Abstract:We reformulate the embedding problem in Galois theory as a question within the frameworks of topological and semi-topological Galois theory. We prove that these problems are solvable when the fundamental group of the base space is a free group of countable rank.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:We enhance the analogy between field extensions and covering spaces by introducing the concept of splitting covering which correspondences to the splitting field in Galois theory. We define semi-topological Galois groups for Weierstrass polynomials and prove the existence of a Galois correspondence. This new tool enables us to study the inverse Galois problem from a new viewpoint.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the questions of which topological semigroups embed topologically into the full transformation monoid â„• â„• or the symmetric inverse monoid I â„• with their respective canonical Polish semigroup topologies. We characterise those topological semigroups that embed topologically into â„• â„• and belong to any of the following classes: commutative semigroups, compact semigroups, groups, and certain Clifford semigroups. We prove analogous characterisations for topological inverse semigroups and I â„• . We construct several examples of countable Polish topological semigroups that do not embed into â„• â„• , which answer, in the negative, a recent open problem of Elliott et al. Additionally, we obtain two sufficient conditions for a topological Clifford semigroup to be metrizable, and prove that inversion is automatically continuous in every Clifford subsemigroup of â„• â„• . The former complements recent works of Banakh et al.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, it is shown that there exists a connected topological group which is not homeomorphic to any $\omega $-narrow topological group, and also that there exists a zero-dimensional topological group $G$ with neutral element $e$ such that the subspace $X = G\setminus \{e\}$ is not homeomorphic to any topological group. These two results give negative answers to two open problems in Arhangel’skii and Tkachenko [Topological Groups and Related Structures (Atlantis Press, Amsterdam, 2008)]. We show that if a compact topological group is a $K$-space, then it is metrisable. This result gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Malykhin and Tironi [‘Weakly Fréchet–Urysohn and Pytkeev spaces’, Topology Appl. 104 (2000), 181–190] in the category of topological groups. We also prove that a regular $K$-space $X$ is a weakly Fréchet–Urysohn space if and only if $X$has countable tightness.

Abstract:We show that the fundamental groupoid~$\Pi_1(X)$ of a locally path connected semilocally simply connected space~$X$ can be equipped with a \emph{natural} topology so that it becomes a topological groupoid; we also justify the necessity and minimality of these two hypotheses on~$X$ in order to topologise the fundamental groupoid. We find that contrary to a belief -- especially among the Operator Algebraists -- the fundamental groupoid is not {\etale}. Further, we prove that the fundamental groupoid of a topological group, in particular a Lie group, is a \emph{transformation groupoid}; again, this result disproves a standard belief that the fundamental groupoids are \emph{far} away from being transformation groupoids. We also discuss the point-set topology on the fundamental groupoid with the intention of making it a locally compact groupoid.

Hindman's finite sums theorem and its application to topologizations of algebras

Abstract:The first part of the paper is a brief overview of Hindman's finite sums theorem, its prehistory and a few of its further generalizations, and a modern technique used in proving these and similar results, which is based on idempotent ultrafilters in ultrafilter extensions of semigroups. The second, main part of the paper is devoted to the topologizability problem of a wide class of algebraic structures called polyrings; this class includes Abelian groups, rings, modules, algebras over a ring, differential rings, and others. We show that the Zariski topology of such an algebra is always non-discrete. Actually, a much stronger fact holds: if $K$ is an infinite polyring, $n$ a natural number, and a map $F$ of $K^n$ into $K$ is defined by a term in $n$ variables, then $F$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of the space $K^{n+1}$ with its Zariski topology. In particular, $K^n$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of $K^{n+1}$. The proof essentially uses a multidimensional version of Hindman's finite sums theorem established by Bergelson and Hindman. The third part of the paper lists several problems concerning topologization of various algebraic structures, their Zariski topologies, and related questions.

Topological Properties of Almost Abelian Groups

Abstract:An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. We show that all discrete subgroups of complex simply connected almost Abelian groups are finitely generated. The topology of connected almost Abelian Lie groups is studied by expressing each connected almost Abelian Lie group as a quotient of its universal covering group by a discrete normal subgroup. We then prove that no complex connected almost Abelian group is compact, and give conditions for the compactness of connected subgroups of such groups. Towards studying the homotopy type of complex connected almost Abelian groups, we investigate the maximal compact subgroups of such groups.

Abstract:The proalgebraic fundamental group of a connected topological space $X$, recently introduced by the first author, is an affine group scheme whose representations classify local systems of finite-dimensional vector spaces on $X$. In this article, we further develop the theory of the proalgebraic fundamental group, in particular, we establish homotopy invariance and a Seifert-van Kampen theorem. To facilitate the latter, we study amalgamated free product of affine group schemes. We also compute the proalgebraic fundamental group of the arithmetically relevant Kucharcyzk-Scholze spaces and compare it to the motivic Galois group.

Abstract:We study generic properties of topological groups in the sense of Baire category. First, we investigate countably infinite groups. We extend a classical result of B. H. Neumann, H. Simmons and A. Macintyre on algebraically closed groups and the word problem. Recently, I. Goldbring, S. Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, and Y. Lodha proved that every isomorphism class is meager among countably infinite groups. In contrast, it follows from the work of W. Hodges on model-theoretic forcing that there exists a comeager isomorphism class among countably infinite abelian groups. We present a new elementary proof of this result. Then, we turn to compact metrizable abelian groups. We use Pontryagin duality to show that there is a comeager isomorphism class among compact metrizable abelian groups. We discuss its connections to the countably infinite case. Finally, we study compact metrizable groups. We prove that the generic compact metrizable group is neither connected nor totally disconnected; also it is neither torsion-free nor a torsion group.

Topological complexity of enumerative problems and classifying spaces of $PU_n$

Abstract:We study the topological complexity, in the sense of Smale, of three enumerative problems in algebraic geometry: finding the 27 lines on cubic surfaces, the 28 bitangents and the 24 inflection points on quartic curves. In particular, we prove lower bounds for the topological complexity of any algorithm that finds solutions to the three problems and for the Schwarz genera of their associated covers. The key is to understand cohomology classes of the classifying spaces of projective unitary groups $PU_n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every topological group is a strong small loop transfer space at the identity element. This implies that the quasitopological fundamental group of a connected locally path connected topological group is a topological group. Also, we show that every covering space of a connected locally path connected topological group is a topological group and its covering map is homomorphism.

Abstract:We show that finite (i.e. locally finite and decomposition-finite) objects of a connected Grothendieck topos span a Boolean pretopos with an essentially unique Galois point. The automorphism group of this point carries a profinite topology whose classifying topos is equivalent to the given Grothendieck topos if the latter is finitely generated. This leads to an intrinsic definition of the fundamental group of any connected Grothendieck topos.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of a natural group topology on the fundamental group which remembers local properties of spaces forgotten by covering space theory and weak homotopy type. It is known that viewing the fundamental group as the quotient of the loop space often fails to result in a topological group; we use free topological groups to construct a topology which promotes the fundamental group of any space to topological group structure. The resulting invariant, denoted $\pi_{1}^{\tau}$, takes values in the category of topological groups, can distinguish spaces with isomorphic fundamental groups, and agrees with the quotient fundamental group precisely when the quotient topology yields a topological group. Most importantly, this choice of topology allows us to naturally realize free topological groups and pushouts of topological groups as fundamental groups via topological analogues of classical results in algebraic topology.

Abstract:For a path connected, locally path connected and semilocally simply connected space $X$, let $\Pi_1(X)$ denote its topologised fundamental groupoid as established in the first article of this series. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be the category of $\Pi_1(X)$-spaces in which the momentum maps are local homeomorphisms. We show that this category is isomorphic to that of covering spaces of $X$. Using this, we give different characterisations for free or proper actions of the fundamental groupoid in $\mathcal{E}$.

Abstract:It is important to classify covering subgroups of the fundamental group of a topological space using their topological properties in the topologized fundamental group. In this paper, we introduce and study some topologies on the fundamental group and use them to classify coverings, semicoverings, and generalized coverings of a topological space. To do this, we use the concept of subgroup topology on a group and discuss their properties. In particular, we explore which of these topologies make the fundamental group a topological group. Moreover, we provide some examples of topological spaces to compare topologies of fundamental groups.
