Abstract:Based on a survey on 960 residents in Zhejiang, Henan and Sichuan provinces who have already migrated from rural to urban, this paper uses the binary logic regression model to analyze the intentions of migrating again of these migrants.Based on analysis above, the descriptive statistics reveal that 69.69% of them are reluctant to move into other places mainly for the livelihood, while 30.31% of them are willing to move again when considering economic reasons.In addition, judging from the total samples of the three provinces, there are six results:①Women always possess a stronger willingness to migrate than men did.②The age of these migrates has a significant negative impact on willingness of moving again, and some elder ones prefer to live in these original cities.③Because of the difficulties of taking care of the aged parents` health and children`s education, the families with three generations have more willingness to migrate than the single families.④The handicraftsmen do not want to move to other cities since their advantages of skills could be the guarantee for living, while the village cadres really want to.⑤The total annual income of one household has a significant positive effect on the desire to move again.⑥There are some obvious differences among Zhejiang, Sichuan and Henan just because they belong to the east, middle and west regions respectively, such as the differences in socio-economic, income and cultural attitudes.Last but not least, we can also draw five conclusions in terms of provincial comparison:①Gender, work life and family type can be the significant factors both in Zhejiang and Sichuan` models, but in the opposite direction.②The type of work affects these three provinces at the same time, but there still are some differences.③Residents in Henan aren`t sensitive to the change of the total annual income of the families, while those in Sichuan and Zhejiang provinces are significantly positive to the changes.④Number of years for migrating has a significant positive impact on Henan Province, while the opposite to the other provinces.⑤The models in Zhejiang and Sichuan explain the fact that if the residents prefer not to move when they feel more satisfied with the government.This paper argues that the governments should play an important role in guiding in the process of promoting the new urbanization which is human-centered.They should concern about the reasonable needs of the residents who have already moved into the city, such as the needs on economy, sociality, education, social security and other aspects, as well as pay more attention to the differences on socioeconomic and cultural concepts between different regions.What`s more, we should formulate innovative migration-related systems and implement the relevant security policies are also important.
Research on the Intergenerational Differences Between Migrant Workers---Based on Wage Determination and Willingness of Staying in the City

Abstract:Based on CHIP data executed in 2003 and 2008,this paper conducts a comparative study on the intergenera-tional differences and time-point differences between the first and second generation of migrant workers by the perspectives of wage determination and willingness of staying in the city.The regression results show that there is no significant difference between two generations in wage determination and willingness of staying in the city,and migrant workers as a whole still heavily rely on job mobility to improve their income level.Specifically,the second generation of migrant workers have higher levels of education,especially in 2008,but there is no significant intergenerational difference on return of education or im-provement over time.Both generations rely on job mobility to raise their income level,which is even more prominent in 2008, without apparent intergenerational differences,also showing high willingness to stay in the city in two survey years.Main fac-tors that affect the migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city show the features of time-point differences rather than in-tergenerational differences.Migratory job mobility do no good for the second generation migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city in 2008.Besides,the income levels of cities,pension,health care and other social undertakings development level are the important factors that affect the whole migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city.

Abstract:Based on a survey of 1 325 farmer households in Zhejiang,Sichuan and Henan Province,this paper use logistic regression models to emprical analyze the migration intentions of rural households in three provinces chosen from Central,Eastern and Western of China.The result shows that age,numbers of students and Hukou policy have a significant negative impact on migration intention.Duration of education and total household income have a positive significant impact.Social network and One Child policy have no significant impact on migration intention.The analysis of different provinces shows that:duration of education,duration of working,Hukou policy,age and total household income have a significant impact on migration intention.However,there is regional heterogeneity in the three provinces.Based on the empirical study,this paper puts forward some policy implications.

Abstract:Introduction: With China embracing a new people-centered urbanization stage, the problem of migrants "flowing without moving" has become increasingly prominent, and settlement intention has gradually garnered attention. Methods: Our research, based on questionnaire data from the China Labor Force Dynamic Survey 2016, uses a multilevel linear regression model to explore the influence of mobility, social environment, built environment, and demographics characteristics on settlement intention in the migrants and discusses differences between settlement intention of new and old generations and their internal influence mechanism. Results: The findings are as follows: (1) Compared to the old generation, the new migrant generation generally has higher settlement intention. (2) The migrants' settlement intention is influenced mainly by mobility, social environment, built environment, and demographic characteristics. (3) For the new migrant generation, social and demographic characteristics significantly influence their settlement intention. (4) The floating and built environment of the old generation significantly influence their settlement intention. Discussion: Finally, this paper argues that there are differences in the influence mechanism of the same factors on the settlement intention of the new and old generations of migrants. It proposes differentiated policy suggestions for the migrants to promote city social integration. Abstract:PURPOSE The aim of this study was to define the scales and test the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ)-H&N35, a questionnaire designed to assess the quality of life of head and neck (H&N) cancer patients in conjunction with the general cancer-specific EORTC QLQ-C30. PATIENTS AND METHODS Questionnaires were given to 500 H&N cancer patients from Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands as part of two prospective studies. The patients completed the questionnaires before, during (Norway and Sweden only), and after treatment, yielding a total of 2070 completed questionnaires. RESULTS The compliance rate was high, and the questionnaires were well accepted by the patients. Seven scales were constructed (pain, swallowing, senses, speech, social eating, social contact, sexuality). Scales and single items were sensitive to differences between patient subgroups with relation to site, stage, or performance status. Most scales and single items were sensitive to changes, with differences of various magnitudes according to the site in question. The internal consistency, as assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient, varied according to assessment point and within subsamples of patients. A low overall alpha value was found for the speech and the senses scales, but values were higher in assessments of patients with laryngeal cancer and in patients with nose, sinus, and salivary gland tumors. Scales and single items in the QLQ-H&N35 seem to be more sensitive to differences between groups and changes over time than do the scales and single items in the core questionnaire. CONCLUSION The QLQ-H&N35, in conjunction with the QLQ-C30, provides a valuable tool for the assessment of health-related quality of life in clinical studies of H&N cancer patients before, during, and after treatment with radiotherapy, surgery, or chemotherapy.
Economic development level and urban settlement intentions of the new-generation migrants in China: direct or interaction effect?

Abstract:Based on a theoretical framework, this paper uses a multilevel model to examine the factors that correlate with the settlement intentions of China’s new-generation migrants. The level of regional economic development exerts not only random effects, but also an interaction effect with social integration on urban settlement intentions. Economic factors, including household income and home ownership, have a significant positive correlation with settlement intentions, while social characteristics such as social integration and social identification also have a positive correlation with the settlement intentions of new-generation migrants. Moreover, family migration strategies, parental migration experiences, short migration distances, and long migration durations enhance urban settlement intentions. The settlement intentions exhibit significant inter-group differences between the migrants born in the 1980s and in the 1990s. Differences in the effects of the determinants are observed between these group samples and the total sample.

Abstract:The massive scale of new-generation rural-urban migrants in China has attracted extensive scholarly attention in recent years. While previous studies on China’s rural migrant workers focus on migrants’ individual settlement intentions, migrant’s family migration decision-making and the intergenerational differences between the old-generation migrants and new-generation migrants are underexplored. Based on the data of 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this paper adopts a multilevel logistic regression approach to explore family and destination factors influencing family migration decision of China’s new generation rural migrant workers. The empirical results reveal that both the migrants’ family and destination attributes significantly influence their family migration decision. The demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of family have been pivotal factors underlying family migration decision of China’s new generation rural-urban migrants, while 16.9% of the chances is explained by between-destination differences. Self-employed migrants with housing properties in host cities, long migration duration and high-income level are more likely to migrate with their family members. Yet, the possibility of family migration is found to be significantly and negatively correlated with the age, education level, number of children and inter-provincial mobility of the new generation migrant workers. In addition, new generation rural-urban migrants’ family migration is more likely to be found in cities with service-oriented industry structure, better environmental quality, and higher hukou barriers which is possibly related to more job opportunities. These research findings not only complement the existing literature on China’s new generation rural-urban migrants, but also have important policy implications for reforming hukou system and enhancing social integration of rural-to-urban migrant population.

Abstract:The international literature has continuously debated over what factors – economic incentives or socio-cultural conditions – are more important when migrant populations make settlement vs. return migration decisions. China's urbanization policy recently took a sharp turn toward encouraging full integration and permanent settlement of rural migrants in cities. Yet policymaking to date has relied on limited empirical evidence on determinants of migrant settlement intention. Using data derived from a twelve-city survey conducted in 2009, this paper investigates the extent to which economic incentives and socio-cultural conditions may determine the settlement intention of rural migrants in urban China. Regression analysis reveals that, although migrants with better human capital are more inclined to settle down in cities, socio-cultural attachment plays an equally, if not more important role in determining migrant settlement intention. Meanwhile, while the settlement intention of the first-generational migrants is more driven by the socio-cultural conditions, economic incentives are more important for the new-generation rural migrants. We thus call for more targeted policy design that takes into account such intergenerational differences.

Abstract:Three decades since the first wave of rural-urban migration, the new generation of migrant workers has become the main force of internal migration in China. The present paper comprehensively explores the profiles of the new generation of migrant workers in urban China. We find that the new generation migrants are more educated and skilled, and are likely to work in manufacturing and service industries than in the construction industry. Moreover, they tend to allocate more time to non-farm activities and have more months away from home per year in urban areas. In contrast to their predecessors, they tend to migrate to urban areas with their spouses, consume more in urban areas and send less money back home. Our findings suggest that the differences in features between the new generation of rural migrants and urban residents have become smaller and the integration of rural migrants into urban China has taken place gradually.

Abstract:This study explores the factors influencing the migration intentions of the new generation of migrant workers from the perspective of employment quality. Utilizing differential analysis, correlation analysis, and the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) model, this study analyzes data on hukou transfer intention obtained through an exploratory questionnaire survey. The results indicate significant differences in migration intentions among new-generation migrant workers differentiated by job industry, job position, gender, household registration type, and housing type. Additionally, age, the number of local family members, and housing satisfaction are strongly correlated with migration intentions. Path analysis reveals that employment stability, income–expenditure match, and social integration significantly positively affect migration intentions. This research provides a unique perspective on employment quality and offers theoretical foundations for policies related to migrant workers' hukou transfer intention.

Abstract:Using data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this paper provides new evidence on the impact of rural land transfer on urban settlement intentions of rural migrants. There was a rural land system reform in rural China that provided increased compensation for rural land expropriation and allowed the transaction of collective construction land for business purposes. We determine an increase in urban settlement intentions of rural migrants following the reform as an exogenous change in rural land transfer of rural migrants. We examine two mechanisms that may explain how the reform increased the settlement intentions of rural migrants, and our empirical evidence suggests that the reform increased social integration and reduced rural place attachment of rural migrants. Furthermore, we determine variations in the effect of the reform across migrants of various ages, social security benefits, and migration distances. Overall, this study extends the implications of the market-oriented rural land reform to sustainable and inclusive urbanization and highlights the role of social integration and rural place attachment in migration decisions.

Abstract:Well-developed cities have long featured as favoured destinations for Chinese migrant workers. In recent years, however, the incidence of return migration has increased in China, with a significant impact on economic development and social governance at both the origins and destinations. Owing to the limited availability of data, the return intentions of migrant workers at the national level have gone largely unexplored. Using data from the 2016 China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), the study investigates the return intentions of migrant workers residing in destination cities. Econometric data analysis indicates that family connections (i.e. family members living together, and whether to migrate with children) and housing factors (i.e. housing ownership, housing expenditure proportion, housing tenure, and group living) have significant effects on return intentions and that social and spatial factors (i.e. type of industry, employment status, insurance coverage, migration distance, and duration of stay) also play significant roles. Our results point as well to the influence of geographical location on return intentions. The study concludes with recommendations regarding the formulation of population management policies.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of urban–rural integration development in China, the government has further strengthened its support for rural migrant workers' urban employment and entrepreneurship, as well as their urbanization. Nevertheless, influenced by the current urban–rural development environment and public policies, a portion of rural migrant workers have evolved into two distinct groups: those with clear intentions to settle in cities or return to their hometowns and those trapped in a "neither-nor" situation, who are unable to fully integrate into urban life or seamlessly return to the countryside. This study, based on field investigations conducted in 21 cities across seven major geographical regions in China, reveals a ternary differentiation in migration intentions among rural migrant workers: "Retain in the cities", "Return flow", and "Blind direction". In advancing the urban–rural integration strategy, the "clearly-oriented" groups, choosing to stay or return, can serve as dynamic forces in reconciling resources between urban and rural areas, thereby fostering closer urban–rural ties. Conversely, the "aimless wandering" group, characterized by stagnation, confusion, frequent mobility, and recurrent unemployment, poses numerous negative impacts on urban–rural interaction and coordination, hindering the in-depth integration of urban and rural areas to some extent. Drawing upon the internationally recognized Push-Pull Theory and Social Integration Theory within the field of population migration, this study conducts an empirical analysis of large-scale sample data to explore the characteristic factors and formation mechanisms underlying the "staying", "returning", and "blind direction" intentions, with a particular focus on the internal dynamics shaping and evolving the "aimless wandering" group. Finally, grounded in the empirical findings, this study advocates a collaborative approach between the Chinese government and various sectors of society to address the issue by promoting employment guidance, enhancing security measures, and other initiatives that encourage rural migrant workers to either stay in cities or return to their hometowns. It aims to provide policy recommendations for a definitive resolution of the rural migrant worker issue during the crucial period of urban–rural integration development.

Abstract:In the urbanisation stage of bilateral urban–rural interaction, China is adopting various policies to achieve rural revitalisation and provide diverse destinations to which farmers can migrate. Most previous studies have focused on urban destinations; thus, new countryside locations are not as well understood in this context. This study focused on first migration practices to examine new countryside destinations for farmers in China. This study established a conceptual framework to explain the diverse migration destination options based on three aspects: human capital, economic characteristics, and social characteristics. Based on survey data from farming households in a traditional agriculture area in Xinxiang, a multiple logit model was used to examine why new countryside destinations were adaptive first migration destinations. The results indicated that farmers were influenced by land capital and low initial household incomes. Specifically, many farmers were attracted to new countryside locations close to their original villages because of the need for cultivated land and farming, thus providing a logical first move in the rural–urban migration process. Poorer households were willing to first improve their living conditions in this way. This suggests that new countryside construction can help achieve rural revitalisation.

Abstract:Based on the employment surveys migrant workers from Zhejiang in Hangzhou City,the paper analyzed the generational differences in the employment of migrant workers.First of all,descriptive statistics on the individual characteristics,socio-economic characteristics,and employment status of two generations of migrant workers were conducted;then followed by F test,T test,and range test on the independent samples to verify the existence of significant differences in two generations of peasant workers in wages and benefits,occupation,expected future employment.Quality-related analysis was conducted to verify whether the age difference of migrant workers influences the purpose of motivation,employment channels,the most important employment difficulties encountered.The results showed that there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in wages,multiple occupation,and work experience;and there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in the motive and purpose of flow and the employment channels.

Abstract:This study examines the settlement intentions of migrants based on original survey data collected from four large Chinese cities. Despite the long-lasting institutional effects of the hukou (household registration) system, market mechanisms are becoming increasingly important in affecting migrant settlement intentions. Although rural hukou holders are more likely to return to their places of origin, migrants who have received higher education, who are self-employed or who own homes are more willing to permanently settle in cities. The influences of market mechanisms are also reflected in recent policy reforms related to education, housing and the hukou system.

Abstract:This paper investigates the association between hometown landholdings and rural migrants’ intentions to integrate in their destination societies in Chinese cities. We argue that hometown landholding affects rural migrants’ integration intention through the asset effect, security effect and emotional attachment effect. The empirical work based on a large national micro-level data extracted from the 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) shows that, rural migrants who possess contracted farmland but no homestead land in hometown have the highest level of integration intention, followed by those without any land, those with both types of land, and finally those with homestead land only. Such findings suggest that the possession of farmland tends to boost rural migrants’ integration intention while the possession of homestead land appears to have a depressing effect. However, the depressing effect of homestead land on average dominates the boosting effect of farmland. Further analysis shows that, the positive effect of farmland is strengthened when the asset function of contracted farmland is strong, while the negative effect of homestead land is reduced when migrants have purchased housing in the host cities. The paper also identities the mediating effect of local social security insurance in the impacts of hometown landholding on rural migrants’ integration intentions as well as the heterogeneity of such impacts across age-cohorts and subgroups associated with different connection levels to hometowns.

Abstract:Urbanization in China has accelerated since its reform and opening policy in 1978. The driving forces of the movement from rural areas to cities in current literature include job opportunities, family income, housing conditions, and city size. It remains an open question whether son preference, one of the oldest issues in Chinese culture, impacts rural floating parents' willingness to settle in urban areas. This study examines this question using the 2017 China Migration Dynamic Monitoring Survey (CMDS) data. We find that parents' decisions to provide their sons with better education, help their sons buy houses, and raise their sons to care for them in old age are important channels to enhance parents' willingness to settle in urban areas.

Self-employment and Intention of Permanent Urban Settlement: Evidence from a Survey of Migrants in China’s Four Major Urbanising Areas

Abstract:Drawing on a survey of migrants in 12 cities across four major urbanising areas in China, this paper analyses rural migrants’ intention for permanent urban settlement. We focus on one sizeable but often overlooked group of rural migrants, that is, the self-employed. Our hypothesis is that the self-employed migrants tend to have stronger intention for permanent urban settlement since they are usually more ingrained in urban economy and society. The empirical evidence supports our hypothesis. Moreover, the social and economic choices made by the self-employed migrants are consistent with their expressed intentions: they are more likely to migrate with spouses and to live with their family members, more likely to have a plan for house purchase in cities; they are also more integrated into urban society in terms of learning local dialects and making friends with local permanent residents.
