Abstract:Biological structural materials realize outstanding mechanical properties by assembling hard and soft components into complex hierarchical structures, which provide abundant inspirations for synthetic materials. Specifically, conch shell exhibits around ten times higher toughness than widely‐explored nacre due to its cross‐lamellar architecture at nano‐ to macroscopic scales. Previously, conch‐shell‐inspired materials are realized by 3D‐printing. However, it remains challenging to translate the properties of conch shell into synthetic materials because of the limited approaches to duplicating complex architecture with high ceramic contents. Here, a surface‐pattern‐induced ice‐templating strategy is reported to fabricate conch‐shell‐inspired composites with a cross‐lamellar structure across a 107‐fold range of length. This is realized by directional freezing on a grooved surface, which has previously been confirmed to induce preferential ice growth. These composites have a flexural strength of 165 MPa and a work of fracture of 8.2 kJ m–2, which are 2.5 and 2 times, respectively, higher than those of conch shell. Such conch‐shell‐inspired structure yields a toughness twice that of nacre‐mimetic structure due to multiple crack deflections. Additionally, the impact resistance of these composites is comparable to those of aluminum alloys. The research provides a feasible approach to fabricating bioinspired materials with complex architectures and multifunctionality.
Structure and Roles of the Various Layers in the Shells of Conch Conus Litteratus

Abstract:Mollusc shells are renowned for their mechanical strength and toughness. To better understand the mineralization process of the shell, structure of the body whorl and base of Conus litteratus (Conus shell) were in detail investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. Three-point bending tests were taken to demonstrate that each layer of crossed-lamellar structures is indispensable to enhance the whole strength of the shells. The results show that the conch shell is composed of hierarchical structure from nano scale to macro scale, and the basic constituent is long rod-shaped aragonite. Different positions of the shell have varied structures, and the base is more complicated than the body whorl. The mechanical properties of Conus are highly anisotropic and the arrangement of middle layer has a great influence on the bending strength. The outer and inner layers are very thin but play a protective role for the middle layer.
Nanostructured individual nacre tablet: a subtle designed organic–inorganic composite

Abstract:From natural evolution, nacre, a biogenic organic-inorganic composite, fulfils an ingenious combination of remarkable strength and toughness. Its basic building block, the individual nacre tablet, assumes an important mechanical function. Unravelling its design strategies can hence provide essential information for the pursuit of high-performance artificial composites. Here, the nanostructure inside the individual nacre tablet (Pinctada maxima) was investigated using transmission electron microscopy techniques. Results show that organic matter is trapped inside the tablet in both an islet-like and sheet-like manner. More interestingly, the crystal structure of aragonite scaffold is continuous and homodromous throughout the whole tablet even in this case. A biomineralization mechanism of the tablet is discussed based on this finding.

Abstract:The sea urchin tooth is a biogenic grinding tool that exhibits unique mechanical properties during food biting and rock boring, while being almost entirely composed of intrinsically brittle CaCO3 (i.e., calcite). Revealing its underlying design can broaden the potential engineering applications of low-cost, brittle structural materials (e.g., ceramics). To this end, the present study investigated the deformed stone of a Glyptocidaris crenularis tooth using transmission electron microscopy. We observed multiple deformation mechanisms associated with its structural components, i.e., the single-crystalline microfiber, mesocrystalline matrix, and organic sheath. The fiber functioned via formation of e- and r-twins, with the matrix dissipating energy mainly by crack propagation; the organic sheath located between the fiber and matrix modulated the deformation of the mineral phases, contributing to energy dissipation and damage localization of the stone component of the tooth.

Abstract:Sea urchin teeth, which are used to Scrape rocks for food, assume significant mechanical functions: Unraveling their design strategies could provide inspiration for the pursuit of high-performance artificial composites. In this work, we Used scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark-field scanning trans': mission electron microscopy to probe the elaborate nano, structure in the stone part of Glyptocidaris crenularis tooth. Our results show that the mesocrystalline matrix, though diffracting as a single crystal, is composed of highly oriented nanocrystals and Shares almost coincident crystal orientation with its central single-crystal fiber. Interestingly, the fiber and matrix are fitted together by numerous single-crystal nanostrips rather than being completely separated by an organic sheath. This Sophisticated architecture may endow the tooth with sufficient structural stability to prevent catastrophic fractures.

Abstract:Despite being highly mineralized, the shells of molluscs exhibit superior strength and toughness because their architectural designs control the evolution of cracks and other types of localized deformation such as shear bands. The crossed-lamellar design of the shell of Strombus gigas , whose hierarchy consists of four distinct lamellar-shaped features assembled in a three-dimensional arrangement, represents the toughest of all seashells. A mechanical metamaterial that adapts the geometrical design of this queen conch is anticipated to circumvent the typical trade-offs between strength-ductility and strength-density. Inspired by the three-dimensional hierarchical and interactive architecture of the crossed-lamellar microstructure, we instruct the design of bio-inspired metamaterials that mitigate failure from the extension of a single shear band and instead develop numerous smaller bands confined within the individual plank-like zones introduced in their layered geometric design. The measured strength properties of these materials are found to increase in inverse proportion to the square root of the thickness of the layers in the hierarchy as a result of progressive deformation enabled by cross-layer interactions. The results provide a new perspective on the design of strong and tough mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:As a natural biocomposite, Strombus gigas, commonly known as the giant pink queen conch shell, exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, especially a high fracture toughness. It is known that the basic building block of conch shell contains a high density of growth twins with average thickness of several nanometres, but their effects on the mechanical properties of the shell remain mysterious. Here we reveal a toughening mechanism governed by nanoscale twins in the conch shell. A combination of in situ fracture experiments inside a transmission electron microscope, large-scale atomistic simulations and finite element modelling show that the twin boundaries can effectively block crack propagation by inducing phase transformation and delocalization of deformation around the crack tip. This mechanism leads to an increase in fracture energy of the basic building block by one order of magnitude, and contributes significantly to that of the overall structure via structural hierarchy.

Abstract:Composites produced in nature, such as mollusk shells, bones, etc., are renowned for their unique structures and excellent properties. In this paper the microstructure and mechanical properties of the shell of Conus betulina Linnaeus are investigated. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of the shell are anisotropic. After removal of the organic protein in the shell, the three-point bending strength significantly decreases, to about 1/20th or 1/30th of the original value. The organic matrix plays an important role in the hierarchical structure of the conch shells, as it promotes load transfer between adjacent aragonite layers.

Abstract:Marine shells are designed by nature to ensure mechanical protection from predators and shelter for mollusks living inside them. A large amount of work has been done to study the multiscale mechanical properties of their complex microstructure and to draw inspiration for the design of impact-resistant biomimetic materials. Less is known regarding the dynamic behavior related to their structure at multiple scales. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical study of the shells of two different species of gastropod sea snail belonging to the Turritellidae family, featuring a peculiar helicoconic shape with hierarchical spiral elements. The proposed procedure involves the use of micro-Computed Tomography scans for the accurate determination of geometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Nanoindentation to evaluate local mechanical properties, surface morphology and heterogeneity, as well as Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy coupled with Finite Element Analysis simulations to determine global modal behavior. Results indicate that the specific features of the considered shells, in particular their helicoconic and hierarchical structure, can also be linked to their vibration attenuation behavior. Moreover, the proposed investigation method can be extended to the study of other natural systems, to determine their structure-related dynamic properties, ultimately aiding the design of bioinspired metamaterials and of structures with advanced vibration control.

Abstract:Tridacna squamosa, Lamarck, 1819 (Bivalvia Cardiida Cardiidae, known as the fluted giant clam) is one of the largest-sized bivalve shells, which is equipped with a strong and tough bioceramic shell to effectively protect itself from the attack of predators. To better understand the mechanical defense mechanism, the relationship between the microstructure, composition, and mechanical properties of the Tridacna squamosa shell was investigated. We find that the Tridacna squamosa shell is composed of aragonite CaCO3 and a small portion of organic matter, which are well-arranged, assembling a multiscale, inhomogeneous, and anisotropic structure. Three levels of microstructure units are identified, including the smallest aragonite rods, medium sheets, and block-like lamellae. Such multiscale structures are the main contributor to creating abundant fracture surfaces much larger than the case for single mineral components, leading to multiple toughening mechanisms observed in Vickers indentation experiments, such as pulled-out of mineral platelet and crack deflection. The material inhomogeneity in the cross-sectional direction indicates that the material is stronger at the inner layer than that at the outer layer, which also facilitates an effective defense against the predator attack. This study may provide insights into the design of biomaterials with the desired mechanical properties.

Abstract:The observation of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the shell of a Chamidae shows that the shell is a kind of biocomposite consisting of aragonite layers with large volume fraction and collagen proteins with small volume fraction. Similar to man-made composites, the aragonite layers are parallel to the surface of the shell and consist of many long and thin aragonite sheets. The thickness of the aragonite sheets is within nanometer scale. It is also found that the aragonite sheets in different aragonite layers possess different orientations, which compose a kind of herringbone structure. The reason of the high stiffness of the shell is investigated based on the analysis of the proportion of the components in the shell. The origin of the high fracture toughness of the shell is explored from the comparison of the maximum pullout force of the herringbone structure with that of the parallel structure of the aragonite sheets. It is revealed that the large volume fraction of the aragonite endows the shell with high stiffness, and that the herringbone structure of the aragonite sheets endows the shell with high fracture toughness.

Abstract:Living organisms employ a key strategy to construct resilient load-bearing structures: the strategic layering of anisotropic elements. Natural biomineralized tissues showcase a remarkable attribute—an exact alignment of multiple building units, a quality notably absent in contemporary biomimetic reproductions. We demonstrate the fabrication of artificial shells by integrating vertically aligned TiO 2 nanorods into a polymer matrix atop clay multilayers. This approach combines chemical synthesis with molecular assembly to mimic the bilayer structure of mollusk shells, which consists of polygonal prismatic units on a brick-and-mortar architecture. Our study reveals a critical design principle for artificial shells through a combination of nanoindentation and finite element analysis. This design minimizes stress concentration factors at the interface and enhances penetration resistance, mainly attributed to the properties of the bottom layer. In comparing our artificial shells with their natural counterparts, we uncover additional design principles, such as hierarchical architecture and microscale prism size. These artificial shells possess the intriguing ability to partially self-heal due to a dynamic hydrogen bonding network. Furthermore, they can serve as humidity-sensitive actuators , with bending direction controlled by the aspect ratios of clay nanosheets. Our work offers valuable insights for the rational design of multifunctional, multilayer materials with enhanced impact resistance.

Abstract:Natural ultrathin flexible armor: Novel hierarchical microstructures composed of densely packed helical aragonite nanofibers were observed in an ultrathin pteropod shell by a combination of techniques. The helical nanofibers are interlocked and crystallographically aligned with a misorientation of up to 10°. These structural features may contribute to its advanced anisotropic mechanical properties.

Abstract:The hinge of bivalve shells can sustain hundreds of thousands of repeating opening-and-closing valve motions throughout their lifetime. We studied the hierarchical design of the mineralized tissue in the hinge of the bivalve Cristaria plicata, which endows the tissue with deformability and fatigue resistance and consequently underlies the repeating motion capability. This folding fan-shaped tissue consists of radially aligned, brittle aragonite nanowires embedded in a resilient matrix and can translate external radial loads to circumferential deformation. The hard-soft complex microstructure can suppress stress concentration within the tissue. Coherent nanotwin boundaries along the longitudinal direction of the nanowires increase their resistance to bending fracture. The unusual biomineral, which exploits the inherent properties of each component through multiscale structural design, provides insights into the evolution of antifatigue structural materials.
Nanoscale assembly processes revealed in the nacroprismatic transition zone of Pinna nobilis mollusc shells

Abstract:Intricate biomineralization processes in molluscs engineer hierarchical structures with meso-, nano-, and atomic architectures that give the final composite material exceptional mechanical strength and optical iridescence on the macroscale. This multiscale biological assembly inspires new synthetic routes to complex materials. Our investigation of the prism-nacre interface reveals nanoscale details governing the onset of nacre formation using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. A wedge polishing technique provides unprecedented, large-area specimens required to span the entire interface. Within this region, we find a transition from nanofibrillar aggregation to irregular early-nacre layers, to well-ordered mature nacre suggesting the assembly process is driven by aggregation of nanoparticles (~50-80 nm) within an organic matrix that arrange in fiber-like polycrystalline configurations. The particle number increases successively and, when critical packing is reached, they merge into early-nacre platelets. These results give new insights into nacre formation and particle-accretion mechanisms that may be common to many calcareous biominerals.

On the Mechanical Properties of Dual-scale Microlattice of Starfish Ossicles: A Computational Study

Abstract:While engineering cellular solids, either stochastic foams or architected lattices, are usually made of polycrystalline or amorphous materials, echinoderms (e.g., sea urchins, starfish, and brittle stars) build their microporous skeletal elements with single-crystalline calcite. This class of biomineralized cellular solid, known as stereom, also exhibits a vast diversity in pore morphology, ranging from random open-cell foams to fully periodic lattices. In particular, the skeletal elements of some starfish species, known as ossicles, are composed of a diamond-triply periodic minimal surface (diamond-TPMS) microlattice. In addition, the crystallographic symmetries at both atomic (calcite) and lattice (diamond-TPMS) levels are precisely aligned. Here we investigate the mechanical performance of this unique dual-scale microlattice and discuss the synergistic effects of atomic- and lattice-scale crystallographic coalignment. Our computational and theoretical analysis suggests that the mechanical isotropy of ossicles is significantly enhanced due to the property compensation between the atomic-level and lattice-level architectures. Moreover, the observed 50 vol% relative density in the diamond-TPMS microlattice of ossicles may be a result of achieving overall mechanical isotropy, minimal surface curvature, and maximized surface area. We believe the methodology introduced here will be useful for understanding the mechanical behavior of natural crystalline cellular solids such as echinoderms' stereom and designing dual-scale lattice materials.

Abstract:Researchers have discovered that the aragonite nanofibers are packed as highly ordered cross-lamellar structures in the shells of Giant clam Tridacna gigas and have excellent mechanical properties. However, differences in the microstructures and mechanical properties between different locations of the shells of Giant clams have not been reported. The microstructures of the shells and the relationship of the micro- and nanostructures and the mechanical properties of the different parts of the shells (main part and rib part) of another kind of Giant clam Tridacna crocea have not been reported yet. In this work, the multilevel ordered micro- and nanostructures in the main part and rib part of the shells of T. crocea were investigated in detail. It shows that both the main part and the rib part are composed of cross-lamellar structures, and the third-order structure (building units) are aragonite nanoribbons, which are densely packed as a self-locking mosaic. This is the first time to report that the building units for the aragonite cross-lamellar structures are nanoribbons instead of nanofibers, while the nanoribbons have particular structural features such as self-locking mosaic packing and dense packing phenomenon on the fractured section. Furthermore, we find that the angles between the long axes of the nanoribbons of the two sets of lamellar structures of the main part and the outer layer of the rib part vary from 120 to 100°, a novel structural feature for cross-lamellar structures. In addition, the mechanical properties such as flexural strength, compressive strength, hardness, and elastic modulus for the different cross sections of different parts of T. crocea were found to be different, and their relationship with the microstructures was studied and discussed. The flexural strength values of the horizontal planes of the main part and the outer layer rib part of the shells of T. crocea are 114.3 ± 2.49 and 118.0 ± 3.74 MPa, respectively, much higher than that of the longitudinal cross sections (79.0 ± 4.55 and 58.7 ± 1.25 MPa, respectively). The compressive strength tests show that the transverse cross sections of the main part and outer layer of the rib part have the highest compressive strength values (221.7 ± 4.82 and 153.3 ± 5.91 MPa, respectively), medium values for the longitudinal cross section (189.0 ± 7.87 and 126.3 ± 9.50 MPa, respectively), and the lowest values for the horizontal plane. The average hardness and elastic modulus values of the transverse and longitudinal cross sections of the rib part gradually increase from the outer to the inner layers. In this work, we show that the mechanical properties are strongly related to the different multilevel ordered assembly modes of micro- and nanostructures.

Abstract:Abstract While many organisms synthesize robust skeletal composites consisting of spatially discrete organic and mineral (ceramic) phases, the intrinsic mechanical properties of the mineral phases are poorly understood. Using the shell of the marine bivalve Atrina rigida as a model system, and through a combination of multiscale structural and mechanical characterization in conjunction with theoretical and computational modeling, we uncover the underlying mechanical roles of a ubiquitous structural motif in biogenic calcite, their nanoscopic intracrystalline defects. These nanoscopic defects not only suppress the soft yielding of pure calcite through the classical precipitation strengthening mechanism, but also enhance energy dissipation through controlled nano- and micro-fracture, where the defects’ size, geometry, orientation, and distribution facilitate and guide crack initialization and propagation. These nano- and micro-scale cracks are further confined by larger scale intercrystalline organic interfaces, enabling further improved damage tolerance.

Abstract:Mantis shrimps use their robust claws to repeatedly strike and break the shells of bivalves during predation without sustaining damage themselves. It appears to be a confrontation between the bouligand microstructure and the brick-and-mortar microstructure of the nacre layer. In the daily struggle for survival, defects are inevitably introduced. To elucidate the mechanical mechanisms exhibited by the two microstructures in the struggle for survival, thus a bold conjecture was proposed: the bouligand structure exhibits less sensitivity to random defects compared to the brick-and-mortar structure, enabling mantis shrimps to survive in the battle for existence. To verify this hypothesis, numerical models of bouligand and brick-and-mortar microstructures were established considering interfacial random defects. The results indicated that for various defect volume fraction, the bouligand structure demonstrates superior mechanical performance compared to the brick-and-mortar structure. In terms of peak load and damage dissipation energy, the bouligand structure exhibits higher tolerance to interfacial random defects than the brick-and-mortar structure, delaying the occurrence of damage in the Bouligand structure while prematurely inducing damage in the brick-and-mortar structure. This study not only reveals the mechanical mechanisms behind the advantages of biological microstructures in the struggle for survival but also provides technical references for future biomimetic microstructure designs.

Abstract:Natural structural materials with intricate hierarchical architectures over several length scales exhibit excellent combinations of strength and toughness. Here we report the mechanical response of a crossed-lamellar structure in Cymbiola nobilis shell via stepwise compression tests, focusing on toughening mechanisms. At the lower loads microcracking is developed in the stacked direction, and channel cracking along with uncracked-ligament bridging and aragonite fiber bridging occurs in the tiled direction. At the higher loads the main mechanisms involve cracking deflection in the bridging lamellae in the tiled direction alongside step-like cracking in the stacked direction. A distinctive crack deflection in the form of “convex” paths occurs in alternative lamellae with respect to the channel cracks in the tiled direction. Furthermore, a barb-like interlocking mechanism along with the uneven interfaces in the 1st-order aragonite lamellae is also observed. The unique arrangement of the crossed-lamellar structure provides multiple interfaces which result in a complicated stress field ahead of the crack tip, hence increasing the toughness of shell.
