Abstract:To obtain high purity of 1,3-Dioleoyl-2-palmitoylglycerol (OPO), an important structured triglyceride for infant formula, a facile method was established. Tripalmitin (PPP) was firstly synthesized, and then OA was incorporated into the sn-1 and 3 position of the PPP glycerol backbone by acidolysis catalyzed using sn-1,3 regiospecific lipases. Two kinds of widely used immobilized sn-1,3 regiospecific lipases, Lipozyme TL IM and Lipozyme RM IM, were investigated in both solvent (n-hexane) and solvent-free system. The results showed that Lipozyme TL IM and Lipozyme RM IM were suitable for solvent system and solvent-free system respectively. Other reaction conditions (enzyme load, substrate molar ratio, temperature, reaction time) were optimized. The palmitic acid (PA) at the sn-2 position of the obtained triacylglycerols (TAGS) under optimized conditions were 92.92% and 86.62%, and OPO contents in the final products were 32.34% and 40.23% in the solvent and solvent-free system respectively. Special emphasis was given to test the reusability of the two immobilized lipases, results showed that Lipozyme TL IM was almost non-reusable, while Lipozyme RM IM could keep its activity for at least 15 times (about 60 h). Enhanced Performance of Rhizopus Oryzae Lipase by Reasonable Immobilization on Magnetic Nanoparticles and Its Application in Synthesis 1,3-Diacyglycerol

Abstract:Nano-sized Fe 3 O 4 was synthesized by chemical co-precipitation and subsequently modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and glutaraldehyde to introduce aldehyde group on its surface. With the help of “interface activation” by adding sucrose esters-11 as surfactant, lipase from Rhizopus oryzae was successfully immobilized onto the carrier with great enhancement of activity. The hydrolysis activity of immobilized enzyme were 9.16 times and 31.6 times of free enzyme when p-nitrophenol butyrate and p-nitrophenol palmitate were used as substrates. The thermo-stability of immobilized enzyme was also enhanced compared to free enzyme. The immobilized enzyme was successfully applied in synthesis of 1,3-diacyglycerols (1,3-DAG). The specific esterification activity of immobilized enzyme was about 1.5 times of the free enzyme. The immobilized enzyme showed good region-selectivity towards 1,3-diacyglycerols and retained nearly 80% of its activity after reused for 60 times, revealing a good industrial application prospect.
Enzymatic Synthesis and Molecular Modelling Studies of Rhamnose Esters Using Lipase from Pseudomonas stutzeri

Abstract:Rhamnolipids are becoming an important class of glycolipid biosurfactants. Herein, we describe for the first time the enzymatic synthesis of rhamnose fatty acid esters by the transesterification of rhamnose with fatty acid vinyl esters, using lipase from Pseudomonas stutzeri as a biocatalyst. The use of this lipase allows excellent catalytic activity in the synthesis of 4-O-acylrhamnose (99% conversion and full regioselectivity) after 3 h of reaction using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the reaction media and an excess of vinyl laurate as the acyl donor. The role of reaction conditions, such as temperature, the substrates molar ratio, organic reaction medium and acyl donor chain-length, was studied. Optimum conditions were found using 35 °C, a molar ratio of 1:3 (rhamnose:acyldonor), solvents with a low logP value, and fatty acids with chain lengths from C4 to C18 as acyl donors. In hydrophilic solvents such as THF and acetone, conversions of up to 99–92% were achieved after 3 h of reaction. In a more sustainable solvent such as 2-methyl-THF (2-MeTHF), high conversions were also obtained (86%). Short and medium chain acyl donors (C4–C10) allowed maximum conversions after 3 h, and long chain acyl donors (C12–C18) required longer reactions (5 h) to get 99% conversions. Furthermore, scaled up reactions are feasible without losing catalytic action and regioselectivity. In order to explain enzyme regioselectivity and its ability to accommodate ester chains of different lengths, homology modelling, docking studies and molecular dynamic simulations were performed to explain the behaviour observed.

Abstract:Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) belongs to the hyperbranched polyesters family (HBP), which possesses an extensive variety of applications due to its tunable chemical and mechanical properties, together with its biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, the understanding of PGS synthesis becomes a challenge due to the lack of consistency when determining its synthesis parameters. Understanding these parameters is fundamental to control PGS synthesis and obtain a scalable and reproducible final product for biomedical applications. To unveil their effect on diverging PGS properties, diols are used as glycerol analogs and the reaction is chemically and thermally monitored, suggesting a heterogeneous reactivity of the exposed hydroxyl groups. Also, confinement of the prepolymerization is proven to be fundamental In order to maintain the equimolar ratio of initial monomers during synthesis. Early stages of the polycondensation (first 4 h) tend to linear and less branched oligomers by consuming primary hydroxyls rather than secondary hydroxyls. However, physicochemical characterization determines that a high degree of conversion (40%) is reached during these early stages. Afterward, the oligomers tend to condense through the secondary hydroxyls into a more crosslinked elastomer. This study demonstrates how hydroxyl affinity, water presence, and glycerol loss are crucial for the scalability and reproducibility of its final product.
Synthesis and emulsification properties of polyglyceryl estolides prepared from fatty acids

Abstract:Polyglyceryl polyricinoleate (PGPR) is an emulsifier produced by esterification of polyricinoleic acid and polyglycerol. Polyricinoleic acid is derived from ricinoleic acid, which is expensive compared to other fatty acids. Therefore, analogues of polyricinoleic acid should be made from less expensive fatty acids, such as oleic acid. Therefore, oleic acid was converted to polyhydroxy estolide (PE) by a reaction with hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid. The PE was used as a substitute for polyricinoleic acid to produce PGPR analogues by direct esterification with polyglycerol and various fatty acids. The direct reaction between polyglycerol and PE produced a polyglyceryl estolide (PGE) with high viscosity and hydroxyl value, which limited its suitability as an emulsifier for the isopropyl myristate (IPM) and water system. Conversely, PGE prepared from lauric acid, polyglycerol and PE showed lower viscosity and hydroxyl value, resulting in a broad region of emulsion stability on a phase diagram when evaluated as a water-in-oil emulsifier for the IPM/water system. Similarly, other PGE made with oleic acid also displayed good emulsion stability for systems with higher IPM concentrations. In contrast, PGE prepared with stearic acid was a semi-solid at room temperature. Most of the prepared PGEs showed promising potential as emulsifiers for water-in-oil emulsions.

Abstract:The objective of the present work has been to analyze the influence of endothelium, ageing and hypertension in the norepinephrine (NE)-induced responses. For this purpose we used aortic rings from spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats of different ages. In rings with endothelium from 5-week-old WKY, cumulative addition of NE (0.01 and 0.1 microM) caused concentration-dependent contractions, whereas higher concentrations (1 and 10 microM) induced concentration-dependent relaxations. In 5-week-old SHR and 3-month-old WKY rats, these relaxant responses were observed only at 10 microM NE, and they disappeared in older animals from both strains. In endothelium denuded rings, NE induced only contractions, which were similar in WKY rats of different ages, but significantly increased in 6- and 12-month-old SHR. In both strains, the endothelium-dependent relaxant responses to NE were abolished by NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and propranolol, but not modified by yohimbine or ouabain. Isoproterenol (0.01-10 microM) induced concentration-dependent vasodilation in rings from 5-week-old rats of both strains, precontracted with 1 microM NE. Isoproterenol-elicited responses were reduced by endothelium removal or by 0.1 mM NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and abolished by 1 microM propranolol. These results suggest that: 1) in the aorta from young WKY and prehypertensive SHR rats, NE induces vasodilations mediated by activation of endothelial beta adrenoceptors and release of nitric oxide; 2) these responses are impaired during ageing and hypertension; and 3) there is an important negative endothelial modulation of NE-induced contraction in adult SHR rats.

Abstract:Lipases produced by a newly isolated Sporidiobolus pararoseus strain have potential catalytic ability for esterification reactions. After production, the enzymatic extracts (conventional crude and precipitated, 'CC' and 'CP', and industrial crude and precipitated, 'IC' e 'IP') were partially characterized. The enzymes presented, in general, higher specificity for short chain alcohols and fatty acids. The precipitated extract showed a good thermal stability, higher than that for crude enzymatic extracts. The 'CC' and 'CP' enzymes presented high activities after exposure to pH 6.5 and 40 °C. On the other hand, the 'IC' and 'IP' extracts kept their activities in a wide range of pH memory but presented preference for higher reaction temperatures. Preliminary studies of application of the crude lipase extract in the enzymatic production of geranyl propionate using geraniol and propionic acid as substrates in solvent-free system led to a reaction conversion of 42 ± 1.5%.
Study on the synthesis of pine sterol esters in solvent-free systems catalyzed by Candida rugosa lipase immobilized on hydrophobic macroporous resin

Abstract:Background: Pine sterol ester is a type of novel food source nutrient with great advantages in lowering blood cholesterol levels, inhibiting tumors, preventing prostate enlargement, and regulating immunity. Macroporous resins with large specific surface area, stable structures, and various functional groups (epoxy, amino, and octadecyl groups) have been selected for immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) to improve its stability and efficiency in the synthesis of pine sterol esters. A solvent-free strategy using oleic acid (substrate) as an esterification reaction medium is an important alternative for avoiding the use of organic solvents. Results: The immobilization conditions of CRL immobilized on several types of commercial macroporous resins were optimized. Fortunately, by adsorption (hydrophobic interaction), a high immobilization efficiency of CRL was obtained using macroporous resins with hydrophobic octadecyl groups with an immobilization efficiency of 86.5%, enzyme loading of 138.5 mg g-1 and enzyme activity of 34.7 U g-1 . The results showed that a 95.1% yield could be obtained with a molar ratio of oleic acid to pine sterol of 5:1, an enzyme amount of 6.0 U g-1 (relative to pine sterol mass) at 50 °C for 48 h. Conclusion: The hydrophobic macroporous resin (ECR8806M) with a large specific surface area and abundant functional groups was used to achieve efficient immobilization of CRL. CRL@ECR8806M is an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of phytosterol esters and has the potential for further large-scale applications. Therefore, this simple, green, and low-cost strategy for lipase immobilization provides new possibilities for the high-efficiency production of pine sterol esters and other food source nutrients. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Obtaining polyesters with the preservation of pendant hydroxyl groups is desired because it allows for the modulation of degradability and hydrophilicity for later functionalizations and applications, including encapsulation and construction of micropatterned elastomers, scaffolds, and fibrous structures by electrospinning or 3D printing. The catalytic specificity of N435 for synthesizing poly(propylene succinate-co-glycerol succinate) (PPSG) with varying comonomer ratios has been explored. Characterization of the polymers involved evaluation of the molecular architecture, average molar masses, hydrophilicity, and rheological behavior. Various techniques were employed, including nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography, goniometry, rheometry, scanning electron microscopy, and enzymatic activity analysis. Polymer architecture was affected by glycerol fractions, leading to different gel contents. Using 10 wt % of the N435 and a 20% molar ratio of glycerol, a PPSG with higher hydrophilicity and low gel content was obtained. Enzyme reuse was studied, and insights into the polyester-enzyme support interaction were gained. Ultimately, the potential of glycerol-based polyesters to expand the range of hydroxy-functionalized materials for advanced applications has been enhanced.

Abstract:Various geraniol esters act as insect pheromones and display pharmacological activities, especially as neuroprotective agents. Therefore, the search for synthetic strategies alternative to traditional chemical synthesis could help designing ecofriendly routes for the preparation of such bioactive compounds. Hence, this work aims at the microwave-assisted enzymatic synthesis of geranyl esters in solvent-free systems. The process variables were optimized for the synthesis of geranyl acetoacetate, achieving 85% conversion after 60 min using a 1:5 substrates molar ratio (ester to geraniol), 80 °C and 8.4% of Lipozyme 435 lipase without removal of the co-produced methanol. On the other hand, a 95% conversion was reached after 30 min using 1:6 substrates molar ratio, 70 °C and 7% lipase in the presence of 5Å molecular sieves for the methanol capture. In addition, the lipase showed good reusability, maintaining the same activity for five reaction cycles. Finally, under the above optimized conditions, other geraniol esters were successfully synthetized such as the geranyl butyrate (98%), geranyl hexanoate (99%), geranyl octanoate (98%), and geranyl ( R )-3-hydroxybutyrate (56%). These results demonstrate the microwave-assisted lipase-catalyzed transesterification in a solvent-free system as an excellent and sustainable catalytic methodology to produce geraniol esters.

Abstract:This paper presents a new way of rearranging the input and output of isolated converters. The new arrangement posses several advantages, as increased voltage range, higher power handling capabilities, reduced voltage stress and improved efficiency, for applications where galvanic isolation is not a requirement. The proposed technique is particularly valuable in power conversion at very high frequencies, and may be combined with other stress reduction methods. Finally, the new arrangements are experimentally verified both on off the shelf converters and on a VHF resonant SEPIC converter. All results are in good agreement with the theory and twice the power handling capabilities and 5-10% higher efficiencies are shown.
Enzymatic preparation of diacylglycerols: lipase screening, immobilization, characterization and glycerolysis performance

Abstract:Backgrounds: Glycerolysis, with its advantages of readily available raw materials, simple operation, and mild reaction conditions, is a primary method for producing diacylglycerol (DAG). However, enzymatic glycerolysis faces challenges such as high enzyme costs, low reuse efficiency, and poor stability. The study aims to develop a cost-effective immobilized enzyme by covalently binding lipase to pre-activated carriers through the selection of suitable lipases, carriers, and activating agents. The optimization is intended to improve the glycerolysis reaction for efficient DAG production. Results: Lipase CN-TL (from Thermomyces lanuginosus) was selected through glycerolysis reaction and molecular docking to catalyze the glycerolysis reaction. Optimizing the immobilization method by covalently binding CN-TL to poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE)-preactivated resin LX-201A resulted in the preparation of the immobilized enzyme TL-PEGDGE-LX. The immobilized enzyme retained over 90% of its initial activity after five consecutive reactions, demonstrating excellent reusability. The DAG content in the product remained at 84.8% of its initial level, further highlighting the enzyme's potential for reusability and its promising applications in the food and oil industries. Conclusions: The immobilized lipase TL-PEGDGE-LX, created by covalently immobilizing lipase CN-TL on PEGDGE-preactivated carriers, demonstrated broad applicability and excellent reusability. This approach offers an economical and convenient immobilization strategy for the enzymatic glycerolysis production of DAG. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
LIPASE FROM Rhizopus oryzae IMMOBILIZED ON CORN COB POWDER: A NEW APPROACH FOR DIETETIC TRIGLYCERIDE SYNTHESIS IN A FIXED BED REACTOR

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of using corn cob powder as a carrier for immobilization by physical adsorption of lipase from Rhizopus oryzae used in acidolysis reaction of grape seed oil with capric acid (C10) to synthesize dietary triglycerides (TAGs) formed from medium-long-medium chain (MLM) fatty acids in a fixed bed reactor. First, enzymatic loading was investigated to improve hydrolytic activity and the immobilized biocatalyst was characterized in terms of biochemical parameters and thermal stability. An enzyme load of 30 mg mL-1 was quite adequate, as about 90% of the immobilization yield was achieved. The central composite rotatable design (CCRD) experimental design revealed that, for the immobilized enzyme, the optimal hydrolytic activity was obtained at pH 7.75 and 41 °C. Stirred tank reactions were optimized in CCRD statistical analysis revealing the most desirable conditions for molar ratio of 1:9.36 (oil:acid), 45 °C and 15% biocatalyst, obtaining a maximum ID value of 86.93 ± 2.25%. In a fixed bed reactor, the synthesis showed an average ID of 51.13 ± 0.77, demonstrating the potential of this configuration. It is concluded that corn cob powder as an immobilization carrier is a promising alternative for the enzymatic synthesis of MLM triacylglycerols.

Abstract:Monoricinolein (MRO) is a renewable and biodegradable surfactant derived from castor oil (CO). In this work, a novel ionic liquid (IL)-catalyzed method for selective MRO preparation by the glycerolysis of CO was investigated. Six basic ILs ([Bmim]Im, [Bmim]OH, [Bmim]DCN, [Bmim]OAc, [Emim]OAc, [Emim]Im) were screened and evaluated as homogeneous catalysts. Among the tested ILs, [Bmim]Im showed the best catalysis performance. An evaluation of the effects of reaction variables on the IL-catalyzed glycerolysis was carried out (temperature, reaction time, IL load and substrate ratio). The maximum MRO yield (75.77 ± 1.20%) and triacylglyceride (TAG) conversion (96.67 ± 0.10%) were obtained under the following optimized conditions: CO/glycerol molar ratio 1:6, IL load 10%, 180 °C, 3 h, and no water added. The results showed that the selectivity of MRO was enhanced. The activation energies (Ea) for CO conversion and formation of the MRO were 44.07 kJ/mol and 54.99 kJ/mol, respectively.

Abstract:Production of esters, organic compounds with emollient, emulsifying, and aromatic properties is growing due to high demand and their applications in the cosmetics industry. The synthesis of these compounds involves the reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, which can be catalyzed by lipases. In this context, the objective of this study was to produce mycelium-bound lipases of the fungus Rhizopus oryzae through submerged cultivation, with the aim of applying them in the synthesis of ethylene glycol oleate, ethylene glycol stearate, and isoamyl palmitate esters, which are relevant to the cosmetic industry. The influence of solvent usage (heptane), biocatalyst mass, and acid/alcohol molar ratio was evaluated in the esterification reactions. In the synthesis of the three tested esters, and in the presence of heptane solvent, an equimolar ratio (1:1) of each acid and alcohol with a concentration of 0.01 mol L-1 was utilized. The reactions were performed in agitated Erlenmeyer flasks at 40 °C with an agitation speed of 200 rpm. The lipolytic biomass of Rhizopus oryzae showed better performance in the synthesis of isoamyl palmitate, achieving a maximum conversion of 83% in 24 h of reaction using 0.30 g of lipolytic biomass and the solvent heptane. In addition, it was observed that higher concentrations of catalyst biomass (0.45 g) and lower molar ratios (1:1.5) of acid to alcohol resulted in a higher conversion of isoamyl palmitate ester, reaching conversions of 48.59 and 83.11%, respectively.

Abstract:The catalytic specificity of Lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) has been exploited to achieve specific terminal groups for the synthesis of glycerol poly(ester)s. This permits the preparation of glycerol-derived macromers able to undergo further reactions/chemical modifications for customization as functional systems and building blocks for polymer synthesis. Poly(glycerol adipate) based macromers with different terminal structures were achieved from the reaction between glycerol and divinyl adipate by varying the stoichiometry (from equimolar to 1.5 and 3.0 excess either of glycerol or divinyl adipate) and amount of catalyst (1 and 3 wt%). In the course of polymerization, transesterification and hydrolysis reactions occurs over vinyl functionalities that results in acid endgroups. Thus, the resulting macromers are either terminated with hydroxyl groups and/or acid groups and/or vinyl groups. Therefore, an understanding of how acid functionality appears (from vinyl groups hydrolysis) and its quantification under various conditions may provide an opportunity for the design of synthetic strategies to avoid acid production and obtain the desired structures. Endgroup analysis was carried out using 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies and MALDI-TOF spectrometry. Mainly linear hydroxyl and vinyl-terminated macromers were obtained with high efficiency without significant hydrolysis of the chain ends (for vinyl terminated).

Abstract:Sugar esters have recently received increased attention from the viewpoint of renewable resources. Specifically vinyl esters from carbohydrates by enzyme-catalyzed regioselective transformations offer a new family of functional water-soluble monomers for preparation of sugar-based polymers. Here we reported enzyme-catalyzed regloselective synthesis of novel polymerizable raffinose vinyl ester. Transesterification of raffinose with divinyl succinate, divinyl adipate and divinyl sebacate in anhydrous pyridine at 50 degreesC for 6 d was catalyzed by an alkaline protease from Bacillus subtilis. Three raffinose vinyl esters with different acyl donor chain lengths were regioselectively synthesized at 55%, 48% and 30% yields, respectively. Characterization of the products by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and H-1-H-1 correlation spectroscopy and H-1-C-13 heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence NMR revealed that the ester was substituted at C-1 position of beta-fructofuranose moiety in raffinose. Reaction conditions for the esterification were investigated. Activities of. seven commercial enzymes from different sources catalyzing synthesis of raffinose ester Were compared. Lipase from porcine pancreas(PPL) and alkaline protease from Bacillus subtilis had high activities. We also studied the effect of temperature and incubation time on raffinose esters synthesis catalyzed by alkaline protease from Bacillus subtilis and found the optimal temperature and reaction time were 50 degreesC and 6 d respectively.
Green synthesis of (R)-3-hydroxy-decanoic acid and analogs from levoglucosenone: a novel access to the fatty acid moiety of rhamnolipids

Abstract:Rhamnolipids (RLs) are highly valuable molecules in the cosmetic, pharmaceutic, and agricultural sectors with outstanding biosurfactant properties. In agriculture, due to their potential to artificially stimulate the natural immune system of crops (also known as elicitation), they could represent a critical substitute to conventional pesticides. However, their current synthesis methods are complex and not aligned with green chemistry principles, posing a challenge for their industrial applications. In addition, their bioproduction is cumbersome with reproducibility issues and expensive downstream processing. This work offers a more straightforward and green access to RLs, crucial to decipher their mechanisms of action and design novel potent and eco-friendly elicitors. To achieve this, we propose an efficient seven-step synthetic pathway toward ( R )-3-hydroxyfatty acid chains present in RLs, starting from cellulose-derived levoglucosenone, with Michael addition, Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, Bernet–Vasella reaction, and cross-metathesis homologation as key steps. This method allowed the production of ( R )-3-hydroxyfatty acid chains and derivatives with an overall yield ranging from 24% to 36%.

Application of Stemphylium lycopersici Extracts Immobilized on MCM-48type Mesoporous Materials as Biocatalysts for Monoacylglycerol Production

Abstract:Monoacylglycerols are eco-friendly and inexpensive emulsifiers with a range of applications. The traditional synthetic route is not eco-friendly, while enzymatic catalysis offers milder reaction conditions and higher selectivity. However, its application still is limited due to the costs. In this context, endophytic fungi can be source to new biocatalysts with enhanced catalytic activity. Based on this perspective, the aim of this study was perform the synthesis of MAG's through transesterification reactions of solketal and different vinyl esters, using crude and immobilized lipolytic extracts from the endophytic fungi Stemphylium lycopersici, isolated from Humiria balsamifera. The reactions were conducted using 100 mg of biocatalyst, 1 mmol of substrates, 9 : 1 n-heptane/acetone, at 40 °C, 200 rpm for 96 h. In the reactions using the ILE and stearate, laureate and decanoate vinyl esters it was possible to obtain the correspondent products with conversion rates of 52-75 %. Also, according to the structure drivers used in MCM-48 synthesis, different morphologies and conversions rates were observed. Employing [C16MI] Cl, [C14MI] Cl and [C4MI] Cl, the 1-lauroyl- glycerol conversion was 36 %, 79 % and 44 %, respectively. This is the first work involving the immobilization of an endophytic fungi and its utilization as a biocatalyst in the production of MAG's.

Abstract:Ascorbyl palmitate, an ascorbic acid ester, is an important amphipathic antioxidant that has several applications in foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The enzymatic synthesis of ascorbyl palmitate is very attractive, but few efforts have been made to address its process scale-up and implementation. This study aimed at evaluating the enzymatic synthesis of ascorbyl palmitate in a rotating basket reactor operated in sequential batches. Different commercial immobilized lipases were tested, and the most suitable reaction conditions were established. Among those lipases studied were Amano Lipase PS, Lipozyme® TL IM, Lipozyme® Novo 40086, Lipozyme® RM IM and Lipozyme® 435. Initially, the enzymes were screened based on previously defined synthesis conditions, showing clear differences in behavior. Lipozyme® 435 proved to be the best catalyst, reaching the highest values of initial reaction rate and yield. Therefore, it was selected for the following studies. Among the solvents assayed, 2-methyl-2-butanol and acetone showed the highest yields, but the operational stability of the catalyst was better in 2-methyl-2-butanol. The tests in a basket reactor showed great potential for large-scale application. Yields remained over 80% after four sequential batches, and the basket allowed for easy catalyst recycling. The results obtained in basket reactor are certainly a contribution to the enzymatic synthesis of ascorbyl palmitate as a competitive alternative to chemical synthesis. This may inspire future cost-effectiveness studies of the process to assess its potential as a viable alternative to be implemented.
