Abstract:This qualitative study adopts a phenomenological and symbolic interactionist approach to comprehensively explore substance abuse among street children in Lilongwe, Malawi. The research aims to uncover the complex sociocultural, economic, and environmental determinants influencing substance abuse within this marginalized cohort. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews, the study engages with street children to understand their subjective experiences, perceptions, and interpretations of substance abuse within their community context. Employing convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling strategies, the research collected data from street children, acknowledging their transient nature and societal challenges. Thematic analysis was conducted on interview transcripts to derive comprehensive insights. Results revealed five key thematic areas: familial absence and emotional void, societal normalization and peer pressure, economic hardships, coping mechanisms, environmental accessibility, and peer influence and belongingness. These themes highlighted the intricate interplay between personal experiences, socio-environmental factors, and peer dynamics, shaping the prevalence and persistence of substance abuse among street children. This study's implications for practice underscore the need for tailored interventions and support mechanisms addressing substance abuse within this demographic. It emphasizes the urgency for context-specific strategies and policy formulations aimed at ameliorating the challenges faced by street children dealing with substance abuse in Malawi. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of substance abuse among marginalized street children, advocating for compassionate and contextually sensitive interventions within this overlooked drug abusers' population subset.

Abstract:: The study analyses the causes and effects of drug abuse on academic performance of pupils at Mindolo secondary school in Kitwe District, Zambia. This study used a descriptive survey design to find out the causes and effects of drug abuse on pupil’s academic performance. Questionnaire and interviews were the instruments used to collect data and data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, (SPSS). The mean and the standard deviation were used to see the trends in the data. The results of the study reviewed that Alcohol was frequently abused by pupils at Mindolo secondary school and that factors such as peer pressure, low self-esteem, and availability of drugs contributed to the abuse of drugs. The abuse of these drugs has led to poor performance, absenteeism, and low concentration in class amongst pupils. The other effects of drug abuse were suspensions, dropping out of school, and failure to participate in various school activities.
Drug-related crime and poverty in South Africa

Abstract:This paper argues that the link between poverty and drug-related crime might be spurious. We take an empirical approach to investigate the causality and plausibility of this link. Firstly, we regress crime against envisaged explanatory variables in order to estimate the contribution of poverty to crime. Secondly, data is analysed using an ARDL ECM. The quarterly sample data for our estimation is for the period 1995–2016. We found a strong association between crime and poverty both in the short and long run. We recommend the government should focus on none income linked factors in dealing with the scourge of drug-related crime. As demonstrated in this study, various drug-related crimes are driven by socio-economic factors.

Abstract:Society today is still naïve that some children are no longer innocent, beautiful souls but callous and dangerous to the community. The escalating crime incidents by juveniles make it imperative to concede the rampant prevalence of juvenile delinquency. This research sought to identify the probable indicators of juvenile delinquency in the milieu of the unprecedented global trend. The study used a mixed-method approach guided by the pragmatist research paradigm. A descriptive research design enhanced an appreciation of participants’ multiple realities based on their lived experiences premised on qualitative and quantitative research. Random sampling was used in selecting 209 students to complete a translated questionnaire. An interview was used to collect data from teachers and parents selected purposively. Data was analysed using frequency count. Data from interviews was thematically analysed. Significant findings were that mental illness, social conditions such as neighbourhood location, home conditions such as family size, school conditions such as strictness of school and environmental factors were the indicators of juvenile delinquency. After-school programs to increase school time counselling services at schools were some of the recommendations by key informants on curbing juvenile delinquency. The overall conclusion is that probable indicators of juvenile delinquency result from several factors such as individual, home, social environment, and school.

Abstract:Adolescents experiencing multiple vulnerabilities, including poverty, curtailed education, transactional sex and early childbearing, are at risk of poor mental health. In Zimbabwe, girls who are pregnant or new mothers and involved in selling sex struggle to cope with the combined pressures of parenthood, financial insecurity, and social stigma. A pilot intervention brought such girls together into self-help groups to increase peer support, resources and skills.This study aimed to explore whether and how participation in a self-help group intervention affected vulnerable young mothers' experiences and perceptions of mental health stressors.Self-help groups received 12 participatory sessions over 6 months. Eighteen semi-structured interviews and three focus group discussions were held with participants and drop-outs. Before and after the intervention, participants completed the locally validated 14-item Shona Symptom Questionnaire tool to indicate the probable prevalence of common mental health disorders.Adolescent girls described mutually reinforcing stressors in their lives and reported low self-esteem and anxiety. Key themes emerging from qualitative data centred around girls' struggles with adverse life events, the burden of new motherhood, social isolation related to sex work and self-help groups as a source of hope. Participants joined groups to obtain support and felt their mental well-being improved due to new social networks, feelings of solidarity with peers, and increased confidence for positive action, that is, seeking health services for themselves and their babies. Prior to enrolment 16% showed signs of possible common mental disorders falling to 2% at follow-up.Participants believed involvement in interactive self-help groups improved their mental health by strengthening peer support and engendering hope for the future. Although reduced mental distress cannot be attributed to the programme, the pilot intervention offers a low-cost approach that could be rigorously tested and adapted to a wide range of community settings.

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic nature of sex work is important for explaining the course of HIV epidemics. While health and development interventions targeting sex workers may alter the dynamics of the sex trade in particular localities, little has been done to explore how large-scale social and structural changes, such as economic recessions-outside of the bounds of organizational intervention-may reconfigure social norms and attitudes with regards to sex work. Zimbabwe's economic collapse in 2009, following a period (2000-2009) of economic decline, within a declining HIV epidemic, provides a unique opportunity to study community perceptions of the impact of socio-economic upheaval on the sex trade. We conducted focus group discussions with 122 community members in rural eastern Zimbabwe in January-February 2009. Groups were homogeneous by gender and occupation and included female sex workers, married women, and men who frequented bars. The focus groups elicited discussion around changes (comparing contemporaneous circumstances in 2009 to their memories of circumstances in 2000) in the demand for, and supply of, paid sex, and how sex workers and clients adapted to these changes, and with what implications for their health and well-being. Transcripts were thematically analyzed. The analysis revealed how changing economic conditions, combined with an increased awareness and fear of HIV-changing norms and local attitudes toward sex work-had altered the demand for commercial sex. In response, sex work dispersed from the bars into the wider community, requiring female sex workers to employ different tactics to attract clients. Hyperinflation meant that sex workers had to accept new forms of payment, including sex-on-credit and commodities. Further impacting the demand for commercial sex work was a poverty-driven increase in transactional sex. The economic upheaval in Zimbabwe effectively reorganized the market for sex by reducing previously dominant forms of commercial sex, while simultaneously providing new opportunities for women to exchange sex in less formal and more risky transactions. Efforts to measure and respond to the contribution of sex work to HIV transmission need to guard against unduly static definitions and consider the changing socioeconomic context and how this can cause shifts in behavior.

Abstract:The war on drugs is an effort to of the Philippine government to combat illegal drug use by greatly increasing penalties, enforcement, and incarceration for drug offenders. But the impacts have led to consequences such as decreased household income, incidents of child labor, and children dropping out of school, thus demonstrating the war on drugs deteriorated the overall wellbeing of children living in poverty. This study explored the challenges encountered by the families affected in the war on drugs of the government. The study focused on a case study of the social consequences of the war on drugs for affected families. The case study research design was employed in these studies. It was participated by the chosen respondents of Barangay Gata Diot, Clarin, Misamis Occidental. Interview responses were analyzed using Yin’s 5-step data analysis approach. This study generated four (4) themes: (1) Emotional Distress (2) Family, Relatives and Peer Influence (3) Frustration (4) Sustainability of Livelihood. In this study the researcher analyzed the data using Yin’s 5-step data analysis approach. The second step involves the researcher breaking down the data to reduce and eliminate recurring themes of the phenomena. As a result, most of the participants have different responses on the social consequences of the on drugs in the affected families. These challenge gives a big impact to the affected families emotionally, mentally and financially. But despite of the challenge they were encountered, the participant was able to fine alternative solution to survive in that situation. Further, the affected families in war on drugs must be given a full support by our government, especially in strengthening community-based initiatives, encourage the development of community-based initiatives that promote awareness, education, and prevention of drug abuse. Such initiatives can include support groups, counselling services, and educational campaigns targeting families and individuals at risk. And develop comprehensive support programs just liked establish specialized support programs aimed at addressing the specific needs of families affected by the war on drugs. And lastly, these programs should provide emotional, psychological, and financial support to help families cope with the challenges they face.
Stepping Stones and Creating Futures intervention: shortened interrupted time series evaluation of a behavioural and structural health promotion and violence prevention intervention for young people in informal settlements in Durban, South Africa

Abstract:Background: Gender-based violence and HIV are highly prevalent in the harsh environment of informal settlements and reducing violence here is very challenging. The group intervention Stepping Stones has been shown to reduce men's perpetration of violence in more rural areas, but violence experienced by women in the study was not affected. Economic empowerment interventions with gender training can protect older women from violence, but microloan interventions have proved challenging with young women. We investigated whether combining a broad economic empowerment intervention and Stepping Stones could impact on violence among young men and women. The intervention, Creating Futures, was developed as a new generation of economic empowerment intervention, which enabled livelihood strengthening though helping participants find work or set up a business, and did not give cash or make loans. Methods: We piloted Stepping Stones with Creating Futures in two informal settlements of Durban with 232 out of school youth, mostly aged 18-30 and evaluated with a shortened interrupted time series of two baseline surveys and at 28 and 58 weeks post-baseline. 94/110 men and 111/122 women completed the last assessment, 85.5% and 90.2% respectively of those enrolled. To determine trend, we built random effects regression models with each individual as the cluster for each variable, and measured the slope of the line across the time points. Results: Men's mean earnings in the past month increased by 247% from R411 (~$40) to R1015 (~$102, and women's by 278% R 174 (~$17) to R 484 (about $48) (trend test, p < 0.0001). There was a significant reduction in women's experience of the combined measure of physical and/or sexual IPV in the prior three months from 30.3% to 18.9% (p = 0.037). This was not seen for men. However both men and women scored significantly better on gender attitudes and men significantly reduced their controlling practices in their relationship. The prevalence of moderate or severe depression symptomatology among men and suicidal thoughts decreased significantly (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.01). Conclusions: These findings are very positive for an exploratory study and indicate that the Creating Futures/Stepping Stones intervention has potential for impact in these difficult areas with young men and women. Further evaluation is needed.

Abstract:Abstract Background The earlier younger people begin to use drugs, the more vulnerable they become to both their short term and long-term harmful effects. The overall aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse, the socio-demographic characteristic, perception of abuse and associated economic indicators and mental disorders and how they inform potential intervention in a cohort of Kenyan students. Methods This was a cross-sectional study on a total of 9742 high school, college and university students. We used tools to document socio-demographic characteristics, economic indicators, drug and alcohol use and related perceptions and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) related psychiatric disorders. Basic descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations for numerical variables and frequencies for nominal and ordinal variables) were done. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association and odds ratios between the use of a given substance and the use of the other substances, as well as associations with the various available socio-demographic factors and economic indicators. Chi-squared tests were used in socio-economic characteristics disaggregated by current alcohol use. Results The mean age was 21.4 ± 2.4; median = 21.3 (range 15–43) years. We found a wide range of different drugs of abuse. Alcohol abuse was the commonest and inhalants were the least, with different perceptions.Both alcohol and drug abuse were associated with various economic indicators and various mental disorders. Conclusion This study has established for the first time in Kenya the multifaceted associations and predictors of alcohol and drug abuse in a cross-sectional student population ranging from high school to college and university levels. In the process, the study contributes to global data on the subject. These associations call for an integrated and multifaceted approach in addressing alcohol and substance abuse. This approach should take into account various associations and predictors as part of holistic approach in both public awareness and clinical interventions.

Abstract:Substance abuse among the youth is emerging as one of the gravest social and Public Health global concerns. This paper aims to share the psychological experiences of the youth who used a newly invented local drug called nyaope in rural communities, Limpopo province, South Africa. A qualitative study, using focus group discussion was conducted among nyaope users between 18-35 years. Thematic data analysis was applied to develop themes, sub-themes, and categories. Findings indicated that nyaope users encountered devastating psychological experiences such as; self-blame, stress, mental relaxation, drug dependency, and addiction. Furthermore, the life of nyaope users seem to revolve around acquiring more nyaope than seeking rehabilitative interventions to counteract the addiction. The Ubuntu theory was used to guide intervention in combating the nyaope problem. It is essential to recruit, train and capacitate more social workers and social auxiliary workers who would specialize in substance abuse services and prevention programmes. There should also be more rehabilitation centres to curb the growing number of drug addicts in the local communities as well as increased funding for non-government organizations that render substance abuse prevention services. Abstract:Abstract Objectives Social isolation and stigma contribute to poor mental health outcomes. Adolescent mothers in Zimbabwe often experience isolation and stigma, lacking social support and resources to navigate motherhood. The study tested the effectiveness of a community-based peer support intervention to mitigate social isolation and stigma of adolescent motherhood in Harare, Zimbabwe. Methods Community health workers (n = 12) and peer educators (n = 12) in the intervention arm were recruited and trained on co-facilitating peer support groups. Adolescent mothers aged 15–18 years from two low-income high-density communities in Harare were recruited, using a quasi-experimental design. The intervention arm (n = 104) participated in the peer support groups and both arms completed sociodemographic, base-, mid-, and end-line surveys (control arm n = 79). Peer support groups (12 groups with 6–12 participants in each) met in-person twice a month and completed 12 sessions from May to August 2019 addressing participant-identified topics such as income generation and depression. WhatsApp Messenger was used for training and implementation support. Key community stakeholders discussed project progress and recommendations to improve adolescent mothers’ health. Data were analyzed using Stata 15. Results The intervention arm reported lower depressive symptoms and common mental disorders and higher overall, family, friends, and significant-other support, compared to control. The intervention arm felt more engaged with peers, knew who and where to turn to for help, and had coping, parenting and communication strategies to manage life challenges. Conclusions for Practice The intervention mitigated social isolation and stigma and thereby improved mental health and social support among adolescent mothers in Harare. Prevalence of substance and hazardous alcohol use and their association with risky sexual behaviour among youth: findings from a population-based survey in Zimbabwe

Abstract:Objectives Hazardous drinking (HD) and substance use (SU) can lead to disinhibited behaviour and are both growing public health problems among Southern African youths. We investigated the prevalence of SU and HD and their association with risky sexual behaviour among youth in Zimbabwe. Design Data analysis from a population-based survey conducted between October 2021 and June 2022 to ascertain the outcomes of a cluster randomised trial (CHIEDZA: Trial registration number: NCT03719521 ). Trial Stage: Post-results. Setting 24 communities in three provinces in Zimbabwe. Participants Youth aged 18–24 years living in randomly selected households. Outcome measures HD was defined as an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test score ≥8, SU was defined as ever use of ≥1 commonly used substances in the local setting. Results Of 17 585 participants eligible for this analysis, 61% were women and the median age was 20 (IQR: 19–22) years. Overall, 4.5% and 7.0% of participants reported HD and SU, respectively. Men had a substantially higher prevalence than women of HD (8.2% vs 1.9%) and SU (15.1% vs 1.5%). Among men, after adjusting for socio-demographic factors, we found increased odds of having >1 sexual partner in those who engaged in SU (adjusted OR (aOR)=2.67, 95% CI: 2.21 to 3.22), HD (aOR=3.40, 95% CI: 2.71 to 4.26) and concurrent HD and SU (aOR=4.57,95% CI: 3.59 to 5.81) compared with those who did not engage in HD or SU. Similarly, there were increased odds of receiving/providing transactional sex among men who engaged in SU (aOR=2.51, 95% CI: 1.68 to 3.74), HD (aOR=3.60, 95% CI: 2.24 to 5.79), and concurrent HD and SU (aOR=7.74, 95% CI: 5.44 to 11.0). SU was associated with 22% increased odds of inconsistent condom use in men (aOR=1.22, 95% CI: 1.03 to 1.47). In women, the odds of having >1 sexual partner and having transactional sex were also increased among those who engaged in SU and HD. Conclusion SU and HD are associated with sexual behaviours that increase the risk of HIV acquisition in youth. Sexual and reproductive health interventions must consider HD and SU as potential drivers of risky sexual behaviour in youths.

Abstract:Abuse of illicit drugs among youngsters has been a subject of investigation in the author's social research on HIV in China.Government statistics show that the absolute majority of drug users in China are youngsters whose initiation into the world of illicit drugs is mostly due to the sway of friends and peers.Their relapse after releasing from detoxification centers is also mostly caused by friends and peers who abuse drugs as well.The power of peer pressure and its relations with drug abuse are treated as typical sociological issues in this article.The following analysis is based on a discussion devoted to the concept of"anomie"and"stress theory."The evidence being analyzed comes from self reports by young drug users.A major argument of this article is that China's examination-oriented education system is at the root of a subculture that gives rise to circles of friends and peers prone to youth delinquency.

Abstract:One of the numerous unfavorable trends in emerging nations is the education gap, which appears to have been sparked by the rising number of parent deaths, which are primarily attributable to Cyclone Idai’s devastation. In the Chimanimani District of Manicaland, Zimbabwe, the phenomenological research design examined the effect of humanistic education on the performance lag address program. The triangulated data were gathered at four secondary schools using focus group interviews, document analysis, and open-ended questionnaires. Eight adolescents and vulnerable learners, four school administrators, four guidance and counselling teachers, and four other volunteers were purposefully chosen, totalling 16 participants in the study. The results showed that many vulnerable children and adolescents who are falling behind in school continue to experience loneliness, inferiority complexes, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, lack of concentration in class, and other negative emotions that interfere with their ability to effectively assimilate and accommodate learning materials within their learning environment. Adolescents and vulnerable children were affected by a particular set of conditions, which were made worse by poverty and parental duties. In light of the idea above, a number of learners voiced their profound heartbreak over a position from which escape is difficult, particularly in an unpleasant or trying one. A number of orphaned adolescents and vulnerable children were contemplating quitting school so they might escape the stigma and loss of respect they were experiencing from others. This thorough examination makes several important recommendations, including the distribution of educational materials to vulnerable children and orphaned adolescents, the implementation of interventions for orphans and vulnerable learners, and the development of non-threatening environments that take into account their needs.

Abstract:The beginning of the 1980s saw the birth of Zimbabwe as a result of a protracted liberation war. It coincided with global interest in primary health care, the concept of universal primary school education and, unfortunately, moves towards economic stabilization and structural adjustment programmes. Economic structural adjustment was adopted by several sub Saharan African countries with dire consequences for the poor and vulnerable. Zimbabwe's commitment to social justice and to equitable distribution of resources demonstrated a practical move away from the culture of rhetoric so characteristic of many governments and non-governmental organisations and agencies. This commitment has been translated into impressive improvements in health and education. Current evidence shows that education has had a positive impact on health and related areas like contraceptive use, child mortality and the nutrition status of children. Conversely nutrition and health conditions among school children are important determinants of educational outcomes. Hitherto Zimbabwe's economy has been sufficiently strong to avoid excessive dependence on the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other foreign financial institutions. Unfortunately, however, the current economic recession together with economic structural adjustment programmes are beginning to have a negative impact on health and education. Will true synergism between health and education weather these structural problems? It seems that the people and government of Zimbabwe have the capacity and resolve to weather such a storm.
A qualitative study to understand drivers of psychoactive substance use among Nepalese youth

Abstract:Background Psychoactive substance use among youth is an emerging public health issue in Nepal. This exploratory study aimed to better understand the drivers of psychoactive substance use among Nepalese youth in Rupandehi district of Nepal. Materials and methods This study used a qualitative approach for data collection. Both in-depth interviews (IDI, seven participants) and focus group discussions (FGD, 13 participants) were conducted among study participants who self-reported as psychoactive substance users or had history of psychoactive substance use. Participants for IDI were aged between 11 and 24 years and between 18 and 35 years old for FGDs. Semi-structured interview guides were prepared separately for IDIs and FDGs. Interviews were conducted in Nepali language and were audio recorded, which were there transcribed and translated into English for coding and analyses. In addition, interviews notes were taken by two research assistants. An inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results This study identified a range of drivers of psychoactive substances use among Nepalese youths. Themes included (i) socio-cultural factors, (ii) individual factors, (iii) academic environment, (iv) physical environment and the (v) influence of media. The socio-cultural factors were categorized into sub-themes of family relationships, ethnic identity and psychoactive substance use and lack of social acceptance. Individual factors included peer pressure, stress relief and coping with financial challenges. Accessibility and availability of psychoactive substances in the surrounding environment and lack of monitoring and reinforcement of rules/ law and regulations were other drivers to psychoactive substance use among this Nepalese youth cohort. Conclusion Our study identified several important drivers of psychoactive substance use among youth in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. Future works are anticipated to further explore youth initiation and use of psychoactive substances and support the design of interventions that address these risk factors to reduce and prevent subsequent harms.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Distress Among Adolescents and Youth in Zimbabwe

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a global public health crisis associated with physical and poor mental health outcomes. The current study examined the prevalence and association between individual and cumulative ACEs with mental distress among adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. Data from the 2017 Violence Against Children and Youth Survey were utilized (13–25 years old, n = 8,715). Bivariate analysis was conducted using chi-square tests to obtain the prevalence estimates. Two sets of logistic regression models were conducted to determine significant associations between independent variables (i.e., experiencing childhood physical, emotional, and sexual violence; witnessing intimate partner violence (IPV) and community violence; orphan status; and cumulative ACE exposure) and the dependent variable (i.e., mental distress in the past 30 days as measured by Kelser 6). 28.4% of the adolescents and youth reported experiencing mental distress in the past 30 days. Regarding ACEs, cumulative ACE exposure (34.7%; adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.13) and individual ACEs (i.e., experiencing childhood physical violence [39.3%; AOR = 1.41], emotional violence [55.8%; AOR = 2.67], sexual violence [50.8%; AOR = 2.00], witnessing community violence [47.3%; AOR = 1.52], witnessing IPV [43.1%; AOR = 1.47], and being orphaned during childhood [33.6%; AOR = 1.24]) were significantly associated with higher prevalence rates and odds of experiencing mental distress in the past 30 days among adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. These findings show that ACEs are highly prevalent and increases the risk of mental distress for vulnerable adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. Effective interventions to reduce violence exposure in families, schools, and communities are essential to mitigate the negative consequences of ACEs and mental distress of adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. Strengthening child protection policies and involving social workers, psychologists, and mental health workers are also crucial for safeguarding vulnerable children who might be impacted by ACEs in Zimbabwe. Implications for future research are further discussed.

Abstract:Zimbabwe's economy generates a large amount of foreign currency from a number of sources but the country is nevertheless experiencing a serious foreign exchange crisis. In spite of substantial forex revenues, the country is plagued by excessive inflation and currency instability. The study looks into how Zimbabwe's currency crisis has affected the financial systems. The interplay between the supply of money, the rate of inflation, the movement in the exchange rate, and spending by government have been examined to understand reasons of the currency crisis in Zimbabwe. The research was hinged on the interpretivist paradigm and a quantitative approach used for data analysis as predestined by the purpose of this research. Secondary data were reviewed for the analysis. Descriptive statistics was employed for the data analysis, correlation coefficient was employed to evaluate the level of interaction between the variables. The findings showed that the exchange rate between the local currency and US dollar declined from ZWL 24.60 to ZWL 810 between January 2020 and November 2022 antagonizing the money supply growth at the same period, from ZWL 36.27bn to ZWL 2.07tn respectively. The foreign currency premium significantly fell to 32% as of August 2022. It was therefore recommended that since the excessive expansion of the money supply through borrowing appears to be the main issue causing the foreign exchange crisis, the Zimbabwean government must reduce its borrowing to prevent fiscal deficits. Secondly, the government should intervene in the pricing distortions caused by numerous players as a result of the absence of a market-wide consensus exchange rate. Thirdly, there should be implementation of fiscal rationalization policies and adherence to the requirements of the Zimbabwe Debt Management Act. Further studies could concentrate on examining the macro factors that lead to this economic distress.

Abstract:There is a marked affect of surrounding social environment on the behaviour of a human being. The kind of environment reflects in the nature of the behaviour of a human being. The objective of our research is to see the affect of some social factor on drug abuser and non abuser viz inhabitation, father’s education, father’s occupation, father’s Income etc. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among student (20-25year) studying in P.G. in Magadh University using the Drug Abuse Schedule and Personal and Family Data Sheet. A total of 300 students studying in various department of were taken for study purpose. A significant association existed between social factor and Drug abuse behaviour in youth. The present study has both theoretical and practical application. Keeping this in view the present work was undertaken.

Abstract:Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use form a risk factor for health and social problems during adolescence. From a socio-ecological model, perceptions of 85 young people and 10 stakeholders on the types of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs used and the predisposing and protective factors were explored; among adolescents at the Kenyan Coast in the Kilifi County. We found that the consumption of home-brewed alcohol, tobacco and marijuana smoking, and khat chewing was common and requires multi-component and community-centered intervention. Countering alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use needs enforcement of strong measures to regulate access to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for minors; addressing social and cultural norms; strategies for poverty alleviation; and community empowerment.
