Abstract:In a conventional formalism of acoustics, acoustic pressure p and velocity field u are used for characterizing acoustic waves propagating inside elastic/acoustic materials. We shall treat some fundamental problems relevant to acoustic wave propagation alternatively by using canonical acoustics (a more concise and compact formalism of acoustic dynamics), in which an acoustic scalar potential and an acoustic vector potential (Phi, V), instead of the conventional acoustic field quantities such as acoustic pressure and velocity field (p, u) for characterizing acoustic waves, have been defined as the fundamental variables. The canonical formalism of the acoustic energy-momentum tensor is derived in terms of the acoustic potentials. Both the acoustic Hamiltonian density and the acoustic Lagrangian density have been defined, and based on this formulation, the acoustic wave quantization in a fluid is also developed. Such a formalism of acoustic potentials is employed to the problem of negative-mass-density assisted surface acoustic wave that is a highly localized surface bound state (an eigenstate of the acoustic wave equations). Since such a surface acoustic wave can be strongly confined to an interface between an acoustic metamaterial (e.g., fluid-solid composite structures with a negative dynamical mass density) and an ordinary material (with a positive mass density), it will give rise to an effect of acoustic field enhancement on the acoustic interface, and would have potential applications in acoustic device design for acoustic wave control.

Abstract:The article explores the acoustic equations in inhomogeneous media and the linearized shallow water equations. Two methods for integrating these equations are proposed. The first method is based on the of the Laplace cascade method, while the second involves reducing two-dimensional and three-dimensional models to the wave equation. In the case of plane waves, solutions to some equations depending on two arbitrary functions are obtained. In the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, equations that can be reduced to equations with constant coefficients are found.

On the stability of inhomogeneous fluids under acoustic fields

Abstract:In this work, we present the stability theory for inhomogeneous fluids subjected to standing acoustic fields. Starting from the first principles, the stability criterion is established for two fluids of different acoustic impedance separated by a plane interface. Through stability theory and numerical simulations we show that, in the presence of interfacial tension, the relocation of high-impedance fluid from anti-node to node occurs when the acoustic force overcomes interfacial tension force, which is in agreement with recent microchannel experiments. Furthermore, we establish an acoustic Bond number that characterizes stable (Bo_a < 1) and relocation (Bo_a > 1) regimes. Remarkably, it is found that the critical acoustic energy density required for relocation can be significantly reduced by increasing the channel height which could help design acoustofluidic microchannel devices that handle immiscible fluids.

Abstract:In this paper, a new Stroh formalism for gradient electro-mechanics is derived for the first time, which is both mathematically concise and numerically powerful, applicable to generally coupled anisotropic material systems. Based on this new formalism, the complicated Lamb wave in flexoelectric and piezoelectric plates is investigated. The dispersion equation is obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem along with the unconditionally stable dual-variable and position method. From the obtained dispersion equation, the dispersion curves and mode shapes of the Lamb wave are calculated by the 1D form of the multidimensional moduli ratio convergence method. Two important and interesting features are observed from our analysis: One is the difference in the mode shape symmetry between the piezoelectric and flexoelectric cases, and the other is the size-dependent property of the flexoelectric effect as observed by nondimensionalization. These features are further illustrated by comparing the dispersion curves and wave-mode shapes among the three different material models (purely piezoelectric, purely flexoelectric, and flexoelectric and piezoelectric coupled). The newly derived Stroh formalism offers a robust, concise, and unified approach for dealing with strain gradient electro-mechanic materials with crystal systems of general anisotropy. The present work also explains the physical mechanism of symmetry breaking observed, as induced by flexoelectric coupling in piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:Stroh's sextic formalism represents the equilibrium equations of anisotropic elasticity in a particularly attractive form, that is most suitable for studying interface-dominated multilayered solids, composite materials and time-harmonic problems. Taking advantage of the fact that the Stroh formalism really amounts to the canonical form of the equations in the Hamiltonian sense, the case of Biot's reversible (i.e. no fluid dissipation) poroelasticity is here addressed, in the absence of a fluid pressure gradient. This framework is the same as thermoelasticity of perfect conductors. Two Hamiltonian formulations are developed: the first describes both the solid and the fluid phases and it exhibits, besides energy conservation, momentum conservation, as a result of pressure uniformity (perfectly drained conditions). The second is restricted to the solid skeleton and perfectly parallels anisotropic elasticity, where the Stroh matrices refer to the effective stress tensor. The case of weak fluid-solid coupling is also considered and it produces a perturbation from anisotropic elasticity with the same structure as incompressibility, although in an "opposing" manner. This comparison suggests that the incompressibility limit introduced by Biot should be revised. The energy conservation integral and the edge impedance matrix are also illustrated.

Abstract:The steady-state interaction of acoustic-gravity waves in an ocean of uniform depth is researched theoretically by means of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an analytic approximation method for nonlinear problems. Considering compressibility, a hydroacoustic wave can be produced by the interaction of two progressive gravity waves with the same wavelength travelling in opposite directions, which contains an infinite number of small denominators in the framework of the classical analytic approximation methods, like perturbation methods. Using the HAM, the infinite number of small denominators are avoided once and for all by means of choosing a proper auxiliary linear operator. Besides, by choosing a proper 'convergence-control parameter', convergent series solutions of the steady-state acoustic-gravity waves are obtained in cases of both non-resonance and exact resonance. It is found, for the first time, that the steady-state resonant acoustic-gravity waves widely exist. In addition, the two primary wave components and the resonant hydroacoustic wave component might occupy most of wave energy. It is found that the dynamic pressure on the sea bottom caused by the resonant hydroacoustic wave component is much larger than that in the case of non-resonance, which might even trigger microseisms of the ocean floor. All of these might deepen our understanding and enrich our knowledge of acoustic-gravity waves.

Abstract:Recently, the phenomena of streaming suppression and relocation of inhomogeneous miscible fluids under acoustic fields were explained using the hypothesis on mean Eulerian pressure. In this letter, we show that this hypothesis is unsound and any assumption on mean Eulerian pressure is needless. We present a theory of non-linear acoustics for inhomogeneous fluids from the first principles, which explains streaming suppression and acoustic relocation in both miscible and immiscible inhomogeneous fluids inside a microchannel. This theory predicts the relocation of higher impedance fluids to pressure nodes of the standing wave, which agrees with the recent experiments.

Abstract:This study extends efforts to incorporate spatial dispersion into Biot-Allard's theory, with a focus on poroelastic media with intricate microgeometries where spatial dispersion effects play a significant role. While preserving Biot's small-scale quasi-"en-bloc" frame motion to keep the structure of Biot-Allard's theory intact, the paper challenges Biot's quasi-incompressibility of fluid motion at that scale by introducing structurations in the form of Helmholtz's resonators. Consequently, Biot-Allard's theory undergoes a significant augmentation, marked by the arising of non-local dynamic tortuosity and compliability, which are associated with potentially resonant fluid behavior. Building on an acoustic-electromagnetic analogy, the study defines these non-local responses and suggests simplifying them into pseudo-local ones, now potentially resonant and reminiscent of Veselago-type phenomena. In the high-frequency limit of small boundary layers and as an extension of the classical Johnson-Allard's findings, simple field-averaged formulas are demonstrated for pseudo-local ideal-fluid tortuosity and compliability (complex frequency-dependent) and viscous and thermal characteristic lengths (positive frequency-dependent). These formulations are grounded in the Umov-Heaviside-Poynting thermodynamic macroscopic acoustic stress concept, suggested by the analogy. Future computational investigations, spanning various fundamental microgeometries, are planned to assess assumed pseudo-local simplifications, encompass low- and intermediate frequencies, and unveil potential behavioral outcomes resulting from the incorporation of spatial dispersion effects.

Abstract:The paper studies the interaction of a longitudinal wave with transverse waves in general isotropic and unconstrained hyperelastic materials, including the possibility of dissipation. The dissipative term chosen is similar to the classical stress tensor describing a Stokesian fluid and is commonly used in nonlinear acoustics. The aim of this research is to derive the corresponding general equations of motion, valid for any possible form of the strain energy function and to investigate the possibility of obtaining some general and exact solutions to these equations by reducing them to a set of ordinary differential equations. Then the reductions can lead to some exact closed-form solutions for special classes of materials (here the examples of the Hadamard, Blatz-Ko, and power-law strain energy densities are considered, as well as fourth-order elasticity). The solutions derived are in a time/space separable form and may be interpreted as generalized oscillatory shearing motions and generalized sinusoidal standing waves. By means of standard methods of dynamical systems theory, some peculiar properties of waves propagating in compressible materials are uncovered, such as for example, the emergence of destabilizing effects. These latter features exist for highly nonlinear strain energy functions such as the relatively simple power-law strain energy, but they cannot exist in the framework of fourth-order elasticity.

Abstract:The acoustic wave-propagation without mean flow and heat flux can be described in terms of velocity and pressure by the compressible nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations, where boundary layers appear at walls due to the viscosity and a frequency interaction appears, $\textit{i.e.}$ sound at higher harmonics of the excited frequency $\omega$ is generated due to nonlinear advection. We use the multiharmonic analysis to derive asymptotic expansions for small sound amplitudes and small viscosities both of order $\varepsilon^2$ in which velocity and pressure fields are separated into far field and correcting near field close to walls and into contributions to the multiples of $\omega$. Based on the asymptotic expansion we present approximate models for either the pressure or the velocity for order $0$, $1$ and $2$, in which impedance boundary conditions include the effect of viscous boundary layers and contributions at frequencies $0$ and $2\cdot\omega$ depend nonlinearly on the approximation at frequency $\omega$. In difference to the Navier-Stokes equations in time domain, which has to be resolved numerically with meshes adaptively refined towards the wall boundaries and explicit schemes require the use of very small time steps, the approximative models can be solved in frequency domain on macroscopic meshes. We studied the accuracy of the approximated models of different orders in numerical experiments comparing with reference solutions in time-domain.

Abstract:The unidirectional wave motions of many physical systems may all be represented by a set of state equations describing the dynamic state of certain physical variables in acoustics, mechanics, optics, and geophysics, varying in time and in one-spatial coordinate. Through the application of Fourier transforms in time variable, the state equations are reduced to a linear system of differential equations with variable coefficients, which may be analyzed by the traditional method of transfer matrix (the propagator of state variables) or the recently developed method of reverberation-ray matrix. The mathematical formulations of both matrices and applications to seemingly two unrelated physical systems, the propagation of axial and flexural waves in a multi-branched framed structure, and that of seismic waves in a layered medium, are reviewed in this article. By detailed comparisons with the method of transfer matrix and others, we conclude that the reverberation-ray analysis is a viable alternative to the solutions of initial value and two-point boundary value problems of unidirectional wave motions.

Abstract:Summary The generalized standard-linear-solid model, also called the Zener model, is widely used in viscoacoustic/viscoelastic wavefield forward and inverse modeling, because the wave equations in this model can be written in differential equation form, which can be solved efficiently by time-domain numerical methods such as finite difference method, spectral element method, etc. For this model, however, two different expressions for the relaxation function (or complex modulus) appear in the literature somewhat confusingly. In addition to this confusion, the time- and frequency-domain versions of the wave equations for the generalized standard-linear-solid model are scattered throughout the literature. Here, we revisit the generalized standard-linear-solid model and seek to overcome the confusion concerning the expression for the relaxation function (or modulus). We present a unified approach to derive the viscoacoustic wave equations. We start with the time- and frequency-domain formulations separately to derive two sets of viscoacoustic wave equations. All these viscoacoustic wave equations are expressed in a simple and compact form. The two sets of viscoacoustic wave equations are equivalent to each other. The proposed method to derive the appropriate viscoacoustic wave equations can be extended to derive wave equations for other dissipative media.

Abstract:Wave propagation in a stratified fluid / porous medium is studied here using analytical and numerical methods. The semi-analytical method is based on an exact stiffness matrix method coupled with a matrix conditioning procedure, preventing the occurrence of poorly conditioned numerical systems. Special attention is paid to calculating the Fourier integrals. The numerical method is based on a high order finite-difference time-domain scheme. Mesh refinement is applied near the interfaces to discretize the slow compressional diffusive wave predicted by Biot's theory. Lastly, an immersed interface method is used to discretize the boundary conditions. The numerical benchmarks are based on realistic soil parameters and on various degrees of hydraulic contact at the fluid / porous boundary. The time evolution of the acoustic pressure and the porous velocity is plotted in the case of one and four interfaces. The excellent level of agreement found to exist between the two approaches confirms the validity of both methods, which cross-checks them and provides useful tools for future researches.

Abstract:Stroh-type formalisms for anisotropic thin plates in literature are reviewed and discussed, and two kinds of hybrid Stroh-type formalisms are compared. It is seen that the two Stroh-type formalisms are essentially equivalent. With simple transfer relations, they can be expressed each other. In addition, with properly defined notation systems, the two Stroh-type formalisms can also be written in unified forms, which will be convenient in applications.

Abstract:In the context of providing a mathematical framework for the propagation of ultrasound waves in a random multiscale medium, we consider the scattering of classical waves (modeled by a divergence form scalar Helmholtz equation) by a bounded object with a random composite micro-structure embedded in an unbounded homogeneous background medium. Using quantitative stochastic homogenization techniques, we provide asymptotic expansions of the scattered field in the background medium with respect to a scaling parameter describing the spatial random oscillations of the micro-structure. Introducing a boundary layer corrector to compensate the breakdown of stationarity assumptions at the boundary of the scattering medium, we prove quantitative $L^2$- and $H^1$- error estimates for the asymptotic first-order expansion. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.

Abstract:By exploiting the mathematical analogy between the propagation of sound in a nonhomogeneous potential flow and the propagation of a scalar field in curved space-time, various wave "energy" and wave "momentum" conservation laws are established in a systematic manner. In particular, the acoustic energy conservation law due to Blokhintsev appears as the result of the conservation of a mixed covariant and contravariant energy-momentum tensor, while the exchange of relative energy between the wave and mean flow, first noted by Longuet-Higgins and Stewart in the context of ocean waves, appears as the covariant conservation of the doubly contravariant form of the same energy-momentum tensor.

Abstract:In this paper we continue the analysis of the dispersive properties of the 2D and 3D massless Dirac-Coulomb equations that has been started in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1503.00945" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1503.00945">arXiv:1503.00945</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2101.07185" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2101.07185">arXiv:2101.07185</a>. We prove a priori estimates of the solution of the mentioned systems, in particular Strichartz estimates with an additional angular regularity, exploiting the tools developed in the previous works. As an application, we show local well-posedness results for a Dirac-Coulomb equation perturbed with Hartree-type nonlinearities.

Abstract:This paper concerns the derivation of radiative transfer equations for acoustic waves propagating in a randomly fluctuating slab (between two parallel planes) in the weak-scattering regime, and the study of boundary effects through an asymptotic analysis of the Wigner transform of the wave solution. These radiative transfer equations allow to model the transport of wave energy density, taking into account the scattering by random heterogeneities. The approach builds on the method of images, where the slab is extended to a full-space, with a periodic map of mechanical properties and a series of sources located along a periodic pattern. Two types of boundary effects, both on the (small) scale of the wavelength, are observed: one at the boundaries of the slab, and one inside the domain. The former impact the entire energy density (coherent as well as incoherent) and is also observed in half-spaces. The latter, more specific to slabs, corresponds to the constructive interference of waves that have reflected at least twice on the boundaries of the slab and only impacts the coherent part of the energy density.

Abstract:The boundary element method is an efficient algorithm for simulating acoustic propagation through homogeneous objects embedded in free space. The conditioning of the system matrix strongly depends on physical parameters such as density, wavespeed and frequency. In particular, high contrast in density and wavespeed across a material interface leads to an ill-conditioned discretisation matrix. Therefore, the convergence of Krylov methods to solve the linear system is slow. Here, specialised boundary integral formulations are designed for the case of acoustic scattering at high-contrast media. The eigenvalues of the resulting system matrix accumulate at two points in the complex plane that depend on the density ratio and stay away from zero. The spectral analysis of the Calderón preconditioned PMCHWT formulation yields a single accumulation point. Benchmark simulations demonstrate the computational efficiency of the high-contrast Neumann formulation for scattering at high-contrast media.

Abstract:This work is devoted to investigating a compressible fluid system with low stratification, which is driven by fast acoustic waves and internal waves. The approximation using a soundproof model is justified. More precisely, the soundproof model captures the dynamics of both the non-oscillating mean flows and the oscillating internal waves, while filters out the fast acoustic waves, of the compressible system with or without initial acoustic waves. Moreover, the fast-slow oscillation structure is investigated.
