Abstract:In previous work, all finite simple groups that act with fixity 4 have been classified. In this article we investigate which ones of these groups act faithfully on a compact Riemann surface of genus at least 2 with fixity four in total and in such a way that fixity 4 is exhibited on at least one orbit.

Abstract:We show that a profinite group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are metabelian, is either virtually pro-$p$ or virtually soluble of derived length at most 4. We furthermore show that a prosoluble group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are soluble of bounded derived length, is either soluble or virtually pro-$p$.

Abstract:Let H and T be subgroups of a finite group G. We say that H is completely c-permutable with T in G if there exists an element x ∈ 〈H,T〉 such that HTx= TxH. In this paper, we use this concept to determine the supersolubility of a group G = AB, where A and B are supersoluble subgroups of G. Some criterions of supersolubility of such groups are obtained and some known results are generalized.

Abstract:A remarkable result of Thompson states that a finite group is soluble if and only if its two-generated subgroups are soluble. This result has been generalized in numerous ways, and it is in the core of a wide area of research in the theory of groups, aiming for global properties of groups from local properties of two-generated (or more generally, $n$-generated) subgroups. We contribute an extension of Thompson's theorem from the perspective of factorized groups. More precisely, we study finite groups $G = AB$ with subgroups $A,\ B$ such that $\langle a, b\rangle$ is soluble for all $a \in A$ and $b \in B$. In this case, the group $G$ is said to be an $\cal S$-connected product of the subgroups $A$ and $B$ for the class $\cal S$ of all finite soluble groups. Our main theorem states that $G = AB$ is $\cal S$-connected if and only if $[A,B]$ is soluble. In the course of the proof we derive a result of own interest about independent primes regarding the soluble graph of almost simple groups.

Abstract:Assume that a finite group G admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH with kernel F and complement H such that C_G(F)=1. In this paper, we investigate this situation and prove that if C_G(H) is supersoluble and C_G'(H) is nilpotent, then G is supersoluble. Also, we show that G is a Sylow tower group of a certain type if C_G(H) is a Sylow tower group of the same type.

Abstract:In this paper,we prove that a finite group with exactly two conjugacy classes of non-nilpotent maximal subgroups is solvable.Furthermore,we give an equivalent characterization of a finite non-solvable group with exactly two classes of non-nilpotent maximal subgroups of the same order.

Abstract:We study infinite approximate subgroups of soluble Lie groups. Generalising a theorem of Fried and Goldman we show that approximate subgroups are close, in a sense to be defined, to genuine connected subgroups. Building up on this result we prove a structure theorem for approximate lattices in soluble Lie groups. This extends to soluble Lie groups a theorem about quasi-crystals due to Yves Meyer.

Abstract:We characterize some classes of finite soluble groups. In particular, we prove that: a finite group $G$ is supersoluble if and only if $G$ has a normal subgroup $D$ such that $G/D$ is supersoluble and $D$ avoids every chief factor of $G$ between $V^{G}$ and $V_{G}$ for every maximal subgroup $V$ of the generalized Fitting subgroup $F^{*}(G)$ of $G$; a finite soluble group $G$ is a $PST$-group (that is, Sylow permutability is a transitive relation on $G$) if and only if $G$ has a normal subgroup $D$ such that $G/D$ is nilpotent and $D$ avoids every chief factor of $G$ between $V^{G}$ and $V_{G}$ for every subnormal subgroup $A$ of $G$.

Solvable Groups and Affine Actions on the Line

Abstract:We prove a structural result for orientation-preserving actions of finitely generated solvable groups on real intervals, considered up to semi-conjugacy. As applications we obtain new answers to a problem first considered by J. F. Plante, which asks under which conditions an action of a solvable group on a real interval is semi-conjugate to an action on the line by affine transformations. We show that this is always the case for actions by $C^1$ diffeomorphisms on closed intervals. For arbitrary actions by homeomorphisms, for which this result is no longer true (as shown by Plante), we show that a semi-conjugacy to an affine action still exists in a local sense, at the level of germs near the endpoints. Finally for a vast class of solvable groups, including all solvable linear groups, we show that the family of affine actions on the line is robust, in the sense that any action by homeomorphisms on the line which is sufficiently close to an affine action must be semi-conjugate to an affine action. This robustness fails for general solvable groups, as illustrated by a counterexample.

Abstract:It is shown by means of a generalization of a result of R. Baer and D. H. McLain that if G is a locally polycyclic group and if the chief factors of every finitely generated subgroup of G have finite rank at most equal to r, then every maximal subgroup of G has index dividing the r th power of some prime. This answers a question about locally supersoluble groups raised by the first author. In addition, examples are furnished to show that neither of the properties "all chief factors are finite" and "all maximal subgroups have finite index" implies the other.

Abstract:Abstract A finite group G is said to be a PST -group if every subnormal subgroup of G permutes with every Sylow subgroup of G . We shall discuss the normal structure of soluble PST -groups, mainly defining a local version of this concept. A deep study of the local structure turns out to be crucial for obtaining information about the global property. Moreover, a new approach to soluble PT -groups, i.e., soluble groups in which permutability is a transitive relation, follows naturally from our vision of PST -groups. Our techniques and results provide a unified point of view for T -groups, PT -groups, and PST -groups in the soluble universe, showing that the difference between these classes is quite simply their Sylow structure.
