Abstract:As the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) becomes more popular in various ocean applications, its navigation technique has attracted great attention since it is often crucial that the vehicle position be known precisely. Selection of a practical navigation scheme is a tradeoff between performance, space/power budget and cost. In this study, a low-cost, small-size navigation system for an AUV carrying synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) is presented. An integrated navigation method is also developed based on the extended Kalman filter, in which two novel processes, track-based compass calibration and adaptive beamforming-based SAS micro-navigation, are incorporated. For compass calibration, the heading bias caused by hard iron interferences is estimated through a surface calibration run; for displaced phase centre antenna-based micro-navigation, sway estimation is done by applying adaptive beamforming to the overlapped phase centre array. A number of AUV field tests were implemented and the results demonstrate that a relative navigation error of as low as 0.23% of the travelling distance in circular runs can be achieved using the developed approach.

Abstract:It is often crucial in most of today's Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) missions that the vehicle position be known precisely. Navigation performance of an Aided Inertial Navigation System (AINS) is always limited by the accuracy of sensors. In this paper we focus on enhancing performance of the AINS via micronavigation, which exploits a so-called Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA) technique. The method is tested on an AUV Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) test platform and the experimental results validate the effectiveness of the approach developed. Effect of the bottom fluctuations on the micronavigation performance is also studied.

Abstract:In general, the strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS)/Doppler velocity log (DVL)-integrated navigation method can provide continuous and accurate navigation information for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). This SINS/DVL fusion is the loosely integrated method, in which DVL may contain large error or does not work when some beam measurements are inaccurate or outages for complex underwater environment. To solve these problems, in this article, a novel tightly integrated navigation method composed of an SINS, a DVL, and a pressure sensor (PS) is proposed, in which beam measurements are used without transforming them to 3-D velocity. The simulation and vehicle test show that the proposed method can significantly outperform the traditional loosely integrated method in providing estimation continuously with higher accuracy when DVL data are inaccurate or unavailable for a complex environment. Compared with loosely integrated method, the position accuracy of the proposed method has improved by 32.5%.

Abstract:This paper reports the development and experimental evaluation of an in-situ calibration algorithm of the misalignment mounting angle matrix between the Strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and Doppler sensor which are practically used for accurate underwater navigation. Most previously reported methods required the SINS to be aligned first to output accurate attitude before the calibration. By separately treating the body frame and the navigation frame attitude update, the algorithm in this paper could be simultaneously carried out during the SINS attitude alignment stage. Simulation and experiment results show that the calibration could be done in 300 s and the position error during the navigation is less than 0.8% of the voyage distance.

Abstract:Precise autonomous navigation remains a substantial challenge to all underwater platforms. Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and Doppler Velocity Logs (DVL) have complementary characteristics and are promising sensors that could enable fully autonomous underwater navigation in unexplored areas without relying on additional external Global Positioning System (GPS) or acoustic beacons. This paper addresses the combined IMU/DVL navigation system from the viewpoint of observability. We show by analysis that under moderate conditions the combined system is observable. Specifically, the DVL parameters, including the scale factor and misalignment angles, can be calibrated in-situ without using external GPS or acoustic beacon sensors. Simulation results using a practical estimator validate the analytic conclusions.

Abstract:The GNSS/INS (Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Navigation System) navigation system has been widely discussed in recent years. Because of the unique INS-aided loop structure, the deeply coupled system performs very well in highly dynamic environments. In practice, vehicle maneuvering has a big influence on the performance of IMUs (Inertial Measurement Unit), and determining whether the selected IMUs and receiver parameters satisfy the loop dynamic requirement is still a critical problem for deeply coupled systems. Aiming at this, a new parameter self-calibration method based on the norm principle is proposed which explains the relationship between IMU precision and the velocity error of the system; the method will also provide a detailed solution to calculate the loop steady-state tracking error, so it will eventually make a judgment about the stability of the tracking loop under present system parameter settings. Lastly, a full digital simulation platform is set up, and the results of simulations show good agreement with the proposed method.

Abstract:In this article, an on-line calibration method for strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS)/Doppler velocity log (DVL) based integrated navigation system is proposed to jointly estimate the calibration parameters of SINS and DVL, where the DVL lever arm and gyroscope scale factor error are considered. The full-parameters, including the gyroscope scale factor error, gyroscope bias, accelerometer bias, DVL installation misalignment angle, and DVL lever arm, are modeled as calibration parameters. A new state–space model for on-line calibration of SINS/DVL integrated navigation system is established, which also introduces the measurements of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and celestial navigation system (CNS) to improve the observability of calibration parameters. To suppress the effects of nonlinear error introduced by large installation error between SINS and DVL, a full-parameters feedback correction scheme is proposed. In addition, a special trajectory for the proposed on-line calibration method is designed based on the observability analysis results and the actual motion conditions of the ship, which ensures those calibration parameters in the calibration model can be observed. Simulation results and semi-physical simulation results illustrate that the proposed on-line calibration method can achieve better calibration results than existing methods compared in this article, and the full-parameters can be jointly calibrated online, even in the case of large installation errors between SINS and DVL.

Abstract:In the underwater navigation system, the strap-down inertial navigation (SINS)/Doppler velocity log (DVL) system has the advantage of autonomy. However, affected by the measurement range of DVL, there are two operating modes: bottom-track and water-track. To solve the navigation continuity problem of SINS/DVL under different modes, an SINS/DVL navigation method aided ocean current is proposed in this article. On the one hand, according to different work modes of DVL, state space models based on bottom-track and water-track are established, respectively. In order to improve the model match, DVL scale factor error and ocean current information are considered separately in this article. On the other hand, in order to reduce the influence of complex noises, an improved variational Bayes adaptive Kalman filter (VBAKF) algorithm is proposed. Based on VBAKF, a noise estimator is introduced, and an adaptive adjustment factor is designed. The improved VBAKF can estimate measurement noise and system noise simultaneously. The results of simulation, vehicle, and river tests show that the proposed SINS/DVL method is effective and feasible. At the same time, the improved VBAKF algorithm can reduce external noise interference and improve navigation accuracy.

Abstract:Doppler velocity log (DVL) aided strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) is a common navigation method for underwater applications. Owing to the in-motion condition and the lack of the GPS, it is a challenge to align a SINS under water. This paper proposed a complete in-motion alignment solution for both attitude and position. The velocity update equation and its integral form in the body frame are studied, and the attitude coarse alignment becomes an optimization-based attitude determination problem between the body frame velocity and the integral form of gravity. The body frame velocity and the Earth frame position are separately treated, and the position alignment problem turns into an equation solving problem. Simulation and on-lake tests are carried out to examine the algorithm. The heading could reach around 10 deg accuracy and the pitch and roll could be aligned up to 0.05 deg in 60 s. With attitude error of this level, the heading could reach 1 deg accuracy in 240 s using unscented Kalman filter (UKF) based fine alignment. The final position error could achieve 1.5% of the voyage distance. This scheme can also be applied to other body frame velocity aided SINS alignments.

Abstract:The integrated navigation system (INS), which integrates the strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) and the Doppler velocity log (DVL), is widely used in the application of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation and positioning. However, due to the constraints imposed by the AUV’s size and system design, a coordinate system mismatch occurs between the DVL and SINS, which can be modeled as installation error (IE), including installation error angles and lever arm errors that significantly impact the system’s accuracy. To address these issues, we introduce an INS based on feedback error-state Kalman filter (ESKF) that accounts for DVL installation error (IE) and propose a DVL IE compensation method. This paper details the system design of the ESKF-based INS, including the coarse initial alignment of the moving base, fine alignment, mechanization, and data fusion. The proposed IE compensation method is designed to successively estimate and correct the DVL IE, utilizing the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) for observations, minimizing the error model output to estimate the IE value. Simulations and field experiments indicate that the cumulative accuracy has been improved by 50.3% after compensation. Finally, carried by a disc-shaped AUV, the ESKF-based INS with DVL IE compensation performs well in practical AUV navigation applications.

Abstract:With the aid of Doppler velocity logger (DVL), strapdown inertial navigation systems (SINS) can provide continuous and accurate navigation parameters for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). However, owing to the complex underwater environment, partial DVL beams may fail to be reflected by the seafloor, resulting in DVL measurement outage. In this study, a novel data-driven approach enhancing DVL/SINS integrated navigation system is proposed to improve the robustness and accuracy of UUV navigation with limited DVL beams. First, to make full use of the available beam, the velocities of DVL beams are used to assist the SINS navigation instead of the 3D velocity of DVL. Subsequently, a virtual beam predictor based on multi-output least-squares support vector regression (MLS-SVR) is built to run in parallel with the DVL/SINS integrated system. Specifically, when the DVL operates normally, all four beams can be applied for integrated navigation and stored as the training dataset. Once partial beams are missing, the available beams and the outputs of SINS and pressure sensor can train the MLS-SVR model along with the corresponding missing beam in the training set. Subsequently, the missing beams can be predicted by the trained model for integrated navigation together with the available beams. UUV sea trial indicate the proposed system can accurately predict the unavailable beams and improve the positioning accuracy of the DVL/SINS integrated navigation system.

Abstract:Because of the complex task environment, long working distance, and random drift of the gyro, the positioning error gradually diverges with time in the design of a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS)/Doppler velocity log (DVL) integrated positioning system. The use of velocity information in the DVL system cannot completely suppress the divergence of the SINS navigation error, which will result in low positioning accuracy and instability. To address this problem, this paper proposes a SINS/DVL integrated positioning system based on a filtering gain compensation adaptive filtering technology that considers the source of error in SINS and the mechanism that influences the positioning results. In the integrated positioning system, an organic combination of a filtering gain compensation adaptive filter and a filtering gain compensation strong tracking filter is explored to fuse position information to obtain higher accuracy and a more stable positioning result. Firstly, the system selects the indirect filtering method and uses the integrated positioning error to model the navigation parameters of the system. Then, a filtering gain compensation adaptive filtering method is developed by using the filtering gain compensation algorithm based on the error statistics of the positioning parameters. The positioning parameters of the system are filtered and information on errors in the navigation parameters is obtained. Finally, integrated with the positioning parameter error information, the positioning parameters of the system are solved, and high-precision positioning results are obtained to accurately position autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The simulation results show that the SINS/DVL integrated positioning method, based on the filtering gain compensation adaptive filtering technology, can effectively enhance the positioning accuracy.

Abstract:The integrated navigation of strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) and Doppler velocity log (DVL) has a common application in the positioning of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). However, DVL may be interrupted for a short time when part of the beam cannot receive the reflected signal and DVL measurement information is easily affected by underwater complex environment and contains outliers. To solve the above problems, a Doppler shift-aided coupled method of SINS/DVL integrated navigation with pare of DVL beam measurements outages based on dual adaptive factors is proposed. In this article, a tightly coupled approach for SINS/DVL based on Doppler shifts is proposed to solve the short-term failure problem caused by the lack of part measurement in DVL. Then, a chi-square detection-aided dual factors' adaptive filter is used to suppress the outliers. The dual factors are used to adjust the influence of imprecise information of dynamic model and observation model error. The chi-square detection is used to judge the outliers of measurements and the result of judgment is regarded as the precondition of factor selection. In order to verify the robustness of the proposed algorithm to outliers, simulation and Yangtze River experiments are carried out. The results of simulation and river experiments indicate that the tightly coupled approach obtains higher accuracy compared with the loosely coupled model and the proposed adaptive filter can effectively suppress the outliers. The method proposed in this article can achieve greater robustness in AUV underwater complex environment.

Abstract:Inertial navigation system/Doppler velocity log (INS/DVL) integrated navigation is a mature underwater navigation method, where the initial alignment is a critical stage in its application. Alignment accuracy and alignment time are the main challenges for improving alignment performance. In this article, the initial attitude estimation errors caused by acoustic outliers and limited observation time will be primarily investigated. To address this problem, a novel robust coarse alignment method is designed based on a globally optimal model, providing sufficient accuracy of initial attitude for fast alignment during the fine alignment stage. In addition, to achieve fast dynamic alignment in a limited observation information environment, a dynamic alignment model based on time sequence reconstruction is proposed. The algorithm has been validated through simulations and field tests, demonstrating comparable accuracy to the current state-of-the-art approach as well as exhibiting better robustness and faster alignment speed under dynamic conditions.

Abstract:Due to the errors of the accelerometer and gyroscope, the position and the velocity calculated by the inertial navigation system (INS) are divergent with time. We can normally estimate and compensate the errors of the INS using the underwater sensors. However, the underwater sensors such as ultrashort baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning system and Doppler velocity log (DVL) are challenged by the complex environment, which affects the reliability and the accuracy of data processing. From the gravimetry error equation, the horizontal position errors have little influence on the underwater gravimetry. Observability analysis indicates that the velocity error and the position error can be well estimated on the condition of only positional observations in the Kalman filter. Based on these, we proposed a novel method using the INS and depth gauge (DG) based on trajectory constraint without USBL and DVL. In this method, we considered to fit the track of the gravimeter to a straight line because the gravimeter maintains uniform motion in the measuring line and take the fit line and the depth measured by the DG as the observations to correct the errors of the INS. We constructed an underwater experiment in 2019 to test the novel method. The test results showed a repeatability from 1.24 to 2.03 mGal for the space resolution of 200 m. The new method can acquire a good accuracy and can be applied to the gravimetry data processing.

Abstract:The integration of strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) with a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) has been proven to be a reliable technique for land vehicle localization. To enhance the positioning accuracy of the SINS/LDV integrated navigation system, accurate calibration is essential. Hence, this paper proposes a robust position observation-based calibration method for the SINS/LDV integrated navigation system. In this method, the calibration process is partitioned into two phases: coarse calibration and fine calibration. In the coarse calibration phase, an analytical calibration method is adopted, and in the fine calibration phase, a robust Kalman filter is first designed to obtain the accurate vehicle attitude and position. Then, another Kalman filter is designed using an LDV error propagation model based on position observation to further calibrate the SINS/LDV integrated navigation system. To reduce the effect of the non-holonomic constraint assumption violation on the calibration results during vehicle turning, z-gyro and LDV velocity outputs are used to detect whether the vehicle changes direction and to compensate for the lateral velocity of the LDV in the LDV frame when the vehicle changes direction. The performance of the proposed method is verified by two groups of vehicle field tests. The results show that the proposed method has higher calibration accuracy and stronger robustness than three other compared methods. In the two groups of tests with total mileage of 76.9km and 65.34km, the maximum dead reckoning horizontal positioning errors of the SINS/LDV integrated navigation system calibrated with the proposed method are 6.61m and 10.91m, respectively.

Abstract:The rapid and accurate initial alignment of a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) aided by a Doppler velocity logger (DVL) still poses a significant challenge in unmanned underwater vehicle navigation. In this study, a novel adaptive nonlinear filtering alignment scheme is developed for a SINS with a large misalignment angle. In previous studies, the frame-inconsistency problem of the nonlinear SINS error model was neglected. Thus, a modified nonlinear error model of a SINS is derived here rigorously as the process model of the nonlinear Kalman filter. In addition, the noise amplification of applying Sage-Husa adaptive Kalman filter (SHAKF) in alignment is analyzed, and a novel arctangent fading memorial factor is introduced to dynamically adjust the weight of current measurements. Simulations and field experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm is efficient in underwater DVL/SINS in-motion alignment. The alignment accuracy and convergence rate of the modified model are significantly improved compared to those of the traditional model. The arctangent fading memorial SHAKF can reliably estimate the measurement noise and improve the performance of alignment.

Abstract:With the advantages of high velocity measurement accuracy and fast dynamic response, the laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is expected to replace the odometer to be combined with a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) to form a higher precision integrated navigation system. However, LDV scale factor error and misalignment angles between LDV and inertial measurement unit will affect the accuracy of navigation. Considering that not all global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers can directly provide velocity information and current mainstream calibration methods are sensitive to the measurement noise and outliers of velocity and position information, a robust calibration method aided by GNSS is proposed in this paper, which is based on position observation. Different from current popular calibration methods, the attitude information of the GNSS/SINS integrated navigation system obtained by an adaptive Kalman filter is used to construct the observation vector together with LDV velocity outputs and GNSS position outputs in this method. The LDV scale factor error and the misalignment angle are determined by the ratio of two observation vector modulus and the Davenport's q-method method, respectively. The accuracy and robustness of the calibration method are verified by one vehicle test with normal GNSS signals and one vehicle test with GNSS signals with outliers. And the horizontal position error of dead reckoning of the calibrated LDV/SINS integrated system are less than 0.0314% and 0.1033% of the mileage, respectively.
An effective LS-SVM/AKF aided SINS/DVL integrated navigation system for underwater vehicles

Abstract:In order to combat the severity of the impact of short-term failure Doppler velocity log (DVL), we propose a machine learning (ML) aided method for strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS)/DVL integration solution. First, the inherent relationship between the underwater vehicle's dynamics characteristic and the SINS's velocity error is established through the learning methodology of the least square support vector machine (LS-SVM), and the prediction and compensation are performed during the failure period of the DVL. When the DVL signal is normal, the LS-SVM model is trained, the adaptive Kalman filtering (AKF) is adopted in the SINS/DVL integrated navigation system, the filtering estimation value is used to correct the SINS's navigation calculation value. When the DVL signal is invalid, the variation of underwater vehicle movement is taken as the input of the LS-SVM model. Land vehicle field experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the LS-SVM/AKF algorithm aided SINS/DVL integrated navigation system. The results indicate that the proposed methodology can improve the accuracy of the SINS/DVL integrated navigation system during short-term failure of DVL.

Abstract:In the underwater dynamic gravimetry, gravimetry system consists of strapdown gravimeter based on inertial navigation system (INS), Doppler velocity log (DVL), depth gauge (DG), and ultrashort baseline acoustic positioning system (USBL). Among them, INS provides the attitude and specific force; the velocity and depth are given by DVL and DG, respectively; the position is measured by USBL. However, USBL is challenged by the underwater extreme environment. We analyzed the underwater gravimetry errors and found that horizontal position errors have no great contribution to gravity calculation. Thus, a new method based on integrated navigation combining INS, DVL, and DG is proposed without USBL. To evaluate the availability of the new method, an underwater gravimetry experiment was constructed in 2018. Test results using the proposed method show that the internal accuracies of two measuring lines are 1.06 and 0.89 mGal, respectively, with a spatial resolution of about 250 m. Compared with the method based on integrated navigation combining INS, DVL, USBL, and DG, the new method can reach comparable accuracy and meet the requirement of seafloor resource exploration.
