Abstract:Purpose – The growing public anxiety towards the end of the twentieth century that men were “in crisis” was articulated in popular-cultural texts. The purpose of this paper is to examine the TV family sitcom Modern Family, in order to explore the ways that it constructs the masculine post-9/11. Design/methodology/approach – The approach used is that of cultural studies, a field which draws together theorisation and analytical methods from a variety of disciplines. Findings – Despite the variety of family structures represented in the series Modern Family, its narratives continue to foster traditional notions of patriarchal power. However, the presence of alternate versions of “family” and “masculinity” suggests an awareness of other possibilities. Practical implications – This paper may model to its readers a way of approaching and analysing other popular-cultural texts for their representations of masculinity. Abstract:La diversidad temática de los productos audiovisuales permite a los usuarios acceder a contenidos cada vez más específicos. La presencia de plataformas digitales en Internet hace posible el consumo de series que trasladan al espectador a mundos verosímiles y cotidianos a través del humor. Este trabajo pretende analizar la representación que la sitcom americana Modern family realiza de la figura de la mujer en sus diferentes facetas. La hipótesis que se plantea en esta investigación es que la sitcom americana actual ofrece una visión estereotipada y tradicional de la figura femenina. Con el objetivo de demostrar este planteamiento, se ha realizado un Análisis del Discurso Multimodal con enfoque Socio-semiótico. De esta manera, se comprende desde la trasmisión discursiva el trasfondo cultural que tiene la serie y la visión que se traslada a los espectadores sobre el papel femenino.Los resultados evidencian que, a pesar de que la sitcom ha incorporado elementos de la realidad para definir la figura femenina, existe una tendencia a caracterizar mediante estereotipos de género. De esta forma, el personaje femenino se encuentra ligado al ámbito familiar, romántico y doméstico, algo distante a lo que se percibe en el ambiente cultural actual.

Abstract:Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Darstellung von Familienverhaltnissen sowie damit zusammenhangende Gender-Rollen in der US-Mockumentary „Modern Family“. Der deutliche Unterschied dieser Serie zu anderen Familienserien liegt nicht nur in dem ungewohnlichen Mockumentary-Stil, sondern auch daran, dass neben der traditionellen Kernfamilie auch zwei postmodern gepragte Familienformen zum Vorschein kommen. Neben der chaotischen traditionellen Kernfamilie sind zwei auf Interkulturalitat basierende Sonderformen zu finden. Einerseits eine Patchworkfamilie bestehend aus einem Amerikaner, seiner deutlich jungeren kolumbianischen Frau und deren Sohn und in weiterer Folge ihr gemeinsames Kind, anderseits eine homosexuelles (Ehe-)Paar, welches aufgrund der transnationalen Adoption eines vietnamesischen Waisenmadchens zu einer Familie erweitert wird. Die Sitcom „Modern Family“ zeigt auf humoristischer Weise welche Tucken, aber auch welche Bereicherung diese Formen des Zusammenlebens haben. Die Unterschiede, aber auch Gemeinsamkeiten der traditionellen Kernfamilie mit den zwei postmodernen Familien werden untersucht und analysiert. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die elterliche Rollenverteilung hinsichtlich Haushaltes, Einkommen, Partnerschaft und Erziehung. Hierbei wird der Einfluss der gelebten Art von Mannlichkeit und Weiblichkeit auf die familiare Rolle miteinbezogen.

Non-verbal language as a constructive element of female stereotypes in the situation comedy Modern Family

Abstract:Resumen This research sought to study the stereotyping projected by female protagonists in the North American sitcom Modern Family through their non-verbal communication. This television series was selected both for its content and its temporal and topical criteria. The empirical section of this paper was performed by way of content analysis and carried out through identification of the main non-verbal behavioural patterns of the selected characters and their subsequent relationships with the different female stereotypes represented in the sitcom. As a consequence, the conclusion highlights that, despite being a series depicting an atypical American family showing different ways of everyday life management, it still portrays a highly stereotyped and clichéd image, especially with regard to female characters. Este trabajo de investigación se articula en el estudio de la estereotipación que proyectan los personajes protagonistas femeninos en la sitcom norteamericana Modern Family a través de su comunicación no verbal. La elección de esta serie de televisión responde tanto a criterios de contenido como temporales y de actualidad. La parte práctica de este artículo se ha desarrollado mediante la técnica del análisis de contenido y se ha llevado a cabo a través de la identificación de los principales patrones no verbales de los personajes seleccionados y su posterior puesta en relación con los distintos estereotipos femeninos presentes en la comedia de situación. De esta forma, se ha podido establecer como principal conclusión que, a pesar de tratarse de una serie que muestra una familia americana atípica en la que tienen cabida maneras muy diferentes de afrontar la vida cotidiana, sigue transmitiendo una imagen altamente estereotipada y plagada de tópicos especialmente en lo que respecta a sus personajes femeninos.

Abstract:This essay reviews eight seasons of the television series Modern Family, with a close examination of the scripted dialogue used in the first season, when Colombian actor Sofía Vergara crafts the sitcom’s popular character of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. Specifically, we pay overdue attention to the use of Gloria’s accent and her grammatically incorrect English as a technique to racialize her as a Latina character. A textual analysis of the show’s first season (2009–10), consisting of twenty-four episodes, found ten episodes that featured scenes in which Gloria’s Spanish-accented English or her use of English words was mocked on the show. Gloria’s interaction with the show’s white characters often used her accent or word choice for comedic effect and for structuring racial and gendered hierarchies. Ultimately, Sofía Vergara’s personification of Gloria provides an interstitial space in which the character’s visual aesthetics (color, hair, curves) and language (accent, speech) function as signifiers of Latinidad and in this way racialize both her visual and vocal body.

Abstract:At first, this article introduced the related concepts of gender stereotypes and the theoretical base of the researches on the gender stereotypes in television advertisements. The article reviewed the researches on the gender stereotypes in television advertisements from the points of view of the content analysis and audience’s response. The results of content analysis showed that despite the feminist movement for more than 20 years, the gender stereotypes in television advertisements had not been reduced yet and it was universal around the world. The results of audience’s response showed that audience’s response to the gender stereotypes in television advertisements was a complex process and was influenced by many factors, such as sex, age, level of education,feminist consciousness and so on.

Abstract:The extant research focused on gender understood as a single item to explain wishful identification and parasocial relationships with TV characters. This study focused on gendered personality traits and how they contribute to wishful identification, parasocial relationships with (non-)stereotypical male and female characters of the TV series Modern Family, and the series enjoyment in general. Participants (N = 508) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions with questions about either stereotypical male or female or non-stereotypical male or female characters. Respondents also answered questions about their own gender traits (positive/negative feminine/masculine), wishful identification, parasocial friendship and love for the assigned character, and enjoyment of the series. Different gendered personality traits were associated with wishful identification, parasocial friendship, and love with different types of characters, as well as series enjoyment. Thus, we conclude that media characters should exhibit both stereotypical and non-stereotypical traits to reach a broad and diverse audience.

Exploring Gender Roles and Stereotypes in Literature: An Analysis of Contemporary Works

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to explore the representation of gender roles and stereotypes in contemporary literature. The analysis was conducted using secondary data from a variety of literary works published in the past decade. The study aimed to investigate how gender dynamics are portrayed and whether traditional gender roles and stereotypes are reinforced or challenged. Methodology: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to select appropriate works for analysis. A total of 30 novels and short stories were selected across different genres, including fiction, drama, and science fiction. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns related to gender roles and stereotypes. Findings: The findings of the study revealed a complex depiction of gender roles in contemporary literature. While some works challenged traditional gender norms and portrayed more fluid, non-stereotypical characters, others reinforced traditional gender roles and stereotypes. Additionally, the study found that the portrayal of gender roles varied across genres, with science fiction and fantasy literature often presenting more progressive and diverse gender representations. The study also identified several common stereotypes associated with gender, such as the nurturing and caring nature of women and the dominance and aggressiveness of men. However, it is important to note that these stereotypes were not universally present, and many works depicted characters who deviated from these norms. Overall, this study contributes to our understanding of how gender roles and stereotypes are represented in contemporary literature. It reveals the complexity and diversity of gender dynamics portrayed in literary works, highlighting both the presence of traditional gender roles and stereotypes and the emergence of more fluid and non-stereotypical characters. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The findings suggest that literature has the potential to challenge and redefine gender norms and that the portrayal of gender roles varies across genres. This study provides insights for scholars, educators, and readers interested in understanding and discussing gender representation in literature and encourages further exploration of gender dynamics in contemporary literary works.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the American drama "Modern Family" by using Stuart Hall's "encoding/decoding" theory. Modern Family uses universal themes and a "modern" plot to attract Chinese viewers, and uses diverse characters to bring a sense of psychology and identity to decoders. The American values embodied in the show mainly focus on values related to diversity and confident low-context culture. The decoders mainly show a hegemonic position on episodes such as the way of education between parents and children, a negotiated position on episodes that go against traditional concepts, and an antagonistic position on the ideological, political, and economic levels of the episodes.

Abstract:Conflict talk, also known as controversial discourse, is a kind of confrontational communicative behavior arising from differences between two or more parties in views, interests and desires. This study regards conflict talk as a kind of compound speech act. Based on the observation and interpretation of the linguistic data, this study mainly collects the conflict talks between couples in the American sitcom Modern Family and adopts both qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyze the pragmatic characteristics and pragmatic functions of the conflict talks between American couples from the perspective of locutionary act, illocutionary act, perlocutionary effect on the theoretical basis of the speech act theory. The research verifies the feasibility of speech act theory in analyzing conflict talks between couples in Modern Family. It helps us to understand conflict talks between couples from the point of pragmatics better.

Abstract:With the exchange of world cultures, cultural industries between different countries have begun to spread widely. Foreigners discuss Chinese costume dramas enthusiastically, and Chinese people also like to watch foreign sitcoms. As the number of people watching American TV dramas is increasing year by year, how to do subtitle translation well has become the focus of translation scholars. Based on the theory of domestication and foreignization put forward by the famous American translation theorist Lawrence Venuti, this paper analyzes the subtitle translation in the classic American TV series Modern Family, and discusses how to promote the best communication between different cultures in subtitle translation.
Analysis of Stereotypes in Multicultural Families in Korean Comedy Programs: Focusing on ‘Human Theater of the Foreign Daughter-in-Law Nitong’

Abstract:This study analyzes the stereotypes of multicultural families presented in the Korean comedy program ‘Foreign Daughter-in-Law Nitong’s Human Theater’. To achieve this, six episodes were transcribed, and the interactions and behaviors of the characters were examined to collect and categorize the stereotypes. The analysis revealed that the frequency of speech by the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law Nitong was the highest, reflecting the authoritative position of the mother-in-law and the subordinate role of Nitong. In contrast, the husband's speech frequency was relatively low, indicating his role as a mediator in conflict situations and his lack of direct involvement in household affairs. The analysis of stereotype types identified those related to household labor, family roles, cultural elements, language issues, and appearance and age. Household labor stereotypes were reproduced through the mother-in-law's instructions and Nitong's compliance, emphasizing traditional patriarchal roles, the mother-in-law's authority, and the daughter-in-law's subordinate role. Additionally, cultural elements such as food culture, lifestyle differences, and language issues were found to be sources of conflict, with misunderstandings, conflicts, and pronunciation issues being major factors. Stereotypes related to appearance and age, including evaluations and derogations, were also present. This study elucidates how media forms and reinforces stereotypes about multicultural families, providing valuable insights into the discrimination and inequality faced by multicultural family members in society. It underscores the importance of multicultural education and media literacy, suggesting the need for viewers to critically engage with media. Ultimately, the study contributes to enhancing social inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural backgrounds.
Feeling devalued : the creative industries, motherhood, gender and class inequality

Abstract:There is a growing body of data that illustrates how work in the creative media industries is marked by bleak inequalities. Critical sociological accounts of the industry have explored the barriers to employment opportunities for workers from different ethnic, disabled, gendered and more recently socially classed backgrounds resulting in the awareness that the majority of those who control the means of production for creative and cultural commodities are male, white and middle class. With regards to women, the problem of gender inequality has commonly been linked to women’s childbearing capabilities citing the demands of childcare as a key reason for women’s withdrawal from and under-representation within the industry. Linking gender inequality in the creative workforce to motherhood creates a smokescreen, a framework which allows for concepts of ‘choice’ and ‘preference’ to mask deeply complicated processes of oppression and exclusion. Motherhood also places the issue of gender inequality into a singular axis, failing therefore to consider the multiple axes of exclusion that operate within the workforce. This thesis takes this issue of motherhood, gender inequality and work in the creative industries as its focus point to explore how motherhood has become synonymous with female withdrawal from the industry. It responds to literature on modes and practices of work in modern society drawing from those who have equated work in the creative sector as emblematic of a “brave new world of work” (Beck 2002 in Deuze 2007, p.21) and exposed a paradox between celebratory concepts of creative practice and the lived realities of the creative workforce. My own contribution has been drawn from a series of in-depth interviews with mothers who either work or have left work in the creative sector following the birth of a child/children. The research findings emerged inductively, following a grounded theoretical approach but one that was informed by a feminist epistemological framework to knowledge production. Thinking about motherhood as a fluid and constructed concept enables an exploration into the relationship between motherhood, gender and class-based inequalities and how they operate within the industry.

Abstract:As a common platform for stigmatized outsiders, subversive comedy holds special interest for Jewish cultural studies, feminist media studies, and critical race studies alike. However, these fields have just begun to analyze millennial Jewish women's transgressive TV comedy, a subgenre taking America by storm in series like Girls, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Broad City. Further, feminist and critical race work on these series sometimes overlooks Jewish difference, reflecting a wider tendency in both fields to conflate Jews with white gentiles. To advance scholarship on race, gender, Jewishness, and millennial TV comedy, I analyze the CW's musical romantic comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015–2019). I argue that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend originates a new paradigm of the "Jewy/screwy Leading Lady" and uses this figure to disrupt rom-com gender scripts from within, especially the rom-com myth that women can find wholeness through straight romance. My analysis invites Jewish studies to better grasp millennial Jewish American women's experience and artistic production. I likewise expand feminist theories on race in comedy to better analyze Jewishness in romantic comedies and millennial "precarious-girl comedies." More broadly, I invite these fields to converse with Jewish studies in order to address Jewishness as a salient ongoing difference in the twenty-first-century United States.

Abstract:The popular television show Modern Family follows sitcom conventions and attempts to send a moral message about how relatives can live well together. An examination of the specific content of this message shows that it prioritizes self-giving love for the sake of forgiveness and reconciliation. This creates a recognizable parallel with the Christian conception of agape, and a discussion of this notion in the work of Karl Rahner in conjunction with his idea of the “anonymous Christian” allows for the identification of Modern Family’s moral vision as an anonymous theology of family ripe with theological significance and pedagogical potential.

Abstract:Desperate Housewives, an American sitcom aired in 2004, takes American housewives as the theme, sets in the middle-class area of Wisteria Lane, and tracks the lives of four housewives with different personalities, Susan, Lynette, Bree and Gabrielle, following the plight they face: all kinds of pressures in life, and the contradiction between the shackles of tradition and the demands for independence and freedom of modern women, which make these housewives almost desperate. In this paper, the reasons for the female plight in the context of the times will be analyzed, and feminism in Desperate Housewives will be explored based on intersectionality theory, feminist media study theory, and post-feminism. Finally, the female plight hidden in the opening animation will be analyzed through multimodal theory.

Abstract:With the frequent cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, film and television series, not only gradually replace the mainstream position of traditional print media, but also play a very important role in cross-cultural communication. It is difficult to convey the same comic effect in different cultural backgrounds. Guided by Skopos theory, this paper takes the subtitle translation of Modern Family as an example to analyze the translation of some humorous lines in this sitcom. It aims to achieve the effect of integration, hoping to put forward more opinions on the subtitle translation of more excellent overseas comedy works in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents a case study of the Dunphys’ in the American TV series Modern Family to examine the discourse between parents and children from the perspective of Satir’s Iceberg Theory and to investigate the influence of discourse on parent-child relationships. The study argues that parents should cultivate the ability to position themselves within the “relationship” rather than the “change.” In addition, the study emphasizes the importance of children’s capacity to think from others’ perspectives and avoid imposing their own perceived correct views on others.
