Abstract:Natural nanoparticles are present in soils but their abundance, properties and interactions with other soil components have not been studied widely. We used an ultrasonic‐centrifugal method to disperse and extract nanoparticles from 12 soils sampled in different regions of China. Various techniques were used to study the characteristics of the nanoparticles obtained, including particle size and zeta potential analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that not all soils released nanoparticles by ultrasonic perturbation. For most Mollisols and Alfisols, large amounts of nanoparticles of relatively small size (around 25 nm) and simple composition (only muscovite and montmorillonite) were released preferentially at low ultrasonic energy. The suspension conditions (3–4 g kg−1 nanoparticle in solution with 0.4–0.6 mm ionic strength) were unfavourable for nanoparticle aggregation and the suspensions remained stable for up to 100 days. In contrast, it was difficult to release nanoparticles from Ultisols and Entisols. Ultisols and Entisols released small amounts of nanoparticles (size around 70 nm) and the suspension was very unstable, and some released no nanoparticles unless the dispersant was added. The study also indicated that the characteristics of the isolated nanoparticles were directly related to their respective matrix soils.
Differences in Transport Behavior of Natural Soil Colloids of Contrasting Sizes from Nanometer to Micron and the Environmental Implications.

Abstract:Transport behaviors of nanoparticles (<100 nm) and clay fractions (clay particles, <2 mu m; coarse clay particles, 1-2 mu m and fine clay particles, 0.1-1 mu m) extracted from two natural soils (Inceptisol from Jilin and Oxisol from Hainan, China) were investigated in saturated sand columns at 1-30 mM NaCl and pH 5-9. Increasing NaCl concentrations decreased the mobility, while increasing pH increased the mobility of soil particles of various sizes. At pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl, nanoparticles and clay fractions exhibited the different transport behaviors, and ripening was observed for Inceptisol nanoparticles while blocking for Oxisol nanoparticles in breakthrough curves (BTCs). The effluent mass recoveries (MRs) of nanoparticles were much more than that of clay particles for both two soils (>1.9-fold) at all tested conditions, except for Inceptisol at pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl (with comparable MR). According to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations and particle-collector size ratios, both secondary energy minimum and physical straining led to the retention of clay fractions at pH 5 and 30mM NaCl, whereas primary energy minimum and straining induced by simultaneous aggregation caused the retention of nanoparticles. The experimental attachment efficiency between soil particles of various sizes and sand collector for both two soils was in the order nanoparticles < fine clay particles < clay particles < coarse clay particles, indicating that soil nanoparticles had greater mobility than clay fractions. Consequently, nanoparticles are suggested to have greater risks to transport contaminants to surface and groundwater, once they are released from soils. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Bioavailability and Translocation of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in the Soil-Rice Plant System.

Abstract:To determine the bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) in the soil-rice plant system, we examined the accumulation and micro-distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg) in the paddy soil and rice plants under flooded condition for 30 days using single-step chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique combined with micro Xray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu-XRF). The results show that various MONPs changed the soil properties, especially the redox potential was enhanced to -165.33 to -75.33 mV compared to the control. The extraction efficiency of Zn, Cu and Ce in the paddy soil from high to low was EDTA, DTPA CaCl2 and DGT. Moreover, exposure to 500 mg/kg CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs induced the primary accumulation of Cu and Ce elements in rice roots as high as 235.48 mg Cu/kg and 164.84 mg Ce/kg, respectively, while the Zn concentration in shoots was up to 313.18 mg/kg under highest ZnO NPs with a 1.5 of translocation factor. The effect of MONPs on the plant growth was mainly related to the chemical species and solubility of MONPs. Micro-XRF analysis shows that Zn was mostly located in the root cortex while Cu was primarily accumulated in the root exodermis and few Ce distributed in the root. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate that only DTPA-extracted metals in soil were significantly and well correlated to the Zn, Cu and Ce accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to MONPs. This work is of great significance for evaluating the environmental risks of MONPs in soil and ensuring the safety of agricultural products. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Stability of Titania Nanoparticles in Soil Suspensions and Transport in Saturated Homogeneous Soil Columns.

Abstract:The stability of TiO(2) nanoparticles in soil suspensions and their transport behavior through saturated homogeneous soil columns were studied. The results showed that TiO(2) could remain suspended in soil suspensions even after settling for 10 days. The suspended TiO(2) contents in soil suspensions after 24h were positively correlated with the dissolved organic carbon and clay content of the soils, but were negatively correlated with ionic strength, pH and zeta potential. In soils containing soil particles of relatively large diameters and lower solution ionic strengths, a significant portion of the TiO(2) (18.8-83.0%) readily passed through the soils columns, while TiO(2) was significantly retained by soils with higher clay contents and salinity. TiO(2) aggregate sizes in the column outflow significantly increased after passing through the soil columns. The estimated transport distances of TiO(2) in some soils ranged from 41.3 to 370 cm, indicating potential environmental risk of TiO(2) nanoparticles to deep soil layers.
Laboratory Assessment of the Mobility of Water-Dispersed Engineered Nanoparticles in A Red Soil (Ultisol)

Abstract:Soils are major sinks of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) as results of land applications of sewage sludge, accidental spills, or deliberate applications of ENPs (e.g., nano-pesticides). In this study, the transport behaviors of four widely used ENPs (i.e., titanium dioxide [TiO2], buckminsterfullerene [C-60], single-walled carbon nanotube [SWNT], and elemental silver [Ag-0]) were investigated in water-saturated columns packed with either a quartz sand, a red soil (Ultisol), or sand/soil mixtures with soil mass fraction (lambda) from 0% to 100% at slightly acidic solution pH (4.0-5.0). The mobility of tested ENPs decreased significantly with increasing lambda, which was attributed to increased surface area and/or retention sites imparted by iron oxides, clay minerals, and organic matter in the red soil. Breakthrough curves of all ENPs exhibited blocking effects (decreasing deposition rate over time) and were well-described using an unfavorable and favorable, two-site kinetic attachment model accounting for random sequential adsorption on the favorable site. Modeled maximum retention capacity and first-order attachment rate coefficient on the favorable site both increased linearly with increasing lambda, suggesting that transport parameters of ENPs in natural soils may be accurately extrapolated from transport parameters in the sand/soil mixtures. In addition, the mobility of three negatively charged ENPs (C-60, SWNT, and Ag-0 NPs) was reversely correlated with their average hydrodynamic diameters, highlighting that the average hydrodynamic diameter of negatively charged ENPs is the dominant physicochemical characteristics controlling their mobility in the Ultisol. Distinguishable transport behavior of zinc oxide nanoparticles in silica sand and soil columns.

Abstract:As part of ongoing risk assessments of ZnO nanoparticles (nZnO) in the natural environment, transport behaviors of nZnO in soil need investigation. This work comparatively studied the transport and retention behavior of nZnO in silica sand versus soil, where the effect of input concentration (C0=34~430mgL-1) and ionic strength (IS=1~50mM) were investigated. In silica sand, nZnO were highly mobile, especially at low C0 and the efflux of nZnO generally decreased with increasing C0 at all tested IS. Conversely, at low C0, n ZnO were almost entirely immobile in soil and the efflux of nZnO increased with C0 at all tested IS. In both media, the retention profiles (RPs) were generally hyper-exponentially shaped suggesting nZnO easily deposited near the column inlet. As indicated by DLVO calculations, previously deposited nZnO on the silica sand surface acted as new deposition sites due to the lower energy barrier (Φmax) between nZnO-nZnO than between nZnO-silica sand. However, previously deposited nZnO in soil could enhance Φmax between the soil surface and nZnO which resulted in unfavorable sites for nZnO deposition. The two-site kinetic attachment model provided good descriptions for the breakthrough curves of nZnO. Detachment was more significant than attachment in silica sand (k1d>k1a), whereas soil surface attachment of nZnO were strong and irreversible (k1a>k1d). The straining interaction parameter (k2str) increased with increasing C0 in silica sand, but decreased with C0 in soil. Such differences were mainly responsible for the various transport behaviors of nZnO in silica sand and soil.

Abstract:Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) are a common component of many commercial products. Due to the general concerns over the potential toxicity of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), the phytotoxicity and in planta accumulation of CeO2 NPs have been broadly investigated. However, most previous studies were conducted in hydroponic systems and with grain crops. For a few studies performed with soil grown plants, the impact of soil properties on the fate and transport of CeO2 NPs was generally ignored even though numerous previous studies indicate that soil properties play a critical role in the fate and transport of environmental pollutants. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the soil fractionation and bioavailability of CeO2 NPs to Raphanus sativus L (radish) in two soil types. Our results showed that the silty loam contained slightly higher exchangeable fraction (F1) of cerium element than did loamy sand soil, but significantly lower reducible (F2) and oxidizable (F3) fractions as CeO2 NPs concentration increased. CeO2 NPs associated with silicate minerals or the residue fraction (F4) dominated in both soils. The cerium concentration in radish storage root showed linear correlation with the sum of the first three fractions (r2 = 0.98 and 0.78 for loamy sand and silty loam respectively). However, the cerium content in radish shoots only exhibited strong correlations with F1 (r2 = 0.97 and 0.89 for loamy sand and silty loam respectively). Overall, the results demonstrated that soil properties are important factors governing the distribution of CeO2 NPs in soil and subsequent bioavailability to plants.
Transport and Retention Behavior of ZnO Nanoparticles in Two Natural Soils: Effect of Surface Coating and Soil Composition

Abstract:The widespread use of nanoparticles (NPs) in consumer goods could put these materials in the waste stream, potentially to soil and sediments. However, little is known about their transport in water and soils. In this study, transport behavior and attachment of ZnO NPs in soil components were studied through column experiments and sequential extraction, respectively. Bare and sodium citrate coated ZnO NP suspended in CaCl2 solutions at different ionic strengths, were passed through glass columns packed with sandy soils (SS) and sandy loam soils (SLS) and the effluents were analyzed by ICP-OES. The distribution of Zn in soil particles was studied by electron microprobe (EMP). Results showed that 99% of Zn/ZnO NPs was retained in SLS and 68% ~ 99% was retained in SS, for ionic strengths varying from 0 to 1 mM. Travel distances (cm) for bare ZnO NPs in SS and SLS were 19.2 and 5.3, respectively, while for coated NPs the distances were 21.4 and 6.9 cm, respectively. The surface coating reduced deposition rates from 0.73 to 0.65 and from 2.28 to 1.74 for SS and SLS, respectively. In both soils the amounts of uncoated NPs in the exchangeable fraction were less than 1%; however, 30% of coated NPs remained in the exchangeable fraction. EMP mapping showed that Zn/ZnO NPs associated with silica and aluminum, which are indicators of soil clay minerals. Long term observations are still needed to evaluate the bioavailability to plants of Zn released from coated and uncoated ZnO NPs.
Distinguishable Co-Transport Mechanisms of Phenanthrene and Oxytetracycline with Oxidized-Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Through Saturated Soil and Sediment Columns: Vehicle and Competition Effects.

Abstract:To date mechanisms underlying co-transports of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with contaminants have not been adequately explored, which involve complex interactions among ENMs, contaminants, and soils. This study investigated co-transport behaviors of 3 oxidized-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (o-MWCNTs) with phenanthrene (PHE) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in soil and sediment columns. Sorptions and desorptions of PHE and OTC by the o-MWCNTs were examined to facilitate the discussion of co-transport mechanisms. The results showed that mobilities of PHE and OTC in the columns were significantly enhanced by the presences of o-MWCNTs in the influents; the eluted o-MWCNTs were positively correlated to the eluted total PHE but negatively correlated to the eluted total OTC; the eluted PHE was mainly in the o-MWCNTs-associated form, while it was mainly the dissolved OTC breaking through the columns. It was thus concluded that the o-MWCNTs acted as vehicles facilitating the PHE transport, while besides the vehicle effect the o-MWCNTs also competed for the adsorption sites on soil particles with OTC and thereby enhancing the OTC mobility. These findings provide new insight into the mechanisms regulating co-transports of ENMs and contaminants in porous media.
Mobility of Cellulose Nanocrystals in Porous Media: Effects of Ionic Strength, Iron Oxides, and Soil Colloids

Abstract:Understanding the dispersivity and migration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in porous media is important for exploring their potential for soil and water remediation. In this study, a series of saturated column experiments were conducted to investigate the coupled effects of ionic strength, iron oxides (hematite), and soil colloids on the transport of CNCs through quartz sand and natural soils (red earth and brown earth). Results showed that CNCs had high mobility in oxide-free sand and that iron oxide coating reduced the mobility of CNCs. An analysis of Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek interactions indicated that CNCs exhibited a deep primary minimum, nonexistent maximum repulsion and secondary minimum on hematite-coated sand, favorable for the attachment of CNCs. The maximum effluent percentage of CNCs was 96% in natural soils at 5 mM, but this value decreased to 4% at 50 mM. Soil colloids facilitated the transport of CNCs in brown earth with larger effect at higher ionic strength. The ionic strength effect was larger in natural soils than sand and in red earth than brown earth. The study showed that CNCs can travel 0.2 m to 72 m in porous media, depending on soil properties, solution chemistry, and soil colloids.

Co-transport of Phenanthrene and Pentachlorophenol by Natural Soil Nanoparticles Through Saturated Sand Columns

Abstract:Mobile colloids such as nanoparticles (NPs) are often considered to affect the fate and transport of various contaminants by serving as carriers. Many studies have focused on the effect of engineered NPs on contaminant transport. To date, very little information is available on the co-transport of natural soil NPs with typical organic contaminants. This study investigated the co-transport of phenanthrene (PHE) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) by three soil NPs through saturated sand columns. Soil NPs with high organic matter and particle concentration were the most effective in transporting PHE through columns. In addition, soil NPs significantly increased the transport of low-level PHE (0.2 mg L-1) but there was no obvious increase at 1.0 mg L-1 PHE. This is attributed to a higher ratio of NP-associated PHE to total PHE at a low-level than at a high-level during transport. In contrast to PHE, the chemical speciation of PCP determined its mobility, which was highly dependent on solution pH. At pH 6.5, anionic PCP became dominant and soluble in the effluent. This could account for the negligible effect of soil NPs on PCP mobility. At pH 4.0, however, neutral molecular PCP dominated and, as expected, decreased mobility of PCP occurred. Soil NPs considerably enhanced the transport of neutral PCP in NP-associated forms compared to controls, due to the high hydrophobicity and sorption affinity of PCP to NPs. The mobility of soil NPs was little affected by PHE and PCP under tested conditions. This study indicated that highly mobile soil NPs may be effective carriers for organic contaminants and give a new direction to polluted site remediation by using a natural material, e.g., soil. Enhanced Transport of TiO 2 -Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites in Saturated Porous Media: the Impact of Loaded TiO 2 Shape and Solution Conditions

Abstract:Laboratory sand column experiments were conducted to model the transport behavior of TiO2 nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (TiO2 NP/rGO) and TiO2 nanowire-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (TiO2 NW/rGO) using different electrolyte solutions and pH values. The breakthrough curve of TiO2/rGO nanocomposite shows that the mobility is highly sensitive to ionic strength and pH. Experimental results found that the zeta potential of TiO2 NW/rGO is more negative due to more hydroxide ions in solution from the TiO2 NWs. The mobility of TiO2 NW/rGO is slightly greater than that of TiO2 NP/rGO at lower ionic strength (1–50 mM NaCl and 1–5 mM CaCl2), whereas at 10 mM CaCl2, TiO2 NW/rGO had weak transport because of physical straining. The ratio of the hydrodynamic diameter (4214 nm) to sand diameter was as high as 0.83. Mobility increased for both TiO2 NP/rGO and TiO2 NW/rGO with respect to ionic strength because of electrostatic repulsions. When the pH was 9 with a 10 mM NaCl background solution, the stronger energy barrier between the nanocomposite and sand contributed to the enhanced transport behavior. However, with a solution at pH 3–6, the ripening effect controlled the transport of TiO2 NW/rGO. The normalized concentrations rapidly climbed to a maximum (0.05 and 0.14) and then decreased gradually after 2 pore volumes. In general, these behaviors may well predict the fate of carbon-based nanoparticles with tailwater or wastewater flowing into soil environments.

Abstract:The rapid development of nanotechnology is accompanied by critical environmental risks that need to be addressed and effectively managed. A comprehensive understanding of environmental safety of nanoparticles will promote the sustainability of nanotechnology. Nano Ag particle ( AgNP ) is one of the most widely used manufactured metal?based nanoparticles in the world. In our proposal, AgNP was chosen as the typical manufactured metal?based nanoparticles, the migration and transformation of AgNP in typical Chinese soils will be investigated to explore the physicochemical interactions of AgNP with soil components, such as clay minerals and soil organic matter, and to study the bioavailability and toxicity of AgNP in soil matrices on soil micro?organisms, invertebrates and plants. The toxic effects of chronic/acute AgNP exposure on model soil inhabitants will be evaluated to establish dose?effect correlations, and to probe toxicity mechanism of AgNP . A mathematical model is further simulated to quantitatively assess AgNP migration and co?migration, retention flux in soil, and their consequential environmental risk. The results will provide the fundamental basis and technological support for the development of green nanotechnology.
Transport and Retention of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles under Unfavorable Deposition Conditions Caused by Repulsive Van Der Waals Force in Saturated Porous Media.

Abstract:Currently, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been widely used in industry, manufacturing and agriculture. The transport and retention of CuO NPs are vital to understanding the fate as well as the life cycle of CuO NPs in the environment. This study systematically investigates the transport and retention of CuO NPs in saturated porous media, and the experimental results were explained by the CFT and DLVO theory. The van der Waals force between CuO NPs and collector was repulsive, resulting in the unfavorable deposition condition. Column experiments were conducted with saturated quartz sand under environmentally relevant pH (6, 8, 9), ionic strength (IS, 1, 10, 50 mM), and humic acid (HA, 0.1-10 mg-C/mL). Experimental results show that the breakthrough curves (BCTs) were affected by different pH and IS. Under pH 6 and 9, the mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by high IS while the mobility was inhibited by high IS under pH 8. The mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by humic acid and the effect was best at 0.5 mg-C/mL HA. The experimental results were successfully explained by CFT and DLVO theory, the main mechanisms were aggregation of CuO NPs, interaction energy and collision between CuO NPs and collector. In general, these findings can improve our understanding of the transport and retention of CuO NPs in subsurface environments, and suggest pH, IS, HA may be key factors governing mobility and stability of CuO NPs in natural environment. Abstract:The effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on the transport of Cu through four different soil columns were studied. For two soils (HB and DX), TiO2 nanoparticles acted as a Cu carrier and facilitated the transport of Cu. For a third soil (BJ) TiO2 nanoparticles also facilitated Cu transport but to a much lesser degree, but for a fourth soil (HLJ) TiO2 nanoparticles retarded the transport of Cu. Linear correlation analysis indicated that soil properties rather than sorption capacities for Cu primary governed whether TiO2 nanoparticles-facilitated Cu transport. The TiO2-associated Cu of outflow in the Cu-contaminated soil columns was significantly positively correlated with soil pH and negatively correlated with CEC and DOC. During passage through the soil columns 46.6–99.9% of Cu initially adsorbed onto TiO2 could be “stripped” from nanoparticles depending on soil, where Cu desorption from TiO2 nanoparticles increased with decreasing flow velocity and soil pH.

Abstract:Transport of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in soil/sediment matrixes can regulate their potential eco-effects and has been however rarely studied. Herein, column experiments were conducted to investigate mobility of CNT suspensions stabilized by dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt (SDBS), octyl-phenol-ethoxylate (TX-100) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in four soil samples with certain particle sizes. Humic acid was extracted from a soil sample and was coated on quartz sands to explore the effect of soil organic matter (SOM) on the mobility. Results showed that the positively-charged CPC-CNT was entirely retained in the columns while the negatively-charged SDBS-CNT and TX-100-CNT more or less broke through the columns. Pearson correlation analyses revealed that soil texture rather than SOM controlled the mobility. Electrostatic attraction to and/or precipitation on the grain surfaces together with the straining effect could explain the CNT retention. These novel results will help to understand the eco-effects of CNTs.

Abstract:Because of its wide applications, nanosized titanium dioxide may become a potential environmental risk to soil and groundwater system. It is therefore important to improve current understanding of the environmental fate and transport of titanium oxides nanoparticles (TONPs). In this work, the effect of solution chemistry (i.e., pH, ionic strength, and natural organic matter (NOM) concentration) on the deposition and transport of TONPs in saturated porous media was examined in detail. Laboratory columns packed with acid-cleaned quartz sand were used in the experiment as porous media. Transport experiments were conducted with various chemistry combinations, including four ionic strengths, three pH levels, and two NOM concentrations. The results showed that TONP mobility increased with increasing solution pH, but decreased with increasing solution ionic strength. It is also found that the presence of NOM in the system enhanced the mobility of TONPs in the saturated porous media. The Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory was used to justify the mobility trends observed in the experimental data. Predictions from the theory agreed excellently with the experimental data.

Abstract:Agricultural soil is gradually becoming a primary sink for metal -based nanoparticles (MNPs). The uptake and accumulation of MNPs by crops may contaminate food chain and pose unexpected risks for human health. Here, we investigated the fate and transformation of CuO nano particles (NPs) in the soil -rice system during the rice lifecycle. The results show that at the maturation stage, 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs significantly decreased redox potential by 202.75 triV but enhanced electrical conductivity by 497.07 mS/cm compared to controls. Moreover, the bioavailability of highest CuO NPs in the soil was reduced by 69.84% along with the plant growth but then was significantly increased' y 165% after drying -wetting cycles. Meanwhile, CuO and Cu coMbined with humic acid were transformed to Cu2S and Cu associated with goethite by X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. AdditiOnally, CuO NPs had an acute negative effect on the plant growth than bulk particles, which dramatically reduced the fresh weight of grains to 6.51% of controls. Notably, CuO NPs were found to be translocated from soil to plant especially to the chaff and promoted the Cu accumulation in the aleurone layer of rice using micro X-ray fluorescence technique, but could not reach the polished rice.
Co-transport of Pb2+ and TiO2 Nanoparticles in Repacked Homogeneous Soil Columns under Saturation Condition: Effect of Ionic Strength and Fulvic Acid

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of suspended TiO2 nanoparticles (nTiO2) on the transport of Pb(2+) in saturated repacked soil columns under different ionic strengths (IS) and in the presence of fulvic acid (FA). Also, the contribution of soil colloids to the mobility of Pb(2+) was discussed. In the absence of nTiO2, little amount of Pb(2+) was detected in the effluent even in the presence of FA. However, the presence of nTiO2 significantly enhanced the mobility of Pb(2+) in soil columns under all tested conditions and nTiO2-associated Pb(2+) was the major migration species of Pb(2+). Increasing the solution IS decreased the nTiO2-associated Pb(2+) migration due to the significant decrease in the mobility of nTiO2 in soil. FA remarkably increased the nTiO2-associated Pb(2+) mobility in soil column, which was mainly to increase the mobility of nTiO2 in soil and decrease desorption rate of Pb(2+) from nTiO2 during transport. Moreover, nTiO2 significantly enhanced the release of Fe-Al soil colloids, which in turn was also responsible for the enhancement of Pb(2+) mobility in soil.
