Abstract:Acoustic surface waves are supported at the surface of appropriately structured elastic materials. Here the excitation and propagation of the lowest-order surface mode supported by a square array of open-ended cavities on a metal plate submerged in water is demonstrated. This mode, which has a half-wavelength character in the cavity, arises due to inter-cavity interaction by evanescent diffraction of the pressure field, and forms a band from zero-frequency to an asymptotic limit frequency. The authors perform an acoustic characterization of the pressure field close to the surface of the perforated plate in the 60-100 kHz frequency range; sound is pulsed from a fixed point-like acoustic source, and the evolution of the acoustic field across the sample surface is measured as a function of time and space with a traversing detector. Using Fourier analysis, the dispersion is imaged between points of high-symmetry (Γ,X,M) and at planes in momentum-space at fixed frequencies. Beaming of acoustic energy on the surface over a narrow frequency band was observed, caused by the anisotropic mode dispersion of the acoustic surface wave on the square lattice. The measured dispersion shows good agreement with the predictions of a numerical model.
Effects of periodicity perturbations on the transmission by underwater phononic crystals

Abstract:The effects of periodicity perturbations in underwater phononic crystal layers composed of noninterpenetrating rows of identical shells are investigated. The results for one row are obtained by using a multiple scattering method between shells. Then, taking into account the multiple reflections and transmissions between two adjacent rows, a Debye series method is used to calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients by a finite number of rows. The paper focuses on three kinds of perturbations: (i) variation of the inner radius of shells from row to row, (ii) increase in the spacing from row to row and of the number of rows, and (iii) substitution of simple steel rows by steel-polyethylene bilayers. It is shown by studying the transmission coefficient that the case (i) permits the insertion of narrow pass bands in the stop band while the two other cases (ii) and (iii) widen the stop band. The study intends to model simple underwater acoustic filters.

Abstract:Vibration attenuation at junctions of point connected plates is an important aspect of structure-borne sound transmission in many realistic structures. The vibrational response of point connected plates can be predicted using statistical energy analysis (SEA), where coupling loss factors are calculated based on mobility formulations. However, in the process of deriving the coupling loss factors for point connected systems, a number of assumptions and simplifications were introduced. In this paper, a more advanced calculation model, based on a wave approach for elastically coupled semi-infinite plates, is presented. Local rigid connections are modeled using an elastic interlayer characterized by a space-dependent stiffness. Periodic boundary conditions are assumed at the junction and the plate response is described using a Fourier decomposition technique. Calculation results obtained for two different junction geometries demonstrate the influence of the distance between the point connections on the structure-borne sound transmission. Finally, a comparison between a number of numerical and experimental results illustrates the ability of the model to predict the influence of the density and the width of the point connections with good accuracy.

Abstract:We present a comparative study on band-gap structures of Lamb waves propagating in one-dimensional quasi-periodic composite thin plates, which are composed of different quasi-periodic models such as Cantor, Fibonacci, Thue-Morse, and Double periodic sequences, respectively. The transmitted power spectra (TPS) of the transient Lamb waves propagating in composite plates is calculated numerically by employing the finite element method. By comparing among TPS in different plates with the different ratios of the plate thickness to the lattice spacing, it is found that different quasi-periodic models present different behavior of the split-up of band gaps. Our works are significant not only for understanding intrinsic physical property of the quasi-periodic sequences, but also for designing the special structures of quasi-periodic arrays to adjust the width of band gaps and the frequency ranges of phononic crystals in applications.
Symmetry Breaking Induces Band Gaps in Periodic Piezoelectric Plates

Abstract:In this study, we propose a phononic plate model with periodically corrugated surfaces and investigate the propagation behavior of Lamb waves in it. In contrast to the traditional phononic crystals which are composed of isotropic materials, the electroelastic coupling is taken into account in this investigation. Based on the Floquet's theorem, the Lamb wave solution is expanded in the series form of spatially harmonic plane waves. Band structures in the first Brillouin zone are presented graphically. The band gaps can be tuned by adjusting the structural parameters. We find that the structural symmetry of the plate has significant influence on the band gap properties. The symmetry breaking of the plate structure leads to more band gaps appearing in the first Brillouin zone. Moreover, the band gaps are also sensitive to the symmetry of the electric boundary conditions, which provides a feasible way to electrically control the acoustic band structure.

Abstract:Theoretical studies are presented for the band structures of plate-mode waves in a one-dimensional (1-D) phononic crystal plate consisting of piezoelectric ceramics placed periodically in an epoxy substrate. The dependences of the widths and starting frequencies of first band gaps (FBG) on the filling fraction and the thickness to lattice pitch ratio are calculated for different polarizations of piezoelectric ceramics under different electric boundary conditions, i.e., short circuit (SC) and open circuit (OC). We found that the FBG always is broadened by polarizing piezoelectric ceramics, and the FBG widths with SC always are larger than that with OC for the same polarization. Our research shows that there are three critical parameters which determine the FBG: the polarized directions, the filling fraction, and the ratio of the plate thickness to the lattice pitch, respectively. Therefore, we can control the width and starting frequency of the FBG in the engineering according to need by choosing these parameters of the system.
Attenuation band splitting in a finite plate strip with two-dimensional acoustic black holes

Abstract:Acoustic black holes (ABH) lattice is an effective way to realize the bandgaps (BGs) through lightweight design. The predicted BGs using infinitely large periodic structures are commonly believed to enable corresponding attenuation bands (ABs) even the structure only contains a limited number of unit cells. This paper reports an unusual splitting phenomenon in the ABs of a finite plate strip with two-dimensional (2D) ABHs. A wide AB predicted by BG is split into two ABs in the finite strip separated by a high resonance peak, which challenges the aforementioned common belief. Results show that the increasing number of periodic unit cells has a negligible effect on the frequency and amplitude of the resonance peak. Its underlying mechanism is clarified by investigating the relationship between the BGs and ABs, obtained from infinite and finite periodic plate strips with the same 2D ABHs respectively. Complex wavenumber analysis results show the existence of two flexural wave modes in the considered frequency range due to the finite width of the strip. Two types of BGs, in which one satisfies the Bragg condition, are found when both wave modes fail to propagate. Analysis of structural modes further uncover the physical reason for the emerging AB splitting: a certain natural frequency of the boundary portion of the 2D ABHs strip falling into the theoretical BG. Due to the boundary reflection and energy concentration, this structural portion can loosely be regarded as a clamped-free plate strip. It is demonstrated that the resonance peak splitting the AB becomes tunable via disrupting the structural details of finite ABH strips. In particular, extending the terminal end of a finite ABH strip allows the change in boundary portion, which is conducive to eliminating the splitting peak. The reported study is helpful for the design of finite periodic structures with broadband attenuation bandgap.

Abstract:<p>The propagation of waves in fluid-saturated porous periodic structures is significantly affected by the interface condition between adjacent layers. We consider in this paper the partial-open pore interface condition between adjacent layers in a one-dimensional fluid-saturated porous phononic crystal. A transfer matrix method is devised to obtain both the complex band structure and the poroelastic Bloch waves of the crystal. Spectral transmission through a finite structure is further computed by a stiffness matrix method. Attention is restricted to normal incidence of longitudinal waves. The influence of the pore blockage, a parameter of the partial-open pore interface condition, and of porosity and viscosity are investigated. The value of the pore blockage is found to influence significantly both the dispersion of poroelastic waves but also the partition of wave energy between solid skeleton and pore fluid. The effects of porosity and viscosity in the case of the partial-open pore interface condition are similar to what was previously obtained in the fully open pore case.</p>

Abstract:Band gaps appear in the frequency spectra of periodic materials and structures. In this work we examine flexural wave propagation in beams and investigate the effects of the various types and properties of periodicity on the frequency band structure, especially the location and width of band gaps. We consider periodicities involving the repeated spatial variation of material, geometry, boundary and/or suspended mass along the span of a beam. In our formulation, we implement Bloch’s theorem for elastic wave propagation and utilize Timoshenko beam theory for the kinematical description of the underlying flexural motion. For the calculation of the frequency band structure we use the transfer matrix method, derived here in generalized form to enable separate or combined consideration of the different types of periodicity. Our results provide band-gap maps as a function of the type and properties of periodicity, and as a prime focus we identify and mathematically characterize the condition for the transition between Bragg scattering and local resonance, each being a unique wave propagation mechanism, and show the effects of this transition on the lowest band gap. The analysis presented can be extended to multi-dimensional phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials.

Abstract:A plane-wave expansion approach is developed to solve the mild-slope equation for liquid surface waves propagating over a bottom with periodic structures. Band structures are calculated for the bottom periodically drilled with the square or triangular lattice of holes. Complete band gaps are found for both lattices. Parameters that influence the formation of band gaps are discussed.

Abstract:Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) lattice structures show promise for achieving broadband bandgap in lightweight design. Existing ABH lattice research usually assumes that the bandgaps of infinite periodic structure are roughly the same as the attenuation band with strong energy attenuation in the finite counterpart. This work is concerned with comparison of the real attenuation bandwidth of finite periodic ABH structures and the bandgap of the infinite counterpart. The plate strips consisting of different numbers of periodic ABH elements are considered. It is observed that the bandgap-predicted attenuation band is split into two narrow attenuation bands, so that the periodic ABHs fails to ensure a broadband and continuous attenuation in the finite scenarios. Results show that there are resonance modes of finite plate strips with ABHs falling into the bandgap due to the boundary reflection and would result in high transmission peaks within the bandgap-predicted attenuation band. This unexpected phenomenon suggests the gap between the attenuation bandwidth of finite periodic structure and the bandgap of the corresponding infinite one. Analysis shows that the resonance mode of finite plate strips, which reduces the bandgap-predicted attenuation bandwidth, can be tuned by geometrically disturbing the periodicity and symmetry of the finite periodic configuration.

Abstract:<p>In this study, a novel plate-type resonator is proposed, and the bandgap properties of a metamaterial sandwich plate containing a two-dimensional periodic array of these plate-type resonators are numerically and experimentally investigated. The finite element method is applied to calculate the band structure and the transmission spectra. The formation mechanisms of the bandgaps are investigated via the analysis of the mode shapes of the plate-type resonator and face plate in a unit cell. The results demonstrate that both locally resonant and Bragg bandgaps exist in the proposed structure. The selective coupling between the resonant modes of the plate-type resonator and the face plate is a necessary condition for the generation of locally resonant bandgaps that the resonant modes of the plate-type resonator can produce a reaction force on the support. The effect of the geometric parameters and surface mass ratio on the bandgaps is investigated, and the effect of the introduction of the plate-type resonator on the Bragg bandgap is studied. The improvements of the plate-type resonator by changing its structure or moving its attachment point are also discussed. Moreover, a metamaterial sandwich plate specimen is fabricated and vibration experiments are conducted, and it is observed that there is good agreement between the numerical predictions and the experimental results. The proposed strategy contributes to the possibility of fabricating a simpler structure to promote the exploitation of metamaterial sandwich plates in engineering.</p>

Abstract:The multi-mode and dispersion characteristics of guided waves in plate bring great challenges to the manipulation of guided waves and controlling vibration and noise. In this study, the Stroh formalism is developed to establish a theoretical model for deriving the dispersion relations of guided waves in a multilayered piezoelectric plate. The dispersion characteristics under different electrical boundary conditions introduced by periodic shunting circuits are discussed to reveal the influences of external circuits on guided wave propagation. The proper shunting circuit is not only the key point to obtain the specific frequency of bandgap, but also the effective method to control the bandwidth. Furthermore, for the separation of symmetric and anti-symmetric modes of guided waves, the multilayered piezoelectric plate with a mirror plane is studied by using an equivalent model. Results indicate that the propagation behaviors of guided waves in multilayered piezoelectric plates can be interpreted by developed Stroh formalism, and their bandgaps can be effectively manipulated by periodically external circuits. The tunable bandgaps in this work could be helpful for designing smart devices of wave isolation based on multilayered piezoelectric plate.

Abstract:We study both theoretically and experimentally the propagation of liquid surface waves over a periodically drilled bottom. A slab of a plate drilled with a triangular array of holes is placed in the middle of a liquid vessel. With the presence of point source waves generated on the one side of the plate, we can obtain propagative information of liquid surface waves through the observations of the outgoing waves on the other side of the plate. Our experiment confirms our previous theoretical predictions of the existence of complete band gaps for liquid surface waves propagating over a periodically drilled bottom.

Abstract:In order to study the characteristics of acoustic/elastic wave propagation in one-dimensional (1D) solid-fluid periodic structure incited by omnidirectional incidence, a theoretical model of wave propagation in 1D solid-fluid periodic structure is established using a transfer matrix method. Based on this model, the band structures of the infinite case and the transmission properties of the finite one are further calculated and analyzed. The results show that an acoustic band fracture appears in the low frequency transmission zone for a certain incident angle. The corresponding incident angle of the fracture is non-relevant to the mass densities or the thicknesses of the solid and fluid layers constituting the periodic structure, and determined only by the wave velocity of the constituent material.
Acoustic Waves In Phononic Crystal Plates

Abstract:Recently, the study on elastic waves in phononic crystal plates is becoming a research hotspot due to its potential applications, especially in wireless communication, transducer and sensor system [1-10]. The phononic crystal plates commonly consist of two materials with large contrast in elastic properties and densities, arranging in a periodic (or quasiperiodic) array. The absolute band gaps in composite plates can forbid the propagation of all elastic wave modes in all directions. Comparing with the bulk wave and surface acoustic wave devices, phononic crystal plates have better performance in elastic wave propagation since the phase speed of most Lamb wave modes (except for A0 mode) is faster than surface wave mode, and also the wave energy in plates is totally confined between the upper and nether free-stress boundaries regardless of the air damp and self-dissipation, which provides a special potentiality in micro-electronics in wireless communication. The propagation of Lamb waves is much more complicated than bulk wave and surface acoustic wave in terms of the free-stress boundaries which can couple the longitudinal and transversal strain components. The first attempt to describe the propagation of Lamb waves with wavelength comparable with the lattice is due to Auld and co-workers [11-12], who studied 2D composites within the couple-mode approximation. Alippi et al. [13] have presented an experimental study on the stopband phenomenon of lowest-order Lamb waves in piezoelectric periodic composite plates and interpreted their results in terms of a theoretical model, which provides approximate dispersion curves of the lowest Lamb waves in the frequency range below the first thickness mode by assuming no coupling between different Lamb modes. The transmissivity of the finite structure to Lamb wave modes was also calculated by taking into account the effective plate velocities of the two constituent materials [14]. Based on a rigorous theory of elastic wave, Chen et al.[1] have employed plane wave expansion (PWE) method and transient response analysis (TRA) to demonstrate the existence of stop bands for lower-order Lamb wave modes in 1D plate. Gao et al.[8] have developed a virtual plane wave expansion (V-PWE) method to study the substrate effect on the band gaps of lower-order Lamb waves propagating in thin plate with 1D phononic crystal coated on uniform substrate. They also studied the quasiperiodic (Fibonacci system) 1D system and find out the existence of split in phonon band gap [2]. In order to reduce the computational complexity without losing the accuracy, Zhu et al.[9] have promoted an efficient method named harmony response analysis (HRA) and supercell plane wave expansion (SC PWE) to study the behavior of Lamb wave in silicon-based 1D composite plates. Zou et al.[10] have employed V-PWE method to study the band gaps of plate-mode waves in 1D piezoelectric composite plates with substrates.
The role of frequency and impedance contrasts in bandgap closing and formation patterns of axially-vibrating phononic crystals

Abstract:Bandgaps, or frequency ranges of forbidden wave propagation, are a hallmark of Phononic Crystals (PnCs). Unlike their lattice counterparts, PnCs taking the form of continuous structures exhibit an infinite number of bandgaps of varying location, bandwidth, and distribution along the frequency spectrum. While these bandgaps are commonly predicted from benchmark tools such as the Bloch-wave theory, the conditions that dictate the patterns associated with bandgap symmetry, attenuation, or even closing in multi-bandgap PnCs remain an enigma. In this work, we establish these patterns in one-dimensional rods undergoing longitudinal motion via a canonical transfer-matrix-based approach. In doing so, we connect the conditions governing bandgap formation and closing to their physical origins in the context of the Bragg condition (for infinite media) and natural resonances (for finite counterparts). The developed framework uniquely characterizes individual bandgaps within a larger dispersion spectrum regardless of their parity (i.e., odd vs even bandgaps) or location (low vs high-frequency), by exploiting dimensionless constants of the PnC unit cell which quantify the different contrasts between its constitutive layers. These developments are detailed for a bi-layered PnC and then generalized for a PnC of any number of layers by increasing the model complexity. We envision this mathematical development to be a future standard for the realization of hierarchically-structured PnCs with prescribed and finely tailored bandgap profiles.

Abstract:Characterizing the mechanics of periodic scaffolds used for bone tissue repair, while maintaining their structural integrity, is a challenging problem. By leveraging concepts arising from the bulk phononic crystal community, here we investigate the reflection of elastic waves propagating through a water-immersed biphasic architectured medium in the ultrasonic regime. Towards this goal, Bloch–Floquet analysis is applied on a 2D unit cell made of a soft inclusion embedded in a hard matrix, to recover its corresponding phononic band structure. Exploring the modal conversion at the boundary between the homogeneous incident medium and the architectured one allows identifying a bandgap within the considered frequency range, which exhibits a significant sensitivity to varying volume fraction of the soft phase. Conducting further numerical analyzes, which account for the viscoelasticity of the two constituent phases, along with the finite-size and bounded nature of the architectured medium, shows that a sudden amplitude rise of the reflection coefficient takes place at a frequency that is closely related to the upper limit of this bandgap. This hypothesis is experimentally verified on 3D-printed bio-mimicking samples, which exhibit an in-plane periodicity at a length scale of a few hundred micrometers. Altogether, the reported results suggest that tracking prohibited frequency bands via the measurement of the reflection coefficient allows for the monitoring of micro-architectured media like scaffolds.

Abstract:Acoustic bands are studied numerically for a Lamb wave propagating in an anti-symmetric structure of a one-dimensional periodic plate by using the method of supercell plane-wave expansion.The results show that all the bands are pinned in pairs at the Brillouin zone boundary as long as the anti-symmetry remains and acoustic band gaps （ABGs） only appear between certain bands.In order to reveal the relationship between the band pinning and the anti-symmetry,the method of eigenmode analysis is introduced to calculate the displacement fields of different plate structures.Further,the method of harmony response analysis is employed to calculate the reference spectra to verify the accuracy of numerical calculations of acoustic band map,and both the locations and widths of ABGs in the acoustic band map are in good agreement with those of the reference spectra.The investigations show that the pinning effect is very sensitive to the anti-symmetry of periodic plates,and by introducing different types of breakages,more ABGs or narrow pass bands will appear,which is meaningful in band gap engineering.
