Abstract:This study explores the application of Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool for safety training in high-risk industrial settings, specifically focusing on the IPLOM refinery, Busalla (Italy). As industries increasingly adopt digital tools to enhance safety and operational efficiency, VR provides a risk-free, immersive environment for training operators in emergency protocols. This project developed a VR simulation using Unreal Engine and Meta Quest headsets to mirror refinery conditions, including equipment handling, emergency response procedures, and spatial navigation. Integrated tools, such as multi-gas detectors and evacuation drills, allow users to practice real-world tasks virtually, enhancing procedural knowledge and spatial awareness. The simulation's design allows for future integration with Augmented Reality (AR) to enable real-time equipment monitoring and data overlays, enhancing on-site decision-making. Feedback from initial testing shows high user satisfaction and increased confidence in emergency response skills, indicating the effectiveness of VR in safety training. This VR approach offers a scalable, adaptable model for refining industrial training, reducing physical risks and costs associated with traditional drills, and setting a foundation for the use of immersive technologies in other high-risk sectors.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to improve the effectiveness of employee safety training through virtual reality (VR) technology in high - risk industrial environments, especially in view of the specific situation of the IPLOM refinery. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Reducing risks in actual operations**: Traditional safety training usually involves practical drills, which may bring certain safety hazards. VR provides a risk - free immersive environment, allowing employees to practice emergency response procedures in a virtual environment, thereby reducing the possibility of being exposed to real dangers. 2. **Enhancing training effectiveness and efficiency**: By simulating real - life industrial environments, including equipment operation, emergency response procedures, and spatial navigation, VR can enhance employees' operating skills and spatial awareness. The paper mentions that integrated tools such as multi - gas detectors and evacuation drills can enable users to train for actual tasks in a virtual environment, thus improving their coping abilities. 3. **Reducing costs**: Traditional on - site drills not only pose safety risks but also involve high costs, such as venue rental and equipment preparation. VR training can be repeated indefinitely in a virtual environment, greatly reducing training costs. 4. **Enhancing adaptability and scalability**: The VR training system can be customized and expanded according to different industrial scenarios. In the future, it can also be combined with augmented reality (AR) technology to achieve real - time equipment monitoring and data overlay, further enhancing on - site decision - making capabilities. ### Specific problem summary - **How to provide safe and effective training in high - risk industrial environments?** - **How to use VR technology to simulate complex industrial operations and emergency response procedures?** - **How to improve employees' emergency handling abilities and spatial awareness through VR training?** - **How to reduce the costs and risks of traditional training?** - **How to design a scalable and adaptable VR training system to meet the needs of different industrial scenarios?** The solution of these problems will help improve safety and operational efficiency in industrial environments and provide a model for other high - risk industries to draw on.
