Abstract:Alumina (Al 2 O 3 )-based polymer composites are used in various engineering applications, such as the automotive and aviation sectors, where it is very important to optimize both the mechanical (i.e., tensile, impact, hardness) and thermal properties. Thus, the main focus of this study is to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites using surface-modified Al 2 O 3 . The unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composite specimens were fabricated using the hand-layup method. This work significantly improved thermo-mechanical properties by adding varying percentages of modified Al 2 O 3 (0-3 wt.%). Samples were characterized using powder x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, atomic force microscope, Field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The thermo-mechanical characteristics of the composite specimens were examined through tensile, micro-hardness, impact and thermal analysis. Based on the examination responses, a statistical analysis was performed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) method to validate the statistical reasonability and linear regression analysis. The tensile strength, toughness, and micro-hardness of UCFA2 were enhanced by ~ 74, 36, and ~ 28% compared to the neat UCFRP composite. The UCF-reinforced composite exhibited improved mechanical properties and environmental stability, making them suitable for various engineering applications.
