Abstract:We investigate the relationship between communication and search efficiency in a biological context by proposing a model of Brownian searchers with long-range pairwise interaction. After a general study of the properties of the model, we show an application to the particular case of acoustic communication among Mongolian gazelle, for which data are available, searching for good habitat areas. Using Monte Carlo simulations and density equations, our results point out that the search is optimal (i.e. the mean first hitting time among searchers is minimum) at intermediate scales of communication, showing that both an excess and a lack of information may worsen it.

Optimal Lévy-Flight Foraging with a Finite Flight Distance

Abstract:This paper mainly concerns the problem of optimizing random search procedures with an assumption that each flight distance is within a finite interval. We study influences of different Lévy distribution parameters of the flight distance on the searching efficiency, for both non-destructive and destructive cases. It is found that the mean free path shows a significant influence on the optimal distribution for the non-destructive case, where the optimal exponent of the Lévy distribution varies for different mean free paths. While for the destructive case, the highest searching efficiency can be derived as the exponent tends to 1 for all cases. Moreover, for a fixed exponent, the highest searching efficiency can be achieved when the upper bound of the flight distance tends to the lower bound, which results in a probability density function of an impulsive form. Finally, we treat the flight time during two successive flights as waiting time and present master equations of the forager’s movements both for time-space independent and dependent cases.

Abstract:Optimal random foraging strategy has gained increasing concentrations. It is shown that L\'evy flight is more efficient compared with the Brownian motion when the targets are sparse. However, standard L\'evy flight generally cannot be followed in practice. In this paper, we assume that each flight of the forager is possibly interrupted by some uncertain factors, such as obstacles on the flight direction, natural enemies in the vision distance, and restrictions in the energy storage for each flight, and introduce the tempered L\'evy distribution $p(l)\sim {\rm e}^{-\rho l}l^{-\mu}$. It is validated by both theoretical analyses and simulation results that a higher searching efficiency can be derived when a smaller $\rho$ or $\mu$ is chosen. Moreover, by taking the flight time as the waiting time, the master equation of the random searching procedure can be obtained. Interestingly, we build two different types of master equations: one is the standard diffusion equation and the other one is the tempered fractional diffusion equation.
Emergence of Lévy walks from second order stochastic optimization

Abstract:In natural foraging, many organisms seem to perform two different types of motile search: directed search (taxis) and random search. The former is observed when the environment provides cues to guide motion towards a target. The latter involves no apparent memory or information processing and can be mathematically modeled by random walks. We show that both types of search can be generated by a common mechanism in which Lévy flights or Lévy walks emerge from a second-order gradient-based search with noisy observations. No explicit switching mechanism is required -- instead, continuous transitions between the directed and random motions emerge depending on the Hessian matrix of the cost function. For a wide range of scenarios the Lévy tail index is $\alpha=1$, consistent with previous observations in foraging organisms. These results suggest that adopting a second-order optimization method can be a useful strategy to combine efficient features of directed and random search.

Abstract:Animals foraging alone are hypothesized to optimize the encounter rates with resources through Lévy walks. However, the issue of how the interactions between multiple foragers influence their search efficiency is still not completely understood. To address this, we consider a model to study the optimal strategy for a group of foragers searching for targets distributed heterogeneously. In our model, foragers move on a square lattice containing immobile but regenerative targets. At any instant, a forager is able to detect only those targets that happen to be in the same site. However, we allow the foragers to have information about the state of other foragers. A forager who has not detected any target walks towards the nearest location, where another forager has detected a target, with a probability exp(− αd ), where d is the distance between the foragers and α is a parameter characterizing the propensity of the foragers to aggregate. The model reveals that neither overcrowding ( α → 0) nor independent searching ( α → ∞) is beneficial for the foragers. For a patchy distribution of targets, the efficiency is maximum for intermediate values of α . In addition, in the limit α → 0, the length of the walks can become scale-free.

Abstract:To describe the effects of spatial dispersal strategies and heterogeneous environments on the dynamics of species, we study a logistic model with non-local dispersals for single species. The aim of this paper is to study the optimization of species survival and the investigations are carried out from two aspects: optimization of survival chances and maximization of total population of species. W.l.o.g., assume that the spatial distribution of resources m∈L∞(Ω) satisfies −1≤m(x)≤1and1|Ω|∫Ωm(x)dx≤α,α∈(−1,1). Our main results indicate that m=χE−χΩ∖E, where E⊂Ω is measurable with |E|/|Ω|=(1+α)/2 and χE is the characteristic function of E, is optimal for both the survival chances and total population of species respectively.

Abstract:In many random search processes of interest in chemistry, biology or during rescue operations, an entity must find a specific target site before the latter becomes inactive, no longer available for reaction or lost. We present exact results on a minimal model system, a one-dimensional searcher performing a discrete time random walk or Lévy flight. In contrast with the case of a permanent target, the capture probability and the conditional mean first passage time can be optimized. The optimal Lévy index takes a non-trivial value, even in the long lifetime limit, and exhibits an abrupt transition as the initial distance to the target is varied. Depending on the target lifetime, this transition is discontinuous or continuous, separated by a non-conventional tricritical point. These results pave the way to the optimization of search processes under time constraints.

Abstract:Motile organisms often use finite spatial perception of their surroundings to navigate and search their habitats. Yet standard models of search are usually based on purely local sensory information. To model how a finite perceptual horizon affects ecological search, we propose a framework for optimal navigation that combines concepts from random walks and optimal control theory. We show that, while local strategies are optimal on asymptotically long and short search times, finite perception yields faster convergence and increased search efficiency over transient time scales relevant in biological systems. The benefit of the finite horizon can be maintained by the searchers tuning their response sensitivity to the length scale of the stimulant in the environment, and is enhanced when the agents interact as a result of increased consensus within subpopulations. Our framework sheds light on the role of spatial perception and transients in search movement and collective sensing of the environment.

Abstract:We study analytically an intermittent search process in one dimension. There is an immobile target at the origin and a searcher undergoes a discrete time jump process starting at x_{0}≥0, where successive jumps are drawn independently from an arbitrary jump distribution f(η). In addition, with a probability 0≤r<1, the position of the searcher is reset to its initial position x_{0}. The efficiency of the search strategy is characterized by the mean time to find the target, i.e., the mean first passage time (MFPT) to the origin. For arbitrary jump distribution f(η), initial position x_{0} and resetting probability r, we compute analytically the MFPT. For the heavy-tailed Lévy stable jump distribution characterized by the Lévy index 0<μ<2, we show that, for any given x_{0}, the MFPT has a global minimum in the (μ,r) plane at (μ^{*}(x_{0}),r^{*}(x_{0})). We find a remarkable first-order phase transition as x_{0} crosses a critical value x_{0}^{*} at which the optimal parameters change discontinuously. Our analytical results are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:We study the kinetics for the search of an immobile target by randomly moving searchers that detect it only upon encounter. The searchers perform intermittent random walks on a one-dimensional lattice. Each searcher can step on a nearest neighbor site with probability α or go off lattice with probability 1 − α to move in a random direction until it lands back on the lattice at a fixed distance L away from the departure point. Considering α and L as optimization parameters, we seek to enhance the chances of successful detection by minimizing the probability PN that the target remains undetected up to the maximal search time N. We show that even in this simple model, a number of very efficient search strategies can lead to a decrease of PN by orders of magnitude upon appropriate choices of α and L. We demonstrate that, in general, such optimal intermittent strategies are much more efficient than Brownian searches and are as efficient as search algorithms based on random walks with heavy-tailed Cauchy jump-length distributions. In addition, such intermittent strategies appear to be more advantageous than Lévy-based ones in that they lead to more thorough exploration of visited regions in space and thus lend themselves to parallelization of the search processes.

Abstract:Multiple-scale mobility is ubiquitous in nature and has become instrumental for understanding and modeling animal foraging behavior. However, the impact of individual movements on the long-term stability of populations remains largely unexplored. We analyze deterministic and stochastic Lotka Volterra systems, where mobile predators consume scarce resources (prey) confined in patches. In fragile systems (that is, those unfavorable to species coexistence), the predator species has a maximized abundance and is resilient to degraded prey conditions when individual mobility is multiple scaled. Within the Lévy flight model, highly superdiffusive foragers rarely encounter prey patches and go extinct, whereas normally diffusing foragers tend to proliferate within patches, causing extinctions by overexploitation. Lévy flights of intermediate index allow a sustainable balance between patch exploitation and regeneration over wide ranges of demographic rates. Our analytical and simulated results can explain field observations and suggest that scale-free random movements are an important mechanism by which entire populations adapt to scarcity in fragmented ecosystems.

Abstract:Animal groups collaborate with one another throughout their lives to better comprehend their surroundings. Here, we try to model, using continuous random walks, how the entire process of birth, reproduction, and death might impact the searching process. We attempt to simulate an ecosystem where the post-reproductive foragers leave their colonies to discover where the targets are while others stay and breed at the base. Actually, a group of foragers searches for a location from where they access the targets for food supply. Particularly, we have explored a hypothetical situation in which the relocation to the new position depends on the agreement level of the species as well as an additional waiting time due to this agreement level. In this backdrop, detailed numerical results reveal that searching for an optimal position at an optimal mean time can be captured for a suitable range of the agreement level. We have also shown, for a given agreement level, the optimal mean time linearly increases with the Death-to-Birth ratio.

A Counterexample to the Lévy Flight Foraging Hypothesis in the Narrow Capture Framework

Abstract:The Lévy flight foraging hypothesis asserts that biological organisms have evolved to employ (truncated) Lévy flight searches due to such strategies being more efficient than those based on Brownian motion. However, we provide here a concrete two-dimensional counterexample in which Brownian search is more efficient. In fact, we show that the efficiency of Lévy searches worsens the farther the Lévy flight tail index deviates from the Brownian limit. Our counterexample is based on the framework of the classic narrow capture problem in which a random search is performed for a small target within a confined search domain. Our results are obtained via three avenues: Monte Carlo simulations of the discrete search processes, finite difference solutions and a matched asymptotic analysis of the elliptic (pseudo)-differential equations of the corresponding continuum limits.

Abstract:Random search has gained increasing attention from researchers in increasingly many fields and many papers have shown that Lévy searching strategy achieves a higher searching efficiency when the targets are sparse in some area. However, we have to face the question that what is the relationship between the optimal searching strategy and the target distribution. In this paper, three different searching strategies, i.e., δ-distribution (fixed flight distance), Gaussian distribution, and Lévy distribution, and three different target distributions, i.e., uniform distribution, Gaussian-like distribution, and Lévy-like distribution, are considered. We optimize the searching efficiency for three different searching strategies theoretically, which can be used to tune the parameters in the later experiments. According to the experimental results, it is found that Lévy searching strategy achieves the highest efficiency for uniform-distributed targets, while Gaussian searching strategy performs the best for Gaussian-distributed and some specific Lévy -like distributed targets. This study validates that the optimal searching strategy is closely related to the target distribution.

Abstract:Efficient search acts as a strong selective force in biological systems ranging from cellular populations to predator-prey systems. The search processes commonly involve finding a stationary or mobile target within a heterogeneously structured environment where obstacles limit migration. An open generic question is whether random or directionally biased motions or a combination of both provide an optimal search efficiency and how that depends on the motility and density of targets and obstacles. To address this question, we develop a simple model that involves a random walker searching for its targets in a heterogeneous medium of bond percolation square lattice and used mean first passage time (MFPT, $\langle T \rangle$) as an indication of average search time. Our analysis reveals a dual effect of directional bias on the minimum value of $\langle T \rangle$. For a homogeneous medium, directionality always decreases $\langle T \rangle$ and a pure directional migration (a ballistic motion) serves as the optimized strategy; while for a heterogeneous environment, we find that the optimized strategy involves a combination of directed and random migrations. The relative contribution of these modes is determined by the density of obstacles and motility of targets. Existence of randomness and motility of targets add to the efficiency of search. Our study reveals generic and simple rules that govern search efficiency. Our findings might find application in a number of areas including immunology, cell biology, and ecology.

Abstract:Collective animal movement fascinates children and scientists alike. One of the most commonly given explanations for collective animal movement is improved foraging. Animals are hypothesized to gain from searching for food in groups. Here, we use a computer simulation to analyze how moving in a group assists searching for food. We use a well-established collective movement model that only assumes local interactions between individuals without any leadership, in order to examine the benefits of group searching. We focus on how the sensory abilities of the simulated individuals, and specifically their ability to detect food and to follow neighbours, influence searching dynamics and searching performance. We show that local interactions between neighbors are sufficient for the formation of groups, which search more efficiently than independently moving individuals. Once a member of a group finds food, this information diffuses through the group and results in a convergence of up to 85\% of group members on the food. Interestingly, this convergence behavior can emerge from the local interactions between group members without a need to explicitly define it. In order to understand the principles underlying the group's performance, we perturb many of the model's basic parameters, including its social, environmental and sensory parameters. We test a wide range of biological-plausible sensory regimes, relevant to different species and different sensory modalities and examine how they effect group-foraging performance. This thorough analysis of model parameters allows for the generalization of our results to a wide range of organisms, which rely on different sensory modalities, explaining why they move and forage in groups.

Abstract:This book chapter introduces to the problem to which extent search strategies of foraging biological organisms can be identified by statistical data analysis and mathematical modeling. A famous paradigm in this field is the Levy Flight Hypothesis: It states that under certain mathematical conditions Levy flights, which are a key concept in the theory of anomalous stochastic processes, provide an optimal search strategy. This hypothesis may be understood biologically as the claim that Levy flights represent an evolutionary adaptive optimal search strategy for foraging organisms. Another interpretation, however, is that Levy flights emerge from the interaction between a forager and a given (scale-free) distribution of food sources. These hypotheses are discussed controversially in the current literature. We give examples and counterexamples of experimental data and their analyses supporting and challenging them.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional search process under stochastic resetting conditions. A target is located at $b\geq0$ and a searcher, starting from the origin, performs a discrete-time random walk with independent jumps drawn from a heavy-tailed distribution. Before each jump, there is a given probability $r$ of restarting the walk from the initial position. The efficiency of a "myopic search" - in which the search stops upon crossing the target for the first time - is usually characterized in terms of the first-passage time $\tau$. On the other hand, great relevance is encapsulated by the leapover length $l = x_{\tau} - b$, which measures how far from the target the search ends. For symmetric heavy-tailed jump distributions, in the absence of resetting the average leapover is always infinite. Here we show instead that resetting induces a finite average leapover $\ell_b(r)$ if the mean jump length is finite. We compute exactly $\ell_b(r)$ and determine the condition under which resetting allows for nontrivial optimization, i.e., for the existence of $r^*$ such that $\ell_b(r^*)$ is minimal and smaller than the average leapover of the single jump.
