Abstract:Iron oxide such as Fe3O4 is one of the promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) due to a high theoretical specific capacity of 924 mAh g−1. In practical, Fe3O4 nanoparticles with various morphologies generally have to be composited with carbonaceous matrices because of their low conductivity and huge lattice volume variation during charge-discharge process. In this work, nitrogen-enriched graphitic carbon encapsulated Fe3O4/Fe3C/Fe composite was first prepared using EDTA-Fe(III) sodium complex as the precursor. The composite exhibits a high reversible capacity of about 600 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1. Meanwhile, it demonstrates excellent rate capability and superior cycling stability due to a synergistic boosting effect of the embedded Fe3C/Fe nanoparticles, enriched nitrogen and highly graphitic carbon in the composite.

Enhanced Cycling Performance of Fe3O4–graphene Nanocomposite As an Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Fe3O4–graphene nanocomposite was prepared by a gas/liquid interface reaction. The structure and morphology of the Fe3O4–graphene nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical performances were evaluated in coin-type cells. Electrochemical tests show that the Fe3O4–22.7wt.% graphene nanocomposite exhibits much higher capacity retention with a large reversible specific capacity of 1048mAhg−1 (99% of the initial reversible specific capacity) at the 90th cycle in comparison with that of the bare Fe3O4 nanoparticles (only 226mAhg−1 at the 34th cycle). The enhanced cycling performance can be attributed to the facts that the graphene sheets distributed between the Fe3O4 nanoparticles can prevent the aggregation of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and the Fe3O4–graphene nanocomposite can provide buffering spaces against the volume changes of Fe3O4 nanoparticles during electrochemical cycling.
N-doped Graphitized Carbon-Coated Fe 2 O 3 Nanoparticles in Highly Graphitized Carbon Hollow Fibers for Advanced Lithium-ion Batteries Anodes

Abstract:Ferric oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) has become one of the most competitive candidates for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries anode materials due to its high theoretical reversible specific capacity (Cs, 1007 mAh g −1 ) and low price. However, the rapid capacity fading and poor rate performance deriving from drastic volume expansion (∼200 %), low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and poor electrical conductivity limit its application in LIBs. Herein, a novel encapsulation structure of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles has been developed. Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles inlaid in the shells of hollow highly graphitized carbon fibers are coated by N-doped graphitized carbon (GF-FeO@NGC) by a catalytic graphitization, oxidation route of Fe-based catalyst. The GF-FeO@NGC electrode shows the first specific discharge/charge capacities of 1355/974 mAh g −1 with high initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 72.0%, and excellent reversibility of lithiation/delithiation reaction. After 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , the GF-FeO@NGC electrode keeps a high reversible Cs of 918 mAh g −1 (retention of 94.3%) with a CE of 99.6%. It is noticeable that the GF-FeO@NGC electrode has good rate performance and robust cycling stability at high current density. After 300 cycles at 2 A g −1 , the Cs retention is up to 97.1% with a CE of 99.7%. These are far superior to those of the GF-FeO (without NGC coating) and the most reported Fe 2 O 3 -based electrode materials. The mechanism behind these phenomena are studied.

Abstract:The rational structural design of the anode material plays a vital role in the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a novel one-dimensional carbon based anode material, consisting of ultra-fine hollow Fe x O y nanoparticles (NPs) uniformly anchored on the porous N-doped carbon nanorods (donated as Fe x O y @PN-CNR) has been fabricated via electrospinning technique combined with controlled pyrolysis. Under the Kirkendall-type diffusion, Fe 3 C is transformed into hollow Fe x O y NPs. This unique structure could effectively prevent the aggregation, dissolution, and pulverization of iron oxide NPs, maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode. Additionally, it also provides a connected hierarchical conducting network with doped N for electron transport and offers abundant accessible porous channels for fast Li + diffusion. As a consequence, the resulting Fe x O y @PN-CNR composite delivers an ultra-high reversible specific capacity of 1198.6 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 over 100 cycles as anode in LIBs. Remarkably, a stable cycle life (800 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles with a nearly 100% coulombic efficiency) can be obtained even at a large rate of 5000 mA g −1 . The present study provides a promising strategy for the construction of nanostructured anode materials toward prominent electrochemical performance of LIBs.

Abstract:Using efficient and stable electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is critical for cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. Choosing a reasonable composite is also critical for obtaining LIBs anode with enhanced performance and stability [1]. Herein, an effective approach for encapsulating Fe2O3 and Co3O4 into nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Fe2O3-Co3O4/NPC) using metal organic frameworks as sacrificial templates is reported. Due to the good conductivity of the carbon material and the synergistic effect stemming from the two components, the electrode had good electron transfer rate, was rich in accessible active sites, and had excellent reaction kinetics. Based on these properties, the electrode was used as an anode for LIBs and found to have long-term stability of 621 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 1000 cycles, and superior rate performance of 406 mA h g−1 at 2.0 A g−1. Further, the work presents the assessment of synergistic effect of transition metal oxide anodes on the increase of LIBs performances.

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticle/graphene aerogel (Fe3O4/GA) composite is fabricated by a simple one-step liquid phase precipitation method without further heat-treatment. The reduction of graphene oxide, deposition of Fe3O4 nanoparticle and formation of 3D graphene nanosheet network can happen simultaneously during preparation process, guaranteeing the uniform distribution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of graphene nanosheets. The influence of the graphene amount in the Fe3O4/GA composites on electrochemical performance is investigated. The as-prepared Fe3O4/GA composite with a graphene content of 25% displays good electrochemical lithium storage performance (a high reversible capacity of 985 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles) and good rate capability (434 mAh g−1 at the current density as high as 2 A g−1). Moreover, the contribution of the pseudocapacitance capacity can explicate the origin of good rate capability of the Fe3O4/GA composite. This work demonstrates the great potential of Fe3O4/GA composite as an alternative anode material for the low-cost and high-performance lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:As the promising anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), transition metal oxides possess much higher theoretical lithium storage capacities than the commercially used graphite. However, the large volume variation during the lithium insertion/desertion processes and the relatively low electrical conductivity of transition metal oxides usually lead to poor battery performance, impeding their extensive use for LIBs. Here, we report the synthesis of a new type of nanocomposite consisting of Fe3O4 nanocrystals (NCs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which can be used as high-performance LIB anode materials. The nanocomposite is formed by hydrolysis of iron precursors in the presence of poly(acrylic acid)-functionalized CNTs (PAA-CNTs), resulting into Fe3O4 NCs which are firmly and uniformly attached to the CNT surface. When the as-formed nanocomposite is coated with a carbon layer by pyrolysis of the low-cost petroleum pitch, the nanocomposite electrodes exhibit significantly enhanced lithium storage capacities and cyclability. In particular, a reversible lithium storage capacity of 850 mAh g−1 is retained after 100 charge/discharge cycles at a current rate of 0.1C. In comparison, considerably poor battery performance is observed when the CNT- or carbon-free counterpart is used as the LIB anode.

Abstract:A facile single step solvothermal route has been developed to prepare a composite of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and graphene nanosheets. The synthetic protocol takes advantage of the ethylene glycol assisted partial reduction of Fe3+ species to form Fe3O4, the reduction of graphene oxide into graphene, and the preferential attachment of fine Fe3O4 nanoparticles onto graphene sheets in one step. No additional reductive agent or calcination step is needed, which favors an effective, operationally simple and low-cost preparation process. The cycling properties of Fe3O4/graphene nanocomposite have been evaluated by galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The effect of graphene additive ratios on electrochemical performance has been investigated. The results show that the nanocomposite with a moderate graphene content of 18.5 wt% integrates high reversible capacity and good cyclic stability, delivering a capacity of 750 mAh/g after 40 cycles at 50 mA/g. Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:Nanoscale metal oxides based binder-free electrodes have application prospects in the energy storage field. In this work, Fe(2)O(3)nanosheets composited with carbon matrix were prepared via the electrochemical deposition on the dopamine treated stainless steel substrate, followed by annealing treatment. The electrode delivers discharge capacity of 1242 mAh center dot g(-1)at 600 mA center dot g(-1)current density after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the electrode exhibited outstanding rate capability and its reversible capacity reaches to 960 mAh center dot g(-1)at 1800 mA center dot g(-1)current density. The properties of full-cells comprising LiFePO(4)cathode were also studied. The improved cycle performance could be attributed to high electronic, ionic conductivity and strong tolerance to volume change benefited from the unique nanostructure and amorphous carbon structure. This work may provide a facile and efficient method for the synthesis of high performance Fe(2)O(3)anode materials.
Graphene-Wrapped Fe3o4 Anode Material with Improved Reversible Capacity and Cyclic Stability for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A well-organized flexible interleaved composite of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) decorated with Fe3O4 particles was synthesized through in situ reduction of iron hydroxide between GNSs. The GNS/Fe3O4 composite shows a reversible specific capacity approaching 1026 mA h(-1) g(-1) after 30 cycles at 35 mA g(-1) 580 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 700 mA g(-1) as well as improved cyclic stability and excellent rate capability. The multifunctional features of the GNS/Fe3O4 composite are considered as follows: (i) GNSs play a "flexible confinement" function to enwrap Fe3O4 particles, which can compensate for the volume change of Fe3O4 and prevent the detachment and agglomeration of pulverized Fe3O4, thus extending the cycling life of the electrode; (ii) GNSs provide a large contact surface for individual dispersion of well-adhered Fe3O4 particles and act as an excellent conductive agent to provide a highway for electron transport, improving the accessible capacity; (iii) Fe3O4 particles separate GNSs and prevent their restacking thus improving the adsorption and immersion of electrolyte on the surface of electroactive material; and (iv) the porosity formed by lateral GNSs and Fe3O4 particles facilitates ion transportation. As a result, this unique laterally confined GNS/Fe3O4 composite can dramatically improve the cycling stability and the rate capability of Fe3O4 as an anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:FeCO3 has attracted increasing attention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high capacity, abundance and low cost. However, the poor electronic conductivity and slow ion diffusion dynamics of FeCO3 limit its rate performance. To address this issue, a FeCO3/nitrogen-doped carbon dot (FeCO3/N-CD) composite applied in LIBs is developed by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. It is found that the introduction of N-CD effectively inhibits the crystal growth and stacking of FeCO3, leading to the formation of a unique nanorod composite with hierarchical porous structure. Benefiting from the rational structure, the as-prepared FeCO3/N-CD composite shows significantly improved electrochemical performances when used as anode materials of LIBs. For example, a stable reversible capacity of 872 mA h g−1 after 460 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1 can be achieved, which is much higher than that of the pristine FeCO3. This study provides an efficient route to prepare advanced FeCO3-based composites for anode materials in high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Constructing free-standing electrodes with superior lithium storage capacity and good mechanical performance are fascinating for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, their practical application is hindered by complicated synthesis procedures and high cost. Herein, a highly stable, self-supporting and flexible electrode material for LIBs was constructed by encapsulating spherical FeNi nanoparticles into one-dimensional N-doped carbon fiber film (FeNi/N- CFM) using the electrospinning technique and subsequent heat treatment. The FeNi/N-CFM can be directly used as anode materials for LIBs without conductive additive, current collector and binder. The synergistic effect of uniformly dispersed small FeNi nanoparticles and three-dimensional (3D) conductive network constructed by CF framework effectively improves the utilization rate of active materials, enhances the transport of both electrons and lithium ions, facilitates the electrolyte penetration, and promotes the lithium-ion storage kinetics and stability, thus leading to a greatly enhanced electrochemical performance. Benefiting from the unique architectural feature and flexibility, the FeNi/N-CFM composites employed as binder-free electrodes for LIBs exhibit good lithium storage performance (an initial discharge capacity of 1031.5 mA h g −1 and a reversible capacity of 481.3 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles), rate capacity (305.1 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 ) and outstanding reversibility (coulombic efficiency of around 100 % after 100 cycles). Furthermore, this work also provides a facile and effective pathway to design and fabricate free-standing electrodes.

Abstract:The combination of carbon compositing and the proper choice of binders in one system offer an effective strategy for improving electrode performance for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we focus on the optimization of reduced graphene oxide content in NiFe2O4/reduced graphene oxide (abbreviated to NiFe2O4/rGO) composites and the proper choice of binders to enhance the cycling stability of the NiFe2O4 electrode. The NiFe2O4/rGO composites were fabricated by a hydrothermal-annealing method, in which the mean size of spinel NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was approximately 20 nm. When tested as anode materials for LIBs, the NiFe2O4/rGO electrodes with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) binder exhibited excellent lithium-storage performance including high reversible capacity, good cycling durability and high-rate capability. The capacity could be retained as high as 1105 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mAg(-1) for over 50 cycles, even cycled at higher current density of 1000 mA g(-1), a capacity of 800 mAh g(-1) can be obtained, whereas the electrode with the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder suffered from rapid capacity decay under the same test conditions. As a result, the NiFe2O4/rGO composites with CMC binder electrode in this work are promising as anodes for high-performance LIBs, resulting from the synergistic effect of optimal graphene content and proper choice of binder. Abstract:Ferric oxide (Fe2O3) holds huge potential as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and low cost, however, its battery performance is still limited by the intrinsic poor conductivity and huge volume variation during lithiation and de-lithiation processes. Herein, we developed a self-standing 3D interconnected vertical and lateral carbon tube (3D-CT) grid with Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in the wall of CT (denoted as 3D-CT@Fe2O3-NPs@C), as structurally-integrated anode without any inactive components. The 3D-interconnected vertical and lateral CTs with open channels not only provide plenty of attachment sites for the Fe2O3 NPs and accommodate the strain generated by the volume variation of Fe2O3, but also facilitate the fast ions and electrons transfer. Therefore, the self-supported 3D-CT@Fe2O3-NPs@C electrode delivers superior cycling and high-rate performance with a high stable specific capacity of 896.2 mAh g−1 at the current density of 1.0 A g−1 after 700 cycles. Even at the high current density of 4.0 A g−1, a reversible capacity of 488.1 mAh g−1 can be reached based on the mass of the electrode. This study provides a facile and efficient strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of LIBs through the design of structurally-integrated grid electrode.

Abstract:The intrinsically low electric conductivity and self‐aggregation of MFe2O4 during charge/discharge affect their lithium storage performance and electrocatalytic activity. To mitigate these problems, it is shown that N‐doped graphene sheets (NGS), as a highly conductive platform, finely disperse the MFe2O4 nanoparticles and rapidly shuttle electrons to and from the MFe2O4 nanoparticles. Moreover, by forming a metal@oxide core–shell nanostructure, fast electron transfer from the exterior oxide layer to NGS is achieved. Introducing NGS into MFe2O4 allows the composites to exhibit the comparable specific capacity (based on the total mass) to MFe2O4, although over 10 wt% of NGS contributes a low specific capacity of around 320–400 mAh g−1. More importantly, introducing NGS significantly increases the cycling stability performance: 97.5% (CoFe2O4/NGS) and ≈100% (NiFe2O4/NGS) of the specific capacities have been retained after 80 cycles, far higher than the capacity retentions of CoFe2O4 (35.3%) and NiFe2O4 (43.7%) tested under otherwise identical conditions. Also demonstrated are the excellent rate capabilities of the composites. For catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction, the activity is significantly improved when the MFe2O4 nanoparticles are transformed into metal@oxide core–shell nanostructure, mainly because the core–shell nanostructure exhibits lower charge transfer resistance.

Abstract:This study develops a facile and effective methodology to synthesize carbon-coated Fe3O4/graphene composite in one-pot high temperature hydrothermal processing, which not only simplifies the synthesis procedure, but also partly avoids graphene re-stacking and aggregation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Fe3O4@C nanoparticles of about 50 nm are uniformly dispersed on the graphene nanosheets. The electrochemical test of the Fe3O4@C/g-raphene nanocomposite demonstrates high rate capacity. The first reversible specific capacity is 1016.6 mAhg(-1) and increases to 1199.8 mAhg(-1) after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g(-1), and the reversible specific capacity at 20.0 A g(-1) remains 52.8% of that at 0.2 A g(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to high extrinsic conductivity where carbon layer and graphene can provide rapid transfer channels for electrons and small particles size that can accommodate volumetric changes of Fe3O4 due to their elastic feature. In addition, the winkle structure representing a curled and corrugated morphology that the graphene owns intrinsically may also act as lithium ion rapid transfer channels. Full batteries using the Fe3O4@C/graphene nanocomposite as the anode and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide as the cathode show excellent cycle performance. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of discrete, homogeneous and small (mostly 5–15 nm) Fe3O4 nanocrystals embedded in a partially graphitized porous carbon matrix was developed, which involved the simple mixing of a metal precursor (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O), a carbon precursor (C6H8O7), and a dispersant (NaCl) in an aqueous solution followed by calcination at 600 °C for 2 h under Ar. As the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Fe3O4/carbon composite with 55.24 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited superior electrochemical performances, such as high reversible lithium storage capacity (834 mA h g−1 at 1 C after 60 cycles, 1 C = 924 mA g−1), high Coulombic efficiency (100%), excellent cycling stability, and superior rate capability (588 mA h g−1 at 5 C and 382 mA h g−1 at 10 C). These excellent electrochemical performances could be attributed to the robust porous carbon matrix with a partially graphitized structure for embedding a mass of small Fe3O4 nanocrystals, which not only provided excellent electronic conductivity, short transportation length for both lithium ions and electrons, and enough elastic buffer space to accommodate volume changes upon lithium insertion/extraction, but also could effectively avoid agglomeration of the Fe3O4 nanocrystals and maintain the structural integrity of the electrode during the charge–discharge process. It is believed that the Fe3O4/carbon composite synthesized by the current method is a promising anode material for high energy and power density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A new nanocomposite system based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles confined in three-dimensional (3D) dual-mode cubic porous carbon is developed using the nanocasting and wet-impregnation methods to assess its performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. Several Fe3O4 precursor concentrations are chosen to optimize and determine the best-performing nanocomposite composition. The cubic mesoporous carbon CMK-9 offers a better ability for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be accommodated inside the mesopores, efficiently buffering the variation in volume and equally enhancing electrode/electrolyte contact for rapid charge and mass transfer. Among the prepared nanocomposites, the Fe3O4(13)@C9 anode delivers an excellent reversible discharge capacity of 1222 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at a current rate of 100 mA g−1, with a capacity retention of 96.8% compared to the fourth cycle (1262 mA h g−1). At a higher current rate of 1000 mA g−1, the nanocomposite anode offers a superior discharge capacity of 636 mA h g−1 beyond 300 cycles. The present study reveals the use of a 3D mesoporous carbon material as a scaffold for anchoring Fe3O4 nanoparticles with impressive potential as an anode for new-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Ultra-small Fe2O3 Nanoparticles Anchored on Ultrasonically Exfoliated Multilayer Graphene for LIB Anode Application

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been widely researched as substrates to anchor Fe2O3 nanoparticles. However, both of them suffer from complicated synthesis processes. Multilayer graphene (MLG), simply obtained by ultrasonic exfoliation with graphite, can reduce the cost of actual application due to the facile synthesis. However, it is still a great challenge to anchor Fe2O3 nanoparticles on MLG because of the absence of chemical active sites on its surface. Herein, a chemical deposition method is used to coat highly dispersed ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles on MLG surface. As a comparison, both GO and rGO are also used as substrates to anchor Fe2O3 by the same method. Results show that the oxygen-containing functional groups on substrates have significant effect on the crystal phase and distribution of Fe2O3. A mechanism is thus suggested for the growth of Fe2O3 on MLG, GO and rGO. Among them, the composite of Fe2O3/MLG shows the highest electrochemical performances for lithium ion battery (LIB) anodes. Specific capacity of 1050 mAh g 1 at 0.1C after 100 cycles are obtained based on the total weight of composite. Low cost, facile synthesis and high electrochemical performances enable Fe2O3/MLG to be a prospect anode material for LIBs.

Abstract:Fe3O4 is a promising anode material for high-power rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) benefiting from its high reversible capacity, rich natural resources, and easy preparation. However, the rate capability and the cyclability of the Fe3O4 electrode are still unsatisfactory limited by its poor electronic conductivity and tremendous volume variation during Li+ insertion/desertion progress. To tackle these difficulties, carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposites anchored on few-layered Ti3C2 nanosheets (Fe3O4 @C/Ti3C2) were prepared by a facile and scalable citric acid-assisted sol-gel process. As an anode material for LIBs, the Fe3O4 @C/Ti3C2 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 1285 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and a high rate capacity of 405 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1. Moreover, the Fe3O4 @C/Ti3C2 electrode presents a steady cyclability for more than 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1. The enhanced Li-ion storage performance of the Fe3O4 @C/Ti3C2 electrode could be attributed to the high electrical conductivity and the mechanical robustness of the Ti3C2 nanosheets.
