Abstract:In order to conserve valuable soil and water resources and avoid problems related to frozen soil, it is important to study the migration of frozen soil water. A greater understanding of frozen soil–water migration can assist with sustainable development and utilization of soil and water resources in frozen areas. This study used an indoor soil column test device to conduct a one-way indoor freezing test of unsaturated soil and the response of soil sample water migration to different freezing temperatures, initial moisture contents, soil densities, freezing times, solute concentrations, and solute types. The experimental and analytical results showed that the temperature field of the soil sample could be divided into three stages: sharp cooling, slow cooling, and stability. After the soil sample had been frozen for 100 h, the temperature field stabilized. The freezing temperature, initial water content, soil density, and freezing time affected water migration in the soil sample. Lower freezing temperatures and greater initial water content resulted in higher levels of water migration. By contrast, greater soil density led to lower water migration levels. In addition, longer freezing times produced smoother soil–water migration curves. The solute concentration and solute type also affected water migration in frozen soil; the higher the solute concentration, the greater the water migration. Compared with CaCl2, NaCl had a stronger effect, causing more water migration and leading to a higher water content. The research findings will aid further studies on soil and water utilization, environmental maintenance, and restoration in areas with seasonally frozen soil, as well as promote the sustainable development of agriculture, water conservancy project development, and the social economy.

Abstract:Soil salt transformation plays an important role in the freeze-thawing process , which is also one of basic problems of cryopedology. The very special law is made up of the two time salt-moisture transfer under freeze-thawing condition. Based on the latest research at home and abroad , through the investigation of soil moisture-salt change in the freeze-thawing process , the conclusion is made that the soil water potential gradient is the main driving force of soil salt movement and the factors are of quantities. The research shows that , when freezing , temperature drops , salt and moisture move towards frozen layer. All make the salinity content of the frozen layer increase significantly. In the thawing process , salinity and moisture in the soil move up again with evaporation and makes the salt second migration.

Abstract:Salinization and desertification are closely related to water-salt migration caused by a temperature gradient. Based on the Darcy Law of unsaturated soils, the law of energy conservation and the law of mass conservation, the thermal-water-salt coupling mathematical model of unsaturated frozen saline soil was established. The model considered the latent heat of phase change, crystallization impedance, crystallization consumption and complete precipitation of solute crystallization in ice. In order to verify the rationality of the model, the unidirectional freezing test of unsaturated saline soil was carried out in an open system with no-pressure water supplement to obtain the spatial distribution of temperature, moisture and salt in the saline soil. Finally, numerical simulations are implemented with the assistance of COMSOL Multiphysics. Validation of the model is illustrated by comparisons between the simulation and experimental data. The results demonstrated that the temperature within saline soil changes with time and can be divided into three stages, namely quick freezing stage, transitional stage and stable stage. The water and salt contents in the freezing zone are layered, with peak values at the freezing front. The coupled model could reveal the heat-mass migration mechanism of unsaturated frozen saline soil and dynamically describe the freezing depth and the movement law of the freezing front, ice and salt crystal formation mechanism, and the change law of thermal conductivity and permeability coefficient.

Abstract:Sandy saline soils are widely distributed and commonly experience seasonal or long‐term freezing, yet the freezing process in these soils is rarely studied. This research utilized in situ X‐ray computed tomography (CT) to visualize pore‐scale freezing processes in sandy saline soils under various initial water and salt contents. Micron‐resolution observations of pore ice and unfrozen water produced new insights into the preferential orientation and grouping of pore ice crystals, intersections between different pore ice crystal groups causing anisotropic behavior, decreasing pore ice crystal size under faster freezing rates, and the formation of interconnected networks of both pore ice and unfrozen water upon freezing. From a thermodynamic perspective, the salt content in the unfrozen liquid is dependent on the local temperature as described by water–salt phase diagram. Furthermore, the local volume ratio between unfrozen water and pore ice reflects the initial salt content and salt mass transfer occurring due to both diffusion and fluid flow processes. This work improves the understanding of complex freezing phenomena in sandy saline soils through high‐resolution evidence of crystallization patterns, transformation mechanisms, and coupled heat‐mass transfer.

Abstract:Abstract A systematical testing program on frozen Onsøy clay under isotropic loading and undrained shearing at different temperatures (− 3 ~ − 10 °C), strain rates (0.2~5%/h) and initial Terzaghi effective stress (20~400 kPa) was conducted with the focus on pore pressure development. It is meant to increase the understanding and facilitate the development of an ‘effective stress’-based model for multi-physical analysis for frozen soils. This study adopted the pore pressure measurement method suggested by Arenson and Springman (Can Geotech J 42 (2):412–430, 2005. https://doi.org/10.1139/t04-111) and developed a new testing procedure for frozen soils, including a ‘slow’ freezing method for sample preparation and post-freezing consolidation for securing hydraulic pressure equilibrium. The B-value of frozen soils is less than 1 and significantly dependent on temperature and loading history. The dilative tendency or pore pressure development in an undrained shearing condition is found to be dependent on both unfrozen water content and mean stress, which is consistent with unfrozen soils. Besides, the experimental results reported in the literature regarding uniaxial tests show that the shear strength does not share the same temperature- and salinity-dependency for different frozen soil types. The rate dependency of frozen soils is characterized between rate dependency of pure ice and that of the unfrozen soil and is therefore highly determined by the content of ice and the viscous behavior of ice (through temperature dependency). This paper also explains the pore pressure response in freezing and thawing is dependent on volumetric evolution of soil skeleton.

Abstract:The phenomenon of freezing point depression in frozen soils results in the co-existence of ice and liquid water in soil pores at temperatures below 273.15 K (0 °C), and is thought to have two causes: i) capillary and adsorption effects, where the phase transition relationship is modified due to soil-air-water-ice interactions, and ii) solute effects, where the presence of salts lowers the freezing temperature. The soil freezing characteristic curve (SFC) characterizes the relationship between liquid water content and temperature in frozen soils. Most hydrological models represent the SFC using only capillary and adsorption effects with a relationship known as the Generalized Clapeyron Equation (GCE). In this study, we develop and test a salt exclusion model for characterizing the SFC, comparing this with the GCE-based model and a combined salt-GCE effect model. We test these models against measured SFCs in laboratory and field experiments with diverse soil textures and salinities. We consistently found that the GCE-based models under-predicted freezing-point depression. We were able to match the observations with the salt exclusion model and the combined model, suggesting that salinity is a dominant control on the SFC in real soils that always contain solutes. In modelling applications where the salinity is unknown, the soil bulk solute concentration can be treated as a single fitting parameter. Improved characterization of the SFC may result in improvements in coupled mass-heat transport models for simulating hydrological processes in cold regions, particularly the hydraulic properties of frozen soils and the hydraulic head in frozen soils that drives cryosuction.

Abstract:The unfrozen water content constitutes a pivotal parameter in freezing soil, significantly impacting its thermal‐mechanical and deformation behavior. This study delves into the alterations in soil attributes as unfrozen water content varies. It examines the influences of impurities, van der Waals forces, and Coulomb forces on the water film, employing the premelting theory as a foundation. A critical state curve quantifying the ratio of the surface charge density to impurity concentration is parameterized for various soil types. Subsequently, combining the theory of effective solution concentration, we have provided calculation methods for the particle surface parameters of pore solutions as ideal and non‐ideal dilute solutions, respectively. This has determined the key variables in the model. Additionally, through the integration of equivalent particle sizes, packing structure, and water film thickness, a calculation model is devised and verified for determining the unfrozen water content and residual water content within in freezing soil. The findings indicate that fluctuation in the unfrozen water content primarily stem from impurities. In soils with equivalent saline content, impurity levels exhibit proportionality to the equivalent particle sizes. The residual unfrozen water is predominantly present within the absorbed water layer.

Abstract:Methods to correctly predict changes in matric suction greatly benefit the study of water migration in frozen soils. Current research on the matric suction mechanism and how it is influenced by external factors under horizontal freezing action is limited, and differences in matric suction in various freezing zones are usually ignored. In this paper, a connection between the microscopic and macroscopic water contents is established, and equations for calculating the matric suction of unequal sized particles are derived. Then, experiments are conducted to explore changes of matric suction in different freezing zones during horizontal freezing. Using experimental data, the correctness of the equations is verified, the sensitivity of matric suction to temperature and water content is explored, and the influence of the temperature, external loads, freeze–thaw cycles, and initial water content on water migration in frozen soil is studied. Finally, the development of matric suction in quartz silt during horizontal freezing is discussed and summarized based on experimental analyses and previous research. The results can provide important guidance for understanding the water migration mechanism of horizontal freezing and optimizing prevention measures for damage caused by horizontal freezing.

Abstract:Existing research on the mechanism of water migration during horizontal freezing is limited. Available freezing models are mainly applicable to saturated soils subjected vertical freezing and cannot accurately describe the coupled water-heat movement in unsaturated soils. In this paper, based on the Dallavalle formula and Young-Laplace equation, the Smith empirical formulation is used to establish a link between the macroscopic and microscopic water content of the frozen soil, and derive an analytical relationship between the matric suction and unfrozen water content of frozen soil. The formula is simplified to deduce the matric suction of unsaturated silt during horizontal freezing. A laboratory horizontal freezing experiment is carried out to explore the characteristics of the freezing process. The model established for the unsaturated freezing soil is subsequently improved by incorporating the relationships between matric suction, pore ice content, temperature, and unfrozen water content in the model. Using the model, the coupled water-heat movement during horizontal freezing process can be accurately described, and a typical case is analyzed to explore the interactions of temperature, unfrozen water, ice, and matric suction. In addition, the influence of the temperature gradient and initial water content on the freezing process characteristics is studied.

Abstract:The presence of liquid water in frozen media impacts the strength of soils, the growth of frost heave, plant life and microbial activities, or the durability of infrastructures in cold regions. If the effect of confinement on freezing is well known, water is never pure and solutes depressing the freezing point are naturally found. Moreover, the combination of confinement and solute is poorly understood. We imaged the freezing dynamics of water in a model porous medium with various salt (KCl) concentrations. We showed that the freezing front, initially heterogeneous due to confinement, drives salt enrichment in the remaining liquid, further depressing its freezing point. Confinement and solute have a synergistic effect that results in much larger mushy layers and greater freezing point depression. These results should help understand the distribution of water in frozen porous media, solute precipitation and redistribution in soils, and cryo-tolerance of construction materials and organisms.

Abstract:Freezing in saturated saline soil is a dynamic, coupled hydraulic-thermal-salt-mechanical (HSTM) process. The aim of this paper is to establish a model to describe the coupling process. In the model, mass conservation law, Darcy’s law, and the energy conservation law are applied. The Clapeyron equation is used to illustrate the phase equilibrium in the multiphase system of soil, ice, and water, which contributes to the simplification of the soil-water potential. A freezing experiment using a 20-cm soil column with top-side freezing was performed, and the model was solved using transient finite elements. The numerical simulation fit well with the experiment data. The results show the temperature distribution, the water content distribution, the frost heave amount, and the salt distribution at different times along the one-dimensional column. In addition, it was found that the temperature in the frozen zone changes faster than that in the unfrozen zone, and the temperature distribution tends to be stable after freezing for 96 h, resulting in upward water migration toward the freezing front from the unfrozen zone and the formation of ice lenses. Because of the water migration, an expansion process is produced, and salt is transported upward constantly. Excess salt is precipitated if the solute concentration exceeds the solubility. These results provide a reference for soil salinization and frost heave behavior in saline soils in cold regions.

Abstract:The freezing of sulfate saline soil involves the coupling effect of heat and mass transfer and crystallization deformation. The influence of salt content and temperature on the crystallization of ice and salt was analyzed by using a one‐side freezing experiment. Based on the effect of solute and temperature on water activity, a crystallization kinetics model of ice–water phase change in saline soil was established. The application of supersaturation in the crystallization kinetics model of solution–crystal phase change is improved with the Frezchem model. The calculated results are compared with experimental data to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. the study shows that: (a) crystallization can be well illustrated by the proposed model based on the concepts of the formation factor of ice crystals and solution supersaturation; (b) convection and diffusion are the main means of salt redistribution, which cause the accumulation of salt above the freezing front and the formation of discontinuously distributed–layered salt crystal zones; and (c) the alternate crystallization of ice and salt increases variation i solute concentration and then increases crystallization pressure, which leads to the deformation of salt expansion.

Abstract:The freezing process of saturated soil is studied under the condition of water replenishment. The process of soil freezing was simulated based on the theory of the energy and mass conservation equations and the equation of mechanical equilibrium. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparison with the experimental results of soil freezing. One-side freezing of a saturated 10-cm-high soil column in an open system with different parameters was simulated, and the effects of the initial void ratio, hydraulic conductivity, and thermal conductivity of soil particles on soil frost heave, freezing depth, and ice lenses distribution during soil freezing were explored. During the freezing process, water migrates from the warm end to the frozen fringe under the actions of the temperature gradient and pore pressure. During the initial period of freezing, the frozen front quickly moves downward, the freezing depth is about 5 cm after freezing for 30 h, and the final freezing depth remains about 6 cm. The freezing depth of the soil column is affected by soil porosity and thermal conductivity, but the final freezing depth mainly depends on the temperatures of the top and lower surfaces. The frost heave is mainly related to the amount of water migration. The relationship between the amount of frost heave and the hydraulic conductivity is positively correlated, and the thickness of the stable ice lens is greatly affected by the hydraulic conductivity. With the increase of the hydraulic conductivity and initial void ratio, the formation of ice lenses in the soil become easier. With the increase of the initial void ratio and thermal conductivity of soil particles, the frost heave of the soil column also increases. With high-thermal-conductivity soil, the formation of ice lenses become difficult.

Abstract:<p>The relationship between the unfrozen water content in frozen soil and negative temperature is defined as the soil freezing characteristic curve (SFCC). The SFCC plays a crucial role in understanding the hydrothermal migration, frost heaving and constitutive relations of frozen soil. The mechanism of the SFCC is less understood, especially in the low-temperature range. Considering the adsorption and capillary action between soil particles and the ice interface, a new SFCC model for saturated frozen soil is proposed from the pore scale. The predicted results of the model show that the unfrozen water content gradually decreases with the increasing particle radius at the same temperature. The SFCC of monodisperse silica microspheres and quartz sand samples were tested based on nuclear magnetic resonance technology. The experimental results were compared with the mathematical model, which showed that the new SFCC model is in good agreement with the experimental results. The new model has a clear physical meaning and can provide a theoretical basis for understanding the phase change process in frozen soils, which is of great significance to the application of the proposed model.</p>

Abstract:Freezing temperature is an important parameter in studying the freezing mechanism of saline soil. An equation for calculating the freezing temperature is proposed based on the phase transition theory in porous medium, including two main influencing factors, the water activity and pore size. In this equation, the effect of the water activity on the freezing temperature of soil is calculated by Pitzer model, while the impact of pore size is replaced by water content. Through comparing the calculated results with the published experimental data, the equation is proved to be competent in predicting the freezing temperature for the saline soil with sodium chloride or calcium chloride. For the saline soil with sodium carbonate, the effect of salt hydrate crystallization should be taken into consideration. With respect to the saline soil with sodium sulfate, it is difficult to determine the freezing temperature, since there is uncertainty of the resultant when freezing (that is, heptahydrate or decahydrate). In addition, the effects of pore size and multi-component solutes on freezing temperature are also discussed. The study would be helpful for revealing the freezing mechanism and also providing a useful theoretical method for engineering design of saline soil in cold regions.

Abstract:Salt expansion and frost heave are the main diseases of salted frozen soil roadbeds. Salt swelling and frost heave disease are closely related to the salted soil water–salt migration, temperature variation, and salt crystallization amount change. This article establishes a coupled model of water, heat, and salt fields based on the capillary model and the unfrozen water characteristic curve. The study shows that the different initial moisture contents have minimal effects on the location of soil salt migration and aggregation. The different initial salt concentrations have a substantial effect on the soil water–salt migration aggregation position; when the concentration of sodium sulfate increases, different from chloride saline soils, the position of the freezing front fluctuates up and down over time. The water–salt migration and aggregation are smaller in the closed condition, where they are reduced by 38% and 20%, respectively.

Abstract:Soil freezing represents a complex thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling process that encompasses a range of physical and mechanical phenomena, such as heat transfer, moisture migration, cryostructure development, ice lens segregation, frost heave, and consolidation, all of which interact and influence one another throughout the freezing process. This study conducted a unidirectional stepwise freezing test, comprising three distinct freezing stages, to investigate the freezing behavior of Qinghai-Tibet silty clay using digital imaging processing technology (DIPT), which includes an image acquisition system and a digital image processing system. The results demonstrate that the stepwise freezing test provides a more comprehensive insight into the physical and mechanical processes occurring during unidirectional soil freezing. At various stages of freezing, the temperature distribution within the sample achieves a linear stabilization, with the frozen zone exhibiting a slightly larger extent compared to the unfrozen zone. The longitudinal section of the sample developed layered cryogenic cracks, whereas the horizontal section revealed interconnected cryogenic polygonal cracks of varying sizes, which facilitated moisture migration and ice segregation. Furthermore, ice lenses can segregate within a broad temperature range below the soil freezing point in the frozen zone, resulting in frost heave within the frozen zone and consolidation of the unfrozen zone. This study proposes an experimental method to clarify the complex phenomenon and mechanisms of frost heave during soil freezing.

Abstract:<p>The hydraulic conductivity of frozen soil has significant effects on the moisture and solute migration and on the ice segregation in frost heave when the soil is being frozen. In this study, in accordance with the thermodynamic theory of unfrozen water film, the variation of chemical potential energy of water film due to salt and soil particles is considered. It is highlighted that moisture migration in the frozen soil can be considered as the Darcy flow under a new equivalent water pressure control. On that basis, the expression of pore water freezing temperature and pore radius is yielded, and then the capillary bundle theory and the soil frozen characteristic curve (SFCC) are used for the frozen soil to build a theoretical model to predict the hydraulic conductivity of frozen saline/non-saline soil. Through the comparison of four empirical equations and experimental data, the results achieved using our theoretical model can help to predict the hydraulic conductivity of the frozen soil. Furthermore, frozen non-saline soil achieves 12.47% the contribution of unfrozen water film to hydraulic conductivity, and frozen saline soil achieves 11.25% according to warm frozen soil from 0 to −2 °C. Thus, this important channel cannot be ignored for water migration. Actually, this theoretical model gives an important parameter to the numerical simulation of frost heave in cold regions engineering, which can be referenced for the study on hydraulic conductivity of frozen saline/non-saline soil.</p>

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Soil properties play a crucial role in the stability of engineering foundations, particularly in cold regions where temperature gradients impact water migration and soil conditions. This study utilized MRI-Cryogenic Soil-Moisture Analyzer (MRI-CSMA) to conduct indoor freeze-thaw experiments on silty clay specimens with varying initial water contents (12.0 %, 16.8 %, and 21.1 %). Dynamic changes in water content and temperature at different soil depths were analyzed. The results revealed distinct stage decrease characteristics in both temperature and water content as freezing progressed, with more pronounced changes closer to the cold end. Conversely, during thawing, temperatures and water content gradually increased as the boundary temperature rose. Notably, after the freeze-thaw cycle, the frozen zone consistently retained higher water content than the unfrozen zone, indicating water redistribution, regardless of initial water content levels. Furthermore, in three soil samples with different initial water contents, the water migration flux in the unfrozen soil layer decreased exponentially as freezing time increased. This phenomenon can be attributed to the combined effects of water boundary conditions, temperature gradients, and soil structure changes during soil freezing. These findings are likely to have significant implications for understanding water-heat dynamics in cold region soils as well as ensuring the stability of engineering projects.
