Abstract:This expository article sets forth a self-contained and purely algebraic proof of a deep result of Quillen stating that the category of simplicial commutative algebras over a commutative ring is a model category. This is accomplished by starting from the model structure on the category of connective chain complexes, transferring it to the category of simplicial modules via Dold-Kan Correspondence, and further transferring it to the category of simplicial commutative algebras through Quillen-Kan Transfer Machine. The subtlety of overcoming the acyclicity condition is addressed by introducing and studying the shuffle product of connective chain complexes, establishing a variant of Eilenberg-Zilber Theorem, and carefully scrutinizing the subtle structures under study.

Abstract:A general method for lifting weak factorization systems in a category S to model category structures on simplicial objects in S is described, analogously to the lifting of cotorsion pairs in Abelian categories to model category structures on chain complexes. This generalizes Quillen's original treatment of (projective) model category structures on simplicial objects. As a new application we show that there is always a model category structure on simplicial objects in the coproduct completion of any (even large) category S with finite limits, which - if S is small - defines the same homotopy theory as any global model category of simplicial pre-sheaves on S. If S is, in addition, extensive, a similar model category structure exists on simplicial objects in S itself. In any case the associated left derivator exists on all diagrams despite the lack of colimits in the original category.

Generalizing quasi-categories via model structures on simplicial sets

Abstract:We use Cisinski's machinery to construct and study model structures on the category of simplicial sets whose classes of fibrant objects generalize quasi-categories. We identify a lifting condition which captures the homotopical behavior of quasi-categories without the algebraic aspects and show that there is a model structure whose fibrant objects are precisely those which satisfy this condition. We also identify a localization of this model structure whose fibrant objects satisfy a "special horn lifting" condition similar to the one satisfied by quasi-categories. This special horn model structure leads to a conjecture characterization of the bijective-on-0-simplices trivial cofibrations of the Joyal model structure. We also discuss how these model structures all relate to one another and to the minimal model structure.

Simplicial $C_2$-Isovariant Homotopy

Abstract:This article presents a novel approach to construct a model category structure designed to model the homotopy theory of spaces equipped with an action by the group $C_2$, where morphisms are considered to be isovariant. Our methodology centers on simplicial techniques. We replace the conventional simplex category $\Delta$ with a modified category $C_2 \Delta$ and then delve into the study of presheaves of sets on $C_2 \Delta$. To establish the model category structure we employ Cisinski's methods for model structures in categories of presheaves. In particular, we use an analogous idea to the one employed by Cisinski and Moerdjik in the construction of a model category structure for Dendroidal Sets (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0902.1954" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0902.1954">arXiv:0902.1954</a>). Our approach distinguishes itself from prior work, such as Yeakel's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1907.12135" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1907.12135">arXiv:1907.12135</a>) which primarily focuses on a more topological context and, brings a new perspective to the study of isovariant homotopy theory for $C_2$-spaces.

Simplicial Structure on Connected Multiplicative Operads

Abstract:In these notes, we define a new simplicial structure on a connected multiplicative operad and call it connected multiplicative simplicial operad (for short; simplicial operad). Next we introduce on this simplicial operad a brace algebra structure analogous to that of Gerstenhaber-Voronov that we call right brace algebra structure. This permits us to obtain on the operad with the above mentioned properties a bicomplex structure one of whose two differential operators is a coboundary and the other one is a boundary. Moreover we define on one hand on the above simplicial operad together with its right brace algebra structure, two distinct products up to a sign respectively called dot-product and odot-product. Then we show that the coboundary and the boundary together with the odot-product provide to this simplicial operad two distinct differential graded algebra structures. On the other hand we obtain through the Alexander-Withney map, a differential graded coalgebra structure on a simplicial operad. We end by illustrating our constructions with some examples

Abstract:We define a category $\mathsf{List}$ whose objects are sets and morphisms are mappings which assign to an element in the domain an ordered sequence (list) of elements in the codomain. We introduce and study a category of simplicial objects $\mathsf{slist}$ whose objects are functors $\Delta^{op} \to \mathsf{List}$, which we call simplicial lists, and morphisms are natural transformations which have functions as components. We demonstrate that $\mathsf{sList}$ supports the combinatorics of (non-symmetric) operads by constructing a fully-faithful nerve functor $N^l : \mathsf{Operad} \to \mathsf{sList}$ from the category of operads. This leads to a reasonable model for the theory of non-symmetric $\infty$-operads.

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets are presheaves on a rich category of shapes, whose definition is motivated by combinatorial topology and higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. These shapes include representatives of oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes, and are stable under operations including Gray products, joins, suspensions, and duals. We exhibit a cofibrantly generated model structure on diagrammatic sets, as well as two separate Quillen equivalences with the classical model structure on simplicial sets. We construct explicit sets of generating cofibrations and acyclic cofibrations, and prove that the model structure is monoidal with the Gray product of diagrammatic sets.

Homological algebra of semimodules and semicontramodules: Semi-infinite homological algebra of associative algebraic structures

Abstract:We develop the basic constructions of homological algebra in the (appropriately defined) unbounded derived categories of modules over algebras over coalgebras over noncommutative rings (which we call semialgebras over corings). We define double-sided derived functors SemiTor and SemiExt of the functors of semitensor product and semihomomorphisms, and construct an equivalence between the exotic derived categories of semimodules and semicontramodules. Certain (co)flatness and/or (co)projectivity conditions have to be imposed on the coring and semialgebra to make the module categories abelian (and the cotensor product associative). Besides, for a number of technical reasons we mostly have to assume that the basic ring has a finite homological dimension (no such assumptions about the coring and semialgebra are made). In the final sections we construct model category structures on the categories of complexes of semi(contra)modules, and develop relative nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory for filtered semialgebras and quasi-differential corings. Our motivating examples come from the semi-infinite cohomology theory. Comparison with the semi-infinite (co)homology of Tate Lie algebras and graded associative algebras is established in appendices, and the semi-infinite homology of a locally compact topological group relative to an open profinite subgroup is defined. An application to the correspondence between complexes of representations of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra on the complementary central charge levels ($c$ and $26-c$ for the Virasoro) is worked out.

Denotational semantics driven simplicial homology?

Abstract:We look at the proofs of a fragment of Linear Logic as a whole: in fact, Linear Logic's coherent semantics interprets the proofs of a given formula $A$ as faces of an abstract simplicial complex, thus allowing us to see the set of the (interpretations of the) proofs of $A$ as a geometrical space, not just a set. This point of view has never been really investigated. For a ``webbed'' denotational semantics -- say the relational one --, it suffices to down-close the set of (the interpretations of the) proofs of $A$ in order to give rise to an abstract simplicial complex whose faces do correspond to proofs of $A$. Since this space comes triangulated by construction, a natural geometrical property to consider is its homology. However, we immediately stumble on a problem: if we want the homology to be invariant w.r.t. to some notion of type-isomorphism, we are naturally led to consider the homology functor acting, at the level of morphisms, on ``simplicial relations'' rather than simplicial maps as one does in topology. The task of defining the homology functor on this modified category can be achieved by considering a very simple monad, which is almost the same as the power-set monad; but, doing so, we end up considering not anymore the homology of the original space, but rather of its transformation under the action of the monad. Does this transformation keep the homology invariant ? Is this transformation meaningful from a geometrical or logical/computational point of view ?

However, with the increasing prominence of higher categorical methods in a wide range of applications, it is important for researchers in a range of fields to have a good working knowledge of them. This paper is intended as an introduction to simplicial sets, both as an overview of their development from other concepts, and as a user's guide for someone wanting to read modern literature that makes use of them.

Abstract:Many special classes of simplicial sets, such as the nerves of categories or groupoids, the 2-Segal sets of Dyckerhoff and Kapranov, and the (discrete) decomposition spaces of Gálvez, Kock, and Tonks, are characterized by the property of sending certain commuting squares in the simplex category $\Delta$ to pullback squares of sets. We introduce weaker analogues of these properties called completeness conditions, which require squares in $\Delta$ to be sent to weak pullbacks of sets, defined similarly to pullback squares but without the uniqueness property of induced maps. We show that some of these completeness conditions provide a simplicial set with lifts against certain subsets of simplices first introduced in the theory of database design. We also provide reduced criteria for checking these properties using factorization results for pushouts squares in $\Delta$, which we characterize completely, along with several other classes of squares in $\Delta$. Examples of simplicial sets with completeness conditions include quasicategories, many of the compositories and gleaves of Flori and Fritz, and bar constructions for algebras of certain classes of monads. The latter is our motivating example.

Simplicial complexes defined on groups

Abstract:This paper makes some preliminary observations towards an extension of current work on graphs defined on groups to simplicial complexes. I define a variety of simplicial complexes on a group which are preserved by automorphisms of the group, and in many cases have a relation to familiar graphs on the group. The ones which seem to reach deepest into the graph structure are two forms of independence complex, and some results on the class of groups for which these two complexes coincide are given. Other examples are treated more briefly.

Abstract:We give a new characterization of partial groups as a subcategory of symmetric (simplicial) sets. This subcategory has an explicit reflection, which permits one to compute colimits in the category of partial groups. We also introduce the notion of a partial groupoid, which encompasses both groupoids and partial groups.

Abstract:The category of (colored) props is an enhancement of the category of colored operads, and thus of the category of small categories. In this paper, the second in a series on "higher props," we show that the category of all small colored simplicial props admits a cofibrantly generated model category structure. With this model structure, the forgetful functor from props to operads is a right Quillen functor.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a resolving and contravariantly finite subcategory of $\rm{mod}\mbox{-}\Lambda$, the category of finitely generated right $\Lambda$-modules. We associate to $\mathcal{X}$ the subcategory $\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{X}}(\Lambda)$ of the morphism category $\rm{H}(\Lambda)$ consisting of all monomorphisms $(A\stackrel{f}\rightarrow B)$ with $A, B$ and $\rm{Cok} \ f$ in $\mathcal{\mathcal{X}}$. Since $\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{X}}(\Lambda)$ is closed under extensions then it inherits naturally an exact structure from $\rm{H}(\Lambda)$. We will define two other different exact structures else than the canonical one on $\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{X}}(\Lambda)$, and the indecomposable projective (resp. injective) objects in the corresponding exact categories completely classified. Enhancing $\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{X}}(\Lambda)$ with the new exact structure provides a framework to construct a triangle functor. Let $\rm{mod}\mbox{-}\underline{\mathcal{X}}$ denote the category of finitely presented functors over the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{X}}$. We then use the triangle functor to show a triangle equivalence between the bounded derived category $\mathbb{D}^{\rm{b}}(\rm{mod}\mbox{-}\underline{\mathcal{X}})$ and a Verdier quotient of the bounded derived category of the associated exact category on $\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{X}}(\Lambda)$. Similar consideration is also given for the singularity category of $\rm{mod}\mbox{-}\underline{\mathcal{X}}$.

The simplicial coalgebra of chains under three different notions of weak equivalence

Abstract:We study the simplicial coalgebra of chains on a simplicial set with respect to three notions of weak equivalence. To this end, we construct three model structures on the category of reduced simplicial sets for any commutative ring R. The weak equivalences are given by: (1) an R-linearized version of categorical equivalences, (2) maps inducing an isomorphism on fundamental groups and an R-homology equivalence between universal covers, and (3) R-homology equivalences. Analogously, for any field F, we construct three model structures on the category of connected simplicial cocommutative F-coalgebras. The weak equivalences in this context are (1') maps inducing a quasi-isomorphism of dg algebras after applying the cobar functor, (2') maps inducing a quasi-isomorphism of dg algebras after applying a localized version of the cobar functor, and (3') quasi-isomorphisms. Building on previous work of Goerss in the context of (3)-(3'), we prove that, when F is algebraically closed, the simplicial F-coalgebra of chains defines a homotopically full and faithful left Quillen functor for each pair of model categories. More generally, when F is a perfect field, we compare the three pairs of model categories in terms of suitable notions of homotopy fixed points with respect to the absolute Galois group of F.

A distributive lattice of model structures relating to spectral sequences

Abstract:The $S$-model category structures on filtered chain complexes and bicomplexes were introduced by Cirici, Egas Santander, Livernet and Whitehouse and later generalised by this author. In this paper we show they are left proper, cellular and stable model categories. We use these properties and the Cellularization Principle of Greenlees and Shipley to show that an adjunction with right adjoint the product totalisation functor from bicomplexes to filtered chains is a Quillen equivalence. Combined with other known Quillen equivalences between filtered chains this shows these model categories all present the same homotopy category. We also construct a distributive lattice whose elements are the $S$-model categories of filtered chain complexes.
