Abstract:We investigate how to protect quantum correlations for two qubits each locally interacting with its own non-Markovian environment by making use of bang-bang pulses. It is shown that the quantum discord dynamics presents the phenomenon of sudden change for some certain initial states. We also find that the amount of quantum correlation between two qubits can be improved by applying a train of pulses and protected more effectively with shorter interval pulses or longer reservoir correlation time.

Abstract:Due to the interaction with the environment, a quantum state is often affected by the different types of noises which becomes to one of the biggest problems for practical quantum computation. We study the possibility of protecting the mixed state of a quantum system that goes through noise by weak measurements and control operations. The aim is to find the optimal measurement strength and control operations and make the input and output states as close as possible. We show that our scheme can effectively protect arbitrary mixed states against typical types of noise sources: amplitude damping, phase damping and amplitude-phase damping. The optimal measurement and control operators are deduced in different bases of the Bloch sphere to find the best control scheme for each type of noise. The effectiveness of our control scheme is demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:The continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional graph of odd number of sites with an on-site potential at the center is studied. We show that such a quantum-walk system can construct an X-gate of a single qubit as well as a control gate for two qubits, when the potential is much larger than the hopping strength. We investigate the decoherence effect and find that the coherence time can be enhanced by either increasing the number of sites on the graph or the ratio of the potential to the hopping strength, which is expected to motivate the design of the quantum gate with long coherence time. We also suggest several experimental proposals to realize such a system.

Abstract:Hybrid systems consisting of different types of qubits are promising for building quantum computers if they combine useful properties of their constituent qubits. However, they also pose additional challenges if one type of qubits is more susceptible to environmental noise than the others. Dynamical decoupling can help to protect such systems by reducing the decoherence due to the environmental noise, but the protection must be designed such that it does not interfere with the control fields driving the logical operations. Here, we test such a protection scheme on a quantum register consisting of the electronic and nuclear spins of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The results show that processing is compatible with protection: The dephasing time was extended almost to the limit given by the longitudinal relaxation time of the electron spin.

Abstract:In practical applications, quantum systems work in a finite-temperature environment. Quantum entanglement is inevitably destroyed by the thermal noise. Here we experimentally demonstrate the protection of entanglement on the platform of linear optics. The finite-temperature thermal noise is described by the generalized amplitudedamping channel. By performing optimal pre- and postchannel weak measurements, we successfully protect the entanglement from the generalized amplitude-damping channel. Compared with the unprotected case, the quantum coherence is recovered, and the entanglement is enhanced. The demonstrated protocol may have further applications in superconducting quantum qubits.
Protect Measurement-Induced Phase Transition from Noise

Abstract:Measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT) is a novel non-equilibrium phase transition characterized by entanglement entropy. The scrambling dynamics induced by random unitary gates can protect information from low-rate measurements. However, common decoherence noises, such as dephasing, are detrimental to the volume law phase, posing a significant challenge for observing MIPT in current noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Here, we demonstrate that incorporating quantum-enhanced operations can effectively protect MIPT from environmental noise. The conditional entanglement entropy is associated with a statistical mechanics model wherein noise and quantum-enhanced operations act as two competing external random fields. Then we show that an average apparatus-environment exchange symmetry ensures the conditional entanglement entropy is a valid probe of entanglement. Furthermore, we provide numerical evidence on a (2+1)-d quantum circuit under dephasing noise, demonstrating that MIPT can indeed be observed with the aid of quantum-enhanced operations. This result not only serves as a concrete example of the power of quantum enhancement in combating noise but also holds experimental relevance, as the protocol is straightforward to implement in practice.

Abstract:Protecting quantum information from decoherence due to environmental noise is vital for fault-tolerant quantum computation. To this end, standard quantum error correction employs parallel projective measurements of individual particles, which makes the system extremely complicated. Here we propose measurement-free topological protection in two dimension without any selective addressing of individual particles. We make use of engineered dissipative dynamics and feedback operations to reduce the entropy generated by decoherence in such a way that quantum information is topologically protected. We calculate an error threshold, below which quantum information is protected, without assuming selective addressing, projective measurements, nor instantaneous classical processing. All physical operations are local and translationally invariant, and no parallel projective measurement is required, which implies high scalability. Furthermore, since the engineered dissipative dynamics we utilized has been well studied in quantum simulation, the proposed scheme can be a promising route progressing from quantum simulation to fault-tolerant quantum information processing.

Abstract:Measurement based quantum computation (MBQC) is an effective paradigm for universal quantum computation. In this scheme, the universal set of quantum gates are realized by only local measurements on the prior prepared cluster states. The inevitable decoherence is harmful to the realization of those quantum gates. Here, we investigate the performance of the quantum gates exposed to different type of noises. We find that some errors may not influence the success of the quantum gates, in contrast, some others may destroy their realization. We show that there is a controlling pattern that can protect quantum gates from certain types of noises and thus can improve the success probability of the gates implementation.
Entanglement Structure and Information Protection in Noisy Hybrid Quantum Circuits

Abstract:In the context of measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions, the influence of quantum noises, which are inherent in real physical systems, is of great importance and experimental relevance. In this Letter, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the effects of both temporally uncorrelated and correlated quantum noises on entanglement generation and information protection. This investigation reveals that entanglement within the system follows $q^{-1/3}$ scaling for both types of quantum noises, where $q$ represents the noise probability. The scaling arises from the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang fluctuation with effective length scale $L_{\text{eff}} \sim q^{-1}$. More importantly, the information protection timescales of the steady states are explored and shown to follow $q^{-1/2}$ and $q^{-2/3}$ scaling for temporally uncorrelated and correlated noises, respectively. The former scaling can be interpreted as a Hayden-Preskill protocol, while the latter is a direct consequence of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang fluctuations. We conduct extensive numerical simulations using stabilizer formalism to support the theoretical understanding. This Letter not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between quantum noises and measurement-induced phase transition but also provides a new perspective to understand the effects of Markovian and non-Markovian noises on quantum computation.

Abstract:Decoherence and imperfect control are crucial challenges for quantum technologies. Common protection strategies rely on noise temporal autocorrelation, which is not optimal if other correlations are present. We develop and demonstrate experimentally a strategy that uses the cross-correlation of two noise sources. Abstract:Protecting quantum information from errors is essential for large-scale quantum computation. Quantum error correction (QEC) encodes information in entangled states of many qubits, and performs parity measurements to identify errors without destroying the encoded information. However, traditional QEC cannot handle leakage from the qubit computational space. Leakage affects leading experimental platforms, based on trapped ions and superconducting circuits, which use effective qubits within many-level physical systems. We investigate how two-transmon entangled states evolve under repeated parity measurements, and demonstrate the use of hidden Markov models to detect leakage using only the record of parity measurement outcomes required for QEC. We show the stabilization of Bell states over up to 26 parity measurements by mitigating leakage using postselection, and correcting qubit errors using Pauli-frame transformations. Our leakage identification method is computationally efficient and thus compatible with real-time leakage tracking and correction in larger quantum processors.

Abstract:Quantum computers now show the promise of surpassing any possible classical machine. However, errors limit this ability and current machines do not have the ability to implement error correcting codes due to the limited number of qubits and limited control. Therefore, dynamical decoupling (DD) and encodings that limit noise with fewer qubits are more promising. For these reasons, we put forth a model of universal quantum computation that has many advantages over strategies that require a large overhead such as the standard quantum error correcting codes. First, we separate collective noise from individual noises on physical qubits and use a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) that uses just two qubits for its encoding to eliminate collective noise. Second, our bath model is very general as it uses a spin-boson type bath but without any Markovian assumption. Third, we are able to either use a steady global magnetic field or to devise a set of DD pulses that remove much of the remaining noise and commute with the logical operations on the encoded qubit. This allows removal of noise while implementing gate operations. Numerical support is given for this hybrid protection strategy which provides an efficient approach to deal with the decoherence problems in quantum computation and is experimentally viable for several current quantum computing systems. This is emphasized by a recent experiment on superconducting qubits which shows promise for increasing the number of gates that can be implemented reliably with some realistic parameter assumptions.

Detecting and Eliminating Quantum Noise of Quantum Measurements

Abstract:In this work, we propose a two-stage procedure to systematically address quantum noise inherent in quantum measurements. The idea behind it is intuitive: we first detect and then eliminate quantum noise so that the classical noise assumption is satisfied and measurement error mitigation works. In the first stage, inspired by coherence witness in the resource theory of quantum coherence, we design an efficient method to detect quantum noise. It works by fitting the difference between two measurement statistics to the Fourier series, where the statistics are obtained using maximally coherent states with relative phase and maximally mixed states as inputs. The fitting coefficients quantitatively benchmark quantum noise. In the second stage, we design various methods to eliminate quantum noise, inspired by the Pauli twirling technique. They work by executing randomly sampled Pauli gates before the measurement device and conditionally flipping the measurement outcomes in such a way that the effective measurement device contains only classical noise. We demonstrate the feasibility of the two-stage procedure numerically on Baidu Quantum Platform. Remarkably, the results show that quantum noise in measurement devices is significantly suppressed, and the quantum computation accuracy is substantially improved. We highlight that the two-stage procedure complements existing measurement error mitigation techniques, and they together form a standard toolbox for manipulating measurement errors in near-term quantum devices.

Abstract:We explore the protection of quantum gates from arbitrary single- and two-qubit noises with properly designed dynamical decoupling pulses. The proposed dynamical decoupling method is a concatenation of a sequence of pulses formed by $\sigma_x$, $\sigma_x\sigma_x$ with another sequence constructed by $\sigma_z$, $\sigma_z\sigma_z$. The concatenation of the two sequences results in desired pulses to fight agianst any single- and two-qubit errors. The success of our method relies on the ability to adjust system parameters or interaction terms, which can be achieved in different physical systems, including trapped ions and superconducting qubits. We finally explore the performance of our method numerically with the above-mentioned errors that are changing at any moment and show the preferred protection offered by the method. Therefore, our method is a timely step forward in preserving quantum gates at the level of physical qubits.

Abstract:Artificial atoms realized by superconducting circuits offer unique opportunities to store and process quantum information with high fidelity. Among them, implementations of circuits that harness intrinsic noise protection have been rapidly developed in recent years. These noise-protected devices constitute a new class of qubits in which the computational states are largely decoupled from local noise channels. The main challenges in engineering such systems are simultaneously guarding against both bit- and phase-flip errors, and also ensuring high-fidelity qubit control. Although partial noise protection is possible in superconducting circuits relying on a single quantum degree of freedom, the promise of complete protection can only be fulfilled by implementing multimode or hybrid circuits. This Perspective reviews the theoretical principles at the heart of these new qubits, describes recent experiments, and highlights the potential of robust encoding of quantum information in superconducting qubits.

Abstract:We propose a quantum state protection scheme via quantum feedforward control combined with environment-assisted measurement to protect arbitrary unknown initial states from the finite-temperature thermal noise(FTTN).The main strat-egy is to transfer the quantum system to a noise-robust state by weak measurement and feedforward control before the noise channel.Then we apply the environment-assisted measurement on the noise channel to select our desired damped states that are invertible to the initial state.After the noise channel,the reversal operations are applied to restore the initial state.We consider the protection of a single-qubit system,derive the analytical expressions of the success probability and the fidelity,and analyze the influence of key parameters on the performance of the proposed scheme.Unlike previous studies,there is no trade-off between the fidelity and the success probability in the proposed scheme;hence one could maximize them separately.Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can greatly improve the fidelity of the quantum state with a certain success probability.Moreover,the proposed scheme is successfully applied to improving the fidelity of controlled quantum teleportation through two independent FTTN channels from the perspective of protecting the shared entanglement.
Bounding experimental quantum error rates relative to fault-tolerant thresholds

Abstract:Rigorously establishing that the error in an experimental quantum operation is beneath the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation currently requires considering the worst-case error, which can be orders of magnitude smaller than the average gate infidelities routinely reported in experiments. We show that an improved bound on the worst-case error can be obtained by also considering the recently-introduced unitarity of the noise where the upper and lower bounds differ by a factor of $\approx 2.45$ for unital qubit channels. We prove that the contribution from the nonunital part of any noise map is at most on the order of the average gate infidelity and so is negligible relative to any coherent contribution. We also show that the "average" error rate when measurements are not restricted to an eigenbasis containing the state of the system exhibits the same scaling as the worst-case error, which, for coherent noise, is the square-root of the infidelity. We also obtain improved bounds for the diamond distance when the noise map is known (or approximately known).
