Abstract:Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease. The lesions are mainly located in the mucosa and submucosa of the large intestine, which is persistent and easy to relapse. [ 1 ] The global prevalence of UC is expected to affect up to 30 million people by 2025. [ 2 ] The typical clinical symptoms of UC included hematochezia, tenesmus and abdominal pain. The physical examination may be unremarkable. In patients with severe UC, abdominal tenderness along with fever and positive signs of peritoneal irritation are alarm signals for a worse prognosis. [ 3 ] Its etiology is unknown, and genetic, dietary, and environmental factors may play a role. Genetic factors are one of the important causes of UC, and the risk of UC is significantly increased in patients with positive family history. In addition, environmental factors may also have an impact on the pathogenesis of UC, such as diet and lifestyle. [ 4 ] In addition, abnormalities of the immune system are also considered to be one of the causes of UC, and the abnormal response of the immune system to the intestine leads to the persistence of inflammatory reactions. Although the etiology of UC is not completely clear, in-depth research on UC can help us better understand and treat this disease. [ 5 ]
