Abstract:The combination of a micmchannel and a circular synthetic jet has been proven as a promising cooling technology for microelectronic devices. However, the flow control and heat transfer characteristics of a circular synthetic jet in a microchannel are still not clear. This work numerically investigates the interaction between a circular synthetic jet and a cross flow in a microchannel using an in-house solver based on the finite volume method and analyzes its impact on the heat transfer process to further understand the heat transfer enhancement induced by a circular synthetic jet in a microchannel. The effects of the synthetic jet Reynolds number (Re-sj = 0 to 324), dimensionless stroke length (L/H = 1.8432 to 92.16), and cross-flow Reynolds number (Re-c = 188 to 470) are studied herein. The results show that the main body of the vortex structure generated by the circular impinging synthetic jet during the discharge stage is a hairpin vortex. During the downstream motion of the hairpin vortex, the vortex legs gradually stretch and evolve into a pair of large-scale longitudinal vortex. The heat transfer enhancement induced by a circular synthetic jet can be divided into two parts according to the difference in acting mechanism: an impinging region with severe heat transfer fluctuation and an entraining region with a relatively stable heat transfer performance. The parametric study demonstrates that the enhancements of the time-area-averaged Nusselt number and the total pressure drop are mainly affected by Re-sj, while the transient heat transfer performance is determined by L/H. Furthermore, the growth rates of the time-area-averaged Nusselt number and the total pressure drop are almost independent of Re-c.

Abstract:The present paper describes the numerical results of the fluid flow and heat-transfer characteristics of the impinging turbulent plane jet with the confined wall. Numerical results were obtained in the range of the nondimensional height from H=1.0 to 3.0. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter and mean velocity was set to 8000. According to the experimental results, it had been shown that two peaks of the distribution of local heat-transfer coefficient exist along the impingement wall. To the best of our knowledge, no numerical solution has been obtained for the heat-transfer characteristics of the impinging jet in a very narrow channel. We applied a low Reynolds number version of the anisontropic k-ε model of turbulence, i.e., the Myong-Kasagi model, and a WET model for the turbulent heat fluxes to simulate this turbulent impinging flow and heat transfer. The simulation results were in a very good agreement with the experimental one. We could predict the secondary peak of the local heat-transfer distribution on the impingement wall. The reason why the secondary peak appeared was determined. We pointed out that both treatments of low Reynolds number modeling and this anisotropic k-ε model of turbulence were very important for this very strong anisotropic turbulent shear flow.

Abstract:Impingement heat transfer and flow in the radial and circumferential directions by a single circular laminar jet in a flow passage with a confined insulated wall were estimated numerically in a three-dimensional system and were recognized by visualization of a thermosensitive liquid crystal. Local heat transfer is divided into three regions. The first is a two-dimensional forced convection region whose structure is a co-axial circle. The second laminar mixed-convection region begins with the onset of a buoyancy driven flow, which corresponds to thermal plumes rising from the heated impingement surface at discrete circumferential locations. The ascending and descending pair flows form longitudinal streak lines in the mixed convection region. The number of pairs is found to depend on the aspect ratio of circumferential length and distance between nozzle and impingement surface. The third is a three-dimensional natural convection region similar to Benard convection which constructs several cells. The radial Nusselt number distribution averaged along the circumferential direction is also presented corresponding to the flow.

Abstract:In this paper, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a circular air jet vertically impinging on a flat plate near to the nozzle (H/d= 1 similar to 6, where H is the nozzle-to-target spacing, d the diameter of the jet) are numerical analyzed using the CFD code FLUENT 6.1.18. The relative performance of seven versions of turbulent models, including the standard k - epsilon model, the renormalization group k-epsilon model, the realizable k-epsilon model, the standard k-omega model, the Shear-Stress Transport (SST) k-omega model, the Reynolds Stress (RS) model and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES), for the prediction of this type of flow and heat transfer is investigated by comparing the numerical results with available benchmark experimental data. It is found that Shear-Stress Transport k - omega model and Large Eddy Simulation time-variant model can give better predictions of fluid flow and heat transfer properties; especially, the SST k - omega model is recommended as the best compromise between the computational cost and accuracy. Using SST k-omega model, the effects of jet Reynolds number (Re), jet plate length-to-jet diameter ratio (L/d), target spacing-to-jet diameter ratio (H/d) and jet plate width-to-jet diameter ratio (W/d) on local Nusselt number (Nu) of the target plate are examined. A correlation for the stagnation Nit is presented.

Abstract:Understanding heat transfer characteristics of sheet metal is of practical importance in sheet metal rolling operation to ensure strength and quality of final product. We present a numerical study of free surface planar liquid jet impingement on a uniformly heated moving surface. Scale adaptive simulation (SAS) for turbulent flow and volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to capture the liquid-air interface. The computational domain was divided into two parts to carry out 3D simulations, then results of separate domains were superimposed to resolve boundary conditions. A parametric study considered three different jet Reynolds numbers of 4000, 8000 and 12000. Four different surface to jet velocity ratios, u s /u j , were considered. We focused on studying interfacial flow characteristics, turbulence intensity variations, and their relation to heat transfer. Splitting the domain into two parts and superimposing results as boundary conditions resulted in a reasonable accuracy and reduced computation cost. We observed that gravity significantly affects interfacial structures at Reynolds number of 4000. As surface velocity increases, the heat removal rate from the impingement surface in the direction of plate motion increases. However, contrasting trends are observed in the reverse direction despite increased turbulence fluctuations with surface velocity.

Abstract:Thermal control of electronic components is a continuously emerging problem as power loads keep increasing. To solve these thermal problems impinging jets are generally used in engineering, science and industry for its good heat transfer performance. In this study; cooling of a flat plate under constant heat flux condition, inside a rectangular channel, consisting of one open and three blocked sides was experimentally and numerically investigated using a single air jet flow. The impingement surface was a copper plate of the same width as the jet nozzle. Inlet flow velocities were measured using a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) system. Temperature measurements were performed using thermocouples. Local and mean Nu numbers were determined as a function of two parameters, (a) Jet-to-plate distance (H/Dh) in the range of 4–10 and (b) Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of the slot nozzle in the range of 4000–10,000 (corresponding to an exit jet velocity from 6.5 to 16.2 m/s). Numerical investigation was also performed. Low Re number k–ε turbulence model was used during investigations. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing the variation of the local Nusselt number as a function of these parameters. The effect of Re number on local Nu number was examined for q″ = 1000 W/m2 and H/Dh = 6. In general, it was observed that heat transfer is sensitive to the Reynolds number and increases with increasing Re number. Average Nusselt number increases of 49.5 % from Re = 4000 to Re = 10000. Effect of H/Dh on heat transfer under impinging air jets was examined with local Nusselt numbers. Local Nusselt number was less sensitive to H/Dh in the range of H/Dh = 4–10. Average Nusselt number decreases of 17.9 % from H/Dh = 4 to H/Dh = 10. The highest average Nu number was achieved for Re = 10,000 and H/Dh = 4. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data, including local and average Nusselt numbers. Correlations are proposed to predict the local Nusselt number as a function of Re number and H/Dh.

Abstract:A smooth flat plate impinged by multiple jets is investigated for the local heat transfer using a thermal imaging technique. An inline arrangement of circular jets with all side exit scheme is implemented. Jets are introduced from a 4 mm thick orifice plate. The jet diameter is 3 mm. Reynolds numbers (based on the jet diameter) range covered in this study are from 500 to 15,000. The variation of the local, spanwise average, and overall average Nusselt numbers is investigated for nozzle exit to targeted plate spacing of 0.5 d– 6 d , where d is the jet diameter. A periodic pattern is witnessed in the local Nusselt number with a drop in its amplitude in the spanwise direction. For a given Reynolds number, the local and average Nusselt numbers are influenced by nozzle exit to targeted plate spacing. The influence of Reynolds number on the local and average Nusselt number is captured using Ren. The value of n is found to be 0.5 and 0.6 depending on the Reynolds number range. In comparison with a single jet, multiple jet impingement on a smooth flat plate deteriorates the local Nusselt number. A semi-empirical correlation that captures the periodic nature of local and average Nusselt numbers is suggested.

Abstract:The influence of jet-to-target spacing on flow and heat transfer behaviors for swirling impinging micro-slot jets has been extensively studied. In this study, two complete revolutions of the generated helix under the slot nozzle thickness of 1.0 mm constrained the total spiraling length to 290 mm. The range of jet-to-target spacing varied from 1 to 6. The turbulent kinetic energy-epsilon model was employed to make predictions at Reynolds numbers from 5000 to 20000. The results showed that the heat transfer enhancement on the target wall depended on the pacing between the jet and the target. This is the jet flow structure exhibited a notable intensity of high-velocity vortices at the low jet-to-target spacing, whereas the jet flow impingement was abruptly reduced at the high jet-to-target spacing. The heat transfer rate also tended to increase as the Reynolds number increased. In addition, when the jet-to-target spacing was at 1, the average heat transfer value was between 32.9% and 54.2% higher than in other conditions due to high fluid acceleration.

Abstract:In this study, the flow behavior and heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film on the hot wall by inclined jet impingement are experimentally studied in detail. The effects of jet parameters, such as jet inclination angle, impingement distance, jet Reynolds number ( Re j ), and nozzle diameter are explored. The liquid film flow is visualized using a high-speed camera, and the surface temperature and heat flux are obtained by solving the inverse heat conduction problem. The results indicate that the liquid film shape is strongly affected by jet inclination angle but is almost unaffected by other parameters. As the inclination angle increases, the liquid film shape changes from elliptical to fusiform. In addition, the onset, enhancement, and disappearance of boiling cause the expansion and contraction of liquid film. The splashing rate is barely affected by jet parameters and remains within the range of 80–95 % under all conditions. The propagation of wetting fronts exhibits anisotropy. Except for the impingement distance, the position of wetting fronts along y -axis direction displays a high dependence on all parameters. The Re j and nozzle diameter have a significant effect on the heat flux at the impingement point and parallel flow zone, while the jet inclination angle and impingement distance only effect the impingement point. The visualization image proves that the droplet impingement pattern is the main reason for the increase in heat flux at higher impingement distances. Optimizing jet parameters can promote the wall to enter the rapid cooling stage in advance and increase maximum heat flux, thereby improving the maximum cooling capacity of the jet. Finally, an empirical equation is proposed to predict the maximum Nusselt number.

Abstract:Turbulent impinging slot jets at three different angles were analyzed numerically using the SIMPLE algorithm and an RNG-based k-e turbulence model to investigate the flow field structure and heat transfer characteristics. The results show a recirculation zone forming in the outflow region on each side of the jet due to entrainment and the effect of the top plate. As the jet angle decreases, the recirculation zone on the left side becomes smaller than that of the right side. The low temperature zone in the flow field as well as the locations of the maximum pressure coefficient and the maximum local Nusselt number on the impingement surface all move to the left side of the flow field as the angle decreases. Also as the angle decreases, the maximum pressure coefficient on the impingement surface decreases, the maximum local Nusselt number remains nearly constant, and the average heat transfer rate along the impingement surface decreases.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to describe the flow as well as the heat and mass transfer of twin laminar jet impinging a flat catalytic sample. The Navier–Stokes and energy equations are solved by numerical simulations. When the flow reaches a steady state, a passive scalar transport equation is added to account for mass transfer on the impinging plate. The computed flows for a range of Reynolds number (3.3–100), jet-to-jet distance ( 2.4R−6.2R ) and two temperature gradients between the sample and the jet injection (0 and 300 K), are analyzed. The jet-to-jet interactions are specially described in the case where a fountain flow resulting from the wall-jets colliding is observed. Described interactions are classified in a topological diagram according to the Reynolds number and the normalized jet spacing for the isothermal case as well as in the presence of temperature gradient. The heat and mass transfer description is further conditioned on the flow characteristics as identified by the topological diagram. It is observed that the average Nusselt number on the sample is the lowest when the fountain flow is blocked by the impinging jet shear layer interaction. Mass transfer on the sample is then described by the ratio of the mass flux orthogonal and parallel to the injection line within the boundary layer on the sample. The ratio is lower than 1 when the flow is blocked. This study points out the importance of the presence of a fountain flow on heat and mass transfer quantities in the flow surrounding the catalytic sample.

Abstract:Jet impingement is a complex flow governed by several variables; therefore, it is important to perform an in-depth study to understand their influence on heat transfer efficiency. This work uses a Particle Image Velocimetry technique and a heat flux sensor to study the flow field of a jet impinging a flat plate. To provide more data that complement the experimental approach, a numerical model of an air jet is performed using ANSYS FLUENT software. The study focuses on a single air jet impinging a flat plate in a confined space considering two different case studies – an isothermal and non-isothermal jet to analyze the effect of plate temperature on the flow development and two different jet velocities to determine the effect of flow velocity in laminar ( Re = 400) and in transition ( Re = 1000) regimes on heat transfer. This work provides relevant insights regarding jets with a low Reynolds number, which is slightly explores in the literature. The results show that the flow structure and heat transfer profile is well predicted by the numerical tool, showing a good compromise between the accuracy of the numerical results and reduced computational costs. The data provided by the numerical model offers more information that is not possible to obtain experimentally due to instrumental and physical limitations, highlighting the potential of ANSYS FLUENT to model impinging jets.

Abstract:The present research involves a computational investigation by adopting a conjugate technique in a turbulent wall jet flow on a moving plate heated isothermally at the bottom. The low-Reynolds-number YS model is adopted for the simulation to predict the thermal and fluid behavior in the near wall regime. The wall jet enters a quiescent environment of Prandtl number of 7 at a constant Reynolds number of Re=15000 at the inlet. The thermal parameters considered for observing the thermal behavior are solid-fluid conduction ratio (K), plate-jet thickness ratio (S), and plate to jet velocity ratio (Up). The temperature distributions in the plate domain, temperature at the solid-fluid interface, local Nusselt number, and average Nusselt number provided evidence of the effects of plate movement in the present cases. The plate motion strongly influences the distribution of the local and the averaged Nusselt number along with the temperature at the interface. The average Nusselt number calculated suggests that plate motion is crucial in enhancing heat transfer rate.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of a rectangular and a square turbulent impinging jet has been performed through the solution of 3D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation by using the SIMPLE algorithm and an RNG based k-e turbulence model.The simulation results reveal the existence of two and four streamwise velocity off-center peaks near the impingement surfaces,respectively,for the rectangular and square impinging jets.The off-center velocity peaks are formed by the vorticity diffusion and vortex stretching along wall jet,as jet impinges on its target plate.Furthermore,the formation of the off-center velocity peaks is closely related to the magnitudes of jet Reynolds number and nozzle-to-plate spacing,while the number of the off-center velocity peaks depends on the geometry of the jet nozzle.The heat transfer characteristics of the impinging jet are dominated by the flow field structure.The existence of the velocity off-center peaks results in the formation of the local Nusselt number off-center peaks on the impingement surface.

Abstract:The velocity fields and impinging pressure characteristics of confined jet impinges on a flat surface subject to the influence of various axial stages of a flat plate were experimentally examined. The instantaneous flow patterns, time-averaged flow patterns and velocity characteristics, velocity histories, and impingement pressure distributions were obtained using flow visualisation, particle image velocimeter (PIV), hot-wire anemometer measurement, and pressure detection techniques, respectively. From the analysis of the flow patterns, three characteristics of flow regimes are identified – laminar vortical wake, transition, and turbulent vortical wake – in the domain of Reynolds number and jet-to-wall distance. In laminar vortical wake mode, a 'fat' pair of counter-rotating vortices appears between the confining surface of the nozzle and the flat plate. This results in a large region of turbulent intensities due to the entrainment of the jet flow. In transition mode, shear-layer vortices appear on the shear layer of the bifurcated jet. In turbulent vortical wake mode, the large momentum of jet fluids impinges the flat plate and deflects radially. The counter-rotating vortices and shear-layer vortices no longer exist in the wake of the bifurcated jet. The large eddies quickly break up into small eddies as the momentum of the jet-dominated flow. No obvious peak value of oscillating frequency was detected in this flow mode along the shear layers of the bifurcated impinging jet. The momentum of the fluid structures is converted into stagnation pressure on the flat plate when a strong jet impinges on it; therefore, the impingement pressure is large, consequently. The impingement pressure in the mode of the turbulent vortical wake wa s significantly greater than that in the modes of laminar vortical wake and transition .

The effects of rough surfaces on heat transfer and flow structures for turbulent round jet impingement

Abstract:Heat transfer and flow structures for round jet impingement over rough surfaces have been investigated using the shear stress transport model (SST) with transition model. This model is first evaluated against the experimental data and other numerical results for the smooth surface with Reynolds number Re = 23,000 for the nozzle-plate spacing of 2. Based on the above evaluation, the effects of rough surfaces on the mean velocity, turbulence field, skin friction and heat transfer are investigated with equivalent sand grain roughness heights ks of 50, 100, 250 and 500 μm. Two trends of the effects of roughness on the velocity field are found. First, the mean velocity over rough surfaces becomes steeper than that over the smooth surface in very near the wall. However, for ks ≥ 250 μm, the velocity gradient in the axial direction does not increase with an increase of ks. Second, the decay of the mean velocity is found in the deceleration region, but minimal in the acceleration zone. In addition, it is observed that the increase of roughness height leads to the reduction of the wall shear stress in the stagnation region. On the contrary, downstream, large ks usually contributes to an augmentation of wall shear stress. For heat transfer, the enhancement of heat transfer due to roughness varies from 2.53% to 6.08% compared with the case of smooth surface. However, this enhancement is non-monotonic due to the change of the second peak of heat transfer which is believed to be the key factor.

Experimental investigation of thermal characteristics of slot synthetic jet impingement on a circular cylinder: Free and constrained environment

Abstract:The present study aimed to comprehensively investigate the thermal behavior of a slot synthetic jet (SJ) interacting with a circular cylinder in both free and constrained environments through experimental analysis. By traversing the cylinder along the jet centerline across a range of non-dimensional distances ( H/w = 5-50), spanning from the near-field to the fully developed region, the research aimed to elucidate the factors governing heat transfer performance. Key parameters such as Reynolds number, jet-cylinder separation distance, and excitation frequency were scrutinized to understand their influence on thermal performance. The SJ was found to perform better in the constrained environment, attributed to relatively higher flow fluctuations developed by the complex interaction of the vortex with the sidewall boundary layer and the cylinder. Almost 12% higher average heat transfer was observed in the case of the constrained environment over the range of parameters employed in the current work. Moreover, a strong dependence of heat transfer on the jet cylinder separation distance was also found. In contrast to the SJ impinging on flat target surfaces where the maximum heat transfer was attained in the intermediate field, at H/w = 14 to 18, for SJ impingement on the circular cylinder, however, this was consistently achieved in the near field, i.e., H/w = 5. Also, the thermal performance as a function of the flow Reynolds number was comparable to the uniform flow case when the Reynolds number was based on the approach flow velocity (i.e., local velocity based on the cylinder location) instead of the velocity at the slot exit.

Abstract:By employing algorithm SIMPLE and a RNG k-e turbulent model and through the solution of a three-dimensional N-S equation and energy equation a numerical simulation was performed of a rectangular-tube turbulent impinging jet flow with Reynolds number of 10000 and an impingement height of 4 times of nozzle hydraulic diameter.It has been found that at the jet flow cross-section near the impingement surface accompanied by the appearance of two counter-rotating vortex pairs there emerge two eccentric peak values of main stream velocity.An analysis shows that the formation of the dual-eccentric velocity peak values is caused by the vorticity upstream diffusion produced by the impingement surface.An investigation of the temperature field and the local Nusselt number distribution of the impingement surface indicates that heat transfer characteristics of the jet flow are controlled by the flow structure and the use of a rectangular-tube turbulent jet flow can result in a relatively large impingement zone and more uniform cooling effectiveness.

Abstract:Abstract An experimental and numerical study is performed to investigate heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics for impingement. Experimental heat transfer is measured by the thermochromic liquid crystal. The CFD model uses a steady state RANS approach and the shear stress transport (SST). The effect of Reynolds number (5000–25000), the distance between the holes and the distance from the hole to target on the impingement is investigated in the present study. Local Nusselt number as well as area and line average values are gotten experimentally and numerically. Besides, numerical simulations provide the detailed flow characteristics of the problem and complement experimental measurements. The result shows that the heat transfer increases with Reynolds number increasing. But the qualitative distribution of local heat transfer does not change with the increase of Reynolds number, when it is sensitive to P/D and Z/D. The performance of heat transfer is best when Z/D = 2. And the high heat transfer region of Z/D = 1 is closer to the exit than that of Z/D = 2 and Z/D = 3. The main reason is the effect of cross flow and the momentum of the jet reaching the wall. The performance of heat transfer is best when P/D = 5. And the high heat transfer region of P/D = 4 is closer to the exit than that of P/D = 5 and P/D = 6. The main reason is the effect of cross flow and interactions between jets.
