Abstract:Murray cod Maccullochella peelii (Mitchell) have a key ecological role in ensuring the health of Australia's largest inland waterway, but many aspects surrounding its reproductive strategies in the wild are unknown. From 2015 to 2019 within the Northern Murray-Darling Basin, Australia, we used a combination of bio-telemetry and underwater imagery to quantify the behaviour of Murray cod across their breeding cycle in a natural riverine environment. In most years, breeding behaviour including nest site selection was observed from early-August and spawning from late-August through to late-October, which is considerably earlier than previously reported. There was a positive correlation between the onset of breeding behaviour and week-of-year, and spawning was correlated with moon-phase. Whilst some nesting sites were amongst woody debris and in hollow logs, the majority were located in shallow water on hard substrate underneath undercuts along the riverbank edge. Nests were frequently established in isolated and disconnected pools with little or no measurable flow, suggesting that river hydraulics is not a key component driving spawning of Murray cod across at least some areas of its range. Larvae were observed actively swimming and controlling their position within and near nests and used a scatter tactic when dispersing. We also established that disturbing nesting Murray cod had a negative impact on egg and larval survival. We suggest a review of current regulations to safeguard the long-term conservation of the species across all sections of its range.
Optimising environmental watering of floodplain wetlands for fish

Abstract:Summary Flow alteration has reduced connectivity between many of the world's rivers and their floodplains, causing changes in riverine productivity and the isolation of floodplain wetlands. Environmental water is being increasingly used to help restore wetland habitats and their biota, including fish. However, some of these managed deliveries of water occur into discrete wetlands via artificial structures or at unseasonal times and may not deliver the expected gains in fish production. In the Murray River, south‐eastern Australia, we examined the relationship between attributes of watering and fish production (species‐specific recruitment, total abundance), at two time intervals: short term (6–8 weeks after watering) and at the end of the spawning season (April) for 26 discrete watering events. The study also recognised the importance of habitat in mediating fish responses to watering and examined whether fish abundance after environmental water delivery is better predicted by attributes of watering or wetland characteristics? We found that attributes of watering, including water source, its method of delivery and timing, best described fish recruitment (0+ abundance) and total fish abundance. Managers of environmental water may be able to optimise fish recruitment and abundance if they source their water from the river and deliver it during the spawning period of the target species via means that facilitate fish passage.

Abstract:Freshwater ecosystems are under extreme stress due to anthropogenic influences including changing climate, river regulation and water abstraction. Improving our understanding of the hydrological determinants of key life‐history processes of fish, as well as the spatial scales over which these processes occur, is fundamental to inform effective recovery actions. We monitored the spawning response of native fish to a drought‐breaking long‐distance flow pulse that was protected from extraction by a legal intervention order in Australia's northern Murray–Darling Basin. Sampling sites were distributed across >1600 km of the Barwon–Darling River and three of its major tributaries. Larvae of the pelagophilic golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) were captured at all sites, with the size and age distribution indicative of both mainstem and tributary spawning. A mismatch between estimated hatch dates and river discharge at some locations suggested substantial flow‐assisted dispersal from upstream spawning sites, although this was site‐specific and more prevalent at downstream locations. Early life growth rates were the highest at tributary sites compared with mainstem sites, and within mainstem sites, golden perch grew faster in upper reaches compared with lower reaches. The present study provides insight into the environmental benefit of a post‐drought protected flow event whereby connected lotic habitats promoted fish spawning and dispersal over a large spatial scale. Protection of future flow events should occur to support the conservation of golden perch and other pelagophil species, particularly following future drought periods which are forecast to become more intense and frequent.

Abstract:Fish stocking is a ubiquitous management measure in freshwater fisheries but it can induce important ecological impacts on communities and recipient ecosystems. Habitat enhancement might limit the ecological impacts of fish stocking by directly supporting biodiversity and helping to maintain ecosystem functioning. In the present, we used a mesocosm experiment to assess whether habitat enhancement, through the addition of coarse woody habitat (CWH) in the form of thin branches bundled or within an iron cage, can limit the impact of stocking of a predatory fish, juvenile largemouth bass Micropterus nigricans, on prey communities and ecosystem functioning. Results demonstrated that, prior to stocking, there was overall no significant effect of habitat enhancement on zooplankton communities and a strong effect on benthic macroinvertebrate communities that was associated with a decrease in the decomposition rate of organic matter in mesocosms containing caged-CWH. We also found that the stocking of juvenile largemouth bass significantly affected the structure of zooplankton communities while we did not observe significant effects on macroinvertebrate communities and ecosystem functioning. This effect on zooplankton community structure was compensated by habitat enhancement, notably when using caged-CWH. This study showed that habitat enhancement alone may not be sufficient to compensate the potential effects of predatory fish stocking, and that the choice of materials used to enhance habitats is fundamental in driving the efficiency.

Environmental flows stimulate estuarine plankton communities by altered salinity structure and enhanced nutrient recycling

Abstract:Sustainable management of estuaries depends on understanding the synergistic effects of nutrients and hydrological factors on estuarine food webs. We examined how phytoplankton, zooplankton and selected fish larval counts (Acanthopagrus butcheri, black bream) vary in relation to groundwater inputs and environmental flow releases (EFRs) in a small, highly flow-regulated estuary (Werribee, Victoria, Australia). We found that groundwater-derived nutrients and an EFR were associated with the community structure of phytoplankton and zooplankton and abundance of fish larvae. Elevated phytoplankton concentration was associated with increased flagellate abundance (genus Euglena), followed by increased abundance of diatoms (Cyclotella sp). The latter increase was primarily associated with groundwater-derived nitrate entering the estuary. Cyclotella sp. abundance collapsed following an EFR and the subsequent increase in ammonium (NH4 +) concentrations in the estuary. In addition, the strong halocline and increased bottom water NH4 + concentrations resulting from the EFR appeared to stimulate population growth of flagellate taxa and calanoid copepods. The abundance of calanoid copepodites and nauplii, which are the preferred food for larval A. butcheri, greatly increased due to the EFR, and was associated with an increase in larval A. butcheri abundance at this time. This effect of the EFR on the cascading trophic interactions in the estuarine food web has rarely been shown. Our study reinforces the ecological linkages between freshwater inputs, including groundwater and riverine discharge, and estuarine biotic community structure and function. Importantly, this study underscores the potential food web consequences of freshwater flow manipulation into estuaries and provides evidence for using environmental flows to enhance and/or manage the recruitment of estuarine fishes.

Abstract:AbstractDams constitute a major threat to aquatic ecosystems world-wide by modifying habitat and impairing opportunities for many freshwater fish. Subsequently, there can be a loss in fish diversity and change in the species distributions and population structure that ultimately contribute to changes in trophic structure and ecosystem function. In this study, stable isotope analysis (SIA) was used to compare trophic interaction and niche space of five fish species residing upstream and downstream of a significant barrier (Tallowa Dam) on the Shoalhaven River in south-eastern Australia. Significant reduction in niche space was found among predator/prey species residing in upstream habitat, implying limited dietary opportunity. Mixing calculations for Macquaria novemaculeata confirmed ontogenetic differences upstream and downstream of the dam. Causal mechanisms for this variability in trophic structure include habitat modification and/or discontinuity in river connectivity. SIA provides a useful tool for demonstrating the effect of barriers and/or impoundments on aquatic ecosystems, and for developing future monitoring programmes to evaluate restoration strategies.

Abstract:The shallow tidal and freshwater coastal wetlands adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef lagoon provide a vital nursery and feeding complex that supports the life cycles of marine and freshwater fish, important native vegetation and vital bird habitat. Urban and agricultural development threaten these wetlands, with many of the coastal wetlands becoming lost or changed due to the construction of artificial barriers (e.g. bunds, roads, culverts and floodgates). Infestation by weeds has become a major issue within many of the wetlands modified (bunded) for ponded pasture growth last century. A range of expensive chemical and mechanical control methods have been used in an attempt to restore some of these coastal wetlands, with limited success. This study describes an alternative approach to those methods, investigating the impact of tidal reinstatement after bund removal on weed infestation, associated changes in water quality, and fish biodiversity, in the Boolgooroo lagoon region of the Mungalla wetlands, East of Ingham in North Queensland. High resolution remote sensing, electrofishing and in-water logging was used to track changes over time- 1 year before and 4 years after removal of an earth bund. With tides only penetrating the wetland a few times yearly, gross changes towards a more natural system occurred within a relatively short timeframe, leading to a major reduction in infestation of olive hymenachne, water hyacinth and salvina, reappearance of native vegetation, improvements in water quality, and a tripling of fish diversity. Weed abundance and water quality does appear to oscillate however, dependent on summer rainfall, as changes in hydraulic pressure stops or allows tidal ingress (fresh/saline cycling). With an estimated 30% of coastal wetlands bunded in the Great Barrier Reef region, a passive remediation method such as reintroduction of tidal flow by removal of an earth bund or levee could provide a more cost effective and sustainable means of controlling freshwater weeds and improving coastal water quality into the future.

Abstract:Improved knowledge of habitat use and movements is needed to support recovery of threatened riverine fish species. The trout cod ( Maccullochella macquariensis ) is a nationally threatened fish species endemic to rivers of the southern Murray–Darling Basin (MDB), Australia. This study investigated diurnal and nocturnal habitat use and movements of trout cod in the Goulburn River, using radio-telemetry. Trout cod typically occupied small reaches (<300 m) of stream during the late spring–summer study period. Larger-scale movements (mostly home-range shifts) and movements onto inundated riparian habitats also occurred during a period of high discharge. Trout cod occupied deeper water further from the bank during the day and shallower water closer to the bank during the night and used areas with slower velocities more than was their availability, particularly during the earlier hours of the day. They also made extensive use of in-stream cover (i.e. wood). Our information on diel habitat use provides a platform to guide informed management (e.g. availability of preferred habitats under different river-discharge scenarios) to improve trout cod population sustainability.

Abstract:Summary 1. A common goal of many environmental flow regimes is to maintain and/or enhance the river’s native fish community by increasing the occurrence of successful spawning and recruitment events. However, our understanding of the flow requirements of the early life history of fish is often limited, and hence predicting their response to specific managed flow events is difficult. To overcome this uncertainty requires the use of adaptive management principles in the design, implementation, monitoring and adjustment of environmental flow regimes. 2. The Barmah‐Millewa Forest, a large river red gum forest on the Murray River floodplain, south‐east Australia, contains a wide variety of ephemeral and permanent aquatic habitats suitable for fish. Flow regulation of the Murray River has significantly altered the natural flood regime of the Forest. In an attempt to alleviate some of the effects of river regulation, the Forest’s water regime is highly managed using a variety of flow control structures and also receives targeted Environmental Water Allocations (EWA). In 2005, the largest environmental flow allocated to date in Australia was delivered at the Forest. 3. This study describes the adaptive management approach employed during the delivery of the 2005 EWA, which successfully achieved multiple ecological goals including enhanced native fish spawning and recruitment. Intensive monitoring of fish spawning and recruitment provided invaluable real‐time and ongoing management input for optimising the delivery of environmental water to maximise ecological benefits at Barmah‐Millewa Forest and other similar wetlands in the Murray‐Darling Basin. 4. We discuss possible scenarios for the future application of environmental water and the need for environmental flow events and regimes to be conducted as rigorous, large‐scale experiments within an adaptive management framework.

Response of benthic macroinvertebrates to dam removal in the restoration of the Boardman River, Michigan, USA

Abstract:Dam removal is an increasingly important method of stream restoration, but most removal efforts are under-studied in their effects. In order to better understand the effects of such removals on the stream ecosystem, we examined changes in stream macroinvertebrate communities from 2011–2016. Comparisons were focused above, below, and before and after the October 2012 removal of the Brown Bridge Dam on the Boardman River in Michigan (USA), as well as to new channel sites created in its former reservoir (2013–2015). Using linear mixed-effect models on the percent abundance of ecologically sensitive taxa (% Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera (EPT)), total density of all macroinvertebrates, overall taxa richness, and Functional Feeding Groups, along with multivariate analyses on the community matrix, we examined differences in community composition among sites and years. EPT declined downstream of the dam immediately after dam removal, but recovered in the second year, becoming dominant within 2–4 years. Downstream sites before removal had different community composition than upstream sites and downstream sites after removal (p<0.001), while upstream and downstream sites after removal converged towards similarity. New channel (restored) %EPT, density, and taxa richness were not different from upstream sites in any year following removal, but new channel sites were the most distinct in community composition, possessing multiple indicator taxa characteristic of unique new conditions. The invasive New Zealand mud snail ( Potamopyrgus antipodarum ) was absent from all sites prior to dam removal, but appeared at low densities in upstream sites in 2013, had spread to all sites by 2015, and showed large increases at all sites by 2016. Managers employing dam removal for stream restoration should include post-removal monitoring for multiple years following removal and conduct risk analysis regarding potential effects on colonization of invasive invertebrate species.

Abstract:Augmenting depleted genetic diversity can improve the fitness and evolutionary potential of wildlife populations, but developing effective management approaches requires genetically monitored test cases. One such case is the small, isolated and inbred Cotter River population of an endangered Australian freshwater fish, the Macquarie perch Macquaria australasica, which over 3 years (2017–2019) received 71 translocated migrants from a closely related, genetically more diverse population. We used genetic monitoring to test whether immigrants bred, interbred with local fish and augmented population genetic diversity. We also investigated whether levels of river flow affected recruitment, inbreeding depression and juvenile dispersal. Fish length was used to estimate the age, birth year cohort and growth of 524 individuals born between 2016 and 2020 under variable flow conditions. DArT genome‐wide genotypes were used to assess individual ancestry, heterozygosity, short‐term effective population size and identify parent‐offspring and full‐sibling families. Of 442 individuals born after translocations commenced, only two (0.45%) were of mixed ancestry; these were half‐sibs with one translocated parent in common. Numbers of breeders and genetic diversity for five birth year cohorts of the Cotter River fish were low, especially in low‐flow years. Additionally, individuals born in the year of lowest flow evidently suffered from inbreeding depression for juvenile growth. The year of highest flow was associated with the largest number of breeders, lowest inbreeding in the offspring and greatest juvenile dispersal distances. Genetic diversity decreased in the upstream direction, flagging restricted access of breeders to the most upstream breeding sites, exacerbated by low river flow. Our results suggest that the effectiveness of translocations could be increased by focussing on upstream sites and moving more individuals per year; using riverine sources should be considered. Our results indicate that river flow sufficient to facilitate fish movement through the system would increase the number of breeders, promote individuals' growth, reduce inbreeding depression and promote genetic rescue.

Abstract:Entrainment and removal of fish from aquatic ecosystems can occur at water pump offtakes. Exclusion screens that reduce these impacts are recognised as an important conservation measure. Evaluate the effectiveness of the Australian screen design guidelines in protecting larvae and young-of-year age class of a native fish species, Murray cod Maccullochella peelii . Entrainment and impingement of postflexion larvae and young-of-year were assessed in a controlled laboratory environment. Tests were conducted under a range of approach velocities (AV) and impingement durations for two screen materials. Fish screens reduced larval entrainment by ≤84%. Screens had no significant effect on reducing larval entrainment at AV ≥0.125 m s −1 . Impingement of young-of-year was positively associated with AV and mortality increased with impingement duration, irrespective of screen type. To protect early life-stage Murray cod, it is recommended that water pump offtakes be fitted with 2-mm vertical wedge-wire stainless steel screens and AV be limited to ≤0.1 m s −1 . This study represents the first assessment of the effectiveness of the Australian screen design guidelines in protecting larvae, providing knowledge to further refine specifications for screen design and support the recovery of native fish populations.

Abstract:Predation during the downstream dispersal of larval stages represents a major recruitment bottleneck for fish populations. The co-occurrence of other organisms in river drift may reduce predation, but our knowledge of the factors influencing the composition and abundance of drift communities during post-hatch dispersal of larval fish remain limited. A multi-year (2011–2018) study was conducted to investigate abiotic factors influencing drift communities during larval lake sturgeon ( Acipenser fulvescens ) dispersal in the Upper Black River (Cheboygan, MI, USA). Cumulative water temperature was a strong predictor of drift for larval lake sturgeon, suckers (Catostomidae) and macroinvertebrates, with reduced macroinvertebrate drift during lunar phases with higher lunar illumination. Nights with a new moon had on average, three times the drifting macroinvertebrate biomass as nights during a full moon, with Heptageniidae and Isonychiidae displaying higher abundances during lower light conditions. Favorable conditions for other taxa to reduce larval lake sturgeon predation through predator swamping were common, though variability in timing (overlap between drifting taxa), biomass, and abundances likely alters the strength of such effects among years. A better understanding of the conditions influencing drifting communities during larval fish dispersal may assist in predicting larval mortality and year-class strength for managed fish populations.

Abstract:Damming and regulating the flow of rivers is a widespread issue and can have a significant impact on resident biota. The Tongariro River, central North Island, New Zealand, has a flow regime that is regulated by two hydroelectric dams along its length, and it has been suggested that ‘flushing flows’ would assist benthic communities by removing ‘nuisance’ periphyton growth forms that typically occur in autumn. We assessed whether (i) damming has altered periphyton and macroinvertebrate communities downstream of the Rangipo Dam and (ii) whether the release of a flow pulse equivalent to 50 times the baseflow is sufficient to (a) move the substrate in the section of river downstream of this dam and (b) impact benthic periphyton and macroinvertebrate communities. Downstream macroinvertebrate communities were impacted by the presence of the dam, but periphyton was not. No movement of substrate occurred downstream of the dam as a result of the flow release, which was likely because of naturally high embeddedness and armouring of substrate. Periphyton biomass and macroinvertebrate density were not affected by the release indicating that larger releases would be required to have any effect on benthic communities downstream of this dam. This study highlights the importance of considering natural bed structure and sediment dynamics when using flow releases downstream of dams to control periphyton. Abstract:Water resources for irrigation in the Murray–Darling Basin have been heavily over-allocated, with major detrimental effects on wetlands and rivers. The Murray–Darling Basin Plan is intended to return water from irrigated agriculture to the environment but requires comprehensive, accurate water accounting to achieve this objective. Floodplain harvesting – the diversion and storage of overland flows into on-farm dams – is widely practised by irrigators in the northern Basin. By reducing volumes of river flows, floodplain harvesting has negative effects on downstream water users and the environment. The volume of diversions is not known, creating a major source of uncertainty over water availability and use. We focussed on floodplain harvesting in northern New South Wales (NSW) catchments (Border Rivers, Gwydir, Namoi, Macquarie and Barwon-Darling) because the NSW government is attempting to licence and regulate the practice. We found in 2019–20 there were 1,833 storages in these catchments with a total surface area of 42,650 ha. Storage capacity has risen from 557 GL in 1993–94 to 1,067 in 1999–2000, 1,225 in 2008–09 to 1,393 GL in 2019–20, a 2.5-fold increase in 26 years. We estimated mean annual floodplain harvesting take (2004–2020) in northern NSW was 778 GL (range 632–926 GL). For context, this volume represents half of the mean volume of held environmental water released annually for the entire Basin between 2009–10 and 2018–19 (1,576 GL) and six times that for the northern NSW Basin (125 GL). The volume of take from floodplain harvesting is not sustainable and in breach of legislation on water use and management. We discuss the negative impacts of floodplain harvesting on downstream communities and flow-dependent ecosystems and their social justice implications.
Why do fish strand? An analysis of ten years of flow reduction monitoring data from the Columbia and Kootenay rivers, Canada

Abstract:Stranding of fish due to flow reductions has been documented in the near shore of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, Canada, and can result in sub‐lethal or lethal effects on fish. Ten years (1999–2009) of monitoring data have been collected at sites below two hydro‐electric dams (Hugh‐L‐Keenleyside and Brilliant Dam) following flow reductions. A generalized linear mixed effects model analysed the probability of a stranding event in relation to environmental and operational variables including the rate of change in the water levels, the duration of shoreline inundation prior to a reduction (wetted history), the river stage, the magnitude of the reduction, distance downstream from the dam, time of day, day of year (season) and whether a site had been physically altered to mitigate stranding. The results demonstrated statistically significant effects on stranding risk from minimum river stage, day of the year and whether a site had been physically re‐contoured. The combination of investigated factors giving the highest probability of stranding was a large magnitude reduction completed in the afternoon in midsummer, at low water levels when the near shore had been inundated for a long period. This research is significant in its approach to assessing years of ecosystem scale monitoring data and using the modelling results to determine ways for these findings to be applied in regulated river management to minimize fish stranding. It also highlighted data gaps that require addressing and provides ecosystem scale results to compare with stranding studies carried out in mesocosms. © 2014 The Authors. Abstract:Catastrophic fish death events are increasing in frequency and severity globally. A series of major recent fish deaths in the semi-arid lower Darling-Baaka river system (LDBR) of Australia are emblematic of these issues with tens of millions of native fish perishing. In 2018–2019 there was a major death event for Australia's largest freshwater fish, Murray cod ( Maccullochella peelii ). To aid the recovery and guide restoration activities of local Murray cod populations, it is essential to gather information on the mating strategies and effective population size following the fish death event. After the fish deaths, we collected larvae during the 2020 and 2021 breeding seasons and used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to provide insight mating strategies and to estimate effective population size. Larvae were detected in both years along the entire length of the LDBR. Sixteen percent of the inferred breeding individuals were found to contribute to multiple pairings, confirming a complex and polygamous mating system. A high frequency of polygamy was evident both within and between years with 100 % polygamy identified among parents that produced offspring in both 2020 and 2021 and 95 % polygamy identified among parents involved in multiple spawning events within years. Post-larval Murray cod samples collected between 2016 and 2021 were co-analysed to further inform kinship patterns. Again, monogamy was rare with no confirmed cases of the same male-female pair contributing to multiple breeding events within or between seasons. Effective population size based on Murray cod collected after the fish death event was estimated at 721.6 (CI 471–1486), though this has likely declined following a subsequent catastrophic fish death event in the LDBR in March 2023. Our data provide insight into the variability of Murray cod mating strategies, and we anticipate that this knowledge will assist in planning conservation actions to ultimately help recover a species in crisis.

Abstract:Dam control has changed rivers' hydraulic environment and hydrological rhythm; to explore the causes of fish habitat loss and influence of river regulation in such rivers, the downstream curving reaches of Shaying River were cut off. Grass, silver, and bighead carp were selected as the research targets, the impact of waterway regulation and gravel groups effect in target fish habitat were studied using numerical simulation. The results show that the original channel's hydraulic environment is similar to the artificial channel, and the target fish spawning habitat is limited, which is an important reason for the shortage of fish resources in research area. The reconstructed channel can meet the river's navigation demands and improve the channel's flood discharge capacity. The habitat method was used to estimate the minimum and appropriate ecological flows of the target fish at each growth stages in the original and reconstruction rivers. Under the appropriate ecological flow, the weighted usable area (WAU) of juvenile, migratory, and spawning habitats of target fish in the reconstructed river increased by 168, 24, and 580%, respectively, compared to the original channel, while the WAU of adult fish that preferred slow-water environment decreased by 62%, effectively improving the target fish's spawning environment.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Ahead of Print. Ecological traps can be caused when partial restoration leads organisms to make maladaptive habitat choices. One example of this is fishways (e.g., fish ladders) that provide upstream passage at dams but are not paired with adequate downstream passage. We tested the hypothesis that attracting anadromous fishes to spawn above a dam, but blocking downstream passage of their offspring leads to an ecological trap. Using passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, we monitored the movements of steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at a dam and fishway on the central California coast. We found that downstream passage for juveniles and kelts was limited by four factors: migration delay, loss in the reservoir, avoidance of the downstream bypass, and water depths on the spillway. Based on the spillway-passage depth thresholds, we estimated that the ability for fish to pass downstream was limited to only half of the migration season in 55% of the past 20 years (2002–2021). Our results support the ecological trap hypothesis, which may explain why restoration using fishways has failed to produce recovery gains in this population and elsewhere.

Restoring Murray River floodplain wetlands: Does the sediment record inform on watering regime?

Abstract:<p>The floodplain wetlands of the southern Murray Darling Basin (MDB) have been subject to the impacts of catchment and water resource development for more than a century. Their current degraded state is attributed to the regulation of the rivers and abstraction of water volume for irrigation. The MDB Plan is to return at least 2,750 Gl of mean annual flow to the system to restore the condition of waterways. Considerable recent investment in infrastructure enables water to be released into the basin's floodplain wetlands. The proposed watering regime is underpinned by modelling that suggests that, before regulation, overbank flows would have occurred regularly as discharge peaked in winter and spring. Sediment cores have been extracted from over 50 floodplain wetlands of the southern Murray Basin. Those from several, large meander wavelength billabongs extend for 1,000–5,000 years suggesting that these sites were permanently inundated over that time. Others extend to ~200 years and are presumed not to have accumulated sediment until more recently. The records of most wetlands, however, only extend to the onset of river regulation in the 1920s, suggesting that before then they were not inundated for sufficient duration for net accumulation to occur. Preserved diatoms suggest that the shallow, plant‐dominated wetlands of the past have transitioned to deep, turbid water systems today. As rivers are identified as a source of sediment to wetlands, less regular inundation, rather than more, is a viable option in restoring the ecological function of these floodplain wetlands and in slowing sediment infill.</p>
