Abstract:These notes are an expanded version of lectures given at the 2022 TASI summer school in Boulder, Colorado. One goal of these lecture notes is to (partially) bridge the gap between what one learns in typical introductory quantum field theory classes and what one needs to understand to follow modern developments in particle theory beyond the Standard Model. Topics covered include global and gauge symmetries, charge quantization, instantons, chiral anomalies, the Strong CP problem, axion models from 4d and from higher dimensions, the expected absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity, and some phenomenological implications thereof. If these topics seem to be at best loosely related, I hope that reading the notes will convince you otherwise. Recent developments in quantum field theory have shown that ordinary gauge theories exhibit a much wider range of (generalized) global symmetries than were previously understood, while recent work in quantum gravity has provided sharper arguments that global symmetries should not exist. This sets up an interesting tension, the resolution of which can have implications for particle physics in the real world. Axion physics is one setting in which these ideas can guide phenomenology. The TASI audience comprised particle phenomenology students whom I hoped to convince of the importance of learning more about quantum field theory and quantum gravity. These notes may also be of interest to formal theory readers seeking closer connections to real-world particle physics.

Abstract:These lectures provide an introduction to the physics of particle colliders. Topics covered include a quantitative examination of the design and operational parameters of Large Hadron Collider, kinematics and observables at colliders, such as rapidity and transverse mass, and properties of distributions, such as Jacobian peaks. In addition, the lectures provide a practical introduction to the decay modes and signatures of important composite and elementary and particles in the Standard Model, from pions to the Higgs boson. The aim of these lectures is provide a bridge between theoretical and experimental particle physics. Whenever possible, results are derived using intuitive arguments and estimates rather than precision calculations.

Abstract:The field of experimental particle physics studies the fundamental particles and forces that constitute matter and radiation. Frequently the experimental tools used to enable this study are accelerators and detectors. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the highest energy proton-proton accelerator currently operating and where the ATLAS and CMS collaboration discovered and are currently studying the properties of the Higgs boson. These notes provide a short introduction to accelerators and detectors using the LHC and its detectors as examples. The detector section will focus on two types of detectors extensively used today: tracking detectors and calorimeters. The notes will then discuss the algorithms used to process the information from the detectors and how that information is used for physics analysis using the search for the decay of the Higgs boson to bottom quarks.

Abstract:These lecture notes on the particle physics and astrophysics of dark matter (DM) were delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future." The focus of these lecture notes, aimed at the level of advanced graduate students and beginning postdocs, is on indirect (i.e., astrophysical and cosmological) probes of particle DM models. While DM models and indirect detection are broadly discussed, the examples of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and axions are worked out in detail. The topics covered include: the role of DM in the cosmology and astrophysics of structure formation, including DM density profiles in galaxies, general constraints on particle DM models, the theory of minimal DM, with the higgsino as a relevant and illustrative example, indirect detection with gamma-rays, including with the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, axions as a solution to the strong-CP problem and a DM candidate, including discussions of possible ultraviolet completions and of axion string cosmology, and astrophysical probes of axions such as with isocurvature perturbations, $N_{\rm eff}$, black hole superradiance, radio telescopes, spectral modulations, stellar polarization, and stellar cooling, amongst other topics. Example Jupyter notebooks are provided that walk the reader through relevant analyses, including an example statistical analysis of a DM annihilation search towards the Segue I dwarf galaxy with gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope that is relevant for DM explanations of the Fermi Galactic Center Excess. We also provide an introduction to frequentist statistics for particle and astro-particle physics. These lecture notes are meant to be pedagogical, with the focus on explaining the underlying physical principles and analysis techniques that are set to play crucial roles in the search for particle DM in the coming decade.

The H1 Silicon Vertex Detector

Abstract:The design, construction and performance of the H1 silicon vertex detector is described. It consists of two cylindrical layers of double sided, double metal silicon sensors read out by a custom designed analog pipeline chip. The analog signals are transmitted by optical fibers to a custom designed ADC board and are reduced on PowerPC processors. Details of the design and construction are given and performance figures from the first data taking periods are presented.

Unfolding Particle Physics Hierarchies with Supersymmetry and Extra Dimensions

Abstract:This is a written version of lectures delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future''. Mechanisms and symmetries beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are presented capable of elegantly and robustly generating the striking hierarchies we observe in particle physics. They are shown to be among the central archetypes of quantum effective field theory and to strongly resonate with the tight structure and phenomenology of the Standard Model itself, allowing one to motivate, develop and test a worthy successor. The (Little) Hiearchy Problem is discussed within this context. The lectures culminate in specific BSM case-studies, gaugino-mediated (dynamical) supersymmetry breaking to generate the weak/Planck hierarchy, and (in less detail) extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps to generate flavor hierarchies.

Abstract:These lectures, presented at TASI 2016: Anticipating the Next Discoveries in Particle Physics, provide an introduction to some key methods and tools of indirect dark matter searches. Topics covered include estimation of dark matter signals, thermal freezeout and related scenarios, potential effects of dark matter annihilation on the early universe, modeling photon signals from annihilation or decay, and a brief and qualitative introduction to diffusive propagation of cosmic rays. The second half of the notes gives a status report (circa summer 2016) on selected experimental searches, the resulting constraints and some potential signal candidates. These notes are intended as an introduction to indirect dark matter searches for graduate students, focusing on back-of-the-envelope estimates and useful concepts rather than detailed quantitative computations.

The focus is on the question: how might one obtain robust, generic predictions. For example, does the theory predict low energy supersymmetry breaking? Abstract:These notes are based on lectures I gave at TASI 2024 on Physics for Machine Learning. The focus is on neural network theory, organized according to network expressivity, statistics, and dynamics. I present classic results such as the universal approximation theorem and neural network / Gaussian process correspondence, and also more recent results such as the neural tangent kernel, feature learning with the maximal update parameterization, and Kolmogorov-Arnold networks. The exposition on neural network theory emphasizes a field theoretic perspective familiar to theoretical physicists. I elaborate on connections between the two, including a neural network approach to field theory.

Abstract:These lectures, presented at the 2022 TASI summer school, give an introductory overview of first-order phase transitions in the early Universe, baryogenesis, and the resulting gravitational wave phenomenology. We introduce thermal field theory via the imaginary time formalism, and comment on the pitfalls of 1-loop calculations and alternative approaches. Then, we discuss how to calculate the false vacuum decay rate in first order phase transitions, of which we give various examples in theories beyond the Standard Model. Baryogenesis is presented via the Sakharov conditions, and how they are met in important classes of examples. Finally, we explore gravitational waves from the early Universe, first reviewing the basics of gravitational wave generation and then focusing on the specific example of first order phase transitions.

Abstract:This write-up of lectures given at TASI 2020 provides an introduction into precision tests of the electroweak Standard Model. The lecture notes begin with a hands-on review of the (on-shell) renormalization procedure, and subsequently highlight a few subtleties that occur in the renormalization of a theory with electroweak symmetry breaking and massive gauge bosons. After that a set of typical electroweak precision observables is introduced, as well as a range of input parameter measurements that are needed for making predictions within the Standard Model. Finally, it is discussed how comparisons of the electroweak precision observables between experiment and theory can be used to stress-test the Standard Model and probe new physics.
