Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:The chemical synthesis of organic molecules involves, at its very essence, the creation of carbon–carbon bonds. In this context, the aldol reaction is among the most important synthetic methods, and a wide variety of catalytic and stereoselective versions have been reported. However, aldolizations yielding tertiary aldols, which result from the reaction of an enolate with a ketone, are challenging and only a few catalytic asymmetric Mukaiyama aldol reactions with ketones as electrophiles have been described. These methods typically require relatively high catalyst loadings, deliver substandard enantioselectivity or need special reagents or additives. We now report extremely potent catalysts that readily enable the reaction of silyl ketene acetals with a diverse set of ketones to furnish the corresponding tertiary aldol products in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Parts per million (ppm) levels of catalyst loadings can be routinely used and provide fast and quantitative product formation in high enantiopurity. In situ spectroscopic studies and acidity measurements suggest a silylium ion based, asymmetric counteranion-directed Lewis acid catalysis mechanism.

Abstract:Dual catalyst-controlled intramolecular unactivated C(sp(3))-H amination and oxygenation of carbamates merging visible-light photocatalysis and earth-abundant transition metal catalysis have been reported. Useful amino alcohol and diol derivatives could be selectively obtained from readily available tertiary alcohol derivatives. The possible mechanisms have been proposed via a 1,5-HAT process followed by Lewis acid-controlled cyclization. The nickel and zinc catalysts inhibit the formation of oxygenation and amination products, respectively. An interesting phenomenon of chirality transfer is also observed.

Abstract:NHC‐catalytic activation of ynals and alkynoic acid derivatives provided versatile reactions that involve acetylenic Breslow and/or acylazolium as key intermediates. Diverse transformations have been established for access to molecules with unique skeletons. Herein we summarize the recent achievements in NHC‐catalyzed reactions employing acetylenic Breslow and/or acylazolium as key intermediates. N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis has been developed as a powerful tool in modern synthetic chemistry. NHC catalytic activation of ynals and alkynoic acid derivatives provided versatile reactions that involve acetylenic Breslow and/or acylazolium as key intermediates, and diverse transformations have been established for access to molecules with unique skeletons in efficient fashions. Herein we summarize the recent achievements in NHC‐catalyzed reactions involving acetylenic Breslow and/or acylazolium intermediates. Different reactions belonging to three catalytic modes, including (1) conjugate additions to acetylenic Breslow derived α,β‐unsaturated acylazolium intermediates, (2) β‐umpolung of ynals via acetylenic Breslow intermediates, and (3) conjugate additions to acetylenic acylazolium intermediates, are emphasized with examples and plausible mechanisms cited to guide a better understanding.

Abstract:Synthesis of α-aminoarylacetic acids with good yield in the presence of phase transfer catalyst (PTC) under sonication has been studied. Results obtained are superior to those by other similar methods. The data show that β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD) is a more efficient catalyst than other PTC. Optimum reaction conditions and a preliminary mechanism are also discussed.
Heterogeneous Brønsted Catalysis in the Solvent-Free and Multigram-Scale Synthesis of Polyalcohol Acrylates: The Case Study of Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate

Abstract:This article presents a thorough investigation into the synthesis of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) via the esterification reaction of trimethylolpropane (TMP) with acrylic acid using AmberliteTM 120 IR (H+), Amberlyst® 15, and DowexTM 50WX8 resins as heterogeneous catalysts. Preliminary comparative tests explored the impact of air flow on water removal during the reaction and different acid-to-alcohol molar ratios (3:1, 6:1, or 9:1 mol:mol). The findings revealed that introducing air significantly enhances TMPTA yield and -OH group conversion, particularly at a 6:1 acid-to-alcohol molar ratio. Based on cost considerations, AmberliteTM 120 IR (H+) was selected as the preferred catalyst for further optimization. This included evaluating the effect of catalyst loading (10%, 5.0%, and 2.5% w/wtot) and assessing the impact of a pre-drying process on resin efficiency. The study concluded that optimal conditions did not necessitate drying, requiring 120 °C, a catalyst loading of 10% w/wtot, a 4 h reaction time, an acid:alcohol ratio of 6:1 mol:mol, the presence of MEHQ (0.1% mol/molAA), and air bubbling at 6 ± 1 Nl/h. Catalyst recycling was effectively implemented with a slight reduction in catalytic activity over consecutive runs. Furthermore, the study explored a scaled-up system with a mechanical stirrer, demonstrating the potential for multi-hundred grams scale-up. Considerations for optimizing the air flow stripping system are also highlighted. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into designing and optimizing the esterification process for TMPTA synthesis, laying the foundation for potential industrial applications.

Abstract:Efficient catalytic methods that allow the use of simple and abundant chemical feedstocks for the preparation of synthetically versatile compounds are central to modern synthetic chemistry. Acetylene is a basic feedstock with a remarkable production over one million tons per year, although it is underutilized in the stereoselective synthesis of fine chemicals. Here we report a facile catalytic multicomponent reaction that allows for the enantio- and diastereoselective allylboration of acetylene gas. This process is catalyzed by a chiral copper catalyst, operates without specialized equipment or pressurization, and provides chiral skipped dienes bearing stereodefined and orthogonally functionalized olefins with excellent levels of chemo-, regio-, enantio- and diastereoselectivity. The combined stereochemical features and orthogonal functionalization make the products privileged structural scaffolds to access the complete set of stereoisomers of the chiral skipped diene core through simple enantio- and diastereodivergent pathways. The utility of the method is demonstrated with the enantioselective synthesis of three bioactive natural skipped diene products, namely (+)-Nyasol, (+)-Hinokiresinol and Phorbasin C, and other related synthetically relevant chiral molecules.

Abstract:It is one of the most attractive types of asymmetric synthesis that chiral commpounts are generated under the influence of chiral catalysts. In recent years catalytic asymmetric Michael addition by chiral metal complexes has been recognized as an efficient method for obtaining asymmetric products. In this work we reported that using potassium thiazolidine-2-thione-4-carboxylate [(R)-TTCA (.) K] as the chiral catalyst, the addition reaction of cyclohexanone with acrylonitrile was carried out and optically active (S)-(+)-2-cyanoethyl cyclohexanone 1 ([alpha](D)(20) = +2.8degrees, e. e. 19%) and hydrolysis product of 1, (S)-(-)-2-oxocyclohexanepropionic acid 2 ([alpha](D)(20) = -2.95degrees, e. e. 19%), were obtained. Enantiomeric excess of compound 1 was determined by resolution of (R,S)-2-oxocyclohexanepropionic acid with (-)-quinine. Compounds 1 and 2 were easily racemized at a long time for laying aside and in the presence of dil H2SO4 or dil base. When (S)-(+)-2-cyanoethyl cyclohexanone reacts with ethylene glycol in the presence of toluene sulfonic acid as the catalyst the racemic 2-ethylendioxy cyclohexyl propionitrile was obtained. The mechanism of the reaction of cyclohexanone with acrylonitrile would be a complicated catalysis process.

Abstract:In this study, the kinetic characteristics of the bio-hydration of acrylonitrile by free cell catalysts were studied. Due to the aggregation phenomenon, free cell catalysts showed different characteristic when compared with free enzyme catalysts. The Michaelis constants were obtained through the homogeneous reaction. Both the values of Vm and Km increased with the increase in enzymatic activity, ranging from 100 to 500 U/mL, and the variation trend of Km was not consistent with the rule of enzyme-catalyzed reaction. To reduce the external diffusion resistance of acrylonitrile to free cells, a membrane dispersion micro reactor was used, and the conversion rates of acrylonitrile in the membrane dispersion micro-reactor under all of the experimental conditions reached approximately 90% of the max conversion rates. The reinforcement of the apparent reaction rate by the micro-reactor may have benefitted from the significant increase in the specific surface area of the acrylonitrile droplets and the adsorption of the free cell catalysts on the undissolved droplets. Abstract:The application of cyanoacetic acid as a catalyst for the Biginelli reaction and as an active methylene compound for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction was evaluated. Using cyanoacetic acid as a Bronsted acid catalyst, after a synthetic optimization process, it was possible to synthesize eight dihydropyrimidinones with good yields (80-99%) using ethanol as solvent. It is the first time, to our knowledge, that the use of cyanoacetic acid is reported in the synthesis of this class of compounds, which have a wide bioactive potential. Also, cyanoacetic acid was used as a reagent in the Knoevenagel condensation, through which polyfunctionalized olefins were obtained and can be used as building blocks for structurally complex molecules. By using KOH as catalyst, eleven Knoevenagel adducts were synthesized with good yields (65-97%), under microwave irradiation as heating source, in water. Moreover, Knoevenagel adducts containing halogenated substituents (F, Cl) showed potential larvicidal activity with lethal concentrations (LC50) of 19.63, 33.84 μg mL-1 and LC90 of 27.46 and 48.16 μg mL-1. This study showed the versatility of cyanoacetic acid as a catalyst for the synthesis of dihydropirimidinones, aldol compounds and presented the first study showing their larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti.

Abstract:Chiral phase-transfer catalysts (S)-1a, (S)-1b, and (S)-2 with conformationally fixed biphenyl cores were conveniently prepared from the known, easily available (S)-6,6'-dimethylbiphenyl-2,2'-diol 3 and (S)-4,5,6,4',5',6'-hexamethoxybiphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid 14, respectively, in five steps. The catalysts, (S)-1a and (S)-1b are readily applicable to asymmetric alkylation of N-(diphenylmethylene) glycine tert-butyl ester with excellent enantioselectivity. In particular, catalyst (S)-1b was found to exhibit the unique temperature effect on the enantioselectivity, and asymmetric alkylation of glycine derivatives at room temperature gave higher enantiomeric excess than that at 0 degrees C. In addition, the catalyst (S)-2 exhibited the high catalytic performance (0.01-1 mol %) in the asymmetric alkylation of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycine tert-butyl ester and N-(p-chlorophenylmethylene) alanine tert-butyl ester compared to the existing chiral phase-transfer catalysts, thereby allowing to realize a general and useful procedure for highly practical enantioselective synthesis of structurally diverse natural and unnatural alpha-alkyl-alpha-amino acids as well as alpha, alpha-dialkyl-alpha-amino acids. Abstract:The synthesis of asymmetric organic molecules has experienced a huge development over the last few decades. Phase‐transfer catalysis has been proven to be one of the most powerful methods for these asymmetric transformations. However, the study of the mechanism of these catalysts and the different interactions that they can establish with the reactants has failed to keep pace. In the present study, the conjugate cyanation of two different α,β‐unsaturated ketones are studied in the presence of a well‐known alkaloid quinine‐derived PTC, along with different modifications. The study includes the comparison of different binding modes between the catalysts and the different reactants, the mechanistic study of the reaction and the analysis of the non‐covalent interactions established within the complexes and their role in the global enantioselectivity of the process.

Abstract:Summary of main observation and conclusion A series of structurally novel multifunctional chiral aminophosphine catalysts were developed through a concise synthetic strategy from easily available starting materials. The highly enantioselective intermolecular cross Rauhut‐Currier reactions of vinyl ketones with 3‐acyl acrylates and 2‐ene‐1,4‐diones catalyzed by (S,S)‐5a were well realized, generating a wide range of the structurally important chiral multicabonyl products in good to excellent yields with high stereocontrol (up to 97% yield, 99% ee). Abstract:To enhance the bio-based synthesis of acrolein from glycerol, a hybrid approach combining in situ nonthermal plasma (NTP) with thermo-catalytic dehydration was employed. This study investigated the impact of the reaction temperature and NTP discharge field strength on glycerol conversion, acrolein selectivity, byproduct formation, and coke deposition using two catalysts of silicotungstic acid supported on mesoporous alumina and silica. The results revealed that, while the reaction temperature and NTP field strength exhibited complex interactions, the in situ application of NTP markedly improved both glycerol conversion and acrolein selectivity when optimized for specific temperature–NTP field strength combinations. Additionally, the reaction mechanisms of glycerol dehydration with the two catalysts, in the presence and absence of NTP, were systematically analyzed and discussed based on the experimental data.

Abstract:Two new Co(II) and Cu(II) coordination polymers, {Co(HL1)2(μ-L2)(H2O)2}n (1) and {[Cu(HL1)2(μ-L2)H2O]·H2O}n (2) (H2L1 = Phthalic acid and L2 = 2-aminopyrazine), have been synthesized by slow evaporation of solvent and characterized by IR spectroscopic, elemental, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. X-ray results indicate that in both the polymers, phthalate acts as a monodentate ligand and the aminopyrazine ligand is responsible for the formation of the infinite one-dimensional chain structure. The solid-state structures are stabilized through hydrogen bonds and N‒H···π interactions by generating two-dimensional layered structures. Finally, the non-covalent interactions have been studied energetically and using Bader’s theory of atoms in molecules by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The influence of the metal coordination on the strength of the interaction has been studied using molecular electrostatic potential surface calculations.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and olefins into acrylates has been a long standing target, because society attempts to synthesize commodity chemicals in a more economical and sustainable fashion. In this work, two alkylation reaction pathways were investigated to explore the role of methylene linkage (-CH2-) on the formation of alkyl acrylate from coupling of CO2 and ethylene, catalyzed by a nickel catalyst in the presence of different alkyl iodides. The energy barrier of Ni-O bond cleavage decreases with increasing methylene linkage of alkyl iodides, which may be due to NPA charge transfer of alkyl iodides. Meanwhile, the O1 (ester sp3 O atom) attack route leading to the formation of alkyl acrylate competes with the O2 (carboxylic sp2 O atom) attack route in terms of energy barriers. Further studies on the fluoro-substituted alkyl acrylates show that neither CF3I nor CF3CH2I is effective in releasing trifluoroalkyl acrylates from the nickellacycle, which explains why only negligible amounts of the desired product were detected in the experiment. In addition, we investigated the non-productive pathways leading to byproducts, such as propionic acid, propionates and ion pair complexes, etc. By comparing the results obtained with CH3I, the use of C2H5I as an electrophilic reagent may stabilize the non-productive intermediates. The methylene linkage has little effect on the main productive pathway. However, it has a significant influence on the side reactions, which is detrimental to the formation of alkyl acrylate in competing with the main productive pathway.

Investigating Interaction Dynamics of an Enantioselective Peptide Catalyzed Acylation Reaction

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a key method to investigate molecular recognition in biomacromolecules and to detect molecular motions on the µs to s timescale revealing transient conformational states. Changes in kinetics of interconversions between those states can be linked to binding, folding or catalytic events. Here, we investigated whether these methods allow detection of changes in the dynamics of a small, highly selective peptide catalyst during recognition of its enantiomeric substrates. The flexible tetrapeptide Boc-L-(π-Me)-His-AGly-L-Cha-L-Phe-OMe, used for the monoacetylation of cycloalkane-diols, is probed at natural abundance using carbon relaxation dispersion in the rotating frame (13C-R1ρ) and proton chemical exchange saturation transfer (1H-CEST). Indeed, we detected differences in dynamics of the peptide upon interaction with the diol. Importantly, these differ depending on the enantiomer of the substrate used providing insights into the recognition of the substrates. These enantiospecific influences of the substrates on the dynamics of the peptide catalyst revealed are rationalized using. computational techniques.
