Abstract:Objectives: To describe the rate and type of netball injuries sustained during women's university-level tournament matches in South Africa. Design: Descriptive epidemiological study. Setting: Three editions of the women's Varsity Netball tournament (2021-23). Participants: Student-athletes representing nine university women's teams. Main outcome measures: Medical attention match injuries prospectively recorded by team medical staff. Injuries were classified according to the 2020 consensus statement, with the addition of "concussion" as a separate pathology type. The main outcomes are reported as incidence (injuries per 1000h; 95% confidence intervals - CIs), burden (days lost per 1000h; 95%CIs), and frequency (% of all injuries). Results: Sixty-three injuries were recorded from 48 different players (58.8 per 1000h; 45.2-75.3) and the overall injury burden was 401 days per 1000h (364-440). Injury incidence by pathology type was highest for joint sprains (28.9 per 1000h), tendinopathies (7.5 per 1000h), and concussions (4.7 per 1000h). Joint sprains to the ankle accounted for 49% of the overall estimated days lost. Conclusions: Ankle joint sprains should be the primary target of injury risk reduction programmes in highly trained netball players. Concussions were reported and efforts should be made to increase awareness among players, coaches and medical staff.

Abstract:Case fatality ratio and permanent sequelae of acute bacterial meningitis remain high in recent decades. A prospective longitudinal study of adult patients admitted with community acquired acute bacterial meningitis at a tertiary infectious diseases unit aimed to identify predictors of unfavourable outcome – death and sequelae. Anamnestic, clinical and laboratory data and clinical outcome were recorded. From 1997 to 2006, 279 adults (122F, 157M) with a median age of 51 y were admitted with acute bacterial meningitis. Predisposing condition and comorbidity were recorded in 42% and 38% of patients, respectively. Time between symptoms onset and antibiotic treatment ranged from 6 to 160 h. An aetiological agent was identified in 77% of patients: Streptococcus pneumoniae (29%) and Neisseria meningitidis (27%) were the most frequent. 55 patients (20%) died and 63 (23%) had neurological sequelae 6 months after discharge. In multivariate analysis, 7 independent predictors of unfavourable outcome were identified: internal comorbidity, time to treatment >48 h, coma, hypotension, high CSF protein, low glucose ratio, and non-meningococcal aetiology. The results suggest that acute bacterial meningitis remains associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Maintaining a high clinical suspicion and initiating appropriate diagnostic testing and therapeutic interventions promptly are essential for an optimal clinical outcome.

Abstract:Background: The game of badminton has evolved since the early injury epidemiology studies. Since there is no published literature on injuries in elite junior badminton players from an international cohort, this study provides an updated reference of injuries in this population to inform future injury prevention strategies. The objective of this study was to report injury prevalence and training hours in elite junior badminton players participating at the World Junior Championships in 2018. Methods: A questionnaire was used to collect data and was available in English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese or Chinese. It was designed to collect information including basic demographics, hours of training and competition, number of tournaments per year, current and previous injuries characterized by anatomical region, diagnosis, treatment and injury duration. The questions were focused on previous significant injuries lasting a minimum of 30 days and current musculoskeletal symptoms. Results: One hundred and sixty-four of 436 players with a mean age of 17.1 years (SD ± 0.8) filled in the questionnaire. Participants represented North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and The Pacific's including the top 10 performing nations, providing a good overall representation of tournament participants. A total of 104 significant injuries (median duration of 90 days) with disruption of full training or competition capacity were reported. Seventy-eight (48%) players reported one or more significant injury. The most common location of significant injury was in the knee, ankle and lower back. Eleven injuries were reported as stress fractures. In 35 cases a player felt lasting limitation from a significant injury and in 37 cases a player felt lasting pain. Conclusion: Previously in their career almost 50% of the players had sustained a significant injury with a median duration of 90 days. The lower extremities and the lower back were the predominant injured regions. In one third of the injuries a player had lasting limitations or pain. Stress fractures may be a serious underestimated problem in badminton.
A cross-sectional retrospective survey of injury situation and prevalence in female recreational netball players with a focus on knee injuries

Abstract:Objectives: To examine situations of injury and injury prevalence in female adult recreational netball players with a focus on knee injuries. Design: Cross sectional retrospective online survey. Participants: 193 female adult recreational netball players. Main outcome measures: Any injury sustained in the previous 12 months, situation of injury, any knee injuries sustained in the previous five years, the length of time unable to play netball, and knee injury management. Results: In the previous 12 months, 61% of respondents sustained injury to the lower limb, and 27% to the upper limb. Lower limb injury situations were mostly landings (46%). Upper limb injury situations were mostly collisions with an opponent (27%). 46% reported sustaining a knee injury in the previous five years. Following knee injury, players were unable to play netball for 6.8 ± 7.0 months (training); and 8.2 ± 7.4 months (matches) respectively. Conclusions: Lower limb injury is more common than upper limb injury in recreational adult female adult netball players. Landing was the most common situation of injury for the lower limb including knee injuries. In the previous five years, nearly half of the players had sustained a knee injury resulting in more than six months out of the game.
Evolving injury profiles amid advancing sport: Musculoskeletal injuries in ringball players

Abstract:Background: Ringball, a sport historically derived from conventional basketball and netball, demonstrates the evolution of traditional sport. The variations between these sports may predispose players to different risk factors and consequent injuries and their impact, yet they are usually considered comparably. Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries and to profile injuries based on location, severity, and mechanisms of occurrence. A further objective was to compare the injuries sustained in ringball with that of basketball and netball. Methods: A questionnaire-based study, administered to 110 ringball players in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was applied. Data were described and compared using frequencies/percentages for categorical variables. Results: Seventy-six ringball players completed the questionnaire (69% response rate). The prevalence of at least one injury during/after the last or current season was 80% (n=61). The most commonly reported injury was to the foot/ankle (36%; n=33) followed by the knee (29%; n=27) and wrist (9%; n=8). The most common mechanisms of injury reported were landing (15%; n=9), jumping (9%; n=5), goal shooting (7%; n=4), defending (7%; n=4) and collision (7%; n=4). Discussion: Ringball shares similar injuries to that of basketball/netball, with foot/ankle injuries being the most prevalent. The prevalence of other injuries in ringball differed from basketball/netball, suggesting variations between these sports as a contributor to the injuries described. Conclusion: The evolution of sport and the modifications in rules/techniques may create a nuanced injury profile to those commonly identified. The combination of a sport's uniqueness/modification and its similarities to other sports warrants the need for more tailored approaches to injury prevention and a platform for future research.

Abstract:Introduction The rise in participation in sports, like women's cricket, is linked with increased injury risk. Providing high-level longitudinal data is the first step in implementing evidence-based injury prevention strategies. Design Prospective cohort study Objective This cohort study aims to describe the injury profiles in sub-elite women's cricket in South Africa during the 2022/23 season. Methods Injuries were prospectively recorded using injury surveillance questionnaires, injury surveillance database, and logbooks completed by each team's medical staff. Injury rates were investigated for match and training days, body region, player role, nature, and activity at the time of injury. Results Three teams with a total of 44 players (20.86 ± 1.6 years) were included in the study. Injury incidence was 85.23 per 1000 player match days, 15.91 for match time-loss and 69.32 for non-time-loss, with 2.95% of players unavailable for match selection on any day. Fast bowlers had the highest injury incidence. Fielding caused 46.67% of all injuries. Injury incidence was higher in training than in matches. The wrist/hand had the highest injury incidence and caused the most match time-loss. Conclusion This study provides valuable insights regarding the current injury rates in sub-elite female cricket players.

Effect of Short-term Arginine Supplementation on Vasodilation and Performance in Intermittent Exercise in Judo Athletes

Abstract:Arginine supplementation has been shown to induce endothelium-dependent vasodilation and enhance exercise performance via increasing nitric oxide (NO) production in patients with various cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of short-term arginine supplementation on vasodilation and performance in intermittent anaerobic exercise in well-trained male athletes. Ten elite male college judo athletes completed 2 trials in a randomized crossover and placebo-controlled design. All subjects received 6 g/day arginine (ARG trial) or placebo (CON trial) for 3 days before undertaking an intermittent anaerobic cycling test. In each exercise test, the subjects alternated 20-sec all-out exercise and 15-sec rest periods for 13 sets on a cycle ergometer. Vasodilation was measured using photoplethysmography in pre-supplementation, pre-exercise, and 0, 3, 6, 10, 30, and 60 min of post-exercise. The 2 trials had similar vascular reflection index and heart rate before the exercise test. Immediately after exercise reflection index of both trials was significantly reduced, then it showed a trend of decrease at 6 and 10 min after exercise (p<0.1). However, no significant difference in refection index and heart rate was found at any the same time point between the trials. There was no significant difference in power drop of each set and the decrements of peak and average power between the trials. This study suggested that the short-term arginine supplementation had no effect on exercise-induced vasodilation and performance in intermittent anaerobic tests in well-trained male judo athletes.
Injuries sustained in National Collegiate Athletic Association men's and women's basketball, 2009/2010-2014/2015

Abstract:Background/aim: Recent rule changes regarding the safety of basketball athletes necessitate up-to-date reports of injury incidence. This study describes the epidemiology of injuries in men's and women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball during the 2009/2010-2014/2015 seasons. Methods: Basketball injury data originate from the 2009/2010-2014/2015 academic years from the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA-ISP) from 78 men's and 74 women's NCAA basketball programmes which provided 176 and 181 team-seasons, respectively. A reportable injury occurred during organised practice or competition and required attention from an athletic trainer (AT) or physician. Injury rates, injury proportions and rate ratios (RRs) were calculated. All 95% CIs not containing 1.0 were considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 2308 and 1631 injuries were reported in men's and women's basketball, respectively, for injury rates of 7.97 and 6.54/1000 athlete-exposures (AEs). The rate was higher in men than women (RR=1.22; 95% CI 1.15 to 1.30). Non-time-loss (NTL) injuries (resulting in participation restriction time under 24 hours) accounted for 64.8% and 53.6% of men's competition and practice injuries, respectively, and 53.9% and 51.3% of women's competition and practice injuries, respectively. Injuries to the lower extremity were the most common in competitions (men: 54.9%; women: 59.0%) and practices (men: 62.4%; women: 67.3%). The most common injury in men's and women's basketball was ankle sprain (17.9% and 16.6%, respectively). Conclusions: NTL injuries account for over half of all injuries in basketball. Most injuries were lower extremity injuries, specifically ankle sprains. While rule changes have been implemented to make basketball safer, continued research is needed to assess the effectiveness of these changes.

Abstract:Context: Frequent inspection of sports-related injury epidemiology among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women's basketball student-athletes is valuable for identifying injury-related patterns. Background: Emerging patterns in epidemiology of NCAA women's basketball injuries are unknown though general sports medicine practices, and playing rules and regulations have evolved in recent years. Methods: Athlete exposures (AEs) and injury incidence data were reported to the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program between 2014-2015 and 2018-2019. Injury counts, rates, and proportions were used to examine injury characteristics, and injury rate ratios (IRRs) were used to assess injury rate differences. Results: Practice and competition injury rates were 5.93 and 10.35 per 1000 AEs, respectively. Preseason injury rates were higher than regular (IRR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.31, 1.53) and postseason (IRR = 3.12; 95% CI = 2.39, 4.07). Ankle sprains (14.3%), concussions (7.5%), and anterior cruciate ligament tears (2.5%) were the most commonly reported injuries. Summary: Higher rates of practice and competition injuries, as well as ankle sprains, were observed relative to previous reports; continuous monitoring is necessary to identify potential contributing factors to these trends.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The primary aims of this retrospective study were to describe the burden of injury presenting to the medical team and the changes in injury profile over 10 years (2003-2012) at The Championships, Wimbledon. Secondary aims included description of gender difference in rates, distribution and pathology of injuries.DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort of player injury presentations over 10 years (2003-2012) at The Championships, Wimbledon.RESULTS: The overall rate of presentation of injury for all players over the 10-year period was 20.7 per 1000 sets played. Injury rates were lower for male players (17.7 injuries per 1000 sets played) than female players (23.4 injuries per 1000 sets played). There was variability in the numbers of injuries reported by men and women players over the 10-year period.CONCLUSIONS: The rates of presentation of injury at this Grand Slam tennis tournament varied between male and female players, and between years. More robust systems of data collection are required in professional tennis to enable more sophisticated injury data analysis between sexes, years and different playing surfaces.

Abstract:This study employs literature review, questionnaire surveys, interviews, and mathematical statistics to investigate and analyze the occurrence and causes of sports injuries among 346 college students at a physical education institution. The results indicate that there are differences in the probabilities of sports injuries among college students in different sports, and there are also variations in the probabilities of injuries to different body parts. The causes of sports injuries are multifaceted. It is recommended that in future sports training, coaches should further strengthen the protective measures taken for physical education students, and also that students' self-protection awareness and measures need to be improved.
Injury prevention knowledge, beliefs and strategies in elite female footballers at the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019

Abstract:Objectives: This study assessed knowledge, beliefs and practices of elite female footballers regarding injury prevention. Methods: A survey was sent to players participating in the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019. Questions covered three injury prevention domains: (1) knowledge; (2) attitudes and beliefs; (3) prevention practices in domestic clubs. Additionally, ACL injury history was assessed. Results: Out of 552 players, 196 women responded (35.5%). More than 80% of these considered injury risk to be moderate or high. Players listed knee, ankle, thigh, head and groin as the most important injuries in women's football. The most important risk factors identified were low muscle strength, followed by poor pitch quality, playing on artificial turf, too much training, reduced recovery and hard tackles. In these elite players, 15% did not have any permanent medical staff in their domestic clubs, yet more than 75% had received injury prevention advice and more than 80% performed injury prevention exercises in their clubs. Players identified the two most important implementation barriers as player motivation and coach attitude. Two-thirds of players used the FIFA 11+ programme in their clubs. Conclusions: This diverse group of elite players demonstrated good knowledge of risk level and injury types in women's football. Of the risk factors emphasised by players, there was only one intrinsic risk factor (strength), but several factors out of their control (pitch quality and type, training volume and hard tackles). Still players had positive attitudes and beliefs regarding injury prevention exercises and indicated a high level of implementation, despite a lack of medical support.

Abstract:Our objective was to investigate the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries sustained by elite level curling athletes during international competition. This study was conducted during the 2008 World Men's Curling Championships. All registered athletes and the tournament medical team were given report forms for documenting injuries that occurred during the tournament. Report form information included demographics, area injured, types of injuries sustained, and curling-specific aggravating conditions. During the competition five injuries were reported, resulting in an injury rate of .07 injuries per game. Only one reported injury resulted in missed competition (.014 injuries per game). All reported injuries involved increased pain during curling-specific activities. At the elite international competitive level, injury incidence in curling was found to be low. Future exploration over the course of a season may be beneficial to identify risk factors and to assist with formulating training strategies to decrease injury risk.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Unlike other team sports on the court, volleyball lacks physical contact between players, the teams being separated by the net. However, lower limb injuries take place during spiking and blocking trough unintentional and illegal intrusion of a player in the opponent’s court. Due to the specificity of the game, the joints of the upper limbs are also subject to overload. The purpose of this study is to analyze the international literature on injury and trauma in performance volleyball. Methods: We analysed several studies about injuries in performance volleyballwhich were identified using online databases: Google Scholar, EBSCO, Springer, Elsevier, and Scopus. Results: The injury patternshows the ankle sprain as being by far the most common injury in volleyball with a percentage of 31.9%. The knee is the second most injured anatomic site, 17.38% of injuries affecting this joint. Third most frequent injury affects the fingers 13.44%, followed by lower back 12,38% andshoulder trauma 12.18%. The hand is injured in 6.97%, while other injuries were found in 5.25% of cases. Conclusions: The need for in depth analysis of volleyball injuries still persists. Analysing the literature we are comming to understand the mechanisms that produce the injuries with the purpose of finding metods to avoid these unfortunate events before they happen. It is no longer enough to recover from an injury, it must be prevented entirely if possible. Time spent by a player recovering may negatively affect the team's performance. Injury prevention measures must occupy an important place in training. Coaches should take into acount all the factors that influence injury incidence and design the training plan accordingly.
Epidemiology of Common Injuries in the Volleyball Athlete

Abstract:Purpose of review: To review the recent literature regarding the epidemiology of injuries in the volleyball athlete across all levels of play and to discuss areas where further studies are needed. Recent findings: Injury epidemiology for volleyball at the collegiate and high school level has been supported by a longitudinal injury surveillance program through the NCAA Injury Surveillance System (NCAA ISS) and High School Reporting Information Online (HS RIO) for the past 30 years. The creation of the FIVB Injury Surveillance System (FIVB ISS) in 2010 shows promise in advancing the literature on the injury at the professional level, and further studies on beach volleyball injuries are needed. Overall, injury patterns in volleyball in the past decade showed similar distribution to prior studies, but the rate of injury may be decreasing. Common injuries in volleyball include ankle sprains, patellar tendinopathy, finger and thumb sprains, overuse injuries of the shoulder, and concussions. Injury surveillance from the NCAA has demonstrated injury trends at the collegiate level, but further longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate injury at the professional level and for beach volleyball to help develop injury prevention strategy.
An injury audit in high-level male youth soccer players from English, Spanish, Uruguayan and Brazilian academies

Abstract:Objectives: To identify the most common injury types/locations in high-level male youth soccer players (YSP). Design: Prospective cohort surveillance study. Setting: Professional soccer club academies. Participants: Six hundred and twenty-four high-level male YSP [Under 9 (U9) to U23 year-old age groups] from academies in England, Spain, Uruguay and Brazil. Main outcome measures: Injury type, location and severity were recorded during one season. Injury severity was compared between age groups, while injury type and location were compared between nations. Results: Four hundred and forty-three training or match injuries were recorded, giving an injury rate of 0.71 per player. Non-contact injuries were most common (58.5%), with most (44.2%) resolved between 8 and 28 days. Most injuries (75.4%) occurred in the lower limbs, with muscle (29.6%) the most commonly injured tissue. U14 and U16 suffered a greater number of severe injuries relative to U12 and U19/U20/U23/Reserves. Tendon injury rate was higher in Brazil vs. Spain (p < 0.05), with low back/sacrum/pelvis injury rate highest in Spain (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The proportion of severe injuries in U14 and U16 suggests YSP injury risk is maturation-dependent. Minimal differences in type and location between high-level YSP from four different countries suggest injury rates in this population are geographically similar.
Injury surveillance in English youth basketball: A 5-season cohort study to inform injury prevention strategies

Abstract:Objectives: Describe the injury risk of English youth basketball, comparing game versus training injury incidence and burden. Design: 5 season (2013/14-2018/19) prospective cohort study. Setting: Basketball academy at an English sports college. Participants: Male basketball players (n = 110, mean age; 17.3 ± 0.9 years). Main outcomes measures: Descriptive data regarding game and training injury incidence (injuries per 1000 athlete-exposures (AE)) and burden (severity x incidence) are provided with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Rate ratios (RR; 95% CI) were used to compare outcome measures, with results statistically significant if the 95% CI did not pass 1.0. Results: Fifty-four injuries were sustained during 13,350-AE (1666 games, 9684 training). Game injury incidence (12.0/1000-AE, 95% CI 6.7-17.3) was significantly greater than training injury incidence (2.4/1000-AE, 95% CI 1.4-3.3; RR = 5.1, 95% CI 2.8-9.2). Games had a significantly greater injury burden (216 days absence/1000-AE, 95% CI 121-311) than training (62 days absence/1000-AE, 95% CI 37-88; RR = 3.5, 95% CI 1.9-6.3). The ankle was the most injured body location (37%), whilst over 50% of injuries occurring through contact mechanisms. Conclusion: This study is the most comprehensive description of injury epidemiology in English youth basketball to date. This information can inform evidence-based injury prevention strategies to mitigate risk in this population.

Abstract:Context: The advent of Web-based sports injury surveillance via programs such as the High School Reporting Information Online system and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program has aided the acquisition of girls' and women's basketball injury data. Objective: To describe the epidemiology of injuries sustained in high school girls' basketball in the 2005-2006 through 2013-2014 academic years and collegiate women's basketball in the 2004-2005 through 2013-2014 academic years using Web-based sports injury surveillance. Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Setting: Online injury surveillance from basketball teams in high school girls (annual average = 100) and collegiate women (annual average = 57). Patients or other participants: Girls' and women's basketball players who participated in practices and competitions during the 2005-2006 through 2013-2014 academic years in high school or the 2004-2005 through 2013-2014 academic years in college. Main outcome measure(s): Certified athletic trainers collected time-loss (≥24 hours) injury and exposure data. Injury rates per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs) were calculated. Injury rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to compare injury rates by school size or division, time in season, event type, and competition level. Results: The High School Reporting Information Online system documented 2930 time-loss injuries during 1 609 733 AEs; the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program documented 3887 time-loss injuries during 783 600 AEs. The injury rate was higher in college than in high school (4.96 versus 1.82/1000 AEs; IRR = 2.73; 95% CI = 2.60, 2.86). The injury rate was higher in competitions than in practices for both high school (IRR = 3.03; 95% CI = 2.82, 3.26) and collegiate (IRR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.86, 2.12) players. The most common injuries at both levels were ligament sprains, concussions, and muscle/tendon strains; the majority of injuries affected the ankle, knee, and head/face. These injuries were often caused by contact with another player or a noncontact mechanism. Conclusions: Injury rates were higher in collegiate than in high school athletes and in competitions than in practices. Similarities in distributions of injuries by body parts, specific diagnoses, and mechanisms of injury suggest that both levels may benefit from similar injury-prevention strategies.
