Abstract:Purpose. The purpose of this study is to describe a simple method of measuring anterior segment lesions from digital slit lamp images and confirm reliability of the technique. Methods. Ten reference photos were taken of a PD ruler, refocusing on the ruler for each photo. Using Adobe Photoshop, the number of pixels per millimeter squared (area) and 1 mm (linear) were recorded for each photo. An Excel spreadsheet was set up to convert pixels to millimeters and millimeters squared. Interrater reliability was determined by two observers who independently calculated the area of 69 epithelial defects. A Bland and Altman plot was used to demonstrate the agreement between the two doctors. Results. Interrater reliability was excellent as measured by an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2,1) = 0.99. From the Bland and Altman plot it was determined that in 95% of cases, the area of the epithelial defect measured by provider 2 may be as much as 1.17 mm2 less than or 1.09 mm2 greater than that measured by provider 1. Conclusion. This simple method, which allows accurate measurements from digital images using common off-the-shelf software, is a valuable tool for clinical documentation as well as for research purposes.
A study of indoor radon levels in rural dwellings of Ezine (Canakkale, Turkey) using solid-state nuclear track detectors

Abstract:Indoor radon activity level and radon effective dose (ED) rate have been carried out in the rural dwellings of Ezine (Canakkale) during the summer season using Radosys-2000, a complete set suitable to radon concentration measurements with CR-39 plastic alpha track detectors. The range of radon concentration varied between 9 and 300 Bq m(-3), with an average of 67.9 (39.9 SD) Bq m(-3). Assuming an indoor occupancy factor of 0.8 and 0.4 for the equilibrium factor of radon indoors, it has been found that the 222Rn ED rate in the dwellings studied ranges from 0.4 to 5.2 mSv y(-1), with an average value of 1.7 (1.0) mSv y(-1). There is a possibility that low radon concentrations exist indoors during the summer season in the study area because of relatively high ventilation rates in the dwellings. A winter survey will be needed for future estimation of the annual ED.

Abstract:In the city centre of Isparta, located in the southwestern part of Türkiye, indoor radon concentrations and gamma dose rate levels were observed above the world and country averages. For this reason, the determination of the natural radioactivity levels in soil samples of Isparta province is of great interest. In the present study, the activity concentrations of radionuclides (namely 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K and 137 Cs) were investigated in the soil samples collected from 72 different points including the city centre and 12 towns of Isparta by using a gamma spectrometer with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K and 137 Cs radionuclides in the samples were found in the range of 4.08 ± 0.39–69.84 ± 1.43 Bqkg −1 , 2.63 ± 0.28–65.66 ± 1.41 Bqkg −1 , 44.48 ± 3.17–452.38 ± 9.65 Bqkg −1 and 0.28 ± 0.18–19.10 ± 0.61 Bqkg −1 respectively. The averages of all the measurements were determined as 15.69 ± 0.72 Bqkg −1 for 226 Ra, 15.40 ± 0.78 Bqkg −1 for 232 Th, 210.60 ± 6.22 Bqkg −1 for 40 K and 3.44 ± 0.31 Bqkg −1 for 137 Cs. Although these values were below the country and world averages, it was revealed that the 226 Ra and 232 Th activity concentrations in the city centre exceeded the national and world averages. In addition, radiological risk maps of the analysed radionuclides were produced for the first time, covering all towns within the Isparta province. To evaluate the radiological hazards resulting from natural radionuclides, external hazard index ( H ex ), absorbed dose rate ( D ), annual effective dose equivalent ( AEDE ), male and female lifetime cancer risk ( LCR ) values were also calculated. The outcomes of this study revealed that all the radiological parameter averages for Isparta were lower than the world and country averages but the calculation results for the city centre displayed the opposite of this situation except for the external hazard index.

Abstract:The present study aims to obtain the baseline data on natural and fallout radioactivity and to evaluate radiation hazards caused by ionizing radiation emitted from 226Ra, 232Th, 222Rn, 40K and 137Cs in surface soil samples collected from Mersin province and Akkuyu nuclear power plant region. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs were measured using a gamma spectrometer with HPGe detector. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs varied from 14.1 ± 0.7 to 65.4 ± 2.9, 12.0 ± 0.8–51.7 ± 2.1, 172.2 ± 15.8–511.1 ± 37.8 and <MDA to 86.2 ± 1.4 Bq kg−1, respectively. The average concentrations of radon in soil and air were estimated as 23.9 kBq m−3 and 76 Bq m−3. The radiological parameters such as absorbed gamma dose rate in outdoor air (DRout), annual effective dose rate from external exposure (EExt), annual effective dose rate from inhalation of radon (EInh) and lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) were calculated to evaluate radiological hazards. The average values of DRout, EExt, EInh and LTCR were found to be 51 nGy h−1, 62 μSv year−1, 715 μSv year−1 and 2.2 × 10−4, respectively.

The correlation between indoor and soil gas radon concentrations in Kiraz district, İzmir

Abstract:All humans are exposed to radon, the primary source of natural radiation, which can harm people due to natural processes rather than human activity. Thus, it is of significant importance to determine the levels of radon in indoor, soil gas, water, and outdoors. Radon concentration (CRn) was measured in Kiraz district, İzmir, and the correlation between the indoor and soil gas CRn values was investigated. The indoor CRn values measured in 40 randomly selected dwellings in Kiraz exhibited a wide range from 19.50 ± 2.50 to 204.70 ± 8.00 Bq m-3 with an average value of 61.11 ± 4.23 Bq m-3. The measured indoor CRn values were compared to the reference levels in the world to help control radon in the dwellings. Indoor CRn values were lower than the ICRP reference level of 300 Bq m-3 in all of the dwellings studied. Furthermore, in 34 dwellings (representing 85% of the total number of dwellings studied), indoor CRn values were lower than the WHO reference level of 100 Bq m-3. Health hazard indices, namely annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), were also calculated for each dwelling and compared with internationally acceptable levels to estimate the risk to human health. The AED values varied from 0.49 ± 0.06 to 5.16 ± 0.20 mSv y-1 with an average value of 1.54 ± 0.11 mSv y-1, which exceeds the world average of 1.15 mSv y-1 as reported by UNSCEAR. The ELCR values ranged from 2.05 ± 0.26 × 10-3 to 21.55 ± 0.84 × 10-3 with an average value of 6.43 ± 0.44 × 10-3, exceeding the world average of 0.29 × 10-3 as reported by UNSCEAR. The soil gas CRn values measured exhibited a wide variation ranging from 129.25 ± 6.38 Bq m-3 to 6172.64 ± 44.06 Bq m-3 with an average value of 1291.79 ± 18.70 Bq m-3. The soil gas CRn values were less than 10,000 Bq m-3; hence, the research area is categorized as "low radon risk areas" according to Sweden Criteria, and so no special constructions are required in the studied area. When soil gas CRn values were compared to indoor CRn values, no linear relationship was found between the CRn values. However, a strong positive linear correlation was found between indoor and soil gas CRn values less than 200 Bq m-3 and 2500 Bq m-3, respectively.

Abstract:Purpose: Radon (222Rn) and its decay products clinging to airborne particles settle in the lungs when inhaled and can lead to lung cancer. The main source of 222Rn is rocks and soil in the Earth's crust and causes indoor radon exposure when local geological material is used as a building material. Accordingly, the primary objective of the study is to determine the radon activity concentrations (CRn) and exhalation rates (EA and EM) from different rock types taken from the Aliağa-İzmir region. The study also estimates the annual effective dose (AED) and the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR). Material and Methods: For the measurement of the CRn, EA, and EM in different rock types, the can technique with LR-115 detector was utilized. The AED and the ELCR were estimated using the CRn in the samples. Results: It was found that the CRn, EA, EM, AED, and ELCR values for the examined rock samples were ranged between 66±4 and 1711±13 Bq m−3, 51±3 and 1309±10 mBq m-2 h-1, 2.68±0.18 and 64.02±0.47 mBq kg-1 h-1, 1.67 and 43.16 mSv y−1, and 0.006 and 0.151, respectively. Conclusion: The higher radiological risks in terms of radon exposure were related to the rocks of volcanic origin.

Abstract:In the present study, radon concentrations were measured in soil samples collected from different sites in Kadhimiya district center in Baghdad, Iraq. A CR-39 passive nuclear track detectors was used to assess the radon concentrations through the sealed can technique. This study include an assessment of various radiation hazard parameters in 25 soil samples, including the annual effective dose, excess lifetime cancer risk, radium activity, uranium concentration, as well as surface and mass exhalation rates. The mean values were found to be 282.29 ± 3.83 Bq m −3 for radon concentration, 7.12 ± 0.096 mSv y −1 for annual effective dose, 24.93 for excess lifetime cancer risk, 0.39 ± 0.002 Bq kg −1 for radium activity, 135.75 ± 1.84 mBq m −2 h −1 for surface exhalation rate, 3.14 ± 0.04 mBq kg −1 h −1 for mass exhalation rate, and 5.91 ± 0.079 PPb for uranium concentration. Consequently, the mean radon concentration exceeded the suggested limits, typically ranging between 200 and 600 Bq m −3 , and the annual effective dose exceeded the recommended threshold of 1 mSv y −1 . However, the radium content was below the recommended limit of 30 Bq kg −1 . A significant direct correlation was observed between the radium concentration and both the surface and mass exhalation rates. It is recommended to expand this study to measure radon and thoron gas concentrations within buildings of the study area to enhance the understanding of indoor exposure risks. Additionally, it would be beneficial to estimate the concentrations of other radionuclides, such as 232 Th and 40 K, as well as the major cations and anions in the soil to elucidate their potential impact on radon levels. Further actions to control radon exposure in the community to prevent lung cancer is important.

Abstract:Radon exposure in schools is different from that in dwellings because the residence pattern is very different each other. So, when effective dose is calculated in schools, different approach should be considered from in dwellings. The aim of this study was to estimate actual effective dose due to inhaled radon considering the residence time in schools. It could help avoid overestimation when effective dose is calculated in schools. The range of radon concentration in 376 schools was 18.1-2810 Bq m-3 and that of annual effective dose was estimated 0.0902-8.92 mSv y-1 considering the residence time in spring and autumn semesters.

Abstract:The consumption of bottled natural mineral water has become more popular in Turkey due to the faith about the helpful medicinal and therapeutic impacts of mineral waters including various dissolved minerals. However, mineral water derived from groundwater contains natural radioactive radon gas which is one of the important sources of natural radiation. In this study, the activity levels of radon in forty-nine bottled natural plain and fruit-flavoured mineral water samples of twenty-two commercially brands sold in Turkish markets were determined using an active radon gas monitoring system. The pH, conductivity, salinity, and total dissolved solids of mineral water samples were also measured using standard laboratory methods. The total annual effective dose due to ingestion and inhalation of radon in mineral water samples was estimated for infants, children, and adults to assess the health risk caused by internal exposure. The activity concentrations of radon measured in mineral water samples varied from 30.6 to 57.6 mBq L−1 with an average of 43.1 ± 6.1 mBq L−1. The average total annual effective dose was found as 0.42, 0.26 and 0.36 µSv for infants, children and adults, respectively. All measured radon concentrations and estimated annual effective dose values are within the within recommended limits by the WHO and European Union for drinking water. It can be concluded that the effective radiation dose from the radon in bottled natural mineral water samples investigated is very low and creates a negligible health risk for the public.

Determination of natural radioactivity by gross alpha and beta measurements in ground water samples

Abstract:In this study, the activity concentrations of the gross α and β in ground water samples collected from the different drilled wells in Nevşehir province were measured to assess annual effective dose due to the ingestion of the water samples. Nevşehir province is one of the major cities of Cappadocia Region which is a popular tourist destination as it has many areas with unique geological, historic, and cultural features. Sampling and measurements were carried out in the autumn of 2011 and the spring of 2012. The values of the activity concentrations of the gross α and β measured in the water samples ranged from 80 to 380 mBq L(-1) with a mean of 192 mBq L(-1) and 120-3470 mBq L(-1) with a mean of 579 mBq L(-1) respectively. All values of the gross α were lower than the limit value of 500 mBq L(-1) while two ground water samples were found to have gross β activity concentrations of greater than 1000 mBq L(-1). Therefore two water samples were the subject of further radioisotope-specific analysis. The obtained result indicated that the elevated activity concentrations of the gross β in these water samples are dominated by (40)K activity. Annual effective doses ranged from 0.04 to 0.20 mSv y(-1).

Abstract:Radon gas has long been connected with human public health risks. Building materials, one of the biggest producers of this gas in enclosed areas, are thought to be among the most important channels of this gas. The radon concentration, radon exhalation rate as well as the annual effective dose for 52 building material samples (granite, ceramic, marble, mosaic, building stones, gypsum, gypsum board, block, lightweight block, sand, aggregate, limestone, concrete, siporex, cement, white cement, brick and red brick) in Erbil city were assessed by applying a radon detection system consisting of a length-pipeline approach using CR-39 SSNTDs as an inactive mode and an electronic RAD7 solid-state detector as a can way. The outcomes of passive and active approaches were found to be very comparable. The highest values of radon exhalation rate, radon concentration and indoor yearly effective dosage were recorded, respectively, as 0.546 ± 0.032 Bq.m −2 .h −1 , 290.2 ± 17 Bq.m −3 and 7.32 ± 0.43 mSv.y −1 for granite samples, while the lowest values were 0.057 ± 0.003 Bq.m −2 .h −1 , 30.2 ± 1.8 Bq.m −3 and 0.76 ± 0.05 mSv.y −1 for the gypsum board samples. The results also revealed that the radon exhalation rate was lower than the global average of 57.600 Bq.m −2 .h −1 , and the indoor annual effective dose for all samples except for granite samples was less than the allowed threshold of 1–5 mSv.y −1 . The annual effective dose for all samples was above the average world value of 1.2 mSv.y −1 reported by UNSCEAR and WHO except for gypsum board samples. The radon concentrations in granite samples were within the ICRP's suggested activity ranges of 200 to 600 Bq.m −3 .
The natural radioactivity in drinking water by gross alpha and beta measurements and radiological quality assessment

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the radiological quality of drinking waters consumed in Nevşehir province which is the most important tourism destination of the Cappadocia region. The activity concentration of gross α- and β-emitting from natural radionuclides ( 238 U, 234 U, 230 Th, 226 Ra, 210 Po, 232 Th and 210 Pb, 228 Ra and 40 K) in 21 tap water samples supplied by municipal pipelines were analyzed by using a gas proportional α/β counter. The average activity concentrations of the gross α and gross β in tap water samples were found as 88 ± 10 mBq L −1 and 305 ± 32 mBq L −1 , respectively. The average natural activity concentrations of α- and β-emitting radionuclides in tap water samples are below the limit values recommended by the Turkish regulation and WHO. For all samples, except for one sample, the gross β activity concentrations are higher than the corresponding gross α concentrations. The average annual effective radiation dose (AERD) due to the ingestion of these water samples was estimated to be 43, 60 and 124 μSv year −1 for infants, children, and adults, respectively. The average of AERD estimated for adults is 24 % higher than the dose limit of 100 μSv year −1 . The activity concentration results reveal that tap water samples are acceptable for human consumption in accordance with the Turkish regulation and WHO recommendations for drinking water.

Abstract:A comparison of the DNase I digestion products of the 32P-5'-end-labeled pachytene nucleosome core particles (containing histones H2A, TH2A, X2, H2B, TH2B, H3, and H4) and liver nucleosome core particles (containing somatic histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) revealed that the cleavage sites that are 30, 40, and 110 nucleotides away from the 5'-end are significantly more accessible in the pachytene core particles than in the liver core particles. These cleavage sites correspond to the region wherein H2B interacts with the nucleosome core DNA. These results, therefore, suggest that the histone-DNA interaction at these sites in the pachytene core particles is weaker, possibly because of the presence of the histone variant TH2B interacting at similar topological positions in the nucleosome core as that of its somatic counterpart H2B. Such a loosened structure may also be maintained even in the native pachytene chromatin since micrococcal nuclease digestion of pachytene nuclei resulted in a higher ratio of subnucleosomes (SN4 + SN7) to mononucleosomes than that observed in liver chromatin.

Abstract:The strategy for controlling the existence of radionuclides in drinking water depends upon an individual dose criterion (IDC) of 0.1 mSv/y, which represents a very low level of risk that is not expected to cause any identified adverse health effects. Radon gas, considered a carcinogenic radionuclide, can dissolve and accumulate in drinking water. Non-alcoholic carbonated beverages (NACBs), which mainly contain drinking water, phosphoric acid, citric acid, caffeine, and sugar, represent one of the most consumed groups worldwide and in Türkiye. In this study, the radon activity concentration and some physicochemical characteristics of 45 NACB samples from 24 most preferred commercial brands in Türkiye were determined to assess the radiological health risk associated with the ingestion of these samples. Radon activity concentrations measured in NACB samples using the AlphaGUARD radon analyzer ranged from 22.8 ± 0.7 to 54.9 ± 1.7 mBq/L. The pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, and brix values in NACB samples ranged from 2.31 to 7.29, 401 to 3281 μSv/cm, 355 to 2453 mg/L, and 0.10 to 12.95%, respectively. Total (ingestion and inhalation) annual effective doses and the corresponding excess lifetime cancer risks estimated for adults to assess the radiological health risk are significantly below the IDC and advised safety limit (10 −3 ), respectively.

Abstract:The study of indoor pollutants and radioactive nuclides imposes importance on human health as we spend most of our time indoors. Out of all the natural radioactive elements, Radon-222 and Radon220 are present in large abundance indoors. Both are radioactive and decay to various short-lived progenies by emitting high-energy alpha particles, so inhalation of such gases can harm the human body in various ways. In the present report, the concentration of Rn-222 and Rn-220 and its progenies are estimated from some dwellings of Samana city of Patiala district, Punjab. Pin-hole dosimeters with DRPS and DTPS were employed in 15 houses in the study area to measure indoor Rn-222 and Rn-220 concentrations. The concentration of Rn-222 ranges between 401.96 Bq/m 3 and 27.36 Bq/m 3 with mean value of 138.82 Bq/m3, and the concentration of Rn-220 varies from 222.2 Bq/ m 3 to 50 Bq/m 3 with the mean weight of 131.12 Bq/m 3 . The average inhalation dose was also calculated from the results and was found to have an average value of 2.19 mSv per year. The average weight of radon concentration was below the ICRP recommendation of 200-300 Bq/m 3 but the value is above these limits at some locations. Radon and thoron emission rates from soil samples near to the dwellings was also calculated.

Abstract:Due to increasing concern about environmental radiological protection, radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in surface soil samples collected from the North area of Cyprus have been determined using a high-resolution HPGe gamma-spectroscopy system. The range of activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in the soil samples varies from 49.7 ± 3 to 147.6 ± 17.2, 18.1 ± 1.5 to 93.9 ± 10.7, 103.5 ± 27 to 1468.6 ± 176.1 and 4.3 ± 0.1 to 15.9 ± 1.3 Bq kg−1, respectively. The obtained results and calculated values of radiation dose in the study area indicate that the relatively high background radioactivity levels.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: The radon isotopes are not as significant as ( 222 Rn) due to the decay of the natural radionuclides ( 235 U), ( 232 Th) and ( 238 U) due to their short half-life, at most. ( 222 Rn) can be classified as among the most harmful radioactive elements in the world. Material and method: In this analysis, the closed-can technique was used with solid-state nuclear track detectors (CR-39). After forty days of closed dosimeter buried in the soil of the garden, and ninety days from the closed position in the air of some dwellings were collected dosimeter and stripped of nuclear detectors impact of closed groups. For 8 hours, CR-39 detectors were chemically etched by (6.25 N) NaOH solution at 70°C and then registered within an optical microscope. Result: The levels of soil radon concentrations ranged from 28.44±0.58 to 479.76±2.43 Bq/m 3 with a mean value of 220.33±1.64 Bq/m 3 , while the concentration of radon in the air of certain dwellings varied from (1.95±0.27 to 46.82±0.75) Bq/m 3 with an average value of 21.51±0.54 Bq/m 3 . In comparison, the annual effective dose attributed to radon in soil ranged from 0.71±0.09 mSv/y to 12.10±0.38 mSv/y with an average value of 5.55±0.261 mSv/y, while the annual effective dose in air differed from (0.04±0.02 mSv/y) to (1.18±0.12 mSv/y) with an average value of (0.60±0.09 mSv/y). Conclusion: Neglecting the effects of other radon sources, the percentage share of the annual effective dose due to radon in soil measured in the air home, ranged from 0.005±0.001 to 0.453±0.074 with an average value of 0.130±0.040. Weak correlation between concentrations of radon in households and soil air. But roughly speaking, one can say that in soil air every 1000 Bq/m 3 and 1000 mSv/y contributes around 130 Bq/m 3 and 130 mSv/y in indoor air.

Abstract:According to the annual information packet “Radiation exposure doses to the population of the Russian Federation”, internal exposure to radon has been the main contributor to the annual dose for the population for many years. The paper presents results of a comparative assessment of doses and health risks for students (pupils) and employees of four educational institutions in the Kingiseppsky district of the Leningrad region due to exposure to radon and its progeny. Evaluation of the doses and risks was based on results of instant and long-term measurements of indoor radon concentrations published earlier. Individual annual effective doses to students (pupils) and employees due to exposure to radon while in the building of an educational institution, calculated on the basis of the results of instant measurements of radon EEC, ranged from 0.34 to 4.87 mSv/year for different institutions. However, calculation on the basis of the results of long-term measurements of radon concentration resulted in the dose values 2-4 times higher (from 1.40 to 14.79 mSv/year). These results do not reflect the real exposure scenario, since solid-state nuclear track detectors were exposed continuously, including nights, weekends and holidays (i.e. periods of actual absence of people in the buildings of the educational institutions). Based on the results of instant measurements of radon EEC, the contribution of radon and its progeny to the individual annual effective dose due to all natural sources of ionizing radiation to students (pupils) and employees was 59% (2.21 mSv/year) in the kindergarten of Opol’e, 61% (2.41 mSv/year) in the kindergarten of Falileevo, 82% (6.81 mSv/year) in the school of Falileevo, and 82% (7.11 mSv/year) in the school of Bol’shaya Pustomerzha. According to the classification established in sanitary rules and norms OSPORB 99/2010, the exposure of students and employees of the surveyed schools is classified as “increased” (from 5 to 10 mSv/year) when using the results of instant measurements of radon EEC, and is classified as “high” when using the results of long-term measurements of radon concentration (more than 10 mSv/year). The average individual lifetime risk of radon-induced lung cancer death (based on the results of instant measurements of radon EEC) for students (pupils) and employees was 3.8∙10 –4 in the kindergarten of Opol’e, 4.1∙10 –4 in the kindergarten of Falileevo, 1.2∙10 –3 in the school of Falileevo, and 1.2∙10 –3 in the school of Bol’shaya Pustomerzha. However, calculation on the basis of the results of long-term measurements of radon concentration resulted in the risk values from 1.5 to 2.4 times higher. The results obtained can be used to improve the method of monitoring of indoor radon concentration in existing operated public buildings in the Russian Federation, which in turn will make it possible to obtain correct values of doses and health risks.

Abstract:Abstract Radon is the most dangerous natural radioactive component affecting the human population, since it is a radioactive gas that results from the decomposition process of uranium deposits in soil, rocks, and water, and it is damaging both humans and the ecosystem. The radon concentrations and exhalation rate in soil samples from various locations were determined using a passive approach with a CR-39 (CR-39 is Columbia Resin #39; it is allyl diglycol carbonate C12H18O7) detector in Amiriya region in Baghdad Governorate. The average values of radon concentrations are ranged from 47.3 to 54.2 Bq·m−3. From the obtained results, we can conclude that the values of all studied locations are within the allowed levels. This research can be utilized to examine any variations in the radioactive baseline level in our homes and regions as well as to identify any hazardous radiation that could harm humans.

Abstract:The study assesses environmental background radiation from radon, thoron, and thoron decay products across distinct geological settings in the Garhwal Himalaya region by using RADUET, CR-39 plastic track detectors, and deposition-based thoron ( 220 Rn)progeny detectors. The measurements were conducted indoors throughout the winter, summer, and rainfall seasons during the year 2013. The annual inhalation doses from 220 Rn progenies ranged between 0.83 and 2.99 mSv y −1 , averaging 1.94 mSv y −1 . The annual effective dose (AED), reflecting biological radiation impact, varied from 0.58 to 2.78 mSv y −1 , with an average of 1.75 mSv y −1 .
