Abstract:Water scarcity has become an increasingly complex challenge with the growth of the global population, economic expansion, and climate change, highlighting the demand for advanced water treatment technologies that can provide clean water in a scalable, reliable, affordable, and sustainable manner. Recent advancements on 2D nanomaterials (2DM) open a new pathway for addressing the grand challenge of water treatment owing to their unique structures and superior properties. Emerging 2D nanostructures such as graphene, MoS2, MXene, h-BN, g-C3N4, and black phosphorus have demonstrated an unprecedented surface-to-volume ratio, which promises ultralow material use, ultrafast processing time, and ultrahigh treatment efficiency for water cleaning/monitoring. In this review, we provide a state-of-the-art account on engineered 2D nanomaterials and their applications in emerging water technologies, involving separation, adsorption, photocatalysis, and pollutant detection. The fundamental design strategies of 2DM are discussed with emphasis on their physicochemical properties, underlying mechanism and targeted applications in different scenarios. This review concludes with a perspective on the pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in 2DM-enabled wastewater treatment and water-quality monitoring. This review can help to elaborate the structure-processing-property relationship of 2DM, and aims to guide the design of next-generation 2DM systems for the development of selective, multifunctional, programmable, and even intelligent water technologies. The global significance of clean water for future generations sheds new light and much inspiration in this rising field to enhance the efficiency and affordability of water treatment and secure a global water supply in a growing portion of the world.

Abstract:Despite approximately 70 % of the earth being covered by water, water shortage has emerged as an urgent social challenge. Sorbent-based atmospheric water harvesting stands out as a potent approach to alleviate the situation, particularly in arid regions. This method requires adsorbents with ample working capacity, rapid kinetics, low energy costs, and long-term stability under operating conditions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a novel class of crystalline porous materials and offer distinct advantages due to their high specific surface area, structural diversity, and robustness. These properties enable the rational design and customization of their water-harvesting capabilities. Herein, the basic concepts about the water sorption process within COFs, including the parameters that qualitatively or quantitatively describe their water isotherms and the mechanism are summarized. Then, the recent methods used to prepare COFs-based water harvesters are reviewed, emphasizing the structural diversity of COFs and presenting the common empirical understandings of these endeavors. Finally, challenges and research concepts are proposed to help develop next-generation COFs-based water harvesters. This concept article illustrates the basic parameters that describe the water isotherm of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and the underlying mechanism. The recent progress of utilizing COFs to collect water from the air and their structural characteristics are summed up. Abstract:Potable water and energy shortage have become global issues. With the limited water adsorption performance and regeneration conditions of traditional water adsorbents, innovation in water adsorbents have significant practical implications. Due to the abundant verities of adsorption sites and adjustable pore structures, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising water adsorbents with tailorable regeneration conditions, controllable absorption humidity range, and superior water capacity. Herein, the adsorption mechanism and strategies for water uptake MOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent advances of MOFs focused on atmospheric water harvesting, indoor humidity control, adsorption-driven heat pump, and industrial chemicals dehydration are reviewed, accompanied by an evolving prospect and possible challenges for the application implementation.

Abstract:As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure‐performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight of creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes the simultaneous addressing of the water shortage and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. The concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on MOFs for the excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro‐ and meso‐porous materials. The water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stabilit, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge. Understanding the Characteristics of Water Adsorption in Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Derived Porous Carbon Materials

Abstract:Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived porous carbons are a new subclass of N-doped porous carbon materials showing great potential for many applications. However, water vapor is present in various industrial applications, and previous studies have tended to neglect water adsorption on ZIF-derived porous carbons. In this study, ZIF-8-derived porous carbon materials exhibiting different surface chemistry and pore structure have been prepared, and used to characterize the behavior of water adsorption. Investigations suggest that water uptake at P/P-0 < 0.2 is positively correlated with the N content, and that pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species make the dominant contribution to this water uptake. Strong polarization of surface structure occurs in pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species, which provides strong electrostatic interactions between these species and water, leading to an increase in the low-pressure adsorption capacity. As the pressure is increased, the water adsorption process becomes highly dependent upon the porous structure, and there is a critical pore width above which pore-filling occurs. Our results indicate that water uptake at P/P-0 = 0.6, 0.8, and 0.9 is indeed directly proportional to cumulative pore volume with pore widths of the 12, 22 and 40 angstrom, respectively. Thus, the small micropores of < 12 angstrom are filled first at P/P-0 < 0.6, followed by the larger micropores of 12-22 angstrom at 0.6 < P/ P-0 < 0.8, and finally the mesopores of 22-40 angstrom at 0.8 < P/P-0 < 0.9. The results presented in this work should be useful for the selection and construction of ZIF-derived porous carbon materials for applications where water is involved.

Abstract:The development of stable physisorbents for water adsorption-related applications has attracted considerable attention owing to the demands of efficient water vapor capture in industrial production and processes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which feature high porosity and tunable porous structures and topologies, show promise as efficient water adsorbents and may afford significant energy savings in applications such as atmospheric water harvesting, adsorptive heat transformation, autonomous indoor humidity control, and desiccation of natural gases. This review focuses on recent progress in the development of MOF materials for water adsorption-related applications, covering the rational design and synthesis of MOFs with improved water adsorption performance via reticular chemistry. In particular, we highlight some of the latest advances in MOFs used in water adsorption application devices. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future directions for this emerging field, encompassing chemistry and material science, process engineering, and potential commercialization for MOF-based water adsorption devices.

Abstract:Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) that extact water from air is adorable technology which can release water stress in arid regions decentralized, however right now the high energy consumption hinders its development especially in low humidity condition. Improving humidity by adsorbing water through porous materials is an effective way to reduce AWH energy consumption. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a representative of new designable porous materials, is expected to solve the energy consumption problem in the practical application process of AWH. This review elucidates the energy-saving effects and design objectives of MOFs and COFs by analyzing the impact of adsorbents on energy consumption. Additionally, the manuscript delves into the principles of water adsorption in MOFs and COFs, subsequently reviewing the design methods for materials optimized for AWH performance. Lastly, the manuscript outlines the primary challenges and development recommendations for future energy-saving AWH solutions in arid regions.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as popular nanomaterials have outstanding application prospects in water sorption applications due to their unique structures with excellent properties, such as high porosity, large specific surface area, nanoscale features, reticulation structure, and controllable adjustment of the pore size. Sorbents require high water sorption and water stability to collect, utilize, or remove water. The structure of most MOFs is destroyed upon contact with water, which greatly limits their practical application. This paper summarizes the internal mechanism of water-stable MOFs and describes the optimal design strategy of water-stabilized MOFs based on the structural design of water-stabilized MOFs and the modification of existing MOFs. This review summarizes and analyzes the current typical MOF synthesis and preparation methods. Solutions are proposed for the problems of MOFs in terms of the synthesis mechanism, mass production, and application, and the manufacturing strategies and long-term reliability of MOFs are also prospected. The water sorption mechanism of water-stable MOFs and the influencing factors of water sorption behavior are described, and the optimization strategy of the water sorption performance of MOFs is proposed in terms of the microstructure, surface functional groups, and electron group hybridization. Meanwhile, the current challenges are summarized according to the characteristics of water-adsorbing MOFs, and the future development of MOFs are prospected. It is expected to provide a valuable reference for the research direction of the application of MOFs in water sorption.

Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks As Tailor-Made Scaffolds for Water Harvesting

Abstract:Developing materials to harvest water from the air is of great importance to alleviate the water shortage for people living in arid regions, where the annual average relative humidity (RH) is lower than 0.4. In this work, we report a general nitrogen atom incorporation strategy to prepare high-performance covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for water harvesting from the air in arid areas. A series of COFs, namely COF-W1, COF-W2, and COF-W3 were developed for this purpose. Different contents of nitrogen were embedded into COFs by incorporating pyridine units into the building blocks. With the increasing content of nitrogen from COF-W1 to COF-W3, the inflection points of their water isotherms shift distinctly from RH values from 0.65 to 0.25. Significantly, COF-W3 exhibits the lowest inflection point at a low RH value of 0.25 and reaches a high uptake capacity of 0.28 g g-1 at 25 degrees C with a low hysteresis loop. Moreover, the gram-scale COF-W3 retains its high performance, which renders it more attractive in water harvesting. This work demonstrates the feasibility of this nitrogen incorporation strategy to acquire high-performance COFs as water harvesters in the future. Water harvesting from the air: three covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized by incorporating different content of nitrogen. Higher nitrogen content is advantageous to lower their inflection points in water isotherms. The high performance of these COFs validated the feasibility of harnessing this strategy to prepare efficient COFs-based water harvesters.image

Abstract:The increasingly limited availability of fresh water has become one of the most prominent challenges of our time, and therefore, producing clean water from unconventional sources is of urgent importance. Water harvesting, a process that utilizes changes in the pressure and temperature to capture atmospheric water, has recently drawn considerable attention. In this study, by employing state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations, a large-scale study of ∼12,000 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) included in the Computational-Ready Experimental (CoRE) MOF database is conducted for their potential in water harvesting. The outcomes herein identify hundreds of promising adsorbents that can deliver a greater amount of fresh water per adsorption–desorption cycle than current state-of-the-art adsorbents. Analyses on such large amounts of computational data have also shed light on the structure–property relationships. Overall, the results obtained herein offer significant insights into the future development of MOFs as water adsorbents to harvest atmospheric water.

Abstract:Membrane-based separation is an essential part of water purification, however, traditional polymeric membranes suffer from a trade-off limitation between selectivity and permeability. In recent years, owing to high porosity and adjustable pore structure, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic framework (COFs), and zeolites exhibit promising potential in the separation membranes to break the trade-off law. In this comprehensive review, we endeavour to present the state-of-art progress on 2D MOFs , COFs and zeolites nanosheets as ideal candidates for membrane separations with a particular emphasis on the water-related applications. Recent researches on the typical fabrication methods for the above 2D porous nanosheets are summarized. The assembling strategies into pure 2D porous membranes involve in-situ growth and layer stacking assembly, while 2D MMMs normally employ phase-inversion or interfacial polymerization methods. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to introduce the latest advances on these novel membranes for water-related separation processes, including desalination, heavy metals removal, oil/water separation, dyes, pharmaceutical and agricultural pollutants separations. Finally, challenges and future perspective for the industrial implementation of these membranes are pointed out. This review is expected to provide an insight view for the production and applications of highly efficient 2D porous membranes in water-related separations.

Abstract:Previous research on water harvesting driven by directional water transport from ubiquitous atmospheric moisture is mainly based on one-dimensional (1D) filaments with asymmetric hydrophilic/hydrophobic wettability along the filaments, two-dimensional (2D) surfaces with hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns, and three-dimensional (3D) porous structures with “Janus” wettability from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. However, it remains an ongoing challenge to design and construct porous fibrous membranes with efficient directional water transport capability in the thickness direction and excellent water-collection performance. Herein, a sandwich-structured nanofibrous membrane showing unusual dual-directional wicking capability has been developed for water harvesting. In comparison to the Janus membrane with a water-collection efficiency of 45.92 g/cm2/h, such a dual-directional wicking fibrous membrane has a much higher water-collection capacity (425.96 g/cm2/h) and excellent water-storage capacity. The highly efficient water-harvesting capacity originates from the strong force to draw water from the outer hydrophobic layer to the middle superhydrophilic layer and the permeable channels formed by the hydrophobic fibrous structures. The large pores in the outer hydrophobic layer and the small pores in the middle superhydrophilic layer facilitate water harvesting because of the dual-directional water-transport ability. The successful preparation of dual-directional wicking nanofiber membranes would be valuable for the development of advanced water harvesters for diversified applications.

Abstract:Liquids under confinement differ in behavior from their bulk counterparts and can acquire properties that are specific to the confined phase and linked to the nature and structure of the host matrix. While confined liquid water is not a new topic of research, the past few years have seen a series of intriguing novel features for water inside nanoscale pores. These unusual properties arise from the very specific nature of nanoporous materials: termed "soft porous crystals", they combine large-scale flexibility with a heterogeneous internal surface. This creates a rich diversity of behavior for the adsorbed water, and the combination of different experimental characterization techniques along with computational chemistry at various scales is necessary to understand the phenomena observed, and their microscopic origins. The range of systems of interest span the whole chemical range, from the inorganic (zeolites, imogolites) to the organic (microporous carbons, graphene and its derivatives) and even encompass the hybrid organic--inorganic systems (such as metal--organic frameworks).

Abstract:Several metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), porous crystalline materials, exhibit a steep water uptake and release over a small window of vapor pressure or temperature. These are superior sorbents for open (humidity control, water harvesting), and closed applications (adsorption‐based heating or cooling). Their easy regeneration at moderate temperatures using "waste" heat or renewable energy like solar heating eliminates primary energy consumption. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are superior sorbents for water adsorption‐based applications. The unique step‐like water isotherm at a MOF‐specific relative pressure allows easy loading and regeneration over a small range of temperature and pressure conditions. With good hydrothermal stability and cyclic durability, it stands out over classical sorbents used in applications for humidity control, water harvesting, and adsorption‐based heating and cooling. These are easily regenerated at moderate temperatures using "waste" heat or solar heating. The isotherm thermodynamics and adsorption mechanisms are described, and the presence of MOFs in the water–air system is explained. Based on six selection criteria ≈40 reported MOFs and one COF are identified for potential application. Trends and approaches in further synthesis optimization and production scale‐up are highlighted. No‐MOF‐fits‐all, each MOF has its own specific step location matching only with a certain application type. Most applications are technically feasible and demonstrated on the bench‐scale or small pilot. Their maturity is benchmarked by their technology readiness level. Retrofitting existing applications with MOFs replacing classical desiccants may lead to rapid demonstration. Studies on techno‐economic analysis and life cycle analysis are required for a rational evaluation of the feasibility of promising applications.

Preparation and characterization of hierarchically porous hybrid gels for efficient dye adsorption

Abstract:Water treatment faces significant challenges due to the increasing complexity of pollutants and the need for more efficient, sustainable treatment methods. However, current adsorbent materials often struggle with issues such as low adsorption capacity, slow kinetics, and poor reusability, limiting their practical application. In this study, we developed a novel hierarchical porous hybrid gel (HPHG) for water treatment to address the limitations of conventional adsorbents. The HPHG features a multi-level porous structure (from 48 ± 28 nm to 4385 ± 823 nm) that significantly enhances its porosity and specific surface area. We systematically investigated the relationship between the material's structure and its adsorption performance. Kinetic studies revealed a tendency towards a pseudo-second-order adsorption model, attributed to the material's unique structural features that facilitate rapid mass exchange channels inside HPHG and provide abundant active sites for pollutant adsorption. Reusability tests demonstrated that the material retained 85.4% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles, highlighting its potential for practical applications. This study provides valuable insights into structure-performance relationships in advanced water treatment materials, offering a promising approach for designing next-generation adsorbents with superior efficiency and sustainability.

Abstract:The potential applications for atmospheric water harvesting are tantalizing. This review provides an up‐to‐date summary of the most recent developments and challenges for developing practical sorption‐based atmospheric‐water harvesters. The sorbent design at the nanoscale, condensation enhancement at the mesoscale, device development at the macroscale, and water scarcity assessments at the global scale are discussed in detail. Harvesting water from air in sorption‐based devices is a promising solution to decentralized water production, aiming for providing potable water anywhere, anytime. This technology involves a series of coupled processes occurring at distinct length scales, ranging from nanometer to meter and even larger, including water sorption/desorption at the nanoscale, condensation at the mesoscale, device development at the macroscale and water scarcity assessment at the global scale. Comprehensive understanding and bespoke designs at every scale are thus needed to improve the water‐harvesting performance. For this purpose, a brief introduction of the global water crisis and its key characteristics is provided to clarify the impact potential and design criteria of water harvesters. Next the latest molecular‐level optimizations of sorbents for efficient moisture capture and release are discussed. Then, novel microstructuring of surfaces to enhance dropwise condensation, which is favorable for atmospheric water generation, is shown. After that, system‐level optimizations of sorbent‐assisted water harvesters to achieve high‐yield, energy‐efficient, and low‐cost water harvesting are highlighted. Finally, future directions toward practical sorption‐based atmospheric water harvesting are outlined.

Abstract:Water pollution is a growing threat to humanity due to the pervasiveness of contaminants in water bodies. Significant efforts have been made to separate these hazardous components to purify polluted water through various methods. However, conventional remediation methods suffer from limitations such as low uptake capacity or selectivity, and current water quality standards cannot be met. Recently, advanced porous materials (APMs) have shown promise in improved segregation of contaminants compared to traditional porous materials in uptake capacity and selectivity. These materials feature merits of high surface area and versatile functionality, rendering them ideal platforms for the design of novel adsorbents. This Review summarizes the development and employment of APMs in a variety of water treatments accompanied by assessments of task‐specific adsorption performance. Finally, we discuss our perspectives on future opportunities for APMs in water purification. Advanced porous materials (APMs) including MOFs, COFs, and POPs, have seen tremendous development as effective adsorbents for the segregation of components of interest. In this Review, recent advancements of APMs applied for water purification are overviewed systematically according to the type of water contaminant.

Water Sorption Evolution Enabled by Reticular Construction of Zirconium Metal–Organic Frameworks Based on a Unique [2.2]Paracyclophane Scaffold

Abstract:Water vapor sorption by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has gathered significant interest because of its prominent potential in many applications such as moisture harvesting, dehumidification, heat pump regulation, and hydrolysis catalysis. However, the reticular design and exploration of robust and high-performing Zr-MOFs for such purposes remains a sought-after endeavor. In this work, we present the deployment of reticular chemistry to target a series of robust Zr-MOFs based on a unique [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) scaffold. The ease of functionalization of PCP enables the desired synthesis of three carboxylate linkers, one ditopic and two tetratopic, which further assemble into a total of five Zr-MOFs with distinct topological structures, i.e., a new 2D net (NU-700), fcu (NU-405), flu (NU-1800), she (NU-602), scu (NU-913). Notably, the water vapor sorption performances of all the Zr-MOFs are highly dependent on their framework topology and pore metric, in which NU-602 and NU-913 with uniform 1D channels exhibit S-shaped water sorption isotherms with a steep pore-filling step and high uptake capacities of 0.72 g g-1 at 70% relative humidity (RH) and 0.88 g g-1 at 60% RH, respectively. Moreover, NU-913 displays exceptionally high working capacity of 0.72 g g-1 in the range of 40-60% RH. Additionally, we demonstrate that the hydrolytic stability and water adsorption-desorption recyclability of NU-913 can be remarkably improved by capping the Zr6 nodes with the more hydrophobic agent, trifluoroacetic acid, making it a potential candidate for water sorption-based applications.

Abstract:Developing high-performance nanostructured sorbents for water treatment is of great importance. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate three-dimensional hierarchical architectures by integrating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) into macroscopic graphite felt (GF) supports. The physicochemical properties of CNF@GF monoliths including surface areas, densities, porosities, and pore structures could be conveniently tuned by varying reaction time. The CNF@GF monoliths were utilized as advanced sorbents for the removal of Pb2+, Congo red, organic solvents, and oils from aqueous solutions. The characteristics of adsorption processes including kinetics, isotherms, and regeneration were investigated. It is demonstrated that the CNF@GF exhibits outstanding performance for water treatment in terms of adsorption capacities, recovering, and recyclability. As such, the versatile CNS@GF monoliths show great application potential for water treatment.
