Abstract:High efficiency lunate-tail swimming with high-aspect-ratio lifting surfaces has evolved in many vertebrate lineages, from fish to cetaceans. Baleen whales (Mysticeti) are the largest swimming animals that exhibit this locomotor strategy, and present an ideal study system to examine how morphology and the kinematics of swimming scale to the largest body sizes. We used data from whale-borne inertial sensors coupled with morphometric measurements from aerial drones to calculate the hydrodynamic performance of oscillatory swimming in six baleen whale species ranging in body length from 5 to 25 m (fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus; Bryde's whale, Balaenoptera edeni; sei whale, Balaenoptera borealis; Antarctic minke whale, Balaenoptera bonaerensis; humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae; and blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus). We found that mass-specific thrust increased with both swimming speed and body size. Froude efficiency, defined as the ratio of useful power output to the rate of energy input ( Sloop, 1978), generally increased with swimming speed but decreased on average with increasing body size. This finding is contrary to previous results in smaller animals, where Froude efficiency increased with body size. Although our empirically parameterized estimates for swimming baleen whale drag were higher than those of a simple gliding model, oscillatory locomotion at this scale exhibits generally high Froude efficiency as in other adept swimmers. Our results quantify the fine-scale kinematics and estimate the hydrodynamics of routine and energetically expensive swimming modes at the largest scale.

Abstract:In this study, we report the first allometric equations relating gait parameters and swimming speed to body size for fish employing pectoral fin locomotion. Comparisons of locomotor kinematics and performance among striped surfperch (Teleostei: Embiotocidae) are made at the pectoralcaudal gait transition speed (Up-c). Up-c is considered to elicit physiologically equivalent levels of exercise in animals varying over 100-fold in body mass (Mb) by virtue of dynamically similar pectoral fin movements (constant duty factor, length-specific stride length and fin-beat amplitude) and size-independent propulsive efficiency. At Up-c, pectoral fin-beat frequency scales in proportion to Mb-0.12±0.03, a size-dependence consistent with that observed for stride frequency in fishes swimming by axial undulatory propulsion and in many running tetrapods. It is proposed that the similarity in the scaling of frequency in these vertebrate groups reflects an underlying similarity in the allometry of the maximal velocity of muscle shortening. Absolute Up-c (m s-1) generally increases with body size, but the fastest speeds are not exhibited by the largest animals. A pattern of declining performance in fish 23 cm in standard length and longer may be related to their disproportionately small fin areas and aspect ratios. The pronounced negative allometry of Up-c expressed as standard body lengths per second indicates that a given length-specific speed does not induce comparable levels of activity in large and small fish. Thus, normalization of swimming speed to body length may not be a sufficient correction for kinematic comparisons across size.

Abstract:A recurring question in the study of fish biomechanics and energetics is the mechanical power required for tail-swimming at the high speeds seen among aquatic vertebrates. The quest for answers has been driven by conceptual advances in fluid dynamics, starting with ideas on the boundary layer and drag initiated by Prandtl, and in measurement techniques starting with force balances focussing on drag and thrust. Drag (=thrust) from measurements on physical models, carcasses, kinematics as inputs to hydromechanical models, and physiological power sources vary from less than that expected for an equivalent rigid reference to over an order of magnitude greater. Estimates of drag and thrust using recent advances largely made possible by increased computing power have not resolved the discrepancy. Sources of drag and thrust are not separable in axial undulatory self propulsion, are open to interpretation and Froude efficiency is zero. Wakes are not easily interpreted, especially for thrust evaluation. We suggest the best measures of swimming performance are velocity and power consumption for which 2D inviscid simulations can give realistic predictions. Steady swimming power is several times that required for towing an equivalent flat plate at the same speed.

Abstract:Significance Hydrodynamic theory predicts that the energetic costs required for fishes to swim should vary with speed according to a U-shaped curve, with an expected energetic minimum at intermediate cruising speeds. Empirical studies to date do not support this view. Here we report a complete dataset on a swimming batoid fish that shows a clear energetic minimum at intermediate swimming speeds. We also demonstrate that this species uses a combination of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism to fuel steady swimming at each speed, including the slowest speeds tested. This contradicts the widespread assumption that fish use only aerobic metabolism at low speeds. Kinematic data support this nonlinear relationship by also showing a U-shaped pattern to body angle during steady swimming.

Abstract:Many animals moving through fluids exhibit highly coordinated group movement that is thought to reduce the cost of locomotion. However, direct energetic measurements demonstrating the energy-saving benefits of fluid-mediated collective movements remain elusive. By characterizing both aerobic and anaerobic metabolic energy contributions in schools of giant danio ( Devario aequipinnatus ), we discovered that fish schools have a concave upward shaped metabolism–speed curve, with a minimum metabolic cost at ~1 body length s -1 . We demonstrate that fish schools reduce total energy expenditure (TEE) per tail beat by up to 56% compared to solitary fish. When reaching their maximum sustained swimming speed, fish swimming in schools had a 44% higher maximum aerobic performance and used 65% less non-aerobic energy compared to solitary individuals, which lowered the TEE and total cost of transport by up to 53%, near the lowest recorded for any aquatic organism. Fish in schools also recovered from exercise 43% faster than solitary fish. The non-aerobic energetic savings that occur when fish in schools actively swim at high speed can considerably improve both peak and repeated performance which is likely to be beneficial for evading predators. These energetic savings may underlie the prevalence of coordinated group locomotion in fishes.

Abstract:Energetic expenditure is an important factor in animal locomotion. Here we test the hypothesis that fishes control tail-beat kinematics to optimize energetic expenditure during undulatory swimming. We focus on two energetic indices used in swimming hydrodynamics, cost of transport and Froude efficiency. To rule out one index in favour of another, we use computational-fluid dynamics models to compare experimentally observed fish kinematics with predicted performance landscapes and identify energy-optimized kinematics for a carangiform swimmer, an anguilliform swimmer and larval fishes. By locating the areas in the predicted performance landscapes that are occupied by actual fishes, we found that fishes use combinations of tail-beat frequency and amplitude that minimize cost of transport. This energy-optimizing strategy also explains why fishes increase frequency rather than amplitude to swim faster, and why fishes swim within a narrow range of Strouhal numbers. By quantifying how undulatory-wave kinematics affect thrust, drag, and power, we explain why amplitude and frequency are not equivalent in speed control, and why Froude efficiency is not a reliable energetic indicator. These insights may inspire future research in aquatic organisms and bioinspired robotics using undulatory propulsion.

Abstract:The size scaling of energy expenditure during locomotion has long puzzled researchers seeking biological invariants. Existing data, most of it from animals smaller than 200 kg, show that the mass specific mechanical work of locomotion is nearly independent of size, yet the metabolic cost of locomotion decreases with increasing size. Major questions remain concerning heavier animals: extrapolating mechanical work and metabolic cost to animals the size of an elephant comes to the uncomfortable conclusion that elephants would produce more energy than they would consume. Our study addresses this longstanding size-scaling conundrum by focusing on the locomotion mechanics and energetics of elephants, the largest extant land animals. In this study, the work required to move the limbs relative to the centre of mass of the whole body ( ) was measured in 27 Asian elephants (872-4000 kg). The total mechanical work was calculated by adding the external work required to maintain the movements the . Our investigation challenges the belief that mass-specific mechanical work of locomotion is independent of size. Furthermore, our study unveils a surprising aspect of elephant locomotion—the substantial fraction of total mechanical work dedicated to limb swinging. At high speeds, elephants allocate ∼75% of their work to limb swinging. Also, by quantifying the metabolic cost and mechanical work, we provide the first estimation of the efficiency of converting metabolic energy into mechanical work in elephants. Elephants exhibit an efficiency of at best 45%, which is similar to that in other large mammals such as horses and humans. This study not only addresses a significant gap in our understanding of size scaling in locomotion but also opens new avenues for exploring the evolution of energy expenditure across diverse animal sizes.

Abstract:Anguilliform swimmers, like eels or lampreys, are highly efficient swimmers. Key to understanding their performances is the relationship between the body's kinematics and resulting swimming speed and efficiency. But, we cannot prescribe kinematics to living fish, and it is challenging to measure their power consumption. Here, we characterise the swimming speed and cost of transport of a free-swimming undulatory bio-inspired robot as we vary its kinematic parameters, including joint amplitude, body wavelength, and frequency. We identify a trade-off between speed and efficiency. Speed, in terms of stride length, increases for increasing maximum tail angle, described by the newly proposed specific tail amplitude and reaches a maximum value around the specific tail amplitude of unity. Efficiency, in terms of the cost of transport, is affected by the whole-body motion. Cost of transport decreases for increasing travelling wave-like kinematics, and lower specific tail amplitudes. Our results suggest that live eels tend to choose efficiency over speed and provide insights into the key characteristics affecting undulatory swimming performance.

Metabolic allometric scaling of multicellular organisms as a product of evolutionary development and optimization of food chains

Abstract:Production of energy is a foundation of life. Metabolic rate of organisms (amount of energy produced per unit time) generally increases slower than organisms' mass, which has important implications for life organization. This phenomenon, when considered across different taxa, is called interspecific allometric scaling. Its origin has puzzled scientists for many decades, and still is considered unknown. In this paper we posit that natural selection, as determined by evolutionary pressures, leads to distribution of resources, and accordingly energy, within a food chain, which is optimal from the perspective of stability of the food chain, when each species has sufficient amount of resources for continuous reproduction, but not too much to jeopardize existence of other species. Metabolic allometric scaling is then a quantitative representation of this optimal distribution. Taking locomotion and the primary mechanism for distribution of energy, we developed a biomechanical model to find energy expenditures, considering limb length, skeleton mass and speed. Using the interspecific allometric exponents for these three measures and substituting into the locomotion-derived model for energy expenditure, we calculated allometric exponents for mammals, reptiles, fish and birds, and compared these values with allometric exponents derived from experimental observations. The calculated allometric exponents were nearly identical to experimentally observed exponents for mammals, and very close for fish, reptiles and the basal metabolic rate of birds. The main result of the study is that the metabolic allometric scaling is a function of a mechanism of optimal energy distribution between the species of a food chain. This optimized sharing of common resources provides stability of a food chain for a given habitat and is guided by evolutionary pressures and natural selection.

Abstract:Examples of animals evolving similar traits despite the absence of that trait in the last common ancestor, such as the wing and camera-type lens eye in vertebrates and invertebrates, are called cases of convergent evolution. Instances of convergent evolution of locomotory patterns that quantitatively agree with the mechanically optimal solution are very rare. Here, we show that, with respect to a very diverse group of aquatic animals, a mechanically optimal method of swimming with elongated fins has evolved independently at least eight times in both vertebrate and invertebrate swimmers across three different phyla. Specifically, if we take the length of an undulation along an animal's fin during swimming and divide it by the mean amplitude of undulations along the fin length, the result is consistently around twenty. We call this value the optimal specific wavelength (OSW). We show that the OSW maximizes the force generated by the body, which also maximizes swimming speed. We hypothesize a mechanical basis for this optimality and suggest reasons for its repeated emergence through evolution.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to compare the state of health of the inhabitants of the countryside and city dwellers in the Łódź province, measured with the real and standardized death rate and years of life lost, as well as the analysis of causes of deaths distinguishing these two populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study material included a database containing information gathered from 313,144 death certificates of the inhabitants of Łódź province who died between 1999-2008. Real and standardized death rates were determined. The standardization was carried out by a direct method. The Standard Expected Years of Life Lost (SEYLL method) was used to compute years of life lost. Analysis of time trends of death rates and life span in the Łódź province was conducted with jointpoint models. The intensity of mortality computed with standardized death rates in the province was higher in the countryside than in the city. RESULTS In 2008, the standardized death rate in the countryside was 904.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, and in the city - 903.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. Inhabitants of the countryside more often died of cardiovascular diseases (SDR=418.7 vs. 367.9) and from external causes (SDR=90.2 vs. 63); those from the city and towns died from malignant neoplasms (SDR=204.5 vs. 195.6) and diseases of the alimentary tract (SDR=55.6 vs. 34.6). In 2008, SEYLL calculation for 1,000 people was 204 years for the inhabitants of the city and towns and 190 years for the inhabitants of the countryside. CONCLUSION It is necessary to introduce more effective prophylactic and health promoting activities in order to lessen the differences in the state of health state in the Łódź province and the rest of the country.
A method for finding distribution of metabolic energy between organismal functions: application to birds' energy expenditures to counteract gravity and to support steady and short flights

Abstract:Production of energy (metabolism) and its distribution is vital for living organisms, both at individual level - between different functions of an organism, as well as between species of communities at different organizational levels, including food chains. Here, a new general method for finding distribution of metabolic energy between different organismal functions is proposed. The method is based on earlier discoveries (in two independent studies, for multicellular and unicellular organisms) that metabolic allometric scaling is the result of natural selection guided by optimization of distribution of common resources between the species of a food chain. This distribution is established in such a way that it secures amount of resources for each species to reproduce in sufficient quantities (sufficient for preservation of a food chain), while not allowing some species acquiring too many resources to jeopardize existence of other species they prey on or share common resources with. The introduced method was applied to birds, including both steady and short flights modes. Birds' metabolism has specifics, because besides other functions, it has to compensate force of gravity during the flight. However, this parameter is difficult to find, while such data is important for ecological studies at population and individual levels. We discovered increase of fraction of metabolic power required to compensate force of gravity with mass increase, which is a principal factor, restricting maximum possible mass of flying animals. The obtained results show efficiency of a proposed method for detailed studies of animals' metabolism, physiology, and of population ecology.

Dynamic similarity and the peculiar allometry of maximum running speed

Abstract:Abstract Animal performance fundamentally influences behaviour, ecology, and evolution. It typically varies monotonously with size. A notable exception is maximum running speed; the fastest animals are of intermediate size. Here we show that this peculiar allometry results from the competition between two musculoskeletal constraints: the kinetic energy capacity, which dominates in small animals, and the work capacity, which reigns supreme in large animals. The ratio of both capacities defines the physiological similarity index Γ, a dimensionless number akin to the Reynolds number in fluid mechanics. The scaling of Γ indicates a transition from a dominance of muscle forces to a dominance of inertial forces as animals grow in size; its magnitude defines conditions of “dynamic similarity“ that enable comparison and estimates of locomotor performance across extant and extinct animals; and the physical parameters that define it highlight opportunities for adaptations in musculoskeletal “design” that depart from the eternal null hypothesis of geometric similarity. The physiological similarity index challenges the Froude number as prevailing dynamic similarity condition, reveals that the differential growth of muscle and weight forces central to classic scaling theory is of secondary importance for the majority of terrestrial animals, and suggests avenues for comparative analyses of locomotor systems.

Abstract:Theory and modelling remain central to improving our understanding of undulatory and oscillatory swimming. Simple models based on added mass can help to give great insight into the mechanics of undulatory swimming, as demonstrated by animals such as eels, stingrays and knifefish. To understand the swimming of oscillatory swimmers such as tuna and dolphins, models need to consider both added mass forces and circulatory forces. For all types of swimming, experiments and theory agree that the most important velocity scale is the characteristic lateral velocity of the tail motion rather than the swimming speed, which erases to a large extent the difference between results obtained in a tethered mode, compared to those obtained using a free swimming condition. There is no one-to-one connection between the integrated swimming performance and the details of the wake structure, in that similar levels of efficiency can occur with very different wake structures. Flexibility and viscous effects play crucial roles in determining the efficiency, and for isolated propulsors changing the profile shape can significantly improve both thrust and efficiency. Also, combined heave and pitch motions with an appropriate phase difference are essential to achieve high performance. Reducing the aspect ratio will always reduce thrust and efficiency, but its effects are now reasonably well understood. Planform shape can have an important mitigating influence, as do non-sinusoidal gaits and intermittent actuation.

Scaling Laws for the Intermittent Swimming Performance of a Flexible Plate at Low Reynolds Number

Abstract:Many species of fish and birds travel in intermittent style, yet the combined influence of intermittency and other body kinematics on the hydrodynamics of a self-propelled swimmer is not fully understood. By formulating a reduced-order dynamical model for intermittent swimming, we uncover scaling laws that link the propulsive performance (cursing Reynolds number Re c , thrust T̄, input power P̄ and cost of transport COT to body kinematics (duty cycle DC , flapping Reynolds number Re f ). By comparing the derived scaling laws with the data from several previous studies and our numerical simulation, we demonstrate the validity of the theory. In addition, we found that Re c , T̄, P̄ and COT all increase with the increase of DC , Re f . The model also reveals that the intermittent swimming may not be inherently more energy efficient than continuous swimming, depending on the ratio of drag coefficients between active bursting and coasting.
Using a robotic platform to study the influence of relative tailbeat phase on the energetic costs of side-by-side swimming in fish

Abstract:A potential benefit of swimming together in coordinated schools is to allow fish to extract energy from vortices shed by their neighbours, thus reducing the costs of locomotion. This hypothesis has been very hard to test in real fish schools, and it has proven very difficult to replicate the complex hydrodynamics at relevant Reynolds numbers using computational simulations. A complementary approach, and the one we adopt here, is to develop and analyse the performance of biomimetic autonomous robotic models that capture the salient kinematics of fish-like swimming, and also interact via hydrodynamic forces. We developed bio-inspired robotic fish which perform sub-carangiform locomotion, and measured the speed and power consumption of robots when swimming in isolation and when swimming side-by-side in pairs. We found that swimming side-by-side confers a substantial increase in both the speed and efficiency of locomotion of both fish regardless of the relative phase relationship of their body undulations. However, we also find that each individual can slightly increase their own power efficiency if they change relative tailbeat phase by approximately 0.25 π with respect to, and at the energetic expense of, their neighbour. This suggests the possibility of a competitive game-theoretic dynamic between individuals in swimming groups. Our results also demonstrate the potential applicability of our platform, and provide a natural connection between the biology and robotics of collective motion.

Abstract:Micro-organisms expend energy moving through complex media. While propulsion speed is an important property of locomotion, efficiency is another factor that may determine the swimming gait adopted by a micro-organism in order to locomote in an energetically favorable manner. The efficiency of swimming in a Newtonian fluid is well characterized for different biological and artificial swimmers. However, these swimmers often encounter biological fluids displaying shear-thinning viscosities. Little is known about how this nonlinear rheology influences the efficiency of locomotion. Does the shear-thinning rheology render swimming more efficient or less? How does the swimming efficiency depend on the propulsion mechanism of a swimmer and rheological properties of the surrounding shear-thinning fluid? In this work, we address these fundamental questions on the efficiency of locomotion in a shear-thinning fluid by considering the squirmer model as a general locomotion model to represent different types of swimmers. Our analysis reveals how the choice of surface velocity distribution on a squirmer may reduce or enhance the swimming efficiency. We determine optimal shear rates at which the swimming efficiency can be substantially enhanced compared with the Newtonian case. The nontrivial variations of swimming efficiency prompt questions on how micro-organisms may tune their swimming gaits to exploit the shear-thinning rheology. The findings also provide insights into how artificial swimmers should be designed to move through complex media efficiently.

These technologies have limitations related to speed, efficiency, maneuverability, and prolonged operation in ocean environments. To address and overcome these limitations, systems are being developed utilizing bio-inspired features and different swim modes. This leads to an issue where there is not a consistent measure with which can accurately predict the performance of platforms across many different swim modes. One widely used metric is the Cost of Transport over Reynolds number and displacements, in the form of a scaling law, which is a measure of the energy used for any given operation, but is highly dependent on the swimming mode and geometry of the platform. More recently, the Swim number was introduced that unifies the kinematics and fluid properties of many different aquatic animals and swim modes under a single scaling law. In this work, we introduce a Swim number for propeller driven autonomous swimmers as a unified performance metric. We review the Cost of Transport and Swim number for biological, bio-inspired, and conventional swimmers and provide new scaling laws. The analysis shows that both performance metrics taken together, Cost of Transport and Swim Number, are convenient when designing and comparing natural and artificial swimmers.

Abstract:(iTTP)” defined as TTP with ADAMTS13 activity of less than 5% and/or presence of an ADAMTS13 inhibitor and warmer weather. In this population, the combined incidence of iTTP in the summer and the fall was more than twice that of spring and winter. In their initial iTTP patients, 73% were diagnosed from June to November. Interestingly, when they examined TTP patients without ADAMTS13 activity of less than 5% and/or presence of an ADAMTS13 inhibitor, a group they called “clinical TTP (cTTP),” they did not see a seasonal variation. George and Vesley did not see a significant increase in initial TTP-HUS cases in the summer unlike our group, Karimi and coworkers, and Hsu and coworkers. A number of factors could account for the difference. First, if there is a seasonal variation, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Iran all experience different weather and very likely, different pathogens at different times. Second, we focused on all occurrence of idiopathic TTP, both initial and relapse cases whereas George and Vesley only looked at initial cases. If there is a seasonal factor or certain seasonal infection causing the TTP, one would expect both more cases of initial and relapse cases during this time. George and Vesley also mentioned the possibility of referral bias since UNC is not the only apheresis provider in North Carolina, which is indeed possible. In conclusion, although the seasonal variation of initial TTP was not seen in the Oklahoma TTP-HUS Registry, we did see a summer predominance in idiopathic TTP patients treated at UNC, in both initial presentations and all idiopathic presentations as well as TTP patients with a severe ADAMTS13 deficiency.
