty children with CIs were included in this study. The manual dexterity and bilateral coordination development of the participants were evaluated with Manual Dexterity and Bilateral Coordination subtests of Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2). Their language skills were assessed by the Test of Early language Development-3. To assess the functional hearing of participants the Functioning After Pediatric Cochlear Implantation scale (FAPCI) was administered their caregivers. Also, the Social Skills Evaluation Scale was administered to participants’ teachers to asses their social skills. Results There were significant correlations between participants’ receptive and expressive language skills, Manual Dexterity, and FAPCI scores ( p < 0.05). There were also significant relationships between the SSES and FAPCI scores of the participants ( p < 0.05). However, the Bilateral Coordination subtest did not show any significant correlation with any of the measurements ( p > 0.05). Conclusion The results suggest that the language, manual dexterity and functional hearing abilities of children with CIs are closely related. Although, there were no significant correlations between all of the measurement, it is important to look beyond hearing and speech evaluations to assess the whole child.

Effect of cochlear implant side on early speech processing in adults with single-sided deafness

Abstract:Objective: In binaurally deaf subjects, speech processing particularly benefits from a cochlear implant (CI) in the right ear, which is contralateral to the commonly left speech-dominant hemisphere. However, it is unclear whether such effects of implantation side also occur in speech processing in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). Methods: Lateralization of N1 responses was analyzed with a high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) in fourteen adults with postlingually acquired left or right SSD who received a CI in adulthood. During recording, patients performed a speech and a pure-tone discrimination task. Lateralization of N1 responses was assessed by side-specific global field power (GFP) and compared (a) between normal hearing and CI-implanted ears within subjects and (b) between implantation sides across subjects. Results: N1 responses were stronger in the contralateral than in the ipsilateral hemisphere during stimulation of the normal hearing ear (except for left speech stimulation), and was bilateral symmetric with CI stimulation on either side. A significant correlation between speech discrimination performance and left lateralization was found across subjects for the left CI ear. Conclusions: CI stimulation altered auditory processing across hemispheres. Speech discrimination in left CI-implanted SSD patients improved with left lateralization of the N1 response. Significance: Side-specific rehabilitation in SSD patients might improve speech processing across hemispheres.
