Abstract:Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) technology is a groundwater remediation method that relies on risk management and long-term monitoring. However, there are currently few studies that have investigated the effectiveness of natural attenuation as a remediation method for carbon tetrachloride-contaminated sites. The objective of this study is to quantify the natural attenuation of tetrachloride contamination in a polluted site in eastern China through a 2-year MNA. Carbon tetrachloride was found to be the most severely pollutant in the saturated aquifers of the site, with a range of 76,696 m2 (> 0.5 mg L−1). Results show that the concentration in the deep quaternary first aquifer (QFA) was higher than that in the shallow aquifer. The maximum concentration at the center of the pollution plume in the bedrock aquifer (BA) was reduced from the initial 35.3 to 10.7 mg L−1 after the implementation of MNA. The hypothesis that carbon tetrachloride was affected by the stratum fluctuation was verified through the field investigations. Specifically, the concentration of carbon tetrachloride decreased as the elevation of the monitoring point increased in the same aquifer generally. It was notable that the highly weathered bedrock fractured aquifer provided a large amount of relatively evenly fractured space for pollutant storage. Moreover, the heterogeneity of fracture network distribution also led to the appearance of the delamination characteristics of carbon tetrachloride. The diffusion of the carbon tetrachloride plume was mainly influenced with hydrodynamics and topographical fluctuations. The maximum concentration of carbon tetrachloride decreased with a rate of 48.84
Revealing chlorinated ethene transformation hotspots in a nitrate-impacted hyporheic zone

Abstract:Hyporheic zones are increasingly thought of as natural bioreactors, capable of transforming and attenuating groundwater pollutants present in diffuse baseflow. An underappreciated scenario in the understanding of contaminant fate in hyporheic zones is the interaction between point-source trichloroethene (TCE) plumes and ubiquitous, non-point source pollutants such as nitrate. This study aims to conceptualise critical biogeochemical gradients in the hyporheic zone which govern the export potential of these redox-sensitive pollutants from carbon-poor, oxic aquifers. Within the TCE plume discharge zone, discrete vertical profiling of the upper 100 cm of sediment pore water chemistry revealed an 80% increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and 20-60 cm thick hypoxic zones (<2 mg O2 L-1) within which most reactive transport was observed. A 33% reduction of nitrate concentrations coincided with elevated pore water nitrous oxide concentrations as well as the appearance of manganese and the TCE metabolite cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE). Elevated groundwater nitrate concentrations (>50 mg L-1) create a large stoichiometric demand for bioavailable DOC in discharging groundwater. With the benefit of a high-resolution grid of pore water samplers investigating the shallowest 30 cm of hypoxic groundwater flow paths, we identified DOC-rich hotspots associated with submerged vegetation (Ranunculus spp.), where low-energy metabolic processes such as mineral dissolution/reduction, methanogenesis and ammonification dominate. Using a chlorine index metric, we show that enhanced TCE to cDCE transformation takes place within these biogeochemical hotspots, highlighting their relevance for natural plume attenuation.

Abstract:A detailed field-scale investigation of processes controlling the architecture, persistence and dissolution of a 20 to 45year old trichloroethene (TCE) dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone located within a heterogeneous sand/gravel aquifer at a UK industrial site is presented. The source zone was partially enclosed by a 3-sided cell that allowed detailed longitudinal/fence transect monitoring along/across a controlled streamtube of flow induced by an extraction well positioned at the cell closed end. Integrated analysis of high-resolution DNAPL saturation (Sn) (from cores), dissolved-phase plume concentration (from multilevel samplers), tracer test and permeability datasets was undertaken. DNAPL architecture was determined from soil concentration data using partitioning calculations. DNAPL threshold soil concentrations and low Sn values calculated were sensitive to sorption assumptions. An outcome of this was the uncertainty in demarcation of secondary source zone diffused and sorbed mass that is distinct from trace amounts of low Sn DNAPL mass. The majority of source mass occurred within discrete lenses or pools of DNAPL associated with low permeability geological units. High residual saturation (Sn>10-20%) and pools (Sn>20%) together accounted for almost 40% of the DNAPL mass, but only 3% of the sampled source volume. High-saturation DNAPL lenses/pools were supported by lower permeability layers, but with DNAPL still primarily present within slightly more permeable overlying units. These lenses/pools exhibited approximately linearly declining Sn profiles with increasing elevation ascribed to preferential dissolution of the uppermost DNAPL. Bi-component partitioning calculations on soil samples confirmed that the dechlorination product cDCE (cis-dichloroethene) was accumulating in the TCE DNAPL. Estimated cDCE mole fractions in the DNAPL increased towards the DNAPL interface with the uppermost mole fraction of 0.04 comparable to literature laboratory data. DNAPL dissolution yielded heterogeneous dissolved-phase plumes of TCE and its dechlorination products that exhibited orders of magnitude local concentration variation. TCE solubility concentrations were relatively localised, but coincident with high saturation DNAPL lens source areas. Biotic dechlorination in the source zone area, however, caused cDCE to be the dominant dissolved-phase plume. The conservative tracer test usefully confirmed the continuity of a permeable gravel unit at depth through the source zone. Although this unit offered significant opportunity for DNAPL bypassing and decreased timeframes for dechlorination, it still transmitted a significant proportion of the contaminant flux. This was attributed to dissolution of DNAPL-mudstone aquitard associated sources at the base of the continuous gravel as well as contaminated groundwater from surrounding less permeable sand and gravel horizons draining into this permeable conduit. The cell extraction well provided an integrated metric of source zone dissolution yielding a mean concentration of around 45% TCE solubility (taking into account dechlorination) that was equivalent to a DNAPL mass removal rate of 0.4tonnes per annum over a 16m(2) cell cross sectional area of flow. This is a significant flux considering the source age and observed occurrence of much of the source mass within discrete lenses/pools. We advocate the need for further detailed field-scale studies on old DNAPL source zones that better resolve persistent pool/lens features and are of prolonged duration to assess the ageing of source zones. Such studies would further underpin the application of more surgical remediation technologies.
Current-use and legacy contaminants evidence dissolved organic matter transfer and dynamics across a fractured-rock groundwater recharge area

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities cause the release of vast amounts of contaminants into the environment which eventually reach even groundwater resources. With usually sparse regulatory monitoring of limited priority compounds, the large spectrum of contaminants, and the intricacies of intra- and inter-annual contaminant dynamics, such as the emergence and mobilisation of contaminants, are easily overlooked. Utilizing an 6-year record of untargeted LC-MS assessment of dissolved organic, we report the detection and tracing of selected environmental chemicals in the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory (central Germany), representing a model groundwater flow system under different land use. The insect repellent DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) and the coniferous resin acid 7-ODAA (7-oxodehydroabietic acids) show phases of seasonal dynamics in line with their expected periods of release. The legacy herbicides simazine, the triazine transformation product hydroxypropazine, and the flame retardant/plasticiser TPP (triphenyl phosphate) occurred episodically at various locations in the fractured sedimentary bedrock. Within the period of monitoring, extreme weather events (i.e., the severe 2018 drought) and extreme subsurface responses (i.e., 5-year groundwater highstand 2018) likely contributed to long-term organic matter dynamics, potentially causing re-emergence of legacy agrochemicals. This investigation points to the persistence and mobilisation of anthropogenic contaminants, and highlights the importance of long-term combined untargeted and targeted analysis of the groundwater dissolved organic matter for understanding subsurface ecosystems processes. The results add a note of caution for regulatory monitoring since also legacy contaminant levels may considerably vary over time.

Abstract:Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer. This strong impact of an urban effluent was revealed from the Br/Cl ratio, boron concentrations and δ 11 B isotopic signature of the groundwater in the direct vicinity of the infiltration point. With increasing distance from that point, dilution with groundwater rapidly attenuates the urban signal from these hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers. Nevertheless, a gadolinium anomaly, resulting from discharges of urban wastewater containing the contrast agents used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlights the presence of a wastewater plume further along the flow line, that comes with a series of organic molecules, including pharmaceutical residues. Monitoring persistent or reactive molecules along the plume provides a more detailed understanding of the transfer of CECs into groundwater bodies. This highlights the relevance of pharmaceutical compounds as co-tracers for WWTP plume delineation. The present multi-tracer approach for groundwater resource vulnerability towards CECs allows a more in-depth understanding of contaminant transfer and their fate in groundwater.

Abstract:The presence of ecotones in transition zones between geological strata (e.g. layers of gravel and sand interbedded with layers of silt in distal alluvial fan deposits) in aquifers plays a significant role in regulating the flux of matter and energy between compartments. Ecotones are characterised by steep physicochemical and biological gradients and considerable biological diversity. However, the link between organic pollutants and degradation potential in ecotones has scarcely been studied. The aim of this study is to relate the presence of ecotones with the dehalogenation of chloroethenes. A field site was selected where chloroethene contamination occurs in a granular aquifer with geological heterogeneities. The site is monitored by multilevel and conventional wells. Groundwater samples were analysed by chemical, isotopic, and molecular techniques. The main results were as follows: (1) two ecotones were characterised in the source area, one in the upper part of the aquifer and the second in the transition zone to the bottom aquitard, where the aged pool is located; (2) the ecotone located in the transition zone to the bottom aquitard has greater microbial diversity, due to higher geological heterogeneities; (3) both ecotones show the reductive dehalogenation of perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene; and (4) these ecotones are the main zones of the reductive dehalogenation of the pollutants, given the more reductive conditions at the centre of the plume. These findings suggest that ecotones are responsible for natural attenuation, where oxic conditions prevailed at the aquifer and bioremediation strategies could be applied more effectively in these zones to promote complete reductive dehalogenation.

Identification and quantification of diffuse groundwater pollution in a mineralised watershed

Abstract:A tracer injection and synoptic sampling experiment was carried out in a tributary catchment of the River Tywi (Carmarthenshire, Wales) during a very low streamflow event to locate and quantify sources of groundwater metal pollution from the abandoned Nantymwyn Pb mine. High resolution sampling at 22 stream locations and 12 inflows along a 2 km stretch of the Nant y Bai was deployed. This high spatial resolution sampling technique allowed point and diffuse sources of metal pollution to be identified enabling their contribution to the overall stream load to be quantified. It was found that the highest proportion of filtered Zn load originated from diffuse groundwater sources from the upper mine tailings (43%), and that the highest proportion of filtered Pb load originated from diffuse groundwater sources from the lower mine tailings (40%), with smaller inputs from a field on the River Tywi floodplain. These results demonstrate that tracer dilution and synoptic sampling is a powerful tool to locate and apportion diffuse sources of groundwater metal pollution in small, mineralised watersheds.

Abstract:A groundwater plume containing high concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds, mainly sulfonamides, barbiturates and ethyl urethane, in addition to chlorinated ethenes and benzene was investigated. The contamination originating from a former pharmaceutical industry discharges into a multilayered aquifer system and a downgradient stream. In this study, geological and hydrogeological data were integrated into a numerical flow model to examine identified trends using statistical approaches, including principle component analysis and hierarchal cluster analysis. A joint interpretation of the groundwater flow paths and contaminant concentrations in the different compartments (i.e. groundwater and hyporheic zone) provided insight on the transport processes of the different contaminant plumes to the stream. The analysis of historical groundwater concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds at the site suggested these compounds are slowly degrading The pharmaceutical compounds migrate in both a deep semi‐confined aquifer, as well as in the shallow unconfined aquifer, and enter the stream along a 2 km stretch. This contrasted with the chlorinated ethenes, which mainly discharge to the stream as a focused plume from the unconfined aquifer. The integrated approach developed here, combining groundwater flow modelling and statistical analyses of the contaminant concentration data collected in groundwater and the hyporheic zone, lead to an improved understanding of the observed distribution of contaminants in the unconfined and semi‐confined aquifers, and thus to their discharge to the stream. This approach is particularly relevant for large and long‐lasting contaminant sources and plumes, such as abandoned landfills and industrial production sites, where field investigations may be very expensive.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Pollutions on and within the underground poses risks for groundwater contamination and is a widespread global problem. Common remediation methods based on digging and removal can be expensive and have limitations, while in-situ remediation is an attractive alternative. However, there is a need to develop tools to monitor the effectiveness both in terms of the successful injection of remediation fluids but also the effectiveness of the treatment, i.e., degree of degradation/removal of the pollutants and possible metabolites. This paper presents a methodology for monitoring the changes following an in-situ remediation treatment of a site contaminated with chlorinated solvents. The methodology consists of two different methods, where Direct Current resistivity and time-domain Induced Polarization (DCIP) was used to acquire daily data and geochemical analyses on water samples were collected approximately every three months. The geophysical results provide insights on how the injected fluids are spreading and assist in acquiring a better understanding of the geological and hydrogeological system. On the other hand, the geochemical sampling enhances our knowledge about the hydrochemistry of the system and the concentration of the pollutants. Our research highlights the challenges of monitoring in-situ bioremediation experiments in complex environments and in cases where pollutants are situated in low hydraulic conductivity formations. The joint interpretation of the data shows the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to understand complex systems.

Abstract:The presence of long-screened wells with a surrounding sand pack can have a major effect on the redistribution of contaminants in groundwater, particularly when the wells are set in low-hydraulic conductivity aquifers. Such redistribution, or cross contamination, can occur through vertical flow and advective transport or by in-well mixing via multiple non-advective transport processes. A multi-method approach, including the use of single borehole dilution tracer (SBDT) logging, was undertaken to estimate vertical transport of trichloroethylene (TCE) in 8 discontinued remedial extraction wells, all constructed with long screens (100 ft, or 30.6 m long) and surrounding sand packs, at Site 25, Edwards Air Force Base, California. The site is within an enclosed drainage basin that is underlain primarily by quartz-monzonite-granitic rocks in various states of weathering. Prior to this study, little information was available on the depths of fracture zones intersecting the wellbores. Results indicate that because of in-well mixing processes, a potential redistribution of TCE of up to 9 g/d per well occurs as a consequence of leaving the wells inactive (unpumped) and unsealed, as measured by SBDT logging. Simulations of flow made with a generic model of the site show that if the wells were to be sealed with well liners, with the intent of reducing vertical TCE transport but the sand pack left intact, TCE transport decreases by 53% overall compared to leaving the wells unlined.

Simulating the fate and transport of TCE from groundwater to indoor air

Abstract:This work provides an exploratory analysis on the relative importance of various factors controlling the fate and transport of volatile organic contaminants (in this case, TCE) from a DNAPL source zone located below the water table and into the indoor air. The analysis is conducted using the multi-phase compositional model CompFlow Bio, with the base scenario problem geometry reminiscent of a field experiment conducted by Rivett [Rivett, M.O., (1995), Soil-gas signatures from volatile chlorinated solvents: Borden field experiments. Groundwater, 33(1), 84-98.] at the Borden aquifer where groundwater was observed to transport a contaminant plume a substantial distance without vertical mass transport of the contaminant across the capillary fringe and into the vadose zone. Results for the base scenario model indicate that the structure of the permeability field was largely responsible for deflecting the groundwater plume upward towards the capillary fringe, permitting aqueous phase diffusion to transport the TCE into the vadose zone. Alternative permeability realizations, generated as part of a Monte Carlo simulation process, at times deflected the groundwater plume downwards causing the extended thickness of the saturated zone to insulate the vadose zone from exposure to the TCE by upward diffusive transport. Comparison of attenuation coefficients calculated using the CompFlow Bio and Johnson and Ettinger [Johnson, P.C. and Ettinger, R.A., (1991), Heuristic model for predicting the intrusion rate of contaminant vapors into buildings. Environmental Science and Technology, 25, 1445-1452.] heuristic model exhibited fortuitous agreement for the base scenario problem geometry, with this agreement diverging for the alternative permeability realizations as well as when parameters such as the foundation slab fracture aperture, the indoor air pressure drop, the capillary fringe thickness, and the infiltration rate were varied over typical ranges.
New methodology to investigate potential contaminant mass fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface by combining integral pumping tests and streambed temperatures

Abstract:The spatial pattern and magnitude of mass fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface have important implications for the fate and transport of contaminants in river basins. Integral pumping tests were performed to quantify average concentrations of chlorinated benzenes in an unconfined aquifer partially penetrated by a stream. Four pumping wells were operated simultaneously for a time period of 5 days and sampled for contaminant concentrations. Streambed temperatures were mapped at multiple depths along a 60m long stream reach to identify the spatial patterns of groundwater discharge and to quantify water fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface. The combined interpretation of the results showed average potential contaminant mass fluxes from the aquifer to the stream of 272microgm(-2)d(-1) MCB and 71microgm(-2)d(-1) DCB, respectively. This methodology combines a large-scale assessment of aquifer contamination with a high-resolution survey of groundwater discharge zones to estimate contaminant mass fluxes between aquifer and stream.
Tracing pesticide dynamics: High resolution offers new insights to karst groundwater quality

Abstract:Generally, karst aquifers and springs are highly susceptible to contamination due to the high permeability and, therefore, groundwater flow velocities. The often thin soil cover, accompanied by dolines, can lead to fast infiltration of precipitation water loaded with mobilized contaminants such as pesticides and their transformation products. To date, continuous, temporally highly resolved in-situ monitoring to decipher concentration dynamics for a broad range of pesticides is missing. Therefore, a transportable HPLC-HRMS/MS system (MS2field) was positioned at two karst study sites in the Swiss Jura. Water samples were collected and analyzed for pesticides and their transformation products in-situ every 20 min for 6 weeks in 2021 and 8 weeks in 2022. During the spraying season in 2021, six rain events at site 1 and three at site 2 in 2022 were captured. Concurrently, the water quality parameters electrical conductivity, pH, nitrate, turbidity, and water level, were monitored continuously at high temporal resolution. Further, bacterial cell counts were monitored via online flow cytometry. In 2021, several pesticides and pesticide transformation products were detected in peak concentrations after rain events, of which metamitron showed the highest concentration of up to 1000 ng/L. In one rain event, the Swiss federal and EU drinking water limit of 100 ng/L was exceeded for up to 38 h. Compared with highly frequent MS2field samples collected every 20 min, 42-hours composite samples severely underestimated peak concentrations for all compounds, especially for labile ones. Therefore, it was demonstrated that exceedences of the regulatory limit would have been missed if just composite sampling would have been conducted. Peak concentrations of pesticides coincided with peaks in nitrate concentration and bacterial cell counts following rain events. The correlation analysis showed strong correlations between the three analyzed contaminants (pesticides, nitrate and bacteria), and the proxy parameters electrical conductivity, and pH. The investigation of a second spring revealed similar dynamics indicating that these can be expected in other karst aquifers as well.

Abstract:Analysis of groundwater TCE concentration data collected since 1987 reveals distinct, statistically significant changepoints in the rates of TCE attenuation. Piecewise regression analysis is a valuable tool in detecting changes in rates of groundwater contaminant attenuation. When a remedy is selected for groundwater contamination, the monitoring record is often evaluated to extract rate constants for attenuation of contaminants over time, and the rate constants are used to forecast a time when the concentrations will attain a clean‐up goal. These evaluations typically assume the rate constant does not change. Data from 11 monitoring wells at the former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) were evaluated to test whether this assumption was valid for this site. A previous evaluation at this site (based on data from 1987 through 1999) extracted rate constants that would bring the concentrations of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the 11 wells to the maximum contaminant level (MCL) on or before 2013. By 2020, only four wells had reached the MCL. Piecewise linear regressions were used to model the relationship between time elapsed and concentration of TCE for each well, and to identify any changepoints in the rate of attenuation over time. Each well had at least one changepoint with different TCE attenuation rates on either side of the changepoints. The slope of the most recent segment after the last changepoint provides the best information to forecast concentrations in the future. For four of the wells, that forecast indicated that concentrations of TCE would never reach the MCL. Piecewise linear regression analysis proved to be a valuable tool to detect changes in rate constants, and to update forecasts of the time required for groundwater concentrations to reach a cleanup goal.

A comprehensive monitoring approach for a naturally anoxic aquifer beneath a controlled landfill

Abstract:The processes leading to high levels of arsenic (As), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in groundwater, in a naturally reducing aquifer at a controlled municipal landfill site, are investigated. The challenge is to distinguish the natural water-rock interaction processes, that allow these substances to dissolve in groundwater, from direct pollution or enhanced dissolution of hydroxides as undesired consequences of the anthropic activities above. Ordinary groundwater monitoring of physical-chemical parameters and inorganic compounds (major and trace elements) was complemented by environmental isotopes of groundwater (tritium, deuterium, oxygen-18 and carbon-13) and dissolved gases (carbon-13 of methane and carbon dioxide and carbon-14 of methane). Pearson/Spearman correlation indices, as well as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), were used to determine the main correlations among variables. The concurrent presence of As, Fe and CH4, as reported in similar anoxic environments, suggests that anaerobic oxidation of methane could drive the reductive dissolution of As-rich Fe(III)(hydro)oxides. Manganese is more sensitive to carbon dioxide, possibly due to a decrease in pH which accelerates the dissolution of Mn-oxides. Finally, we found that tritium and deuterium, which have been used for decades as leachate tracer in groundwater, may be subject to false positives due to the reuse of water recovered from leachate treatment (which has the same isotopic signature of leachate) within the plants, to comply with the requirements of the circular economy. The integration of the environmental isotope analysis into the traditional monitoring approach can effectively support the comprehension of processes. However, this strategy needs to be complemented by a good conceptual hydrogeological model and expert evaluation to avoid misinterpretations.
Diffusive‐dispersive isotope fractionation of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater: The key role of incomplete mixing and its multi‐scale effects

Abstract:Diffusive‐dispersive processes are ubiquitous in porous media with important implications for solute transport in many natural and engineered systems; however, their effects on isotope fractionation of organic contaminants in subsurface flow‐through systems is not well understood. In this study, we investigate the propagation of isotope shifts in groundwater systems, induced by lateral diffusive‐dispersive isotope fractionation, on carbon and chlorine isotope signatures of chlorinated ethene plumes at steady state. We consider three distinct spatial scales (i.e., pore, laboratory, and field scales) and explore isotope fractionation with high‐resolution pore‐scale simulations, flow‐through experiments, and field‐scale numerical modeling. The experimental lab‐scale investigation was carried out using cis‐dichloroethene (cis‐DCE) as model contaminant, whereas cis‐DCE and trichloroethene (TCE) were considered in the multi‐scale numerical simulations. The pore‐scale analysis of transverse displacement demonstrates significant isotope fractionation over a wide range of seepage velocities (0.1 – 10 m/day). The pore‐scale simulations illuminate the key role of incomplete mixing, which sustains isotopologue‐specific gradients in the pore channels and results in the strongest isotope fractionation (−6‰ for carbon; −10‰ for chlorine) at the fastest flow velocity. The outcomes of the flow‐through experiments support the key role of isotopologue‐specific aqueous diffusion also at the laboratory scale, where significant diffusive‐dispersive isotopic shifts were observed at the outlet of the setup. Finally, the detailed field‐scale numerical simulations, performed in a cross‐section of a heterogeneous aquifer, illustrate that the microscopic diffusion‐induced isotope fraction propagates at macroscopic scales. Abstract:Each year in the U.S., vehicle side crashes result in over 6,000 fatalities. Delta-V, the vehicle change in velocity, is a widely used measure of crash injury risk in real world crashes. However, delta-V is difficult to estimate accurately for side crashes using reconstruction codes such as CRASH3. Such codes are the source of a large portion of the delta-V values in crash databases, so their accuracy has a direct impact on injury risk prediction data. In this study, delta-V was first reconstructed for a series of 42 staged side impact crash tests using CRASH3. This reconstructed delta-V was then compared to the delta-V recorded by the crash test instrumentation to determine the accuracy of the reconstructed value.

Abstract:We have constructed a pharmacokinetic model for TCDD in the rat, emphasizing its transfer between plasma, lipid, and cytoplasmic compartments of the liver, white adipose tissue (WAT), and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Volumes of the lipid pools are controlled by a submodel of triglyceride (TG) metabolism and transport that responds via a receptor for TCDD in WAT cytoplasm with a Kd of about 2 nM. This submodel, and one for cytochrome P450IA2 induction, allowed us to simulate binding of TCDD to the induced P450IA2 binding sites at low doses (1 ng/kg to 10 micrograms/kg) independently of the decreased feed intake and hyperlipidemia associated with higher doses (20 to 120 micrograms/kg). In low-dose simulations, the induction of cytochrome P450IA2 binding sites for TCDD dominated the redistribution of TCDD between WAT and liver. When simulations were performed using a partitioning model with constant gastrointestinal flows, increased WAT lipolysis driven by reduced feed intake (from 10 to 120 micrograms/kg) is predicted to result in a decreased WAT volume and a sharp drop in the mass of WAT-associated TCDD, while initially increasing the levels of TCDD in liver. However, the observed concentration of TCDD in WAT increased in rats treated with a high dose (72 micrograms/kg) of TCDD. The rise in tissue concentrations could not be explained without incorporating decreased intestinal flows into the gastrointestinal absorption process, which increased the resorption of TCDD. TCDD concentrations in tissue increased only when the relative tissue volumes decreased more rapidly than the whole-body TCDD elimination rate.

Abstract:The complexity of the subsurface contaminated by chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE) makes it challenging to gain a complete understanding of contamination distribution and establish a conceptual site model (CSM). High-resolution vertical contaminant concentration profiling across both the unsaturated zone and the saturated aquifer is desirable for mapping the distribution of contamination. A Fick's law-based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dialysis passive sampler was developed and evaluated on a field scale for its potential application. This study tests the passive sampler at two TCE contaminated sites, and the sampling results were compared with the results from different sampling methods based on the relative percent difference. The PDMS dialysis passive sampler obtained more representative soil gas concentrations in the unsaturated zone than a portable monitoring and sampling device, which caused soil gas flow disturbance by soil gas pumping during sample collection. In the saturated aquifer sampling, the results obtained by the PDMS dialysis passive sampler correlated well with those obtained by a commercial polyethylene passive diffusion bag, and exhibited higher sensitivity under low TCE concentration conditions. Furthermore, the PDMS dialysis passive samplers were densely deployed inside each monitoring well at multiple depths, at two sites, to achieve high-resolution monitoring across the unsaturated zone and 4saturated aquifer. Based on the PDMS dialysis sampler data, a more comprehensive three-dimensional CSM was systematically established.

Abstract:In recent decades, extensive monitoring programmes have been conducted at the national, international, and project levels with the objective of expanding our understanding of the contamination of surface waters with micropollutants, which are often referred to as hazardous substances (HS). It has been demonstrated that HS enter surface waters via a number of pathways, including groundwater, atmospheric deposition, soil erosion, and urban systems. Given the ever-growing list of substances and the high resource demand associated with laboratory analysis, it is common practice to quantify the listed pathways based on emission factors derived from temporally and spatially constrained monitoring programmes. The derivation calculations are subject to high uncertainties, and substantial knowledge gaps remain regarding the relative importance of the unique pathways, territories, and periods. This publication presents a monitoring method designed to quantify the unique emission pathways of HS in large geographical areas characterized by differences in land use, population, and economic development. The method will be tested for a wide range of HS (ubiquitous organic and inorganic pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals) throughout small sub-catchments located on tributaries. The results of the test application demonstrate a high diversity of both emission loads and instream concentrations throughout different regions for numerous substances. Riverine concentrations are found to be highly dependent on the flow status. Soil concentration levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found to be in proportion, whereas that of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in a reverse relationship with economic development. In many instances, concentration levels are also contingent upon land use. The findings of this study reinforce the necessity for the implementation of harmonised and concerted HS monitoring programmes, which should encompass a diverse range of substances, emission sources, pathways and geographical areas. This is essential for the reliable development of emission factors.
