Abstract:We consider the 3D Mikhalev system, $$ u_t=w_x, \quad u_y= w_t-u w_x+w u_x, $$ which has first appeared in the context of KdV-type hierarchies. Under the reduction $w=f(u)$, one obtains a pair of commuting first-order equations, $$ u_t=f'u_x, \quad u_y=(f'^2-uf'+f)u_x, $$ which govern simple wave solutions of the Mikhalev system. In this paper we study {\it higher-order} reductions of the form $$ w=f(u)+\epsilon a(u)u_x+\epsilon^2[b_1(u)u_{xx}+b_2(u)u_x^2]+..., $$ which turn the Mikhalev system into a pair of commuting higher-order equations. Here the terms at $\epsilon^n$ are assumed to be differential polynomials of degree $n$ in the $x$-derivatives of $u$. We will view $w$ as an (infinite) formal series in the deformation parameter $\epsilon$. It turns out that for such a reduction to be non-trivial, the function $f(u)$ must be quadratic, $f(u)=\lambda u^2$, furthermore, the value of the parameter $\lambda$ (which has a natural interpretation as an eigenvalue of a certain second-order operator acting on an infinite jet space), is quantised. There are only two positive allowed eigenvalues, $\lambda=1$ and $\lambda=3/2$, as well as infinitely many negative rational eigenvalues. Two-component reductions of the Mikhalev system are also discussed. We emphasise that the existence of higher-order reductions of this kind is a reflection of {\it linear degeneracy} of the Mikhalev system, in particular, such reductions do not exist for most of the known 3D dispersionless integrable systems such as the dispersionless KP and Toda equations.

Abstract:We propose a method for introducing higher-order terms in the potential expansion in order to study the continuum limits of the Toda hierarchy. These higher-order terms are differential polynomials in the lower-order terms. This type of potential expansion allows using fewer equations in the Toda hierarchy to recover the KdV hierarchy by the so-called recombination method. We show that the Lax pairs, the Poisson tensors, and the Hamiltonians of the Toda hierarchy tend toward the corresponding objects of the KdV hierarchy in the continuum limit. This method gives a kind of discretization of the KdV hierarchy.

Abstract:We study reductions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation corresponding to stationary equations for symmetries from the noncommutative subalgebra. An equivalent system of $n$ second-order equations is obtained, which reduces to the Painlevé equation P$_{34}$ for $n=1$. On the singular line $t=0$, a subclass of special solutions is described by a system of $n-1$ second-order equations, equivalent to the P$_3$ equation for $n=2$. For these systems, we obtain the isomonodromic Lax pairs and Bäcklund transformations which form the group ${\mathbb Z}^n_2\times{\mathbb Z}^n$.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the Painlevé reductions of coupled KdV systems. We start by comparing the procedure with that of stationary reductions. Indeed, we see that exactly the same construction can be used at each step and parallel results obtained. For simplicity, we restrict attention to the t2 flow of the KdV and DWW hierarchies and derive respectively 2 and 3 compatible Poisson brackets, which have identical structure to those of their stationary counterparts. In the KdV case, we derive a discrete version, which is a non-autonomous generalisation of the well known Darboux transformation of the stationary case.

Abstract:The main object of the paper is a recently discovered family of multicomponent integrable systems of partial differential equations, whose particular cases include many well-known equations such as the Korteweg--de Vries, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa--Holm, multicomponent Camassa--Holm, Dullin--Gottwald--Holm, and Kaup--Boussinesq equations. We suggest a methodology for constructing a series of solutions for all systems in the family. The crux of the approach lies in reducing this system to a dispersionless integrable system which is a special case of linearly degenerate quasilinear systems actively explored since the 1990s and recently studied in the framework of Nijenhuis geometry. These infinite-dimensional integrable systems are closely connected to certain explicit finite-dimensional integrable systems. We provide a link between solutions of our multicomponent PDE systems and solutions of this finite-dimensional system, and use it to construct animations of multi-component analogous of soliton and cnoidal solutions.

Abstract:We prove that the DR hierarchy corresponding to the family of F-cohomological field theories without unit considered in a previous work of the first author together with D. Gubarevich can be ``trivialized'', i.e. reduced to two copies of the KdV hierarchy, using a simple nonlinear reciprocal transformation. This gives the first manifestation of a role of nonlinear reciprocal transformation in the theory of integrable systems associated to the moduli spaces of stable curves, beyond the dispersionless limit.

Abstract:By applying the concept of geometric KdV flows into Kahler and para-Kahler manifolds, we give a unified geometric interpretation for the four typical integrable equations in the third-order system of the AKNS hierarchy. That is: the KdV equation, the mKdV equation, the complex mKdV(-) equation and the complex mKdV(+) equation are, respectively, equivalent to the first kind reduction, the second kind reduction of the geometric KdV flow of maps from R-1 to the de Sitter two-space S-1,S-1 curved right arrow R-2,R-1 (regarded as a para-Kahler manifold), the geometric KdV flow of maps from R1 to the hyperbolic two-space H-2 curved right arrow R-2,R-1 (regarded as a Kahler manifold of noncompact type) and the geometric KdV flow of maps from R-1 to the two-sphere S-2 curved right arrow R-3 (regarded as a Kahler manifold of compact type). This is an application of the general geometric KdV flows.
Negative flows of generalized KdV and mKdV hierarchies and their gauge-Miura transformations

Abstract:The KdV hierarchy is a paradigmatic example of the rich mathematical structure underlying integrable systems and has far-reaching connections in several areas of theoretical physics. While the positive part of the KdV hierarchy is well known, in this paper we consider an affine Lie algebraic construction for its negative part. We show that the original Miura transformation can be extended to a gauge transformation that implies several new types of relations among the negative flows of the KdV and mKdV hierarchies. Contrary to the positive flows, such a ``gauge-Miura'' correspondence becomes degenerate whereby more than one negative mKdV model is mapped into a single negative KdV model. For instance, the sine-Gordon and another negative mKdV flow are mapped into a single negative KdV flow which inherits solutions of both former models. The gauge-Miura correspondence implies a rich degeneracy regarding solutions of these hierarchies. We obtain similar results for the generalized KdV and mKdV hierachies constructed with the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{s\ell}(r+1)$. In this case the first negative mKdV flow corresponds to an affine Toda field theory and the gauge-Miura correspondence yields its KdV counterpart. In particular, we show explicitly a KdV analog of the Tzitzéica-Bullough-Dodd model. In short, we uncover a rich mathematical structure for the negative flows of integrable hierarchies obtaining novel relations and integrable systems.

Abstract:This paper begins with a review of the well-known KdV hierarchy, the $N$-th Novikov equation, and its finite hierarchy in the classical commutative case. This finite hierarchy consists of $N$ compatible integrable polynomial dynamical systems in $\mathbb{C}^{2N}$. We discuss a non-commutative version of the $N$-th Novikov hierarchy defined on the finitely generated free associative algebra ${\mathfrak{B}}_N$ with $2N$ generators. Using the method of quantisation ideals in ${\mathfrak{B}}_N$, for $N=1,2,3,4$, we obtain two-sided homogeneous ideals ${\mathfrak{Q}}_N\subset{\mathfrak{B}}_N$ (quantisation ideals) that are invariant with respect to the $N$-th Novikov equation and such that the quotient algebra ${\mathfrak{C}}_N = {\mathfrak{B}}_N/ {\mathfrak{Q}}_N$ has a well-defined Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis. This allows us to define the quantum $N$-th Novikov equation and its hierarchy on ${\mathfrak{C}}_N$. We derive $N$ commuting quantum first integrals (Hamiltonians) and represent the equations of the hierarchy in the Heisenberg form. Essential for our research is the concept of cyclic Frobenius algebras, which we introduced in our recent paper. In terms of the quadratic form that defines the structure of a cyclic Frobenius algebra, we explicitly express the first integrals of the $N$-th Novikov hierarchy in the commutative, free, and quantum cases.

Natural Model Reduction for Kinetic Equations

Abstract:A promising approach to investigating high-dimensional problems is to identify their intrinsically low-dimensional features, which can be achieved through recently developed techniques for effective low-dimensional representation of functions such as machine learning. Based on available finite-dimensional approximate solution manifolds, this paper proposes a novel model reduction framework for kinetic equations. The method employs projections onto tangent bundles of approximate manifolds, naturally resulting in first-order hyperbolic systems. Under certain conditions on the approximate manifolds, the reduced models preserve several crucial properties, including hyperbolicity, conservation laws, entropy dissipation, finite propagation speed, and linear stability. For the first time, this paper rigorously discusses the relation between the H-theorem of kinetic equations and the linear stability conditions of reduced systems, determining the choice of Riemannian metrics involved in the model reduction. The framework is widely applicable for the model reduction of many models in kinetic theory.

Abstract:The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy has infinitely many Hamiltonian pairs, the n(th) pair of them is associated with L(n), where L is the pseudodifferential operator (PDO) [3, 4]. In this paper, by the factorization L(n) = L(n) ... L(1) with L(j), j = 1,...,n being the independent PDOs, we construct the Miura transformation for the KP, which leads to a decomposition of the second Hamiltonian structure in the n(th) pair to a direct sum. Each term in the sum is the second structure in the initial pair associated with L(j). When we impose a constraint (1.9) (i.e. a new type of reduction) to the KP hierarchy, we obtain the similar results for the constrained KP hierarchy. In particular the second Hamiltonian structure for this hierarchy is transformed to a vastly simpler one.

Abstract:For a system of partial differential equations that has an extended Kovalevskaya form, a reduction procedure is presented that allows one to use a local (point, contact, or higher) symmetry of a system and a symmetry-invariant conservation law to algorithmically calculate constants of motion holding for symmetry-invariant solutions. Several examples including cases of point and higher symmetry invariance are presented and discussed. An implementation of the algorithm in Maple is provided.

Stationary Coupled KdV Hierarchies and Related Poisson Structures

Abstract:In this paper we continue our analysis of the stationary flows of $M$ component, coupled KdV (cKdV) hierarchies and their modifications. We describe the general structure of the $t_1$ and $t_2$ flows, using the case $M=3$ as our main example. One of our stationary reductions gives $N$ degrees of freedom, superintegrable systems. When $N=1$ (for $t_1$) and $N=2$ (for $t_2$), we have Poisson maps, which give multi-Hamiltonian representations of the flows. We discuss the general structure of these Poisson tensors and give explicit forms for the case $M=3$. In this case there are 3 modified hierarchies, each with 4 Poisson brackets. The stationary $t_2$ flow (for $N=2$) is separable in parabolic coordinates. Each Poisson bracket has rank 4, with $M+1$ Casimirs. The $4\times 4$ ``core'' of the Poisson tensors are nonsingular and related by a ``recursion operator''. The remaining part of each tensor is built out of the two commuting Hamiltonian vector fields, depending upon the specific Casimirs. The Poisson brackets are generalised to include the entire class of potential, separable in parabolic coordinates. The Jacobi identity imposes specific dependence on some parameters, representing the Casimirs of the extended canonical bracket. This general case is no longer a stationary cKdV flow, with Lax representation. We give a recursive procedure for constructing the Lax representation of the stationary flow for all values of $M$, {\em without} having to go through the stationary reduction.

Abstract:At the focus of the paper are applications of the well-known Moser transformation of the C. Neumann dynamical system. It yields us a new quadratic integrable dynamical system on $\mathbb{C}^{3n+1}$, which we call the Neumann-Moser dynamical system. We present an explicit formula of the inverse of the Moser transformation. Consequently, we obtain explicitly an invertible transformation of the Uhlenbeck-Devaney integrals of the Neumann system into the integrals of our system. One of the main results of the paper is the recurrent solutions of the Neumann-Moser system. We show that every solution of our system solves the Mumford dynamical system, and vice versa. Every solution of the Neumann-Moser system is proven to solve the stationary Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. As a corollary, we construct explicit solutions of the Neumann-Moser system in hyperelliptic Kleinian functions.

On a Hierarchy of Vector Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

Abstract:We propose a new hierarchy of the vector derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations and consider the simplest multiphase solutions of this hierarchy. The study of the simplest solutions of these equations led to the following results. First, the three-leaf spectral curves Γ={(μ,λ)} of the simplest multiphase solutions have a quite simple symmetry. They are invariant with respect to holomorphic involution τ. The type of this involution depends on the genus of the spectral curve. Or the involution has the form τ:(μ,λ)→(μ,−λ), or τ:(μ,λ)→(−μ,−λ). The presence of symmetry leads to the fact that the dynamics of the solution is determined not by the entire spectral curve Γ, but by its factor Γ/τ, which has a smaller genus. Secondly, it turned out that the dynamics of the two-component vector p=(p1,p2)t is determined, first of all, by the dynamics of its length |p|. Independent equations determine the dependence of the direction of the vector p from its length. In cases where the direction of the vector p is fixed, the corresponding spectral curve splits into separate components. In conclusion, we note that, as in the case of the Manakov system, the equation of the spectral curve is invariant with respect to the orthogonal transformation of the vector solutions. I.e., the solution can be found from the spectral curve up to the orthogonal transformation. This fact indicates that the spectral curve does not depend on the individual components of the solution, but on their symmetric functions. Thus, the spectral data of multiphase solutions have two symmetries. These symmetries make it difficult to reconstruct signals from their spectral data. The work contains examples illustrating these statements.
