Abstract:We show that any infinite algebraic subgroup of the plane Cremona group over a perfect field is contained in a maximal algebraic subgroup of the plane Cremona group. We classify the maximal groups, and their subgroups of rational points, up to conjugacy by a birational map.

Abstract:We prove that any finitely generated subgroup of the plane Cremona group consisting only of algebraic elements is of bounded degree. This follows from a more general result on `decent' actions on infinite direct sums. We apply our results to describe the degree growth of finitely generated subgroups of the plane Cremona group.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group. Under a mild number-theoretic condition involving the order and dimension of the plane, the translation complement must contain a linear cyclic subgroup that either is transitive or has two equal-sized orbits on the line at infinity. We develop a new approach to the study of such planes by associating them with planar functions and permutation polynomials in the odd order and even order case respectively. In the odd order case, we characterize the Kantor–Suetake family by using Menichetti's classification of generalized twisted fields and Blokhuis, Lavrauw and Ball's classification of rank two commutative semifields. In the even order case, we develop a technique to study permutation polynomials of DO type by quadratic forms and characterize such planes that have dimensions up to four over their kernels.

Abstract:We show that for any $n\geq5$ there exist connected algebraic subgroups in the Cremona group $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^n)$ that are not contained in any maximal connected algebraic subgroup. Our approach exploits the existence of stably rational, non-rational threefolds.

Abstract:The plane Cremona group over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_2$ is generated by three infinite families and finitely many birational maps with small base orbits. One family preserves the pencil of lines through a point, the other two preserve the pencil of conics through four points that form either one Galois orbit of size 4, or two Galois orbits of size 2. For each family, we give a generating set that is parametrized by the rational functions over $\mathbb{F}_2$. Moreover, we describe the finitely many remaining maps and give an upper bound on the number needed to generate the Cremona group. Finally, we prove that the plane Cremona group over $\mathbb{F}_2$ is generated by involutions.

Abstract:Given a field $K$, we investigate which subgroups of the group Aut$\mathbb{A}^2_K$ of polynomial automorphisms of the plane are linear or not. The results are contrasted. The group Aut$\mathbb{A}^2_K$ itself is nonlinear, except if $K$ is finite, but it contains some large "finite-codimensional" subgroups which are linear. This phenomenon is specific to dimension two: it is easy to prove that any "finite-codimensional" subgroup of Aut$\mathbb{A}^3_K$ is nonlinear, even for a finite field $K$. When ch$K = 0$, we also look at a similar questions for f.g. subgroups, and the results are again disparate. The group Aut$\mathbb{A}^2_K$ has a one-related f.g. subgroup which is not linear. However, there is a large subgroup, of "co-dimension-three", which is locally linear but not linear. This paper is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Jacques Tits.

Abstract:In this note we investigate the centraliser of a linearly growing element of $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ (that is, a root of a Dehn twist automorphism), and show that it has a finite index subgroup mapping onto a direct product of certain "equivariant McCool groups" with kernel a finitely generated free abelian group. In particular, this allows us to show it is VF and hence finitely presented.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with subgroup $H$, and let $(\pi,V)$ be a complex representation of $G$. The natural action of the normalizer $N$ of $H$ in $G$ on the space $\mathrm{Hom}_H(\pi,\mathbb{C})$ of $H$-invariant linear forms on $V$, provides a representation $\chi_{\pi}$ of $N$ trivial on $H$, which is a character when $\mathrm{Hom}_H(\pi,\mathbb{C})$ is one dimensional. If moreover $G$ is a reductive group over a local field, and $\pi$ is smooth irreducible, it is an interesting problem to express $\chi_{\pi}$ in terms of the possibly conjectural Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ of $\pi$. In this paper we consider the following situation: $G=\mathrm{GL}_m(D)$ for $D$ a central division algebra of dimension $d^2$ over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero, $H$ is the centralizer of a non central element $\delta\in G$ such that $\delta^2$ is in the center of $G$, and $\pi$ has generic Jacquet-Langlands transfer to $\mathrm{GL}_{md}(F)$. In this setting the space $\mathrm{Hom}_H(\pi,\mathbb{C})$ is at most one dimensional. When $\mathrm{Hom}_H(\pi,\mathbb{C})\simeq \mathbb{C}$ and $H\neq N$, we prove that the value of the $\chi_{\pi}$ on the non trivial class of $\frac{N}{H}$ is $(-1)^m\epsilon(\phi_\pi)$ where $\epsilon(\phi_\pi)$ is the root number of $\phi_{\pi}$. Along the way we extend many useful multiplicity one results for linear and Shalika models to the case of non split $G$. When $F$ is $p$-adic we also classify standard modules with linear periods and Shalika models, which are new results even when $D=F$.

Abstract:A classical problem in finite group theory dating back to Jordan, Klein, E. H. Moore, Dickson, Blichfeldt etc. is to determine all finite subgroups in SL(n, C) up to conjugation for some small values of n. This question is important in group theory as well as in the study of quotient singularities. Some results of Blichfeldt when n = 3 4 were generalized to the case of finite primitive subgroups of SL(5, C) and SL(7, C) by Brauer and Wales. The purpose of this article is to consider the following case. Let p be any odd prime number and G be a finite primitive subgroup of SL(p, C) containing a non-trivial monomial normal subgroup H so that H has a non-scalar diagonal matrix. We will classify all these groups G up to conjugation in SL(p, C) by exhibiting the generators of G and representing G as some group extensions. In particular, see the Appendix for a list of these subgroups when p = 5 or 7.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically integral curve defined over a perfect field $\mathbb{F}$. Let $k=\mathbb{F}(\mathcal{C})$ be the function field of $\mathcal{C}$. Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a split simply connected semisimple $\mathbb{Z}$-group scheme. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite set of places of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, we investigate on the conjugacy classes of maximal unipotent subgroups of $\mathcal{S}$-arithmetic subgroups. These are parameterized thanks to the Picard group of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{S}}$ and the rank of $\mathbf{G}$. Furthermore, these maximal unipotent subgroups can be realized as the unipotent part of natural stabilizer, which are the stabilizers of sectors of the associated Bruhat-Tits building. We decompose these natural stabilizers in terms of their diagonalisable part and unipotent part, and we precise the group structure of the diagonalisable part.
