Abstract:Abstract In view of the actual demand of toxic gas monitoring in the production, storage and use field environment of chemical enterprises, considering the large amount of monitoring data and the difficulty of real-time transmission of information, a toxic gas environment monitoring system is designed. The system based on low-power microcontroller chip CC2530 by using wireless sensor intelligent information processing and data communication technology, which evaluates and improves the ambient air conditions and provides theoretical basis and technical support. The sensor node collects the concentration data of CO, formaldehyde, ozone, SO 2 and other toxic gases in real time, processes them and sends them to the receiving end. According to the stored data, the receiver monitors the air quality of the industrial production and storage environment in real time, and effectively solves the problems of complex wiring and maintenance difficulties of traditional cable sensors to reduce the risk of accidents or early warning and reduce the hazards of accidents. The test results show that the system has stable performance, can effectively detect industrial toxic environmental parameters, and can be widely used in various fields, especially in unattended or inaccessible environment for monitoring tasks.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of a wireless sensor network particularly designed for remote monitoring and control of industrial parameters. The article describes the network components, protocol and sensor deployment, aimed to accomplish industrial constraint and to assure reliability and low power consumption. A particular case of study is presented. The system consists of a base station, gas sensing nodes, a tree-based routing scheme for the wireless sensor nodes and a real-time monitoring application that operates from a remote computer and a mobile phone. The system assures that the industrial safety quality and the measurement and monitoring system achieves an efficient industrial monitoring operations. The robustness of the developed system and the security in the communications have been guaranteed both in hardware and software level. The system is flexible and can be adapted to different environments. The testing of the system confirms the feasibility of the proposed implementation and validates the functional requirements of the developed devices, the networking solution and the power consumption management.

Abstract:This paper describes a distributed point-source monitoring platform for gas level and leakage detection in hazardous environments. The platform, based on a wireless sensor network (WSN) architecture, is organised into sub-networks to be positioned in the plant's critical areas; each sub-net includes a gateway unit wirelessly connected to the WSN nodes, hence providing an easily deployable, stand-alone infrastructure featuring a high degree of scalability and reconfigurability. Furthermore, the system provides automated calibration routines which can be accomplished by non-specialized maintenance operators without system reliability reduction issues. Internet connectivity is provided via TCP/IP over GPRS (Internet standard protocols over mobile networks) gateways at a one-minute sampling rate. Environmental and process data are forwarded to a remote server and made available to authenticated users through a user interface that provides data rendering in various formats and multi-sensor data fusion. The platform is able to provide real-time plant management with an effective; accurate tool for immediate warning in case of critical events.

Abstract:The safety of an operator working in a hazardous environment is a recurring topic in the technical literature of recent years, especially for high-risk environments such as oil and gas plants, refineries, gas depots, or chemical industries. One of the highest risk factors is constituted by the presence of gaseous substances such as toxic compounds such as carbon monoxide and nitric oxides, particulate matter or indoors, in closed spaces, low oxygen concentration atmospheres, and high concentrations of CO2 that can represent a risk for human health. In this context, there exist many monitoring systems for lots of specific applications where gas detection is required. In this paper, the authors present a distributed sensing system based on commercial sensors aimed at monitoring the presence of toxic compounds generated by a melting furnace with the aim of reliably detecting the insurgence of dangerous conditions for workers. The system is composed of two different sensor nodes and a gas analyzer, and it exploits commercial low-cost commercially available sensors.

Abstract:This paper studies a semiconductor wireless sensor system, which is composed of a semiconductor wireless sensor sampling circuit, gas-sensitive signal alarm and wireless transmitting circuit, and wireless radio frequency signal receiving circuit. The system is suitable for wireless monitoring of hydrogen fluoride gas in chemical plants. The hydrogen fluoride gas sensor is designed, integrated, and classified according to the polarity and size of the sensor output signal. The signal processing circuit of the sensor output signal is made with an integrated design. This paper developed a simulation experimental system for the wireless monitoring network characteristics of toxic hydrogen fluoride gas and completed the monitoring system’s sensor characteristic calibration and accuracy comparison simulation experiment, the communication distance test experiment of the communication system, and the research experiment on the influence of environmental humidity on the sensor characteristics of the monitoring system. In terms of software, the workflow of network nodes has been optimized. Since the structure of the wireless sensor network is not exactly the same in different application fields, the toxic gas monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks must focus on extending the network’s life cycle. Without affecting the normal operation of the system, distributed compressed sensing can greatly extend the service life of the system. Therefore, this subject combines the compressed sensing technology developed in recent years with the air monitoring system for the processing of transmission data, in order to achieve the purpose of further reducing the energy consumption of the system. The simulation experiment demonstrated that the lmF neural network combined with gas sensor array technology can realize qualitative identification, quantitative analysis of single gas, and quantitative analysis of mixed combustible gas. The research work in this area also provides a new way to further combine the miniature hydrogen fluoride gas sensor unit with sensor technology, integrate the hydrogen fluoride gas sensor unit and the electronic tag, and expand the wireless application of the gas sensor.

Abstract:There are some problems in the traditional warehousing monitoring systems, such as complex wiring and high power consumption. Sometimes the warehousing is so remote that it is not quite convenient to supply the alternating current with cable. This paper introduces a new warehousing environment monitor system based on wireless sensor network (WSN), which can acquire real-time warehousing environment parameters and reduce the unnecessary loss caused by emergency such as fire. We adopt the CC2530 as a wireless data transceiver, SHT11 temperature and humidity sensors to realize the gathering of warehousing environment parameter, and voice module to realize audio acquisition. The communication system run the corresponding program for the coordinator nodes and terminal nodes under the IAR system, and realize data transmission between the nodes in a star network. The experimental results show that the system can realize the acquisition and processing of environmental temperature and humidity in a wide area.

Abstract:Real time monitoring of the environment for gas leakages is crucial in industrial applications as they involve the use of toxic and combustible gases. To ensure the safety of the personnel working in these environments, the concentrations of the gases must be monitored and maintained. To secure the environment and prevent a gas leak from escalating to disastrous proportions, only monitoring and alerting will not suffice, and there must be a mechanism in place to shut down the gas supply. To address this need, this paper proposes a smart, wireless sensor‐actuator network built upon the Internet of Things for the real‐time monitoring of the environment, detecting gas leakages and the subsequent automatic shut‐off via a solenoid valve accompanied by timely alerts. Due to the autonomous nature of the system, it is highly reliable in disaster management. The system proposed in this paper boasts easy integration into existing environments with minimal modifications, thus making it portable, efficient and economic.

Abstract:In the process of long-distance transportation of different gas, the remote pipeline plays an irreplaceable role in energy transmission. When the pipeline is laid in remote areas for a long distance, it is easy to be influenced by geological disasters and complex working conditions, which may lead to corrosion and leakage. therefore, it is necessary to conduct pipeline gas real-time safety monitoring. An optical fiber gas leakage synchronous monitoring system was proposed and demonstrated based on distributed optical sensing technology for simultaneous multi-gas measurements. In this study, we discuss that the principle of multi-gas leakage synchronous monitoring system is investigated and then validated by the theoretical simulation experiments. Furthermore, gas concentration and leakage location discrimination tests are also conducted in laboratory. The experimental results show that the output intensity values increased obviously along with the gas concentration changes, and the response time of the sensor system is about 40 seconds, and it’s concluded that the multi-gas leakage synchronous monitoring system based on distributed optical fiber sensing technology exhibited good sensing and location discrimination performance.

Abstract:For the managers to improve their knowledge regarding the vibration condition of the ship they manage, a dense array of wireless sensors installed on the ship could provide ample amounts of data for monitoring vibration condition. The wireless sensor networks offer a distributed computing paradigm that allows sensor to self interrogate acceleration data. In particular, the proposed wireless sensor is constructed using a compact two layer printed circuit board. Furthermore, the wireless sensor utilizes an implementation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for wireless networks allowing it to participate in scalable, star network that is adaptable to network changes without requiring reprogramming. Farthermore, a data collection and analysis software with a database is built to realized more data-processing.

Abstract:In recent years, many studies have focused on the application of advanced technology as a way to improve management of construction safety management. A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), one of the key technologies in Internet of Things (IoT) development, enables objects and devices to sense and communicate environmental conditions; Building Information Modeling (BIM), a revolutionary technology in construction, integrates database and geometry into a digital model which provides a visualized way in all construction lifecycle management. This paper integrates BIM and WSN into a unique system which enables the construction site to visually monitor the safety status via a spatial, colored interface and remove any hazardous gas automatically. Many wireless sensor nodes were placed on an underground construction site and to collect hazardous gas level and environmental condition (temperature and humidity) data, and in any region where an abnormal status is detected, the BIM model will alert the region and an alarm and ventilator on site will start automatically for warning and removing the hazard. The proposed system can greatly enhance the efficiency in construction safety management and provide an important reference information in rescue tasks. Finally, a case study demonstrates the applicability of the proposed system and the practical benefits, limitations, conclusions, and suggestions are summarized for further applications.

Abstract:This paper offers the solution of the lack of technology mentioned above. Important parameters for compliance are measured by sensors that give electrical signal output of various types. After that, the data value from the sensors is collected by the microcontroller (data acquisition system). The microcontroller processes the data calculation and output the value useful for end-user such as SOx, NOx and CO2 emission. This end-user data is stored in the local memory of the microcontroller. Thereafter, the end-user data is transmitted through the Xbee to the receiver Xbee on the main microcontroller. This end-user data obtained by the main microcontroller is then stored and used 1 INTRODUCTION The increasing number of ships operating on the sea has increased the awareness of IMO (International Maritime Organization), the primary regulatory agency made of 170 Member States tasked with developing regulations for the control of pollution from international shipping activities. IMO created the IMO MARPOL Annex VI regulation to limit the emission of SOx, NOx, and CO2 from the ships. Tier II of the regulation has been enforced since 1st January 2011. Since the regulation requires the ship owner to keep complying throughout the time, there is a need for IMO to have a tool to enforce the regulation. The tool must have the sensors performance compliance as have been detailed by IMO. The tool of such has been developed by many to cater the need of ship owners, but not for the enforcement by IMO. Therefore, IMO lacks of a system that enables it to monitor the ship gas emission in real time.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of large number of small and low-cost devices equipped with sensing and communication facilities to monitor the environment. The collected data are transmitted to one or more base stations which can attach to other networks and/or databases. WSNs show particular promises in applications that involve complex, human-made systems such as underground mines, factory and industrial installation. In this paper, smart sensor network architecture for temperature and fire monitoring in underground mine is evaluated. Based on application requirements and site surveys, we develop a general architecture for this class of industrial applications. The architecture is based on multiple complementary wireless communications access networks between the environment and external environment, by using IEEE802.15/ZigBee, IEEE 802.11 and the Internet.

Abstract:During the few last years, indoor and outdoor Air Quality Monitoring (AQM) has gained a lot of interest among the scientific community due to its direct relation with human health. The Internet of Things (IoT) and, especially, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have given rise to the development of wireless AQM portable systems. This paper presents the development of a LoRa (short for long-range) based sensor network for AQM and gas leakage events detection. The combination of both a commercial gas sensor and a resistance measurement channel for graphene chemoresistive sensors allows both the calculation of an Air Quality Index based on the concentration of reducing species such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO, and it also makes possible the detection of NO2, which is an important air pollutant. The graphene sensor tested with the LoRa nodes developed allows the detection of NO2 pollution in just 5 min as well as enables monitoring sudden changes in the background level of this pollutant in the atmosphere. The capability of the system of detecting both reducing and oxidizing pollutant agents, alongside its low-cost, low-power, and real-time monitoring features, makes this a solution suitable to be used in wireless AQM and early warning systems.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks have extensively been utilized over the years for ambient data collection from diverse structural deployments including mesh, ad hoc, and hierarchical layouts. Several other applications of sensor networks may involve placing the nodes in a linear topology, constituting a special class of networks called linear sensor networks. In a densely deployed linear network case, issues related to optimal resource allocation and networking may persist because the standard sensor network protocols attempt to manage the network as a mesh or ad hoc infrastructure. Issues like recovering from holes where a node cannot reach another node in either side or policies to establish a route for data dissemination need to be intelligently solved for linear sensor networks. To solve such issues, we propose a linear sensor network deployment application for oil and gas pipeline using a custom sensor board accompanied with algorithms to solve network creation, leak interrupt detection, and routing of high-priority messages with reliability while keeping network alive at all times. The proposed system provides all the features of leakage detection, localization, parameter sensing, and actuation, while operating at low energy, high data reliability, and low latencies, while comparative results prove the efficacy of the system.

A Molecular Communication Link for Monitoring in Confined Environments

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a molecular diffusion based communications link that can reliably transport data over-the-air. We show that the system can also reliably transport data across confined structural environments, especially in cases where conventional electromagnetic (EM) wave based systems may fail. In particular, this paper compares the performance of our proprietary molecular communication test-bed with Zigbee wireless sensors in a metal pipe network that does not act as a radio wave-guide. The paper first shows that a molecular-based communication link's performance is determined primarily by the delay time spread of the pulse response. The paper go on to show that molecular-based systems can transmit more reliably in complex and confined structural environments than conventional EM-based systems. The paper then utilizes empirical data to find relationships between the received radio signal strength, the molecular pulse spread, data rate (0.1 bits/s) and the structural propagation environment.

Abstract:GasNet is a sensor network for real-timely monitoring the gas leak in residential buildings, in order to efficiently protect the buildings from gas leak explosion. GasNet provides low-latency and reliable gas leak ALARM message delivery in complicated RF environments. It does so through ROAP, a novel opportunistic forwarding mechanism considering link correlation. ROAP leverages a hop tree in opportunistic forwarder list selection to ensure the shortest hops to the sink. Furthermore, link correlation is used to obtain more accurate forwarding probability and to achieve fast retransmission. We implement the prototype of GasNet in campus testbed and evaluate its performance via extensive experiments. The experiment results show that ROAP achieves 100% gas leak ALARM message delivery in low latency.

Abstract:This article presents a new wireless seismic sensor network system, especially design for building monitoring. The designed prototype allows remote control, and remote and real-time monitoring of the recorded signals by any internet browser. The system is formed by several Nodes (based on the CC3200 microcontroller of Texas Instruments), which are in charge of digitizing the ambient vibrations registered by three-component seismic sensors and transmitting them to a central server. This server records all the received signals, but also allows their real-time visualization in several remote client browsers thanks to the JavaScript's Node.js technology. The data transmission uses not only Wi-Fi technology, but also the existing network resources that nowadays can be found usually in any official or residential building (lowering deployment costs). A data synchronization scheme was also implemented to correct the time differences between the Nodes, but also the long-term drifts found in the internal clock of the microcontrollers (improving the quality of records). The completed system is a low-cost, open-hardware and open-software design. The prototype was tested in a real building, recording ambient vibrations in several floors and observing the differences due to the building structure.

Abstract:The leakage of gases and chemical vapors is a common accident in laboratory processes that requires a rapid response to avoid harmful effects if humans and instruments are exposed to this leakage. In this paper, the performance of a portable sensor node designed for integration with mobile and stationary robots used to transport chemical samples in automated laboratories was tested and evaluated. The sensor node has four main layers for executing several functions, such as power management, control and data preprocessing, sensing gases and environmental parameters, and communication and data transmission. The responses of three metal oxide semiconductor sensors, BME680, ENS160, and SGP41, integrated into the sensing layer have been recorded for various volumes of selected chemicals and volatile organic compounds, including ammonia, pentane, tetrahydrofuran, butanol, phenol, xylene, benzene, ethanol, methanol, acetone, toluene, and isopropanol. For mobile applications, the sensor node was attached to a sample holder on a mobile robot (ASTI ProBOT L). In addition, the sensor nodes were positioned close to automation systems, including stationary robots. The experimental results revealed that the tested sensors have a different response to the tested volumes and can be used efficiently for hazardous gas leakage detection and monitoring.
