Abstract:The catalytic activity of a new family of aluminum bis(iminophosphorano)methanide and methandiide complexes (1–5) toward olefin polymerization has been evaluated. The complexes (1–3) are monomeric methanide complexes of the form [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}Al(Cl)R] (R=Et) (1) or [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}AlR2} (R=Me, Bu) (2, 3) which have a structure reminiscent of R2Al(acac) complexes. These systems are moderately effective as transition metal-free ethylene polymerization catalysts when activated by trityl tetrafluoroborate yielding slurry polymerization activities in the range of 3–68g polymer/(mmol Alh) (normalized to 1atm) under normal industrial conditions. A remarkable bis(iminophosphorano)methandiide complex [κC,κC,κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2C}(R2Al)2] (R=Me) (4) which is based on a spirocyclic carbon center subtended by two AlMe2 units (each of which is further coordinated with an imine group) gave, under similar catalytic activation and reaction conditions, very high polymerization activity (2×103g polymer/(mmol Alh)) for ethylene. Solution polymerization activity was also high. This system also co-polymerized ethylene and 1-octene. The analog 5 wherein R=Bu was not so effective. These latter complexes indicate that dialuminum species may provide effective transition metal-free olefin polymerization systems.
Tetranuclear organometallic complexes based on 1,2-ethanedithiolate ligands as potential precursors for CuMS2 (M = Ga, In)

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a series of homologous tetranuclear complexes [((i)Pr3PCu)2(MR2)2(SCH2CH2S)2] (MR2 = GaMe2 (2), GaEt2 (3), Ga(i)Pr2 (4), Ga(n)Bu2 (5) and InMe2 (6), InEt2 (7), In(i)Pr2 (8), In(n)Bu2 (9)) and of related compounds [((i)Pr3PCu)3(MR2)(SCH2CH2S)2] (MR2 = GaMe2 (10), GaEt2 (11), Ga(i)Pr2 (12), Ga(n)Bu2 (13) and InMe2 (14), InEt2 (15), In(i)Pr2 (16), In(n)Bu2 (17)) are presented. The molecular structures of these were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Thermolysis processes of all the representatives of 2-9 were investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis and thermal decomposition in a nitrogen atmosphere in a quartz glass tube. According to powder X-ray diffraction studies these thermolysis residues predominantly consist of CuMS2 (M = Ga, In), which mainly occurred in the well known tetragonal chalcopyrite-type structure and partially in the hexagonal wurtzite-type structure. As expected from their composition, representatives of 10-17 form mixtures of CuMS2 and large amounts of Cu(2-x)S upon thermolysis.

Abstract:Bis(N-hexyl-N-(4-methylbenzyl)dithiocarbamato-S,S')copper(II) ( 1 ) and bis(N-dodecyl-N-(4-methylbenzyl)dithiocarbamato-S,S')copper(II) ( 2 ) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR and electronic spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction technique (SCXRD). X-ray structure analysis of both complexes reveals that the copper(II) has a distorted square planar geometry. The intermolecular interactions in crystal packing are quantified using Hirshfeld surface analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) studies were also performed to validate the experimental SCXRD results. Solvothermal decomposition method has been employed to prepare copper sulfides from complexes 1 and 2 . The obtained copper sulfide samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The PXRD patterns of the copper sulfide nanoparticles prepared from 1 and 2 indexed to the orthorhombic phase with estimated crystallite size of 30 nm and 24 nm, respectively. Photocatalytic activity of copper sulfide was evaluated using congo red under UV irradiation. Both copper sulfide nanoparticles are efficient photocatalyst for degradation of congo red dye.

Abstract:Heterobimetallic compounds with aluminyl ligands have hitherto gained a significant interest due to promising small molecule activation pathways including challenging substrates. While recently some trimetallic derivatives have been introduced, the steric demands required by these known systems has precluded the access of higher nuclearity systems. We herein report on a first hexametallic copper aluminylene aluminyl namely [(AlCp*)Cu{Al(HMDS)2}]2 ([5]2). The synthesis and characterization are enabled via designed Al(I) transfer using (AlCp*)4 and precursor complex [(PtBu3)Cu(HMDS)] (1). The associated pathway for aluminum transfer via different intermediates is discussed. This includes single crystal X-ray crystallography (SC-XRD), multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, control experiments and state-of-the art quantum chemical calculations. Preliminary reactivity studies showed that [5]2 can not only be constructed stepwise but also deconstructed to a bimetallic species with an N-heterocyclic carbene

Abstract:Several organo-gallium/indium chalcogenide complexes of copper(I), stabilized by trialkylphosphines, were isolated, structurally characterized by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and investigated in thermolysis experiments. The syntheses with [E(Me3Si)2] (E=S, Se) as a starting material and a chalcogen source involve the elimination of volatile silyl acetate, silyl ethers, and methane from copper(I) acetate, and Group 13 metal trimethyl compounds, respectively. Chalcogenide complexes, according to the general formulas [(R3PCu)4(MeM)4E6] (1-6) and [(R3PCu)6(MeM)4M4S13] (7-9; with R=alkyl and M=Ga, In), and mixed chalcogenide-phenylchalcogenolate complexes [(iPr3PCuEPh)3(MeGaE)4] (10, 11) were isolated. The heavy atom cores of 1-6 consist of an octahedron of chalcogen atoms, interpenetrated by a cube of metal atoms. Depending on the steric demand of the phosphine ligands, two constitutions are observed; the metal atoms of the same element either forming tetrahedra, or parallelograms, respectively. This constitutional isomerism is further investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Complexes 7-9 contain a central sulfur atom, surrounded by two interpenetrating tetrahedra of Group 13 metal atoms, an octahedron of copper atoms, and an icosahedron of twelve outer sulfur atoms; the heavy atom framework of 10 and 11 is a "cut-out" of this structure. Thermolysis experiments include thermogravimetry measurements and subsequent Rietveld phase analysis of the residues by using powder X-ray diffraction. The homologous compounds 1, 3, 4, and 6 yield the respective crystalline ternary semiconductor material CuME2 at temperatures below 300 °C. Partial release of Me3 M during the thermolysis process results in excess copper in the residue and therefore in small amounts of additional binary copper chalcogenide phases or metallic CuM alloys. Compound 8 produces nanocrystalline CuGaS2 at about 300 °C.

Abstract:Abstract Treatment of [CuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] with N‐heterocyclic thiols, i. e., 4,6‐dimethyl pyrimidine‐2‐thiol (dmpymSH), pyridine‐2‐thiol (pySH), resulted partially substituted product [CuCl(L)(PPh 3 ) 2 ] (L=C 5 H 4 NSH (pySH), SC 4 H(4,6‐Me 2 N 2 H) (dmpymSH). However, similar reaction with [CuI(PPh 3 )] 4 yielded a products [CuI(pySH)(PPh 3 ) 2 ] (py=C 5 H 4 N) and [CuI(dmpymSH)(PPh 3 ) 2 ] (dmpym=C 4 H(4,6‐Me 2 N 2 ); respectively. The molecular structure of complex [CuCl(dmpymSH)(PPh 3 ) 2 ].CH 3 CN ( 1 b ) has been determined through the single crystal X‐ray crystallography technique. All the synthesized complexes were fully characterized through various spectroscopic techniques (IR, 1 H, 13 C{ 1 H}, 31 P{ 1 H} NMR). The complexes 1 a , 1 b , 2 a and 2 b showed excellent catalytic activities for azide‐alkyne cycloaddition reaction in water as green solvent upto 90 % yield with 0.5 mol % of catalyst loading. Among all the synthesized complexes, compound [CuI(pySH)(PPh 3 ) 2 ] ( 2 a ) turned up as a better catalyst with 90 % yield, applying 0.5 mol % catalyst.

Isolation of Cyclic Aluminium Polysulfides by Stepwise Sulfurization

Abstract:Despite the notable progress in aluminium chalcogenides, their sulfur congeners have rarely been isolated under mild conditions owing to limited synthetic precursors and methods. Herein, facile isolation of diverse molecular aluminium sulfides is achievable, by the reaction of N-heterocyclic carbene-stabilized terphenyl dihydridoaluminium (1) with various thiation reagents. Different to the known dihydridoaluminium 1Tipp , 1 features balanced stability and reactivity at the Al center. It is this balance that enables the first monomeric aluminium hydride hydrogensulfide 2, the six-membered cyclic aluminium polysulfide 4 and the five-membered cyclic aluminium polysulfide 6 to be isolated, by reaction with various equivalents of elemental sulfur. Moreover, a rare aluminium heterocyclic sulfide with Al-S-P five-membered ring (7) was obtained in a controlled manner. All new compounds were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their structures were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract:The β-diketiminato aluminum-monohydroxide and -dihydroxide were reacted with tetrameric (CuMes)4 (Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) to prepare Cu(I) complexes bearing the Al-O-Cu moiety. All complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction of aluminum-monohydroxide LAlR(OH) (L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]2; Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; R = Me, Et) with (CuMes)4 afforded the Cu(I) alumoxane [LAl(R)OCu·MesCu]2 (R = Me, 1; Et, 2). Using the aluminum-dihydroxide LAl(OH)2 as the precursor, the dimeric [LAl(OH)OCu·MesCu]2 (3) was isolated, bearing one reactive OH group on each Al center. When the reaction of LAl(OH)2 with (CuMes)4 was carried out at 70 °C, the dimeric octanuclear Cu(I) compound [LAl(OCu·MesCu)2]2 (4) was formed, where two residual Mes groups are located at the neighboring position on each of the two (OCu·MesCu)2 squares. Compound 4 can be alternatively obtained by reacting 3 with 1 equiv of (CuMes)4 to demonstrate the stepwise assembly of the Cu(I) alumoxanes.
Dimeric Copper and Lithium Thiolates: Comparison of Copper Thiolates with Their Lithium Congeners

Abstract:The direct reactions of the large terphenyl thiols HSAriPr4 (AriPr4= -C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2) and HSAriPr6 (AriPr6= -C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2) with stoichiometric amounts of mesitylcopper(I) in THF at ca. 80 °C afforded the first well-characterized dimeric copper thiolato species {CuSAriPr4}2 (1) and {CuSAriPr6}2 (2) with elimination of mesitylene. The complexes 1 and 2 were characterized by NMR and electronic spectroscopy as well as by X-ray crystallography. They have dimeric Cu2S2 core structures in which the two copper atoms are bridged by the sulfurs from the thiolato ligands and feature short Cu--Cu distances near 2.4 Å as well as a weak copper-flanking aryl ring interaction from a terphenyl substituent. The structures of the planar Cu2S2 cores bear a resemblance to the CuA site in nitrous oxide reductase in which two cysteines also bridge two copper atoms. The related dimeric Li2S2 structural motif was also observed in the lithium congeners {LiSAriPr4}2 (3) and {LiSAriPr6}2 (4) which were synthesized directly from the thiols and n-BuLi in hexanes. However, despite the very similar effective ionic radii of the Li+ (0.59 Å) and Cu+ (0.60 Å) ions, the Li--Li structures display very much longer (by more than ca. 0.5 Å) separations than the corresponding Cu--Cu distances in 1 and 2, which may be due to weaker dispersion interactions.

Abstract:Four copper(II) complexes of bis(dialkyldithiocarbamate) [Cd(R2dtc)2] (R=Me, Et, Pr, i-Pr; dtc=dithiocarbamate) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and ESR spectra studies. Their equilibrium constants (K), determined by a UV–vis spectrometry in EtOH, were influenced by the alkyl groups in the following order: i-Pr>n-Pr≈Et>Me. The single crystal structures of complex [Cu2(R2dtc)4] have been determined using X-ray diffraction methods. The compounds [Cu2(Et2dtc)4] and [Cu2(Pr2dtc)4] are built of centrosymmetric neutral dimeric [Cu2(R2dtc)4] entities. The copper atom lies in a distorted square–pyramidal environment. The four equatorial donors are two bidentate chelate sulfur atoms from two dtc ligands. One of the sulfur atoms from the third dtc ligand acts as a bridging ligand occupying the apical position of the symmetry-related copper atom in the dimer structure, which is viewed as two edge-sharing distorted square–pyramids. The structure of [Cu2(i-Pr2dtc)4] is square planar with an exactly planar CuS4 unit and nearly planar NCS2 moieties. The Cu–S distances shows small decreases along the series n-Pr>Et>i-Pr, the biggest change being for the diisopropyl complex. The alkyl substituents at the nitrogen atom affect their coordination number and Cu⋯Cu distance. In the solid, [Cu2(n-Pr2dtc)4] has the shortest Cu⋯Cu distance and [Cu(i-Pr2dtc)2] has the longest one.
Sulfide‐Induced Dimerization Versus Demetallation of Tricopper(I) Clusters Protected by Tris‐Thiolato Metalloligands

Abstract:Here, we report the reactivity of copper(I) clusters toward sulfide ions; these sulfide copper(I) clusters have attracted much attention due to their relevance to biologically active centers and their fascinating structural and photophysical properties. Treatment of the CuI3RhIII2 pentanuclear complex, [Cu3{Rh(aet)3}2]3+ (aet = 2‐aminoethanethiolate), in which a {CuI3}3+ cluster moiety is bound by two fac‐[Rh(aet)3] metalloligands, with NaSH in water produced the CuI6RhIII4 decanuclear complex, [Cu6S{Rh(aet)3}4]4+, accompanied by the dimerization of [Cu3{Rh(aet)3}2]3+ and the incorporation of a sulfide ion at the center. While similar treatment using the analogous CuI3IrIII2 complex with fac‐[Ir(aet)3] metalloligands, [Cu3{Ir(aet)3}2]3+, produced the isostructural CuI6IrIII4 decanuclear complex, [Cu6S{Ir(aet)3}4]4+, the use of the CuI3RhIII2 complex with fac‐[Rh(apt)3] metalloligands, [Cu3{Rh(apt)3}2]3+ (apt = 3‐aminopropanethiolate), resulted in the removal of one of the three CuI atoms from {CuI3}3+ to afford the CuI2RhIII2 tetranuclear complex, [Cu2{Rh(apt)3}2]2+.

Synthesis and Characterization of Diacylthiourea and Diacylthioureato Cu(I) Complexes

Abstract:A series of six disubstituted diacylthioureas 1,3‐ and 1,4‐C6H4[C(O)NHC(S)NR1R2]2 (L1‐6) were synthesized with varied Rn substituents (R1 = R2 = Et for L1‐2; R1 = R2 = Bn for L3‐4; R1 = iPr and R2 = Ph for L5 (1) and L6 (2)). Treatment of Ln with Cu(I) halide precursors CuX(PPh3)3 (X = Cl, Br, I) produced the discrete binuclear adducts Ln[CuX(PPh3)2]2 (3‐11 and 14‐16; n = 1‐3 and 6) by binding to Cu(I) centres via the monodentate‐S mode. In contrast, L4 and L5 yielded only the chloride products of binuclear L4[CuCl(PPh3)2]2 (12) and mononuclear L5CuCl(PPh3)2 (13), respectively, with one S arm in the latter remaining dangling, while bromide or iodide analogues were not available for L4 and L5, possibly due to the steric hindrance imposed by larger halide anions or bulky isopropyl substituents. The reactions of Ln with nitrate [Cu(NO3)(PPh3)2]led to the double‐deprotonation of ligand protons to generate dianions Ln' (1,3‐/1,4‐C6H4[C(O)NC(S)NR1R2]22‐) and led to the consequent formation of binuclear diacylthioureato Cu(I) complexes Ln'[Cu(PPh3)2]2 (n=1 (17), 2 (18), 4 (19)) via the κ‐O,S‐bidentate mode. The obtained ligands and complexes were spectroscopically and structurally characterized. These Cu(I) products (3‐19) were experimentally used as catalysts for the oxidation of 1‐phenylethanol.

Copper Imidazolin-imine Coordination Compounds as Precursors for a Cu/Al Complex

Abstract:The reactions of [(CF3SO3Cu)2(C6H6)] with the sterically hindered imidazolin-2-imine ligands DippImTMS (1,3-Bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-(trimethylsilylimino)imidazoline) or DippImH (1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imidazolin-2-imine) lead to the formation of the linear copper(I) complexes [Cu(DippImTMS)(OTf)] (1) and [Cu(DippImH)2][OTf] (2), respectively. The triflate counteranion in 2 can be easily exchanged to the weakly coordinating [BArF] giving [Cu(DippImH)2][BArF] (3) (BArF = tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate). Substitution of the N-heterocyclic imine (NHI) ligand in 3 by AlCp* (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) gives the tetrahedral [Cu(AlCp*)4][BArF] (5). The reaction between lithiated imidazolin-2-iminate DippImLi and CuCl results in the triangular cluster [Cu3(DippIm)2Cl] (4). All products have been fully characterized by 1H- and 13C NMR, mass spectrometry, as well as SC-XRD.

Abstract:The treatment of a slurry of an equimolar mixture of [Sn(edt)(2)] (edt = ethane-1,2- dithiolate) and [Et(4)N]Cl.xH(2)O with CuI in the presence of PPh(3) gave a tetranuclear compound, [Sn(edt)(2)Cl(mu-I)(mu(3)-I)(CuPPh(3))(3)] (1), which consists of a rectangular-pyramidal [Sn(edt)(2)Cl](-) moiety ligated by three [Cu(PPh(3))](+) fragments via the sulfur atoms of the edt(2-) ligands. The treatment of a slurry of [Sn(edt)(2)] and excess [Et(4)N]Br with [Cu(MeCN)(4)][PF(6)] in the presence of PPh(3) afforded a pentanuclear compound, [Sn(edt)(2)(mu-Br)(2)(mu(3)-Br)(2)(CuPPh(3))(4)] (2), which comprises two [(CuPPh(3))(2)(mu-Br)](+) fragments symmetrically ligating an octahedral trans-[Sn(edt)(2)Br(2)](2-) moiety via the sulfur and bromide atoms. Reaction of [Sn(edt)(2)] with [Cu(MeCN)(4)][PF(6)] and PPh(3) in a mixed MeCN/CH(2)Cl(2) solution yielded a novel octanuclear compound, [{Sn(edt)(2)}(3)(mu-OH)(3)Cu(5)(PPh(3))(8)][PF(6)](2) (3), which may be described as a triangular [{Sn(edt)(2)}(3)(mu-OH)(3)](3-) core chelated by three [Cu(PPh(3))(2)](+) species and capped by two [Cu(PPh(3))](+) species. The luminescent properties of compounds 1, 2, and 3 were investigated in a CH(2)Cl(2) solution at room temperature. Upon excitation at lambda > 360 nm, these compounds are luminescent in CH(2)Cl(2) solution with emissions having maxima at 422, 515, and 494 nm, respectively.
Synthesis of ternary copper antimony sulfide via solventless thermolysis or aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition using metal dithiocarbamates

Abstract:Abstract Copper antimony sulfide (Cu-Sb-S) has recently been proposed as an attractive alternative photovoltaic material due to the earth-abundant and non-toxic nature of the elements, high absorption coefficients and band gaps commensurate with efficient harvesting of solar photonic flux across multiple phases of Cu-Sb-S. These materials are therefore highly desirable and sustainable and scalable deposition techniques to produce them are of interest. In this paper, we demonstrate two facile, low-temperature and inexpensive techniques (solventless thermolysis and aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD)) for the preparation of binary digenite (Cu 1.8 S), chalcocite (Cu 2 S) and stibnite (Sb 2 S 3 ) and several phases of ternary copper-antimony-sulfide (Cu 2x Sb 2(1−x) S y , where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1). It was found that by utilising these different techniques and varying the ratio of Cu:Sb, pure phases of ternary chalcostibite (CuSbS 2 ), fematinite (Cu 3 SbS 4 ) and tetrahedrite (Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 ) can be achieved. Two single-source precursors were investigated for this purpose, namely the diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) complexes of copper and antimony Cu(DTC) 2 and Sb(DTC) 3 . These were decomposed both individually (to produce binary materials) and combined (to produce ternary materials) at different ratios. From the solventless thermolysis and AACVD methods, either particulate or thin film material was formed, respectively. These materials were then characterised by powder XRD, SEM, EDX and Raman spectroscopies to determine the crystalline phase, material morphology and uniformity of elemental composition. This analysis demonstrated that as the Cu-content increases, the phase of the ternary material changes from chalcostibite (CuSbS 2 ) and fematinite (Cu 3 SbS 4 ) at a low Cu:Sb ratio to tetrahedrite (Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 ) at a high Cu:Sb ratio.

Abstract:We developed convenient synthetic routes for the preparation of para-benzene disulfonic acid (H(2)BDS) and its tetrachloro (H(2)BDSCl(4)) and tetrafluoro (H(2)BDSF(4)) derivatives. The reaction of these acids with zinc nitrate in DMF led to single crystals of [Zn(BDS)(DMF)(2)] (triclinic, P ̄1[combining macron], Z=2, a=976.62(4), b=986.85(4), c=1014.40(4), α=69.106(2)°, β=68.746(2)°, γ=86.295(2)°, wR(2)=0.0627), [Zn(BDSCl(4))(DMF)(4)] (triclinic, P ̄1[combining macron], Z=1, a=831.5(1), b=905.2(1), c=989.6(1), α=90.44(2)°, β=91.41 (2)°, γ=106.72(2)°, wR(2)=0.0635), and [Zn(BDSF(4))(DMF)(4)] (monoclinic, P2(1)/c, Z=2, a=889.01(3), b=968.91(3), c=1633.07(5) pm, β=106.524(2)°, wR(2)=0.0948). While [Zn(BDS)(DMF)(2)] exhibits a layer structure, the disulfonate linkers connect the zinc ions into chains in the crystal structures of [Zn(BDSCl(4))(DMF)(4)] and [Zn(BDSF(4))(DMF)(4)]. Thermoanalytical investigations revealed that desolvation of the compounds occurs in a temperature range between 100 and 200 °C. The solvent free sulfonates show remarkably high stabilities, [Zn(BDS)(DMF)(2)] is stable up to nearly 600 °C. The halogenated acids were also used to prepare copper salts from aqueous solutions and Cu(2)(OH)(2)(CO(3)) (malachite) as a copper source. The crystal structure of [Cu(H(2)O)(6)](BDSF(4)) (triclinic, P ̄1[combining macron], Z=1, a=510.45(2), b=744.68(3), c=1077.77(4) pm, α=85.627 (2)°, β=77.449 (2)°, γ=76.015 (2)°) exhibits complex cations and uncoordinated sulfonate anions, while in [Cu(BDSCl(4))(H(2)O)(4)] (orthorhombic, Pnma, Z=4, a=721.27(2), b=2147.81(6), c=979.42(3) pm) the Cu(2+) ions are linked to infinite chains in the crystal structure. The most interesting structural feature of [Cu(BDSCl(4))(H(2)O)(4)] is the significant deviation from planarity of the disulfonate dianion. Theoretical investigations revealed that a boat conformation is favoured due to steric hindrance in cases where a syn coordination of the sulfonate groups occurs. The thermal behaviour of the copper compounds was also investigated by DTA/TG measurements and X-ray powder diffraction.

Abstract:alpha -Substitueed alkenylzirconocenes, Cp2Zr(OSiMe3){C(R) = C(R)CH2CH = CH2} (R = Pr (1a); R = Ph (Ic)), which were prepared in situ by the reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with (allyloxy)trimethylsilane, reacted with R ' 2PCl in the presence of CuCl to give the Cu(I) complexes [mu -Cl)Cu(PR ' C-2(R) = C(R)CH2CH = CH2)](2) (R = Pr, R ' = Ph (2a); R = Pr, R ' = i-Pr (2b); R = Ph. R ' = i-Pr (2c)) with tethered olefin-phosphine ligands bidentately coordinating to copper(I) in good to high yields. The molecular structures of 2a and 2c were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract:A three distinct copper cluster complexes (A-C) containing Cu-O ligated Schiff-base ligands were synthesized and bonding was investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. These complexes effectively catalyze the C-S cross coupling reaction of less reactive aliphatic thiols to synthesize thioether derivatives. This coupling reaction also tolerates well and compatible with aryl thiols. The peculiar C(sp2)-SC(sp3) bond formation could distinctly took place with high efficiency in low catalyst loading of copper cluster complex catalysts. The present report describes an alternative protocol to construct an active copper cluster complex from readily accessible cheap and efficient ligands. These complexes are air stable, practical, ease to handle and execute C-S coupling reactions with good yields.

Abstract:Atomically precise copper chalcogenide nanoclusters are an exceptionally diverse class of nanomaterials with potential applications in chemiluminescence, sensing, and catalysis. However, most previously reported nanoclusters have been characterized exclusively in the solid state, leaving open questions as to their stability and function in solution. In this work, we report the first detailed solution-phase investigation of speciation, electrochemistry, and decomposition of atomically precise [Cu12S6] supported by a series of mono- and ditopic alkyldiphenylphosphines PPh2R (R = Et, -(CH2)5-, -(CH2)8-). While electronically identical, this series of ligands features monotopic and ditopic binding modes spanning zero, one, or three axes of the [Cu12S6] core, facilitating an in-depth examination of the impact of phosphine binding topology on solution behaviour. We find that binding topology dictates the extent of speciation, with complete solution stability being afforded through use of the longer octane chelate dppo (1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)octane). Thus, the 1H and DOSY NMR spectra of [Cu12S6(dppo)4] indicate a rigid, stereochemically locked ligand configuration in which substantial stabilizing CH---S interactions are present. Meanwhile, electrochemical analysis coupled with DFT calculations indicates that the [Cu12S6] core undergoes a quasireversible one-electron oxidation at –0.50 V vs Fc0/+. In contrast, prolonged air exposure or treatment with chemical oxidants results in cluster degradation with formation of phosphine sulfide byproducts. This work demonstrates both progress and challenges in controlling the solution-phase behaviour and redox chemistry of phosphine-supported copper chalcogenide nanoclusters.

Abstract:Two diiron ethane-1,2-dithiolate complexes were prepared and structurally characterized. Reactions of the parent complex [Fe2(CO)6(μ-SCH2CH2S)] (1) with tris(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)phosphine or triethyl phosphite and Me3NO·2H2O as the oxidative reagent resulted in the formation of the phosphine-substituted analog [Fe2(CO)5{P(4-C6H4CF3)3}(μ-SCH2CH2S)] (2) and phosphite-substituted analogue [Fe2(CO)5{P(OCH2CH3)3}(μ-SCH2CH2S)] (3) in 84% and 78% yields, respectively. The new complexes 2 and 3 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of both complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry.
