Abstract:We are motivated by the question that for which class of right-angled Artin groups (RAAG's), the quasi-isometry classification coincides with commensurability classification. This is previously known for RAAG's with finite outer automorphism groups. In this paper, we identify two classes of RAAG's, where their outer automorphism groups are allowed to contain adjacent transvections and partial conjugations, hence infinite. If $G$ belongs to one of these classes, then any other RAAG $G'$ is quasi-isometric to $G$ if and only if $G'$ is commensurable to $G$. We also show that in this case, there exists an algorithm to determine whether two RAAG's are quasi-isometric by looking at their defining graphs. Compared to the finite out case, as well as the previous quasi-isometry rigidity results for symmetric spaces, thick Euclidean buildings and mapping class groups, the main issue we need to deal with here is the reconstruction map may not have nice properties as before, or may not even exist. We introduce a deformation argument, as well as techniques from cubulation to deal with this issue.

Abstract:We prove that every right-angled Artin group occurs as a finite-index subgroup of the outer automorphism group of another right-angled Artin group. We furthermore show that the latter group can be chosen in such a way that the quotient is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N$ for some $N$. For these, we give explicit constructions using the group of pure symmetric outer automorphisms. Moreover, we need two conditions by Day-Wade and Wade-Brück about when this group is a right-angled Artin group and when it has finite index.

Abstract:We study the acylindrical hyperbolicity of the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group $A_\Gamma$. When the defining graph $\Gamma$ has no SIL-pair (separating intersection of links), we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ to be acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, if $\Gamma$ is a random connected graph satisfying a certain probabilistic condition, then $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is not acylindrically hyperbolic with high probability. When $\Gamma$ has a maximal SIL-pair system, we derive a classification theorem for partial conjugations. Such a classification theorem allows us to show that the acylindrical hyperbolicity of $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is closely related to the existence of a specific type of partial conjugations.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.
Rigidity and classification results for large-type Artin groups

Abstract:We compute the automorphism group of the intersection graph of many large-type Artin groups. This graph is an analogue of the curve graph of mapping class groups but in the context of Artin groups. As an application, we deduce a number of rigidity and classification results for these groups, including computation of outer automorphism groups, commensurability classification, quasi-isometric rigidity, measure equivalence rigidity, orbit equivalence rigidity, rigidity of lattice embedding, and rigidity of cross-product von Neumann algebra.

Graph products and measure equivalence: classification, rigidity, and quantitative aspects

Abstract:We study graph products of groups from the viewpoint of measured group theory. We first establish a full measure equivalence classification of graph products of countably infinite groups over finite simple graphs with no transvection and no partial conjugation. This finds applications to their classification up to commensurability, and up to isomorphism, and to the study of their automorphism groups. We also derive structural properties of von Neumann algebras associated to probability measure-preserving actions of graph products. Variations of the measure equivalence classification statement are given with fewer assumptions on the defining graphs. We also provide a quantified version of our measure equivalence classification theorem, that keeps track of the integrability of associated cocycles. As an application, we solve an inverse problem in quantitative orbit equivalence for a large family of right-angled Artin groups. We then establish several rigidity theorems. First, in the spirit of work of Monod-Shalom, we achieve rigidity in orbit equivalence for probability measure-preserving actions of graph products, upon imposing extra ergodicity assumptions. Second, we establish a sufficient condition on the defining graph and on the vertex groups ensuring that a graph product G is rigid in measure equivalence among torsion-free groups (in the sense that every torsion-free countable group H which is measure equivalent to G, is in fact isomorphic to G). Using variations over the Higman groups as the vertex groups, we construct the first example of a group which is rigid in measure equivalence, but not in quasi-isometry, among torsion-free groups.

Abstract:We construct the first known examples of infinite subgroups of the outer automorphism group of Out(A_Gamma), for certain right-angled Artin groups A_Gamma. This is achieved by introducing a new class of graphs, called focused graphs, whose properties allow us to exhibit (infinite) projective linear groups as subgroups of Out(Out(A_Gamma)). This demonstrates a marked departure from the known behavior of Out(Out(A_Gamma)) when A_Gamma is free or free abelian, as in these cases Out(Out(A_Gamma)) has order at most 4. We also disprove a previous conjecture of the second author, producing new examples of finite order members of certain Out(Aut(A_Gamma)).

Abstract:We construct quasi-isometric embeddings from right-angled Artin groups into the outer automorphism group of a free group. These homomorphisms are in analogy with those constructed in \cite{CLM}, where the target group is the mapping class group of a surface. Toward this goal, we develop tools in the free group setting that mirror those for surface groups as well as discuss various analogs of subsurface projection; these may be of independent interest.

Endomorphisms of Artin groups of type D

Abstract:In this paper we determine a classification of the endomorphisms of the Artin group $A [D_n]$ of type $D_n$ for $n\ge 6$. In particular we determine its automorphism group and its outer automorphism group. We also determine a classification of the homomorphisms from $A[D_n]$ to the Artin group $A [A_{n-1}]$ of type $A_{n-1}$ and a classification of the homomorphisms from $A[A_{n-1}]$ to $A[D_n]$ for $n\ge 6$. We show that any endomorphism of the quotient $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$ lifts to an endomorphism of $A [D_n]$ for $n \ge 4$. We deduce a classification of the endomorphisms of $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$, we determine the automorphism and outer automorphism groups of $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$, and we show that $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$ is co-Hopfian, for $n \ge 6$. The results are algebraic in nature but the proofs are based on topological arguments (curves on surfaces and mapping class groups).

Homomorphisms between large-type Artin groups

Abstract:In this article, we study homomorphisms between Artin groups that belong to two generic classes. For XL-type Artin groups over complete graphs, we describe all possible homomorphisms with sufficiently large image, and prove in particular that such groups are both hopfian and co-hopfian. For Artin groups with all labels at least $6$, we completely characterise in terms of the presentation graph when these groups have a finite outer automorphism group, as well as when they are co-hopfian. Moreover, when the presentation graph has no cut-vertex, we provide a generating set for their automorphism group.

Abstract:Given a regular covering map $\varphi:\Lambda \to \Gamma$ of graphs, we investigate the subgroup $\operatorname{LAut}(\varphi)$ of the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(A_\Gamma)$ of the right-angled Artin group $A_\Gamma$. This subgroup comprises all automorphisms that can be lifted to automorphisms of $A_\Lambda$. We first show that $\operatorname{LAut}(\varphi)$ is generated by a finite subset of Laurence's elementary automorphisms. For the subgroup $\operatorname{FAut}(\varphi)$ of $\operatorname{Aut}(A_\Lambda)$, which consists of lifts of automorphisms in $\operatorname{LAut}(\varphi)$, there exists a natural homomorphism $\operatorname{FAut}(\varphi)\to\operatorname{LAut}(\varphi)$ induced by $\varphi$. We then show that the kernel of this homomorphism is virtually a subgroup of the Torelli subgroup $\operatorname{IA}(A_\Lambda)$ and deduce a short exact sequence reminiscent of results from the Birman--Hilden theory for surfaces.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a theorem of Giordano, Putnam and Skau characterizing orbit equivalence of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space in terms of their sets of invariant Borel probability measures. The proof is based on a strengtehning of a theorem of Krieger concerning minimal actions of certain locally finite groups of homeomorphisms, and we also give a new proof of the Giordano--Putnam--Skau characterization of orbit equivalence for these actions.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a finite graph and let $A(\Gamma)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis $\mathcal B$ of $H^1(A(\Gamma),\mathbb F)$ over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph $\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$ from the cup product, called the \emph{cohomology basis graph}. We show that $\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$ always contains $\Gamma$ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph $\Gamma$ from the cohomology of $A(\Gamma)$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of $A(\Gamma)$, and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behavior of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors, and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.

Abstract:For any right-angled Artin group $A_{\Gamma}$, Charney--Stambaugh--Vogtmann showed that the subgroup $U^0(A_{\Gamma}) \leq\text{Out}(A_{\Gamma})$ generated by Whitehead automorphisms and inversions acts properly and cocompactly on a contractible space $K_{\Gamma}$. In the present paper we show that any finite subgroup of $U^0(A_{\Gamma})$ fixes a point of $K_{\Gamma}$. This generalizes the fact that any finite subgroup of $\text{Out}(F_n)$ fixes a point of Outer Space, and implies that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups in $U^0(A_{\Gamma})$.

The Artin monoid Cayley graph

Abstract:In this paper we investigate properties of the Artin monoid Cayley graph. This is the Cayley graph of an Artin group $A_\Gamma$ with respect to the (infinite) generating set given by the associated Artin monoid $A^+_\Gamma$. In a previous paper, the first three authors introduced a monoid Deligne complex and showed that this complex is contractible for all Artin groups. In this paper, we show that the Artin monoid Cayley graph is quasi-isometric to a modification of the Deligne complex for $A_\Gamma$ obtained by coning off translates of the monoid Deligne complex. We then address the question of when the monoid Cayley graph has infinite diameter. We conjecture that this holds for all Artin groups of infinite type. We give a set of criteria that imply infinite diameter, and using existing solutions to the word problem for large-type Artin groups and 3-free Artin groups, we prove that the conjecture holds for any Artin group containing a 3-generator subgroup of one of these two types.

Lattice envelopes of right-angled Artin groups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a finite simplicial graph with at least two vertices, and let $G(\Gamma)$ be the associated right-angled Artin group. We describe a locally compact group $\mathcal U$ containing $G(\Gamma)$ as a cocompact lattice. If $\Gamma$ is not a join (i.e. the complement graph is connected), the group $\mathcal U$ is non-discrete, almost simple, but not virtually simple: it has a smallest normal subgroup $\mathcal U^+$ which is an open simple subgroup, and the quotient $\mathcal U/\mathcal U^+$ is isomorphic to the right-angled Coxeter group $W(\Gamma)$. Under suitable assumptions on $\Gamma$, we rely on work by Bader-Furman-Sauer and Huang-Kleiner to show that $\mathcal U \rtimes \mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)$ is the universal lattice envelope of $G(\Gamma)$: for every lattice envelope $H$ of $G(\Gamma)$, there is a continuous proper homomorphism $H \to \mathcal U \rtimes \mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)$. In particular, no lattice envelope of $G(\Gamma)$ is virtually simple. We also show that no locally compact group quasi-isometric to $G(\Gamma)$ is virtually simple. This contrasts with the case of free groups. The group $\mathcal U$ is a universal automorphism group of the Davis building of $G(\Gamma)$, with prescribed local actions. As an application, we describe the algebraic structure of the full automorphism group of the Cayley graph of $G(\Gamma)$ with respect to its standard generating set.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of normal subgroups of mapping class groups that are isomorphic to non-free right-angled Artin groups. Our construction also gives normal, non-free right-angled Artin subgroups of other groups, such as braid groups and pure braid groups, as well as many subgroups of the mapping class group, such as the Torelli subgroup. Our work recovers and generalizes the seminal result of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which gives free, purely pseudo-Anosov normal subgroups of mapping class groups. We give two applications of our methods: (1) we produce an explicit proper normal subgroup of the mapping class group that is not contained in any level $m$ congruence subgroup, and (2) we produce an explicit example of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with the property that all of its even powers have free normal closure and its odd powers normally generate the entire mapping class group. The technical theorem at the heart of our work is a new version of the windmill apparatus of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which is tailored to the setting of group actions on the projection complexes of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara.

Abstract:In a recent article, Cumplido and Paris studied the question of commensurability between Artin groups of spherical type. Their analysis left six cases undecided, for the following pairs of Artin groups: $(F_4,D_4)$, $(H_4,D_4)$, $(F_4,H_4)$, $(E_6,D_6)$, $(E_7,D_7)$, and $(E_8,D_8)$. In this note we resolve the first two of these cases, namely, we show that the Artin groups of types $F_4$ and $H_4$ are not commensurable with that of type $D_4$. As a key step, we realize the abstract commensurator of the Artin group of type $D_4$ as the extended mapping class group of the torus with three punctures. We also find the automorphism group of the Artin group of type $D_4$ and obtain a description of torsion elements, their orders and conjugacy classes in all irreducible Artin groups of spherical type modulo their centers.

Abstract:We establish property $R_\infty$ for Artin groups of spherical type $D_n$, $n\ge6$, their central quotients, and also for large hyperbolic-type free-of-infinity Artin groups and some other classes of large-type Artin groups. The key ingredients are recent descriptions of the automorphism groups for these Artin groups and their action on suitable Gromov-hyperbolic spaces.
