Abstract:An investigation on the effect of heparin on leukocytes in vitro was conducted. We have demonstrated that heparin and other mucopolysaccharides destroyed leukocytes as judged by macromolecule leakage. The cytotoxicity of heparin was suppressed by protamine. A medium which mimics intracellular ionic conditions was found to suppress the cytotoxicity of heparin. Macromolecule leakage induced by heparin is thought to be facilitated by passive ion flux. Mepacrine, a phospholipase inhibitor, suppressed the heparin-induced macromolecule leakage from leukocytes. Thus, the activation of phospholipase appears to be involved in the cytotoxicity of heparin. These results suggest that activation of phospholipase and passive movement of ions may be important steps for the heparin-induced leukocyte lysis in vitro.
Long-term variation of tree growth and intrinsic water-use efficiency in Schrenk spruce with increasing CO2 concentration and climate warming in the western Tianshan Mountains, China

Abstract:We combined dendrochronological methods and interannual δ13C measurements to investigate radial growth and physiological responses of Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana) in response to rising atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) and changing climate in high-elevation forests in China’s western Tianshan Mountains. The mean maximum temperature in May to August, reconstructed from δ13C, revealed an overall warming trend, with persistent warm periods from 1910 to 1920, and from 1970 to 1980. Intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) increased by 28 % over the last 160 years; temporal trends in iWUE were calculated under three theoretical scenarios as a baseline for interpreting the observed gas-exchange at increasing Ca. Basal area increment (BAI) increased by 51.4 % since 1850 with two apparent increases and decreases. Trees exhibited sharp declines in BAI along with enhanced iWUE during the warmer periods; this was possibly due to a reduced stomatal conductance which prevented excessive water loss from trees. Conversely, BAI increased at reduced iWUE (−3.6 %, −7.4 %) during two cold-wet periods (e.g., 1880 to 1992, and 1945 to 1960), suggesting that a diminished water stress caused the observed growth pattern. However, BAI increased significantly (49.4 %) from 1965 to 1983 with constant intercellular atmospheric CO2 concentrations (Ci) response scenario under acute water limitations, indicating the CO2 stimulation of tree growth. These results showed that even at high elevations, increased iWUE may not lead to long-term enhancement of tree growth, and other factors may counteract CO2-fertilization effects, especially those related to a warming-induced drought. The results of this study suggest that the current models may overestimate the sink capacity of temperate forests, and indicate that multi-proxy records are needed to disentangle the role of a limiting factor in modulating the response of the Schrenk spruce forest to current climate change scenarios.

Abstract:Reports of allergic reactions to erythromycin are extremely rare, although this macrolide antibiotic discovered in 1952 has been widely used (1-3). Fisher (4) treated 60 patients with leg ulcers, a condition frequently associated with contact dermatitis, with a 5% erythromycin preparation in vaseline without adverse reaction or positive patch tests. The only published case of verified delayed sensitivity to erythromycin was reported by van Ketel (5). Other authors (6-9) have seen reactions attributed to erythromycin, but have not demonstrated delayed sensitivity. Our cas.e is a female aged 72, suffering from circulatory insufficiency in the lower limbs with recurrent bilateral ulcerations, complicated by eczema attributed to the use and abuse of various topical drugs. This patient is one of the three erythromycin-positive subjects in a group of 32 with leg ulcers and surrounding eczema included in a special allergological study by Marliani et al. (10). Patch tests carried out with the ICDRG standard series and a series of antibiotics, excipients and preservatives showed reactions to balsam of Peru, parabens, diaminodiphenylmethane and erythromycin sulphate 25% pet. (Proter S.P.A. Milan). 2 years later during a recurrence of the eczema, the tests were repeated with the same results, although the patient had stopped using topical erythromycin preparations (they were in fact no longer available in Italy). Thus topical administration of erythromycin, an antibiotic with a mild sensitizing capacity, is not completely free of the risk of sensitization. This situation leads us to question the advisability of topical antibiotic treatment of leg ulcers, because contact sensitivity may then make systemic administration of the drug inadvisable or even dangerous. Elevation-dependent variations of tree growth and intrinsic water-use efficiency in Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana) in the western Tianshan Mountains, China

Abstract:Rising atmospheric CO2 concentration (C a) is expected to accelerate tree growth by enhancing photosynthesis and increasing intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE). However, the extent of this effect on long-term iWUE and its interactions with climate remains unclear in trees along an elevation gradient. Therefore, we investigated the variation in the radial growth and iWUE of mature Picea schrenkiana trees located in the upper tree-line (A1: 2700 m a.s.l.), middle elevation (A2: 2400 m a.s.l.), and lower forest limit (A3: 2200 m a.s.l.), in relation to the rising C a and changing climate in the Wusun Mountains of northwestern China, based on the basal area increment (BAI) and tree-ring δ(13)C chronologies from 1960 to 2010. We used the CRU TS3.22 dataset to analyze the general response of tree growth to interannual variability of regional climate, and found that BAI and δ(13)C are less sensitive to climate at A1 than at A2 and A3. The temporal trends of iWUE were calculated under three theoretical scenarios, as a baseline for interpreting the observed gas exchange at increasing C a. We found that iWUE increased by 12-32% from A1 to A3 over the last 50 years, and showed an elevation-dependent variation in physiological response. The significant negative relationship between BAI and iWUE at A2 and A3 showed that tree growth has been decreasing despite long-term increases in iWUE. However, BAI remained largely stable throughout the study period despite the strongest iWUE increase [at constant intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) before 1980] at A1. Our results indicate a drought-induced limitation of tree growth response to rising CO2 at lower elevations, and no apparent change in tree growth and diminished iWUE improvement since 1980 in the upper tree-line. This study may contradict the expectation that combined effects of elevated C a and rising temperatures have increased forest productivity, especially in high-elevation forests.

Elevated CO2 did not affect the hydrological balance of a mature native Eucalyptus woodland

Abstract:Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCa ) might reduce forest water-use, due to decreased transpiration, following partial stomatal closure, thus enhancing water-use efficiency and productivity at low water availability. If evapotranspiration (Et ) is reduced, it may subsequently increase soil water storage (ΔS) or surface runoff (R) and drainage (Dg ), although these could be offset or even reversed by changes in vegetation structure, mainly increased leaf area index (L). To understand the effect of eCa in a water-limited ecosystem, we tested whether 2 years of eCa (~40% increase) affected the hydrological partitioning in a mature water-limited Eucalyptus woodland exposed to Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE). This timeframe allowed us to evaluate whether physiological effects of eCa reduced stand water-use irrespective of L, which was unaffected by eCa in this timeframe. We hypothesized that eCa would reduce tree-canopy transpiration (Etree ), but excess water from reduced Etree would be lost via increased soil evaporation and understory transpiration (Efloor ) with no increase in ΔS, R or Dg . We computed Et , ΔS, R and Dg from measurements of sapflow velocity, L, soil water content (θ), understory micrometeorology, throughfall and stemflow. We found that eCa did not affect Etree , Efloor , ΔS or θ at any depth (to 4.5 m) over the experimental period. We closed the water balance for dry seasons with no differences in the partitioning to R and Dg between Ca levels. Soil temperature and θ were the main drivers of Efloor while vapour pressure deficit-controlled Etree , though eCa did not significantly affect any of these relationships. Our results suggest that in the short-term, eCa does not significantly affect ecosystem water-use at this site. We conclude that water-savings under eCa mediated by either direct effects on plant transpiration or by indirect effects via changes in L or soil moisture availability are unlikely in water-limited mature eucalypt woodlands.
Increasing water-use efficiency mediates effects of atmospheric carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen on growth variability of central European conifers

Abstract:Climate controls forest biomass production through direct effects on cambial activity and indirectly through interactions with CO2, air pollution, and nutrient availability. The atmospheric concentration of CO2, sulfur and nitrogen deposition can also exert a significant indirect control on wood formation since these factors influence the stomatal regulation of transpiration and carbon uptake, that is, intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE). Here we provide 120-year long tree-ring time series of iWUE, stem growth, climatic and combined sulfur and nitrogen (SN) deposition trends for two common tree species, Pinus sylvestris (PISY) and Picea abies (PCAB), at their lower and upper distribution margins in Central Europe. The main goals were to explain iWUE trends using theoretical scenarios including climatic and SN deposition data, and to assess the contribution of climate and iWUE to the observed growth trends. Our results showed that after a notable increase in iWUE between the 1950s and 1980s, this positive trend subsequently slowed down. The substantial rise of iWUE since the 1950s resulted from a combination of an accelerated increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations (Ca) and a stable level of leaf intercellular CO2 (Ci). The offset of observed iWUE values above the trajectory of a constant Ci/Ca scenario was explained by trends in SN deposition (all sites) together with the variation of drought conditions (low-elevation sites only). Increasing iWUE over the 20th and 21st centuries improved tree growth at low-elevation drought-sensitive sites. In contrast, at high-elevation PCAB sites, growth was mainly stimulated by recent warming. We propose that SN pollution should be considered in order to explain the steep increase in iWUE of conifers in the 20th century throughout Central Europe and other regions with a significant SN deposition history.
Long-term effects of drought on tree-ring growth and carbon isotope variability in Scots pine in a dry environment

Abstract:Drought frequency is increasing in many parts of the world and may enhance tree decline and mortality. The underlying physiological mechanisms are poorly understood, however, particularly regarding chronic effects of long-term drought and the response to increasing temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). We combined analyses of radial growth and stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) in tree rings in a mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest over the 20th century to elucidate causes of tree mortality in one of the driest parts of the European Alps (Pfynwald, Switzerland). We further compared trees that have recently died with living trees in a 10-year irrigation experiment, where annual precipitation was doubled. We found a sustained growth increase and immediate depletion of δ13C values for irrigated trees, indicating higher stomatal conductance and thus indeed demonstrating that water is a key limiting factor for growth. Growth of the now-dead trees started declining in the mid-1980s, when both mean temperature and VPD increased strongly. But growth of these trees was reduced to some extent already several decades earlier, while intrinsic water-use efficiency derived from δ13C values was higher. This indicates a more conservative water-use strategy compared with surviving trees, possibly at the cost of low carbon uptake and long-term reduction of the needle mass. We observed reduced climatic sensitivity of raw tree-ring δ13C for the now-dead in contrast to surviving trees, indicating impaired stomatal regulation, although this difference between the tree groups was smaller after detrending the data. Higher autocorrelation and a lower inter-annual δ13C variability of the now-dead trees further indicates a strong dependence on (low) carbon reserves. We conclude that the recent increase in atmospheric moisture demand in combination with insufficient soil water supply was the main trigger for mortality of those trees that were weakened by long-term reduced carbon uptake.

Abstract:The degradation of permafrost caused by climate warming accelerates the infiltration and evaporation of water, destroys the hydrological system, and increases the drought stress of boreal forests. However, how climate warming and permafrost degradation affect intrinsic Water Use Efficiency (iWUE) and tree growth is not fully understood. Using tree-ring width and stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C) data, we analyzed the growth and iWUE of Larix gmelinii on slopes and gullies in three different permafrost degradation areas in Daxing'an Mountains, China. The results showed that the iWUE of L. gmelinii increased significantly in all areas from 1900 to 2015. Radial growth and the ratio of intercellular (Ci) and ambient (Ca) CO2 concentration was significantly negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) in severe degradation permafrost areas. Meanwhile, radial growth (basal area increment, BAI) has decreased significantly in recent 40 years, and the decline rate of radial growth in slope topographies was higher than that in gully topographies. Growing season temperature was generally positively correlated with iWUE, but negatively correlated with the radial growth of L. gmelinii. The increase of iWUE was negatively correlated with the radial growth of L. gmelinii. The response of BAI, iWUE, and Ci/Ca to temperature rise and water change was weak in the mild degradation area, and radial growth still increased. In severe and moderate degradation areas, tree physiology (iWUE and Ci/Ca) was driven by temperature and PDSI, indicating that L. gmelinii adopted a conservative water-saving stomatal strategy, and increasing iWUE did not promote tree growth. Although the water use efficiency of L. gmelinii in the southern edge of permafrost area increased with the increase in temperature, it may face more serious drought stress and growth decline in the future.

Abstract:Warming and increased CO2 levels are generally believed to enhance photosynthetic rates (A) and tree growth, especially in alpine treelines. However, this positive effect may be limited by moisture availability. Here we compare the radial growth and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of two widely-distributed evergreen needleleaf species, Tibetan juniper (Juniperus tibetica) and Balfour spruce (Picea balfouriana), at the same site near the treeline on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau using tree-ring width and dual isotopes (δ13C and δ18O). We observed that with a 70 ppm increase in atmospheric CO2 from 1954 to 2007, juniper radial growth was significantly stimulated, whereas spruce growth remained constant. Correlation analysis between tree-ring width and climate factors revealed that spruce was more moisture-sensitive than juniper. Although the increases in iWUE for juniper (22%) and spruce (26%) were similar, iWUE changes in spruce were more influenced by stomatal conductance (gs) rather than A, supporting that moisture availability inhibits spruce growth. Our study implies that predicting growth dynamics in alpine forests based on the growth-temperature relationship may be inadequate, as they are likely moisture-limited. It also suggests that increases in A may not be as widespread as previously thought, which helps improve forest productivity modeling.

Abstract:Global change, characterized by elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and warming, is profoundly affecting terrestrial forests. However, whether the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration has a fertilizer effect on tree growth and whether intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) promotes tree growth in semi‐arid regions is not entirely clear. In this study, we evaluated the relationships between tree‐ring widths, δ13C values and iWUE of Qinghai Spruce (Picea crassifolia Kom.) in the eastern Qilian Mountains, northwestern China. We found that the iWUE is significantly consistent with the δ13C of rings in the high‐frequency signal, and the relationship between iWUE and tree‐ring width is unstable. The first‐order difference correlation analysis with meteorological data showed that both the iWUE and tree‐ring width were drought‐limited. The radial growth was mainly regulated by water availability in current April and July, while annual variation of iWUE was primarily controlled by that in current July. In the early stage of trees growth, there was a positive relationship between iWUE and radial growth due to the CO2 fertilization. During the 1970s‐2000s, the effect of water availability in July on radial growth increases because of the decreased precipitation in July. This have decreased stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, carbon uptake, and growth, contributing to the negatively significant correlation between tree‐ring widths and iWUE (p

Abstract:Tree-level intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) is derived from the tree-ring 13C isotope composition (δ13C) and is an important indicator of the adaptability for trees to climate change. However, there is still uncertainty regarding the relationship between long-term forest ecosystem carbon sequestration capacity and iWUE. To determine whether elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) increase iWUE and tree growth (basal area increment, BAI), dendrochronological methods and stable isotope analyses were used to examine annual changes in the tree-ring width and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of Platycladus orientalis in northern China. The iWUE derived from δ13C has increased significantly (p < 0.01). Long-term iWUE trend was largely and positively driven by the elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature. We observed a general increase in averaged BAI, which had significant positive correlation with iWUE (R2 = 0.3186, p < 0.01). Increases in iWUE indeed translated into enhanced P. orientalis growth in semi-arid areas of northern China. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration significantly (p < 0.01) stimulated P. orientalis biomass accumulation when Ca was less than approximately 320 ppm in the early phase; however, this effect was not pronounced when Ca exceeded 320 ppm.

Abstract:Elevated CO2 level in the atmosphere is expected to improve the tree growth rates and intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE). Although current results inferring from tree rings found the tree growth decline in water-limited area, it is still unclear whether spruce trees in humid southwestern China benefit from the increasing CO2. In this study, tree-ring width data were used to investigate the tree radial growth rate of Chuanxi spruce (Picea likiangensis var. balfouriana). Moreover, combining with the tree-ring carbon isotope date, we analyzed the physiological responses of Chuanxi spruce to rising CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere (Ca) associated with climatic change in southwestern China. From 1851 to 2009, iWUE of Chuanxi spruce rose by approximately 30.4%, and the ratio of atmospheric CO2 to leaf intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) showed no significant trend in the study area. The result suggested that Chuanxi spruce used an active response strategy when Ca was significantly increased. iWUE showed a significant increasing trend in parallel with tree radial growth, indicating that the increasing iWUE resulted in an increase in radial growth. These results suggest that spruce forests in southwestern China have not shown declining trends under increasing Ca and climate change scenarios, in contrast to trees growing in water-limited areas. Therefore, spruce forests benefit from the increasing CO2 in the atmosphere in the humid areas of southwestern China.

Abstract:PurposeClimate change, particularly rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, can influence carbon (C) and nitrogen cycling (N) in different forest ecosystems. The major objective of this study was to quantify the long-term physiological and tree growth trends of Larix gmelinii plantation in a boreal environment of northern China in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and other climatic conditions.Materials and methodsTree rings were extracted from four Larix gmelinii sample trees, located in a boreal plantation forest of Mohe City, Heilongjiang Province, China. Tree rings were measured with a mean annual basal area increment (BAI), while tree ring stable C isotope composition (δ13C) and N isotopic composition (δ15N) as well as total C and N concentration were measured on mass spectrometer at 3-year intervals. Tree intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) was calculated using tree rings δ13C and atmospheric δ13C data. Multiple regression analysis was used to quantify the BAI and WUE relationships with atmospheric CO2 concentration, temperature, precipitation and humidity of the study site.Results and discussionThe results showed a quadratically decrease in relative humidity over the past 60 years with rising temperature, indicating the initial increasing water availability, which is peaked, but increasing water limitation thereafter. Tree iWUE continued to increase as atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) increased. Tree BAI showed a quadratic relationship with atmospheric CO2 (Ca), increasing initially, but peaking at the critical threshold of 352.5 ppm or in 1986, and decreasing with the Ca thereafter. Tree ring δ15N, an index of N availability, also responded non-linearly to the rising Ca, increasing initially with the Ca, but peaking at the critical Ca of 348–367 ppm and decreasing thereafter with the rising Ca, indicating the decreasing N availability in the last 20–30 years after the Ca continued to rise.ConclusionsThe iWUE of Larix gmelinii continued to increase under rising Ca, but this increased iWUE did not translate into tree growth consistently due to increasing water and N limitation in the boreal forest ecosystems under intensifying climate change in the last 20–30 years.

Abstract:Climate warming may induce growth decline in warm-temperate areas subjected to seasonal soil moisture deficit, whereas increasing atmospheric CO 2 concentration ( C a ) is expected to enhance tree growth. An accurate understanding of tree growth and physiological processes responding to climate warming and increasing C a is critical. Here, we analyzed tree-ring stable carbon isotope and wood anatomical traits of Pinus tabuliformis from Qinling Mountains in China to understand how lumen diameter (LD) determining potential hydraulic conductivity and cell-wall thickness (CWT) determining carbon storage responded to climate and C a . The effects of climate and C a on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) were isolated, and iWUE values due to only-climate (iWUE Clim ) and only-CO 2 effects (iWUE CO2 ) were obtained. During a low-iWUE period, the influences of climate on earlywood (EW) LD and latewood (LW) CWT prevailed. During a high-iWUE period, CO 2 fertilization promoted cell enlargement and carbon storage but this was counteracted by a negative influence of climate warming. The limiting direct effects of iWUE Clim and indirect effects of climate on EW LD were greater than on LW CWT. P. tabuliformis in temperate forests will face a decline of growth and carbon fixation, but will produce embolism-resistant tracheids with narrow lumen responding to future hotter droughts.

Abstract:In order to understand the impact of drought and intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) on tree growth, we evaluated the relative importance of direct and indirect effects of water availability on secondary growth and xylem anatomy of Juniperus thurifera, a Mediterranean anisohydric conifer. Dendrochronological techniques, quantitative xylem anatomy, and 13C/12C isotopic ratio were combined to develop standardized chronologies for iWUE, BAI (basal area increment), and anatomical variables on a 40-year-long annually resolved series for 20 trees. We tested the relationship between iWUE and secondary growth at short-term (annual) and long-term (decadal) temporal scales to evaluate whether gains in iWUE may lead to increases in secondary growth. We obtained a positive long-term correlation between iWUE and BAI, simultaneously with a negative short-term correlation between them. Furthermore, BAI and iWUE were correlated with anatomical traits related to carbon sink or storage (tracheid wall thickness and ray parenchyma amount), but no significant correlation with conductive traits (tracheid lumen) was found. Water availability during the growing season significantly modulated tree growth at the xylem level, where growth rates and wood anatomical traits were affected by June precipitation. Our results are consistent with a drought-induced limitation of tree growth response to rising CO2, despite the trend of rising iWUE being maintained. We also remark the usefulness of exploring this relationship at different temporal scales to fully understand the actual links between iWUE and secondary growth dynamics.

Abstract:NECROPSY EXAMINATION of the cardiac valves in illnesses of a chronic wasting character occasionally discloses the presence of sterile vegetations derived from fibrin and formed elements of the blood. The term most commonly applied to this condition is nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis. Before the report of Hultquist,l there had been only isolated accounts of the clinical effects produced by this lesion.z.3 Hultquist stressed the association of nonbacterial thrombotic cardiac vegetations with cancer and emphasized their significance in the causation of cerebral embolism. The present communication consists of a clinical and anatomic survey of cases of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis autopsied at the Montefiore Hospital during the years 1948 to 1958. The authors are primarily concerned with the cerebral symptomatology produced by this lesion. A general review of the history of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, a summary of the conflicting terminology, and a discussion of its nature and pathogenesis may be found in the paper of MacDonald and Robbins.'
Overestimated gains in water‐use efficiency by global forests

Abstract:Increases in terrestrial water use efficiency (WUE) have been reported in many studies, pointing to potential changes in physiological forcing of global carbon and hydrological cycles. However, gains in WUE are of uncertain magnitude over longer (i.e. >10 years) periods of time largely owing to difficulties in accounting for structural and physiological acclimation. 13C signatures (i.e., δ13C) of plant organic matter have long been used to estimate WUE at temporal scales ranging from days to centuries. Mesophyll conductance is a key uncertainty in estimated WUE owing to its influence on diffusion of CO2 to sites of carboxylation. Here we apply new knowledge of mesophyll conductance to 464 δ13C chronologies in tree‐rings of 143 species spanning global biomes. Adjusted for mesophyll conductance, gains in WUE during the 20th century (0.15 ppm y‐1) were considerably smaller than those estimated from conventional modelling (0.26 ppm y‐1). Across the globe, mean sensitivity of WUE to atmospheric CO2 was 0.15 ppm ppm‐1. Ratios of internal‐to‐atmospheric CO2 (on a mole fraction basis; ci/ca) in leaves were mostly constant over time but differed among biomes and plant taxa – highlighting the significance of both plant structure and physiology. Together with synchronized responses in stomatal and mesophyll conductance, our results suggest that ratios of chloroplastic‐to‐atmospheric CO2 (cc/ca) are constrained over time. We conclude that forest WUE may have not increased as much as previously suggested and that projections of future climate forcing via CO2 fertilization may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Abstract:Worldwide tree species have been observed to be suffering from extended periods of water limitation, for example due to warmer climate that increases soil evaporation and plant transpiration. These conditions likely do not only affect the growth and vitality of trees but may also feed back on the cycling of carbon and nitrogen at the interface between roots and soils.In September 2019, we established a mesocosm experiment to mechanistically study on a seasonal basis how the interactions between plants and soil biotic and abiotic resources are altered during events of drought. The mesocosms feature young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees and soil collected from a drought-affected natural forest in the Rhone valley, Switzerland; and are treated with three different levels of water availability (control, sufficient water; intermediate drought, 40% reduction; severe drought, 75% reduction). One year after the start of the experiment an isotopic labelling campaign with 13CO2 was conducted to trace the natural pathway of photosynthetic assimilates into above- and belowground carbon pools and fluxes.During the first growing season of the experiment, severe drought more than doubled the growth of fine roots when compared to the control treatment. In turn, the mean diameter of the fine roots significantly decreased by 22%, and fewer ectomycorrhizal root tips were observed. These findings suggest that trees exposed to drought invest more in within-plant carbon maintenance and in the growth of root systems, rather than in the allocation of carbon to sustain the biology in the rhizosphere for nutrient acquisition.&#160;Moreover, post-label soil pore 13CO2 concentrations and total soil CO2 concentrations were lower under severe drought compared to intermediate and control treatments, indicating a generally reduced carbon metabolism. By tracking the fate of 13C assimilates into fine roots, soils and microbial communities over time we now investigate whether there is a threshold at which Scots pine trees stop investing in providing carbon to the rhizosphere and rather succumb to drought.
