Abstract:This paper provides two results for the omega limit sets of a dynamical system. We show that omega limit sets can be estimated by using functions that satisfy different (and in many cases less demanding) assumptions than the usual assumptions in Lyapunov theorems and LaSalle's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study systems of time-invariant ordinary differential equations whose flows are non-expansive with respect to a norm, meaning that the distance between solutions may not increase. Since non-expansiveness (and contractivity) are norm-dependent notions, the topology of $\omega$-limit sets of solutions may depend on the norm. For example, and at least for systems defined by real-analytic vector fields, the only possible $\omega$-limit sets of systems that are non-expansive with respect to polyhedral norms (such as $\ell^p$ norms with $p =1$ or $p=\infty$) are equilibria. In contrast, for non-expansive systems with respect to Euclidean ($\ell^2$) norm, other limit sets may arise (such as multi-dimensional tori): for example linear harmonic oscillators are non-expansive (and even isometric) flows, yet have periodic orbits as $\omega$-limit sets. This paper shows that the Euclidean linear case is what can be expected in general: for flows that are contractive with respect to any strictly convex norm (such as $\ell^p$ for any $p\not=1,\infty$), and if there is at least one bounded solution, then the $\omega$-limit set of every trajectory is also an omega limit set of a linear time-invariant system.

Abstract:The well-known Poincaré-Bendixson theorem tells us that the structure of the omega-limit sets of planar autonomous differential equations can be described by fixed points, limit cycles, or finite number of fixed points together with homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits connecting them. However, this is very different for planar nonautonomous differential equations. In this paper, we study the omega-limit sets of three classes of planar nonautonomous differential equations, and their corresponding dynamical behavior. (i) The first type is linear, the omega-limit set is an annulus, the Lyapunov exponents are zero, there is no periodic orbit except for one fixed point, and the orbits are transitive in the omega-limit sets, implying the existence of infinitely many transitive components depending on initial conditions. (ii) The second type has butterfly-like omega-limit sets, two zero Lyapunov exponents, and neither periodic orbits nor sensitive dependence on initial conditions. (iii) The last type has a unique omega-limit set (a global attractor) independent on initial conditions, and has two negative Lyapunov exponents, where the omega-limit set is an annulus or a subset (homeomorphic to a disk) of an annulus for different parameter regions.

We obtain solutions for the systems (including the variation on the first system) and consider the asymptotic behavior of these solutions as $p\to\infty$. We prove that they converge, in the viscosity sense, to solutions of problems on $u$ and $v$.

Abstract:We construct an integer-valued Lyapunov function $\sigma(\cdot)$ for generalized negative cyclic feedback system; and prove that $\sigma(\cdot)$ on any $\omega$-limit set which generated by Poincaré mapping of bounded solution of such strongly $2$-cooperative system is constant. Therefore, the $\omega$-limit can be continuously embedded into a compact subset of a two-dimensional plane. Finally, a dissipative condition is given to ensure that all orbits of such system are bounded.

Abstract:In this paper, the global exponential attractive sets of a class of continuous-time dynamical systems defined by $\dot x = f\left( x \right),{\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} x \in {R^3},$ are studied. The elements of main diagonal of matrix $A$ are both negative numbers and zero, where matrix $A$ is the Jacobian matrix $\frac{{df}}{{dx}}$ of a continuous-time dynamical system defined by $\dot x = f\left( x \right),{\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} x \in {R^3},$ evaluated at the origin ${x_0} = \left( {0,0,0} \right).$ The former equations [1-6] that we are searching for a global bounded region have a common characteristic: The elements of main diagonal of matrix $A$ are all negative, where matrix $A$ is the Jacobian matrix $\frac{{df}}{{dx}}$ of a continuous-time dynamical system defined by $\dot x = f\left( x \right),{\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} {\kern 1pt} x \in {R^n},$ evaluated at the origin ${x_0} = {\left( {0,0, \cdots ,0} \right)_{1 \times n}}.$ For the reason that the elements of main diagonal of matrix $A$ are both negative numbers and zero for this class of dynamical systems , the method for constructing the Lyapunov functions that applied to the former dynamical systems does not work for this class of dynamical systems. We overcome this difficulty by adding a cross term $xy$ to the Lyapunov functions of this class of dynamical systems and get a perfect result through many integral inequalities and the generalized Lyapunov functions.

Abstract:Extreme value theory for chaotic dynamical systems is a rapidly expanding area of research. Given a system and a real function (observable) defined on its phase space, extreme value theory studies the limit probabilistic laws obeyed by large values attained by the observable along orbits of the system. Based on this theory, the so-called block maximum method is often used in applications for statistical prediction of large value occurrences. In this method, one performs inference for the parameters of the Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) distribution, using maxima over blocks of regularly sampled observations along an orbit of the system. The observables studied so far in the theory are expressed as functions of the distance with respect to a point, which is assumed to be a density point of the system's invariant measure. However, this is not the structure of the observables typically encountered in physical applications, such as windspeed or vorticity in atmospheric models. In this paper we consider extreme value limit laws for observables which are not functions of the distance from a density point of the dynamical system. In such cases, the limit laws are no longer determined by the functional form of the observable and the dimension of the invariant measure: they also depend on the specific geometry of the underlying attractor and of the observable's level sets. We present a collection of analytical and numerical results, starting with a toral hyperbolic automorphism as a simple template to illustrate the main ideas. We then formulate our main results for a uniformly hyperbolic system, the solenoid map. We also discuss non-uniformly hyperbolic examples of maps (Hénon and Lozi maps) and of flows (the Lorenz63 and Lorenz84 models). Our purpose is to outline the main ideas and to highlight several serious problems found in the numerical estimation of the limit laws.

Abstract:In this paper, the general Kolmogorov system {dxdt=ϕ(x)f(x,y),dydt=ρ(y)g(x,y) is studied. By using the theory of generalized rotated vector fields and the Poincare–Bendixson annular region theorem, we prove the sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of limit cycles in this system. And our results extend almost all the related existing studies on the Kolmogorov and predator–prey systems.

Abstract:This paper studies positive solutions of a class of delay differential equations of two delays that are originated from a mathematical model of hematopoietic dynamics. We give an optimal condition on initial conditions for t <= 0 such that the solutions are positive for t > 0. Long time behaviors of these positive solutions are also discussed through a dynamical system defined at a space of continuous functions. Characteristic description of the omega limit set of this dynamical system is obtained. This omega limit set provides informations for the long time behaviors of positive solutions of the delay differential equation.

Abstract:The $\omega$-limit set in a compact positively invariant region $R \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ has been identified for $n=1$, 2, and 3, with examples in each case. It has been shown that the $\omega$-limit set becomes more complex as $n$ increases from 1 to 3, and we expect this to also be true for $n>3$. Our example for $n=3$ is the Lorenz equations, for which we have shown that its $\omega$-limit set is a {\em twisted torus}

Abstract:To estimate the ultimate bound and positively invariant set for a dynamic system is an important but quite challenging task in general. In this paper, we attempt to investigate the ultimate bound and positively invariant set for the hyperchaotic Lorenz–Haken system using a technique combining the generalized Lyapunov function theory and optimization. For the Lorenz–Haken system, we derive a four-dimensional ellipsoidal ultimate bound and positively invariant set. Furthermore, the two-dimensional parabolic ultimate bound with respect to x–z is established. Finally, numerical results to estimate the ultimate bound are also presented for verification. The results obtained in this paper are important and useful in control, synchronization of hyperchaos and their applications.

Abstract:We consider dynamical systems for which the spatial extension plays an important role. For these systems, the notions of attractor, epsilon-entropy and topological entropy per unit time and volume have been introduced previously. In this paper we use the notion of Kolmogorov complexity to introduce, for extended dynamical systems, a notion of complexity per unit time and volume which plays the same role as the metric entropy for classical dynamical systems. We introduce this notion as an almost sure limit on orbits of the system. Moreover we prove a kind of variational principle for this complexity.

Abstract:We study general random dynamical systems of continuous maps on some compact metric space. Assuming a local contraction condition and uniqueness of the stationary measure, we establish probabilistic limit laws such as the central limit theorem, the strong law of large numbers, and the law of the iterated logarithm. Moreover, we study exponential synchronization and synchronization on average. In the particular case of iterated function systems on $\mathbb S^1$, we analyze synchronization rates and describe their large deviations. In the case of $C^{1+\beta}$-diffeomorphisms, these deviations on random orbits are obtained from the large deviations of the expected Lyapunov exponent.

Abstract:We obtain a Poisson Limit for return times to small sets for product systems. Only one factor is required to be hyperbolic, while the second factor is only required to satisfy polynomial deviation bounds for ergodic sums. In particular, the second factor can be elliptic or parabolic. As an application of our main result, several maps of the form Anosov map another map are shown to satisfy a Poisson Limit Theorem at typical points, some even at all points. The methods can be extended to certain types of skew products, including -maps of high rank.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ generalized Lyapunov functions to derive new estimations of the ultimate boundary for the trajectories of two types of Lorenz systems, one with parameters in finite intervals and the other in infinite intervals. The new estimations improve the results reported so far in the literature. In particular, for the singular cases: b -> 1(+) and a -> 0(+), we have obtained the estimations independent of a. Moreover, our method using elementary algebra greatly simplifies the proofs in the literature. This is an interesting attempt in obtaining information of the attractors which is difficult when merely based on differential equations. It indicates that Lyapunov function is still a powerful tool in the study of qualitative behavior of chaotic systems.

Abstract:Conditional symmetries were introduced by Levi and Winternitz in their 1989 seminal paper to deal with nonlinear PDEs. Here we discuss their application in the framework of ODEs, and more specifically Dynamical Systems; it turns out they are closely related to two established -- albeit maybe less widely known -- concepts, i.e. orbital symmetries and configurational invariants. The paper is devoted to studying the interplay of these notions, and their application in the study of Dynamical Systems, with special attention to invariant manifolds of these.

Abstract:Some limit theorems are derived for a class of controled Markov systems with small noises. The aim is to understand the effects of strategies of actions on the limiting behaviors of the systems, so that optimization for associated utilities can be considered. In deriving the limits, we apply a large deviation approach with a somewhat new technique of proof. An almost sure convergence theorem is then derived. To meet more realistic situations, the noises need not to be smooth or Lipschitz continuous even are allowed to be discontinuous in the states. Dependence of the limits on the strategies can be found, which involves a certain differential equation. Some illustrative examples are provided.

Abstract:In 2006, Janakiraman [10] showed that if $\Omega$ with mean value zero on $S^{n-1}$ satisfies the condition \[ \sup_{|\xi|=1}\int_{S^{n-1}}|\Omega(\theta)-\Omega(\theta+\delta\xi)|d\sigma(\theta)\leq Cn\delta\int_{S^{n-1}}|\Omega(\theta)|d\sigma(\theta),\quad 0 \lambda\})= \frac{1}{n}\|\Omega\|_{1}\|f\|_{1},\quad \text{for}\ f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\ \text{with}\ f\geq 0.\ (\ast\ast)\] In the present paper, we prove that if replacing the condition $(\ast)$ by more general condition, the $L^1$-Dini condition, then the limiting behavior $(\ast\ast)$ still holds for the singular integral $T_\Omega$. In particular, we give an example which satisfies the $L^1$-Dini condition, but does not satisfy $(\ast)$. Hence, we improve essentially the above result given in [10]. To prove our conclusion, we show that the $L^1$-Dini conditions defined respectively via the rotation and translation on $\mathbb{R}^n$ are equivalent (see Theorem 2.5 below), which has its own interest in the theory of singular integrals. Moreover, similar limiting behavior for the fractional integral operator $T_{\Omega,\alpha}$ with homogeneous kernel is also established in this paper.
