Abstract:The theoretical analysis of hybrid surface wave propagation at chiral-plasma planar interface is presented in this manuscript. The dispersion relation is obtained for the proposed structure by applying boundary conditions at the chiral-plasma interface. The characteristic of hybrid surface wave can be tuned by changing the plasma frequency, plasma collisional frequency, and chirality parameter. It is shown that phase constant, attenuation or propagation loss and propagation length are dependent on plasma and chiral parameters. The effect of plasma frequency, plasma collisional frequency, and chirality parameter on the normalized phase constant, attenuation constant, and propagation length are presented computationally. Moreover, to verify the surface wave's condition normalized filed distribution is also presented. The present work may have potential applications in chiral and plasma-sensing based waveguide and enantiomeric sensing devices.

Abstract:In this work, the analytic representation of two-dimensional dyadic Green's function of a perfectly conducting cylinder coated with one-layered chiral medium is successfully derived and and explained in terms of the normalized cylindrical vector wave functions. Abstract:This work concentrates on a TM-polarisation plane wave scattered by various multiple strip-loaded cylindrical chiral objects. The two-dimensional electric dyadic Green's functions in multi-layered cylindrical chiral media are derived according to the scattering superposition principle. Then the direct singular integral equation has been formulated for describing the electric current distributions on the multiple strips. Numerical investigations has been performed to demonstrate the far-zone field characteristics with the changing of geometrical dimensions and constitutive parameters of strip loaded cylindrical chiral objects.

Abstract:Since the initial discovery of Dyakonov surface waves at a flat infinite interface of two dielectrics, at least one of which is positively anisotropic , extensive research has been conducted towards their theoretical and experimental studies in materials with positive anisotropy. The potential applications of these waves were initially limited due to the stringent conditions for their existence and the requirement for position anisotropy. In our study, we present the theoretical prediction and experimental observation of a novel type of Dyakonov surface waves that propagate along the flat strip of the interface between two dielectrics with negative anisotropy . We demonstrate that the conditions for surface waves are satisfied for negatively anisotropic dielectrics owing to the specific boundaries of the strip waveguide confined between two metallic plates. We study such modes theoretically by using the perturbation theory in the approximation of weak anisotropy and demonstrate that the electromagnetic field distribution in these modes is chiral. Experimental verification of theoretical predictions is made in the microwave range using 3D-printed negatively anisotropic water-dielectric metamaterial slabs. The existence of Dyakonov surface waves in negative crystals prompts a reassessment of the list of materials suitable for practical realization of these waves in the visible and infrared ranges. Due to the ability of the considered modes to transmit chiral light, they have potential in the sensing of chiral organic molecules.

Abstract:Surface waves, named here as Dyakonov-Tamm waves, can exist at the planar interface of an isotropic dielectric material and a chiral sculptured thin film (STF). Due to the periodic nonhomogeneity of a chiral STF, the range of the refractive index of the isotropic material is smaller but the range of the propagation direction in the interface plane is much larger, in comparison to those for the existence of Dyakonov waves at the planar interface of an isotropic dielectric material and a columnar thin film.

Abstract:The propagation of electromagnetic surface waves guided by the planar interface of two isotropic chiral materials, namely materials $\calA$ and $\calB$, was investigated by numerically solving the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Isotropic chiral material $\calB$ was modeled as a homogenized composite material, arising from the homogenization of an isotropic chiral component material and an isotropic achiral, nonmagnetic, component material characterized by the relative permittivity $\eps_a^\calB$. Changes in the nature of the surface waves were explored as the volume fraction $f_a^\calB$ of the achiral component material varied. Surface waves are supported only for certain ranges of $f_a^\calB$; within these ranges only one surface wave, characterized by its relative wavenumber $q$, is supported at each value of $f_a^\calB$. For $\mbox{Re} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric > 0 $, as $\left| \mbox{Im} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric \right|$ increases surface waves are supported for larger ranges of $f_a^\calB$ and $\left| \mbox{Im} \lec q \ric \right|$ for these surface waves increases. For $\mbox{Re} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric < 0 $, as $ \mbox{Im} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric $ increases the ranges of $f_a^\calB$ that support surface-wave propagation are almost unchanged but $ \mbox{Im} \lec q \ric $ for these surface waves decreases. The surface waves supported when $\mbox{Re} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric < 0 $ may be regarded as akin to surface-plasmon-polariton waves, but those supported for when $\mbox{Re} \lec \eps_a^\calB \ric > 0 $ may not.

Abstract:The planar interface of an isotropic homogeneous metal and an ambichiral dielectric material can guide surface-plasmon-polariton waves. The planar interface of an isotropic, homogeneous dielectric material and an ambichiral dielectric material can guide Dyakonov-Tamm waves. In either instance, we found that, as the ambichiral partnering material evolves into a finely chiral material, the solutions of the dispersion equation for surface-wave propagation evince convergence. The convergence is faster for the surface waves with larger phase speeds than for the surface waves with smaller phase speeds.

Abstract:The planar interface of an ordinary, isotropic, homogeneous, dielectric material and a hyperbolic, dielectric, structurally chiral material can support the propagation of one or multiple Dyakonov-Tamm waves, at a specified frequency and along a specified direction in the interface plane. When multiple Dyakonov-Tamm waves can exist, they differ in phase speed, propagation length, degree of localization to the interface, and spatial profiles of the associated electromagnetic fields. Dependence on the relative permittivity scalar of the isotropic partnering material suggests exploitation for optical sensing of analytes.

Abstract:This manuscript presents a theoretical analysis of hybrid surface wave propagation at the ferrite–anisotropic plasma planar interface. Maxwell’s equations in differential forms and impedance boundary conditions are used to solve the problem. The influence of the plasma frequency, cyclotron frequency, and the different permittivities of ferrite films on the dispersion curve are analyzed. Moreover, the propagation length, normalized phase speed, and normalized field distribution are also analyzed. The presented work may have potential applications in surface waveguide control, optical sensing, and wave propagation in the terahertz frequency range such as measurement of electron bunches, remote sensing, material characterization, medical and biological imaging.

Abstract:A surface electromagnetic wave called the Dyakonov-Tamm wave has been theoretically predicted to exist at the interface of two dielectric materials at least one of which is both anisotropic and periodically nonhomogeneous. For experimental confirmation, a prism-coupled configuration was used to excite the Dyakonov-Tamm wave guided by the interface of a dense thin film of magnesium fluoride and a chiral sculptured thin film of zinc selenide. The excitation was indicated by a reflection dip (with respect to the angle of incidence in the prism-coupled configuration) that is independent of the polarization state of the incident light as well as the thicknesses of both partnering materials beyond some thresholds. Applications to optical sensing and long-range on-chip communication are expected.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we have developed a model for a graphene-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide surrounded by uniaxial chiral and plasma layers. Electromagnetic wave theory is utilized to solve numerical problems. Graphene conductivity is modeled physically using the Kubo formula, described in the "Methodology" section. The characteristic equation is obtained by applying boundary conditions at . Based on numerical calculations, we examine the impact of chemical potential, number of graphene layers, plasma frequency, collisional frequency, and chirality on normalized propagation constants. Furthermore, the cutoff frequency for two different cases of the uniaxial chiral medium used for the different values of graphene and plasma parameters is revealed. The numerical results reflect that the presented study can be used to fabricate modulator plasmonic devices ranging from sensing and imaging to communication in the terahertz frequency regime.

Efficiency of dynamos from an autonomous generation of chiral asymmetry

Abstract:At high energies, the dynamics of a plasma with charged fermions can be described in terms of chiral magnetohydrodynamics. Using direct numerical simulations, we demonstrate that chiral magnetic waves (CMWs) can produce a chiral asymmetry $\mu_5 = \mu_\mathrm{L} - \mu_\mathrm{R}$ from a spatially fluctuating (inhomogeneous) chemical potential $\mu = \mu_\mathrm{L} + \mu_\mathrm{R}$, where $\mu_\mathrm{L}$ and $\mu_\mathrm{R}$ are the chemical potentials of left- and right-handed electrically charged fermions, respectively. If the frequency of the CMW is less than or comparable to the characteristic growth rate of the chiral dynamo instability, the magnetic field can be amplified on small spatial scales. The growth rate of this small-scale chiral dynamo instability is determined by the spatial maximum value of $\mu_5$ fluctuations. Therefore, the magnetic field amplification occurs during periods when $\mu_5$ reaches temporal maxima during the CMW. If the small-scale chiral dynamo instability leads to a magnetic field strength that exceeds a critical value, which depends on the resistivity and the initial value of $\mu$, magnetically dominated turbulence is produced. Turbulence gives rise to a large-scale dynamo instability, which we find to be caused by the magnetic alpha effect. Our results have consequences for the dynamics of certain high-energy plasmas, such as the early Universe.

Abstract:Plane wave propagation in chiral plasma and chiral ferrite media is studied in kDB coordinate system. General wave equations and characteristic equations of plane waves propagating along an arbitrary direction in chiral plasma and in chiral ferrites are derived in simple formulations respectively. Four wavenumbers and their corresponding dispersion characteristics are resulted for propagation both along and normal to the biasing magnetic field. When plane wave with negative helicity propagates along the biasing magnetic field in chiral ferrites, backward waves emerge. However backward waves occur with both positive and negative helicities when propagating along the biasing magnetic field in chiral plasma.

Abstract:We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a chiral fluid, where the molecules are described by a simplified version of the Kuhn coupled oscillator model. The eigenmodes of Maxwell's equations are circularly polarized waves. The application of a static magnetic field further leads to a magnetochiral term in the index of refraction of the fluid, which is independent of the wave polarization. A similar result holds when absorption is taken into account. Interference experiments and photochemical reactions have recently demonstrated the existence of the magnetochiral term. The comparison with Faraday rotation in an achiral fluid emphasizes the different symmetry properties of the two effects.

Abstract:Plasmonic-based devices attracted considerable attention in the scientific community. However, noble metals provide less tunability to control the electromagnetic (EM) surface wave. Therefore, it is imperative to design dynamically tunable plasmonic devices. In this manuscript, a theoretical model is developed for a graphene-filled waveguide surrounded by uniaxial chiral material (UACM). The complex conductivity of graphene is modeled with the help of the eminent Kubo formula. By applying boundary conditions at the interface, the characteristic equation is derived to investigate the behavior of the normalized propagation constant for the proposed waveguide. The variation in normalized propagation constant under the different parameters of graphene such as chemical potential, relaxation time, number of layers as well as values of chirality for different cases of UACM, i.e., > 0, > 0, < 0, < 0 and < 0, 0 is analyzed in the THz frequency range. This study reveals that the normalized propagation constant is very sensitive when both longitudinal and transverse components of permittivity exhibit a negative sign ( < 0, < 0) as compared to the other two cases. It is observed that all three types of UACM have different cutoff frequency ranges. Field profile of UACM such as and also studied to confirm the existence of SPP. The present work holds promising potential to offer a new platform graphene-UACM-based plasmonic devices that can be utilized to fabricate waveguides that are dynamically tunable in different THz frequency regions.

Generation of Optical Chirality Patterns with Plane Waves, Evanescent Waves and Surface Plasmon Waves

Abstract:We systematically investigate the generation of optical chirality patterns by applying the superposition of two waves in three scenarios, namely plane waves in free space, evanescent waves of totally reflected light at dielectric interface and propagating surface plasmon waves on a metallic surface. In each scenario, the general analytical solution of the optical chirality pattern is derived for different polarization states and propagating directions of the two waves. The analytical solutions are verified by numerical simulations. Spatially structured optical chirality patterns can be generated in all scenarios if the incident polarization states and propagation directions are correctly chosen. Optical chirality enhancement can be obtained from the constructive interference of free-space circularly polarized light or enhanced evanescent waves of totally reflected light. Surface plasmon waves do not provide enhanced optical chirality unless the near-field intensity enhancement is sufficiently high. The structured optical chirality patterns may find applications in chirality sorting, chiral imaging and circular dichroism spectroscopy.

Abstract:The propagation of Dyakonov surface waves guided by the planar interface of (i) an isotropic dielectric material and (ii) a homogenized uniaxial dielectric composite material comprising both passive and active component materials was theoretically investigated, under the assumption that the optic axis of the uniaxial partnering material lies wholly in the interface plane. For a certain range of the volume fraction of the active component material, the uniaxial partnering material is neither wholly dissipative nor wholly active and the Dyakonov surface waves propagating in certain directions amplify but the Dyakonov surface waves propagating in other directions attenuate.

Abstract:The wave properties for two-dimensional (2D) Yukawa liquids and solids have been investigated using Equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) technique for the first time. In present work, the longitudinal current correlation (LCC) $\mathrm{C}_{L}(k, t)$ and the transverse current correlation (TCC) $\mathrm{C}_{T}(k, t)$ functions have been computed for plasma parameters of Debye screening strength $\kappa$ and the Coulomb coupling parameter $\Gamma$ and explain the oscillation, frequency and damping behavior of the waves. New simulations provide the modes of wave propagation in 2D Yukawa liquids and solids with series of increasing frequency ( $\omega$ ) and decreasing frequency ( $\omega$ ) at different combinations of plasmas parameters ( $\kappa, \Gamma$ ). The obtained results from present simulations for 2D dusty plasma liquids and solids have been compared and discussed with previous known results from simulation and theoretical calculations, by using different numerical methods.

Abstract:The process of propagation of cylindrical and spherical ion acoustic solitary waves in an electron, positron, and ion plasma system is studied. The electrons are considered to have the generalized (r; q) distribution, while the positrons are supposed to have the kappa distribution, also known as the Lorentzian distribution. The classic nonlinear equation, Korteweg de-Vries (KdV), has been numerically solved by employing appropriate mathematical transformations. The role of various plasma parameters and nonplanar geometry on the widths and amplitudes of nonlinear ion acoustic structures has been numerically investigated. The current study could be helpful to understand the significance of cylindrical and spherical solitary waves in astrophysical as well as in space plasmas.
