Abstract:Ginger (<i>Zingiber officinale</i> Roscoe, Zingeberaceae) is a medicinal plant widely used as food, spice, or flavoring agent worldwide. 6-Shogaol is a compound of prime interest in exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and chemopreventive effects. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of microwave-assisted drying (MAD) followed by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) so as to produce 6-Shogaol enriched Ginger with improved therapeutic benefits. Various drying techniques <i>viz.</i> shade drying, tray drying, microwave-assisted drying and osmotic dehydration as a pretreatment were used for drying Ginger rhizomes. The dried rhizomes were extracted by conventional solvent extraction and microwave-assisted extraction techniques and tested for content of 6-Shogaol using the newly developed HPLC method whereas total flavonoid and polyphenol content were determined using the UV spectrophotometric method. Subjecting the microwave dried Ginger to microwave-assisted extraction for 45 min at constant power level of 284 W resulted in a significant rise in the extractability of 6-Shogaol (1.660 ± 0.018), total polyphenols (855.46 ± 5.33) and flavonoids (617.97 ± 6.40) compared to the conventional method of extraction. The proposed Ginger processing method of microwave drying followed by microwave extraction outperforms traditional methods in terms of speed, convenience, and performance thus can be scaled up to industrial levels.

Abstract:The conventional extraction methods for polysaccharides were time-consuming, laborious and energy-consuming. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was employed for the extraction of Potentilla anserina polysaccharides (PAPMAE), which is a traditional Chinese functional food. The extracting parameters of PAPMAE were optimized by Box–Behnken design. The optimum conditions were ratio of water to raw material 14.5:1, microwave power 369W, extraction temperature 63.3°C and extraction time 76.8min with an enhanced yield of 13.33%. In microwave heating process, a sharp decrease in Mw was detected in SEC-LLS measurement. A df value of 3.03 indicated that PAPMAE exhibited a compact hard sphere conformation in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, it showed stronger antioxidant activities compared with hot water extraction by evaluating in superoxide radical (O2-), hydroxyl radical (OH), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, reducing power and metal chelating assay. The data obtained clearly showed that the molecular weights played a more important role in antioxidant activities.

Abstract:6-Gingerol is the major pharmacologically active component of ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome widely used in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Various extraction and purification methods have been devel-oped to obtain highly purified 6-gingerol. 6-Gingerol can be extracted using conventional and nonconventional extraction techniques. Hydroalcoholic solutions and liquid CO2 are the most suitable solvents for the extraction of 6-gingerol, while microwave-assisted extraction is the best extraction method. High-speed counter-current chro-matography is the purification technique resulting in the highest purity of 6-gingerol. Despite the various biological properties of 6-gingerol, the low bioavailability of 6-gingerol is the main challenge that limits its application. Novel encapsulation and solubilization techniques, including nanoemulsion, complexation, micelles, and solid dispersion methods, have been introduced to enhance the bioavailability of 6-gingerol, overcoming its limitations. 6-Gingerol showed potential applications as a natural antioxidant, preservative, and flavor enhancer as well as demonstrated a synergistic effect with different ingredients for maintaining the quality and shelf-life of the food products. The current work provides a comprehensive review of the prevailing techniques applied for extraction and purification of 6-gingerol from the rhizome of ginger, current research on the application of 6-gingerol in the food industry, and novel advances for increasing its bioavailability.

Abstract:The extraction and separation of effective components from Chinese herb and natural plant is one of the most important processes of natural medicine production. Recently, more and more advanced techniques have been used in the field of modern Chinese medicines, for example, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Developed on the base of traditional extracting technology using by organic solvents, MAE is of higher extraction rate and efficiency and better extract quality, as well as few investment, simple equipment, wide adaptability, high selectivity, good fidelity and no pollution. This paper mainly reviews the action principle and characteristic of MAE and its application in the extraction of natural products such as flavonoids, glycosides, polysaccharides, terpenoids and essence. Otherwise, the developing foreground of MAE is also prospected here.

Abstract:The Sexual Health in Faith Traditions Study evaluated the relationships between religiosity, spirituality, internalized homonegativity, and sexual risk behaviors among a sample of African American men who have sex with men living in the Deep South. Participants were recruited primarily from Black Gay Pride celebrations to complete a self-administered, paper-and-pencil survey. Structural equation modeling was used to determine relationships between key constructs and condom use for insertive (n = 285) and receptive (n = 263) anal intercourse in the past 3 months. Almost half of respondents reported using condoms “every time” when engaging in insertive (48.3%) or receptive (45.1%) anal intercourse. Religiosity and spirituality were differentially associated with dimensions of internalized homonegativity. While no significant direct relationships were reported between either religiosity or spirituality and condom use, dimensions of internalized homonegativity mediated significant indirect relationships. Findings suggest that religiosity and spirituality influence African American men who have sex with men’s internalized homonegativity and, subsequently, engagement in safer sex behaviors.

Abstract:The present study optimized the extraction process of bioactive compounds present in ginger (Zingiber officinale) dried at 80 °C, using ethanol:water 70:30 (v/v) as solvent. The extracts were evaluated for antioxidant activity by the 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical reduction methods and by the chelating activity of FeII ions. It was found that the extraction condition with a temperature of 60 °C and an extraction time of 12 h showed better responses to the tests. Then, the characterization of the compounds was carried out by mass spectrometry and thermal analysis (thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)), identifying that the main compounds of ginger were gingerols and shogaols, being confirmed by the intensities and characteristics of the thermal graphs. The inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was evaluated using the Ellman test, which did not show an inhibitory action. Regarding cytotoxic activity, the free extract and encapsulated in liposomes were tested, showing antiproliferative effect at different concentrations for human kidney tumor cells (786-0), liver cells (HUH7.5), and Macaca mullata normal kidney cells (LLC-MK2). Given the results obtained, ginger presents itself as a renewable source of bioactive compounds and can be indicated for applications in the pharmaceutical industry

Abstract:Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was employed for the extraction of himematsutake (Agaricus blazei Murrill) polysaccharide (PMAE) and optimized by Box-Behnken design. The optimum conditions were extraction time 29.37 min, microwave power 400 W, extraction temperature 74.64 degrees C and ratio of water to material 32.7:1 with an enhanced yield of 12.35%. Furthermore, PMAE had increased antioxidant activity in various oxidative systems in vitro when compared to polysaccharides extracted by conventional methods. The data obtained clearly showed that MAE is a fine way to extract the polysaccharides in A. blazei Murrill. Further, PMAE may be developed into a functional food as well as potential therapeutic agent.

Abstract:Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger) is a plant from the Zingiberaceae family, and its extracts have been found to contain several compounds with beneficial bioactivities. Nowadays, the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable extraction methods has attracted considerable interest. The main objective of this study was to evaluate subcritical propane (scPropane), supercritical CO2 (scCO2), and supercritical CO2 with ethanol (scCO2 + EtOH) as co-solvent methods for the extraction of high value products from ginger. In addition, the reuse/recycling of the secondary biomass in a second extraction as a part of the circular economy was evaluated. Both the primary and the secondary biomass led to high yield percentages, ranging from 1.23% to 6.42%. The highest yield was observed in the scCO2 + EtOH, with biomass prior used to scCO2 extraction. All extracts presented with high similarities as far as their total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacity, and chemical composition. The most abundant compounds, identified by the two different gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems present, were a-zingiberene, β- sesquiphellandrene, a-farnesene, β-bisabolene, zingerone, gingerol, a-curcumene, and γ-muurolene. Interestingly, the reuse/recycling of the secondary biomass was found to be promising, as the extracts showed high antioxidant capacity and consisted of significant amounts of compounds with beneficial properties.

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to evaluate the optimum conditions applied by the supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation to maximize the content of 6-gingerol extracted from Ginger rhizomes. 3000Kg of Ginger rhizomes were collected from Jia Shian in Taiwan. The rhizomes were dried and ground into three granule-size groups, 0.297˜0.840mm, 0.840˜2.00 mm, and >2.00mm, respectively. The granules were extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide (SFE) under various combinations of pressures (80, 100, 120bar) and temperatures (35, 45, 55°C). The extracts collected under different conditions were then analyzed by HPLC to determine the content of 6-gingerol. The results showed that the extracts collected from 0.840˜2.00 mm group at 35°C and 200bar produced the greatest content of 6-gingerol, 20.23%. In order to evaluate the optimal conditions to further increase the content of 6-gingerol from ginger oil, 30Kg of SFE-obtained ginger oil by scaled-up SFE extraction was run by the supercritical fluid fractionation under different conditions. Selected pressures (80, 100, 120bar), temperatures (35, 45, 55°C), CO2 flow rates/volumes of ginger oil (5/1, 10/1, 15/1) and re-extracted times (0, 1, 2) of collected ginger oil from separator were tested to evaluate the best conditions that can help increase the content of 6-gingerol from the fractionation extracts. The results showed that the greatest content of 6-gingerol, 68.83%, was collected under one specific set of conditions: 120bar, 35°C, 10/1 (CO2 flow rate/volume of ginger oil) and re-extracted 2 times of collected ginger oil from the separator. The results may be utilized by the industry to enhance the 6-gingerol content during Ginger production.

Abstract:Ginger has been widely used for different purposes, such as condiment, functional food, drugs, and cosmetics. Gingerols, the main pungent component in ginger, possess a variety of bioactivities. To fully understand the significance of gingerols in the food and pharmaceutical industry, this paper first recaps the composition and physiochemical properties of gingerols, and the major extraction and synthesis methods. Furthermore, the pungency and bioactivity of gingerols are reviewed. In addition, the food application of gingerols and future perspectives are discussed. Gingerols, characterized by a 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl moiety, are divided into gingerols, shogaols, paradols, zingerone, gingerdiones and gingerdiols. At present, gingerols are extracted by conventional, innovative, and integrated extraction methods, and synthesized by chemical, biological and in vitro cell synthesis methods. Gingerols can activate transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) and induce signal transduction, thereby exhibiting its pungent properties and bioactivity. By targeted mediation of various cell signaling pathways, gingerols display potential anticancer, antibacterial, blood glucose regulatory, hepato- and renal-protective, gastrointestinal regulatory, nerve regulatory, and cardiovascular protective effects. This review contributes to the application of gingerols as functional ingredients in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:[Objective] To optimize the extraction process of gingerol from dry rhizome of Zingiber officinale Rose..[Method] Ethanol reflux method was adopted,with the extraction rate of gingerol as index,ethanol volume,reflux time and extraction times were selected for the orthogonal experiment.[Result] The optimum extraction process of gingerol from dried Ginger was as follows:5.5 ml 60% ethanol,extraction time of 3,1 h of each time.[Conclusion] The determined process is reasonable,reproductive and efficient which has instructive significance for the industrial extraction of Rhizoma zingiberis.

Abstract:An efficient microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was employed to extract total phenolics (TP) from sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] leaves (TPSL). The optimal conditions for microwave-assisted extraction of TPSL were determined by response surface methodology. A face-centered cubic design (FCD) was applied to evaluate the effects of three independent variables (microwave power, extraction time and ethanol proportion) on the recovery of TPSL. The correlation analysis of the mathematical-regression model indicated that quadratic polynomial model could be employed to optimize the microwave extraction of TPSL. From response surface plots, microwave power, extraction time and ethanol proportion exhibited independent and interactive effects on the extraction of TPSL. The optimal conditions to obtain the highest recovery of TPSL were as follows: microwave power, 302W; extraction time, 123s; ethanol proportion, 53% (v/v). Under these optimal conditions, the experimental values agreed with the predicted ones by analysis of variance. It indicated high fitness of the model used and the success of response surface methodology for optimizing TPSL extraction. After method development, the antioxidant activity of the MAE extract was preliminarily evaluated. MAE showed obvious advantages in terms of high extraction efficiency and antioxidant activity of extract with in shortest extraction time.

Abstract:Ginkgo biloba flavone glycosides have high values of health care and drug. They are extracted by microwave . Compared with traditional solvent extraction, this method is simpler and have some advantages of less time, lower cost, higher extractive ratio. This method can be used in wider fields, enhances greatly the content of flavone and saves solvent. The results is excellent within only 5 min by microwave radiation and 1.5 h by extraction. The extractive ratio can reach 0.536 % weight of the fresh ginkgo leaves which is 2.2 times of traditional method.

Abstract:A microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technology optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) was established to extract phenolic compounds from the fruit of Melastoma sanguineum. The effects of solvent composition, ratio of solvent to material, temperature, time and microwave power on phenol yield were evaluated in single-factor tests. The three parameters exerting main impacts on phenol yield were further optimized by RSM. Under optimal extraction conditions (31.33% ethanol, solvent/material ratio of 32.21 mL/g, 52.24 °C, 45 min and 500 W), the total phenolic content was 39.02 ± 0.73 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW). This MAE method performed better in comparison with two conventional methods, those being maceration (25.79 ± 1.03 mg GAE/g DW) and Soxhlet extraction (18.40 ± 1.34 mg GAE/g DW), using lower process temperature, shorter irradiation time, and lower organic solvent consumption. In addition, five flavonoids (epicatechin gallate, epicatechin, rutin, pigallocatechin and quercetin) and two phenolic acids (protocatechuic acid and chlorogenic acid) in the extract were identified and quantified using UPLC-MS/MS.

Abstract:Zingiberene oil (C 15 H 24 )) is one of diversification products which has a high level of economic values. However, the rate of export number toward the export number has just recently attained 0,3% . Moreover the number of ginger oil as the export product does not fulfill the export standart, such as the Essential Oil Association of USA (EOA). This condition happens since the Hydro Distillation is applied as one of the method in refining process. Nevertheless, this method is considered the best method in refining process although it takes more time to gain the result of the refining process. Another extraction process is called as Microwave Distillation and Simultaneous Solid-Phase Microextraction (MDSS-PM). By applying this method, the total time estimation is reduced significantly, but the final result in refining process is not as good as by applying Hydro Distillation. This research applies Microwave Distillation as the extraction process of white ginger. Furthermore, this kinds of method is modified in such a way by adding optical ultrasonic (MUSDf). The variable used in this research is Steam Diffusion (SDf), Microwave Extraction (ME), Microwave Steam Diffusion (MSDf), Microwave Ultrasonic Steam Diffusion (MUSDf). Moreover, this result takes 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 minutes. Furthermore, the extraction temperature is 90, 95, 100 dan 105 o C. The final research shows that MUSDf is considered the best method in extracting the ginger oil with the yield result about 0,952% and zingiberene 6,38%. Hence, the total price for each essential oil costs Rp 17.964 by gaining 100 o C of the optimum extraction temperature.

Abstract:Ginger, which is the rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, is widely distributed and consumed. The taste and aroma of ginger differ depending on its geographical origin. To distinguish the origin of ginger, ginger extracts from Korea, Peru, and China were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for metabolomics. Korean ginger contained more 10-gingerol, and Peruvian ginger contained more 6-gingerol and 8-gingerol. Several amino acids negatively correlated with gingerols, suggesting that amino acids are related to the biosynthesis of gingerols. Sugars, which are the main energy source, positively correlated with gingerols. Organic acids and gingerols were also positively correlated, indicating that both organic acids and gingerols are used for adaptation to the environment surrounding the root. We confirmed the features of the primary and secondary metabolites by verifying the correlation between metabolites and differences in metabolites according to ginger origin. We additionally optimized a simultaneous UPLC analytical method of marker compounds for the simple and rapid quality control of ginger. This method exhibits excellent linearity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Using metabolomics, differences in origin were observed, and a low-end equipment analysis method for quality control can be used in the ginger industry.

Abstract:Since α-mangostin in mangosteen fruits was reported to be the main compound able to provide natural antioxidants, the microwave-assisted extraction process to obtain high-quality α-mangostin from mangosteen pericarp (Garcinia mangostana L.) was optimized using a central composite design and response surface methodology. The parameters examined included extraction time, microwave power, and solvent percentage. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of optimized and non-optimized extracts was evaluated. Ethyl acetate as a green solvent exhibited the highest concentration of α-mangostin, followed by dichloromethane, ethanol, and water. The highest α-mangostin concentration in mangosteen pericarp of 121.01 mg/g dry matter (DM) was predicted at 3.16 min, 189.20 W, and 72.40% (v/v). The verification of experimental results under these optimized conditions showed that the α-mangostin value for the mangosteen pericarp was 120.68 mg/g DM. The predicted models were successfully developed to extract α-mangostin from the mangosteen pericarp. No significant differences were observed between the predicted and the experimental α-mangostin values, indicating that the developed models are accurate. The analysis of the extracts for secondary metabolites showed that the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) increased significantly in the optimized extracts (OE) compared to the non-optimized extracts (NOE). Additionally, trans-ferulic acid and catechin were abundant among the compounds identified. In addition, the optimized extract of mangosteen pericarp with its higher α-mangostin and secondary metabolite concentrations exhibited higher antioxidant activities with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 20.64 μg/mL compared to those of the NOE (28.50 μg/mL). The OE exhibited the highest antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria. In this study, the microwave-assisted extraction process of α-mangostin from mangosteen pericarp was successfully optimized, indicating the accuracy of the models developed, which will be usable in a larger-scale extraction process.

Abstract:A detailed procedure to extract ginsenoside R-b1, ginsenoside R-c, and ginsenoside R-d from Panax quinquefolium L. was developed by using at! obturated microwave assisted extraction (MAE) device with a pressure controlling unit. The compounds were analyzed by HPLC. The major parameters that influence the extraction efficiency were optimized. Ethanol, 50%, 1:40 solid/liquid ratio, 100-140 mesh particle sample size, and 3 min extraction time were chosen. MAE was 60 times more efficient in operation time than that of the Soxhlet extraction, and 20 times more efficient than that of the ultrasonic extraction. The solvent consumption also was greatly reduced. MAE was proven to be a rapid and reliable sample preparation method for ginsenosides.
